What does `ls -ld dirname` say?
rej, ls -ld prints out “ls: can’t access Gunslinger Girl: Input/output error” (I have it in spanish so the “can’t access” is just my translation) rej, ls -l shows this: d????????? ? ? ? ? ? Gunslinger Girl
Something seems wrong with the filesystem or the kernel’s interpretation of the filesystem. Maybe you need to enable Unicode support.
oh, it’s neither. the driver is something called openchrome
ah
hello all!! does anyone know what line in ,config is the libata module??
rej, I dont know if it’s good or bad but.. I’m unable to see the dir from Thunar (My file manager)
Don’t edit .config manually. Use menuconfig instead.
is there an emerge option that works so i can write for example “emerge kde”, so that it will just emerge packages that are not installed/newest version?
Probably CONFIG_ATA.
tej i am looking for the option with make menuconfig, but i cannot find it
In menuconfig, type `/’, enter a search term and press Enter.
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-589661.html this is my problem, and i do not really know if i finally need it
hello all Does anyone know since when and why gcc-4.2.0 is hard masked again?
Hi, anyone know if there is a way to make gdesklets stick to the desktop and not dissapearing with the rest of the windows when “show desktop” is pushed? Help appreciated.
Mibu-Kyoshiro: It isn’t “hard masked”.
another weird problem i have is that almost every file created by emerging new packages generates an empty file of the name “filename#_HIDDEN~”. anyone know what might be the cause?
rej, I just checked the kernel config and the unicode support is enabled
OK, how about USE=unicode in make.conf?
Mibu-Kyoshiro: for which controller?
Maybe it is, because I switched my make.profile to selinux.
Mibu-Kyoshiro: Yes, that might very well have unexpected side effects…
What do you mean with controller?
Mibu-Kyoshiro: you asked about libata options but you didn’t mention which disk controller you are using.
That wasn’t me. I had the gcc-4.2.0 question.
Mibu-Kyoshiro: oh, hmm. Mibu-Kyoshiro: so it wasn’t. my apologies.
rej, nope, in make.conf there’s no use=unicode I’ll try adding it.
any recommendations on an IMAP server that support maildirs and virtual users?
courier; there’s a guide on it on gentoo.org
Courier is what I use I think (only on FBSD)
www.gentoo.org/doc/en/virt-mail-howto.xml
im running courier on my other mail server, but i was just wondering..
I switched my make.profile back to default and the gcc-4.2.0 is not masked any more. Thx.
id like to use exim as mta though i like its integration with mysql
hey, question from a newbie.. how do I go from looking at the lspci and lsmod to finding the related drivers when setting up kernel using make menuconfig. For instance, I can see there is a driver loaded for my host controller when booting the install cd, but I can’t find it in among the device drivers in make menuconf.

Dark-Side: No such faq
shit
Dark-Side: Language, please. And you can /msg mzbot to try and find faqs.
‘A security policy in place prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient, see message bus configuration file (rejected message had interface “org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume” member “Mount” error name “(unset)” destination “org.freedesktop.Hal”)’ ? yes, sorry
rej, still won’t work
(I’ve this message when I want to acced to an usb device)
is there a way i can disable right-click doing the same thing as left-click in a menu that’s really annoying
kde ?
i’d tried to instal gentoo linux but it doesnt work.. i have to configure server serverX who can hellp me?
it happens in kde and gtk apps
Have you tried using the Handbook and performing a manual installation?
but it’s most annoying in konqueror
i dont know how to instal it manual i want to instal it on grafical instal
and in french it’s the menu “comportement” I don’t know in english, but try to find
teach cristi about handbook
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml
hi, i keep getting this error from gconf: Adding client to server’s list failed, CORBA error: IDL:omg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0 IDL:omg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0
The automated/graphical installers are considered experimental and may break on you.
any idea of how to solve this?
cristi, http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml
someone can help me ? *can someone help me ?
Dark-Side: whats the problem?
is it possible to use gparted while in x to resize my root partition? if so i how i do i unmount it? since im using it
probably not, id do it from a live cd
when I want to access to an usb device I’ve this message ‘A security policy in place prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient, see message bus configuration file (rejected message had interface “org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume” member “Mount” error name “(unset)” destination “org.freedesktop.Hal”)’ and I can’t open the device
Dark-Side: add yourself to the plugdev group
oh thanks
does gparted come with livecd?
yes
possibly
no, neither does partimage
ive got an only one
yes?
old one*
but there is a sysrescuecd.org or like, which is pretty nice, based on gentoo
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php
Dark-Side: if that doesnt work try the haldaemon group too, i also had to reboot. Dark-Side: you will at least have ot login again
thanks
is_null, there was a wrong rule in /etc/snort/rules/web-misc and i was watching the wrong logfile*ups*
ok
my next prob is… since i did emerge world my xdm/gdm goes to tty1 when my system starts, I have to hit cntrl +f7 to make it load into x how can i fix this
serverX failed to start ….that said when i tried to instal gentoo linux…. who can hellp me .. i’m new in linux
startc the cd without X?
:|… i tried to boot the cd an that wath said i cant install it .. (
err, you clearly have very little understanding of linux. Maybe another distro or some reading?
cristi, boot minimal livecd, and follow the handbook
or that
in /etc/conf.d/xdm is CHECKVT=7 ?
about 10 minutes ago my wifi died, and when i run “/etc/init.d/net.wlan0 start” i get SIOCSIFFLAGS: I/O error
cristi, the handbook and instructions to display it are shown after startup
but it doesnt start…
I just read that as “10 minutes ago my wife died”
cristi, do you have linux host installed??
yes
cristi, you said something about X… ah
sabayon..
sabayon is not supported here
up to now i am installing gentoo through debian
cristi, try #sabayon
ya
and i find it better than live cds
through a debian live cd you mean?
erm
no, through my system with chroot
well. i have sabayon.. and i want to instal gentoo linux… but wen i boot de dvd it gives me the eror whit server x
then get the minmal cd it doesnt have an X server.
anyone?
it means you have to install it manually though the command line
yes i have to do that… but i don’t know how manualii…
you don’t want an xserver to install gentoo from anyway just follow the handbook http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml
hi guys ifplugd doesn’t work (
anyone?
cristi, I notice .ro in your uri. Does that mean you are in Romania?
yes
ifplugd works fine, whats your error?
hey, is it possible to write to ntfs partition from gentoo/linux?
maybe resolved
yes, if you install ntfs-3g
cristi, There is #gentoo-ro Not many there, but it does exist.
with ntfs-3g using fuse it is
yeah, ive seen the kernel now supports write? without ntfs-3g
eh? FULL support for it?
Im sure i saw an option in the kernel i compiled recently
ok tanks
thanks ehnvis, Frigolit, budwaa
was flagged *new*
what is the command that tells what is mounted on /dev/hdb etc?
heh, it has said “new” for a long time afaik
cristi, no problem
that write support has been there for a long time and is only partial
TheGateKeeper, mount | grep /dev/hdb
Frigolit : yup doenst work here, was hoping i wouldnt need to install ntfs-3g.
:3 ntfs-3g works great
yeah, it does, im just lazy.
;D
i wouldnt recommend it for regular use though….
not that its esp difficult
Tatsh, does do anything
bit’ how can we private?
heh no
CONFIG_NTFS_FS=m and CONFIG_NTFS_RW=y
:
why not?
dcoats, kernel ntfs is different
i have found my partitions go funny after a while
its not full write as you might understand from word
oh?
it cannot remove files afaik, only modify existing or like
it can
ntfs3g can
Hey, I think i may have gotten my grub config file wrong, can someone help me through what i need to do to make it work?
ah right thought thats what u meant
Tatsh, ooops does not do anything
do I need to be su ?
no i ment kernel support, which is different
what is CONFIG_NTFS_RW=y for then?
as processor family, in kernel, have I to set pentium M or core 2/xen? I’ve got a core 2 duo
dcoats, i never used it, but it shows there is some progress
i use core2/xen
dcoats, there is a help though …read it i think
check the description for CONFIG_NTFS_RW=y. it clearly says partial support, ie not full support for write.
plz i have no idea what that means
they show call it CONFIG_NTFS_Rand-a-littleW
-j1?
all i read about SIOCSIFFLAGS: I/O error seames to be a IRQ Problem
some ebuilds and some makefiles are written that way that, if thats what you are asking
Mibu-Kyoshiro: but it happened all of a sudden, what could have caused it? the emerge goind in the back?
make -j12098321093829
And the wifi worked for how long before?
Mibu-Kyoshiro: i get SIOC…. on ifconfig wlan0 up Mibu-Kyoshiro: about half an hour ago now
so basically it’s not a problem on my system neither a problem with the makefile not being able to read my gcc configuration?
someone fixed it by disabling pnp in the bios. maybe that helps you too.
say if i get my main inet connection is wireless but i wanted to network this computer so that i could use another computers bruner burner*
sorry, typo.
Hi! Can I run Gentoo 2007.0 LiveCD amd64 on a Mac?
http://www.lsi.com/documentation/networking/ethernet/et1310/DS06_153_ET1310_7-11-06FINAL.pdf - will someone write me a driver please?
Mibu-Kyoshiro: ok but does that nuke out ALL plug and play completely?
probably not
Mibu-Kyoshiro: cuz im not so onto that…the damn wifi worked not so long ago
use ppc
what kind of mac?
I’m having a problem setting up wireless with /etc/conf.d/wireless, it says my Atheros device (ath0), doesn’t support the the private ioctl “authmode=2″, and “setkey=xxxxxxx”, and a quick check with “sudo iwpriv ath0″ shows that it does I’m trying to connect to a WPA-PSK2 with AES router running OpenWRT
OctZ, Powerbook G4 (Asking in #gentoo-ppc)
/etc/conf.d/wireless is deprecated, but I don’t see why that wouldn’t work http://rafb.net/p/4YHh7u32.html
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=4&chap=4
dcoats, thanks, I will parse that oh, heh wrong config file I’ll fix it
i am having some network issues, i can’t even ping, but dhcp addresses are assigned, what could be the issus?
1 sorry
what ISP? :p
niadh, maybe you are just missing dns? check out /etc/resolv.conf
BT, using that linux 2.6 based router/hub thing
sounds medieval :p
Ok, what am i looking for in resolv.conf?
niadh, a line named “nameserver someip”
ieee80211 requires support for wireless LAN drivers (non-hamradio) & Wireless extension (CONFIG_NET_RADIO) ?
I have one line and that’s not it, so i think i found the first issue
any solutions?
Hey everybody, I use Squid 2.6.STABLE14 with AD authentication and all seems to work well for regular web traffic but whenever our users go to a site with streaming video or some HTTPS sites, they get an authentication box. However the authentication box doesn’t always work with typing the correct credentials. Any idea?
wireless
so what IP do i put in? I believe everything is assigned via dhcp, so i don’t think i am guarenteed for the ip to be the same
using 2.6.22-r5
wheres the best place to discuss device driver coding questions ?
in networking section, i only find wireless, not wireless and device drivers
hello again all
i have problem configuring Xorg
ehnvis so?
yeah so? go to /usr/src/linux and give make menuconfig. the two place i said above is in the menus. check em and setup if you have to
/etc/resolv.conf
5 here in the uk - exactly 12 hours later and i have a working GNOME Gentoo installed system thank you
thats a opendns server you can use temporarely
ehnvis I’m in the kernel menu
or longer but dunno about speeed
quick question though about emerge please
the second is actually under device drivers (from the main menu not inside networking)
i ran emerge -p -u -v world and it said there were loads of merges what exactly does it mean if things get merged
3\
is merge another word for update ?
applications that get installed
Pretoriab, its “emerge” and no
http://rafb.net/p/EKgmiY20.html - check the bottom… what to do?
so should i run emerge -u world ?
That has worked, thank you, may I ask what that did?
ehnvis maybe device drivers - network device support- wireless LAN ?
yes
i have a problem with the minimal-cd
hello guys
so, what have I to check?
yes, the longer you wait, the larger the update… updating your system is advised, for instance to stay secure (security updates are included in world updates)
wireless LAN (pre-802.11)
when i try to boot it, the minimal-cd says: reiserfs ext3 ext2 squashfs vfat iso 9660 udf xfs Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0)
how intelligetn is emerge when compared to ym or apt-get ?
wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11)
thanks SwifT
what did you check under the first menu? and what wlan device do you have?
ip …that most likely wont survive reboot though, look at /etc/conf.d/net
!!! Reason: Filesize does not match recorded size
or make your dhcp distribute it
tools are tools; emerge has nice features that ym or apt-get don’t have, but I wouldn’t call any tool “intelligent”
ehnvis don’t understand I can’t emerge ieee80211 drivers
i meant that it wont break other packages by installing a package
with that error so?
sure it will… but those breakages are all fixable
I’m sorry. found no really good solution. did you try disabling pnp in the bios?
ok, and in /etc/conf.d/net I am looking for? Ensuring there IS a dns server listed?
when i try to boot it, the minimal-cd, it says: reiserfs ext3 ext2 squashfs vfat iso 9660 udf xfs Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0)
by using revdep-rebuild SwifT ?
for instance, some library updates that are not compatible with previous versions and which cannot co-exist next to each other; emerge still allows it, but you’ll find information on how to fix the breakages easily for instance, yes
ok
depending on what wlan hardware you have you have to setup stuff in both menus.
so now fir a big question - how can i create a rescue dvd with my system on it ?
might the nodns option in the dhcp_eth0 line be the issue?
niadh, set a dns server (your isp’s most likely), look at net.example
an iso for instance ? mkisofs ?
niadh, indeed
when i try to boot the minimal-cd, it says: reiserfs ext3 ext2 squashfs vfat iso 9660 udf xfs Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0)
I’ve an intel integrated card
Gentoo uses catalyst to build its LiveCDs… you can use that tool to contain all the packages you have installed on your system so that a re-install is quickly and painless
So removing the nodns option and rebooting should solve everything?
niadh, remove that and restart /etc/init.d/net.yournick niadh, reboot? :p
it’s not a very intuitive tool though, you can’t use it without reading the documentation
i mean yournetwork nic
wicked thanks SwifT - is that available through emerge ?
of course
when i try to boot the minimal-cd, it says: reiserfs ext3 ext2 squashfs vfat iso 9660 udf xfs Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0)
renihs_:I know i could just restart the service, but i often do a full system reboot, just in case….
ieee 80211 has 2 different intel cards
niadh, thats totally pointless niadh, but if you feel better
I can’t verify the source but i heard some instances other than kernel upgrades where a reboot was required, again i could have been given false information
niadh, in case of a kernel upgrade thats different you can omit POST, with kexec or like but …yes you need to reload/reboot but not if you change network settings…
when i try to boot the minimal-cd, it says: reiserfs ext3 ext2 squashfs vfat iso 9660 udf xfs Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0)
der_papst_623, jmicron?
?
the controller for your cdrom
what means jmicron?
der_papst_623, it sounds like its unable to find itself
renihs_:Well it’s all working now, so thank you very much
and what shall i do? (1,0) is prim. slave, right? The CD is in Sec. Master
not sure if thats related, if its grub… der_papst_623, which livecd minimal i mean
the gentoo minimal-cd, 64bit
2007.0?
livecd-amd64-installer-2007.0.iso no, wrong install-amd64-minimal-2007.0.iso that is it
hmm if livecd doesnt boot, not much options are around ya hmm, i fear you will have to try with a different livecd, one that likes your controller/disks/cdrom doesnt need to be a gentoo as long as you can boot/mount fs, has to be 64bit though
normally i use the openSUSE Live-DVD but i can’t chroot a 64bit-System with a 32bit-Kernel
yar dont they have 64?
no
doesn’t ubuntu have a 64?
hmm dunno and this is gentoo Skunky
when upgrading from amd XP cpu to Intels core 2 duo, do I need to recompile my world?
and i can’t download hundreds of MBs on a limited Internet
he’s looking for a livecd that’ll boot his system.
you need too update your kernel for sure
w00ter, no thats amd64 amd xp oh
Yeah, but that’s the easy part renihs_ woops, LadyNikon I meant
w00ter, no you can stay on i686 but if you have lots memory then go amd64 and yes thats involves alot recompiling me is lazy and i use i686 on my core duo
hello
‘lo ken
how can i specify the partition with the cd myself?
der_papst_623, its seems to be unable to find the cd
yes, i know
hi
at a very early stage
has any1 had a problem with the live dvd install freezing during extraction
and how can i specify the path to the cd?
der_papst_623, is that grub or isolinux on the minimal? cant remember, if grub you see it specified by (cd) but if grub cant handle the controller it will fail to load the initrd also cds dont have partitions thats more a bios/controller problem afaik
What’s that controller?
how could this be?? this is a standart-computer with a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
And you can’t boot a gentoo dvd, right?
cd the minimal cd
PATA CD drive?
IDE
trying to connect to an ESSID with a - in it, gives an “unknown command” error… with gentoo normal wireless setup, not wpa_suppl any ways to avoid that?
it’s an IDE drive
hmm
WHen does the CD freeze der_papst_623 ?
der_papst_623, but the controller is ide too? which controller?
it don’t freeze i get a kernel panic
Tried booting with noapic acpi=off irq=poll ?
pietrek: reiserfs ext3 ext2 squashfs vfat iso 9660 udf xfs Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0) no, how can i choose that?
I see Do you remember what your root partition was? I mean /dev/hda1 hdb2, or something?
dammit wireless doesn’t work
pietrek, he doesnt get that far, livecd doesnt boot
So he has no linux right now, and he’s trying to install gentoo, right?
anyone configured a wireless integrated card (notebook) w/ gentoo?
right i have the gentoo on the hdd so far, that i can chroot it that was the end with my SUSE live-DVD cause it’s a 32bit-DVD
Tried any other “flavors” of gentoo dvds, like KoTD?
I got wireless part-way working now
der_papst_623, http://www.kernel-of-truth.net/downloads_kOT.html
but the wireless interface remains in scanning mode when I use wpa_supplicant
der_papst_623 unknown-block(1,0) == /dev/ram0 do you have an initrd file, do you have initrd support in your kernel
status
wpa_state=SCANNING
i have the original kernel… how should i change the kernel on a live-CD
der_papst_623, from where ?
I generated a PSK with wpa_passphrase I put it in the config file under my network
i have the image from gentoo.inode.at
der_papst_623, You are booting with a liveCD just now ?
grub seems to be unable to handle its controller or whatever thus failing to load initrd thats tricky to bypass
thats the problem, the live cd don’t boot
the ssid matches what I have in “sudo iwlist ath0 scanning”
der_papst_623, i am sure there is a 64bit knoppix if it works use http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/altinstall.xml erm wrong url
has anyone actually set up a Atheros card with wpa_supplicant successfully?
Guys, maybe a wrong placr to ask, but do you know a SIMPLE wikipedia-like php script?
der_papst_623 ah … ok. unknown-block(1,0) means there is a problem with the initrd, you can’t fix that. Try another liveCD. Anything that provides the tools to parition and use networking will do
der_papst_623, just find a 64bit and use normal gentoo handboook/install method
thats my problem… i have here a limited internet-acces
der_papst_623, i had the same problem once, rebuilding cd with isolinux as bootloader fixed it though
i have only that live-cd
but thats even more complicated i guess
http://rafb.net/p/dIqX8Y16.html
So let me get this straight, the amd 64 arch works with a core 2 duo?
I;d give that KoT a try
i re-emerged boost and gnutls - what can be the problem?
w00ter, ya intel basicly bought 64bit from amd
der_papst_623, there are several kernels on the CD. Have you tried them all? I suspect they will all have the same issue
there are 3
hmm never noticed
gentoo, gentoo-nofb and memtest86 …
if I enter a essid with dashes in it in /etc/conf.d/net i get: /etc/conf.d/net: line 12: key_essid-with-dash=42B8636F96: command not found
ah
what did I forget?
der_papst_623 mtest is not a kernel
i know gentoo-nofb brings the same error
But I won’t use more than 4 gb of mem, is there a lot of performance gain to be expected when switching from 32 bit to 64 bit then?
Riis its essid= no matter if the dashes are there or not
failed to load module “mouse” (module does not exist, 0)
w00ter, no
same for the mouse can x not start beasuce of mouse and kbd
w00ter, we are talking about a desktop?
I don’t understand?
yes
is there another livecd for 64bit without a desktop and other useless stuff?
yacyac, did you set INPUT_DEVICES=… in /etc/make.conf ?
Does apache 1.3 have support for SSLv3?
w00ter, you wont be able to measure it as mammal
nop i guess not
der_papst_623, yes … but it will have the same kernels
Well renihs_ that’s about good enough for me
that means, there is no way to solve??
NeddySeagoon what should i do
der_papst_623, maybe you bios has some different settings for the controller? dunno, that would be only chance at least with that grub/kernel whatever combo
der_papst_623, you do not need a Gentoo liveCD to install Gentoo - and CD that will boot can be used
my paoint being that it seems the gentoo network script can’t parse essids with - in them
but i can’t download here unlimited! it must be a CD
there is a package-cd or you take the dvd
yacyac set INPUT_DEVICES and VIDEO_CARDS now and emerge the drivers you need. http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml
i can’t download a DVD
get the instructions for networkless install.
to much transfer the package-cd have the same kernel, right?
nope no kernels on it at all only packages read the download-page - every download should be explained there.
and what helps me a cd full of packages??
how much time does it take to compile xorg ?
Riis for some reason, I though you said keys, not essid
you don’t need to download them anymore ^^
i need a live-cd to chroot a 64bit-system no packages
until it’s finished ^^ you don’t need a live-cd for a chroot.
but one should be able to use essid’s with dashes in them, no?
yacyac that depends on your hardware. You only need do the missing drivers
? tomboy64, why not?
because you can chroot from *any* running linux.
der_papst_623, any liveCD that boots …
no
tomboy64, he needs a 64bit
so i just need to do emerge xorg-x11 ?
der_papst_623 FC …
FC?
u sure?
der_papst_623 Fedora Core
can’t open /proc/acpi/event: Device or resource busy. Anyon know why, i think it might be to do with HAL.
tomboy64, erm yes? chroot from 32bit binary to 64bit binary?
okey
impressive
xD
renihs_ no, you can’t do that
NeddySeagoon, /irony off
Average merge time: 25 minutes and 13 seconds. - amd64, 2800+, 1gig ‘o ram
You must use a 64-bit kernel / install method to install a 64-bit system.
but i have ccache turned on
yacyac no, you only need the drivers …
is gentoo faster the foresight?
Wh don’t you just try that KoT I gave you a link to der_papst_623 ? It’s small, and should be enough to chroot, unless you need sth bigger…
No, Gentoo is more configurable.
how to configure ifplugd for eth0 ?
i added 2 lines in my make.conf file
wrrrr
ok
could u stop using this kot?
and i will need to “emerge xorg-x11″ ?
yacyac, emerge x11-drivers/xf86-input-mouse gets you mouse
what’s the right syntax?
How much difference will I see going from an Nvidia Geforce FX 5900XT to an nvidia GeForce 7800GS? Anyone know?
could someone have a look at this compile-failure of btg please: http://rafb.net/p/dIqX8Y16.html - i recompiled boost and gnutls - what is the problem?
roughly two to three times the performance I’d guess
yacyac, and emerge x11-drivers/xf86-input-keyboard gets you keyboard
i have a comparison page on that here: http://nvidiacards.zewb.ath.cx
i have a nvidia geforce 5200 card
ner0x, wait abit until the v90 is out, then fetch n90 or whatver
it compares the performance of most nvidia cards on an easy to read table
no thanks
the kernel of truth?
anyone using ifplugd?
yacyac, emerge x11-drivers/xf86-video-nv will get you started, when that works, try the binary blob
lol? why did you do that?
ok
do not look.
thanks
that link might cause your eyes to spontaneously start bleeding
OUCH!
how do i get the bootscreen from the livecd?
I just need a good AGP card.
oh, ok
thank god for firefox’s start new session thing
ner0x, dunno, might ask in #hardware or gentoo-chat :p but i wouldnt buy now
alot of difference actually
or if then a bigger jump
is this a version for me? amd64-r7.tar.bz2
Yup
since the 7800gs is already cheap, and not that bad for agp, it’s ok
ah, agp, true ya wont have much choice then :p
http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php - see there personally i wouldn’t run a card like that on agp, but… you might want to drop by ##hardware for questions like these tho - lots of people with good knowledge there (well, there was when i left, dunno how it is now)
yacyac, np
it worked thanks alot how do i change the screen resolution i think it is bigger and my moniter does not support that much so it is like getting extended
tomboy64, about that boost problem. Tried relaxing your LDFLAGS a bit?
i’ve set no ldflags on my server.
yacyac, that depends on the video driver you are using. It should pick the maximum your display supports, unless you have limited it
tomboy64, -Wl,–as-needed -Wl,-O1 in your make.conf?
yacyac, have you made a xorg.conf file yet ?
nop how do i make it i did
grrr just checked emerge –info - i DO have set that in my server’s make.conf
Xorg -configure
which ones would you recommend to remove? what shall i rebuild then? boost? or gnutls also?
yacyac, thats one way to make it. You will need to fine tune it by hand
I’d remove that –as-neede
and rebuild boost i guess?
I think yup
how do i fine tune it i think the driver is nv
Though I’m using them and my emerge -e world finishes fine, but it really can hurt some setups tomboy64.
anyone informed on this VFS error?
hardly encountered any problems with it. didn’t even know those ldflags were set there xD otherwise i’d have removed it earlier xD
sorry i dropped out earlier
I don’t have boost installed so this could be why my system is OK
http://rafb.net/p/LwVflr50.html
what is netmount for?
netinstall or net connect file sharing
i believe that the problem is somewhere on the bottom
mount network-filesystems like nfs, sshfs, and so on
which flag of php5 i must activate when i wanna use preg_match() functions?
linux file sharing?
yacyac, you edit it with nano
OK.. We just going our first big 10 phone, multi-location. VOIP job.. I want to have a mirrored raid array on the asterisk box, and my concern is that most of the motherboards we’ve been getting lately are windows based raid utilities (they were nvidia chipsets), which i’m sure wouldn’t work properly with linux can anyone reccomend a good board or chipset to look for that will work with linux?
i think, yeah]
no
Why wouldn’t you run that card?
usually mounts are done before network goes up
agp is dead
99.99% of on-board SATA “raid” are software raids.
aka crap
ah so this simply waits until say eth0 is up before mounting any netfs in fstab?
Either go SCSI, or get a separate card.
but networked filesystems (samba, nfs, sshfs etc) are only available AFTER the network has been started. and they *need* ‘net’ to work.
(And not all cards are hardware raid either.)
basically
Yeah, just don’t have the cash to switch over a board, processor, and GFX card.
karleeto, fakeraid, like nvidia works with dmraid in Linux
don’t bother with it then
karleeto, … but I would use kernel raid
most stuff is cpu limited under linux anyway, unless you stay with just fully native games
please just check the link out..
is that a software type raid powered by the kernel? or are you suggesting also that i get a raid card that is supported by the kernel?
Twey using IRC as root, is A Very Bad Thing
can’t i install gentoos bootscreen from livecd??
definitely upgrade that
karleeto, the kernel does the raid work in software. For raid1, the overhead is very low
raid1 is mirroring, i take it?
I’m on the install CD
linduxed, your link gives “not found”.
karleeto, yes
ok 8 *w8
so how does that work? do i install linux host on one drive first, then turn on raid1 in the kernel and it will mirror it, or what?
Twey thats probably ok … you won’t get too many root kits thin
you can enable raid from the livecd
Heh, I hope not
It’s for 3d modelling not for gaming.
ah
as long as you have a non-raid or raid1 boot partition you can have all the rest on any raid you want
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-tipsntricks.xml#software-raid
but it’s probably still cpu limited
well, i’m not using gentoo, lol, i use it for my personal machines, but on asterisk systems i use trixbox
wrong card for that kind of work tho
karleeto, you can do it that way if you want but I think the liveCD kernel supports kernel raid and provides mdadm, so you can install to raid
quadro’s are worth the effort
For AGP?
yeah
thoughts on LUM, did it go sour?
karleeto, DrEeevil raid1 /boot works
teach everyone topic
The main topic of #gentoo is _support_ for Gentoo Linux. If your question isn’t Gentoo-related, or if it’s Gentoo-related, but not support-related, ops may ask you to move the conversation to #gentoo-chat or another more appropriate channel.
shouldn’t make much difference
look around tho, with most cpus you can find pcie boards that let you keep the cpu and ram
I see one on NewEgg for $500 lol
http://rafb.net/p/fLrYxo49.html
usually when I upgrade the CPU I upgrade the mo/bo and RAM as well Usually I keep the gfx card, but its an AGP one, so next time I’ll have to buy a new one
linduxed, what do you get from modprobe nvidia?
ofcourse that’s the best way of doing it, but a cheap board with pcie can save alot when one wants a fast gpu that won’t be wasted for a while
Yeah. That leaves the CPU/RAM to be the bottleneck though
which is perfectly fine, as the alternative isn’t better
module not found
remerge nvidia-drivers linduxed
will try
heh, true enough.
there is a livecd-amd64-r7_2.6.20-patch.tar.bz2 in the archive - what shall i do with this file?
der_papst_623, ignore it, just burn the iso, boot and see what blows up
good
is anyone knowledgable about VFS errors
is there any reason for not taking a RW for this?
done, now what? depmod?
or can i use a CD-RW?
You can safely use rw depmod and modprobe linduxed I know this is not Gentoo related… but: http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesper/archive/2007/09/24/blue-screen-of-drm-death-or-the-death-of-windows-media-center.aspx
Hey, I”m having an issue w/ libtool… despite my /etc/make.conf settings of 686, this is the error line when emerging subversion:
done
usr/share/apr-0/build/libtool: line 6307: i386-pc-linux-gnu-ranlib: command not found
Start the X server now linduxed
will try to fire up startx after nvidia-xconfig
Sure
I’m unsure why libtool broke all of a sudden, any advice?
you changed chost?
is there any reason for not taking a CD-RW?
No CHOST=”i686-pc-linux-gnu”
der_papst_623, you can burn it on a cd-rw
good
That’s why I have no idea wtf happene.d
how do I tell portage to use different CFLAGS variables for a package?
has it always been like that?
Unless you wanna keep it forever/and/or just wanna waste a cd-r der_papst_623
usually you don’t
Yeah. Now, I’ve got a binhost setup at my house… I can’t check it’s make.conf as it’s down at the moment.
well here I need to, as a pakage is failing to compile, and I want to try it removing the -O2 option
But on the 2 boxes I’m having trouble w/ the CHOST is set the same.
hmm strange
Definitely. Is there a possiblity that the CHOST flag on the BINHOST might be set to 386 and the other machines just didn’t pay attention to that when emerging binary packages?
Gosh, I think something blew up and I killed linduxed
lol yes
Damnit.
if you take a package from an i386 binhost … it will be i386
Eagle_101 man portage tells you how but its well buried …
I really don’t think that’s the case tho, I copied the make.conf to each machine FROM that binhost.
mmm fun, I was hoping someone would know off hand.
well, you could try this: teach madsara chost
change chost: Changing your CHOST is possible, but discouraged. It is very easy to destroy your installation if you do not follow instructions very well. Please see http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/change-chost.xml if you will be doing this.
Can I prod the binary .tbz to determine it’s CHOST?
but I’ll go dig
madsara, your CHOST was i386, so its been changed sometime
can anyone recommned some good linux ebooks, im going on quite a long journey tommorow and i want something to read on the way
Nah, they’re all fresh installs
dive into python, advanced bash scripting guide
Eagle_101 portage allows you to set the environment for each package seperately, so that allows per package CFLAGS … there is a post on the forums, about 18 months old describing how
Bouncing strings off libtool-1.5.24.tbz2 indicates “-march=i686 -pipe”
ok, I’ll go look
thanks, I’ll check ‘em out : )
madsara .. i386-pc-linux-gnu-ranlib … shows the toolchain was made with CHOST set to i386… that means its not a 2007.0 install as that would use i486 worst case. Its set in the tarball. Do you still have your tarball in /
ok i got it working but i have another problem, i cant ctrl+alt+number - switch
Yeah, NeddySeagoon.
all i get is a black screen then
madsara whats its full name ?
How do you start your X linduxed ? GDM/KDM/XDM or via startx ?
libtool-1.5.24.tbz2
startx
madsara No, the stage 3 tarball you installed with
i first get an nvidia logo then the black x cursor
Ah, stage3-x86-2007.0.tar.bz2
gdm gives nothing….
Do you have an .xinitrc file?
there is your bug
yo , anyone have a git server ? I need help on sending mails when a git commit is done
I mean, have you chosen a graphocal environment to start after you type startx linduxed ?
Blah.
madsara, That has CHOST set to i486
i dont think so, i assumed i would at least get a welcoming xdm…
That sucks. I didn’t even think about it;
have KDE installed linduxed ? Or gnome, or whatever you intend to use linduxed ?
madsara how did you get that libtool-1.5.24.tbz2 ? Is that from another system ?
yes
Which one is it linduxed ?
madsara there is a stage 3 for i686 too
kde
Yeah, from a BINHOST that’s probably not built right.
.xinitrc
so it seems linux doosn’t restart when i press the restart button on my computer…..been like this through several updates….so my suspision is I mangled a config file somwhere one late night….so any ideas what could be the problem?
auto-bounce
Then use startx
as root?
No, use your account for that
yes
madsara, it sounds like the BINHOST does not match your install. If you want a i686 install, use the stage3-i686-2007.0.tar.bz2 file
That sucks. Well, that got to the bottom of everything Yep.
would replacing _all_ packages with stuff from the binhost help?
DrEeevil, yes, as long as you fix CHOST too but it sounds like the BINHOST has its CHOST set to i386… Better pick things from tinderbox
lucky me, I have binpkgs
DrEeevil, I keep binpkgs too
I passed 7000 today
DrEeevil, I have 4 years of sources and 3.5 years of binpkgs … my 60G /usr is almost full
I have 96h of compiling
That is the saddest e-penis exchange I’ve ever seen. Ooops, I said that out loud
what!
blasphemer!
Speaking of full partitions, is there any safe-but-efficient way of cleanig the old-n-dusty stuff from Gentoo?
now my gcc fails with “can’t create executables”! (
eclean I think manages distfiles cleanup
pietrek, there are several cruft removal scripts
We were all thinking it
Get rid of all those LDFLAGS, just comment ‘em out, maybe you left a space somewhere tomboy64
I was off-topic and inappropriate.
i happen to have only one xinitrc in the entire system, /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
Heh
i hope thats the one
cruxeternus I can’t be bothered opping for the /kick
linduxed, you should crate a new, completely different .xinitrc file in your home dir.
.xinitrc linduxed
from the forum post that I see, this is not yet in portage? http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-280748-highlight-portage+cflags+separately.html
doing now
cruxeternus, we run gentoo, e-penis is the MAIN topic
From your account and in your home dir of course linduxed.
It’s against channel policy.
PG-13 language!
sarcasm .
lol pg-13? DrEeevil is quite a comedian today, dammit xD
Where in KDE can I view all the information about my computer hardware?
for what good reason is sys-auth/pam_bioapi hard masked? why am I being forced to use thinkfinger ?
ner0x, sysinfo:/
lspci ? oh kde
kinfocenter
ok and now what?
ner0x, not sure about kde, but there is dmidecode (if x86) and lshw
startx?
Yup
Eagle_101 Most of that is in now … you need /etc/portage/bashrc
Pentium 4 3.2 GHz is what socket type? Do they make a PCI-E 16x board that supports it?
that’s a socket 775 I think, not sure how many pci-e boards exist for it
Socket 478.
oh yes
hmm … I get confused by the constant changes
so is there information on how to use that information? err those settings?
Eagle_101 Its a place to put bash scripts, so you can do anything that emerge does
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138079
Neddy, yeah.. with your help I’ve gotten to the bottom of it.
madsara, no problem
I just bought a AGP card when I could have purchased a board and new PCI-E card that’s less expensive and faster…
had to reboot
How is it now?
any idea why i cant access other desktops after getting x up?
does linux have much support for tablet pcs? im considering buying a new laptop
kde worked
The issue is on the laptop only, my issue on the desktop was completely different. The laptop was rebuilt this past Saturday, using the wrong stage3 tarball. The binary libtools was used by the desktop (it’s fine), but the laptop compiled it’s own libtool - which is where the problem was. (It had the wrong profile as you mentioned.
linduxed, lemme check my bash history
madsara, yes. CHOST is hard coded into much of the toolchain
As I learned, the hard way.
/usr/share/X11/xkb/compiled linduxed ?
could someone help me out, i was setting up my system to dual boot and now when i load grub it stops loading at stage2 how can i fix this?
yeah, only a readme in there
Do you have Option “XkbLayout” thing in your xorg.conf linduxed ?
yupp and its correctly set to se
could someone help me out, i was setting up my system to dual boot and now when i load grub it stops loading at stage2 how can i fix this?
linduxed, you press ctrl+alt+f1 and nothing happens, right?
what has that got to do with the black screens?
Oh!
setup grub right
I get it now! You press ctrl+alt+f1 for example, and the screen turns black, yes linduxed ?
well, something does happen, the screen dies until i switch back to the x-desktop (f7)
sounds like you’ve got the hard drives reversed
3 sorry http://rafb.net/p/xHTTqo61.html can work that out and i really need it
is there a way i can tell apache to ward off crawlers?
*can’t
linduxed, tried emerging kdnssd ?
try asking #gentoo-apache and #apache too, but generally it’s going to be the use of a robots.txt file
you outta clues on that scree thing? it works the same when using the live-disk
Hmmm… I might have an idea actually linduxed So the same thing happens whan you boot directly from live-cd, yes? if so then it means that it has nothing to do with nvidia-driver bug, ’cause there’s no nvidia driver on the livecd This could mean that you may be having an issue with framebuffer support thingie, could you please post you /boot/grub/menu.lst somewhere?
so to fix grub grub i have to start livecd?? can i use my linux distro i have on my thumbdrive?
yes
ive just setup xorg on my thinkpad t20 laptop (using the savage driver), ive set my modes to 1024×768, and set default depth to 24. But my screen looks very very choppy (doesnt seem to be any anti-aliasing) how can i fix this?
how do i install the gentoo bootsplash from the livecd?
hi, i have a problem with running revdep-rebuild command, when i run it i get this in console http://rafb.net/p/RkYUcH24.html i am unable to boot the system, i get the same messages
bashFish, theres a package for it
boar, http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-452643-highlight-svcdir.html
thats, will try it oops thanks, will try it
Vinky, do you know which one? is it “bootsplash-themes”?
removing all ld-flags solved my problems.
bashFish, splash-themes-livecd maybe
thx for the hint
hello guys.. i’m trying to use emacs with sml-mode.. i have emerged both emacs and app-emacs/sml-mode, but when i try to run it, it just says “no match”.. anyboy know anyting about this?
tomboy64, you must’ve had a space or some other strange character somewhere I think, I use Wl,-O1 and my stsem;’s fine, but anyway I’m glad it’s OK now
mhmm … i doubt that, cause other things compiled fine. anyway, glad of having gotten rid of it
allright thanks!
So boost was the only package complaining about gcc unable to create execs? tomboy64
nope, btg was.
is there an easy to get to get a list of all packages that emerge is currently compliing? (I know genlop/qlop -c show the current package)
boost re-compiled fine without ld-flags
Hmmm… I don’t have btg either
is mozplugger the “state of the art” for using evince in firefox? The gentoo ebuild is over two years old, but I used the current version and it seems to work fine.
someone know about audio player that let me choose the encode ( for non - english mp3 files ) ?
lnx_, character encoding is usually determined by your locale.
Draconx|Laptop , yes but there are also plater that let you choose , have name of player like this ?
lnx_, er, you choose by selecting an appropriate locale. lnx_, that is the whole *point* of locales - to let you choose.
what would i put in grub to boot the 4th partition on my drive hd0,4?
count from zero.
Draconx|Laptop , this is not what im looking for , in amarok 1.3 i can choose the encode but in 1.4 i cant , so i search aplayer that let me choose like amarok 1.3
so it would be 3? hd0,3 ok going to try bb
oh joy! I can’t update xorg-server cause it requires nvidia binary version 100.xx+ and I can’t update nvidia binary past 96.xx because it drops support for my video card after 9.7!
you have to wait for nvidia to update your legacy driver
YeTr2_, http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=99186
Hi! I can’t compile librsvg. See build log: http://rejeep.se/build.log
rejeep, is cairo lib installed? if not, emerge cairo
is there something i need to do special to make grub boot ntfs partition i put hd0,3 and it doesnt do anything except return to menu
LoZ1987, Yepp it is!
how about libsvg-cairo?
acid, you might have to use rootnoverify… I don’t use NTFS.
does ext3 have a limit on the number of files in a directory or the filesystem?
acid, and I presume you used (hd0,3) CharlieSu, yes.
oh yea.. i remember now thanks
LoZ1987, Nope!
maybe try that but re-emerge cairo first emerge –oneshot -N cairo
emerge -1 cairo libsvg-cairo
no just emerge -1 -N cairo; emerge -v libsvg-cairo
so then, http://pastebin.com/ma6ac8ff will be fixed when they release a new 96.xx ?
LoZ1987, And then librsvg again?
yup
n0kia, pietrek ^
Yup it will YeTr2_ They already have relaeased it, it just takes a while to get into portage YeTr2_
rejeep, might also want to rebuild libgdk
/etc/portage/package.keywords && emerge -av nvidia-drivers
I can’t unmask nvidia-drivers, they dropped support for geforce 3&4 in anything about 97.xx
yep ok
YeTr2_, try the legacy driver then.
LoZ1987, Cant find libgdk. librsvg failes again: http://rejeep.se/build.log
there _is_ no legacy driver anymore
1 sec rejeep
LoZ1987, Np!
if I want to use the alsa-driver I need to remove it from being built into my kernel?
do you know what it is?
Whatever they call it… How about this one: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=99185 YeTr2_ ?
and it looks like this is only occuring because I have VIDEO_CARDS=”nvidia”, and the ebuild has this line video_cards_nvidia? ( =x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-100.14.19 )
rejeep, does revdep-rebuild -p want to reinstall anything?
I think you’ll be able to do emerge ==x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-71.86 once they get into portage YeTr2_,
what is the best way to emerge updat my system ?
75.x+ dropped geforce2 and below, 97.xx dropped geforce 3&4… 9x.xx drivers support 3d accelerated desktops like beryl and compiz. why do I want to roll back to an outdated driver of 74.xx that won’t support 3d accelerated desktops?
world
my work machine is emerging many packages. via ssh, ‘genlop/qlop -c’ shows me current compile status and ‘merging n of nn’; is there any way to see the rest of the list?
blokkie, what do you mean?
LoZ1987, Checking…
pietrek:
0 timed out. That isnt the mac of the access point, but when attempting to connect it does output the correct
emerge –sync && emerge -uDNa world && revdep-rebuild
like .. update my entire sytem , server
What’s your card again YeTr2_ ?
LoZ1987, Nope!
rejeep, libgdk belongs to gtk, so if revdep rebuild finds nothing, reemerge gtk+ with emerge -1 -N gtk+
geforce4 ti4600
blokkie, you’re wanting a command to do it?
wait, geforce4 mx440
then try librsvg again
awww, noobies are so cute
yes , and that it shows whats it updating
emerge –sync && emerge -uDNa world && revdep-rebuild
LoZ1987, Sure
blokkie, what dcoats said - but I like throwing in the “v” switch too so i do emerge -DuavN world instead
but that doesnt show me whats updated , and does not ask me if it should do it
yes it does
yes, I am running beryl right now through the nvidia interface provided by the 96.36 nvidia drivers on a geforce4 mx440..
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/96.43.01/README/appendix-a.html I see an MX440 there mate
that’s not in portage, and there is a line in the xorg ebuild that causes it to break because I have VIDEO_CARDS=”nvidia” set in my make.conf for other applications that use nvidia, as well as xorg. VIDEO_CARDS=”nvidia” in make.conf makes xorg-server require nvidia binaries of atleast..
blokkie, if you run what dcoats told you at first, then you’ll see the portage tree sync before the actual package updates
Aw0L thx !
100.14.19
hello everyone
I like to keep my stuff to portage only if possible.
I get it… Are you sure that it requires this exact version YeTr2_ ?
why doesn’t openoffice come with a dictionary installed/enabled by default?
cause they want you to google it?
nvidia binary 97.xx dropped support for geforce3&4… they never added support for those cards back in since. I cannot update past 96.xx xorg-server is requireing that I update to =100.14.19 because of VIDEO_CARDS=”nvidia” set in make.conf
I emerged openoffice-bin (2.3.0) but I find that it has no dictionary…
i would check their site to see if they have any dictionary plugins
I have VIDEO_CARDS=”nvidia” because other applications still use that flag, like mplayer, and they still accept the older binaries
I have googled it, newer versions of OOo are supposed to come with a built-in dictionary, and support for installing a dictionary from an external source has been deprecated. The last release of the external dictionary was in 2002
anyone know if I need to remove alsa from being built into my kernel in order to use the alsa-drivers or is it possible to use the one that’s in the kernel to configure my soundcard?
gentoo is about choices… try to merge myspell-your-langs
I was wondering if someone can help me use ’scp’
what’s your problem?
YeTr2_, 96.43 supports MX440 mate, I’m sure the devs will fix the ebuild so you can install it and use.
it’s quite easy, what do you need help with?
I can’t get it to work, I think I have the syntax wrong
I’m stuck installing grub
rejeep, any luck?
what are you trying to do?
I know that any version of 96.xx will support geforce3&4. I’m griping because the xorg-server is going to screw me over for not still allowing nvidia specific stuff because I can’t keep up with the recent nvidia drivers.
LoZ1987, Compiling… I had by mistake removed the X USE flag for cairo. Maybe that was it…
I can get on the server with ssh by ’ssh me@quest.scs.carleton.com’
i get a message letting me know that the stage1 file has not been found
i always fail to set up my wlan .. lshw shows me this: http://nopaste.info/20b53f414f.html does it mean i missed to enable sth in kernel? do i need pciexpress support or sth like that?
rejeep, could be. but if that is the case, you need to rebuild cairo, libsvg-cairo and gtk+
I wanna compy a file off that server
then emerge librsvg
Why does xorg-server have to require atleast 100.xx?
LoZ1987, Ok! Any specific order?
just like that
I think it’ll be fixed once that 96.43 gets into portage YeTr2_ It has to be
Ok
bbiab
Compiling… =( I mean:
you want “me@quest.scs.carleton.com:/path/to/file /path/on/local/machine”
Is my beryl going to still work if xorg-server doesn’t know anything about the nvidia 3d acceleration interface that I use. that’s my main issue.
k imma try again
Checking if “/boot/grub/stage1″ exists… no Checking if “/grub/stage1″ exists… no File not found does anybody have any ideas?
post your grub.conf to a pastebin
YeTr2_, The only thing to get beryl running is a properly installed nvidia driver with tfp support I think, so you should be fine as long as you have the right driver for your card.
OctZ, #pastebin
hello all
yay
is there a gui for emerge ?
pretoriab, why would you want a gui for emerge?
pretoriab, there are a few
pretoriab several, porthole is one
kuroo
portato etc
kuroo is a gui 4 emerge
then how do I get xorg-xserver to not spazz out when I still leave VIDEO_CARDS=”nvidia” for my other apps that still use them?
pretoriab, you’d be better of using emerge from the command line
ok just to see what packages are available
I’ve never used a gui for it, but I hear they are lacking…
holy HECK, 963 users. wow.
hi
/etc/portage/packages.video_cards ?
i’ve hot a question:
Aw0L, i used to use kuroo, it’s quite fast for searching..
What you mean is that xorg will always try to instal lthe latest and newest driver automatically YeTr2_ ?
- and you can also check out packages.gentoo.org
i’d like to make an abuild
wisp, faster than cli?
thanks Aw0L
how do I check what does a package depnd on?
Aw0L, yes
I have used ldd
is there a way to delete files that only have creatin size of bytes
I am on Gentoo by the way !
yep, and it’ll die because I’ve masked 97.xx and up
Aw0L, at least -S
=x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-1.0.9700
I know what packages provide the stuff the binary is linked against
/etc/portage/package.mask ^
Aw0L, I would always emerge in the console though..
Question, I’m installing drivers for an ATI card in my laptop. However, when I try to run the ati install script I get these errors: http://pastebin.ca/717790 Am I missing some module sources that I can retrive over emerge?
or should I just start masking xorg-server?
is sys-apps/net-tools a necessary package? because its causing my emerge world to fail
Hmm it should be fine I think, that 96.43 driver is below 9700 so it’ll be emerged, the only thing that’s needed is a fixed xorg ebuild so it doean’t require 100 series driver.
ah nvm its necessary
hola
is there anyway to delete multiple files that have certain amount of size like 14 bytes ?
only if you want network to work:P
lol net-tools is failing while trying to compile because it cant load libexpat.so.0
teach fiendskull9 about expat
expat-2.0.1 is not ABI compatible with earlier versions. Run the following in bash to fix: “emerge -n1 ‘=portage-2.1.2.12′ portage-utils && emerge -qep world | grep –color=never -oFf (scanelf -plRBF ‘%F %n’ | awk ‘/libexpat.so.0/{print $1}’ | xargs qfile -qC | sort -u; echo -e “libtool\ncurl”) | xargs emerge -1″. If a specific package fails, “/msg mzbot faq remerge-deep” for advice (gtk+/pango are common).
hi, I’m having problems with cups failing to parse ppds.
hexoroid, find -size 14B
find . -size 14c -exec rm {} \; # TEST THIS FIRST
It’s been happening for a while and I finally need to get around to fixing it. Cleaning out cups and updating to 1.2.12 earlier today has not helped
rickest thanks let me try
alsasound is running but I’m not hearing anything 8 (
Yay that mzbot thing seems to be a real; smartass, especially when you type teach
rickest whats c for ?
‘man find’ then press /-size
any thoughts or places to look?
Hi, i did lasts updates of ~x86 and i lost the win key (Mod4 with fluxbox) Do you know how i can fix it ?
Hello! I have just upgraded something (whihc changed in the last 24hours (since i emerge world often)) in relation with xorg and my keyboard and had 129 files in /etc to check so I said “merge all”; But now, my keyboard (under xorg 7.3) is totaly different and actually, f*cked up in the since that the shift key doesn’t do anything anymore, nor does ctrl=alt=f* (i;e; can’t go back to tty*!); any idea on how i can get my freaking keyboard layout back to normal,
you need to downgrade your xorg-server and xkeyboard-config
rickest thanks is there anyway to round it up to only kilobytes like 142k
or wait until a fixed versions come out it’s broken upstream for everybody, even BSD
Wait a sec n0x
okay (i’ll wait before i start anything )
ln -s /var/lib/xkb/ /usr/share/X11/xkb/compiled
Hi guys, where can I see cron’s log files?
Check if you have that /usr/share/X11/xkb/compiled dir
when starting kuser as user it just complains it can’t open /etc/passwd and offers no solution
http://gaffie.co.uk/techblog/cant-switch-between-terminals.html
Wow - quiet tonight!
Ivan, did you look in /var/log/?
ok thanks pietrek , i’ll try that
wow, i just accidentally ssh’ed through an ssh
n0x, he did something a bit different, but it gave me an ide about that ln -s and it worked just fine.
Ivan, I think it depends on your logger - metalog should stick it in /var/log
Yeah, but there’s no cron logs.
find . -type d -size -10k will find every file less than 10k er, -type f
pietrek, ok, did that, ‘ill restart x and let you know otherwise, i’ll try the perso “full” technique Haha! Thanks a lot pietrek ! It works great
That’s nice
add -ok to make ‘find’ ask you before actually doing the delete; i.e., find . -type f -size -40k -ok rm {} \;
heck ya that’s nice! =D
Guys I’ve been having trouble with Grub :- http://gentoo.pastebin.ca/717805
can anyone recommend a 3d graphing program that’s in portage?
degreseven, try Blender
The funny thing n0x is that it only happens (at least to me) when X is started via a display manager, it’s fine when you use startx…
n0x, thought that was a modeling program
once emerge is running, is there any way to find out from another terminal the names of all packages being emerged?
Watching current merge progress.
degreseven, yes it is, sorry about that… Blender is in some sense, comparable with Maya, but has nothing to do with Solid Works. pietrek, I actually didn’t try “startx”, I just tried though Entrance and realized it… =/ But now it works thanks to you!
n0x but you can input like… equations?
#gentoo Where can I get gentoo kernels headers and sources?
gentoo.org
degreseven, no, I don’t think so.
pietrek, why ln -s /var/lib/xkb/ /usr/share/X11/xkb/compiled fixes xorg keyboards problemes ?
