I’ve never heard that one…
It really is one of the most useful mindless aphorisms I know … You can apply it to pretty much any situation.
never say never - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA_Chicken_Gun
airlines and train companies use that the english complained once that there chickens kept smashing their train windows, they later realised they were supposed to defrost them
myth, destroyed on snopes and on that link.
xingu, I have a friend who used to do same job as Robbie. I’ll have to ask him about that. xingu, and anyway, I don’t think that counts as ‘flying’
uhmh my debian is broken
gynterk, the good news is … you get to keep all the pieces. gynterk, more than just the printer?
mc got graphical errors sec i’ll post screenshot
need help
its as close as a chicken will get
http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/6302/puttymcgy3.jpg
in /var/www, i dont have a index file,but in /var/www/html,but how come its accessable by http://myip/index.html ?
i’m using putty & winxp
liable, I’ve seen a chicken fly. Normally they clip their wings
http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/2371/puttymc2ll4.jpg theres another one
its the default apache one?
liable, i think so
bah, i knew you were going to say that so whats the problem?
I used to raise them, it’s more of a manic hover than flight
default redirect .. check your config
any ideas about those graphical errors ?
they sure as shit can’t soar
xingu, conceeded
oh,found it DocumentRoot “/var/www/html” in httpd.conf
gynterk, I don’t use mc, so I’m not sure what I’m looking at.
http://files.opensuse.org/opensuse/en/thumb/2/2f/Midnight-commander-file-browser.png/700px-Midnight-commander-file-browser.png it should look like this
strange,i canot make it work
restarted apache? also check sites-enabled default
in the main httpd.conf,i have just changed DocumentRoot to “/var/www/mrtg” in physically, there are many index.html file in /var/www/mrtg but from web, nothing has changed
you use firefox? shift+f5
gynterk, yes,restarted
apache 1 or 2?
apache 1
i think that ricardo guy finally got fixed up
ah, cool
i thnik
but also check sites-avaiable/default maybe it over-runs doc root
apache 1 doesnt have sites available
ah yes ofc
gynterk, OOMD. Sorry.
default redirect .. check your config
i use cherokee
check your apache log, if you have the document root set correctly, then it should say why its redirecting
let me check strange it says File does n /var/www/html/mrtg/index.htm in httpd.conf, it is set DocumentRoot “/var/www/mrtg”
yes, but do you have an index.htm ?
liable, you still dont get me i do not have /var/www/html/mrtg the mrtg is under /var/www so i set it up in httpd.conf
oh, yes, i did miss that
but apache says it doesnt find /var/www/html/mrgt..hmmm how strange, any idea ?
what happens when you visit /mrtg
paste your conf file
where does it go ?
abrotman, the mrgt folder is located in /var/www/
did you fix the default redirect yet ?
but apaches tries to find it /var/www/html/mrgt
paste your conf file
abrotman, i dont find that thing in httpd.conf
/etc/apache2/sites-available/default
apache1
abrotman, i use apache1
still might be such a setting look in your apache log to see what it’s trying to do
can somebody help me, my dvdrom periodically keeps freezing the system for 2 seconds. the error logs: http://paste.lisp.org/display/47092
Hello. I need to edit a ps/pdf file. I want to replace images, crop the size and remove elements. What tool is available in Debian Etch for this tasks?
try adding DMA to the drive .. or it’s dying
it worked perfectly under windows dma was on by default, and it turned off, according to the log
use windows then
mt box worked perfectly untill it died as well
hehe
yeah, the kernel does that when it detects it has problems accessing the drive via DMA. but that may have a multitude of causes
seriously… you do have that choice
you could work around it turning DMA off for the drive in the first place or does it still get stuck when DMA is off?
DMA disabled , so it’s disabled now and still
maybe you should consider testing the drive to see if it is in fact failing… in addition, now might be a REALLY REALLY good time to back up before you cannot.
and your board has more than 2 ide connectors? or is it a pci card controller your cdrom is connected to? in the latter case, i would check if the controller is recognized and utilized correctly
the board has 1 ide connector, with a HDD and dvd-rw connected
wait, this is for a cdrom drive??
the problematic drive is a dvd-rom, yes
hmm, i wonder why it got assigned to hde then and not to hdb
not a hdd
oh, then backing up is probably not necessary… but when is the feeling you’re fully backed up not a good one?
there is also a sata HDD attached, as sda. the cdrom was hda earlier, with a sysrescuecd
well, hda or hdb sounds more correct for a system that has only 1 ide connector … but it may be just me
geo-rge: if you’re feeling fully backed up, you probably need more fibre in your diet
i m not sure if mrtg is working http://www.my-ehome.net/mrtg/
yes, I don’t know why aren’t they hda and hdb, they are hde and hdf…
right, and if that’s the case the driver is altered or malfunctioning but would dmesg answer the question of why hde was used?
hmm why it still says configure /etc/snmp/snmpd.local.conf ?
the letter doesn’t matter in the slightest
can the driver assign a different letter like that?
yes, i know, but it doesn’t feel normal. i’m used to enumeration starting at hda
Unknown model for AD1988, trying auto-probe from BIOS…
could be the controller scan order ?
did the letter somehow get separated from the actual device? so if you have hde, would the other drive be hdf?
leaving out hda/b/c/d completely? hmm … maybe it’s rather due to udev
hdf is the HDD where linux is
it really doesn’t matter WRT his issue
yes, there is no hda/b/c/d
and if any of this is the case, would that mean the ide was somehow set that way in the bios (by its port addr and irq maybe)?
okay, i hope you’re right
device.map may shed some light, or blame udev, but it doesnt change the fact its a drive/driver issue
now i do ifconfig -a,there is new device named 7922 ,hmmm
if I boot with sysrescuecd, they are hda/b
isn’t that a bad thing if you were to try to boot? are there operating systems on f/b?
the only other thing is a sata HDD, sda
hi
JMB361 Bus-Master DMA disabled (BIOS) - but I didn’t disable anything in bios
maybe you should check to see if it’s disabled what happened to me recently is my bios battery decided to stop holding a charge
ok i’ll check the bios.
maybe you’ll find nothing wrong… but at least you will have ruled it out
(046d:08ce) but isnt it suppose to create a device too? like /dev/video0 ?
thanks for the help, later
where does debian etch store the configuration for kdm
/etc/kdm/ ?
is there some utility to allow wifi network setup/switching with a gui?
~/ folder, as well.
found /etc/kde3/kdm
geo-rge: that’s just silly! for kdm ?
Never mind… Lapsus mentis
tardus!
dr who?
that “Tardis”
college football sucks
I have this ugly noise in all my microphone recordings ( rec -c2 -r 44100 -s w test.wav ): http://mipropioupload.googlepages.com/test.wav
you should put it in the /topic
that’s your voice! just kidding (
i tried … says i can’t change it
geo-rge: i didn’t put it for avoiding that
bugger
machine noise likely
what do you mean ugly noise
yes
i used to do recording on a Dual CPU with huge fans .. got all kinds of internal noise
does it sound like your voice only like a kazoo?
the same with voices but normal output, to master, without recording, sounds fine.
right .. because it’s not recording
yes, when recorded, I am a robot
mr roboto!
so is there no solution? just another hardware?
do you have another mic or sound card to try? or can you maybe move the sound card slot ?
Probably it even sounds the same if i plug another card.
I use a breakout box with two pro mic preamps
yes, i have. some old ones
try another sound card and/or mic
The same happens with voip, everybody says that they hear me too low
then raise the pitch of your voice
I tried two different mics, but the same with both
not loud enough you mean?
geo-rge: yes, with voip my voice is not enough loud
and the mic level is all the way up ?
And sometimes, very rare ones, like a robot for a second yes, i got crazy changing levels and capture source searching for the problem
crazy!
how do I get thunderbird 2 for etch?
Also tried turning off pcm or master for not feeding bask back*
does anyone know,in mrtg.cfg, can we specify more than one WorkDir for mrtg to monitor ? i would like it to monitor my clients’ sites
just aptitude install thunderbird
maybe you have to have separate instances
although it’s now icedove, so it’ll install that instead
geo-rge, for me ?
it’s version 1.5
I ran mrtg once before
it’s called icedove
cool, thanks
!info icedove etch
(free/unbranded thunderbird mail client), section mail, is optional. Version: 1.5.0.12.dfsg1-0etch1 (etch), Packaged size: 10621 kB, Installed size: 30716 kB
oh .. i guess it is 1.5
hi.. i’m trying to setup ata over ethernet on a couple of debian servers.. it seems that vblade does not work with vlan interfaces.. tried to google, but found nothing.. is it known limitation or am i doing something wrong?
Why do you want ata over ethernet?
because i have two drives in two servers (total 4 drives) that are in raid5.. i need to mount them on a third machine..
hm.. it’s so quiete.
*BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURP* better ?
net-snmp == libnet-snmp-perl ?
no, the latter are the perl bindings
okay hi asg
hi Noborusan
hi debian folks! i have debian sarge on a vserver, and syslog somewhen stopped working some months ago. (i run a default installation with no services at all) i looked around and did not found /sbin/syslogd nor /etc/init.d/syslogd .. could these box being hacked??
asg, may i ask, in mrgt, can i have more than WorkDir so that it will monitor different virtualmatchine ? asg, in my system, each virtual host client is put in /home/name
..or is there some packed to (re)install syslogd ?
I’m not sure offhand, I’ve moved to using rrdtool and custom scripts as well as munin and cacti in recent years.
who can help me? I’m recompile a source , the compiler say: “cannot find -lz”. but I have installed the zlibc
package i mean
do you have the -dev package for the lib?
asg, okay
i.e., zlib1g-dev
asg:what’s package name? than you.
I expect you could run multiple configs and run separate instances of mrtg though
asg:Let me try it.
asg, huh,be more specific please ?
it’s exactly as I suggested about a half hour ago… run more than one mrtg, one per dir
multiple cron jobs, multiple mrtg.cfg files to do what you need. geo-rge: sorry, didn’t see your previous suggestion
hmmm
asg/Noborusan: no worries
geo-rge, ?
I have compiled kernel and then I have made initrd image using mkinitramfs -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.18.1 2.6.18.1 and now I am booting in to that kernel but I got acpi_low_level_read kernel panic attempted to kill init
put specific, informative, concise, complete question before “?” please
a usb drive with the fat32 filesystem was removed without unmounting and now the fat is corrupt so no data is showing… any suggestions?
for example, you have /etc/mrtg.cfg that is driven by /etc/cron.d/mrtg. You could create /etc/mrtg2.cfg with your new config and add an almost identical line in /etc/cron.d/mrtg to use the new /etc/mrtg2.cfg
it’s like in person, when you give me a certain look I’m supposed to interpret it exactly (like one girl reads another’s face)
asg, remarkable ! Thanks ,let me try
there are these 20 movies that describe ideas like this…
don’t do that again i think there are some vfat rescue tools in debian
!bugzilla i need to find if there is a problem…what is debian bugzilla site to find a bug and maybe a fix btw morning all
bugs.debian.org
thnx
THE BLOOP WILL GET YOU
see reruns of “Lost in Space” to find out what a bloop is
geo-rge: I know about Betty Bloop!
no, that’s bletty boop
betty boob?
effectively, yew s
okay
can someone help me find a bug report that most likely got fixed with a driver module patch? i have found info in google about it but i cant find it in bugzilla…any how the message i get when i boot with this lan card in (digital 21041-pb) = set link 10baseT auto
were you not just told where the debian bug tracking system is?
and did you not just read that i tried
cananyone tell me what should I for that kernel panic
it’s not bugzilla ..
well bugs.debian.org i went too i just called it bugzilla
please don’t what’s wrong with your message ?
so the answer to your original question is “no, not right now, maybe later”
abortman cause it keeps going off the hook every 2secs
oh
i dont have X running so i see this message in console all the time
tried another cable ?
i have to ifcondig eth2 down
ohh, so this is about -your- system I didn’t realize that
thats without a cable even in it this is about other peoples system with that same nic
what’s the actual text ?
google “set link 10baseT auto” # set link 10baseT auto # mode 0×7ffc0000, sia 0×10c4,0xffffef01,0xffffffff,0xffff0008 # sorry copied that from pastebin
so where’s the pastebin ?
let me paste the link http://pastebin.ca/677077 = a config from the other day…i dont have the nic in right now but i can put it back in
thereyago that would be the point of asking people to use pastebins
geo-rge negative person this morning are we?
why are you even using a DEC card ? they’re like 10-15 years old i’ve got a stack in my office
not at all… I’m actually congratulating you for getting the point
i know its pretty old but secure linux web hosting usually works great with old stuff
that is true
i dont want to go buy another nic if i can get this one to work
they worked very well with kernel2.4 .. i replaced them all when 2.6 came along .. they stopped working as well
hi how can i convert autopackage to debian package?
from what i found on the net there is a kernel module patch that fixes it…but when i try to find the actual patch i cant
drive it into dpkg?
perhaps it’s already been applied look at the driver options modinfo tulip will show you some
the info i read was from 2005 and 2006 so i would prob bet yes but wanted to make sure
these are tulip cards?
geo-rge: yes
hmm, tulip used to be da shit
well i keep getting that message repeating every 2 secs in console so i have to ‘ifconfig eth2 down’
can you tell me what should I do for that acpi_low_level_read kernel panic attempted to kill init? I have compiled kernel 2.6.18.1
can i still do those things you said after that and it will work ok?
why did you compile it ? you can try ..
tulip is actually loaded for 2 lne100tx i have in the machine
you can’t
I have to apply a patch on it so
oh
hmmm
maybe there is a conflict cause tulip is running on 2 other nics also
why not use the debian source ?
trying to install app it says needs qt, which package name apt-cache search qt returns a bunch of files
so you’re using the same driver successfully for different (but tulip chipset) cards?
abortman i gonna shut the router box off and put that nic in brb
I dont know more about that debian source
/msg dpkg compile kde stuff
does the nic stop working (so you do an ifconfig down) ?
but whats the reason that its giving me kernel panic error
because the kernel is panicking?
I love the fact that hauppauge tv capture cards conflict with other sound cards
anyone recommend a gui for dvdauthor
that’s just WONDERFUL
do you mean I have to install kde to get the app to work
qt is the underlying kde lib
what app?
no, you don’t have to install kde
qdvdauthor, a gui for dvdauthor
you are compiling from sources? if so, check out INSTALL file, it should list necessary libraries
so what to type dpkg compile kde ?? yeah, it doesn’t. Thats why I am also asking about a dvd authoring with a gui. Any ideas?
use anther slot ?
did you bother looking at the factoid and the wiki article it referenced?
there is not an INSTALL file?
geo-rge: yes there is an INSTALL file, it says if you have trouble install qt so, here i am
what is dvd authoring anyway?
but ./configure script should tell you about libs it depends on
asg, i tried,it doesn’t work it is a vhost environment btw after i do that, mrgt stopped working
yes, it says if you get the problem I am getting install qt, trouble is dont know the exact package name to install and apt-cache search qt yields a whole bunch of files
it’s kinda hard to get new folks used to building stuff… I’d be willing to do it, but I have expenses, and I’d be charging you
apt-cache search qtlib3
not it says: Make sure you have (at least) libqt3-mt-dev and qt3-dev-tools. If during compilation, the build fails because a file is missing (for example, qlist.h), this means this software is using obsolete headers. Please, report this fact to the developers of this software, and to complete the build, install libqt3-compat-headers.
no… apt-cache search libqt3
and I charge -double- if you lie about what you read
geo-rge: thanks , qdvdauthor is a front end to a dvd file system creation tool allowing you to burn dvd’s that will be recognized by standard dvd players
why do you need a front end?
geo-rge: do you know how to do it without a front end? err…. *does he
I don’t know how to do it with a front end… but if it’s a front end to a single program (like xcdroast is to cdrecord), then it ought to be fairly easy
my INSTALL file does not say that, mine says if you get this error…. make sure you have qt-devel installed… It doesn’t say libqt3…. I downloaded the source tar today from their site. my INSTALL file does not say that, mine says if you get this error…. make sure you have qt-devel installed… It doesn’t say libqt3…. I downloaded the source tar today from their site.
your INSTALL file is not debian specific; we are giving you debian specific instructions. Why are you compiling something instead of using the debian package anyway?
don’t need you to build it. Can do myself, know the whole ./configure ,, make install thing. Just did not know what qt-devel was and had dozens of entrys in apt-cache search qt
———————-+
in this case we have someone who either lied by not reading something and saying they did or else lied by saying the content was not what was said… which makes it hard to trust their word which wastes time that people like me could be using for other things
and the wiki page lists the package you need to install.
I find my time valuable. anyone else feel the same way?
would be easier to just get the package from debian-multimedia
abortman here is my latest info http://pastebin.ca/678926
asg, it seems mrtg daemon will run one pID at onetime whatever there are more than one cfg is defined in cron.d
i think everything is in there
can someone tell me a tool about reading pdf files that resumes session on the page you left a document last time you started the app?
i do second level tech support for a living - helping people online is easy compared to that
try packages.debian.org
i told you .. look at the module optons options
Laser, kpdf
you’re the butthead that yelled at me this week!
no. find it yourself.)
abortman what do you mean by that
evince modules have options
in danish?
mandarin ?
how do i list em….i know how to modprobe
hai!
my apt-cache search qdvdauthor returns nothing, is this a standard package?
brb dog go peepee
why the hell it’d scan devices located lower down first is a mystery to me
see if mrtg can be configured to use separate pids
i thought evince did
asg, i will check that.thanks.
geo-rge: you don’t need to call me a liar. That will sure as hell just make you look like a prick
guess not
Package: qdvdauthor Priority: optional Section: graphics Installed-Size: 8104 Maintainer: Christian Marillat marillat@debian.org
that would make two of us, wouldn’t it?
asg, by the way, there must has a resolution to let mrtg work on a vhost envt. otherwise this tool is a garbage ,lol i think so
will you two get a room and continue it in there? most of us actually have legitimate questions ya know
I don’t use vhost, I use OpenVZ personally.
asg, I see.
deb http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/debian-multimedia/ unstable main
I dunno, once he crossed that line, it kinda pissed me off… go figure
are there Debian very small installs for small USB sticks that are fully encrypted by default ?
is that all ?
ok i back abortman how does one list module options?
modinfo
are you talking where i would “make”
To all who feel that their time has been wasted answering my questions, this is all volunteer, if you have so much to do, except fishing for funds, then go do it. Or, simply don’t answer anything that is beneath you
in sources?
i have a devcpp splash screen on the screen and it wont get away…
? oh
….
abrotman, jeff_hann, geo-rge: thanks you guys
How do I tar.gz a directory I need to tar up a directory ~/data
I don’t think I would have been so pissed or so forward about it if you had simply said you didn’t understand what you were reading… at least then, that would have made a point at which you could have been aided in understanding that part of the process
http://pastebin.ca/678936 has ‘modinfo tulip’ in it at bottom now
diafic_, tar -cvzf directory.tar -C /var/directory
some here find my questions to ignorant to be asked / wish to extort money to give answers. I find that abusive and unethical. Very high schoolish, IMHO
so, i kinda need to update to kernel 2.6.22. Ia am runing debian etch and the nvidia driver.. what would be the smoothest way to update?
diafic_, tar -cvzf directory.tar.gz -C /var/directory
thanks mbroeker
diafic_, -C is not needed at any time, but its useful, too…
Cowardly refusing to create an empty archive
but even before that, it seemed like (1) I’m thinking, “why does he want to build it if it’s a package?” and (2) if he wants to build it from nondebian sources, why ask about that here
abortman i think the driver for it = de2104x and i put that ‘modinfo de2104x’ in this post http://pastebin.ca/678938
geo-rge: no, you assumed I did not read, as I have stated. I did. I even posted what is in my INSTALL file downloaded today. I submit that you got pissed because I did not want or need you to use your valuable time and pay you. Perhaps you are in the wrong place. Maybe their is a consulting firm just begging for your skills. However, I think not.
diafic_, yes. sorry, throw the -C option in the trash. its not useful there. my fault.
woo!
been googling for a while now on this.. I’m trying to add spaces to a string in a shell script so when i echo the variable instead of returning “hi bob” it returns “hi bob” any help would be appreciated
It rides!
take this argument in PM the remaining 758 of us aren’t really interested
no, you’re asking about building something in a place that has packages which are distributed. so building outside of the debian build systems is probably off topic here, and so you’re fair game
again, pm
“Pc crisis, cannot play any dvd” Come on, repair it.
geo-rge: no if you had bothered to read, I also clearly stated that my debian dist list does not contain qdvdauthor, unless of course, i have been lying the whole time to somehow incite you to blast me.
so why help the ex?
now i am back… Shadowcat, good question. i dont know
send your current gf to do the repair job
the called my at 7 pm in the morning again and told me that the dvd plays fine now, thx, but i am not able to install openoffice. damn bastard, repair this, too.
ok, let me get this straight… 7 pm in the morning?
“she wanted to install a bittorrent ooo archive and hasnt any bittorent client on his machine and has never heard about bittorrent… geo-rge, ok. am or pm is morning?
yes, one of those is morning it’s am
well, ok. she called me at 7am in the morning, folks…
thanks a lot to all
so is she single? if you want to deal with her that’s one thing… but if not, someone else from your school/work/pool-of-knowing-folks could try
abortman can you look at this info http://pastebin.ca/678948 and tell me which driver the “Digital Equipment Corporation DECchip 21041″ is using? it says tulip in its lspci name but i have 2 more drivers showing up in lsmod that goes to what i dont know. the MII and the de2104x
are you sure evince resumes from where you closed the document?
de2104x sounds close
thats what i was thinking too but in the lspci output it has “tulip in its name”
geo-rge, well, she has some friends, but they all are not familiar with her pc.
“tulip pass3″
I need a really small debian that installs encrypted on a small usb stick that installs a gui system that includes a pdf reader that watches my eyes to determine where I left off…
lol
oh, and it has no cd drive, no floppy, no hd, no cpu…
geo-rge: errr… damn small linux maybe?
geo-rge, she asked one of her experts to repair her usb-stick and finally gave me the whole device. The other guys had created a novel netware partition on the stick and the firmware got lost…
geo-rge: it’s debian-based
would that be just the base
he’s making fun of me actually. didn’t work out
? I’m making fun of at least 3 people
geo-rge: “watches your eyes”?
Hi! Is there an option to install KDE instead of Gnome in the initial Etch install?
ohh, i didn’t catch the joke
it was an ipod device, …
geo-rge: i wasn’t talking about you
oh, sorry
hi does anyone know of a low powered nas device- i don’t know if any one know how much power the mss draws (it can run openmss) … oh running debian if possible
good. i still have a chance of having some dignity left
you could use an nslu2
it remembers where
hi channel
at least in the version i’m using
asg - what can that handle ?
possibly… but you could just leave off the desktop thing until rebooting, and install it then
anybody aware of any UPnP server for Debian Etch ??
use ethtool
AstroGirl, i had the same problem and managed it by deselecting the X during install
mine is 0.4.0
http://www.cyrius.com/debian/nslu2/ (I’m running squid, dns, exim, screen, mutt, and other stuff on mine)
ah .. mine is 0.8.3
lol
AstroGirl, you can apt-get install it later
i c
oh nice
abortman i did the ‘modinfo de2104x’ what exactly am i looking for
there’s a separate cd1 for KDE or you can skip tasksel and install it manually later
the whole system is on a usb stick but you could use usb hd storage if need be.
anyways .. when you get there .. you’ll be able to use it
Thanks geo-rge & mbroeker - I’ll deselect “Desktop environment” and install it manually.
you’ll have to learn what those options do
Is packages.debian.org down ??
it will be a long development process you know…
AstroGirl, yes. its the proper way i think. only apps, that you want on your machine…
you might also need to include a x server
yes
i dont see an “options” in its output
or check the boot options install tasks=kde-desktop should get you kde
parameters maybe?
abrotman: okay
Hello, I’m wondering what repositories are safe to add to Etch for non-free multimedia codecs ?
since when? 3 mins ago? I was just on it
the debian-multimedia ones should be fine
!marillat
i heard debian-multimedia is a repository of unofficial Debian packages, not in Debian for various legal reasons, maintained by Christian Marillat. For instructions to add APT sources, ask me about debian-multimedia.etch.
geo-rge: not here
is there any driver for Speedtouch 536 v6 gateway?
interesting hark, when would I see the boot options? At the very beginning before the graphical installer?
asg do you know the watts the thing uses ?
!debian-multimedia.etch
/etc/apt/sources.list; apt-get update; (as root)
packages.debian.org is DOWN
ty geo-rge
hang on, let me walk upstairs and find out.
sorry, its for USB connection.
np
try the Fn keys, one of them should have it
why i can’t find nvu in apt-cache?
ok, looking for that now, hark. thanks
it’s dead project now
alexalex, try Kompozer instead.
szachista
really??? NVU is dead???
i dont have any idea what im looking for…i see the ‘modinfo de2104x’ output and section called parameters…is that what im supposed to be looking at?
i think there is no kompozer package in official repos
noooo way. it was great
szachista, right, i mean download it from its own site.
it hasn’t been updated since 2005 or 2006
szachista what can i use to create web pages?
Professional J2ee Web Hosting!
Kompozer is the replacement for NVU.
hmmm, didn’t say. It isn’t a lot though
is this message im getting distro specific?
when you asked how do you find out about the module, I thought you meant the parameters… no?
ok thanks wlnet
no really, it has just fixed some bugts
i don’t find mod_watch for etch
great … i’m trying to find the most energy efficient thing and no fecking vendor puts up the details
looks like 5 - 7 watts
yeah - how do you figure ?
is there any alternative for screen, which doesn’t need so much resources? i only need detech/atach features
szachista, it is as close to NVU as anything else can get.
wlnet but kompozer begins with k. that’s bad..
i dont know…i was originally trying to find if there was a module patch for it but abortman said it might have been applied already…so i thinking im looking for info to see if it was applied or not
DustyDingo, dtach, i believe
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.arch.embedded/browse_thread/thread/0985f99b84300d86
you could look at the source
it’s not kde ap
alexalex, lol, why is it so?
F8 i think
ok 1 min
oh, modinfo doesn’t tell you that
BAD VERY BAD
oh no
nice
ah, nice
what am i doing with the info from modinfo de2104x
alexalex, lol, its a gnome app.
are the parameters compile options?
well you’ll find out what parameters a module accepts when inserted (for one thing)
thanks - i heard about the dectop before but yeah … 8 watts cannot go past that
I’ve been happy with it. Granted, it’s a little slow (133Mhz, 32M of ram) but still useable for lots of applications.
you mean when lsmod insert de2104x is done?
just before/as it’s inserted
ah asg you can overclock it to 266
i mean modprobe insert
Hi. I was wondering what is the advantage of Debian over Ubuntu its offspring?
you can if you are into that, I’m not enough of a gearhead to bother
anyone else having problems connecting to PDO?
wanna flamewar?
ah well - i found debian to be faster
i gonna go read the source that i dloaded with 2.6.22.6 brb
/msg dpkg why debian
Is there a way to get the public key (as ~/.ssh/known_hosts) of an host without getting the password prompt? Just get the key and exit. Can i do it?
ubuntu has more gui things to make things easier… debian, many of those (decreasing tho) you have to manually edit config files
ops
but it’s getting better…
wlnet i can’t find kompozer
- try apt-get remove kde
debian has far more developers than ubuntu has
it’s generally more stable (if you run stable)
No I don want a flamewar. There should be no reason that reasonable debate and discussion could and can not take place.
alexalex, www.kompozer.net
once a debian dist becomes stable, IT DOES NOT CHANGE
well, i choose debian over ubuntu becouse of bleeding edge packages in its repositories
I was hoping to speed up my AMD semprom with 1 gig of ram laptop by using a different and possibly lighter distro
except for critical fixes
yeah i tried it way - it’s i found it faster than ubuntu feisty
what are you running on your desktop? err the gui on the laptop
I am going to be using this laptop for business and I need to maintain an inventory database on it. Of course I cant find a database yet to use to store inventory on it but I am sure that someone has a GLP GNU one out there that is easy to use.
kde and gnome are sizable and fairly hungry resourcewise
claudio`: ssh-keyscan perhaps?
en1gma, http://rafb.net/p/X1gugy29.html
I am using XFCE and I dont mind it but I feel that there has to be something better. I tried FVWM-CRYSTAL but it crashed a bit
… your laptop has 1gig of ram a sempron cpu - how could that be slow lol
thanks, dtach was exactly what i was looking for, the MIPS binary needs about 10.5k, while screen,…
i see in the de2104x that the driver was released in 2004 and this version is 0.7
hmm… kexi is easy one
When you download Debian do you need more than just the first disk to get started?
where i can find libapache-mod-watch ?
ah no - i burned only the first disk way
I’m trying to get kdm to be willing to accept connections from 172.18.*
dbmoodb I feel its slow. That may not be true.
so the info i was reading on the net about that message that outputs to my screen every 2secs if from 2005 and 2006 so there prob is a patch for it
no really way try debian if you don’t like it then change
I am thinking about givining it a run.
\amethyst: yes, it works. THX
do it
ok,bye for now
or, figure out if you don’t like what you’re already running
en1gma, did you read my text at the end of the paste?
but what level of linux knowledge do you have ? - good sound hacker, noob god
it’s not lighter or heavier if my guess is right on what’s slowing you down
did you try to ask ##kernel ?
k gonna go there now
abrotman - i did notice a speed difference (i might be silly tho)
claudio`: you might need -t rsa,dsa for some hosts
speed difference in what ?
ubuntu feisty vs debian etch
which arch/subarch are you using?
I personally am just okay with computers. I have been running linux for about 5 years and am a network supervisor and security cheif for a financial firm that runs just about everything.
\amethyst: i used -Ht rsa and it works. THX
oh geo- ah amd barton core 2800
amd64?
way - how are you just ok lol ? nar - geo - amd athlon xp
isnt’ that a 32bit?
I can always learn more and I personally am not that great at coding in C or C++ for any platform.
it is
Athlon as far as I know is 32 bit but a good 32 bit
yeah
you can code in C to any extent? that puts you pretty far ahead
lol
you know what the preprocesser is? wayyy ahead
oh gotcha
oh I can just not as well as the developers I have seen working on most of the linux web hosting software or kernels
sorry abrot ?
got any of Holub’s stuff?
geo-rge: I am sorry but what is the question?
nevermind
one sec, let me compose one that’s more on topic
noooooooo asg - to ship the dectop it would cost more than the actualy thing
There are people I met while on vacation in Italy and in Arizona that totally blew me away with their comp skills
ok, what I’m thinking is that your slowdown might be caused by your desktop env this could probably be verified by looking at top for awhile
me ? sure
geo-rge You are most likly correct. That is why I have been experimenting with other desktops and such. What I am considering is that once I have my mind made up I can reimage my computer with a flavor of linux that is not bloated. And what id it you need to know about pre-processors? They are pretty much just fancy text manipulation tools that filter the include statements in a program. They can do more though.
both ubuntu and debian are package-based, so you could set what packages get installed nono, I was just commenting on your level
I am better with hard logic.
but most importantly, I would want to hand you the keys to your own choice I used to use no gnome or kde, but just fvwm2, and then sawmil which became sawfish
I have found lately that I use only a ew programs consitently
because at that time I had just succeeded getting x on my linux for the first time in 2 years or so of using linux
so I like the minimal desktop with just what I use and then if I want something more I know how to get it
so you could try to create your own wayouttherebuntu
and all I needed was lots of shell windows
lol no I have databases to think about
do you guys use pg or oracle or what
mysql
(please don’t say ms access, the true multitasker, where everyone waits for everyone else…) for a banking app?? wow
Anyone could point to a howto about properly taking a package from experimental?
!experimental
experimental is the bleeding edge of Debian Development. Packages here have been deemed unfit/DANGEROUS/untrustworthy/etc for release by the maintainer responsible for them. DO NOT INSTALL PACKAGES FROM EXPERIMENTAL WITHOUT KNOWING EXACTLY WHY AND WHAT YOU ARE DOING. #debian does not support experimental. for an actual description, see section 4.6.4.3 of the Developer’s Reference, or http://packages.debian.org/experimental/ experimental is the bleeding edge of Debian Development. that’s one hell of a bold move
why its for stats not $
hey how can i formate my disk and check if its any bad blocks or so?
Seen that already Iceweasel can’t establish a connection to the server at packages.debian.org.
i wouldn’t use mysql where it matters kind of down-ish
hi how can I find out what my XkbModel is?
when im compiling a kernel from a remote computer running putty how do i get it to display output when its compiling to the remote computer
use screen so you can re-attach to the terminal
thats a setting “screen” in putty?
no. !screen
i guess screen is allows you to have n terminals and easily switch between them, add keybindings, has its own scrollback and copy/paste and lets you resume all your sessions if your terminal dies or you get disconnected or http://www.michael-prokop.at/screen/ or at ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/screen or aptitude install screen
no, that’s running the screen program on the remote system
ewww nice… i thought there was only putty and that was it googling screen
no need to google, the factoid just gave you two links
and especially a way to install screen
sweet
Apt still works with /etc/apt/preferences? Found an article about pulling packages from experimental - but I don’t have that file
it does. but it’s very very bad for you to mix debian branches. see !bobbitt
hey guys.. whats the easiest way to read ones ip adress from ifconfig? need only my ip addy in a single line.. nothing else
ifconfig |grep name of device or just ifconfig ethX
been bugging around with grep.. but i still get some trash text.. i need only the ip address host adress not the whole print
get ipmasq. it does this inside a script. you can nick that code for yourself it uses sed/awk iirc
Only testing a more recent version for a bug and removing. I’m running sid already, so I shouldn’t have too much dependency problems, right?
how can I find out what my XkbModel is?
Is there any reason why I can’t manage repositories from Adept ? (sections are greyed out)
what keyboard do you have actually?
asg so when i install the “screen” program it will make it so my remote putty box will see everything just like i was typing on the host?
is your remote putty box running debian?
winxp
no dude.. i just want to slice and dice a text string dont need routing
frontunately that package does just that. so you can look at some of its sycripts and nick that part which does this I didn’t say anywhere you should actually use it
so you’ve grepped out the line of interest already, right?
what is the host running?
I need to update alsa (or ) oops… I need to update alsa (or at least the drivers) on etch. How can I do that?
an Estonian keyboard . It has “defender” written on it and it’s qwerty
how can i get the identification for a sata device.. like hdparm -i with ide disks?
you see everything even without screen. your initial question is kinda strange and useless.
dmesg has some data
\amethyst: well i was kind of hoping i could.. is there a way of searching numerics like perls: \d?
sdparm might help
how many keys? 102 or 104 or 105? usually eruopean keyboards (like my german) has 105 and is therefore pc105)
ah, nice, thanks a lot, i didn’t know this program exists
I told you. sed/awk
well sometimes when i do some commands on the winxp putty box they dont display the output
it may not work for sata, but worth a shot
which command?
umm what was it…let me think
seems to work, thanks a lot
you’re welcome
maybe ifconfig eth0 | grep -o ‘inet addr:[0-9.]*’ | sed -e ’s/.*://’
well for example right now if i had a monitor hooked upto the linux box it would be displaying messages about that network adapter….but when i hook to it with the remote putty box those messages dont make it to the remote machine
the -o tells grep to only print the part of the line that matched, not the whole line maybe make | tee /dev/console
I don’t know how many, I’ll try different variants
*** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
\amethyst: thanks a bunch it works like a charm
where ‘make’ is whatever command you were running
everytime one of those messages comes up about the nic i hear the hard drive make a quick little noise…so every 2secs i hear it ah ok
taiö -f /var/log/kern.log
then i would have to modprobe console?
meow ?
wols that command is showing the message correctly in putty but i cant type
cause it only displays
yea that message is still going off the hook every 2 secs and my hard drive too
what you want is to see your root console output
yea
what message is it?
oh you reminded me wols i need to get itunes open to grab the latest off the hoob
the | tee /dev/console should’ve shown you
k*
http://pastebin.ca/678993 but keeps repeating that every 2secs
and this constantly comes up? what kind of NIC is this eth2?
its got a “digital 21041-pb” chip on it
!ubuntu
Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it is not Debian, and it unlikely lives up to Debian’s standards (see Debian policy). Only Debian is supported on #debian. Use #ubuntu instead. Even if the channel happens to be less helpful, support for distributions other than Debian is offtopic on #debian.
6.0 Ethernet controller: Digital Equipment Corporation DECchip 21041 [Tulip Pass 3] (rev but it is using the de2104x module
can anyone recommend a good m3u player besides totem? with a gnome gui
invest $5 and get a new NIC
what?
rhythmbox? muine? quod libet?
lol
why not use audacious
well ##kernel told me to build the new kernel 2.6.22.6 and then if it still does it in there to make a bug report
or xmms
xmms doesn’t seem to work out of the box for internet mp3 radio nm xmms it is
im gonna try and hook my lan to that nic that is giveing that output message and see if it does work at least brb
for starters … not in etch
abrotman what is?
audacious
hello, why when a execute gedit in terminal i get this error http://rafb.net/p/71MYJp28.html ?
ehm I got it
are you in a su or something? Can you run any X programs?
I want the output of one command be the argument of another command. How can I compose this?
xargs
or “
\amethyst, yes, i can run any program
abrotman I think you misspell or something as it’s in etch
and i am in su i am using gnome
!info audacious etch
(Small and fast audio player which supports lots of formats), section sound, is optional. Version: 1.2.2-4 (etch), Packaged size: 736 kB, Installed size: 2352 kB
oh .. so it is!
=P
\but i execute gedit and it opens nut shows that error but*
\amethyst: ? I don’t understand
hmm, i’ve just installed a plextor sata dvd writer and i can see that the kernel finds it when i run dmesg but it don’t find any device name in /dev for it.. it’s non of the sd* devices i have.. at the same time, i’ve installed a sata hard disk which got a device name what could be wrong?
try HOME=/original/users/home gedit
maybe /dev/sr ?
“original” meaning the user you su’d from
/dev/sr doesn’t exist either
why not dmesg|grep PLEXTOR should show you what dev it’s using
\amethyst, now i get other error http://rafb.net/p/vgfzg184.html
he already said the kernel sees it
that’s what it returns: Vendor: PLEXTOR Model: DVDR PX-716A Rev: 1.08)
ok
/other/users/home should be the home directory of the user you su’d from like HOME=~camilo gedit
maybe there’s no dirver for it yet ? which doesn’t really make sense
\amethyst, sorry i did not understand you i grite gedit /home/camilo text
the burner is from 2005.. i really hope it has a driver
HOME=/home/camilo gedit filename
what version is your kernel?
2.6.18.. from stable
gnome programs look in the directory specified by the HOME environment variable for the session manager connection
do i need any special kernel options for sata dvd writers that i don’t need from sata hard disks?
I want the output of one command be the argument of another command. How can I compose this?
viller just pipe it
command2 `command1` that runs command1, splits its output into words, and uses them as the arguments to command2
do i need scsi cdrom support for sata drives?
for example, ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`
command1 | xargs command2 .. i told you that 15 minutes ago
you just said xargs and I should instantly understand how it works?
apt-get install locksmith locked my keys in the car
man xargs would be a good start eh ?
\amethyst: thanks it worked
or something like … ls -l `which bash` for another example oh .. which \amethyst covered
no more meow
hello all im using lighttpd with mod-mysql-vhost. but after some hours i get the error: (mod_mysql_vhost.c.350) mysql server has gone away
has it ?
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=420010 so my question…. can someone explain me the right-debian-way to patch the original-package with that source? i dont want recompile my own lighttpd-version i mean from lighttpd-webside
!source
To work with Debian source packages, cd to a location with free space. as root: ‘aptitude install build-essential fakeroot devscripts’ and ‘apt-get build-dep {packagename}’. as any user: ‘apt-get source {packagename}’, cd into the directory it creates, edit ‘debian/rules’ to suit, run ‘debuild -us -uc’.
abrotman, thnxs ill try
hi, is there a nice, simple frontend to ffmpeg for kde, i.e. for converting videos?
there is avidemux it is frontend for mencoder, but it can do the same job
romanp
ok thanks
err… and it’s not kde app but it’s the best one
hey how do i set a static ip on debian any ideas

hello everybody

Why does Iceweasel + embedded component often puts Iceweasel in an invalid state(doesn’t respond anymore)? Konqueror + same plugin never has this problem. Is this a known issue? Is it just that Iceweasel is so bloated that nobody knows what’s exactly wrong?
Dunno, I use Konqueror mostly, I usually only use Iceweasel as a secondary browser…
Firefox =1.5 was somewhat nice, but anything after that… I don’t see why software would become worse over time.
I mostly use firefox only at work, under Windows.
hiho, I’m trying to install ascent but I have a problem upon running the config script… it keeps telling me I need automake 1.5 or newer… however I tried now with automake 1.6 to 1.9 and always the same message appeared…
Its late here, gnite all.
hi all! i’m configuring PAM to authentificate with to an OpenLDAP server. All works fine, but, the /etc/pam_ldap.conf must be world readable? It’s permissions are 644, and in it are visible the password to bind the LDAP server…
if you want normal users to be able to authenticate, they have to be able to authenticate
the password should not be in there. instead it should be in /etc/ldap.secret which should be set accessible by root only
Moin!
how can I restore the original alsa installation from the etch installation? I have tried to upgrade alsa from cvs, and now sound doesn’t work.
have u tried alsa confg
ie, /etc/init.d/alsasound doesn’t exist anymore
yes, the rootdn password is in ldap.secret, but the bindn password not , is saved in pam_ldap.conf
it’s not installed
ok
hi guys
\amethyst, so, it must be world readable, isnt it?
well, you can’t avoid that. maybe you can restrict access in other ways. like blocking the ldap ports for outside networks
automatix cant find my debian version but when I cat /etc/debian_version it says 4.0 and the error says its for debain 4.0r0 only
blubberdiblub, ok, i’ll think about this blubberdiblub, \amethyst , thanks a lot : )
when i do a whats my ip i get my internal ip address, what is wrong?

do i need to set the “timer frequency” to a high number if im building a linux router box? i mean is this going to affect nat (so the higher the timer) the lower the responce to do something like nat
no
ive googled a bit and they say 100mhz for a server and 1000mhz for a desktop setting but im not doing either one of thoise
why are you compiling your own kernel?
not MHz
remember that problem with the messages every 2seconds i was getting
it’s easier to get a new NIC
##kernel told me to install lastest kernel and if it still does it make a bug report if its not broke i dont want to toss it out i was just wondering what would be the best setting for have 4 computers hooked up to that linux router box (timer frequency) that is
it’s not worth it
i would think i would want the highest but not sure
irrelevant. you won’t notice a thing no matter the setting
i’m having this problem http://paste.debian.net/36047 while im loading my harddrive
well the thing is i have 2 lne100tx in the system already and to get 2 more is $25.00 each so for 2 more that is total $50.00 and then in that case i might as well get a wrt54g
how about you just compile the kernel so that it actually works instead of fucking with every damn setting
so i wont have to get anything if i can get this to work and go spend the money on a hooker how about just answer the question and i can move on to messing with my kernel options
that’s a cheap hooker
shes 50 years old close to 50 probably
ask ##kernel .. they asked you to compile thedamn thing
someone here told me to go there wasnt it you
yes .. but not to compile your kernel just to get more info about your error
well after you sent me there this is what they told me to do
then ask them about hte obscure settings
Debian uses 250 by default… I’d recommend taking a debian .config and doing make oldconfig
just wondering what the “timer frequence” does exactly cause the “help” isnt very descriptive
rather than setting everything yourself It’s basically the maximum timeslice for a process
i did take the debian config-2.6.22-1-486 as the base
I’m having trouble updating my kernel. Could somebody help?
what’s the error?
It builds OK
\amethyst so a higher freq number actually polls slower
is there a howto on doing a headless install?
I ‘m having trouble getting it to run
bark was that Q for me
err, 1/HZ is the maximum timeslice rather
no
since that is my other option (i have no monitor)
if you have no monitor then how are you using irc?
i was thinking it would be easier w/ the IDE-usb converter and doing the install straight from my laptop
:p
your hard drive may be failing (or the box was powered off without properly shutting down). you could run badblocks on the device and maybe even smarttools. if they are only a couple of blocks, you could try making them usable again by writing to them (and only them)
the box is a router gateway box right now
ssh in and then irc ?
i’m on a laptop
how can I stop the kernel autoloading a module? I’ve tried /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
it dosen’t matter, just compile it using oldconfig. all you want to see is whether the nic works..
any clue of how to do that?
!tell shaurz about blacklist
So I built the kernel, did a “make modules_install”, then copied the bzImage to /boot, deleted the old kernel stuff from /boot, and edited grub’s menu.lst
first run badblocks on the device. like that: badblocks /dev/hdb
well im pretty familiar with making custom configs…but some questions i did have about it… timer frequency is not the very beginning of the .config
are all the drivers necessary to access your root partition compiled in?
i set timer freq to 100hz hope thats good for a nat box
jelly-home: as far as I know
!headless
low hz is ok for a server.
hmm, no factoid oh ya, /me msges dpkg
I copied the .config from the original kernel I was compiling
it is. i’m running fine with that on my server that does all kinds of things, including nat
Which appeared to have more than enough stuff compiled in
original, as in a Debian build?
it’s probably fine… higher HZ gives more interactivity at the expense of thoroughput, and you don’t need much interactivity on a router
yes
debian builds most stuff as modules.
It gave some errors, but built
Capn_Fish in debian make_kpkg is way better than doing what you did Capn_Fish here’s a good guide for you http://www.howtoforge.com/kernel_compilation_debian_etch
you’ll need to use initramfs, then
OK
btw when you compile your kernel “on your own” without make_kpkg, just run make install to install the kernel in boot and get grub updated automatically

How do a convert filename from one KOI to UTF charset?
using recode or iconv
One problem is it 3/4 times loads up KDM. I’m not exactly sure why and neither is my log
jelly-home, Thnx. I thought that iconv convert body of files
hmmm, how can I download a specific version of a packet with apt again? apt-get install package=2.5 doesnt work
well, you can convert a filename too.
jelly-home, Thanks!
or maybe use convmv
something like echo mv “old-name” $(echo old-name | recode koi8r..utf8)
that’s unsafe with spaces
Thanks for advice! I’ll use convmv
\amethyst: no it’s not
jelly-home: If the filename has two spaces in a row, they’ll be condensed down to one jelly-home: assuming the default setting for IFS
\amethyst: oh, I forgot to quote old-name the second time, right
“$(echo “old-name” | recode koi8r..utf8)” you need to quote the $() and I was wrong about what happens… the target will split into words and you’ll get something like mv “foo bar” foo bar
I assumed an interactive shell which does the right thing with $()
?
\amethyst: it doesn’t expand $() twice
How can I configure a vnc server using ssh?

jelly-home, any way to figure out why KDM does not work every time ?
sort -u goes by the key not the whole line doh
I’d take a look at /etc/init.d/kdm first, see if there’s anything log-related to enable. if not, at least put a set -x at the beginning, then try to see what fails on lenny, I have # uncomment, if you want tons of debug info in your syslog … #ARG=”$ARG -debug 255″ before that, make usre it’s not X’ fault
jelly-home, the real problem is that the HDD in this older laptop isnt too great. jelly-home, how would I do that?
check /var/log/Xorg.0.log at the time kdm fails, pastebin it if not sure
jelly-home, ill ssh so i can copy
