ok sry^^
ok, then, I download kdebluetooth for feisty, no?
don’t use that no
nono
!tell RLa about unrar !tell RLa about unrar-free
arghhh….
abrotman, no, why?
i meant … for mpx there are packages for feisty x.x
because you’re not using ubuntu
use nick highlighting next time
for me yeh i’m sry
bluesceada, sorry
mixing versions of debian is bad enough .. mixing distros .. recipe for death
abrotman, because i use debian
abrotman, i look for alternatives
urks 229mb package of mpx all in one…
I have a box which gets an extreme amount of connections per second, and “netstat -anp | grep TIME_WAIT | wc -l” returns a whopping 75000 connections. Does a TCP connection always end in TIME_WAIT? If so, Can I reduce the time it waits for extra data on the socket?
freaky packagers
huh ?
don’t even think about installing that shit.
i do why not?
different conventions. things can die. as abrotman said.
hardware die?
bahh.
abrotman, what you suggest?
otherwise … i had gentoo running for a long time
so i’m used to things breaking lol
this is different
why?
read the docs? make it work?
i mean like.. ?
IT WILL BREAK
break what?
oh fuck it .. do whatever you want
ok thanks
see you after the reinstall
ah wait you mean it will overwrite parts from other packages without checking ?
abrotman
abrotman, yes, and i search a lot of info on the web, but i don’t find anything about this
bluesceada, it might do anything.
or does apt check such things
maybe ask #kde or #debian-kde
abrotman, only, that for kde4, kbluepin use dbus
in aptitude, how do you redisplay the screen (e.g. ^L)
abrotman, it’s problem of kde? or debian? i think debian, because it’s only in debian abrotman, in addition, they said that it’s problem of debian
so ask #debian-kde
abrotman, thank you
So Abrotman
hi
I did a net install of Debian without a GUI so I could play around for a bit. Just downloaded kde-core and the command “startx” doesn’t run a gui, any help?
to create a TUN interface, what do I need in the kernel? what option?
aptitude install xorg
thanks, stew, why aptitude and not apt-get?
/msg dpkg why aptitude
hi, please just awnser who really knows, what arch of debian i have to install on a instell emt64 processor ?
i know
a 64 bit one?
i386 or amd64
im having segfaults, with both
Depending on what you want.
try memtest86+

unless it’s a server or has 2GB RAM I wouldn’t run amd64 debian
Depends what you want
CONFIG_TUN it’s in debian.
stew, i have 4 servers, with exactly the same hardware, all they have segfaults
sure, but there isn’t really much incentive for 64bit right now. sooner or later it will come, right now: not worth the hassle
Bad batch of RAM at the fab? Buggy install media? It depends what you want
doing what? run memtest on them. are they overheating?
stew, ok, tks
Hi. I’m new to Deb. Is this support?
are they running any exotic hardware? (and the possibly undertested drivers that drive it)
yes
Great
Hello, any ideas on the best way to install an X server with no graphic card?
A combination of support, insults, banter and randomness really.
stew, sure, the problem is the hardware, forget about,.
install a vncserver, i guess? why would you want an xserver on a machine without a video card?
xdmcp?
Ok, I should fit right in then.
eh?
Gah, stew I meant XDMCP?
no, thanks
run the “dummy” X driver. that will work
stew, i dont really beliave the problem is the hardware, ill lookaround, tks for help
which is why i’m asking about hardware drivers
can I select the dummy driver during a dpkg-reconfigure of the xorg file?
Seriously, Debian i386 and amd64 should both run fine on an em64t system. The minimal information you’ve given us points at some kind of hardware or overheating issue with your machines.
afaik not
I’ve installed debian-40r1-i386-CD-1.iso and it won’t see any wireless card. pcmcia atheros and ralink or usb zydas. all light up but nothing in iwconfig
what chip do you actually have?
can I do a fresh ssh install as a desktop to do it for me then?
Are they recognised by “ifconfig -a”?
can someone tell me why people always say to do ’su -’ instead of just ’su’
PerfDave, i saw a log of posts in alot of forums about people, having problems to install emt64 systems…
man su
no. you install X, edit xorg.conf. at least that’s how I did it
Well, I’m not sure about their emt64 systems, but an em64t one should be fine
thanks
ifconfig - a only shows irda and lo
of course they have. lots of shitty proprietary software isn’t really available. flash, java plugin for example
PerfDave, funny guy
as long as you stick to debian main, you are fine however
Perhaps if you gave more information about when and how you see these segfaults it would be useful? OK, so whatever NIC you have isn’t (yet) recognised by the kernel. That’s the first step
PerfDave, you lazy person
thanks anyway
can you answer the question please?
lspci and lsusb show the hardware
and what do they say?
That has nothing to do with them being recognised by the kernel. I’m not the lazy person who’s asking on IRC before reading the fucking manpage.
PerfDave, … im sure you cant help me, forget about
I like it when people ask for help and then ignore it
I’m sure nobody can help you while you’re being seemingly deliberately vague about whatever problem it is you’re having. Please stop wasting people’s time. !tell BarryAllen about smart questions
PerfDave, you really want mean that you can “observe” a problem thats depend on the time or with wich process the system hangs with a segfault? you must be joking.

PerfDave, I’m not on linux. otherwise I would. and calm down.
go away. you’ve proven enough that you don’t want help now
how do I go about installing clisp with berkeley-db support?
madwifi and/or ndiswrapper are your only choices. nothing else
do I have to compile clisp for myself?
apt-get the source and build the package with the options you want probably
Oh. I was looking for ath_pci. I’ll get madwifi. Thank you. As connects OK on pcmcia network card,
huh?
Cable connect is OK but no wifi. Old laptop!!
so you know your pcmcia stuff is in order, which is good !tell stuartt about madwifi install

hey, i’m using lenny and trying to run glquake or squake or quake.x11 binaries from ftp.idsoftware.com undur idstuff/unsup/unix. For some reason it is not recognized as a binary. kate recongnizes it as a binary, but it wants to open with wine and if i try on command line it says no such command or no such file or directory
Thanks wols . See you next time I get it wrong.!
why wouldn’t it recognize a 386 binary as an executable? I would compile it from source but i cant find the source code on thier site
ehm maybe because it’s a widnows binary? win32 … and not elf or a.out
file file
!seen phated
‘So… yeah, I’m self-kicking now because I’m offtopic.’.
i thought about that, but its undur unix on thier ftp and its packaged with the linux binary .txt
one mom
clisp-dev isn’t the source? there is no clisp source package?
does anyone know where i can find the fedora linux glquake source? also, the same thing happens with the bianry labeled quake.x11, which i doubt is a win32 bin
how do you open it which package
ah! apt-get source packagename, sorry
i’ve tried through kde, and then the commandline via mv $dir, then ./glquake, also tried putting it in /usr/local/bin
did you read the message on http://mfcn.ilo.de/glxquake/#download “I no longer have the source-code on this site .. Instead the tarball contains (in addition to the binary) a patch (for the original quake sourcecode)..” etc?
Salut à tous hi all
have you set the file to be executable when trying to run it?
yeah i used chmod +x ./glquake
file glquake. what does it say?
i’m at school right now waiting for the bus, sorry, I’ll sign back on from home and get the info thanks, i’ll also check out the patch for the original source
“If you want to compile it yourself, download the quake 1 sourcecode. Extract it and apply my patch to the WinQuake directory of the archive: patch -p0 /path/to/mfcns_glquake.patch. Change to the WinQuake directory and type make to compile it.”
if it’S ELF, then run “ldd glquake” and make sure all libs it wants are available
hello I’ve just installed etch (with all the updates) on my thinkpad T40, and when I added the ‘cpu freq. scalling monitor’ to the panel, it gave me an error message saying that cpu freq. scalling was not supported Though in windows, I know it is supported, and works I have been reading throuhg some documentation, but nothing I’ve found seems to be working the processor is an Intel Pentium M at 1.7GHz, and it should step down to 600Mhz
heyas..

todays sid update killed my X (nvidia config, stock 2.6.22 kernel). installing a precompiled nvidia mod odes not work. Ideas on fixing?
(as root), you may want to add that to /etc/modules so that it gets loaded automatically at boot
yeah, I added it, lemme test that panel thing again
hi friends, i have a debian distri with kernel 2.6.16-2 but my sourcelist comes per default with sarge repositories and it’s a problem for me bacuase if i want to install some software or its packages are out of date or doesn’t exist. my question is:
hmmmm my system is not broken at all after installing the mpx package (which just installs in /opt/mpx
Is there any way to back up a machine into installable boot disks?
!info bootcd etch
can i change sarge for etch in my sourcelist without problems or this change can be bad?
(run your system from cd without need for disks), section utils, is extra. Version: 3.00 (etch), Packaged size: 55 kB, Installed size: 228 kB
!tell iguanna about sarge-etch
well, it loaded without error I guess the best way to test it is to take off the AC power and let it run on battery see if it steps nope is there anything else I have to do?
remove and try adding the applet again
I did

Hi
hey .. I’m trying to intsall postfix (apt-get install postfix) and it wants to instally something like 40 packages — is that normaly?

what do you mean?
I’m trying to burn a data dvd, after burn , the file name not appear as it is, the file name include a log chinese names, and it’s replacing the names with _____ and removing the extention ! , how can I burn that data with the all file names
Mail has loads of depends..
how _exactly_ are you burning it?
install mailx first perhaps
alright.. i’ll try it is there some reason why apt-get installs more than aptitude?
___ i try with nero linux and k3b, dero did not accept to burn , But k3b burn it , but file name not appear as I told you
you use unicode ( utf ) on debian?
I don’t know, But the file name appear usually
ugh, why does it want to install emacs
install mailx first
see ‘man genisoimage’, –output-codepage etc
if you don’t have an MUA installed .. it grabs one .. and it goes for emacs
i dont know a thing about chinese charsets, but that direction you need to look
lsub as a non-root user gives no info - as root it works? Does anyone have any ideas? s/lsub/lsusb
k3b too uses genisoimage to generate the dvd image before burning it
k brb rebooting
but that wants to install exim, and I don’t want that
aptitude install mailx postfix
wicked. now it’s just intsally a bunch of libraries thanks!
someone should be shot dead over that
hey guys. my university is using 802.1x authentication. should i be using xsupplicant to do this?
lsusb as non-root user gives no info - as root it works? Does anyone have any ideas? I am using testing, lenny, 2.6.18-4-686.
your kernel is out of date
should I do an upgrade to a 2.6.2* ?
what is the mailx package?
apt-cache show mailx
it likely won’t solve the problem .. install linux-image-2.6-686
I know, its odd, I was playing a little bit with udev for support of my PDA - a blackberry I think I must have done something stupid
cool, thanks man
hey guys. my university is using 802.1x authentication. should i be using xsupplicant to do this?
You can or wpa supplicant or xsupplicant doesn’t matter
hey i want to execute an application on a remote host and have it ouput to the remote host..and i dont want to set up vncserver on that box
ssh?
cant i execute an x11 app to the 0 session ya but i want it to run so the user can see the output yigal like say user A is loged into and user the :0 Xsession how do i fire that app off so that it displays on the :0 xsession
Using Postfix. A user gets big attachements and the connection pipe isn’t that big, so it takes a long time to download email. Could I get a 2mb limit on users mailbox or just reject all attachments over X size for user?
one way to do that is to have a mail server outside, and run also spamassassin on it
I have compiled the linux-2.6.22.6 kernel. Everything seems to have gone well. But the initrd file is not being created. Does anybody know the solution?
why do you need/want an initrd?
did you use make=kpkg
raid, encrypted root fs or such? no initrd necessary usually. and yes, definitely use make-kpkg
geo-rge: no. I followed the standard procedure for kernel compilation
it doesn’t make one by itself use make-kpkg, and feed it –initrd
geo-rge: ok
the resulting package will create an initrd maybe you don’t -need- an initrd… but that’s how to get one or, one way
more importantly it’s the debian way
the basic deal is, that debian package you build out of the kernel can then be installed on different machines, and it will try to figure out what needs to be in the initrd for THAT machine to mount / you already have the kernel source and it’s already configured… just run the make-kpkg –initrd kernel_image inside the source dir then after it’s done the package will be in .. (if successful)
Since blackdown is no more… where can I get j2sk for amd64?
geo-rge: Thanks a lot for your suggestions
You want the plugin right ?
(and if you don’t have make-kpkg…. apt-get install kernel-package
geo-rge: what?
otherwise just use sun-java5-bin (or 5-bin)
whats a mailserver outside have to do with anything?
Yup… And I already tried sun-java5-plugin… Never did a thing
blackdown gone? what happenend to karl?
It is scheduled to be added to java7 anyway
Hi. I have a running etch server, which I control with ssh and vnc4server. Now I want to remove the grafic card but now the x-server fails to start. Any hints?
usually debian repos have it. non-free or contrib there is no browser plugin tho
you can’t run an X server without a graphics card… use ssh X forwarding instead
use a videodriver that doesn’t need a card (”dummy”)
well… not anymore… since blackdown is gone…
not true
okay, i’ll try
that’s just silly
where did I say ANYTHING about blackdown? !tell zamuro about java
what would be the point of running an x server without a card
I did… Actually, that was the question I made in the first place.
and I don’t care what you said. I told you where you can get it. your choice if you don’t want to follow the advice but if you don’t, why did you even bother us asking?
cuz i ran out of ideas, maybe?
hi, does anyone know if it’s possible to get sox with mp3 support in debian?
geo-rge: running WINE kinda needs X
Aaah, thank you for the tip, works fine. Changed driver “nv” to “dummy”
and I wanted to run something that requires wine
what would be the point of running wine without a display
so you can run a program there
oh ok
Yes, I can run X without grafic card
um i think wine can actually run without X…
vnc
not really sure though
so you’re running a win32 program that is a commandline thing?
no.I run a win32 program that uses DX5 actually
never heard of dx5

yes

quite old. the expansion uses DX7 or comes with it at least
ok, this is a video game?
2000-2001 it’s D2
diablo2? i play that too
heh
ahh I have that somewhere
what doesn’t work?
woult that be a multiplayer server?
geo-rge: no, alcient
heh I’m wondering that too
*a client it does work fine, for what I use it
ok good
it took some fidgeting on a headless server without mouse or keyboard of course
obviously, unixwheel wasn’t a member of the wheel group…
in D2, people make chars for only holding found items. “mule”
Since webmin is removed from etch, is there a good replacement?
if you don’t access a mule for 90 days, blizzard deletes it. that sucks
why in the world do you run a d2 client on a machine without video?
accessing them regularly sucks as well so I wanted linux to do it (with a little help from a program, an autoit script)
well, if you want a separate account for it you’re gonna need a second cd key
oh, to keep your acct around
if you wanna play and mule at the same time
keys are no problem. I usually do HF rushes with 7 mules
does anyone know if it’s possible to get sox with mp3 support in debian?
heh

I’m on debian I’m just saying, ubuntu is crap sorry
^^
sounds like an awful lot of work just to go all ‘LEROY JENKINS’ on a game
o dunno, gotta run iab… isnt this ubuntu nice ?
english?
ubuntu is a pain in the ass
at all, to explain. The etch server should be used from WindowsClients, so X-Forwarding is only possible with Cygwin-X or other Windows-X and harder to configure (for win-user) than VNC-Client (UltraVnc).
debian is the best without doubt
i like the fact that its out there and people are using it..but hell the way the root user is handled…funnnnky

Is there some magic way to get kernel-package to build for amd64 on i386 (I have 4gb ram and the app I need is particularly painful to use chrooted) - debian amd64 kernel is working fine - and gcc-multilib is working fine (i.e using -m64)
amd64 is beautiful
ls -d shouldn’t give directories ? t says only “.”
I’m still trying to understand the reason why Etch (stable) is so unstable while unstable is so very stable its like backwards regarding amd64
Nyle, because you’re using the wrong definition of stable.
maybe because of the admin
cause etch for amd64 isn’t really mature software
I’m probably wrong about half the shit I say anyway
sid had more time
ahh which is what I was thinking
The problems with a 64 bit kernel and a 32 bit userland seem have been sorted out anyway (well alsa and nvidia anyway are fine here)
audio/video transcoding seems almost twice as fast on 64bit I don’t know if this is percieved on my part, or if it is actually faster
It probably is
but whatever, its cool
anyone using debian/amd64?
ohhh gnome 2.20 just got released
I have lenny 64bit, never had problems with this, why have others?
Hi everyone!
wAndyw78, can you post your sources.list please?
Today I was totally confused by scanf() behavior
by speaking of source.list is there a tool to generate them like the netinstaller do ?
I have the standard one, never did a change
i mean by selecting country etc.
arglh. Is there *any* way to tell apt that “no, I don’t care, I’m not going to install a mail-transfer-agent, even if you think some package needs it!”?
wAndyw78, please, post it
go to debian.org, have a look at the mirror list
I thought that scanf “%d %d %d %d” of “1 4 2\n” would result in 3 and 3 variables processed. But in reality it continues to read stdin
i deleted mine
yeah i know that but there is no tool or a script or something like that?
have it on my laptop, which I have in my car… Very urgent?

if i wanna download a file with wget from an httpd and there is a ‘-’ in it. Do I have to escape it? e.g. wget “http://example.com/test/x-y.txt“
maxxle, I don’t think so
maxxle, pretty sure hyphens don’t need escaping, but certain other chars need escaping
why don’t use apt-spy, for example?
i can’t install anything
so - do I have to escape the ‘-’ ?
maxxle, try it and find out? or escape it anyway, it can’t hurt.
no why would you have to escape it?
hm - ok
Downloaded the source for clisp with apt-get source clisp. Now I can build the package with dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -uc -b but where do I tell it to build the package with the berkeley-db module support e.g. –with-module=berkeley-db ?
because if there is a blank in the filename i have to escape it too
yes
chrismay`: look in debian/rules
a blank is the shell argument separator
And browsers do use some other code for blank as well
yes + or %20 for example
/msg dpkg sources.list /msg dpkg mirrors
the problem is that i can’t download the file in iceweasel as well
hark, ? hm yes, hark but i need it for amd64
Maybe because example.com isn’t hosting any files?
hehe sure it doesn’t
Try some –very-verbose-plz flag for wget mayube *maybe
don’t worry about that.. apt automatically generates a URI with the current architecture
hark
I#ll go to my car….
so if i just use the regular lenny mirror means i will get a amd64-lenny?
is ftp.de.debian.org somehow broken? i have md5 mismatches since yesterday
if you use an amd64 installation cd, yes
i did, yes 4.0 netinst-amd6t4 -t
posted you my sources.list

uh have no private msg ?
you have to be identified first

what kind of card?
You need to put it in the exansion slot

pipatron i’ve just used udevtrigger and the sound is ok

I really don’t want to mess my distro, so how can i check which files it really creates? i’ve tried fakeroot, but the installer doesn’t run is there any tool for monitoring files created by given process?
strace
checkinstall
you know what
no
FUCK debian
tell us
fuck debian up the stupid ass
i’m installing the new lotus symphony. They don’t give source code so no checkinstall
Where?
in your mom’s basement. 2.6.18-5-486
She lives in an apartment
seriously do you realize how old that kernel is? how is that “stable”? it’s more like.. “ancient”
do you need help ?
2.6.18 hasn’t been used in fedora since fucking november of 2006 at the latest. at the LATEST
checkinstall has nothing to do with source code
too bad
strace? omg, i’m not such a hardcore user to use stace :/
yea, i need help figuring out why debian’s idea of “stable” is almost as old as ethernet itself.
I got my license plates!
DO YOU NEED HELP?
yippy
yea nigga
no more bus taking, I can drive again
if you’re just here to troll .. go away

wait, what did i say that was racist?
that was uncalled for, should give a warning first
“nigga” is not a racial slur, it is a term of endearment as a matter of fact.
Without any clue whatsoever about anything related to debian
no
hi all, how can i install dircolors (i want to have the same like i have under gentoo)

Do you get a lot of those retards here?
oh sorry
claudio`: you want -5-
nor apt-get upgrade and dist-upgrade install the version -5- on my system.
on the weekends, usually, yes
hey guys i have a question
weekday are mostly fine
no
can anybody answer it?
claudio`: do you have security lines in your /etc/apt/sources.list ?
no
!ask
“I have a problem with ___; I’m running Debian version ___. when I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___.” Don’t ask if you can ask, or if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask (ask the whole channel!). We’re all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don’t get an answer, ask later or ask debian-user@lists.debian.org
of course, i have
^^
claudio`: can you show it to me ?
sure
well you see
shut up
deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib non-free deb-src http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib non-free
my problem is that i can’t stop singing the theme to “happy days”
that are my security mirrors.
i watched a clip of fonzy jumping the shark last night
claudio`: aptitude install linux-image-2.6-686
now, it’s all…SUNDAY MONDAY HAPPY DAYS tuesday wednesday happy days
done
thank you kind sir
thank you claudio`: and what happened ?
np
claudio`: look on packages.debian.org
the -5- is istalling why “upgrade” and “dist-upgrade” don’t install it?
claudio`: and now you should be able to get your modules for ipw3945
for what?
the package you are looking for
claudio`: you didn’t have the metapackage installed
i already know what i’m looking for. THX
claudio`: I know, I was trying to answer you question
aaah, this because i done the expert installation
claudio`: the metapackage grabs the newest version ..
claudio`: its a new package, not just a new version of a package claudio`: the 5 makes it a new package
abrotman was quite helpful. THX anyway yes, but with the metapackage it works, indeed THX and THX to you, of course
too much THX!
and that should come from the security repo?
claudio`: debian has to change kernel / module versions if they break binary compatibility
afaik etch is frozen with -4 -5 is probably security related
claudio`: because this _could_ break custom modules for instance
yes, i’d read the release notes :p hx again *thx
wow you actually read the release notes you might actually be worth helping j/k
obviously that security fix broke binary interfaces ( between kernel and modules )
-.-
is there a way to tell python-ldap not to try to use SASL for ldap.initialize(’ldaps://some.host‘) ?
FFS .. fix your internet/client
i’ve added an entry to my hosts file to remap a name to a differnt ip than dns thinks it is but i think the old ip is still in my dns cache. how can i flush that?
reboot
you’re wrong?
well, ping pings the address i want but nslookup finds the old address
/etc/hosts should take precedence over any ‘cache’. At most restart the app nslookup never queries /etc/hosts
nslookup doesn’t use /etc/hosts
ahh okay
it just does what the name sais
yeah, restarting the app worked. i probably should have thought of that yeah, restarting the app worked. i probably should have thought of that
I’ve got 192kb worth 0.0.0.0 mapped hosts browsing is good that plus adblock totally kills all banners and ads, and browsing is fast. I also compiled a list of adblocked hosts for konqueror if anyone wants it, fairly comprehensive, and does not get int he way of browsing
just privoxy gets most
whats that?
a filtering proxy
how do i produce a patch file between two source directories?
is there any other way to override the CFLAGS in debian/rules besides manually editing the file?
diff -r
free?
!info privoxy

that’s what happens when you have your client on autoconnect/autojoin for too many loaded channels
usual is diff -Urn or similar. whatever means unified, recursive, new files as blank. I probably got the caps wrong
urn hehe set mode miRc hehe
that’s what happens when your client sucks thanks again
true.. if it paused between joins for a bit, it wouldn’t get the sendq error

is there a way to see which bus the d-sub is?
abrotman, np, may I pm you
uhm .. i think so are you allowed to deny staff ?
abrotman, yes
hehe .. yeah .. go ahead
and the politics of that are interesting
not if you insist on using a space between the question and the questionmark
i can’t help it!
then you’re not allowed to do *anything* until you improve
i’ve been doing it for years
maybe you’re french? :/
he would be lebrotman then
I guess a ban from #debian didn’t fix his problem
you’re not the first person to suggest that
hi
he’s still sendq’in in circles
i would like to use pidstat from package sysstat on my unstable machine to get the io usage of each process my kernel is 2.6.22-2 but neither pidstat nor atop work with me
What’s stopping you?
Kevin`: -Nru
my main man whatsup
atop says: No disk-activity figures available; request ignored
does it make any sense to run program from root acount using fakeroot? Will this program have write acces to my syster directories like /usr?
and pidstat just does not show anything
no, it’s FAKE.
What command can show me what version of gcc was used to compile my current kernel?
is there a special module to load?
Fakeroot means fake-/ As in, root directory
fakeroot gives no permissions at all
Not root user
its only there to accomodate a shortcoming of ‘tar’ for instance
same old
Well ok, not that simple
even if i run fakeroot from ROOT account?
fakeroot - run a command in an environment faking root privileges for file manipulation
it just does effecticely nothing
fakeroot doesn’t take any permissions from the runs that runs it
it just does effecticely nothing run as root
ohhh… i see
‘cat /proc/version’ seems to do it
now, if fakeroot would be so nice to do a unionfs and allow “writing” everywhere, that would be fun.
I think it basically makes the program you run with it _think_ you are root by messing with libraries
any ideas?
Hello all…can anyone point to a page describing the logic behind having the .so symlinks in the -dev packages rather than the main lib* package?
i’ve read that it should work on kernels greater than 2.6.20
hey
common any hints, google is not a great help either
?
atop needs to run as root not sure if it still needs an extra kernel module
i’ve run everything as root i mean pidstat and atop
kernel-patch-atopcnt - additional statistical counters for atop
how can I find out why is my X cursor hidden (presumably, by an app)?
What’s the “right” resolution for a 15.1″ widescreen? The 1024×768 seems to be a bit strange.
1280×768 maybe
uhm.. let me try
claudio`: anything fitting the aspect claudio`: anything fitting the aspect ratio
claudio`: 15.4″
widescreen sucks anyway
claudio`: though you should read the manual that came with it..
it’s the laptop ..there is nothing about.

what part of “there is nothing about” you didn’t understood?
claudio`: i dont believe you
claudio`: tell us the model and we’ll tell you the resolution
uh.. ok Acer TravelMate 4200
claudio`: look up the part number on the manufacturer’s web pages?
has anyone here used python-ldap on debian (with ldaps)? It seems to act differently than on other distros.
sure, there is only the *maximum* resolution supported, not the “suggested”.
1280×800
good, THX
google for 1 second
can you give me the URL you found, please? http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Acer+TravelMate+4200+resolution&btnG=Search
anyone else finding satellite data in Google Maps is showing up missing? San Jose, CA, close-in zooms turn up data unavailable.
this is what i tried but there is nothing of “official”, AFAIK anyway, i’m trying 2180×800. THX
http://www.superwarehouse.com/Acer~TravelMate_4200-series.htm
That seems to be the maximum resolution, indeed.
TFT/LCD only have one fixed resolution
yay NSLU2 debian
If you’re lucky it can resample other resolutions to that
is there a way to have a seperate Linux OS to run in “emulator” during a running session?
Plenty
you can certainly run linux hosting in a vm
qemu, xen, vmware, etc Then there was this I can’t remember now Running the kernel as a user process uml? user mode linux
the system is not recognizing my 2nd dvd-rw drive, where should i start troubleshooting?
the bios maybe
craig, virtualbox maybe ? but the are all so heavyweight if that is the right word
worked fine under windows, fresh install of debian as of 1 hour ago
Okay, just checking. IDE?
scsi
Weirdo
lol
hello. My name server resolves say host.example.com to the internet as 1.2.3.4. I’d like that same name host.example.com resolves to a different dedicated ip hosting (say 10.0.0.100) if it is being queried from my local LAN. Is this possible?
yes
pickcoder, how?
Everything is possible, unfortunately
anyone know how to play a cd in analog mode (not cdda) on linux?
asulao, (1) set up your own dns server (2) customize as you want
set up a DNS server on your LAN and serve a zone for your LAN network
Check out dnsmasq
I’m using bind is it possible with bind ? Eulex, I have my own dns server already
If you know how to configure bind you wuldn’t be here asking
is there a way to list all my drives?
I’m trying to have it serve different IP depending if names are being queried for from my local LAN of from the Inet. pipatron, I’m not bind expert, that’s why I’m asking
dunno, check /proc/bus/scsi/ maybe
like in fdisk -l ?
yes
xD how?
setup a local domain zone then you need to allow recursion and transfer on your DNS server, for you lan.
the device is not in /proc/scsi/scsi. all my other drives are. advice?
rejected
lol, thanks anyhow
checked dmesg? dmesg | grep scsi
not in there either.. dmesg | grep -i cd | grep -i cdrom
I run Debian Sid x86-64 with the binary nVidia driver (so not running xorg 7.3). Over the past few days I have been experienced weirdness with X with various programs freezing (mainly firefox, but currently xfdesktop will not start). Is there some way to revert to the previous versions of stuff from before xorg 7.3 came out? And where can I find status on the nvidia-glx package being updated in Sid?
pickcoder, thanks I’d need to find out more, just followed the dns howto.
binary drivers ;(
Yes, binary drivers
so sad
it’s not an easy to explain thing if you’re totally new to bind you need to find an example online and hack it up
I have several zones in named.conf, which are queried depending on what is queried, right ? Say if host.example.com is queried then zone “example.com” is used to get the host Ok?
right
so where do I put my host.example.com resolution IF query comes from local LAN? I already have host.example.com to be say 1.2.3.4 inside zone “example.com”
are you using bind for external resolution?
Hmm… it seems to be working right now… xfdesktop just takes about 5 minutes to start…
yes both internal and external
Anyone know where I could find out about the status of the nvidia-glx package?
I’ve never hosted both on the same bind server
You could try removing the ‘–mswindows-delay’ switch
I would host my internal DNS on another machine and use the same domain zone
Okay, so what you people do is have a different dns server than for external right?
set the default gateway to the link that has the DNS server you want to transfer to that’s what _I_ would do… not saying that’s the only or right way
oh well, don’t have more machines
How many NICs in the server?
bind it to a local interface?
1
Yeah
erm
Ok, not then.
what about domain searches
Bah Details.
look at query-source
googling it…
I’m having a hard time figuring out how to set up shared keys between my ubuntu system and the debian servers… I managed to get it working with the fedora servers, but I need some help now…
you could host both, but you’d have to do some port mangling on one interface
any opinions on balsa vs. claws as a gnome email client? or maybe a better alternative?
postgresql-client (= 7.4.0) | postgresql-client (= 8.1) but it seems that the libs are in postgresql-dev but only for 7.4? for 8 it’s already in? is there a way to do this check? can I grup then in ( ) ?
ssh-keygen on the ubuntu box, then add the id_*.pub files to the ed of .ssh/authorized_keys on debian servers?
pipatron, tried it
Or did I completely misunderstand you?
pipatron, you understood me, on the fedora servers i used authorized_keys2, i’m trying both on the debian server
actually..look at sortlist
In debian it’s just .ssh/authorized_keys
you may be able to put them all in the same zone file
Try ’ssh -vvv server’
I’ve never done that, though then again I’m no expert
what is a fast and lightweight gnome email client?
See if that tells you anything of interest, also ‘tail /var/log/syslog’ or something on the servers mutt
pipatron, http://pastebin.ca/706397
Your keys are messed up it seems
that will probably expose your internal IPs though, unless you can find a way to block that
pipatron, it works on other servers though…
From the same client?
yup
Interesting.
it’s worked on 2, not working on this 1, haven’t tried on the other debian server yet
there is no lightweight gnome stuff anymore (its polluted with mono and java and python etc)
h3sp4wn, somewhat true, but there are still some C stuff
How the ***** could someone think actually coding gnome apps in C# would be a great ide?
well, if you could restrain your app set to be only python, or only mono, or only java, that wouldn’t hurt much
h3sp4wn, i know claws is pretty fast, but not sure about its stability
pickcoder, I wouldn’t want that local IPs get exposed if possible.
pipatron, 700 for .ssh and 600 for the authorized_keys file?
Yeah
concerning query-source: the way to use it would be to have several zone “example.com” with query-source option inside with different query-source IP ?
pipatron, ……..it worked on the virtual debian server running on that same debian server
So it’s a PEBKAC
pipatron, i hope i’m not that dense
You could add some extra logging to the server /etc/ssh/sshd_config, there’s an option called LogLevel, you can set it to VERBOSE or DEBUG
jelly-home: could be solaris but I doubt its changed that much underneath - between solaris 10 and solaris express now (It shouldn’t be crappy with 4cpu’s and 4gb ram) - btw compiling an amd64 kernel on i386 is not difficult with gcc-multiarch (I guess you probably figured it out now anyway)
pipatron, it was pebkac
no.. it’s an option
Good
thanks for pointing that out
that’s where external queries come from
It usually is
what the hell is this? b.0: state=3, current
If I add a user with adduser, do I have also add the same user with same passwort with smdpasswd -a ?
otherwise external queries go out the default interface
i got a router that writes that to the syslog..several times a min
I’d say “yes” Don’t quote me on that though
ya ya do wAndyw78 last i heard you did
In theory I guess they could use PAM oslt
there are front ends for doing all that im sure
but what happens, I only one passwort will be changed? I think this is stupid
No Normally you don’t want to add 400 complete users to your fileserver
its not stupid..beats the hell out of a system that is soo integrated that you have to remove permisions for all the other users on the syste.
what would i do, if so?
You modify your adduser script to also cal smbpasswd *call
how does one use samba server ?
ah, okay…
apt-get install samba swat
!samba
rumour has it, samba is a Unix implementation of Windows file and print sharing (the SMB protocol), a good tutorial in English can be found at http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/using_samba/toc.html , or http://www.samba.org , or #samba, or read O’Reilly’s book online (http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/samba2/book/toc.html)
that means i want to have 3 user, each should have access to their home directories on the linux box then i have to: add 3 users to create their home dirs and then add these 3 users mit smbpasswd and the username and passwd MUST match?
our 130,000 dollar NAS uses a cifs server..(when i have to dig into it i swear its just an expensive samba server, and the os is definatly linux)
The samba password doesn’t have to match the linux password
that thing is a workhorse.
Okay, thanks. but the username has to match if they wan’t to access their home directory ?
Not necessarily, you can configure that as well But by default, samba exports their homedirs There’s an annoying “feature” in samba/SMB, you can’t export a folder called ‘pipe’ Which happens to be my username everywhere… So everyones homedirs works, except mine..
heh
okay, it works: Thought it would be sufficient to add linux users. But it is possible to add SMB user without linux users?
I think so
I’ll try
how do I easily export latin-1 gtktalog report to csv? …
with perl. next question?
What would be a good name for an LVM Volume group? atm im thinking along the lines of ‘File System’ or ‘File Server’
vg0 or vg00
I’m asking just for the sake of complementarity, not really expecting that anyone would have experience with this problem cdcat crashes on import btw ok, thx
pipatron can you give me a reason please?
it’s the defacto default naming scheme
damn, maybe I should try to hone my non-existant coding skillz with that one (with python though)
naming it something else is like installing something on D in windows. It works, but you bet that something will eventually break it
HM anyone know why it says (microsoft) after the mac address of my default gatewat gateway
pipatron so the first volume group i made should be vg0 and then vg1 after that and then vg2 etc?
Why are you planning on having so many?
You can call it anything you want - mine is called tank
pipatron multiple hdds
I think debian installer names them vg00
how do I debug a program which is started from a script?
The point with LVM is that you pool your HDs
pipatron multiple operating systems then
But yeah, you can name them whatever you want, but I’d avoid any spaces You’ll have to type escape chars until the end of time Also, it’s dead easy to rename volume groups afterwards
leave a decent amount of free space though for snapshots etc
pipatron how do i rename volume groups?
What program? What script? vgrename
pipatron thanks
a compiled C program, which is launched from a shell script; and I want to debug the C program using GDB
You have to edit the script Or that’s the most trivial way to do it
#gdb directed me to gdb –args, I’ll check that
You could most probably also hook yourself up to the program at runtime, but I don’t know anything about gdb really
yes, I know how to debug running programs (attach #pid), but this program crashes at startup
So fix it Then debug!
it’s not my program it’s gnome-keybindings-properties so pretty complicated
Linux, bsd, solaris, macosx are all unix right?
linux isn’t, the rest are
yes, at least all the APIs are the same
No - only solaris and the new macosx are (other than BSDI)
Unix itself is a trademark I think, and thus Linux isn’t Unix
why are other BSDs not Unix?
\amethyst: because its a certification
ah
am I going crazy or has xserver-xorg suddenly added fglrx-driver as a conflict?
gnome-keybindings-propertis is probably written in java running on top of a C# interpreter written in python
heh… no, but they have some kind of strange infrastructure around these gnome-control-center applets the program crashes in main, calling g_free and then free
I just noticed that gnome-trashcan-applet has allocated 4MB of heap just for nothing at all apparently didn’t check the source, I was just checking who was using the memory in my computer
isn’t that typical for Gnome
Yeah But I’m still using it
well, I wouldn’t care about gnome, but the gnome session demon thingy somehow blocks some of my keyboard keys
evil.
so I tried looking into it, but the keybinding config program crashes, so I have to debug it
good luck
I’ll need that
hiii
is ‘File.System’ and ‘File.Server’ one word? and is a volume group more like a file system or a file server?
a volume group is like one huge harddrive
how can i reset my network is it still xinet.d or somthing
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO/anatomy.html
/etc/init.d/networking restart
ta
I think i will name my volume group ‘Filesystem’
Normally you want as few volume groups as possible
how do you execute a file with a . in front of it ? /smthn/.file or ~/
is lenny going to stick with kernel 2.6.21 or is the final release going to use 2.6.22?
yes.
which one
Whichever works
there’s nothing special about .
likely something a few versions on even that is not made yet
that’s a good bit off still
2.6.31 probably
http://thepiratebay.org/blog/86 a href=”http://thepiratebay.org/blog/86″http://thepiratebay.org/blog/86/a a href=”a href=”http://thepiratebay.org/blog/86″http://thepiratebay.org/blog/86/a”http://thepiratebay.org/blog/86″http://thepiratebay.org/blog/86/a/a
TPB is well funny
Whats the main lenny repository?
undesktop, ehat / what even
?
there’s nothing special about .
If you can’t execute a file starting with a dot, the dot is not to blame
well, there isn’t I think
What happens when you try?
i typed my question wrong it was meant to have a comma ive worked it out anyway
./\,file should work in worst case
Whats the main lenny repository? All I have are the ones from security.debian.org
I tried debian etch before but my dvd-rw drive did not work, i am too noob to fix it and it made my boot up time incredibly slow
noob
i am waiting now for a new dvd-rw drive or lenny to use a kernel version which allows me to use my nvidia graphics card sucky ubuntu for the time being.
Nothing wrong with ubuntu Except gnome And firefox etc
anything wrong with xserver-xorg-video-nv, for that matter?
its harder to perform a custom installation with ubuntu
!tell Sir_Sid about mirrors
peterS i need 3d rendering
people talk like using the proprietary vendor driver for nvidia graphics cards is actually _required_
and kde. and automatix. and bloat.
pipatron and no root user at install pipatron less secure and stable, lower quality of release and shorter release cycle
people also talk like going to college is _required_
automatix doesn’t have much to do with ubuntu though
indeed
vice versa is the problem
strange, I could solve my problem with Gnome, but according to the source it shouldn’t have crashed
Anyway, the right tool for the right job - if ubuntu sucks, then don’t use it I’m happy using it on my thinkpad, but I prefer debian on the servers
i love these linux commands locate ffs!
oh dear… can anyone tell me the reason why my next-track multimedia key doesn’t work, but my previous-track key works? …
its like you demand and the os provides it serves you
now try ‘man find’ and see if you love that too
xev and slap the key
or ‘man dd’
disk duplicate
seen that one
data dump diskwrite/read is only a subset of dd’s capabilities
cool
I know… this was how I did setup all these multimedia keys… but nvm, I think I just have to restart the application which grabs the multimedia keys…
how can i change my terminal winow to customise it or make it col
is there anyone here who is skilled in perl scripting? If so, please PM me so we dont get off topic.
i mean black on white is cool but..
When is the feature freeze, kernel freeze for lenny and will lenny come with compiz fusion?
/join #perl maybe
read your .bashrc
what reasons could there be that my keyboard’s numlock led work, but the caps lock and scroll lock don’t light up? I’m relatively sure it’s a software problem
/etc/bash.bashrc that one ?
capslock is definitely a hardware problem.
meh
If you want to change the colours in the terminal, just point and click in the menus
or `grep -i color ${HOME}/.bashrc`
well i was thinking more of the translucent windows you see in the screen shots of elite linux systems
what menus?
no bootinfo…. thank you all.
look at his questions
that’s pseudo-transparency.
upgrading compiz metapackage doesn’t pull in the newer versions of dependencies
well, in some cases
what term is he using?
obviously a graphical one with, you know, fancy borders and stuff
so how can you be so damn sure that he even has a menu?
I’m not
“fancy borders and stuff” is WM-related, not term-related
Yeah
btw, do you know if tritium support xinerama reasonably well?
I know that, you know that, he doesn’t know that
Hi
are you talking about me roflcakes
yes. .bashrc has a little segment on how to get color
ok cool also one more thing gnome and kde are both window managers right ? what is x then
X is X.
they both sit on top of x so to speak
W
no, desktop environments. X11 is the graphical server.
I am running debian etch with 2.6.18-5-686 kernel in virtualbox http://virtualbox.org , and I keep getting this error
gnome and kde are like, ‘desktop environments’
ok cool
“Spurious NAK on isa0060/serio0. Some program might be trying to access hardware directly”
a window manager is actually another part
Whats up with this ?
assuming that you’re using gnome with the defaults: Metacity is your paint job, gnome is your highway, and Xorg is your traffic signals.
its not harmful…but really annoying when I am un a text editor it will actually put that error into the editor
well put
metacity, fyi, is the default wm for gnome. and it stinks. fyi.
thanks for breaking it down in fun size pieces for me
that is his opinion. fyi.
So what’s the car?
I think metacity is great
You made a car analogy without the car…
why does it stink?
i know. that’s the beauty of it.
“You” are the car.
well how do i get the cool looking ones im gonna google
but seriously…my problem ?
, undesktop: ps aux.
k 1 sec
there is no car
heh
you want the list ?
? ps aux lists all processes, but what does it have to do with metacity?
Nothing its another problem Im having scroll up
shift+pgup
no, `ps aux|grep metacity` is what’s wrong with metacity
until you alt+ out
Pjj ram…right it does like that doesn’t it anyhow do you know how to fix my other problem ? “Spurious NAK on isa0060/serio0. Some program might be trying to access hardware directly”
what WM then?
I say screw both of them windowmaker ftw
what’s your problem with that message?
ctrl+alt+1 is your friend
it wont stop popping up
!printk
i heard printk console is see docs for sysctl and set kernel.printk to 3 4 1 7 or so. You can also use ‘dmesg -n1′ command. If you want to know what those numbers mean, see the file Documentation/filesystems/proc.txt in your kernel sources.
Its really annoying
err, F1
you could unload whatever module is responsible for that thing (sounds like serial ports?)
it pops up every 5 seconds or so ahh I can just “Turn those off” in virtualbox also
…
oh that kernel runs in Virtualbox?
yeah…I said that before
If everything was that easy
maybe faulty hardware emulation
it doesn’t matter
are you asking what WM I use? IceWM. ’nuff said.
who needs serial ports now anyway ?
I do
not me
I use IceWM too, but it’s aging and also is SLOW
anyhow…I just instaleld sudo How do Iadd my user to the sudoers file Iread the man page…I still don’t get it what do I have to put in there
text
you know what I meat
oh, and sometimes it really misbehaves; i.e. I can’t run GIMP under IceWM, somehow it locks up
meant
geez. `su -c “visudo” `
that’s keyboard, not serial port. Don’t move your cursor in and out of vbox window, then it won’t appear so much.
