uh no, data=journal ext3 is ineffective but data=order(default) and data=writeback is OK
could someone help me, please?
ahh. metadata only journaling be ordered
hmm, if a server is hanging due to something drainin all the memory, is there a way to get some kind of dump of some sorts when this occurs? It’s not actually crashing the box as such just providing no memory for any other services,i just wondered if there was a package that would be useful in getting information on the process responsible or osmething
aside from that, you still can’t be sure of secure deletion
warning: Setting locale failed. warning: Please check that your locale settings: LANGUAGE = (unset) LC_ALL = (unset), why do i get that error message?
man locale
What are all the mechanisms in lenny/sid that load modules?
yeah i get that, oh well. 100% security is impossible, heh… eveyrtime i read about “x is a good method” i find some article saying “x has been broken” a few days/weeks later
I want to make sure my sound cards are loaded in the correct order, but the system is so opaque that I have no idea why some modules are being loaded. I see /etc/modules, there’s also /etc/modprobe.conf, but it’s generated by update-modules which is an obsolete program. Does this mean /etc/modprobe.conf is also obsolete? If not, what’s the replacement for update-modules Anyway, questions, but I see no documentation
hey, why has debian moved from exim to postfix? as default MTA
man modules; man modprobe.conf it hasn’t
it hasn’t.
/etc/modprobe.conf shouldn’t be there, as /etc/modprobe.d/* wil be ignored
oh
I read both man pages already what about modules.conf? should it exist? “No manual entry for modules.conf” where can I find a document that explains all the possible ways a module can be loaded on a Debian system?
how can I do remote desktop from windows machine to linux. I have vncserver installed on my debian machine.
what about it?
do you want to connect to an already running X session or start a new one?
I want to connect already running X session
then you don’t want vncserver, you want rfb are the boxes right next to each other?
how i can change charset? dpkg-reconfigure ?????
console or X?
console
consolechars iirc !consolechars charset dpkg I don’t like you anymore
I have krfb also installed on my linux machine.
never heard of it.. but sounds disgusting
I am doing windows remote desktop to that machine but its not connecting bI am doing windows remote desktop to that machine but its not connecting/b
realvnc.com if the machines are sitting right next to each other you would be better off with synergy !info rdp
dpkg-reconfigure locales tms? etc
How can I kill all programs using the sound device?
you need to start x0rfbserv or whatever the hell the K-crap is called on the linux host box then use the viewer from realvnc.com on windows
man fuser what kind of error do you get?
ok I am seeing that
I don’t get an error. The main problem I want to solve is that applications use snd-emu10k1 and not snd-intelsomething
hi ! i’m trying to install an etch on a asus mobo with SATA SIS968. I tried to load different sata modules during the install without succes, my disqk isn’t recognized. Now i’m looking for help, tips or any idea. Thanks
hi, whats a good graphical mail client in linux (running xfce), not thunderbird
using udev? blacklist it (/msg dpkg blacklist)
I am now using modconf to make sure the intel one isn’t being loaded, but it would be better if it were my second card. I think it’s already blacklisted.
does debian default 2.6.18 kernel package has options for iptables? iptables ready?
yes.
I killed the process, but it’s still “in use”.
rmmod
put it in compatabilty mode in the bios
ok, so how do i export the exising firewallrules, and import a new existing firewall?
i tried AHCI but without any success
!iptables
i guess iptables is the user-space process used to administer iptables kernel parts on top of netfilter, or ask me about netfilter docs, or at http://netfilter.org/ or http://lartc.org/.(check it out because iptables (2.4.x) has some security holes) See also: masq, or try #iptables for help, or for a proper debian-way of setting up iptables, please read http://www.howtoforge.com/node/450
you are talking about ahci right ?
!alsa-checklist
/dev/dsp` work for root?
isn’t rmmod an alias for modprobe -r? -f* I missed /dev/mixer it’s ok now
i have 3 options in the bios : IDE - AHCI - RAID i’ve tried every options
whatever is in your bios that says compatable
realvnc.com viewer is not free?
mornin real is a bit crappier than tight
ok gonna look one more time
xtightvncviewer is very good, many compression options and such
modconf also calls “update-modules”. is there some tool that is not obsolete?
use alsaconf
i have some network devices (transparent bridges i believe) that work with windows but not debian. Are there any additional networking packages that i could install to try? The devices are http://www.solwise.co.uk/net-powerline-pla-14-e.htm If i first plug them into a windows box and then a Debian box then Debian can get a lease. If i do not plug them into doze first then Debian cannot get a lease.
alsaconf also calls update-modules and it doesn’t work it inserts a game port module
!doesn’t work
Look buddy, “doesn’t work” is an ambiguous statement. Does it sit on the couch all day long? Does it procrastinate doing the dishes? Does it beg on the street for change? Please be specific! Define ‘it’ and what it isn’t doing. Give us more details so we can help you without needing to ask basic questions like “what’s the error message”.
instead of the sound driver
get a job
I was continuing a sentence, do you have some auto responder?
next timetry one line and many sentences finish your thought processes.
xtightvncviewer is not for windows? I want to do remote desktop from windows machine to linux machine
!enter
The enter key is not a substitute for punctuation. Hitting enter unecessarily makes it difficult to follow what you are saying. Consider using ‘,’, ‘. ‘, ‘;’, ‘…’, ‘—’, or ‘:’ instead.
^^ anyway… continue
i have looked one more time but there’s no “compatible” option, only DISABLE - IDE - AHCI - RAID. Have you got another idea ?
it works on both OSs apt-get install vncserver xtightvncviewer
so, imho, alsaconf is one big piece of crap.
on windows, you can run tight vnc server and run client on linux
it is
whats the sata controller? would have thought it would work set to ide ich9 or something?
I’m sorry ?
its based on a SIS968
from linux to windows I remote desktop working,
oh, sis
yup
alsaconf just works for the most people without any headaches
read /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/README.Debian.gz
right, for people that only have one device.
alsaconf unloads all snd modules, discovers your card, and loads the modules again.
yeah, IIRC, that document admits it
disable one soundcard in BIOS, if needed
what installer are you using?
that could be the problem
or just blacklist it, make sure you have no entry in /etc/modules
what month is this
net-install just downloaded 1 week ago
I did not see an option to disable it in my BIOS
ahh yes, next month hopefully I can get new ati drivers with AI glx
second device isnt a onboard-chip?
one device is onboard-chip the new device is PCI card.
hrm, the etch installer should hande ahci
when you plugin in the pci soundcard, on board should stop working automatically,no?
so it should be in BIOS, just look harder
i have set ahci in the bios, and during the debian install in expert mode i have added the ahci support, but it doesn’t work
!kmuto
For etch (or sarge) with up-to-date kernels, see http://kmuto.jp/debian/d-i/
^^ try the newest kernel he has
or just use a daily build of the netinstaller?
is there a debian package to fetch album art?
not really that I know of, I however know you can use Amarok to do this #amarok apt-get install amarok sqlite or mysql-server
Unfortunately, alsaconf can only detect one sound card and is generally a poorly written program.
thanks!
i’m not sure to understand what you mean … What do i have to do during the install ?
From the docs
hello folks, I have am emergency, well not quite that serious, BUT i was fiddling with a script to move all the avi’s in my photos folder, which was only 9, but i got it working and moved them all, then I accidentally deleted a few of the new files, without realising that mv MOVEs the original files over. Is tere any way to recover my rm’ed files ???
go to that link dpkg said and get one of those installers
hello
which file system are you using?
ext3 I believe
ok thanks will try this
you are fucked
damn that sucks
sorry to say, but only ext2 supports undelete because it doesn’t zero out the file inode
ok
anyway, you can try to manually scan the hw raw data for patter in file headers and footersmatching those of avi or whatever else format there are a few tools to do this, unfortunately i don’t kow the names of them
that sounds rather complex
not really just grepping kinda
ok.
maybe someone else can tell you more about data recovery i only deal with ntfs at work sorry
yeah. I have had to recover photos from ntfs before, with 90% success!
try to start at sleuth kit
is that a package?
yup, it’s in debian but it’s primitive
heh.
i forgot to wake up before the sun came up now i have to stay hungry all day long
fascinating
anyone used sleuth or autopsy before?
i tried them before, autopsy is a web frontend for sleuthkit, install them and play with it
yep im onto it…
as i say, it’s primitive, you will have to face a moderate learning curve…
how to install xserver-xgl ?? :] where can i find some how to ?
!xgl
it has been said that xgl is the X server architecture layered on top of OpenGL and takes advantage of available accelerated 3D rendering hardware. It is designed to integrate well with the composite extension and performs best when a compositing manager is running. Ask me about “compiz” and “xgl-howto”, or see see http://wiki.debian.org/Xgl
ati video card?
yeap
well you’re in luck wait a month or two and fglrx will support aiglx
yeap - i’ve heard that (v8.42.xx)
is ati going ot be the linux host gpu of choice?
but now how to do that ? (i want to have BERYL )
dunno
crap
beryl is dead when new ati drivers comeout
you need to use xgl
i think compiz-fusion is the way to go now
what u mean ?
just enable composite, and load up compiz-fusion not right now though you can try it with xgl but it will b slow as balls
yeap, i know, but don;t know how to install xserver-xgl ? :]
read what dpkg said

~/.gtkrc-2.0 ; fixes the keybindings. see also firefox support, or ask me about iceweasel
does anyone know a repository with debianized fglrx 8.41 sources?
i like it
!iceweasel
i guess iceweasel is the name of a DFSG-free fork of Firefox, which replaces Firefox in Debian starting from Etch. It is currently different from the browser with the same name from GNU (http://www.gnu.org/software/gnuzilla) although it is possible that the two projects will join forces in the future. To learn about the reasons for the fork, ask me about why iceweasel.
its all the same
it’s assbadgers all the way down
except licensing of course !badger

how the hell do you view permissions in the XXX format with ls?
porn format?
man ls?
so you dont see the drwxrwxr-x i looked at that
hey, how can I see the amount of used space of /dev/st0, for example?
and you would see 755 etc
dh
do you not know what drwx—— means?
yes i know what permissions are
dh?
and i would much rather view them in a different format
so whats the reason behind listing them as the mode numbers
convert them in your head…
hmm. alias ls=’/path/to/script’

8.38
im wondering when they are going to start releasing weekly updates of testing again for debian-cd
anyone has idea why i’m getting that error?
I agree that things should stay onTopic, #ubuntu is no help at all, you guys are priceless.
may 27 is getting older and older every day…
tictac i have configured that file already
iirc i installed locales pkg, or did a dpkg-reconfigure locales
but i dont know whats wrong
ask #debian-boot on irc.oftc.net
ok, i’ll try that..
locales is definately the problem
i see. i’m installing it..
and the version in sid ?
hmm. will do.
3 AM) plb:
admittedly .. it really doesn’t matter .. you could use an etch netinst and upgrade i asked about etch first
oh oops 8.38
my current position in the world prohibits me from downloading packages endlessly :-\
ah .. 8.40 for amd64 in sid .. 8.38 fro the rest
i was going to purchase them and have them sent weekly
yeah I found that odd
could be a few reasons for that

hi there, I would like to reinstall a complete system to another partition, and I dont want to use installation disks, because the machine is up and runnin. is there a convenient method to use? something with chroot maybe?
debootstrap man debootstrap
thank you I’ll check it
np
actually my problem is that I’m still using kernel 2.4 with sarge on that machine. and after putting kernel 2.6 to that machine, apache2 doesnt start, hangs when apachectl tries to start apache
any errors in syslog?
and anyways its kinda mess, it would be nicer to install a clean etch on it no errors :~
heh.
no errors, it seems to ‘hang’
any apache errors?
nope I didnt find any
_gAri-: uninstall apache .. upgrade to etch .. reinstall apache ?
its possible, but the main problem is that apache should run no logic solution for this issue port 80 is open, but nothing served on it I traced the only apache process that was running (apachectl still running also), it was waiting at read80( or something like this
how can I give a user access to start a server up on port 80 without them being root?
ampex, either with sudo or with chmod +s binary
so, there is no way to run squid for instance on port 80 without it effectively running as root and having access to the entire filesystem?
ampex, but in both cases, the binary will run as root and in the case that you cant trust your user, forget it. if your user starts squid via sudo or similar, thats ok. as long as your user isnt able to do a sudo mypersonalwritablescript it will be safe
how would I configure sudo to allow the squid user to only run squid as root
/etc/sudoers
visudo damnit!
ampex, in this case your user is able to call sudo squid without parameters
would I be able to kill it?
sudo does not really care.
sudo squid -rootshell or similar wont work. thats a nice feature of sudo. you can explizit tell the sudo wrapper of what is allowed and what not
certainly it makes no difference to sudo, if there’s no syntax errors
and unfortunately you tell it with globs instead of regexps leading to fun config lines like CHAT_RESTARTERS ALL=(chat) /etc/init.d/inetchat, /etc/init.d/inetchat [a-z]*, !/etc/init.d/inetchat console

no, it’s dumb syntax
well my question is, I can’t use realtime as a user and forgot how to do so
it possibly has to do with /etc/security/limits.conf and rtprio that should give you enough keywords for a google search
yep thx

Are there boot cd/dvds for lenny?
how do I force apt to re-retrieve the repositories? on my other box I run apt-get update and have a lot of “Ign” messages plus it happens way too fast

short bus here i come!
hi after reading some pages on the debian main site it’s still not quite clear to me what are my options for installing a 64bit Debian that can run 32bit applications and how different those options from the way Gentoo treats 64bit+32bit userlands
could anyone give me a starting point for changing my crypted LVM passphrase?
hi all
man cryptsetup
does “adding” a key mean there will be two keys?
use addkey then delete key
one of my workers managed to do something wrong when updating debian last time he got asked some questions, and he chose the wrong one
fire him!
I am not even sure what was updated this was a dist-upgrade
so whats the problem now
now he can’t manage to login to the server other than in single.mode
and aptitude logs everything
can you see the machine’s video output?
I can’t, but I have a guy there that can he manages to login in single-user mode
as root?
yeah
so… does it boot to full mode or not?
full mode? it boots in single user mode
stop telling us what does work and tell us what doesn’t
I just said
… no, you didn’t
you can’t login to the box locally by just booting it, and you can’t login through SSH
you said what does work
Affordable Php5 Web Hosting Provider
why can’t you login? is the root password somehow different in full mode? is it not finishing booting?
now he can’t manage to login to the server other than in single.mode
it’s not prompting for a user/pass at all
is ssh running? okay, so why not?
yes exactly why not
look at the screen? how far does it get?
it doesn’t say and I’m not there
so the screen is completely blank?
what I’m guessing is that he altered the auth system to something else so it’s not using regular authentication
if you don’t even see the login prompt and ssh isn’t running, it doesn’t sound like it is booted
check inittab
it sounds like it is not completing the boot sequence
do you know what singlemode IS? it is booting allright
yes, why do we keep talking about singlemode?
how can i check the crontab and see what is exactly going to be running for some reason i have something in /etc/crontab and it isn’t running
some tard was talking about disabling getty’s here the other day
vader–: crontab -l
i have this
vader–: but that’s different to /etc/crontab, which is a file you can open and look at
/dev/null 2&1
but it isn’t runnin
according to http://packages.debian.org/search?searchon=contents&keywords=snd-emu10k1.ko&mode=exactfilename&suite=stable&arch=any installing linux-image-2.6.18-5-486 should result in a file /lib/modules/2.6.18-5-486/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1.ko … but this files doesn’t exist on my system….. what am I doing wrong?
vader–: maybe you should pipe output to /dev/null only after you have it working
I am trying public key authentication in SSH, but the it aint working, i suspect it is file permission problem, can any one help me?
so when i edit the crontab should i run crontab -e or do a vi /etc/crontab?
vader–: until then it will email you the output
he gets a prompt for username types root
vader–: crontab -e
and then gets a message that it can’t find cert that’s how far he gets
hmmm
maybe just rm .ssh/authorized_keys and start from the beginning using ssh-copy-id, thats about as fast as checking the logs then fixing perms
ssh-copy-id ?
there’s a program for that?
wow
I’ve always done it the hard way
I wonder what you’re using for authentication
I’ve always used the standard unix one
if you can figure out what package was configured wrong you can dpkg-reconfigure packagename
sounds like pam goodness
yeah, it does sound like pam
am actually on a windows platform, i wonder how i go about with that
Is there a way in korganizer to specify time zones for certain meetings…
maybe see what pam packages you can find in the installed packages list, and then see what depends on em, and run rpkg-reconfigure on various ones? I know it’s a stab in the dark…
poor guy D:
my ~/.ssh is drwx—— and my ~/.ssh/authorized_keys is -rw——-
thanks for the help
thanks and what about your home?
authorized_keys is -rw-r–r- for me
as long as root can get in to your home that should work
id_dsa should be -rw——, obviously
i suppose there is no need for an id_dsa as i am only authenticating into using authorized keys
mine’s the unparanoid default, drwxr-xr-x
thanks, will try again.
/upgrade in irssi is awesome
yes, you only need private keys at starting points. you can use agent forwarding most of the rest of the time
aptitude logs everything where?
/var/log/aptitude
hm
assuming you were using aptitude
then it doesn’t log everything there default it seems
thanks, do you know where the secure logs are in debian?
he was using apt-get dist-upgrade or something
blj /var/log/
um… do you mean /var/log/auth.log ? not sure what you mean by “secure” then that’s not aptitude
yes the authorisation log , thanks for hte help will check it
why would stuff in the crontab that is set to run every 5 minutes not run
then does apt-get log anything by default?
I’m not sure if that’s where sshd complains to… try syslog and messages and daemon.log I can never remember which is which vader–: have you unsilenced the output yet?
this is what is in there */5 * * * * cactiuser /usr/bin/php /usr/share/cacti/site/poller.php /dev/null 2/var/log/cacti/poller-error.log
/dev/null 2&1
thanks, am trying on debug mode anyway.
vader–: if you want to know what is going wrong *don’t silence the output*
vader–: ntpdate dude
i get /bin/sh: cactiuser: command not found
vader–: yeah, why do you have that in there?
because the damn thing wasn’t syncing time
vader–: and use ntpd instead of crontabbing ntpdate, its preferable
vader–: is this /etc/crontab or crontab -l ?
crontab -l
vader–: what are those user names? vader–: they are not part of a command vader–: and unsilence that output until you are finished I mean, honestly.
thats who i want the command to run a as
vader–: well, user crontabs don’t work that way vader–: they run as the person who typed ‘crontab -e’
gotcha
crontab -e -u username
vader–: while /etc/crontab is a system tab yeah or that
i had it in /etc/crontab but that wasn’t working either
/dev/null 2&1
ya
vader–: that says “don’t ever email me about problems ever”
i took that out
you can put it back later
if it outputs anything annoying
good cron commands don’t output anything unless there’s a problem
and then they do
cool thanks for the help
hmm? cron emails by default..
does it matter if the sshd_config has ServerKeyBits as 768 and my authenticating keys has 1024 bits?
yes, I’m talking about the habit of people piping to devnull all the time in crontabs most good unix commands output nothing if they are working, so cron would only email you in the event of a problem (the ideal situation)
what is a good newb-friendly GUI email client without the overabundance of features found in thunderbird/opera/outlook?
thunderbird is pretty simple what would you take out of it?
eudora?
sparrw, claws-mail
not so sure about that, but ok
petemc, but i had no luck with claws-mail and debian.. iirc it was only in experimental branch petemc, sorry i meant sparrw
aiight
extensions, theming, filters, javascript, labels, layouts
none of those actually affect you unless you specifically invoke them
82.211.59.90 oh, wrong paste ^^ how can i test my ram in a running system?
do stuff.
hmmm
they take up memory, and menu space, and disk space, and toolbar space, and widget space
crontab still isn’t running
oh noes disk space
i have debian installed on machines with spare storage measured in kilobytes. so yes, “oh noes disk space”
you’re going to have trouble storing the mail then
only if i try to store it :-p
I just think Thunderbird’s interface is pretty sparse compared to MS’s
oh, i agree
takes about an hour to go through all outlook’s stupid options and I still can’t bottom-post whereas thunderbird takes about 90 seconds
this is for someone who needs 2 buttons. reply and delete
hehe
and delete is optional
well, I do work with people for whom two sentences of text instead of one on a form, will confuse them for upwards of 5 minutes
sounds like some of my users
hi hi folks I just installed a library from a debian package and it put this file libblah.so.1.3.4 into /usr/lib
as ya do
and apparently i need a symlink like libblah.so to make it work what is going on here and why doesn’t it do it automatically?
the program that needs the symlink is what? is it another debian package?
hi, i need a database client that connects to an oracle database and can execute query’s on it, and give baclk results to the user, any suggestions
any best sHe[15] is a spam bot? heh
ld for a start
your third party binary application is somewhat badly compiled, that’s why
???
pastebin ldd -v binary_which_uses_libblah, might provide clues
what can I do to make dm-crypt not prompt me for a passphrase on boot?
the .so link is shipped in libblah*-dev package
remove the entry from /etc/crypttab
I don’t have one my root partition is crypted
hi
thought I’d try the option in the debian installer
you really don’t have a crypttab? even in the initrd? but anyway…with encrypted root you’ll have to input the passphrase some other way. which is up to your imagination i used an openpgp cryptocard to good success
i’m trying to enable radius auth by mac address using the debian freeradius package. i keep getting the error that clear text password is not available. obviously i’ve misconfigured something but there’s not a lot of examples for what i’m trying to do
well I set it to “” in the hope that would suppress it
the passphrase?
but it still needs me to hit enter on boot yes
bwah
use a keyscript
booting to single-user mode and running dpkg-reconfigure -a resulted in the keyboard not working anymore
is my initrd mounted now?
grrr
ok that’s interesting
ouch. usb keyboard?
no, ps2
uh…no, its a cpio
right. I just wanted to do this for the learning experience. Now I’m kind of tired of it. and I don’t know about initrd, or keyscripts, or anything like that
lol
ahh, ok then. go back to unencrypted / then
is that the easiest way to get rid of the prompt?
please ignore line 1 of my paste..
you could edit ./scripts/local-top/cryptroot in initrd, not sure what the correct way to do that is aside from that…just don’t reboot 5, 3 users, load average: 0.03, 0.04,
is there a way to see what files were deleted recently? or would i have needed an IDS
so… do I unzip the initrd, make changes, zip it up again?
not that i know of
i think that snort/aide would keep logs like that
dunno. its autogenerated AFAIK so making changes to it directly could be pointless if they get reset next time its regenerated and its not zipped
right. full install again?
umm
i would, encrypting / is fairly pointless
i thought the whole point of odt was that it’s NOT a memory dump like MS formats…
no need to encrypt /bin, /sbin, /usr…etc..
it’s not, it’s a zip file
i disagree
ah that makes more sense
most of it is XML, but not the PNG files and whatnot as that would be really inefficient
oh, why bother encrypting a bunch of files you can grab off a mirror? and that everyone [your isp, the mirror, everyone along the way] knows you’ve grabbed
since apps can leave temp files oh - heh - i missed the convo
well, notice i didn’t list /home, /var or /tmp
storing png as text can be almost-efficient if the text is utf8
well, I was just trying a different option in the installer
i though you meant encrypted file systems
if it’s left me with a totally obnoxious system
actually that would be nice… a new version of ‘base64′ encoding that’s for utf-8 text instead
then I guess I’ll reinstall the whole thing
i just walked in
and makes use of all the characters available
I’m just kind of surprised there’s no half-measures
its probably easier, use LVM though , and if you want to encrypt things i’d only go as far as /var and /home, and put /tmp on tmpfs then you can just edit /lib/cryptsetup/cryptdisks.functions and /etc/cryptab when you want to do custom things
why would you only encrypt /var and /home?
why would you encrypt more?
because that’s where people’s data is
why not all (except boot of course)
why bother with /usr? that’s all files from debian.org
because you have a performance hit
note that tmpfs can get swapped out
it also makes things more difficult, say recovering your system to a bootable state
maybe its just a personal pref to encrypt everything. thats what backups are for
encrypting everything is good if you want to prevent an attacker from tampering with the file contents encrypting everything is good if you want to prevent an attacker from tampering with the file contents bencrypting everything is good if you want to prevent an attacker from tampering with the file contents/b e.g. putting a trojan in your programs
they can still do that. /boot and the initrd are unencrypted
encrypting their trojan won’t change a thing
rahul, they don’t have the symmetric key to encrypt it with
but you do and you’ll encrypt it and write it
if you were to put a rootkit anywhere it would be directly into the kernel
what, so they take the system offline, physically access the disk and install the trojans, and then boot the system back up without you noticing?
rahul, no i won’t
seems pretty unlikely
then you wouldn’t do that on an unencrypted FS
cast, in an ideal fully-encrypted system the kernel is encrypted too
what package can I reconfigure in debian to change the authentication system?
you could always have /boot on a seperate volume (thumbdrive for instance) which is, hopefully, on you at all times.
cast, Dewi.. got the public key authentication working. the problem was the file format of the public key PuttyGen generated and the one that sshd expected are different. thanks anyway.
and the crypto is done in volatile hardware that’s destroyed under tampering
oh. yes. that’s why it has that export mode. didn’t think of that. dunno why it doesn’t use the normal format to begin with
apparently ssh 2 has a standard format which sshd does not follow and still uses ssh 1 standard

0am working on my linux 0am now and im just finished my 1st coffee and ok here goes it…i have hard drives in my linux box hda=/, hdb=swap, hdc=/home and hdd=/storage….i was trying all night to get my ide cdrom working on a sata port on my mb with this ide-sata converter anyone want to help me get it going?
ide-sata converter sounds like trouble
1 min phone
certificate authority
so SSL or TLS?
nah, why bother :p
you want to setup a CA right?
yes
install openssl
TLS or SSL both work with openssl certs, so..
/usr/local/ssl/misc/CA.pl -newca
* note that that CA script has some values you might want to change
you know how to sign certs? create them and sign them
i wrote my own CA in perl, so yah. i just want something that has features like revokation lists and, if possible, an XMLRPC api
back
openssl ca -policy some_policy -out foo.crt -infiles foo.csr ah ok why not go w/ openssl’s stuff?
its scriptability sucks, imo and as i need xmlrpc anyway, i thought i could just dump my stuff and go for off-the-web stuff
ide-sata converter sounds like trouble” well believe it or not i think im just one command away from it working….ex: in my bios there is a “sata enable/disabled and “sata rom boot” when i enable “sata rom boot” the debian installer actually makes it pretty far…upto a point where it says load cdrom-drivers
and i tried with other distros to…and they get part way
CA.pl is at /usr/lib/ssl/misc/CA.pl btw
so the dvd/cd-rom is working at beginning i think it just gets a wierd drive letter and it dont know where the cdrom is to mount or maybe i need to load a module that im overlooking so does anyone want to help me get this working cause i have no dvd/cd-rom and that computer and it would be nice to have one in it so does anyone want to help me get this working cause i have no dvd/cd-rom and that computer and it would be nice to have one in it http://www.abit-usa.com/technology/serillel_new.php i dont know if i have the version 1 or 2 im pretty sure i have that version 2 cause mine looks exactly like that picture
is Conceptronic C480i5 USB suported by debian ?
ok i dont even want to boot from the dvd/cd-rom anymore as i already have debian installed…but i sure would like to be able to add a cdrom to that box so i turned off the sata rom boot just left sata enabled
4 oops
thanks for you advice matey. I’ve got it sust now.
Conceptronic sounds interesting
Hi… Can somebody help with my /etc/profile… is not creating session var.. I read at some “foro” and looks like Im doing everthing fine
brb have to go into bios and adjust sata setting
abrotman, are u there?
ahci? the debian installer bug that doesn’t create devices in the same fashion as the actual booting machine kills the ability to setup a SATA RAID array spanning multiple controllers, what a pain. and adding devices from the new controller to a RAID 5 array afterwards is dreadfully slow
?
abrotman, hi…
did you export it ?
yes.. and restart session… Any Idea, what else should I look? abrotman, u mena, export from inside (/etc/profile) right?
yes
yes, I did it
paste it somewhere
it`s Xara graphics software for free?
you should ask ronin!

i just want to get my cdrom/dvdrom working with that ide-sata adapter….has anyone ever tried to get it working in debian
and i’m about to go get food
btw i seen a sticker on the adapter and it is this exact one http://www.abit-usa.com/technology/serillel_new.php

how can I increase screen resolution?
hi all, someone can tell me the name of the package who receive the login and password in the X interceface ?
in the debian kernel do i need to enable an option for it to boot my dvd/cd-rom using the ide-sata adapter
it doesn’t work like that
im using the default 2.6.22-2-486 in sid
i cant load an app… where can i look for logs related to it? syslog shows me nothing
/var/log you mean like gdm/kdm/xdm ?
does anyone know howto search in a directory over each file and change a certain word to another word?
xrandr -s
jetscreamer, my problem is, i upgraded an debian, and now I log in like root in the X, and when I stop the session, the machine frozen.
does it hang as $USER ?
Ronin, The owner of this machine likes to use the machine like root. But he just compile fortran softwares.
if he likes to use root let him fix it
heh that’s what i was thinking cast

If I have an IP address such as 10.3.2.50 and I want to change it to 10.3.2.150 programmatically using bash, how would I go about doing so?
okay so when rtorrent under lenny finishes a torrent, i get “junk at end of input” and it crashes. i can restart it and it runs okay, but when the next torrent finishes, it crashes again. since i consistently run as many as 80 torrents, this is something of a problem. where to look?
my sata rom boot in bios is not enabled currently
sed -i ’s/foo/bar/g’ * or some such
ifconfig
I just want to change the text
querybts, part of the reportbug[s?] pkg
read in an IP address from a file and write it out in a modified way by adding a 1 before the last octet
part of the debian bug tracking system, or the rtorrent one?
ask in bash, though sed, perl or awk may all have answers too i mean to say, check the bts as in bug tracker
cast i understand where you’re pointing me to. i’m asking which one you’re referring to (thinking that you already know of a specific bug report i should find)
BTS, debian
ok i generally prefer the web interface which is why i asked
reportbug is the package name, BTW, cast
ahh, roger i wasn’t refering to any specific bug, thats just where to look for such problems
MM anyone have idea to download debian in one DVD ?¿ 6 5 4 3 2 1

hi guys
oh, right. that’s new year’s.
hmm, i’m getting a strange error i’ve just upgraded to xorg 7.3 and iceweasel started to crash on some pages
don’t you know better than to talk to strange errors
http://pastebin.ca/695968 like this
7.3 is in the repos?
in experimental
then dont ask for help here
but the strange thing is that it doesn’t crash when i run it as
as
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/iceweasel/ /usr/lib/iceweasel/firefox-bin
maybe an nspr issue at least, nspr may be using features that you disabled when upgrading the X server.
I have many servers and many developer using the root’s user by dsa_key (I found this panoram) dropping in it a lot of temporary files.
146, base event: 95, base error: 169)
do you mean to say how many users login as root with PKI?
it’s not strange that it crashes; i would expect it from experimental but why the other way works?
try removing libnspr4-0d
uh, wait, i read something totally different. my bad.
ug, assbadger deps on it
cast, no. I don’t want them to log in as root but user and nobody has root’s access excepts admnistrator
rahul, a LOT of thins depend on it
!penixstrike nspr
A towering Penix descends from the heavens, knocking nspr to the ground and leaving a large wet spot.
well, you must have disabled something… why don’t you have x input in your X server?
? i didn’t i just upgraded all xorg packages
then why don’t you have it? xdpyinfo -queryExtensions and look for which extension has ID 147 erm 146
any thoughts on lvm snapshots slowing down disk io?
MIT-SHM (opcode: 146, base event: 94, base error: 170) ?
Hey I have apache running good and works on computers on my network but I want to be able to have it work on the internet how can I do that? I have already tried forwarding ports and not sure what to do
so i’m trying to do a source compile of the latest versions of rtorrent and libtorrent, since the upstream source versions are newer than the versions in lenny. i’m getting a compile error that sigc++-2.0 is not installed … but according to apt, they are, and the files are in /usr/bin. how do i get ./configure to see it?
you need the -dev package of them
ty
strange MIT-SHM (opcode: 145, base event: 94, base error: 168) you probably need to recompile … some … stuff … to get it to work again
145, base error: 169) now it’s getting creepy rahul, do you have any idea why running firefox-bin directly works?
shrug… I think there’s a different libnspr in lib/iceweasel that could be the difference pardon. must listen to project hate mcmxcix \m/ Ó \m/
I need a package from lenny in my etch installation - if it doesn’t have many dependancies in lenny I guess it should all work out right? Whats the easy way of adding it to sources.list
browneye?
backports is teh safest way
hello, can anyone tell me the prescribed method for changing libapache2-mod-php4 to php5 without uninstalling anything that depends on it?
specifically, http://packages.debian.org/source/puppet is the lenny package I’d like
just install it
s/prescribed/recommended/
do you mean backports.org?
yes
what does that do to the apache config? since apache can only have one mod php?
cool, never tried it.
install all the php5 stuff
ok i will give it a try, now that I think about it, since apache2 uses separate files it should just work.. thanks
it does, i had both installed for ages
Im trying to install compiz-kde with apt-get but it gives me this error: ¨compiz-kde: Depends: libcompizconfig-backend-kconfig but it is not installable¨ how can I fix this?
this is way cool: Package libapache2-mod-php4 is to be removed. looks like they really tested this
hrm, it’s not there it seems (this is for etch not sarge)
i should have just trusted the debian developers…
can anyone point me to a mode text browser that supports http authentication?
if your running etch, yeah, you generally can
w3m
yep off to double check that nothing broke..
and backports.org is set up for etch
thanks
right, puppet is just not there.
was about to say assuming of course its been backported
no worries
Im trying to install compiz-kde with apt-get but it gives me this error: ¨compiz-kde: Depends: libcompizconfig-backend-kconfig but it is not installable¨ how can I fix this?
which version of debian ?
I have a shell program that pops up a octave plot window once in a while and it gets in my way .. how do I make the window pop up in the workspace of the shell window and not the one that I am viewing at the moment? Im using GNOME
say how do i get apt-get to install dependencies automaticlly to a package i am trying to install?
it does that automatically it cant install a package without its dependencies being fulfilled
you might be able to configure your window manager to recognize the pop up window and place it on the right workspace sawfish and maybe the KDE wm can do that
yeh .. thats what I was hoping for … so the default wm for GNOME cant handle that?
I’m not sure what the default WM for GNOME is…
it only gives me an error that i need those dependencies
check devilspie
hmm .. what is the error you get? (paste here if it is not to big, else use a paste bot, see topic for the channel) thanks .. will check that out

Does anybody knows why compiz-kde needs the package ¨libcompizconfig-backend-kconfig¨ ?? The problem is that this package can not be found by apt-get so I can not install compiz-kde.. Who can help me to fix this?
done a apt-get update recently?
apt-get is just reporting the the dependencies are not available from the repositories it has in /etc/apt/sources.list or not installable rather.
apt-get has an annoying habit of completely losing its marbles if it gets an error part way through an install…if the initial state of packages is broken, apt-get refuses to automatically resolve anything unless you use ‘-f install’ with no packages and usually apt-get’s solution is to remove everything that seems broken (which sometimes includes all GNOME or KDE packages) aptitude has a really nice interactive dependency resolver
does anyone have better documentation than in apt_preferences(5) for pin types? ie. you see a=unstable as a pin, but can you specify by nickname, ie. a=sid?
wow, GNOME completely fails to start on an 8-bit display
ain’t progress wonderful?
Is Sawfish the default GNOME window manager or have I just got a borked configuration?
borked
where might I find the borkage? update-alternatives says Enlightenment is x-window-manager, of all things
is Sawfish default for a fresh user? if not, probably in the borked user’s Gnome Session settings
trying that now (although I can’t find a gnome session setting for WM choice)
ps. lol @ borkage look at the running apps in the session (in one of the tabs there) ie. i have a ‘metacity’ program running in the Current Session list which is the default wm
I’m trying to install grub - I’m chrooted into my environment from a livecd. if I try grub-install hd0, I get could not find device for /boot: not found or not a block device
is there a repository with the beta releases for KDE4 ?
The sessions tab lists /usr/bin/sawfish, but I already knew that…
i’m searching google but no luck
