how do I tell gentoo to start sshd at boot?
snarfer rc-update add sshd default
rc-update add sshd default
where are icons usually stored?
excellent, thanks
I think Opera’s a very good alternative.
tdr, yeah, of course.. it was more “does anyone know why they did that?” kind of question
well, apaprently it is ati-drivers fault. There is an unofficial bugzilla for it.
worch depends. you can look in /usr/share/pixmaps
And I keep it running for weeks on end.
add a -v to your emerge command, so it’ll tell you what USE flags are effective….
Zelest nope, it’s twice in 2 years they’ve done it tho
I’ve been gone from gentoo since 1.2.. and come back to get owned by expat..
hkBst, yeah, but it’s quite big, can you maybe think of search criteria that could help me?
So I could try it
Hi, does anybody use gentoo with a webcam for chatting?
its alot of packages, and alot of useflags. do i need to add all the red ones to make.conf?
Sure you could.
anyone able to help?
Thunderbird takes 1gig in my home, is it a speed concerns ? ( I usually never close it too)
yes
this is a xine/ogg problem btw
lufthanza, I can be insanely wrong here.. and I’m quite new here.. but tried revdep-rebuild?
yeah, nothing picked up as broken
ah, then I’m out of ideas
if you can’t find it file a new bug
what the qt-static use flags mean ?
i’ve also re-emerged libvorbis, libogg, and vorbis-tools
n0kia, which modules do i have to compile into the kernel, and what software are you using to let other people take a look at you?
now I’m gonna try to re-emerge xine
n0kia, since you have that nickname, do you happen to know what fancy things you can do with nokia n95 under linux?
teach Zelest expat
expat-2.0.1 is not ABI compatible with earlier versions. Run the following in bash to fix: “emerge -n1 ‘=portage-2.1.2.12′ portage-utils && emerge -qep world | grep –color=never -oFf (scanelf -plRBF ‘%F %n’ | awk ‘/libexpat.so.0/{print $1}’ | xargs qfile -qC | sort -u; echo -e “libtool\ncurl”) | xargs emerge -1″. If a specific package fails, “/msg mzbot faq remerge-deep” for advice (gtk+/pango are common).
no
hkBst, euhm?
which webcam?
n0kia, k, thanks though
That determines whether Opera has Qt compiled in or the local version is used.
or just keep on revdep-rebuild’ing till it doesn’t find anything anymore
hkBst, I’ve already done that.. I was more curious *why* I had to do it.
n0kia, its just a noname model, called starlight n0kia, this is the only brand name written on it
ABI changed
haha, doesn’t tell me much .. ignore my question though, I think I need to know more about how libraries and such works before I understand the question
Opera require QT ?
err, the answer*
Yes.
n0kia, I found now the v4l support in the kernel, I will use them all as modules lets see which one is getting loaded
is it a usb camera?
k
n0kia, yes please
almost ready to setup grub to dual boot, and try out gentoo for real
there is a command called ‘lsusb’ that will show you the chipset
should horde-webmail and horde be installed in the same dir?
011 ID 046d:c00f Logitech, Inc.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_binary_interface
So it must be a logitech compatible one i would say n0kia, which application are you using for chatting around?
your in luck the module is not in the kernel source its a package called ‘qc-usb’
oh, i see, and i have to download it somewhere?
its in portage
hkBst, I’ll check that once revdep-rebuild is done hkBst, still in CLI
n0kia, mh, fine n0kia, thank god, that you allready know everything+
I know
hahaha n0kia, ok, I loaded the module?
can someone help me with this problem? trying to emerge dev-java/sun-jdk error: http://mad.wipeout.no/error.txt
v2.00 registered new interface driver quickcam
emerge camorama to test it
n0kia, oh thank you, in my ten finger search mode i was to slow to ask for it
randoms try disabling the doc flag
heh, sweet. thnx tdr ^ ^^
should horde-webmail and horde be installed in the same dir?
tdr, how did you see that was the problem?
n0kia, for the compilation of camorama the kernel allready has to support v4l? which means I have to restart the system first, n0kia ?
randoms experience. enabling it global causes circular deps alot of times unless you build certain things first
oki, thanks.
if your qc-usb module loaded then v4l is in there no need to reboot
wd mybook works nice via lan
actually the module is called quickcam you can chaeck with ‘lsmod’
Syntax error on line 79 of /etc/apache2/httpd.conf: Cannot load /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_cgi.so into server: /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_cgi.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
got my ogg working again rebuilding xine-lib did it
how can I compile apache with mod_cgi ?
n0kia, yeah, but I can’t compile camorama
which module for creative x-fi? emu10k1? or are there custom ones
can you paste the error? not to the channel
muahahah
any chance anyone is familiar with dual booting gentoo and xp with grub?
10megs of old GWN’s in my gentoo email account I never use yeah the handbook is gentoo mikeq handbook
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml
ah
euphor][a, gentoo already supplies creatives driver?
k
n0kia, http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-580221-highlight-camorama.html its the same error described here
for audigy yes, unsure about x-fi
*loading it on laptop
c-fi uses emu20k1 chipset x-fi
ekiga is a good sip phone you can video conference with
euphor][a, AFAIK there is no free driver for x-fi
Is there a simple command line calculator program that does unit conversions like google calculator?
Hi, can anybody tell me what I need to do if libtool fails with ‘/usr/lib/gcc/8686-pc-linux-gnu/4.1.2/libstdc++.la’ when emerging some packages. If have libstdc++.a but not libstdc++.la. What the difference between these two and how can I build the second one?
bc
apparently last monday creative released a closed-source beta driver
n0kia, okay, I see, I would like to use the webcam with an yahoo user
how can I make it do unit conversions easily?
Pulsewidth, units
oh… unit conversions… nm
there might be a solution to, isnt there, n0kia
euphor][a, only for 64bit
not really only gyach-enhanced and ayttm have any yahoo webcam support
I am running amd64
bc, with a proper formula
on a core2duo
hell talk to #bash
Ideally I’d like something combining both bc and units functionality But as too separate programs isn’t too painful
euphor][a, http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=NjA2OQ
Visit www.bussamtal.se and www.alltplus.se
ta
there are good sip phones like ekiga and wengophone that will video conference but nothing but gyach enhanced to do yahoo and its a bit messy to get going
okay I see, I rather pick egika
salü
well y’know you can pipe stuff to bc
why can’t my gentoo mount /dev/sda3
shouldn’t be tough to make a little bash script
n0kia, which clients can you connect to if you use egika?
wich is the portage command that cleans outdated packages?
generic SCSI is enabled in the kernel that was compiled /etc/fstab is correct
is /dev/sda3 present?
emerge -av –depclean, heed warning
ekiga does sip and h323
n0kia, thats really fine, I have a new contract on the development of a openser billing and lcr administration frontend solution n0kia, so the softphone really comes handy
you can video conference with msn using amsn
stable portage version?
n0kia, this is another program?
amsn worked quite well for me
mh, i see
yes Griffon26
n0kia, is there someplace where you can find chat partners for video conferences?
what’s the error when you try to mount it?
I don’t know anybody having a webcam )
it mounts correctly hear but the kernel won’t mount it on startup
hi guys im having an issue setting my date/timezone. everytime i do date i get UTC and i want do change to EDT can this be done with the date cmd? man only shows me –utc
no not depclean
/etc/conf.d/clock iirc
n0kia, i cant compile amsn
done that still shows utc
n0kia, http://rafb.net/p/rMTQ4l49.html
did you set /etc/localtime ?
http://rafb.net/p/AbZTRq43.html @ zion and yes ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/Canada/Eastern/ /etc/localtime
and you don’t have noauto in the options, right?
this is an old issue. and everytime there is a timezone portage update things go nuts
then I am at a loss. you sure it shouldn’t be EST5EDT ?
tried all ways i could think of
im a newbi and im installing gentoo. i changed the USE settings in make.conf so i did emerge –sync and now it wont stop running… it seems as it is in a loop.. suggestions?
thats too bad
it just takes a while is my guess
n0kia, yes i find that too, the gentoo forum says that kopete might be an alternative to amsn
emerge –sync only syncs the portage tree and can take a while to complete.
but I would say, that I simply stay with egika or i am going to use skype n0kia, how do you like wengophone?
whats with teamspeak2-client-bin emerge package? doesnt seam to work at all?!?
looks even more dear to me than ekiga
what do you use gnome or kde?
+hkBst ehnvis ok maby its just to whait…thanks!
isn’t the ntfs3g the packages recommened for reading and writing to NTFS partitions?
n0kia, gnome for sure
ekiga will be the easiest to get working and it works the best
Hey
idunno…i personally recommend KDE.
wengophone works too but you have to build qt
Gnome is sometimes seems.. underpowered, and makes it hard to do stuff with
n0kia, but its also neccessary that it will work for the other people too, if I can point them to the wengophone website and its then running, i can be very fine
plus, KDE is more “windows-like”
KDE is more kindergarten like
hmm
[?] indicates that the source repository could not be determined — What does that mean? I haven’t used any overlays in months
yes, yes it is. But its easier for people not used to window mangesr
k0001, thats just because of the similarity regarding the first letter of the word kindergarten and kde ?
Hi, got a bit of a gentoo emergency here. Found make.profile missing so switched to 2007 version. Did update. Now missing commands such as df and rm
=P, that’s cuz it’s color-bloated
Oh and now got no disc space
what’s the output of: echo $PATH ?
horza, check if you have coreutils emerged or that
/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/opt/bin:/usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/3.3.6:/usr/i386-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/3.3.5:/opt/blackdown-jdk-1.4.2.03/bin:/opt/blackdown-jdk-1.4.2.03/jre/bin
http://www.openwengo.org/ a href=”http://www.openwengo.org/”http://www.openwengo.org//a
looks fine.
horza, do you have ls? ls /bin
I think coreutils died in the middle of an emerge No, I can’t ls /bin
Does emerge work?
what’s the exact error message?
echo /bin/* then
-bash: /usr/bin/ls: No such file or directory
That’s fishy…
do a rehash of your bash’s internal command hash It’s just that I’m not using bash, damnit… what was the command?
In Earthanese?
horza, run `hash’ I think that’s the right one
what are the features I’ve to enable if I want to continue an interrupted emerge? just keepwork?
hits command 1 /usr/sbin/etc-update 2 /usr/bin/qpkg 5 /usr/bin/df 1 /bin/more 2 /usr/bin/locate
njsg, emerge –resume
try hash -r
I’m a little worried as this is the production server that runs my business
fow, i don’t want it to start the compilation from the beggining
hash -r produces nothing
it doesn’t have to. type ‘which df’
/bin/df
ok. now try to use df and rm.
Aha diff worked Ok rm now works.
when my computer boots, there is a loud fan noise, louder than all my other fans. It stops about half way into the windows loading screen, but in gentoo it carries on all the time. any ideas what it could be?
is there a good tool to detect unencrypted wireless networks?
It seems I can’t emerge gcc because gcc is too old
tehdavid, Windows.
the noise!
err I misunderstood
what’s the output of gcc-config -l ?
when dealing with grub, does sdb1 translate to (hd1,0)? or just (hd0,0)
[1] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.3.6 * Followed by 10 more
np, I want to sort it out because its just annoying, im thinking it must be some sort of software thing, hence stopping when windows loads
w00t?
anyone?
[11] i686-pc-linux-gnu-4.1.1
you’ve got ten compilers? … wohoo…
Still too nervous to w00t yet
snarfer, (hd1,0) sounds right, assuming there’re no hd[a-z][1-9] and sda does exist
no, there’s no hda
how can I get my swedish aaoAAO to work fine in console? now, they seem to add two characters (on invisable one) .. and if I write “aaoaaoaao” on the console, and erase it, i can erase half the prompt as well (because of these invisable chars) .. why is this? and how can I solve it?
I’ve got my HD on SATA
your CPU fan most like
if you want a newer compiler, do something among the lines of gcc-config 11
http://rafb.net/p/BwNmKb48.html
so, do I use (sd1,0) or (hd1,0)?
hmm, when i check the CPU fan in the BIOS then with speedfan in windows I get the same speeds
note that I have fstab set up too, if that matters
snarfer, (hd1,0)
not everybody has the saem numbers
yes, that’s fine. Just switch to number 11
snarfer, GRUB doesn’t care what type of HD it is, but it will prioritize for PATA drives
but horza just told me his, that’s why I’m recommending 11
gentoo horza gcc upgrading
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gcc-upgrading.xml
Thanks Mantaar.
ok, cool
ok
im a newbi and im installing gentoo. i changed the USE settings in make.conf so i did emerge –sync and now it stop running but i got a lot of error that i didnt have enough space on device. can i emerge –sync and delete outdated files so i can fit the new ones?
I guess it could also be your graca fan…
echo $LANG $LANGUAGE $LC_ALL
What does `df -h /mnt/gentoo` say?
in the console, of coures.
sprocket, for safety reasons, emerge –sync gets the new files then deletes the old files; you’ll need to free up space elsewhere. Try rm -r /usr/portage/distfiles/* /var/tmp/portage/*
and does the root change from /dev/ram0 to anything else? or is that static?
err crap
maybe, I’ve got an nvidia card. I havent got X or any of the nvidia drivers installed yet. maybe that will make a difference?
sprocket, ignore what I said
Running out of disk space at this stage doesn’t bode well for the rest of the installation…
rej, yeah, missed the “installing gentoo” part
hi, could anyout suggest any reason why setxkbmap could return ‘Error loading new keyboard description’ while trying to change layout. All solutions which i found in google dated few years ago and doesn’t work well now…
@rej it says 12G available…
sprocket, did you chroot correctly?
Why don’t you paste the output instead of guessing what I wanted to see?
it’s worth a try, but you should also check your CPU powersave settings
Mantaar, I get one “en_US” Mantaar, but I want my system to speak english, but I want my characters to work properly
in windows or linux?
if I use gcc-config to switch to switch from gcc-4 to gcc-3 why do many KDE apps stop working?
!google gentoo localization guide
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/guide-localization.xml
^^^ linux
`mount |grep gentoo|` would be interesting as well./
hkBst, been there, done that.. fails.
@rej ok livecd gentoo # df -h /mnt/gentoo Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
how would I do that?
/dev/hda7 14G 1.4G 12G 11% /mnt/gentoo
let me guess. You’re getting something different in X and you’re setting your locales either via your X or .bashrc
I’m talking about my console
X works fine
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/power-management-guide.xml
If you were installing there, it couldn’t possibly have run out of disk space.
what’s in /etc/locale.gen
is selectwm the de-facto tool of choice to have multiple WMs installed or..?
So you’re probably installing in RAM right now and you probably forgot some mount commands.
would I want the AMD processor driver for linux? as is, the one from the AMD website
[?] indicates that the source repository could not be determined — What does that mean? I haven’t used any overlays in months…
Mantaar, “en_US ISO-8859-1″ and “sv_SE ISO-8859-15″
Could you check where it is that you unpacked the stage tarball you chrooted into?
bad thing you ain’t on UTF-8. I would recommend switching to UTF-8, but if you don’t want, I’ll tell you how to get it to work with what you have…
you should really setup utf-8
utf is a racist towards IRC.. and therefore not an option for me utf8*
gentoo Zelest unicode guide
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-upgrading.xml
Anyone around that plays WoW in gentoo?
Odd.
Zelest, UTF-8 works perfectly fine with IRC, provided other people are using UTF-8
rej, that doesn’t look right?
utf-8 works fine on irc. atleast with irssi.
fow, of course.. but everyone using mIRC or other clients, make it fail
got a link?
~/.profile
then re-log in
Zelest, mirc already supports utf8 so there is no problem
It does, actually. But it also points to http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/utf-8.xml .
Zelest, then tell them to switch
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_13118,00.html
fow, that just gives me more work
any recent mirc supports utf
preferably, I would only speak english..
@rej yes possible but i followed the installationguide and this is the 3 time im emerg –sync and the other times it went ok. (have been fiddeling with the USE parameters) and done a emerge –sync after ech change…
and btw. I’m on UTF-8 and nö Pröblëmß wïþ ÜTF-8
Mantaar, now that’s tons of ????? for me
does åäöÅÄÖ look correct for you?
@rej is there a way to se if im mounted on hd or in ram?
Looks fine.
I wouldn’t download it from their website. This isn’t windows
b0rked here..
looks fine here.
yes. yet another reason for you to switch to UTF-8
are there known problems with emerging selectwm-0.4.1?
we don’t do that tehdavid
however..
do you think it is in the portage tree then?
this isn’t my issue.. I think you missread my question..
you know that you can get irssi to translate to iso-8859-1 or iso-8859-15 for you?
Sure. If you’re in the chroot now, get out by doing `exit` (it’s no problem reentering later) and do `pwd`.
Grub is failing to install on my /boot parition on my harddrive, here’s what I get: http://pastebin.ca/719809
if I write å in the console.. then erase it, I can erase 2 characters..
have you tried to do what I told you above? I’m pretty sure, that would help your issue…
I discovered the INSTALL_MASK variable and thought ‘cool!’ … but it’s not working. I tracked it down to the misc-functions.sh script and, for whatever reason, the script is trying to remove files from the wrong path. Anyone familiar with INSTaLL MASK?
how are you on irc?
Mantaar, ah
~/.profile
What path is it trying to remove files from?
screen irssi.. and I think the machines in between uses iso-8859-15
and then re-log in…
Mantaar, k
And what path did you want it to not install files into?
you can tell ssh and screen to use UTF, no?
It’s appending ‘/image’ to the end of whatever the real path is.
luckz, no clue luckz, or, I changed that one back when I used ubuntu.. screwed it up both for windows and/or linux/freebsd
I don’t know, I guess it might be included with any cpufreq utility or even the kernel itself. But I’m not real sure. Maybe good to ask on the mailing list.
anyone?
Mantaar, nope, doesn’t work..
ok cool, I think I might try enabling BIOS cpu fan control and seeing what happens
well, my windows with putty manages UTF reasonably fine. I only still have problems with local network shares as I’m not sure which charset they use.
Hmmm … maybe I should dig a little deeper …
Mantaar, I can still erase two characters even if I’ve only written one
Could you show some of the output (there must be errors saying files could not be found)?
so what’s the output of echo $LANG nowL ?
INSTALL_MASK only works with filenames, not paths, it seems.
actually it seems the files it contains powernow-k8.c are already in the kernel sources
No, they’re being sent to /dev/null …
Mantaar, erm.. strangely, en_US..
well, the code is doign rm -Rf
so no you don’t need it, but you need to enable this stuff in your kernel
which shell are you using? bashL ?
right
so it should work with paths.
Should be setting LC_ALL, not LANG.
yeah
but I only have filenames in INSTALL_MASK
what, you say that one doesn’t need to hack stuff to bits to make it work?
And LANG isn’t changed by setting LC_*
works fine here with LANG
@rej i did `exit` but it said that i loged out and then it said /root when i `pwd`
but, LANG, doesn’t that make bash speak swedish?
is that how you interpreted what I said?
Er, so were you chrooted in when you did `exit`?
i didnt really give much thought to ACPI when building this kernel. I still dont know if these cpu things will make a difference to the fan kind of noise
you *need to enable* how?
it is one possible interpretation …
dunno. only ever use english and UTF-8 though I’m no english native. Try setting LANG and maybe LC_ALL as well in ~/.bash_profile
@rej what is chrooted in? (newbi)
well, I don’t want it to speak english
LC_ALL should be enough to fix the encoding issues. LANG has nothign to do with it.
somebody familar with openser under gentoo?
have you never configured a kernel before?
The Handbook mentions chrooting many times…
its said that there has been an ebuild but it seems to be gone I can remember that there have been portage alternatives
sure I have. but I took great care to disable powernow etc; also turned off in my bios. my system still exploded all the time.
I was mistaken … the temp directory in /var/tmp/portage has an image directory created and *that’s* where the files are being deleted, but they’re still being copied to the /usr/share/doc directory.
Trying to emerge system, will get back to you laaaaater
which is why this box runs windows 98% of the time. it works
why expect it to work if you turned it off?
I understand that. however, LC_ALL is empty on my machine, while LANG is en_US.UTF-8 and it works with devanaagari, arabic, kana and cyrillic…
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=6 Then doing `locale` should tell you what it defaults to.
i cant remember how they where called, and I on the other hand dont know if openser might be in there, could somebody please tell me how the riscy portage addons or alternatives are named?
@rej true but they as long as i am they just used it witout explination…
I want it not to work, I believe. I found it quite impossible to find reasonable documentation on the K8-specific kernel options, though.
LC_ALL=
empty
brb, laundry time
What does `locale` say, then?
IIRC my mobo manufacturer told me that powernow is a very bad idea in terms of system stability
maybe you should try something other then Gentoo there’e plenty of choice
mh?
phah, what does he know
All the others except LC_ALL should be set to something like POSIX.
not really POSIX, but they are set.
i`ve upgraded kernel suspend2 from 2.6.21-r7 to 2.6.22-r2, but uname -a still shows old version. Am i alone?
Yes, set to the system’s default.
hi
upgraded means emerged but not compiled?
i need some help with iptables
which is UTF-8. That’s why it works. and why I’m recommending it.
Sure.
no, compiled and installed to boot, correctly
I’d say the problem is that this box has a slightly questionable mobo chipset, thus only works well with very specific settings, and those I’ve used in windows for two years don’t let me successfully compile gcc. the lack of linux support for my x-fi arguably is a reason to not even bother. however my other comp’s gentoo I set up over the last week works fine, minus some E-CVS-specific bits. (nforce4)
how could i enable pakets from 10.0.0.138 to 192.168.1.102 and back for iptables?
I have gcc on amd64 trying to compile c++ code and its taking over 10min on a file, consuming 266MB … but on my athlon-mp it takes 1sec.
by the way, i think, LC_ALL has only _precedence_. If it’s not set it’ll most likely fall back to the other stuff. That’s why setting just LANG works.
any ideas how to fix this?
found that include/config/auto.conf have CONFIG_UNAME_RELEASE=”2.6.21-suspend2-r7″
Chrooting means that for the shell you are using, the / path is set to whatever you give chroot as first argument. So if that argument is /mnt/gentoo, it expects to find a shell in /mnt/gentoo/bin/sh or whatever you set as second argument, and, following the Handbook, that’s /mnt/gentoo/bin/bash.
slt quelqun peu m’aider svp
So you unpack the tarball in /mnt/gentoo, then do `chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash` to open a shell in the environment the tarball sets.
bugs.gentoo.org has *zero* entries about startwm?
@rej that link, i allready have done the chrooting acording to the manual steps. but i didnt know what i was doing and the man page is very short…Hmmm… could u show me the commands to see if im in ram or on the hd?
/join #gentoofr You could just follow the guide.
hi
As long as you don’t miss any steps, you should be alright.
could someone help me with that ln -s /usr/lib/libcurl.so.4 /usr/lib/libcurl.so.3 ln -s /lib/libssl.so.0.9.8b /usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.8 ln -s /lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.8b /usr/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.8 oops… sry
what exactly is your problem? btw, linking different ABI versions of libs is asking for trouble.
well, libcurl.so.3 cant be found by applications that need it
In this case, you seem to have missed a step. Going back and finding out which step is probably more work than going back to right after you unpacked the stage tarball and picking it up there.
have you had a look at revdep-rebuild?
hey guys.. I’m having some issues getting ssh to work with rsa or dsa keys, instead of using passwd auth.
emerge gentoolkit && revdep-rebuild
no one has experience gcc on 64bit systems using 99% cpu for a trivial cpp file?
takes a while, but it should get you back on track.
yes, i always revdep-rebuild with each emerge -auD world
teach zion about ask
Just ask, don’t ask to ask, don’t ask who’s familiar. Don’t ask if anyone knows about it. Just ask the question, it’s the easiest way to get people to answer
right, already asked the question… no answer. just getting desperate to solve it
Posting the “trivial C” on a paste site should help.
ok then. Did you do it right now?
should i allow etc-update to update kdmrc’s ForgingSeed?
no, ive got that problem for about 1 week now, and ive done revdep-rebuild several times since then, at first it fixed alot of packages but now it wont find any errors
You can do if you want. It’s not a particularly important value
well, ill try it again now
I’ve not had any problems either way
ok. what’s the app that’s causing the errors?
thx
this http://pastebin.org/3719 is causing g++ to consume 99% cpu and 200+MB of memory on amd64, while taking 1sec on a 32bit cpu
n0kia, could you please let my try to call you
What was the full command you used when compiling it (gcc options)
there are 2 apps i know of, the first one is planeshift, and the second one is ufoai, and i think they both got installed by installers that are not in the portage tree because there they are masked if i am right
@rej I did that but i went back to change the make.conf so i did the steps that i thougt was important that was afterwards in the manual(emerge –sync) to go on but i got the message that i didnt have any space. by the way i did a dispach-conf after last time i did a emerge –sync could that have altered anything. so should i just do a new chroot from the chroot-place in the manual and go on with the folowing steps?
g++ -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I.. -I.. -I/usr/include/mysql -I/usr/include/boost -I/usr/include/nspr -I/opt/include/oapr-0.5.1 -I/opt/include/oapr-0.5.1 -I/opt/include/oapr-0.5.1 -I/opt/include/oa-0.4.0 -I/usr/include -O0 -ggdb -DDEBUG -DIS_DEBUG -Wall -ansi -I/usr/include -I -I -MT db_create.lo -MD -MP -MF .deps/db_create.Tpo -c db_create.cpp -o db_create.o /dev/null 2&1
I installed ufoai from portage
planeshift isn’t in portage for good reasons…
check your pm
The best b2evolution web hosting.
oh crap
Hi, people, i wanna know how to make this the default $PS1, does you know how? $PS1=${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}”\[33[01;32m\]\u@\h \[33[01;34m\]\W \$ \[33[00m\]”
I think I see the problem… ignore me
you’ll need experimental versions for a lot of libs to get ps to run. Not all that easy, in fact.
What did you do?
hehe, i think this symlink thing i did before got me some errors, or whatever it was, revdep rebuild will really take a while i think. whats wrong with planeshift? it worked a few months ago…
those -I -I I think they are doing it just a guess atm though
are you using amd64 or x86_32?
nothing’s really wrong, but their insanely progressive standards are asking for too much maintanence to be keeping it ’round in the main tree. *maintenance… sorry
heya, does someone know where the option “Use PC Speakers for “Beep/Systemsounds”" is?
btw i am using a 64bit arch, maybe thats also important for eliminating my problem
pc speaker driver is under misc devices
n0kia, are you still there?
or at least plays a role, whatsoever
thx ill have a look
sure does. Unfortunately, I can’t help you that much as I’ve got no experience in getting recent ps to run.
yes
You should go check their deps on the site and find overlays/masked version of the libs and unmask that stuff.
okay
ps isnt whats really annoying me, i just want to get ufoai to run at the moment ./ufo: error while loading shared libraries: libcurl.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory — btw: thats the error i get
when i try to emerge world it claims “net-wireless/ipw2200″ and “virtual/x11″ do not exist. are there any name-changes and do i have to change the names in the world-file then?
i’m guessing you updated recently - revdep-rebuild -X to fix the library problems
Your problem should be trivial to solve then: emerge -av ufoai ah, and ditch that manually installed version of ufoai
or install a curl7.16.0
or is it really the same game? anyone?
though Mantaar’s last comments are better
hi, I can’t seem to be able to get more than 10MBit/s out of my wifi connection - It’s supposed to be be 54MBit/s
Mantaar, about laptops btw, you don’t happen to know how to fix widescreen in console, to get rid of those black areas to the left and right?
54mbit/s under a very very optimal theoretical study
hmm… seems like ufo-ai is hard masked… thats why i actually installed the current version from their homepage
10Mbit/s is quite good, actually.
just install it from portage then. shouldn’t give you any trouble.
both the access point and the card are 802.11g, and I limited the AP to 54MBit/s
MasterOfDisaster, I can’t even get my wifi to work.. stop complaining!
not for 802.11g it isn’t
current resolution 1400×1050, on my Samsung R65. Sorry, no widescreen experience here.
Yes it is.
hrhr
but if it wont give me any trouble, why would anybody want to hardmask it?
MasterOfDisaster, ah
Is your computer sitting right next to the access point?
err Mantaar, ah )
I did not say that it _won’t_ give you any trouble, just that it _shouldn’t_. Great Big Difference.
If so, there’s still a lot of interference from other electrical appliances.
I’m sitting ~20cm away from it
wasn’t you the one that asked about mounting stuff yesterday?
That’s probably too close.
*moving away*…
Try ~1m.
there’s so much wlan interference where I live that the datarate often drops to 100kB/s even if I’m in the same room as the AP wlan is getting useless :-\
Also check for neighbouring WLANs that might be using the same channels.
… could switching the channel help?
true… i always thought hardmasked things are hardmasked because they are expected to cause trouble… i dont really like trouble at all
Yes, that might help.
ACK. will try another channel BRB
I’m using quite a lot of stuff that isn’t even hardmasked, but not in the tree at all yet. I’m used to getting fine results from hardmasked stuff
Mantaar, yeah
lol, k, ill just look for the version they currently have, if the difference is too big, ill leave it alone for now, i think i am able to survive a few days without playing ufoai
remember that amd64 gcc problem? the extra -I were not the problem
you can look into /dev/disk/by-label/* - shows everything that’s connected. Then make mountpoints and fstab entries with user=you mountopts and gnome-whatever-mount-daemon should mount that stuff all right.
what’s a good average througput of a RAID-5 array? with mdadm
Mantaar, oh.. sweet!
Or you could just manually mount it, like I do.
Mantaar, thanks!
err software raid
again, you’re welcome. Just figured that out yesterday.
with 4 slow disks I get ~70M/s sustained
I wonder if my Xorg will even start when it’s done
it should be a small bit less than (number of disks - 1) * transfer rate per disk
then my previous setup /really/ sucked, and I’m glad I got a new controller, I doubled up from 45 MB/s to 90 MB/s
whats really going to drive me crazy is that my dvd-rw doesnt want to read from the doom 3 cd and thats making the installation pretty hard at the moment…
yeah, most controllers are limited … I’ve increased my throughput quite a bit by distributing the disks over 2 controllers
how do I make /boot a block device when formatting it?
errr? why?
that’s the odd part, I was using two seperate controllers, and now they are all hooked up to one
i’ve seen 170MB/s peaks on my raid5
same chipset
grub-install says /boot isn’t a block device
nice, what controller?
that’s because grub wants the boot DISK, not the mount point
pcie is almost a neccessity for speeds like these tho
(chroot) livecd / # grub-install –no-floppy /dev/sda Could not find device for /boot: Not found or not a block device.
ich7r ahci & sil24, both pcie
yeah, PCI 32 can’t compete
this http://pastebin.org/3719 is causing g++ to consume 99% cpu and 200+MB of memory on amd64, while taking 1sec on a 32bit cpu
neat, the nvidia onboard controller on my 570 chipset is limited to ~90M/s, the PCI promise to ~75M/s
thx for the help, ill try that unmasking stuff. do u know if theres some biologists channel on freenode?
sequential transfer doesn’t really mean much with a raid5 tho
sorry, I’m a computational Linguist.
hit it hard and it crawls no matter how you do it
where can i get a pre-compiled koffice?
I disagree, 4-disk raid5 has a very noticeable boost compared to single disk … not raid0 levels, but very nice
try concurrency and high load - anything is slow then
Thanks for your help @raj. Im in the process of installing gentoo. i just updated the portage (emerge –sync)
stripe align your file system, else every parity based raid level will suck in performance.
meh
how about 4 chroots compiling and I don’t notice even if 2 kernel sources unpack at the same time?
sooo (chroot) livecd / # grub-install –no-floppy /dev/sda Could not find device for /boot: Not found or not a block device. yeahhhh
atm i’m limited by 100mbit anyway
is there a simpler program than beryl? like the desktop effects in ubuntu ?
use grub directly
(vmwareing it)
I get a message after using emerge –sync * IMPORTANT: 3 config files in ‘/etc’ need updating. * See the CONFIGURATION FILES section of the emerge * man page to learn how to update config files.
grub-install is strange magic
how could i save my current iptables to a file?
dispatch-conf — use it
look at the init script, it does that
just to give you numbers, hw raid 6, 8 discs. unalign 90mb/sec write, aligned 370mb/sec.
+bonsaikitten dispatch-conf screws up my
dispatch-conf is EVIL … you have to watch it carefully
which init script?
nah, it’s quite benign
setup (hd0) Checking if “/boot/grub/stage1″ exists… no Checking if “/grub/stage1″ exists… no Attempt to access block outside partition
iptables …
/etc/init.d/iptables
oops.
it does some automagic for you
+bonsaikitten sorry hit enter… chroot … is there an other way..
I don’t know what you did to your system, but it doesn’t work
nice but i want to clear all the rules now! but test somth
what breaks how and why?
perhaps I didn’t use the right paritions I’ll need to start over
well, look how the init script does it and reuse that command
I need to paste my config files to save time
I tryed dispach-conf before and when i did a new emerge –sync becouse i updated some variables i found that i was not mounted but in ram.. dont know if it alters more stuff aswell… but i can try it if u think it is safe and chroot back to mounted hd… +bonsaikitten
whoa, one sentence at a time please …
+bonsaikitten hehe ok i try dispach-conf chers!!
hi, is there a way to run gparted as normal user ?
no
no, and for good reason. If you want to run it, but can’t try: gksudo gparted
what a good idea - lets let normal users mess about with partition tables!
lol i want to start gparted with an icon on my desktop.
Please disable public away announcements for this channel Wrong user - sorry Please disable public away announcements for this channel
mm ok, any idea why uptime says 2 users ? i am the only user right now logged in
root and you ?
no
really? who -pu
just me
i have 26 users
how many term windows do you have open?
1 boar 0: boar pts/0 ?
is there a way to make gentoo grab its distfiles of another gentoo machine on a LAN and if it doesn’t have it, then go download them online?
wiki AlfadorJanus portage sharing
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Setup_local_Portage_and_Package_Mirror
is that normal ?
w00t, figured that was, just didn’t know what it would be called or else i would have googled.
you can share distfiles via nfs, even writable (but only do so in trusted environments)
is it normal to have 2 users ? i mean in kde it says 1 user
seems the crappy D-Link Router is to blame
always
D-Link and linksys are cheap plastic
could i just add my distfile directory apache?
if I place as UFS partition at the beginning of a disk, GRUB can’t find partitions beyond it. Is this a GRUB issue, or something else?
And your recommendation is?
since i already have apache installed and setup?
yes, that is possible
Oh good.
I bought it because it was cheap web hosting - but I at least expected Fast Ethernet support…
not sure … even zyxel doesn’t work well anymore
is there any way to get your system to play a sound upon a kernel panic?
perhaps it’s because of the port forwarding… Or crappy firmware… Or it’s just a huge pile of steaming poo, this router…
for example, i want it to play one of the screamin’ beans screams when my kernel poops
I guess you could make it beep
Like… “Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrghhh..”?
YEAH! WOOOOAAAAHHHHHHH it would be SO FUNNY
You’d have to put the sound in the kernel image though
instead of kernel panic, just make it read “not today sucker”
why don’t you make some other host ping your system and play the sound if no response comes
is there like a gentoo-wiki post
Well, depending on what you mean by “sound”
i could convert it to whatever sound type i needed chithead’s solution wont work when I am roaming it’s a laptop it would be so funny
kernel panics is not really a good time to mess around with doing things
yeah, i guess not, but it would be really funny
such as playing sounds, because you simply do not know whats up with the sound drivers
http://www.thebluething.com/media/Screamin-Beans you should at least check it out
on the other hand, numlock does blink during a kernel panic so I guess you could wire a small beeping device to your numlock led. =P
i guess so but it’s only funny if it starts screaming, you know, like a paniced scream
How can I change to a user only see his own processes?
I think one of the pax/grsecurity patches has that feature don’t recall
ah
Might want to consider a virtualization solution as well.
well I want to to make it easier to read “top” .. i’m the only user
Oh… there are options to sort / filter processes in top, I *believe*. In fact, it’s `top -u user`
oh heh, silly me.. thanks! and sorry for being too lazy to look it up
np
Is there any kind of virtual file system you’d “bind” or something to a folder which would provided some level of caching for file/folder queries? (I’m not entirely sure of what I’m looking for, but I’d know if I found it…..such is life…)
What are you trying to do overall?
Basically avoid having a system spin up all its drives when a netatalk connection is made since no matter what I do, netatalk stats the volume paths to see if they exsist (the nostat option appears to do nothing, or at least not what I want) which results in ALL the drives being woken up, when the one that’s usually connected to would have already been running anways (this is an archive host)
hello all, do I need the directfb use flag if I’m running Enlightenment desktop env?
drbombay[lap]: do you want support for directfb?
probably not since I have no idea what I would need it for [R], you still there?
no i died in the 2 minutes since the last time i spoke
/mute [r] bwahahahAHAHA
that would have been more evil if it did something.
I’m having a problem with cyclic dependencies when trying to emerge kde or gnome, or any larger package for that matter..
can i remove a package from the world file without unmerging it?
I don’t want to be any more evil than I already am
show us it
yes
fair enough
just make a backup of the worldfile before you edit it
[R], pastebin the output?
“/var/lib/portage/world: It’s worth more than you think. Save the world”
that might be a good idea
hello, what time does it take to rebuild a typical desktop system on a modern hardware?
somewhere between 3 hours and 15 years wanna be more specific?
[R], http://pastebin.ca/719913
you have gnome/gtk useflags on?
I’ve tried googling in my spare time during the week to try to find what to do to workaround but its been mostly unsuccessful
yeah, i’ll refine `typical desktop’: it’s all the base apps, plus Xorg, KDE, OOo
kojiro, yes, sec
will you settle for oo-bin?
try removing the gnome and perl use flags for graphviz
no, I need streectly build-from-source time *strictly
with oo from source and kde-meta it might take a full 24 hours if everything goes well longer depending on resources and your own savvy
is there anything smarter than menuconfig to do the kernel build configuration with?
oldconfig, if you have one
smarter?
a 3 ghz dual-core cpu with enough ram and a fast disk could get this done in 6-8 hours
not with openoffice thats 6-8 alone
smarter as in…I don’t know, more clear behavior when saving/loading a config file
clean? define the problems, not random stuff that makes no sense oh CLEAR lol still makes no sense
of course you would have to hack the OOo ebuild to not strip out distributed make flags
nah you mean olegfink and no, that will just make it break
yes, sorry
trust me, I tried it OO is just a beast
OOo developers brag all the time about their quad core machines and how fast they compile OOo
sorry for that noob question…but the windowmanager..is it xorg or kde? i assume xorg…but not sure bout it
hello
mm
in the case of kde… the window manager is called kwim kwin* xorg is the X server
chithead: thanks. To say all the truth, I’m not going to build it in any foreseeable future, just needed to estimate some things about package building and thought #gentoo is a right place to ask
i just compiled the new 2.6.22-r8 kernel, and i cant set up fglxr driver may somebody help me
[R]: so that enlightenment thing is like kde…?
enlightenment is a window manager… like kwin
Quad-core? That’s so 1999.
hello. we’ve downloaded 2007.0 livecd installer iso 64 bit and started the installation on a turion laptop. the installation hangs at perl-5.8.0-r2 (50/116). Anyone can tell me where to look why it does that? CD is clean
you are using the installer? that is your reason
http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/xwtf.html — dipht0ng: difference between a DE and a WM
its crap
[R]: great :/
[R]: Please don’t bash the installer.
but it *is* crap
anybody else who have problems with kernel 2.6.22-r8 and fglrx ?
mayeb you could show us the errors…
so just scrap the installer and do it manually, or what?
[R], I’m getting less circular dependencies this time http://pastebin.ca/719919
yep the installer sucks :/
/o\ great, thanks
modprobe fglrx ——— FATAL: Module fglrx not found.
np
there is no error while compiling ati-drivers
stupid garbage… turn off the python ruby, and tcl use flags for graphviz also it says that WHILE compiling? oh, no error your /usr/src/linux symlink is wrong
yea, you are true thx i`ll fix it now
[R]: what if filterbox were to just manually –nodeps build all the stuff in the order given with USE=”-*” and then emerge -uDN world wouldn’t that resolve the cycle?
[R], you are god
It’s finally compiling
or that
I didn’t know that that stupid package was causing all the problems, my googling skills need work.
thats quite evil
maybe ot but…somehow my other account here is banned….who do i need to call for undo this?
[R]: :-D~
kojiro, Ive seen something similar to that fix in one of the mailgroups but it didn’t specify exactly what to do
er?
Seems like a costly solution.
join #freenode
i just started at the first error and was gonna work my way down… the first error said there was an issue with graphviz pulling in swig, so i just told it to stop doing that
it is, but it’s likely to work
You would need to add –update –deep too.
i mean in this channel…
eh? -uDN
/join #gentoo-ops
join #gentoo-ops
thx
Oh right.
how could I kill a process ?
man kill
kill/pkill
eregi, you can top to view pid list then just K and the pid# eregi, if you’re in X and a windows frozen you can also type in xkill in a command and just click on said window
or, depending on your desktop environment, press Ctrl+Alt+Esc
quit
Hi guys. I am making the curious transition from KDE to GNOME for some reason, and I was wondering if their are any GTK apps that support last.fm (as a suitable replacement to Amarok)
has anybody an ebuild for deskzilla-1.5 (the latest portage ebuild is for 1.41)
thomask, too questions, synced lately, and if it is THAT important why don’t you make one yourself, safe somebody the trouble. two*
yes I synced about 2 hours ago
thomask, good. then I suggest the second option!
you could file a version bump request to http://bugs.gentoo.org/
chithead, and spoil his ebuild creation nightmare? you’re no fun.
NK|Knoppix; this might help .. http://dieter.plaetinck.be/the_perfect_gtk_music_player_can_exaile_replace_amarok
why does the sleep timeout for hdparm not seem to work for me?
the problem is that deskzilla is closed source and its changelog is … well not very detailed
could some application still access the disk? swap maybe?
Its set to 1 on a drive that’s unmounted, the only thing I can think of is the fact that the drive is on a PCI controller, not a built in one, but hdparm -y DOES work on the drive
NK|Knoppix; incidentally, you might find a gtk player to replace amarok, but what will you use to replace k3b?? ;p
chithead, Its only got one partition which isn’t mounted, the system is booted off a completely seperate drive (which also has swap and boot on it)
lysdexic, graveman… simplier, yes, but it does everything I need to do in k3b respect.
or haldaemon still periodically checks for media changes on the drive…
ah ok, I had never heard of graveman
thomask, what does it do?
Would ther ebe any problem with andhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128053 gentoo?
wasnt around when I used Gnome
haldaemon? it isn’t mounted, how could the media change?
you know hal, that automounter thingy
its disabled (and stopped)
shouldn’t be, Intel stuff tends to be well supported. Avoid using any PATA ports it may have though, the chip that provides that (A JMicron usually) is notorious for bad open source support
hmmm…lets see if it makes a diffrence weather or not its set during the startup of hdparm or not
Exaile it is!
LSD`: PATA? As in IDE cables?
yeah
erm I have an ATA HDD/DVD Burner
Latest Intel chipsets don’t support it natively so they rely on an external chip time to chuck it out and go SATA :/
but on my current mobo I have PATA
what’s your current mobo?
Is it a problem with that specific gigabyte mobo?
but the chip controlling the IDE port may not be part of the chipset (even though it is physically built in)
Biostar P4M80-M4 @ LSD`
nope, it’s the Intel chipset on it. All of the boards based on it are the same: no native PATA support
I have a VIA chipset afiak LSD`: I didn’t buy the mobo yet. So I should avoid all Intel chipsets?
VIA and nVidia haven’t killed native PATA support in their latest chipsets yet afaik. It’ll happen in due time though. easier to just buy an SATA burner
and my hard drive?
someone asked me if i would like to have gpg inline or mime encryption for a mailing list. i use evolution as a mail client and there s an option S/MIME. is this gpg mime?
LSD`: I’m confused
no, s/mime and x.509 stuff is something different from pgp/mime
ok so it seems i have to use another mail client for gpg mime?
is there any problems present when installing gallery2 with gentoo-hardened?
support for gpg inline is fairly common in mail clients. for pgp/mime there are only few (thunderbird/seamonkey with enigmail, claws-mail, pine?)
There’s nothing to be confused about. The ICH soutbridges attached to 965 and the x3x chipsets have no native PATA support in them. Any PATA ports on mobos sporting said chipsets are provided by a secondary PATA (and eSATA usually) chip, usually made by JMicron. These JMicron chips aren’t supported very well at all by Linux meaning if you want to run fedora linux on one, you’re better off making sure all your drives are SATA
any ideas how audacious should play files which are protected via .htaccess?
hi is the P35 chipset supported?
LSD`: Thanks for clarifying 3
should be, but as I’m explaining to Rictoo you’ll want to make sure all your drives are SATA
Okay two questions… what kernels support Core2? was it 2.6.21? and… is there a way to list what files need to be downloaded for a certein install?
you mean password protected? http://user:pass@site.domain/path
all recent kernels support C2D
chithead, yes. ok.. can it do also “globbing”?
bonsaikitten, alright… and my second part of the question?
nope, the drives still won’t spindown for timeouts…any ideas?
hmm, emerge -pf lists it in a bad format
dunno. you could use a proxy that can do authentication
LSD`: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121046 That mobo doesn’t even mention a southbridge
all Mobos currently have a southbridge. At least consumer-end mobos… or did I miss something?
A 946 board should predate the PATA purge but it’s still last-gen technology
way too much work for a home server-streaming.. i’ll find a way
hello everybody, how to remove a file befinning with - please ?
escape it or surround it with “s
how can I get 1440×900@ somthing better than 51 hz refresh.. i still see a flicker .
thanks
on my lcd
bonsaikitten, yes… very bad format.
you shouldn’t get flicker on an LCD, they don’t refresh like LCDs do
lcd should default to 60hz if you have the correct driver etc on xorg.conf
are you using a DVI cable?
well im seeing a pluse like pattern
you can also do it like rm — -filename
however… it could be useful… if there wasn’t so many!
xrandr says 1440×900 @ 51hz Modeline “1440×900_60.00″ 60 1440 1504 1536 1760 900 903 906 912 -HSync +VSync
what desktop are you using can you check the hz frequency
xrandr says 51
ah modeline = old school
why do you want to know? and is emerge -pv enough?
bonsaikitten, I need to manually download for the moment.
so what is a good HorizSync VertRefresh setting for 1440×900 lcd?
60Hz is pretty standard for LCDs
using the modeline made it atleast somewhat useable
you shouldnt have to provide it.. use Option “DPMS”
even with VGA?
on my box dpms puts it to 75 Hz which I *don’t want*
Has anyone successfully complete the gentoo virtual mailhosting system guide?
LCDs don’t refresh the same way CRTs do
i know but what am i seeing then? im sober too.. swear
possibly artefacts from not using DVI
thats a really old motherboard get something with newer chipset
he wants native PATA
why is revdep-rebuild not emerging without version?
-X ?
bonsaikitten, that option doesn’t exist anymore
err?
app-portage/gentoolkit-0.2.4_pre7
not using dvi shouldn’t cause problems like that ive run both dsub and dvi no problems
the new revdep-rebuild doesn’t have -X anymore how do i get it to not give me the version?
yea thas wack if using vga will make this prob.. i understand lcd vs crc tech and refreshing hsync vsync coils lcds dont have.. but this is strange
hi everyone.. im making a gento fileserver with only ftp on it. im wondering if i should use the multilib profile so that i am running ONLY 64bit libraries and apps, or would that be a bad idea. do the normal ftp proggies work well as only 64bit?
I installed compiz but I don’t have any frameborders anymore, someone who can help me solving that ?
you are mising emerald
hello. Iam trying to get my gentoo system working with a grml live cd after upgrading my system from a amd64 system to an dualcore intel cpu with the p35 chipset. Booting up grml, i cant get my eth working to emerge a kernel to compile a new one to boot gentoo..i should have the 8111b realtek LAN chipset. Any idea ?
I have emerald
xored, you prob be better off starting with a whole new system
are you using fusion-icon i know that owrks cuz i use it
why should i.
cnsidering you totaly chaged archs
its gentoo. i only need a kernel and a complete world emerge recompile..its not windows.
bonsaikitten, that was easy… commented out… added for i in to front and then ; do wget $i; done to the end of the line and wala… it’s running
“voila”
Hi! emerge just gave me an interesting error. Apparently, poppler-bindings depends on one version of poppler, whereas cups depends on another and an emerge -uDN world wants to pull both. It suggests I mask one with package.mask. So, I added ‘=app-text/poppler-0.5.4-r2′ to /etc/portage/package.mask but I can still emerge =app-text/poppler-0.5.4-r2 afterwards. How do I properly mask this package with package.mask?
and … err … good
Why is this happening, anyway? This has never happened to me so far…
fusion-icon [R] .. I also have emerald, bbut when I select a theme my theme doesn’t change :s
if your apps are optimized for amd, they won’t work on intel is it running?
[R] yes
xored, dmesg say ne thing about the ethernet card
bonsaikitten, I bet if windows people ever had to do something like that they’d be kicking themselves about now. hehe
in grml… seems more grml prob though.
[R]: sure they wont, the are compile fo k..i will recompile them ofc..but i will not reconfigure the whole system, thats stupid says eth not ready what processor do i choose for the dualcore pentium ( 6750 ) ?
don’t be too quick to dismiss the advice, when changing arch it gets hairy
xored, yea ur right about new kernel and world, sounds like it should work.. but if grml isnt workin the eth card.. id say just go grab a gentoo minial chroot in, change make.conf
iam chrooted as i have the kernel sources i dont need eth right now..i will get the kernel working first.

which arch do i choose for the dualcore ? ( never had one yet )
hi everyone.. im making a gento fileserver with only ftp on it. im wondering if i should use the multilib profile so that i am running ONLY 64bit libraries and apps, or would that be a bad idea. do the normal ftp proggies work well as only 64bit?
NM … unmasked poppler-bindings-0.6 so it’s all good now.
pentium-m ?
xored, amd64
Has anyone successfully complete the gentoo virtual mailhosting system guide?
for the intel dualcore ?
xored, i think the real secret is SMP in the kernel.. and as far as make.conf and arch types depends if u want to go 64 bit or not
hi everyone.. im making a gento fileserver with only ftp on it. im wondering if i should use the non-multilib profile so that i am running ONLY 64bit libraries and apps, or would that be a bad idea. do the normal ftp proggies work well as only 64bit?
xored, yes. for the INTEL dualcore… trust me on this… gentoo is just too lazy to change the arch amd64 to x86_64
smp is activated of course
b14ck, heard you the first time!
fine.
sorry, posted it again so that i could correct an error first time i said ‘multilib’ and i meant ‘non-multilib’
hi, could I expect to see any new soundcards supported (OSS or ALSA) in the new kernel version?
pure 64bit works well
sfmasa, depends on the sound card…
hmm now iam quite asking myself, which network driver i use in the kernel…realtek 8111b chipset
ty
is there a way I can re-merge qt 4.3.1 to get the docs but without recompiling everything?
NK|Knoppix, its a newer Intel ICH8 i believe
sfmasa, and it doesn’t work under hda_intel?
In gnome how do you get defualt icons off your desktop? Like the Home Folder icon.
NK|Knoppix well I havn’t gotten it to work with either, I tried compiling alsa from source and now i’m trying built-in oss drivers (all the required settings between the two have been checked). maybe i’m just not seeing something
you probably want to look at using ebuild command to get docs unpacked and moved into place
