which web server, what version too

my hostserver … i updated sarge to etch

exactly where are you reading that message?

Is it possible to have two people logged into Gnome at the same time, one via VNC or another remote system and one on the computer itself?

also, what exact trouble are you getting? (I know you gave me a message, but you did not offer its complete context)

Hello. Can anyone help me convert my capslock key to a backspace, and make the changes permanent? I try to do it with xkeycaps, but the changes only last until the next reboot

its sarge with 2.6.9 kernel , i updated my server with change of apt.list to etch

oh dear

so update the whole thing to etch

root@backup:/etc# rsync rsync://pub@192.168.0.198/pub/; Password: @ERROR: auth failed on module pub; rsync error: error starting client-server protocol (code 5) at main.c(1383) [receiver=2.6.9] I took out a couple of the line breaks. can anyone help me with this. can the dpi of the mouse be lowered?

so what do you intend to do?

i must –purge my old java from my server

try dpkg –get-selections | grep jdk

and , i cannt find name of my old java with apt commands or dpkg

try dpkg –get-selections | grep jdk how many lines is that?

sun-java5-jdk install

could that be your old one?

but … java -version java version “1.4.2″

try this… dpkg -s sun-java5-jdk | grep Status | wc -l

i cannt upgrade to 5

try that anyway

My grandfather says that too and he is a very successful man but he likes to sleep now

i think , maybe is new java blacklisted for confixx ?

how to drag the version out of javac

course thinking sleep when im dead is also why im dragging my ass around the last 4 weeks

tomcat runs only with JAVA 1.5 and higher

geo-rge: java compiler -version

lol

no joy

Eclipse Java Compiler v_677_R32x, 3.2.1 release, Copyright IBM Corp 2000, 2006 … hehe

sleep is way underrated

that’s not that sun-java5 thing ok, try this try dpkg –get-selections | grep sdk how many lines does that make

nothing

for java, it’s best to install to a local directory for the user wishing to run java then export JAVA_HOME and add JAVA_HOME/bin to your PATH in .bashrc

there’s anopther dynamic going on try dpkg –get-selections | grep jre

,man i ghave to go to work 1 hour early today go meet with an IT department of a financial company

i wish i could but I don’t know how to operate computer sorry

can i try –force with apt-get install ? i have i after broken server ? heheh

just hump that reel of tape over there to that big tape drive… mount it… don’t touch the surface of the tape! and don’t touch the tape head!!

if you have to ask, you probably shouldn’t.

oh you idiot! the take up reel! you can’t start the tape drive if there’s no take up reel!

!confuse geo-rge

No, how was our gouda today, geo-rge? lederhosen of the monarchy of belarus with extra herring

I did an onsite yesterday for 8 hours at a company 1200$ even + I made money off some networking equipment 8 freaking hours I hate windows networks, and I know thats what I’m gonna have to do

so you’re a network guy or a con artist?

today

150/hr

hi, i got scsi raid m7902. ive tried to set up 2 hd’s with raid 0 in bios, but when i tried to install debian, seems the raid not exist, and i can see 2 hd

not bad

how much of that goes to you and how much to the company you work fo rthough?

that’s called fakeraid ^^

that went to me all of it

nice

yesterday was my day off

so you do realize that’s really worth 3 dollars / hr?

I do my own work on days off geo-rge: ?

http://www.tyan.com/product_accessories_spec.aspx?pid=3

c_newbie, I would strongly recommend using mdadm (software raid) over fakeraid

wanna see a really fucked up movie?

sure

stoned, google bambi. Most messed up thing you’ll ever see

Could not create the Java virtual machine. Fehler beim Bearbeiten von sun-java5-bin (–configure)

hey f you man bambi is fucking awesome I grew up watching that movie don’t diss bambi or i’ll kill you well not really, I’m just kidding ;D

is it fake raid?

but bambi is wicked

can you keep it on-topic, please

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1656880303867390173 tere ya go

c_newbie, it has no dedicated memory or processor, I would call that pesudo/fak raid

“enjoy”

what? doesn’t matter to me dude

seems like fakeraid to me though

useradd -d /noobjail -p 12345 nooblet it does go to /noobjail when i try to log in. why??

movie was done by the same guy that produced “Trading Places”

doesnt***

geo-rge: can you please keep it on topic?

I thought you said “sure”

at least you need to set up a driver to be able to use it .. it might have it’s own processing power for parity but definitely no own memory…

!ot

#debian-offtopic is not a place where nolife from #debian can come at will and feel at home. find another place ffs

how do i get java on 64bit?

please see the Raid LEvels information at this page: http://www.tyan.com/product_accessories_spec.aspx?pid=3

Rhoruns__ - man useradd and check out the way you’re executing that adduser program, presumably you’re making that your home directory

it said Supports HostRAID™ hardware mirroring

yes i am. but i dont see any example as to how i should format it it doesnt make sence to me i tried /home/noobjail, but that didnt work either

that is no clue whatsoever

was on topic. the topic was your wages

Rhoruns__, what are you trying to achieve?

im trying to make a small shell account for my friend and i dont want him exploring my directories i jsut want him to have 1 file

if you see two drives it acts as a normal controller right now. eitther it is fakeraid or you need a special driver to be able to use it

you will have to run it in a 32bit chroot, or you can get the java jre and java bin but there is no browser plugin in 64bit

give him an acct on an old pos machine

its hostraid tho :/ from adaptec

this IS and old POS machine

and needing a special driver usualyl means fakeraid anyway

it’s a 600mhz celeron lol

you can run java apps but not a java browser plugin, without 32bit firefox or an entire 32bit chroot

adaptec makes scsi controllers .. that doesn’t mean it has raid capabilities

Rhoruns__, most likely what you want is to chroot jail him

oh

I’m not sure how to achieve this but now you’ve got something to google

ok, thanks

Some adaptec scsi controllers can be extended with a raid module

time to go to work

bye stoned, take care

thanks, bye guys

what a rude factoid

stoned, enjoy your windows adventures

error starting client-server protocol (code 5) at main.c(1383) [receiver=2.6.9] - anyone know what this might mean? with rsync

is that mean : http://www.tyan.com/product_accessories_spec.aspx?pid=3 — its a fake raid?

c_newbie, although the term maintains and element of ambiguity i’m going with yes

crap, tyan lied to me

a) it has no dedicated processor, only a single IC b) it has no memory

!fakeraid

Term used for controller cards that advertise raid functionality that is NOT supported by a hardware chip for parity. Most of these have only a bios … if you use them with Debian it’s suggested that you don’t set a raid in the bios and just use regular software raid. dmraid

its a sodimm tho

that’s the interface on the expansion card where’s the physical memory module

i see

not really a way to tell

is it good to create raid 10 with fakeraid? its for db tho

IF it is fakeraid, use the normal software raid from debian

c_newbie, there are reasons for and against. In this day and age you’re better off using software raid rather than relying on fakeraid unless it’s a low spec machine in which case you should be a _real_ hardware raid card

imho main reason being software raid is easier to set up and will work even if the controller has to be replaced someday

buy*

dpkg, no ot is Please keep the discussions in #debian on-topic (i.e., Debian support), or return to the topic after a short while. #debian-offtopic is the place for longer off-topic discussions between regulars

i need your expert suggestion tho, ive spend money to buy this stupid m7902 *fake*-hardware raid already…

okay

technically i looks more like you bought a scsi controller card :-D

ouch..

Can someone help me to get my HP6100 Office Jet Working. It s a new Debian 4.0r1 install. It detects the HP as a local printer. The printer dialog says it is ready. But when I try to print a test page it says “job stopped”. It works fine “out of the box” on Ubuntu. Any suggestions?

just want to remind you .. that what it looks to me .. could be wrong, never had one of those

so its ok to make dmraid running for raid 10 (db mysql innodb) with 4 scsi 15k?

c_newbie, I’ve setup 30 boxes with debian running mdadm including 2 with multiple raid5 arrays. In your situation I would be using that scsi controller without the raid functionality and setting up with mdadm

why would my disabled startup programs Continue To Start Up?

naturally

hello

taime1, how did you disable them?

with the sesions manager

hi, how cani k now which is the bigges file in my server?

i suggest using mdadm, you can easily set that up in debian setup

well my HD ran out of memoery and i am not sure the cause of it

wow so loaded!

fireba11 mdadm?

taime1, i’m unaware of this program you’re using. Presumably it’s bundled with your desktop environment? KDE/GNOME?

gnome

I asked some time ago about upgrading from Ubuntu install to Debian and was advised not to do it because the resulting system would have some Ubuntu leftovers. Ok, what if I right now I don’t care about leftovers, I just want to be as close to Debian as possible. Will eg. installing Debian’s libc6 break the system?

there’s a few things you can do. du -hx –max-depth=1 /

No one can help with my printer problem?

its, cool, i guess im looking for a way to do it manually anyway at this point

so install the os 1st on the 1st hd, then use the fake raid running the whole thing?

What applications, in particular?

then du -hx –max-depth=1 /bleh where /bleh is the biggest folder found

taime1, okay. Short of asking them (you’ll probably not get an answer) you’ll want to get up a shell

gaim, and beryl..oh and cairo clock

and use update-rc.d -r name of thing that’s starting

you can also use ls -laSrh in a certain directory to give you a listing of files in that directory sorted by size “largest last”

im in a shell

morning

df -h will show you which partition is full

taime1, double check the switched for update-rc.d before you run it though switches*

you are speaking greek

nope. you use the debian isntaller to set up raid and install on raid directly .. at least that’s the suggested way to do it

anyone tried it?

You *might* want to upgrade to Gutsy first, then to Debian– I think Gutsy uses the same libc6 as Debian. You *might* want to upgrade to Gutsy first, then to Debian– I think Gutsy uses the same libc6 as Debian.

taime1, what’s the app you want to stop?

gaim, beryl and cairo clock

well i need to get info of the entire disk

i love hardware

ok, thanks!

not only in the current directory

np

i prefer software.

is there any tutorial for it? coz i want toinstall raid 10 tho.. not 0 or 1

Does anyone in here use Splashy?

kinda confused

the installer can set up all kinds of raid levels … weit a moment i’ll pick the manual for you

what’s your favorite program?

coz im installing the server with net-etch

taime1, I have a feeling gnome does something different to what i’m used to (which is removing startup links with update-rc.d) so you’d best ask in #ubuntu or #gnome

http://www.us.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch06s03.html.en#di-partition there we go

predder`: no problem

I have a .deb package (of my own making). When I apt-get it, I do NOT get the “enter name” screen - so after “apt-get install” I am forced to run dpkg-reconfigure to set the configuration options …any idea why one works and the other doesn’t?

just to make sure — installing another libc6 *would* break the system, right?

what the heck?? bayo1:/# usermod -d /home/nooblet/noobjail nooblet bayo1:/# su - nooblet No directory, logging in with HOME=/ nooblet@bayo1:

c_newbie, it’s not very difficult. Given the importance of your machine I would suggest you do a lot of reading and double check your controller isnt doing any funky raid stuff you dont know about with your drives

sorry about that . didnt think it was that big

More or less, yeah.

hi all

ok, thanks

Rhoruns__, u need to specific the home dir of user

ok i took lvm on 1st hardrive

That’s far too open-ended to answer.

man usermod

can you give me an example?? please?

usermod -u blabla -d /home/dir

oh ill try that

Any deb package experts here?

hi all. which ftp server can use another file instead of /etc/passwd for user/passwd?

np… just out of curiosity, why are you wanting to switch?

proftpd

about all fo them

really?

proftpd does for sure

StyXman, I’ve used proftpd before which doesnt require system user accounts (as Bluechip said)

nice

http://www.wkccp.com/paste2/view.php?id=43ad796cbf it doesnt work at all

because I’ve been using Debian for yeard and had to install Ubuntu in a hurry and had no net connection nor any Debian CD around. Then I once or twice installed some packages I needed from Debian repository and now, well, I can’t install libc6-dev just because

there are also a bunch of tools for proftpd which are worth hunting down - especially if you are planning on implementing quotas

not being able to compile PostgreSQL sucks and since Debian installed doesn’t work on my machine I’m trying to find some way out of this mess bnot being able to compile PostgreSQL sucks and since Debian installed doesn’t work on my machine I’m trying to find some way out of this mess /b

only 2500 words to go

awesome

that where you take something which was free and GPL it

Rhoruns__,

hi dvlsleep. lol

it’s funny, i’m on HD’s in my advanced third year courses and having great difficulty with this stupid first year pass/fail course

now I hope you understand it

Crystal-clear… Which packages did you install from the Debian repository?

dvlsleep, what do i do?

sorry

Because PostgreSQL marks for installation fine here (on Gutsy)

wrong syntax

lol ok

usermod -d home/dir user

k..

to verify cat /etc/passwd | grep $user

eg. postgresql, Ubuntu Feisty had some ancient 7.x version second thing — I’m fed up with having to *restart* the system each time network settings change

http://www.wkccp.com/paste2/view.php?id=a5ee94e700

8.2.4 is the default version in Gutsy

does anyone know how to get java on 64bit/

What do you mean? Can’t you just run “sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart” or “sudo NetworkManager”?

hey guys

hi

praecox, what about us girls

lol

well, us fbi agents pretending to be girls

I’d like to install Debian on one of my old server.

you mean the 50 y/o guys with the beer guts?

predder`, sorry, dude.

no, DNS data isn’t updated no matter what but I haven’t tried /etc/init.d/networking restart

I have successfully downloaded and burned netinstall ISO CD.

but plain ifdown eth0 ; ifup eth0 doesn’t work

cool praecox, need help with anythign in particular?

restarting from Network Manager doesn’t work either

praecox, question?

but unfortunately when I set up to boot from CD, it stops on “Verifying DMI Pool Data…” and Linux doesn’t load.

does anyone have any clues as to where I can find help on creating .deb packages?

do you have any questionably old/broken hardware???

I checked CD on my workstation (much newer computer) and it works.

doesn’t work = resolv.conf is updated from DHCP but somehow system won’t see it

old Knoppix 4 and NND Linux distribution are booting well, without any problem.

praecox, okay, unfortunately that sounds like a hardware issue. The disc is alright so you’ll want to double check you’ve got the right option in the bios

oh

oh, knoppix boots? How old is old?

Rhoruns__, well, it’s dual Pentium III 550MHz, not *that* old stuff though.

hmm. strange i never had that problem. i’m assuming it’s something i’d run into while wardriving, right?

it should boot fine. try puttign in the disc AFTER verifying pool data

predder`, yes, Knoppix does boot without problem. Debian (and Kubuntu/Ubuntu CDs) just stucks. Rhoruns__, all right, let me try.

kk

praecox, well - perhaps you want to try oldstable (sarge) rather than newstable (etch)?

I know it should boot. I have installed a lot of Debians in my short carrier on much older hardware. that’s why I’m here and that’s why I’m surprised it doesn’t boot.

damn why it would take so long to lvm

praecox, check the errata list too? (iirc that’s what it’s called)

heh, no, eg. when I forget to plug network cable before booting up my laptop — it’s MEGA irritating

Rhoruns__, well, I removed CD from CD-ROM and booted. nothing happens after ,,Verifying DMI Pool Data…”

c_newbie, you’re adding lvm to your raid10? on top I hope

Rhoruns__, that’s kinda odd. but still, other CDs and Linux distributions boot.

that’s very strange

I can safely unplug network after system boots and reconnect it later — everything it ok. But if I forget to be connected when booting the system I have to reboot to go online. Insane.

I miss my dual p3

if i were you, i would try unplugging the CD drive, just for the hell of it, and see what it does. praecox

Now I see why deb packages is referred to as “a black art” …neither google nor irc can direct me to anything beyond the utter basics :/

Rhoruns__, how is he going to boot into a cd without the cd drive?

predder’, i got a dual-p3-xeon lol

weird. i never had that problem at all on mine

predder’, it should go past verifying pool data.

predder`: i got 4 hds and i set the partition with lvm it stil 80% tho

and say ‘can’t boot’, instead of jsut sitting there

its been more than 10 minutes already

c_newbie, didnt you want a raid10?

yes i want it i thought i have to format it with lvm?

why are you using lvm now before setting up the raid? no?!?

maybe Debian doesn’t have so many bells&whistles and clickable stuff but at least it does what I tell it to do

ouch

lvm goes *on top* of raid, not the other way around. You’ll want to setup the raid first dude

kernel panic, kernel is too old its a problem of glibc?

preder then how to install? install debian 1st

Rhoruns__, well, if I only change boot sequence in BIOS to any other than CDROM on first position, it passes verifying and says ‘can’t boot’.

am i right?

Rhoruns__, I have already tried this.

ohh

c_newbie, is the OS going to be part of the raid? or do you have a seperate os drive?

have any other CD drives?

no idea i never create fake-raid tho

c_newbie, remember what I said about reading a lot about it before you started?

thus i dunno how

you shouldn’t be going things you dont know about with a database server and expensive scsi drives

Rhoruns__, well, got one. let me try if it works with other drive.

do it. praecox

i used to with hardware raid

okay, well anyway.. are you doing a mirror of stripes or a stripe of mirrors?

i want to create as like as raid 10

Ahhh! that’s why i couldnt go the directory when i created the user… i had to manually make it with mkdir.. ROFL Ahhh! that’s why i couldnt go the directory when i created the user… i had to manually make it with mkdir.. ROFL

anyone can recommend a real nice serife font? something other like times…

sans serif is good

c_newbie, I think 10 is a stripe of mirrors

1+0 = 10 right?

yeah

raid 9000 is even better!

c_newbie, so you’ll first in the debian installer partition your drives, formatting as the linux raid type then you’ll go to the setup raid up the top and create a raid1 by following the prompts then, the resulting 2 raid devices you will again select the “formatting” as linux raid and then setup the raid again, raid0′ing the 2 raid devices into one

so i install the debian on the 1st hd first, right?

then you’ll have a single drive to work with which is effectively raid10 well you didn’t tell me if you had a seperate OS drive or not? is the operating system going onto the raid or is it for data only?

no idea tho i guess i willl use this 4 hd with raid 10 os is only need 1 gb databse will need the raid 10 itself

… but does the os go on the same physical disks as the raid or do you have a seperate one? ot

no i dont have

oh, finally. So the answer is “yes, the OS is going on the raid disks” boh, finally. So the answer is “yes, the OS is going on the raid disks”/b okay, well you’re going to want to figure out your partitioning first. Get out a pen and paper

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCJcvVWRABs

i am bos

Rhoruns__, all right! it works now.

ah!

Rhoruns__, but it’s absolutely weird thing.

it sure is, praecox

/boot - 100mb, / - 2gb, /var/log - 1gb etc I’m going to get back onto my assignment however it is very important you make /boot raid1 only, no striping

oh i forgot, my hd are 4x @73gb scsi

yeah, you mentioned that a while ago. I wish I had your resources - i’m stuck with freaking 7,200rpm drives in our dedicated db machine at work it’s hosting 8 other servers and has a hot spare yet the boss doesnt think scsis are justified

Bah, how do i lock my user to this dir? he still able to cd .. and wreak havoc .

predder`: Prepare a document that shows a monetary advantage.

how does he wreak havoc?

he wreaks havoc by looking at my files lol

predder`: and?

Then make it so he can’t.

how?!?! this jail thing doesnt make sence

Make your files 770, and make sure he’s not in your group.

hmm..

why not 700 :-D

c_newbie and what? did you do what I said? figure out your partitioning and sizes etc on paper? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Adaptec-IBM-ASR-3225S-128MB-FRU-02R0985_W0QQitemZ140153307103QQihZ004QQcategoryZ3753QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem – btw, c_newbie: that’s a *real* scsi controller. Battery backed cache and all

my HD is running out of memoery how can i know which file take al the place

*space*, not memory.

fastputty, that would only be true if your cache is not acting appropriately

du -sh is your friend

Arafangion, way to be blunt fastputty du -hcs to summarise a directory

predder`: I’d put in an -x as well.

any tutorial on web please?

about what ?

predder`: is there a command to get me the bigges file from all directory or something

hi all

I suggest you install kdirstat

you might alsu use ls -r with a nice grep attached :-D

i have a “AMD Opteron 200 processor / dual core” ASUS K8N. Which kernel do i need .. thanks kernel-image-2.6-k7 - Linux 2.6 image on AMD K7 - transition package ??? this one

kdirstat is a nice innovative graphical utility that shows you how your disk is being used up.

amd64 i’d suggest

can u tak a look at http://pastebin.ca/683981

fireba11, that’s poor advice, he should be warned of the 64bit implications

which one of them there are a lot of amd64

how can i remove grub from a live cd?

when the command ‘make oldconfig’ is ran where does it read info from? is it from /boot/config?

maybe this one ? kernel-image-2.6-amd64-k8 - Linux kernel image for version 2.6 on AMD64 systems - transition package

So much for ever seeing ZFS in the linux kernel. http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9034496

you will want either: kernel-image-2.6-686 or kernel-image-2.6-amd64-k8

ok thanks

about “how to create raid 10 on debian envi

where does the command ‘make oldconfig’ read from? is it from /boot ?

masus, I should mention the 64bit kernel image means you’ll need 64 bit libraries and your programs to support running in 64bit. If this is a problem I would just run the 2.6-686 unless you have a specific reason to go 64bit

64-bit does not neccessarily mean that your computer somehow goes faster.

there are ways around it (32bit chroot) but it’s up to you how much time/effort you want to invest

no i have not

what’s a good ipod manager for debian?

i have installed debian with “linux-image-2.6-486″ and now i need route support for iptables ROUTE so i have to install the kernel right ?

whats the command to see which processes are open on which ports on a local box?

alex^^: netstat -p

Pablo_, amarok is fairly highly regarded

chops, there is another

as a general music management program rather than just for your ipod though

how do i send secret naughty messages between users in ssh/shell? lol

alex^^ - netstat -taunp

alex^^: You should have asked for the other one, then :-)

could not open default font ‘fixed’. Which additional package do I need to install?

write

ok awww… write permission turned off how do i turn write back on?

where is the top level linux kernel source directory i cant find it

you shouldn’t need it, what are you trying to do?

package

i need iptables ROUTE module

is that a kernel module?

and there is writing that i have not the configs in the kernel so i have do “apt-get install kernel-image-2.6-686″

umm, sure. However are you sure you just haven’t loaded the correct module yourself? “modprobe modulename “*

is that all ?

the stock debian kernel has most things modularised. You can add/remove them at will

well, try it

ok thanks is there an output from modprobe or blank ? for example “modprobe ip_conntrack” returns nothing

lsmod | less and have a look if it’s loaded you could grep it but you might want more output

I believe that “mesg” is how you set write permissions for your terminal

ok

yes it is loaded thanks :P where are these modules located

in /lib/modules/

VGABIOS-lgpl-latest

why do you need bochs? I suggest to use qemu, rather unless you want to emulate cross-architecture

azeem, i am reading josh os, i am unable to boot with qemu

you’re welcome

azeem, i have no floppy in my computer, and dont know how to emulate correctly one for the bootstrap program that search KERNEL.BIN in a fat floppy azeem, how do i make kernel able to mount -o loop -t fat ?

I would like to connect to my VPN at work. It Just Works with our windows xp clients. I can get kvpnc to say that I am connected, but nothing seems to work beyond that. Help?

i dont understand why bochs does not work anyway

Even with cross arch, I’d still suggest qemu.

Hi, has anyone seen a working DAV setup which doesn’t list the files in the directory? I can login etc and if I blind change directory it works, just normal connection shows no files

Cheapest wordpress web host.

You need to add the bios firmware for boches to run.

predder` thanks this channel is wonderful and debian too

arafangion, i did google with VGABIOS-lgpl-latest, and found http://www.nongnu.org/vgabios/#DOWNLOAD, but they said it is shipped with bochs since 2.3, is somewhere explained why it is not into debian release?

Probably because of the license?

masus, this channel is the best thing just after the internet and some other channels almost at the same level

http://lists.debian.org/debian-firewall/2006/08/msg00021.html

arafangion, license, yes, but is it explained somewhere what debian did not put into realeases and for what problems?

masus - Debian? Oh crap I thought this was minix

minix is my next move

Tanenbaum certainly entertained the crowd (including Torvalds) at the last Australian Linux conf by giving out free minix cds

i intend to play, minix ubuntu, freebsd, netbsd, lfs, damsl, gentoo

it’s become a bit of an inside joke with my work colleagues who attended I was shocked to learn the Debian project leader lives/d only 60kms from my home too

what is the most stables ? gnome or kde

fastputty, that’s flamewar material right there. If they’re in the debian stable branch suffice to say you probably wont have many problems with either (use kde) *runs*

WHy is there no makefile in the etch-backports version of linux-headers-2.6.21-2?

sp3tt, because it’s the headers not the source? you can always roll your own and add the debian kernel changes manually yourself

predder`: right, then why is a makefile in linux-headers/scripts/basic required? I try to make-kpkg kernel-image but it fails because it can’t find that file

make-kpkg I believe is used to make a package out of kernel source (compiling inbetween). You need a makefile to compile and the headers are not the kernel source if that’s your goal !makekpkg !make-kpkg

from memory, make-kpkg is the Debian Way ™ to deal with kernel compiling - it makes a package for your custom kernel which you can install/remove easily ™ with the dpkg (pat. pend.) mechanisms. ‘apt-get install kernel-package’ then ‘man make-kpkg’ , or see also http://www.debian.org/doc/FAQ/ch-kernel.html or ask me about kp mantra

coz you need linux-kbuild-2.6.21 ?

sp3tt, do you understand?

predder`: I think so, I need to apt-get another package

Hello! Is it possible to copy a file replacing a part of its content with a bash or a shell script?

sp3tt, well basically you’re trying to compile the linux source code without the source code

yes, try sed.

maybe use cat and sed

Why use cat? Sed can read from a file.

sorry

a perl one liner would probably suffice too

“arch/i386/defconfig:175:warning” if i do this….dload 2.6.22.6 from kernel.org then tar xjf kernel….then i cd to that dir and do a ‘make clean’ then i do a ‘make menconfig’ AND here is where the fun starts….i load the /arch/i386/defconfig and it shows it loaded but this that error in beginning of this message

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=472370 - interesting bits at the bottom of the bug report

predder`: I never used perl

anyone use webdav it’s kinda working but not quite and i don’t know to debug

why would i get that error when its actually a 2.6.22.6 config im loading in menuconfig

it authenticates but i can’t see any files

predder`: I have linux-kbuild-2.6.21 and linux-headers.2.6.21.2 what else do I need?

they are there, as I can blind change directory into a known directory

why are you trying to re-compile the kernel? making changes?

Hi. When I change to a UTF-8 enabled locale, source code snippets in man pages have all the quote characters wrong (use the pretty unicode open and closed quotes, instead of plain ‘ and “). Is this normal?

How can i use Dejavu Mono font on urxvt? I tried to use the -fn flag with the argument ‘8×13,xft:ttf-dejavu:pixelsize=12:antialias=false’ but without results. I get some problema seeing some characted (i use UTF-8). I’ve tried to add the “/usr/share/fonts/truetype” and “/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/” to my xorg.conf file but without results. Does anyone have an idea?

if you’re using kernel.org sources and not compiling using make-kpkg, then you shouls take your question to ##kernel.

s/problema/problem

predder`: I need to disable PARAVIRT so I can use 3d acceleration.

s/characted/character

jelly, what’s “wrong” about that tho?

predder`: m-a a-i fglrx is not compatible with PARAVIRT.

can’t paste the code.

jelly, ah, it does it in code?

yes. read my line.

I don’t see that with LANG=en_GB.UTF-8

that means the man page was written wrong, to use typographic quotation marks rather than literal ascii…

Why can I get more information about sed? With sed –help I ca’t see any option that allows me to change a line of the file…

specific man page?

so it’s a bug in the particular man page

are you sure your terminal is UTF-8 capable?

ok; thanks!

http://backports.org/debian/pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-source-2.6.21_2.6.21-6~bpo.1_all.deb

so far to my point it is using make menconfig which is debian related re-read my Q

predder`: thanks, I’ll try it.

(i assume you’re working off backports right?)

no, pretty much any man page. LANG=en_GB.UTF-8 man muttrc shows eg. Default: ~/.muttrc

yep, definitely utf-8 capable. (konsole with a utf-8 font and set to utf-8 encoding) but that man page is fubar for me too.

trying to set up a cisco vpn connection, all the software wants an ipsec id and group password. i dont have those. help?

basically any Perl man page is, too

LANG=C man muttrc works though. man sprintf and friends are ok (that was what I checked to begin with) so I probably has a false negative on them being fubar

sed: -e expression #1, charter 9: order «s» not finished -e expression #1, charter 9: order «s» not finished

I wonder whether it’s man’s fault, or all of the man pages / their generators use slightly wrong codes

what’s the full command?

it’s bts time!

hi all

file2

if man sprintf can get it right, it’s probably the writer’s fault — the code snippet probably should be marked as such. (he says without having actually looked at what’s in the offending pages!)

hi, which repositorie do i have to add to my sources.list to install windowmaker?

perhaps a known-good man page can provide the info for you to know what’s wrong

heh. man perlintro does double-quotes all right, but single quotes not

is that unsecure: chmod +s /sbin/ifup(ifconfig und ifdown) ???

file2

how can i killa online user logged in the shell?

slay

man perlfunc is fine for me. Was there a specific perl man page?

thanks

Now it don’t crashed but it copyed the same file without mading any replacement

sprintf(3) does single quotes bad, too, I think. (including the trailing null byte ())

yep.. good catch. I was concentrating on the double quotes

In case you’re curious (and around at the moment), I believe I’ve tracked down the problem with my gigabit to busted offloading. I rebooted for the etch kernel upgrade (and some other maintenance), and my performance was still crappy even with all the sysctl parameters loaded. I’ve re-disabled all offloading, and it’s fast again. Further investigation will have to wait until I get a bit of my other work done. :-) Thanks again for all your help.

perhaps, if mozilla or someone else has an apt repository with it,

!iceweasel

from memory, iceweasel is the name of a DFSG-free fork of Firefox, which replaces Firefox in Debian starting from Etch. It is currently different from the browser with the same name from GNU (http://www.gnu.org/software/gnuzilla) although it is possible that the two projects will join forces in the future. To learn about the reasons for the fork, ask me about why iceweasel.

only installs free plugins or something gangsterlicious; good call

its not in the official debian repository

you’re mistaken

it says they forked are you stupid?

iceweasel is firefox without the artwork

means it’s 2 different projects.

they forked the name, ok?

because the artwork and firefox name is non free

it is firefox

fine

what is your question

yes, with acrobat reader….the most current version too….just updated

I am thinking that these so called ‘forms’ are really just .pdf image files without any editable fill in form boxes….that otherwise, this would work

thelostbutler you know bridging pretty well?

yes

re

guys some one here use awstats?

ok here is my first question on the guide….what is the topology that they are using? i know there are bridgin eth0 and eth1 but if they are doing that how are they getting out to the externel net….ex: eth0 = wan and eth1 = lan

no, i do not. i was interested in reading what was already out there. sorry

thelostbutler k explody i just dont get what they are trying to accomplish

I’m reading it, one sec better question might be what are _you_ trying to accomplish?

see my system has 5nics (1 for wan) and (4 for lan) i want it to act just like a regular store bought router…

no sweat

where the 4 lan nics are on same network

yep

right now they all belong to seperate netwoks but it is working but most likely not for internal lan

a regular store bought one uses masquerading, dhcp, and an internal (LAN-side) network

this is really quite easy, you can do it all inside /etc/network/interfaces the bridging part of course, not the firewalling

a regular store-bought switch/hub, however, acts different

explody would i use ebtables or iptables for the firewall with the way you suggested all in the /etc/network/interfaces file

iptables

sweet

can someone help me? im using postfix + maildrop and created a junkmail folder… but my mail client doesnt sync with it

guys some one here use awstats?

you will likely not be applying rules to your bridged interface

you want me to post my netstat -r and ipconfig -a on pastebin.ca

nope

how does ld look for libraries when using for example -lvorbisfile to gcc?

yea the eth1 (my external lan which is dhcp) i think i want to leave alone

i have libvorbisfile.so.3, is this not enough? must i symlink?

not external lan but external WAN

has anyone had this experience? I did ‘aptitude update’ and ‘aptitude full-upgrade’. When I press the ? key, it exits with a segmentation fault. exit code is 139.. I use Sid

k 1 sec

just found it.. bug #434860

heh p-a-v

explody it can NOT be that simple can it

to set up the bridge it can alter the IPs to suit your internal LAN

p-a-v: uhm yes, i just told you that too

well simple if you know what your doign

I am trying to compile http://rafb.net/p/l3VGSB55.html , but I get http://rafb.net/p/qxlXKv55.html . What’s the right reference for #include syscall.h?

explody and special settings i would need to set for the firewall? or dhcp or dns

only I was not listening.. until Ronin laughed

no, once you turn on the bridge like that, br0 is like any other interface, you can run services or whatever for your internal network

you treat the bridge as a single interface

but it will still need portforwading and masquerading right

yes well you might need prot forwarding port*

3.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Audigy LS” and am using alsa, but the audio is coming out very distorted where would you all start with

in the firewall i would change the script to br0 though right?

it’s good to learn iptables commands, but in the interest of expediency I’d recommend some iptables tool like shorewall

_uplinkd_, lower the volumes?

http://www.shorewall.net/SimpleBridge.html

the noise level is very high as well. and the volume is very low but distorted.

well i know a little about iptables from playing with it over the years just wasnt sure if i can use br0 as an -i interface

yes

sweet ok thnx alot man cant wait to try this

you cannot, however, filter between bridge ports without ebtables I believe

_uplinkd_, I’d experiment with the different controls alsa gives you. there’s not just volume settings.

but that should not matter in your case

Damnit. I just spectacularly dropped my Debian dvds and probably scratched them. :-( How can I do a low-level disk check?

just put it in the drive and see if it works

explody in that /etc/network/intefaces on your pastebin i dont see a command that actually creates the br0

md5sum /dev/dvd

do i need to create one first

the debian network scripts do it for you

there’s bridging howto

Uh, it works, but probably part of it is still scratched.

abortman im following that guide but its not a good one for my setup

I’m not seeing a fsck.iso9960 or whatever…

that’s not relevant

abortman this guide http://linux-net.osdl.org/index.php/Bridge is not a good one for me if thats the one your thinking of abortman this guide a href=”http://linux-net.osdl.org/index.php/Bridge”http://linux-net.osdl.org/index.php/Bridge/a is not a good one for me if thats the one your thinking of

What isn’t relevant to what? Oh, never mind.
