[R]: People were asking about Gnome 2.20 on Wednesday.

Still don’t know how eix -e gnome

i installed that a few days ago

oups

is it not in portage? must be in the gnome overlay

gnome 2.18 only became stable a few weeks ago…

[R]: Yeah, not in mainline tree.

what is that?

Dejv, Lotus Symphony sounded a bit like those meaningless fluff business terms

?

stuff like that amazes me… just like people complaining nonstop about the whole xorg 1.4 thing with nvidia… big deal… you wait for them to update the drivers and you dont install the server till then… not like the earth is gonna stop rotating because you dont upgrade your xorg

ami I searched gentoo-wiki for UDF but nothing came up. I’ll try to compile joliet support now. how can i learn more about udf?

unless IBM opens up the Lotus Domino Server I find Lotus Symphony quite meaningless

xwolf-: like what?

xwolf-, those are kernel options

[R]: It’s a cultural phenomenom… Gentoo attracts users that like the latest and greatest… so we get a lot of zero-day questions

How many people here emerge their world regularly?

every day essenital to having a well oiled machine

:P

xwolf- UDF and joliet are both options in your kernel

yeah a lot although i haven’t for a bit cos of expat

eix-sync && emerge -uDNa world && etc-update daily

xwolf-: wikipedia. note that udf is seldom used on CDs, rather DVDs. as for joliet, that should be considered an essential option.

right, i’ve just just found them. should I compile in both of them?

RFC_1149, daily too here

RFC_1149 yes - weekly

I used to run emerge –sync && emerge -e world in a loop to find bugs :-)

ok.

once a bluemoon ;P

thank you

bonsaikitten, very good!

every 15 minutes

that became boring - now I’m trying to build them all

lol

I’ve run revdep-rebuild, and my perl is still broken

hehe

perl-cleaner all

symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8/i686-linux/auto/Compress/Raw/Zlib/Zlib.so: undefined symbol: zlibVersion

emerge ieee80211 is asking that I have a kernel option enabled that doesn’t exist :’( what do I do?

7 BST 2007 : Beginning a clean up of .ph

revdep-rebuild won’t pick up all perl issues

Excluding perl-5.8.8 from cleaning

emerge dev-perl/Compress-Raw-Zlib

it exists. but you didn’t enable it

thanks bonsaikitten

ok, i did emerge –sync and it still wants to install qemu-0.8.0 rather than 0.9.0 which i guess is the stable one

9 BST 2007 : Building list of modules for

feesh, don’t use emerge ieee80211 use the in kernel ieee80211

Locating modules for reinstall 9 BST 2007 : Locating ebuilds linked against

I don’t something similar to what’s in the gentoo-wiki oh ok

maybe ~keyword, or mask

I believe that re-emerging Compress-Raw-Zlib may fix it.

maybe he needs it?

kerframil, Dan thanks!

What Apple partition type is FAT16? Is there an Apple partition type for FAT16?

oh, Dan got there already.

yeah, but qemu-0.9.0 shouldnt be masked if its stable

kerframil, Dan - emerge dev-perl/Compress-Raw-Zlib fixed it - thanks!

what does emerge -av =app-emulation/qemu-0.9.0

Dejv CONFIG_NET_RADIO has been removed for recent kernels, its the in kernel stuff meanwhile and the kernel wireless has undergone a major rewrite

what are you talking about? it isn’t masked.

bonsaikitten, perl-cleaner didn’t get it, but thanks anyway

cheers NeddySeagoon, im gonna reboot, hopefully it’ll work good!

never mind, i shouldve checked package.mask sorry

I know that - but maybe he is using older kernel

feesh good luck

hmm, was worth a try

bonsaikitten, true

Dejv in that case he would not have the reported problem … needs an option that is no longer there …

I am using 2.6.22 with mac80211 patches (I need it the newest possible) But not everybody needs the latest kernel

apple uses HFS or HFS+

Maybe he opened .config with vim - and didn’t find option - because if it is set to ‘n’ - it is not in config file

I’m aware of that. Is there a partition type for FAT16?

he has to go trough make menuconfig to enable it - or to write it himself

afaik apple never supported fat16

robink, what do you mean? vfat?

Does anyone else use - for app in `emerge -upvDN world | awk ‘{print $4}’ | sed s/^/=/g | xargs echo` ; do emerge -uvDN $app ; done

Dejv, its in the .config as a comment unless the parent menu is off

translate it to plain english - please…

They do now. At the extreme least, OSX 10.3 does. Oh yeah, and MacOS 7.5 did too.

Dejv, to emerge the rest of world if one package is broken (or on Fetch Restriction)

Pretty much.

before my time… thankfully

OSX 10.3 was before your time?

I didn’t pay attention to Mac’s until System 9

I think not always… and maybe he offed the parrent menu

oh…

and then I rather skipped over from Mac OS 9 to 10.4

Ah

easier is to just run emerge -uDN world; and after that a loop of emerge –skip-first –resume

well this is not a mac support channel..

Dejv its possible … in which case he may need to use his old kernel to come back and tell me I was wrong

No, but it is a Gentoo support channel and mac-fdisk is a Gentoo package.

Dejv, thanks! I love this channel. I find a better way to do almost everything!

why do you like to do things harder way?

That and I’m banned from Slashnet #macintosh.

RobbieAB, I see :-)

maybe

meant robink

oh, now i get exactly the same error as the 188510 bug

Sorry, you are not allowed to do that.

go ahead… should be the same as linux… as that was a linux fat16 I shoved in

that update script works well

Was this on an Intel mac or a PPC mac?

robink, you get your disk to work on osx, i wasnt reading all this now

intel

Should use a GUID partition table…

my partition type is FDISK_partition_scheme

Although if it’s designed to work with other macs, all bets are off…could be DOS or classic Apple. DOS then?

Thanks Dan - I’d have to read it all first of cours

yep DOS then

The mac I was working on earlier seemed unable to read a DOS partition table. The mac I was working on earlier seemed unable to read a DOS partition table.

using Master Boot Record. not GUID or Apple

its good, i use it from time to time for fun

using MBR is more compatable to Windows/DOS…

Actually, now that I think about it, it’s more likely it was choking on mkfs.vfat’s FAT16 vfat filesystem format.

I have this udev issue… “udevd[83]: init_uevent_netlink_sock: bind failed: No such file or directory” I susspect something is missing in my kernel, or in /etc :{ anyone has an hint?

…because thinking back, I /think/ there was a /dev device for partition 1 on the mac.

Dan - thanks - I’ll need to make sure the regexes aren’t execing ){ :|:&};: or something as sinister

could be… but I doubt it… since that is what this was done on could have been a buggy mkfs.vfat

Hello. Has someone here tried to compile openoffice 2.3.0 on ~amd64 with WANT_MP = “true” ?

holy molly!!!, what if i miss some important USE flag???

hi all

When creating a vfat FAT16 filesystem, to I mark the partition type as FAT16 or Win95 FAT32 as vfat was introduced (to the Windows world) with Windows 95?

seeing as its not fat32…

[R]: Right. Just that I’m pretty sure OSX 10.3 made a FAT16 filesystem and marked it FAT32

right dont really think the partition type means anhting

What’s the deal with a non-masked update to gnome (gnome-base/gnome-2.18.3) requiring a masked package(gnome-base/eel) ?

eel 2.18.3 isn’t masked

both of those packages are ~arch here

[R], odd, emerge is giving me this: !!! All ebuilds that could satisfy “=gnome-base/eel-2.18.3″ have been masked.

how do I tell portage to install mysql-5.1 instead of 5.0?

hrm strange eix is being weird

um. 2.18.3 is ~ on my box.

yeah, they are both ~

i don’t see 5.1 in portage so you’d have to make an ebuild or find it in an overlay

ah right where are overlays located on the system

mysql-community has betas

Hmm.. then i don’t know how gnome 2.18.3 got selected for emerge.. will have to look closer.. thx

its in your package.keywords

[R], no gnome at all in my package.keywords

portage doesnt magically install ~arch things

this emerge xorg-x11 is going to take foreeevvvver

X is kinda big…

yea it is

i’ve been building KDE for over 2 days -_-

it’s system dependant. speedwise

Hello. Has someone here tried to compile openoffice 2.3.0 on ~amd64 with WANT_MP = “true” ?

of course it is 8 P 550 or 500 mhz over here

someone did setup a rssh jail for sftp usage?

nooot too much

I get a connection closed.. directly after login

might want to ask #gentoo-amd64

Fieldy, thank you, I didn’t even notice such a channel existed … :-)

is gentoo faster w/ the dual core or with the 64 bits?

Oh I donno… I’ve ran 32 and 64 and really can’t tell

so dual core it is?

my logfiles gives this http://rafb.net/p/8S6yfI79.html

gentoo is pwn with 64 bit… gentoo is suck w/o 64 bit you have to choose one or the other?

would you recommend 64 or 32 bit on a intel xeon 3ghz on vmware esx?

iamben amd/intell ? no? or did amd put out their multicore 64 bitness?

uhh this is 2007

I’ve been under a rock a minute care to inform me what changed? 8 )

“athlon 64 x2″ cpus are dual core, and have been out a long time

yeah im living in 2003 cpu wise myself.. trying to edumacate myself o_0

rssh_chroot_helper is the mail problem as far as I can tell

AMD is about to start selling quad-core Opterons (K10 arch, 65nm fab)

robink wasn’t intel or amd.. I forget which, suppose to release a new arch on a smaller nm fabrication? like … really soon? ie: before dec

ps I am on an AMD thunderbird and all still rocks

Probably AMD. I don’t imagine Intel will be fabbing x86 CPUs at 45nm anytime soon. …or at least selling them to us unwashed masses.

I’m in dire need of an upgrade, I’m soo screwed.

intel just announced 45 nano in testing fase

I can’t just do any one individual component. I need to redo the entire machine

even 32 nano

yeah i don’t have a machine worthy of upgrading

faq topic

The main topic of #gentoo is _support_ for Gentoo Linux. If your question isn’t Gentoo-related, or if it’s Gentoo-related, but not support-related, ops may ask you to move the conversation to #gentoo-chat or another more appropriate channel.

I need to get onto ddr2, not quite ddr3 yet… but I don’t even have pci-e or sata either

We’d best listen to Fieldy/mzbot

yeah and answer my burning question ;-)

What do the bright and normal greens mean in portage nowadays?

which is better for compiling KDE in gentoo… X2 or C2D

Ah, world atoms?

What bs should I use when zeroing a 13GB drive?

“bs”?

robink, democratics

Cute. Sorry, blocksize w/ dd.

yo

What question should I use in order to get response? ;-)

wrt a chroot jail for rsh sessions?

ah. doesn’t really matter, use 512K if unsure.

I’m using 32M.

that’s pretty big, will make things slow

I was told that bigger was better, i.e. use as much as you have RAM for Oh, ‘k. Drive activity light is lit up solidly, that’s a good sign, right?

is the live cd i686 gui installer known to work?

robink, yes I have a chroot jail for a user to upload web stuff

i read somewhere it has issues

its known to suck… a lot

[R]: wonderful

the gui installer is known to have a lot of serious problems. use the classic handbook guided install for best results

[R]: anyway not to have to spend 8 hours on an install?

it takes the same amount of time if you use the handbook or the installer…

install a binary distro?

yep. if time is an issue, i would suggest a binary distro

well … the compile time i don’t mind … i am talking about the amount of time i have to sit there and mess with config files

the installer does the exact same thing you would do by following the handbook

robink, I do get connection the authentication goes fine too.. but then the rssh_chroot_helper gives problems when doing a stat() …my logfiles gives this http://rafb.net/p/8S6yfI79.html

[R]: oh

I followed the http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_SFTP_Server_(chrooted,_without_shell)

[R]: does it walk you through it better or something? … i just don’t understand why make a gui installer that still requires the handbook method

because peopel are stupid?

[R]: ah … wonderful

what is the recommended FS for gentoo?

[R]: how about the command line install featured on the live cd … does it also suck?

whatever one you want

which works best

ext3 is my personal recommendation

the cli installer is exactly the same as the gui installer… jsut a differnet frontend they all work the same its a filesystem

it’s been a few years since my last gentoo install

not r ocket science it stores your files

is xfs faster than ext3, for example?

with large files yes, anything else, no

xfs is fun when you lose power

i would recommend reiserfs due to that the main developer is in prison to time

yeah. don’t use xfs without a good power backup

there is a very good explanation in the gentoo handbook

I’m not sure what’s wrong. I’ve never set up a user chroot jail.

you would?

[R]: so why was that install released as stable if it sucks?

great with large files and databases jfs: well rounded for most everything reiserfs: if anything happens to your disk, kiss your data goodbye (no good way to recover) ext3: whats the point when there’s better alternatives zfs: i hope i can use this without fuse soon

well, propably not.. in prison he has other things to do

how should i know… i’m not a gentoo dec dev* people do lots of stupid things

i’m still running a 2.2 series kernel

so… i have this UPS that has.. issues. it charges the batteries fine (check THAT with a multimeter) but as soon as the line power is removed, the UPS beeps an error and lights up the “battery fault” light and shuts down. now. the same 4 batteries work FINE in every OTHER ups here. any ideas WTF is up with this thing?

is jfs stable enough to use?

[R]: fair enough … well thank you for entertaining my questions

jfs is great. it’s way stable.

doesn’t JFS come from IBM?

robink, me neither… there seams to be missing something small… I will try dig into the code then

yes it does.

jfs is from ibm

well thats why

might want to ask ##hardware

but i’ve been running reiser for years, never had a problem

yeah same here. filesystem of choice.

neither have I with reiser, but its a dead end imo pun not intended

wait till you have a bad sector. The fsck utilities for reiser are absolutely awful.

whatever

there’s no proper zfs support is there?

nope

Or even without a bad sector, if some how the drive gets the elast bit of corruption.

not until they fix the license

s/elast/least

high-rez: i’ve had fsck fix things just fine and dandy for me

zfs works under FUSE apparently

the zfs license is aprantly incompatible with the gplv2 sun is a pain that way

my madwifi driver isn’t working

man, you’ve been luck that’s all i can say, it’s been total crap for me - i’ve completely migrated away from it and would never recommend reiserfs to anyone.

I have the AirLink101 AWLC4130 but I don’t have a device ath0

reiserfs3 is fine

high-rez: i once lost a 330gb partition that was using reiser… but it had nothign to do with a fault of reiser… my own stupidity

I’ve loaded all the ath_* modules and wlan_* modules and I still have no device

and quite honestly, the only problem with reiserfs is when you have crappy hardware or bad power outages with crappy hardware

are you sure tahts the proper driver?

sounds like the majority of users :p

hi guys, expat is coming up on the emerge world list and ive noticed there are lots of problems with, whats the best way to go about upgrading it safely?

sadly yes… :/

[R]: oh yes

however I’ve also had reiser freak out over some Knoppix use

I had a reiserfs3 issue where whenever I did resierfscheck it would say my data was lost… even on a newly formatted fs it was bad hardware

make sure everything else is updated before you update expat, then follow the directions in the topic

I use reiserfs in production enviroments though… and have never had an issue just crappy hardware causes issue, which is always a problem

hi

[R]: I have the right driver, I’ve loaded *ALL* the modules I’ve ever heard of in conjunction with this card, and I still have no ath0

[R]: ok, so is there a way i could run emerge –update –deep world but miss out expat?

Under heavy disk IO, (with 100+ read/writes at once), reiser has been consistent at corrupting itself for us. The reiserfsck program every time did the full rebuild, and failed cause it couldn’t allocate space (disks were full). Then basically said “pay namesis if you want your data”

well what does dmesg say mask it then unmask it and update it

high-rez: crappy hardware.

could we move the filesystem discussion elsewhere, it’s not going to accomplish anything here (such as #gentoo-chat)

don’t blame reiserfs for your issues high-rez… blame your hardware.

[R]: ok cool, thanks, ill give that a try

The hardware must have uncrappied itself automagically after switching to jfs.

hey guys

oh, how do I know if I’m running smp?

high-rez: eww… such a slow filesystem…

kernel or hardware wise?

cat /proc/cpuinfo

Damm_ jfs isn’t slow at all

Damm_ / high-rez / tdr / others: could we move the filesystem discussion elsewhere, it’s not going to accomplish anything here (such as #gentoo-chat)

acid_ other dlink cards work ok under linux, never used that one

and did you just miss the error that is RIGHT THERE in the log?

k

no support for automatic module loading

[R]: yes, but then I see that it loaded the module

well im just tired of this linksys one. it works fine for a while then to get ip sometimes i have to reboot or reload module just kinda flaky

Ok, i REALLY don’t understand why people insist on using wifi on system that don’t GO anywhere.

[R]: yes, but it loaded the modules anyway

not the point

[R]: ok, and the point is? other than to get my card working…

putting cables trough your house is a hassle

why is automatic module loading not enabled?

[R]: I don’t know, isn’t that a kernel option?

yes it is

[R]: well I recall something about having to disable that to use the driver [R]: I can enable it… but I really fail to see how that changes the fact that it loaded the modules and I still cannot access the card

enable it, then show me the error messages it gives if it still doesnt work

Can anyone help me with a weird error while running emerge -av vmware-workstation (and only that package). Some weird bin errors and an I/O.

Pilot_, pastebin?

standby

is mono a long compile? i notice its like 18mb

if i want to emerge something then have my laptop shut down when its finished, how would i go about doing t

Pilot_, I am pretty clueless, but it might be enough info for someone smarter to help

it?

you have to load rate_sample before whatever the one that wants it tries to load, or enable automagic module loading in the kernel.

anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours

emerge tuxracer; shutdown -h now

it depends

hello all

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-586517.html

I’m compiling auto loading into my kernel now…

ok

cheers, can the ; be used to seperate any commands. and would that still shut down the computer if the emerge failed?

Pilot_, an unusual problem indeed, and certainly one far beyond me. Good luck getting help though - keep us posted.

cheers. Yea it’s weird, I seem to only get it while trying to get vmware-workstation. And furthermore, only with version 6.

I have no module rate_sample

looks like vmware or one of its deps might be corrupt in the protage tree

mono is pretty big yeah. 17 minutes here.

ath_rate_sample, and if you don’t, then you’ve got a problem

Pilot_, thanks for that - I was just about to upgrade to six. Good thing I didn’t, especially since I need the Win2K under fedora linux for my trading software

oh, that module… I have that… I thought you were talking about a module called “rate_sample”

or quite possibly the distfile might be corrupt

Here’s the weirder part. 6 is (more or less) fine. I had it emerged before, but was getting an error so I downgraded to 5.5 Then I got the solution to 6 so tried to go back and got that error. [R]: suggesting I delete the distfile?

i’m just telling you what might be wrong… i’m not suggesting you do anything

Don’t the distfiles have md5sums anymore?

Very very oddd

[R]: because I do an emerge -av vmware-workstation and it locks up and gives the errors while it’s calculating deps

Mirrakor, yes, and sha(128,256)

[R]: CYA eh lol.

err… everything seems to be hanging when I try to extract my portage snapshot

calculating the checksum is what is failinig

Yeah Interesting Try that

hanging?

uhm, okay - deleting distfiles, try to get it in a clean way again

Redownload it from another source

if it doesn’t work this time either, overwrite the md5sum check

I just did a new gentoo install (2007.0) and I just tried to compile the svn of the crystalspace3d library, and I get the following error: http://rafb.net/p/g3epyP10.html (They directed me here, since it seem like a gentoo issue)

portage is a heck of a lot of little files, give it time

its not failing the check… its dying calculating it

Hello fellow Americans, I am Gene Ray, inventor of the Time Cube www.timecube.com. I was once a proud citizen of the greatest nation to ever exist on Earth, then in the seventies I began to think seriously about life and creation, making notes about most every thought (ton or so of notes now), so I could progress without repetitive thinkng - kinda like an engineering notebook.

huh, that’s even more odd

I am here to learn about Gentoo.

not if the file is corrupt

what do you mean with dying? silently just stopping to work and do nothing - or do it “just” fails?

I am building an invention that will use Gentoo to prove my Time Cube in terms of educated stupid professors theory.

how i snoop on a users like custum shell logins

what is your gcc version?

is there any estimate when packages.gentoo.org will be back?

thanks …

is this program linking aginst any precompiled libraries?

what did you install from?

visit packages.gentoo.org, then you know as much as everyone else

maybe if you looked at the error he posted…

Is doc|home here?

[R]: 4.1.1 (and I have 3.3.6 installed)

there is a program called ttysnoop, and otheres similar to it

[R]: No, it’s not linking against anything precompiled

and WHY is your CHOST i486?

it extracts two files and then the process hangs - killing gives a zombie

I installed from the minimal 2007.0 live cd

uh, an I/O error

What is the minimal system that will run Gentoo?

that is quite a strange error

anyone knows if lmms is in portage-tree? (lmms = linux multi media studio (afaik))

I tought there were some poeple here who knew more. believe me. I already looked and searched on several pages

486

i had that issue as well w/ the CHOST, just had to emerge GCC and Perl

that’s what the stage3 had. I was confused too

you used the wrong stage3.

[R]: it extracts two files and then the process hangs - killing gives a zombie, even a simple ls hangs

I would like to run Gentoo on a 486SX 25 MHz processor with no CPU cache. Will this work?

there aren’t

There’s only one on the mirror…

bad disk.

what’s the architecture?

no. you got the x86 stage3, you needed the i686 one.

vmware esx, lol

wow… thats pretty fscked up

486

no. recent glibc versions in gentoo require a newer cpu, i586 i think

ah, heh

not anymore, no.

maybe jfs wasn’t such a good idae?

you could use an old glibc, though

idea*

it would also be utterly painful with gentoo if it worked anyway

indeed

Okay.

there mist be some distros aimed at old hardware - might check www.linux.org/dist

Skunky, oh, interesting. Though, I don’t want to have to re-do this install. Is it safe to leave it like this?

GeneRay, that old of a PC belongs in a museum,

i installed on a 486/66 with 32 meg of ram once. a few years ago. took a week to do bootstrap.sh

pish, I have a _3_86 upstairs $

no.

deli linux GeneRay

how do I force umount t?

http://delili.lens.hl-users.com/ — GeneRay, Deli

as long as your make.cofn says i486 and you dont change it… its fine

it*

you should be able installing it on a i486 system, with the generic x86 packages (even though you might want a distribution that has prebuild packages..)

cd out of the directory and umount anyhting mounted on it… then it’ll unmount fine

[R]: it still says its busy, probably because of some zombie tar processes

reboot!

mmm, free dinner

[R]: it does say i486. Is there any disadvantages give by that?

not really… it doesnt mean anything really

course there is, you just probably won’t notice it :p

gcc might make 486 code who knows

486 is like 15 years old 686 is only like 10

lol

whats next? i886 ?

[R] ttysnoop dont work getting compling errors

erm, x86_64 :p

maybe you could post them to a pastebin… theres an idea

they should really make something new, though

heh, leave it to me to grab x86 rather then 686. ah, well. now, chances are, it’s unrelated to my current compile issue… Anythoughts on that, or rather, ways I can get more information to figure out what’s going on?

pretty lame that the most popular procs of today are still based on 20-year-old technology

yeah, that comes from not reading the handbook properly and if you didnt follow those directions correctly… who knows what else you failed to do properly you know?

kdepim is another long one?

[R]: Eh, I did it from memory, and since everything seems to be working, I’ll assume it was the only mistake I made. :-p …minus this issue.

lol

[R]: ok, I compiled module autoloading into the kernel, and I *still* have no ath0

hello all. I am interested in emerging mapserver-5.0.0 but one of the dependancies is gdal. I’ve installed gdal 1.5 (which is not in portage). Do I have to downgrade to gdal 1.4.2 to use mapserver?

now show me the errors from dmseg

mapserver is in portage… emerging it should intsall all of its deps wow, thats crappy… guess you cant use that program

[R]: I know it is in portage, but it will try to install gdal 1.4.2. I want to keep what I have, gdal 1.5 which I built from source

use package.provided but what you should REALLY do is just get/write an ebuild for 1.5

you REALLY should start over, and do it right. or you’ll always have bizarre little issues.

[R] i have also tryed this one http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Snoop_terminal_session but i can do nothing in the shell

that sucks

howdy, can anyone help me debug issues with my xorg.conf file? I am trying to get 1080p working on my LCD tv I have a modeline in my xorg file, but upon x start, it says it can’t find a valid mode and defaults back to the nvidia auto detected values

I’ll take a look at that. wish I had time to make an ebuild for gdal…I need to demo mapserver 5.0 soon

[R] u know a good snooping programa for tty like kernel mod or etc

i’m pretty sure i told you one

in many cases, you can just rename an ebuild to the new version # and it will work, its worth a try

and it doenst work, so i’m out of ideas

u know eny others ?

Well, it would seem that there’s something really broken if this issue is coming from my not using the i686 stage3.

can you point to a source of info to do this?

its not

Hello fellow Americans, I am Gene Ray, inventor of the Time Cube www.timecube.com. I was once a proud citizen of the greatest nation to ever exist on Earth, then in the seventies I began to think seriously about life and creation, making notes about most every thought (ton or so of notes now), so I could progress without repetitive thinkng - kinda like an engineering notebook.

[R]: I figured. I’m just saying… everything’s been working (X, kde, etc. No compile errors, or anything. So, I doubt that there’s something broken in the way I installed it.)

I am here to learn about Gentoo.

If nobody responds to your question in a channel as busy as #gentoo you should rephrase the question. Maybe the original question doesn’t quite make sense, or maybe it’s too long to simply scan and reply. Whatever the reason is, just reposting the same question will probably get you the same answer (no answer).

Yes mzbot.

well i never said there was nothign wrong with your system… i said using the x86 wasn’t the cause of your problems

thanks for the tip

Can anyone help me with emerge errors? http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-586271.html

[R]: I know. I’m just saying, I highly doubt there is. I mean, how many way can one mess up a stage3 install, and have it boot, and compile?

i really dont know… i never make mistakes

2+2=2!

[R]: I woulda thought the same thing

[R]: I need you to fill out some lottery cupons for me.

dont you mean 5 or 22?

2

sure… thats just lame but i dont see what luck has to do with making mistakes

interesting fact of the day…. if you use a usb mouse under X, with the default xorg configuration if you unplug the mouse and plug it back in X wont pick it up

i buy one lottery ticket a week for 5 dollars, its worth 5 dollars for a chance to win millions, chances are very slim that i win, but if i did win millions that would be so utterly cool!

[R]: well, there’s actually a process by which you can make 2+2=2

if you’re using /dev/input/mice it *should* work…

you need to change /dev/input/mouse0 to /dev/input/mice to ensure it can still find the mouse after you plug it back in. /fact

i’m sure tehre is

yeah [R]

[R]: it’s a well-know math joke

i had a teacher show me 1=0 once

mmm

[R]: good point.

hello, I’m trying to get my Atheros AR5212 working with gentoo… I’ve installed the driver however when I load the modules (I’ve even rebooted) I have no device ath0, and the modules are loaded

hi all

did i miss where you pasted what dmesg says?

is there any way to make a binary comparison of contents of folders?

and what do you wnat it to tell you? that the binary files differ? diff can do it

Ice_Wewe you looked at iwconfig -a ?

[R]: no… I’ve compiled autoloading modules and the modules have loaded and iwconfig -a just returns “-a No such Device”

and that answers my question how…

[R], i cloned my hdd and want to check if my home/user folder and its contents (all files and folders) are identical…

mmm, 34 packs in revdep-rebuild, including GCC FUN!

diff will work

Is there a way to tell emerge –depclean to not consider my cross-gcc for removal?

[R]: it loaded the modules… I’ve compiled auto loading module support and I still get the same error… it still loads the modules, and I still don’t have ath0

[R], will it doa binary comparison by default? i can’t seem to find a switch for that in man…

the error about missing autoload?

[R]: Yes

if its a text file it’ll do text, if its binary it’ll do binary

[R]: I compiled support, I rebooted, I don’t know what else to do

and you’re still sure its the correct driver?

[R]: *yes*

um.

I followed the guide to setting it up… except for there is no ath0

what do you get in ifconfig -a ? do you get a wifi or ath there?

no

wlan ?

nope

Can anyone help me with emerge errors? http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-586271.html

what are you telling modprobe, and what’s dmesg say about it?

Hi, Why my subdomain not work ? gentoo etc # nopaste /etc/bind/domain/diabel.ztpnet.pl http://rafb.net/p/0ojRzt18.html gentoo etc # nopaste /etc/apache2/vhosts.d/00_default_vhost.conf http://rafb.net/p/Sp8P1z46.html

I’m telling modprobe to load ath_pci ath_hal ath_rate_sample wlan and wlan_scan_sta

and what things actually get loaded?

IRQ 11

all of those modules are being loaded

While doing the Gentoo manual install, am I able to install GRUB first?

pastebin output of lsmod and what dmesg says you can’t install grub until you’ve got a system that can compile it.

So I can’t use the grub from the LiveCD?

Maxdamantus the livecd doesn’t use grub

tdr, it has grub on it though. /bin/grub (GRUB shell)

follow the handbook. do not skip steps.

I want to get the boot working first. I’m fucked off with this HD.

Maxdamantus language

Mk.

there are a *lot* of ACPI debug messages in my dmesg, so I’m just posting the relavent part… http://pastebin.com/m6a314521

I want to get GRUB working before spending an hour installing Gentoo again. Last install, everything worked, except for the boot.

why are you getting a lot of acpi debug messages? is acpi having trouble assigning irq’s and triggering them?

So I was using a floppy with GRUB on it for a few months. But now all my FD drives are broken.

no, this is a Compaq Presario 2190, which does not comply with ACPI… so…

well, that’s just silly. no. you can’t install grub first. you can’t install lilo first either. follow the handbook, do not skip steps. so WHY do you have acpi enabled?

Skunky, but then I’ll just end up in the same place as last time.

Hello i would like that some users.. can have acces to root, just a few.. using the group wheel … but i dont know is not working the autentification.. it looks like it had failed the passwd…

A perfectly working system, other than the fact that it won’t boot from the HD.

thats when you come in here and tell us the errors, and we fix it

the only reason a system won’t boot from it’s hard drive is because you’ve not spent the time to figure out WTF makes it unhappy.

http://pastebin.com/m7374e1e5 … because I can use it to throttle the cpu when I’m on battery power

[R], but there was no error with Gentoo. It’s the boot.

su uses the root password, sudo uses the users’ password

anyone know of a well supported tv card that works with gentoo?

‘the boot’ huh/

Skunky, I’ve spent hours trying to get it working. Tried reinstalling grub and lilo about 10 times each.

obviously you were doing SOMETHING wrong.

It will boot if I put this HD into another computer..

[R], i didnt get it..

And the computer will boot other HDs..

Can anyone help me with emerge errors? http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-586271.html

Skunky, somehow, I doubt I was doing something wrong.

maybe that physical drive is damaged.

3 /bin/su.. With the ’s’

chmod +s

um. there’s only acpi stuff there. (:

Skunky, quite possibly.

that is not the total dmesg output… the actual dmesg output is over 80KB in size

So it’s not possible to install grub to an empty partition without making a chroot environment?

I’m not going to post the whole thing… since a majority of it is acpi errors like the snippet I just showed you

Hey, kde-base/kdesktop-3.5.6-r1 (is blocking kde-base/kdebase-kioslaves-3.5.7-r1)

I can’t run the grub shell and make it install to a seperate partition?

sure… but in the gentoo world… where are you going to get grub… from the magical faries?

i wanna see the stuff that spits out when the ath_pci and ath_hal modules get loaded

.. in an emerge –world –deep update, which to unmerge?

manually update kdesktop first

[R], I have a Gentoo LiveCD (2006), and that has the grub shell on it.

http://pastebin.com/m6a314521

no…

[R]: Would that be through the emerge command, or should I hunt for a manual update howto?

I can make grub floppies from it.. Just not sure how to install it on it’s own partition.

emerge

[R], how is it possible that people have a seperate boot partition then?

since when does the livecd have grub

[R]: rgr, thanks

huh?

now, i told you before, you have to load the rate sample module BEFORE the pci module

[R]: “emerge kde-base/kdesktop -av

i dont see what installing grub before a system is gonna do you… its not gonna have antyhing to bood

[R]: i think the livecd uses grub to boot

Yes. It’s going to save me an hour of setting up the system, before zeroing it out again.

[R]: err, clipboard is sending messages unfinished, but yea, that package fails ’cause of blocks.

no… it doesnt again, that makes no sense ok… remove kdesktop and then reinstall it

[R]: rgr, thanks

If you built a building, and you find out you forgot to build the first floor, you’re fucked. Stuffed*

Maxdamantus, language

oh… so you cant read and you skip things… that explains it

[R]: please stop grating on him

[R], I don’t skip things. The boot just didn’t work last time.

whatever, i’m done with you

awesome! I get a ath0!!!

if the boot does not work, you configured it wrong. If that is the case, then you boot up the cd again, mount the disks, chroot and fix it

well, THAT’S good. NOW the fun begins. (:

nattdyr, again, I’ve done that many times.

how do i generate a new .Xauthority file? :-/ my .X server is not starting up, erroring out with: xauth: error in locking authority file ~/.Xauthority

I know that it is installed to the mbr, because if I put the HD into another computer, I’ll get the grub menu. And if I take a HD from another computer, and put it into the one I’m having problems with, it’ll show me the grub menu too.

is there one there already? if yes, delete it, X should create a new one on it’s own. if it’s not there, verify that you can actually write to your home dir, as in, you’re not on a full partition or over quota or something

But with this specific HD in this specific machine, it always gives “No [active partitions] found on HD” when the BIOS attempts to boot from the HD.

so, if ’sdl’ is an option for a game (it’s a USE flag), what benefit do I get by enabling it?

What file is used to store world items in emerge? It’s /var something right?

it seems like it might have something to do with PREEMT

client 1 rejected from local host(uid 1000) No Protocol Specified, and it keeps flooding the screen until i either CtrlC it Ctrl Alt Backspace the actual X client

maybe i should recompile my kernel without preemption support?

did you just upgrade X or something?

I ran emerge -vauDN world about a week ago, ever since then startx stopped working so ive been relying on xdm to get a WM loaded, but now even that isn’t working properly :-/

Anyone get sqlzma to work?

so i just merged the ati-drivers package.. and i used the aticonfig –initial.. now when i run startx, my screen just blacks out.. and i must restart

I never had much luck with ATI

dave32, i seriously lol’d..

Can anyone help me with emerge errors? http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-586271.html

So, anyone know?

check the log get your manual to your monitor so you can set the xorg.conf correctly

dave32, don’t have a manual.. laptop.

Xorg -configure will try to probe safely I am sure you can get the info you want online lol Gross this zit on my back wont stop oozing…. I thought I’d share So no one has tried squashfs with lzma…

what is the operational difference for BZFlag if I emerge with the ’sdl’ USE flag on or off?

let’s remain on gentoo topics, ok?

have no clue

on

and squashfs aint linux or gentoo? All I am trying to do is make a custon livecd with fluxbox

Ice_Wewe, emerge with it on you say?

i mean the zit talk and the food talk

you’re the boss…

dave32, so Xorg -configure gave me “Fatal server error: Caught signal 11. Server aborting. Aborted”

check the /var/log/xorg.*.log I can’t begin to guess what the problem is… That is what a log is for

I thought signal 11 might have said something :p

you might want to delete the logs and redo to get a up to date one no not at all….

anyone know a good app to use, to stream music over a network?

amy_, shoutcast?

mpd is nice

client or server? If it’s client, mpd!

server

ok…

amy_, icecast is an opensource shoutcast amy_, might work good for ya

i’ve just set up gentoo on a new machine, and everything is running the way i want … except it doesn’t seem to recognize my IDE DVD drive. my kernel has IDE support built in, as well as the BLK_DEV_IDECD option enabled (built-in, not a module) … is there some other kernel option i might have missed that would impact this?

c0nv1ct, gui or ncurses/daemon?

are there any specific RAM-related BIOS settings I should try to get gentoo (or any other linux) to work properly?

amy_, daemon i’d assume amy_, since servers don’t usually have GUI

hmm, true. good point, how do you set/load stuff to it then?

what are your problems?

amy_, dunno, but www.icecast.org probably has some docs you can read

with my current settings I cannot emerge gcc

c0nv1ct, i’ll check it out, thanks

“internal compiler error: Segmentation fault”

how much ram do you have? free -m will tell you

2gb

whooho… a segfault in gcc… Unfortunately it can mean everything and nothing at the same time…

usually my computer freezes at the exact same spot when emerging gcc; that is with both 4.2.0 and 4.1.2. if I change my current RAM settings to ‘auto’ for every setting, I get the error above when trying to emerge gcc, and experience massive corruption issues in windows.

anyone have any suggestions on what works best for an ati x300 video card

my current settings seem to work fine for windows (comp is two years old), but big linux host compiles fail

what do you mean, “what works best”? driver support? X config?

I’ve used the standard vga driver and fglrx driver and both seem to cause my box to freeze when starting X :/

How much stuff is there on your system? The brute force method would be to back up personal data and go for another install.

I’ve lost console access, but still have shell/vnc access

Can anyone help me with emerge errors? http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-586271.html

alternatively you could try to untar a stagetarball and recompile gcc.

what do the X logs say? they should be in /var/log/Xorg*

someone have an idea to communicate with a hcs12 family microcontroler througt the serial port using EIA-232 protocol

I’m rather convinced that my ram settings are at fault; reinstalling would solve nothing

the kernel don’t even link the device to the ttyS* when connected is there a kernel module that i should load or

have you tweaked any of your RAM timings in BIOS?

well… yes. There _is_ the _possibility_ that you’ve got some defective RAMs in your machine. I remember having read something awfully long about such stuff… let’s see if I can find it.

Xorg.0.log reports no critcal erros I’m guessing then that I haven’t got the refresh settings right for my wife’s dell monitor :/

have you tried googling for the monitor model? in the past few years, i’ve found that it’s a -lot- easier to find the refresh rates on the web than it used to be

Ah, there, found it. It’s lengthy, but may give you some hints: http://www.bitwizard.nl/sig11/

not to brush you off with a “STFW” , but it might be helpful

So, something about my screen? merged ati-drivers, and did aticonfig. when i do startx, my screen goes blank.. this is the log: http://rafb.net/p/6QwSy417.html

I have and came up with the values HS 30-50 / VR 50-160 but I have also tried 50-85 and both have failed. I also tried commenting out both lines to allow the monitor to set the rates and I got the same result

good luck with the reading. The guide is somewhat comprehensive though not easily comprehended… ;-)

Hello, anyone have issues with NUM, CAPS, and SCROLL locks? They work, but the indicator LEDs don’t turn on. I thought it might be a hardware issue, so I tried booting windows, and the indicators work as they should. I think the problem began when I installed x11-base/xorg-server-1.4-r1. Any ideas?

unfortunately, I have never debugged hardware RAM or HDD faults, so I’m not of much use beyond that what the article I pointed you to already says.

Can anyone help me with emerge errors? http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-586271.html

hi all–perhaps I’ll get a ‘check in #other channel’ response, but I imagine I’m more likely to get a useful answer here and nobody else has given me a decent response… my problem is that I want to boot several OSes, gentoo included, alongside vista

etale, vista first, then gentoo

the solution is simple quit vista … lol

I have vista that came with the laptop, but won’t let me shrink the OSes partion to less than 66gb, despite using only 15gb

you might want to try running memtest on the box for a few hours that would be an extremely easy way to check and see if the RAM is faulty

gn00b, I know that, MBR problem but I need vista for some software, so I want a barebones install.. im hoping someone else in here has dual booted, and I’m guessing they woul dhave done the same

are you ‘consoleman’ ?

no.

vmware could be cool… uhm, what is your question? the first post, the last post, something in between?

have you tried backing up your X config and then running xconfig to try to re-build it?

thank u guys…

well, Im getting some odd errors trying to emerge vmware-workstation (version 6), and it seems, only that package/version. Check the first post in the link: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-586517.html

yes, I even tried startx w/ no config and let it use the safe-defaults, it puked then too

you said it was using fglrx?

yes, but I have used the vga and ati drivers as well

have you tried the middle-of-the-road “ati” or “radeon” drivers? oh. damn there goes that idea

anyone have any pro/cons thoughts on cedega vs wine for running Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45?

to my surprise. xorg and kde “just worked” on my macbook. however what I emerged was kde-base/kdebase that left with my apparently onlt the most basic packages. is kdemeta the way to go next time?

any ideas?

yeah, kde-meta is the whole nine years yards you might want to do that overnight … on a worknight … and have plans for when you get home from work the next day depending on how fast your machine is

ah. it’s pretty fast

is kde-meta the latest Beta?

I just emerged KDE-meta on a Pen-M 1.6Ghz 1gig ram and it took the better part of a day to do. Mind you, this was after only intalling Gentoo and X, so I was about 370 ish packages. No

nvm, its just ALL kde packages

it’s 3.5.7

god that has to be bloated

kate, kwrite, kedit… yes… it is lol

even dell doesn’t list the v+h refresh rates :/

i use xfce4 or gnome-light

I just found the monitor on there site

or even go fluxbox if I want something even lighter

xfce4 is wonderful it does what I want with half the memory use of KDE

i have an athlon64 x2 5600+, 4GB RAM, 640MB 8800GTS

that’s pretty lousy

i don’t mind running gnome-light at that point

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/e773c/En/specs.htm — look at the table

sorry, afk for a few no ideas do other things emerge?

I tweaked my ram timings in the sense that I use settings that apparently work well enough in practice to give me reasonable stability for over two years of near-24/7 use.

it seems like emerge is broken

other things do, just not that one. I run emerge -av vmware-workstation (with my package.use and .keywords for version 6) and it calculates deps, and while doing that, locks up and gives the errors. If I emerge something else, or even specify verion 5.5, then it’s fine.

i’m afraid i’m out of ideas unless you’ve tried another monitor it could be that the monitor has nothing to do with it and it’s a red herring

not all that easy, though. Have you been compiling large stuff over that two years? gcc is a special bitch about memory handling…

it locks up the machine?

I have not been using linux but windows, thus not compiled anything worth mentioning.

for about a minute. Because the hard drive is all tied up, and then it gives the errors and the hard drive idles again.

on the face of it, i have no clue

If I have an intel core 2 duo am I Linux IA32, Linux IA64 or Linux AMD64/EM64T ?

if you want to use 64bits, it’s amd64/em64t, else it’s ia32

ok thanks.

yeah, as I said, gcc’s massive pointer arithmetics is really scary and will react very sensitive to any and all problems that might occur. So I understand you’ve got somewhat experimental RAM settings in BIOS? Try turning that to normal and recompile

hi… I don’t want to start a war, but from everyone’s experience, is AIGLX or GLX better? I want to get as much of my nvidia card running Compiz as possible.

just use nvidia’s built in stuff. No need for GLX or AIGLX

thanks!

as I said, with “normal” ram settings, everything explodes. letting the chips/my bios decide what ram timings to use is a fatal mistake (blame nvidia and whatnot)

hm… that shouldn’t really happen. default BIOS should really be sane…

it’s not supposed to work with default settings, believe me

You could try unmounting one of the two sticks (I suppose they’re two) and see whether that problem persists with just one GIG. I believ you, but that’s what really scares me off. It shouldn’t be like this.

I debated that, yes. I haven’t done it yet. I could only install windows when using one stick of ram (apparently also a ‘known issue’)

hm. Well try it :-) If one of them is faulty, you’ve got a 50/50 Chance of plugging the right one. If your machine still fails, try putting in the other one. There’s also a chance that both are screwed. Then so are you… :-( … not really helpful, I know.

mh, I just wonder if installing windows isn’t an operation comparable to a huge compile, in the sense of “well, if that requires you to go into extra-careful mode, then maybe the same applies there”

I am not sure what exactly happens during Windows installs. Though it surely doesn’t even come close to the arcane stuff gcc is doing during large compiles that really stress the machine it may still come close enough to expose that error in your hardware.

yeah. well, I figure “If a windows install already requires some special care, a gcc compile surely does!”

that’s exactly true ;-)

I have found a nice little usb wifi gizmo (a Belkin F5D7050), is there soiome kind of master list of usb devices that I could browse thru, so i could determine the device I need to hunt down? If only my apropos (man system feature) were working, but I had a fs emergency, and I’m only about 85% recovered, my apropos is a casualy right now any hints as to where the db is that apropos lives on would be appreciated, then i might be able to answer my own usb question

Hey, I’m having a strange problem with compiz, I followed the howto on wikigentoo to the letter, but when I ran compiz-start, it successfully loaded compiz but it failed to load any window decorator, my windows had no borders and I could not move them around at all … any help?

open compiz settings and enable Decoration plugin

deface; nothing

[FYIOLVED] My problems concerning http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-4267040.html were due to (possibly) a corrupted distfile

hi my /var went full i removed files but still it is 100% full according to df, is there anything i can do except reboot?

deface; whenever I open compiz settings it is complaining about dbus not being active over and over, is that the problem?

Is your /var a seperate partition? Perhaps umount and remount?

deface; hello? can anyone else help me?

ati-drivers-8.39.4 unmasked… now X is gone back to 8.35.5 and re-emerging X

is there something that needs to be enabled in the kernel for dbus?

I dont think so, why?

try: sudo /etc/init.d/dbus start

because when I start compiz…. my window borders disappear and I cannot manipulate them Mantaar; that did it

kinda like Mantaar suggested. As root try: /etc/init.d/dbus status (if stopped, then do as Mantaar suggested and start it)

huh… why doesn’t the HOWTO add that extremely important step?

lol! How do I made Dolphin my default file viewer over konqueror in KDE-meta?

the /etc/init.d/* status commands will work without super user access.

sweet

didnt know that, thanks (-:

can you do window transparency with compiz?

glad it worked. Though I personally don’t like Compiz ^^

well I like beryl… but I guess it is no longer supported?

no, compiz-fusion is the way to go.

compiz-fusion doesn’t even exist in my portage tree Mantaar it doesn’t even exist in my portage tree ) I just synced too

to have dbus come up on system start type: sudo rc-update dbus add default and to have compiz-fusion in your portage tree, follow the instructions at wiki.gentoo-xeffects.org You will be instructed to make an overlay. Beware and do not use the svn builds though. Jut keep your /etc/portage/package.keywords clean and use compiz-fusion-5.2. 5.2 is way too much eyecandy already and the nightly builds are _unstable_ (like, not compiling and randomly crashing)

ok brb

take your time. Or just stick to what portage provides.

you need to tell us a few details first: do you use wpa_supplicant? What are the contents of /etc/conf.d/net? How do you connect at home? good luck!

are you sure you have ssid, wep, and mode correct? Have you tried ifconfig eth1 down && ifconfig eth1 up ? Does your iwconfig eth1 report a Tx power level?

lemme check im at work right now so i dont have sshd set up Tx = 20 dBm im connected to the right essid no wep key here on this router mode = managed cant connect at school either it connects at home automatically

does anyone know if gentoo works with the nvidia 8800 GTS?

no but I have a nvidia 8600 GTS GPU and it works fine

it’s not Gentoo, but the nvidia-drivers package that has to be working with it. You’ll have to check the supported cards sections on nvidia’s docs.

i tried ubutnu on my machine and that didn’t work so i am slightly worried of others not working comes up with white screen of death

I’d have to say Im kinda stumped. Try emerging wlassistant and seeing if that will work for you. (That is, assuming that if your laptop were in Windows it could connect to the AP). Did you check router settings? MAC filtering, is a DHCP server running? Are you in range of the wireless network? (try iwlist eth1 scan)

would i always have to add a default router? my default at home is 192.168.2.1 here = 1.1 will i always have to change the default router?
