If the parent company chooses to provide produces under a /different name entirely/, then there must be a reason to do so.

as anyone who’s ever had to make an industrial-strength network using linksys gear will tell you

http://www.theregister.com/2007/07/30/cisco_linksys_canned/

For example, cisco might be knowingly making crappier products and selling them as linksys, so as to not crap up their good cisco brand.

that’s right.

Yes, they are different gear. Linksys stuff is designed for consumers and Cisco stuff is more business/enterprise oriented

what is a one-word definition of `almost identical’?

similar

no different

hm comparable?

a one-word definition of almost right?

What’s a biologists word for a static, unchanging system? dead.

linksys == shiznit

tabris|away lol

If Cisco is Linux friendly you could expect the same from Linksys though. Which is kinda the whole point

I’ve had so many problems with linksys shit being buggy as hell

isn’t linksys linux web hosting based? at least some models

we can install linux on cisco router 2600

Some of it.

bluequijote can you?

Guerin, well… more real is the mathematical definition of “nearly everything”

hey folks i have a debian question

right, you’re onto it. If it’s not the same, it’s not the fucking same.

I see on a weppage

hey miss

Not neccessarily.

i would like to build from sources but i also REALLY like the whole .deb phenomenon

let me look the webside

Guerin, the definition of “nearly everything” is “everything except a finite number” IIRC

misspiggy just got for it

can i build a .deb package from sources?

misspiggy unless you are really building something special

Well, considering that the whole discussion was started by someone asking if Debian supported his Linksys NIC…

!dpkg source

dpkg source is, like, in dpkg-dev

python 2.5

Sisk that’s irc misspiggy mmm

what determines what happens after I enter my user/password in gdm?

Sisk btw that guy is gone long ago he he

Heh, yeah, true. I haven’t had much time to get on IRC since long before I switched to Linux.

trying to compile python 2.5 modules?

i built 2.5 but it didn’t include readline or a bunch of other modules - but we addressed that on #python yes and python 2.5

why not do apt-get install python2.5

That figures LOL

latest python package i could find was 2.4

from debianized sources? trivial. from not-yet-debianized sources? that’s what debian packagers do

install with apt not manually

geo - sources from python.org

delete your compiled python and apt-get it

is there a 2.5 in stable?

no

heh, stable

there is 2.2 for stable.

you mean 1.5?

i can’t figure out how to get apt to locate packages not in stable i’m obviously an idiot

there are backports, or you can switch to unstable

Or testing

or even to ubuntu which has nicer python2.5 packages

!sid evangelism

hmm… Sure, run Sid all you like - do as you please - just don’t advise inexperienced users to run unstable as their main Debian install. If you do, you get to help them exclusively, and #debian gets to curse your name for ever more.

well, considering your name, you are probably very intelligent. pigs are very smart, actually.

misspiggy is a nickname

that’s how it works on irc

and i am not a miss

missnickname is a piggy?

dogs aren’t as smart as pigs, clearly

lol pigs are clearly more intelligent even that two-leggeds

obviously i need to change my nick to something like “butch” or “packageman” or something

so you’re married with children?

Ugh…Ubuntu…of the half dozen or so distros I’ve used that’s the only one to ever crash when I wasn’t doing something stupid.

no

because my website is pigsnpets.com jk…

i know some guys that aren’t really as smart as a dog…

giggle

not to mention pigs

if you aren’t a `miss` yet name implies a `miss` i guestion your sexual confusion.

i have waded my way through so much online documentation i thought it might be nice to chat with some real live human beings for a change

i recommend d4rksh4d0wn1nja for great g33k 1337n355

LOL @ Guerin

brb\

this may come as a shock to you, but nothing you read in irc can be taken as true

why do you think so?

that is why i am nothing but fallacy and a lie.

The greatest truth I’ve ever seen in IRC

you say that, but how do we know? etc.

the greatest truth is a pure steel lie.

it only happened ONCE that someone here mislead me

once that you figured it out

Just do a /nick with a more appropriate one, piggy.

truth is negated by the beauty in the elabortion of a fallacy that is lie.

how is piggy more appropriate than misspiggy?

what is wrong with pigs? they are very intelligent.

Guerin hm nope, because i always ask simple questions that can hardly be misleadly answered

this is my first time on irc and already i have guys hunting me down doing DDoS’s on the channels i’m on so if they show up here don’t say i didn;t warn me

Indeed, you should tell Guerin that

don’t take it personal

i experienced my first pornado

Guerin and there are usually 3-4 people answering… if they say same thing… why not trust irc?

i don’t they’re losers

I recommend you remove the ‘miss’ part of the name, at least, so that your name isn’t obviously female.

pornado?

why?

sounds like fun

remmeber. pigs have red eyes and can red really well….

Pornado….sounds like a good way to have my fiance pissed at me.

I was hoping to find a pornado.. I’m riding around morgantown right now connecting to random wireless networks

Hmm, in this new context of the conversation, I think I should back out.

or on the other hand you could change your nic to missmodel and really get hammered

so far havent found any sharing files :P

how do i change my nic?

lmao nvz

it just did it on its own

Type in /nick yournickname

do not change your screen name just because Guerin said so. that is offensive to Guerin.

I’m a little worried about ssh into my box from unknown networks

it’s a well-known rule that if you want to get help on irc, change your name to LisaLOL69 or something and ask cute questions

you’re whipped

all the gullible lads actually think you’re a chix0r and flock to help you

I can’t find the website, but I read that somebory in the ulinux project installed a router 2600

shoot it was supposed to be butch man in drag

If you had my fiance, you’d be whipped to

then allow ssh and stimulate your ssh i guess.

Guerin kate23 works better

Then again, I’d have doubts if I didn’t believe that.

I shall never recommend someone to change their nick again.

are you sure she wants a whipped man?

i just noticed why my cd-roms won’t read my dvds… i guess i’m really gonna need floppies :P

maybe she wants whipping but the eyes are red and deceitful. so let those eyes stay red and deceitful.

Not completely whipped, but then I’m only about 90% whipped, so I think I’m ok.

earnest no cd-rom will read a dvd.. trust me :s

i totally trust you on this one

he he

but…

if you are whipped a nap usually gets you unwipped. probably 4 hours would suffice.

I JUST FOUND BLANK CDS i guess they’re blank so damn… this is my lucky day

do they look blank?

they do

do a checksum on the blankness.

just check again and you could have some fun with fresh asian pornado

Heh, I’m not whipped till she asks me to do somethin.

hehe a sum on the blankness?

ahh, a blank check

that sounds hard

so anyway

well, let me download a brand new copy of debian

then you are whipped 24/7 and probably need to step away.

just so you know… you don’t need cds

Speaking of new copies of Debian, does anyone know if the netinstall works over wireless?

if i want to build from sources that are not debianized what options can i pass ./configure or make in order to make it compliant with the way debian does things? ot where can i find that information?

having one netinst cd is handy tho

*or

if your wireless is a Linksys, yes.

this question has a VERY large answer

Not Linksys, but very Linux friendly. Orinoco

ok geo

why 3 dvds? http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/4.0_r1/i386/iso-dvd/

is there someplace more appropriate i can find the answer to that question?

is that all packages?

Orinoco rhymes with oreo so take your chances and maybe it will work. go ahead and be risky. what is appropriate question you need to ask”

I’m just being lazy…don’t want to plug my laptop in while I’m installing.

what options to pass configure & make in order to be compliant with where debian puts things

http://www.us.debian.org/devel/

i need cd-1.iso only, right?

then go ahead, Russia is not going to blow up your computer.

And I REALLY need to get this thing back to Debian.

thanks geo

Yup. What is it on now?

or just a netinstall if you have a good net connection

E-Live….it’s Debian based but the user friendly parts of it are driving me insane

geo-rge: nah; i still need to see if debian will support my nic

whaqt nic?

geo-rge: and my download is currently good: 133KiB/sec it seems it’s a linksys usb nic dont ask me the chipset as i dont even know what a chipset is

best bet is minimal install cdrom not nfs because then you will be stuck in emergency.

Debian will work with all the hardware that any other distro works with - but you will likely need to do alot more work to get it to work.

why a lot more work on debian?

Arafangion i am not arafat and that is a lie.

Because Debian is more pedantic (for good reason!) with respect to non-free, binary-only, and non-free drivers. What?

Because Debian’s slower to merge stuff into their repository….generally that’s a good thing

that’s fine if my nic doesnt work, i will return it and then buy this asus someone suggested which will work “for a fact”

Debain, even if `testing` installs beter in this year than MandrakeUbuntuRedHate combned.

http://www.sureneeds.com/wl167gv2.html

it seems you’d need some sort of usb networking support

Meh, I guess worst case scenario I have to carry the laptop across the room and plug it into my router.

pls do not advertise in a help channel.

im not advertising

how does one get a list of all packages whose installation was explicitly requested by the user?

you’d have to be using aptitude all the time to have a chance of getting that info

if our isp allows do a .255 broadcast maybe you’ll catch some .isos of custom systems if you work hard enough and make friends, electronically.

Electronic friends? Nowt here’s a concept!

I might be back later. Probably not, given the time now.

love those convobots

there is no such concept. it is a lie and is fallacy of the 5th degree.

this is two-way, non-paid

and i luv the athritis in my hands that doesn’t have boccilism.

I disagree - but such friends cannot be depended on.

hi gn00b

boccilism?

infection of plastics. yes they can. ask Linus.

Linus’s friends are not purely electronic. Those friends you’re refering to have some root in reality.

there is no root in electronic friends. it is all fallacy and lie. uthere is no root in electronic friends. it is all fallacy and lie./u demote to 1950s typewriter for 6 months in impoverished area for dictator and you will digress

I’m actually savnig for a mechanical keyboard. Probably the Daz KeyboardII. Simply because it’s the cheapest such keyboard in my country.

URL: ibm model m off of ebay.com will solve your dilemna, ref modlem.org

Shipping is expensive. Specifically, it costs more than the price of the most expensive second hand keyboard one can find. (Definetly more than $40 USD shipping alone) Though, the Daz keyboard ain’t cheap either - but at least it’s USB.

oh! speaking of USB keyboards my stupid computer gives me a message at bootup saying there’s no keyboard

and press any key to continue?

Disable the keyboard check for the bios, and keep a spare crap keyboard around.

eh linux finds it so it’s not a big deal just takes a while to boot up

I didn’t know lexmark had keyboards.

no. only SPARC. hi rhavenn2

how to know process is running in kernel space or user space

easy way is to use ps… anything not exclusively in [] is userland [lockd] — kernel thread, knotify [kdeinit] — userland process

Are my drivers ahci.ko and ata_piix.ko built into my kernel or just modules? See http://paste.debian.net/36089

lsof |grep -i substr

modules unless you built them in

simonrvn:thanks..but for init it is like init [2]..is it in kernel space?

no

grep /boot/config-whatever and find out Y = built in

the 2 means it’s in runlevel 2

M = … guess

hi, how can i remove the packages marked rc ?

M means not installed? (sorry, smartass moment.)

i mean on dpkg -l

close… N .. :p

Heh

oh joy - gpg key works again on the security server … wonder what happened there

simonrvn:init is process which is controlling for all user space then when normal process is doing syscall then how init is handling ..bcoz init is laso 1 user space process

yes, and?

What got seperated out from the Lenny package for Synaptic that it needs to show the installed/marked/not installed icons?

can somepne help me for .deb packaging ?

!tell .deb

init doesn’t handles system calls for other processes (AFAIK) !nmg

rumour has it, nmg is Debian New Maintainers’ Guide, Debian Policy Manual and Debian Developer’s Reference are the documents you need to read, in that order, to make packages for the Debian project. http://www.debian.org/devel/

^^^

simonrvn:i want ask that how init is taking care of syscall even init itself a user space process?

simonrvn:

man init already

Eh, nevermind. It must have been in the dependancies of something I just installed.

is it possible to make swap partition within LVM? thanks

nanotube, aye

easily

simonrvn:1 more doubt..running program is process then driver /module which is runnig is also called as a kernel process?

if you use swap within lvm will it effect the swap performance?

hello guys, i just apt installed telnetd. now how do i stop the service. Thanks.

lvm is another layer of abstraction … does it effect the performance of otherpartitons too? :-)) thanks

ps ax

/etc/init.d/telnet* stop I think except if it’s started from /etc/inittab hm

no such etc/init.d/telnet*

ls /etc/init.d/telnet* does that give you anything?

nothing

and grep telnet /etc/inittab

still, nothing but the service is up

So I have a server with slackware on it that I want to switch to debian, and since it’s just a bunch of drives, I don’t have a CD rom in it. I want to use the instructions for installing from an existing linux, but I think they are written for installing debian alongside another linux hosting distribution and not *over* that distribution.

prolly in inetd

yeah…ithink so do u know how?

it’s started via inetd usually IIRC

stop inetd

Is there any way for me to install over slackware over the net and alos write over slack?

or use inetd-update or whatever tools there are for inetd

edit /etc/inetd.conf and restart inetd

gotcha.ok

haha… inittab inetd… well, it is obviously too late for me…

butr you should uninstall telnetd anyways

!debtakeover

debtakeover is, like, Debian Takeover, the next phase of Debian World Domination, is a script that will substitute Debian (woody, not sarge! i need telnetd because ssh is slow

eww thats a terrible reason

this is no reason

telnet is insecure

hehe yeah i know

I used sshd on a 486-133 just fine. what do you run? a Z80?

:P

ssh? Slow? I’ve never noticed a speed difference between it and telnet.

Me neither

only time it’s slower is when connecting

yea, i just tried telnet. no difference

only time it’s slower is when your face is conecting lol jk

thanks wols_

thanks guys

hi to all…is running kernel module or driver is a kernel process?

you make no snese, restate your question

parse errore ” is a kernel” expecting ” “ you make no sneaze :p

wols_:running programm is called as process then if any driver e.g parport_pc is running then is it kernel process?

no

wols_:why?

cause #debian is not for homework

is there a good version of basic for debian? wols_, depends on how slyly disguised the questions are :P

“good” and “BASIC§ might be considered mutually exclusive

i know i know. but i miss it. on dos you could make it do all kindsa beepy sounds.

!start a scripting war

and python doesn’t do that, neither does ruby. or any other language foo without significant overhead. i can say “sound 400, 1000″ in basic, and it’ll know what i’m talking about. python’ll just barf.

look at bwbasic or gambas

beep

bywater basic tries to hard to be ’structured’ … i want a basic with goto’s.

run gw basica in FreeDOS then

!dosemu

hmm. i wonder if it’ll drive the speaker as well.

try it as see (yes, it does)

!upnp !udp

extra, extra, read all about it, udp is User Datagram Protocol - a thin layer above IP to send individual packets to other computers. Unlike TCP, UDP does not “set up a connection” in advance, and does not make any effort to verify that packets arrive at the other end

how does one enable it in debian

hmm. this is ppc, things are differently behaved.

udp

just out of curiosity, what do you need udp for?

jetscreamer, isn’t it already enabled by the client/server?

streaming

warez

casting, HN5

torrent?

yeah

huh?

thanks guys, bye

really no need to use it for torrent

i think AIM uses it. can’t be sure.

but.. thats just me

udp is suited for any transmission where you don’t care if the other end got every packet

gamez

streaming is a classic example

lighting control is another

udp is just a bad idea imho

by not caring if the packet got there, the overhead to use it is drastically lower

true

multicast tcp ?

you miss the point tcp has handshaking with every packet udp doesn’t

yeah, rhetorical question

but 2007 we don’t have much problem with bandwith

depends where you are

so overhead isn’t that much of an issue

i have a problem with 30mb pissmeoff

it does works just fine

*should* have fun upgrading stuff…

But I do need the nvidia-drivers. Debian-way installs the same drivers?

yes… ish

yes

not the latest usually, but yeah

I need em for double monitor

the debian way wrapped the installer so it has a little better control of managing it so it’s more compatible with upgrades and such.

l&o is so 2004

but it’s an old laptop

lenny is not released

no this is 2006 or 5 season17

does debian do a decent job of autoconfiguring X yet ?

Isn’t 2.6.21-2-686 for AMD 32bit?

no 686 is intel

ah

k7 is amd

depends on the amd cpu

nvidia does have anice installer though ???

hi every one

stupid bwbasic doesn’t have sound or play or even screen.

2 AM) zl2tod: HN5: unstable gnome broke for me a while back … been using kde ever since | i do think I like KDE better

why might I not be able to ssh to my box from where I am? I was across town earlier and got on it from some randome insecure wireless.. now I am back at home and I can ssh into another box then into mine but for some reason connecting directly times out

hi how do i preserve hard links when copying files from one disk to another?

I have installed a debian 4.0 on hda9 and now I have copy that to partition hda1. my linux is forking fine. I have make a kernel .deb file using kpkg. now when I try to install that kernel than in grub it takes partition as hda9

cp –preserve=links ? found that in man cp but i’m a newb so

for where that kernel takes that is hda9 not hda1?

preserver=zll all CAiRO-

right now I am using putty and going through another pc to get to mine, two ssh connections.. I don’t understand why I cannot connect direectly

what’s the command to download and install xwindow?

ok, thanks, i’ll try it

!install x

or xorg

xorg !xorg

to reconfigure.

!get xorg

X.Org is in Etch but not in Sarge. xserver-xorg replaces XFree86’s xserver-xfree86. updating x-window-system-core/x-window-system on Etch will bring it in. for X.org on Sarge, ask me about xorg sarge

ehh

!xorg hn5

apt0get install xorg doesnt work apt-get install xorg, i mean

!xorg

to reconfigure.

!get xorg

X.Org is in Etch but not in Sarge. xserver-xorg replaces XFree86’s xserver-xfree86. updating x-window-system-core/x-window-system on Etch will bring it in. for X.org on Sarge, ask me about xorg sarge

What do you think that says? (Hint: xorg != xserver-xorg)

???

You probably want x-window-system, though.

ok ill try apt-get

And use aptitude instead of apt-get.

Couldnt find any package whos name or description matched x-window-system

What repos are you using?

repos??

Repositories.

i want to install from a usb stick for whch i followed the documentation from http://d-i.pascal.at/, and created the usb stick

how do i tell?

but when i am tring to boot with this usb stick, its showing a message MBR 1234FA and stops , doesn;t boot further

/etc/apt/sources.list should tell you.

says permission denied

Yes… It’s a system file.

right.. lol . so how the hell am i supposed to open it? uright.. lol . so how the hell am i supposed to open it?/u

!bite Rhoruns like dpkg opens you

i’m sorry guys..

Are you aware of the concept of a system administrator? Do you have system administrator access?

show us sources.list at http://rafb.net/paste

hello everybody

yes. i know what an SA is, and im logge din as root i should not have to log in to see this file if im already root

cat /etc/apt/sources.list !pastebin howto

i heard pastebin howto is step 1. open web browser. step 2. go to http://rafb.net/paste step 3. choose ‘plain text’. step 4. select text for input, and paste into input form. (ask someone if you don’t know how). step 5, click “Paste” button to upload. step 6, select the url in your address bar, and paste that url here.

how am i supposed to paste it if i dont have xwindow installed?

Rhoruns you could use screen or gpm

what are those?

In any case, which version of Debian are you using?

Rhoruns screen is the most useful program ever made, gpm allows you to use the mouse in console for copying and such

hay, for no apparent reason, all of a sudden i cant do something as simple as watching stuff on youtube.com, it complanes about java or flash and ive reinstalled both

the lastest netinst install

Etch?

i dont know. i just know it was the most latest one from 3 days ago

Rhoruns 4.0?

Ok, your first assignment is to go and find out.

alright then, tell me how.

does it say etch in /etc/apt/sources.list ? we’re trying to establish you’re using etch still, right? !tell Rhoruns -about grounding

tell me how i can view sources first. and i can give you that information

Rhoruns less /etc/apt/sources.list

A security policy in place prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient, see message bus configuration file (rejected message had interface “org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume” member “Mount” error name “(unset)” destination “org.freedesktop.Hal”). So i found this line in a file called /etc/dbus-1/system.d/h

section end policy user=”0″

less is not a command

Rhoruns cat, more, pico, vi erm, nano, not pico you’ll have cat =p

you’re not making any sence.

does any one know how to fix my problem

so i add my user to the plugdev group but nothing changes, so i would like ton know, if i had too add him to the powerdev group too

Rhoruns use one of those instead if you don’t have less

4.0 r1 etch

hi all —how to enable hibernate?

Arafangion what’s the difference between “xorg” and x-window-system

Couldn’t stat source package list http:// ???

!find bin/s2disk !find s2disk

x-window-system is a chunk of unixy code. It handles drawing graphics on the screen and doing desktop-environmenty things, xorg is one such implementation of said unixy code shunk

my repos?

Kevin`: One exists, and the other doesn’t.

Debian Search of ‘bin/s2disk’ (1): (/usr/sbin/s2disk) in admin/uswsusp.

Kevin`: The one that does work, however, includes xserver-xorg

deb http://security.debian.org etch/updates main contrib

Arafangion both exist on my system..

(/usr/sbin/s2disk) in admin/uswsusp.

deb-src http://security.debian.org etch/updates main contrib

dpkg your slow today

Kevin`: Cool. Anyway, dpkg said to use xserver-xorg and x-window-system, but did not mention xorg by itself.

are my repositories correct?

Do you have any other repositories in there?

nope that’s it

Rhoruns no, you shoudl have more then that

alright then, tell me how to add more.

remember those commands from before? try nano

k, im in the sourceslist with nano

what does it mean to ’stat’ something, when running apt-get?

http://kwzs.be/sources.list is mine. use a mirror close to you. you don’t need contrib non-free

!tell Rhoruns -about sources.list

where do i fidn these sources?

google debian mirrors

!tell Rhoruns -about mirrors

(quickest unless you remember the url) or have a dpkg bot, heh

i really wish things werent this difficult just to get a couple things working

stat? anyone

you don’t have to try. you could just give up. or suck it up and reach past the learning curve.

man stat

i’ve been using linux for 3 years, and i still not have not gone past this ‘curve’ you speak of

Rhoruns why didn’t you select this stuff when you installed?

i did

did your network not work, or something?

for no apparent reason, all of a sudden i cant do something as simple as watching stuff on youtube.com, it complains about java or flash and ive reinstalled both, nad still have the same problem, does any one have any suggestion ?

hmm … status….ok…

i dont know..

Rhoruns if you selected desktop in the installer it would have given you a graphical login, and if you did the netinstall, which you did, you should already have an entry in the sources Rhoruns it would have told you..

I have installed a debian 4.0 on hda9 and now I have copy that to partition hda1. my linux is forking fine. I have make a kernel .deb file using kpkg. now when I try to install that kernel than in grub it takes partition as hda9

unless you just pressed enter without reading things

from where that kernel takes that is hda9 not hda1? I am installing using dpkg

harpal boot/grub/menu.lst part of the code for dpkg is in ‘comments’, so read through it

for no apparent reason, all of a sudden i cant do something as simple as watching stuff on youtube.com, it complains about java or flash and ive reinstalled both, nad still have the same problem, does any one have any suggestion ?

DavidProck1981, disable noscript ?

zl2tod, how

DavidProck1981, firefox ? iceweasel, whatever

ya, its iceweasle

Kevin`: I have changed that boot/grub/menu.lst and changed partition to hda1 in /etc/fstab. but when I install kernel than it update that menu.lst and put there hda9 insteadof hda1

harpal you shouldn’t have to be specifically installing the kernel package btw, just run grub-install appropriately. at least that’s how I would do it

I have a pc with only an empty harddrive (no cd/dvd). I can boot from an USB key with SLAX on it. I would like to in stall etch on the HD. Can I run the netinst from SLAX?

red logo, bottom right hand corner ?

harpal did you read through the entire file? like I said, the information for what partition to use is in a COMMENT

no I havent read that Is it in menu.lst?

yes # kopt=root=blah with a little bit of text above it saying what it does =p

ya I have # kopt=root=/dev/hda9 ro so its taking it as hda 9 right?

yes

Kevin`: thanx a lot

Alright, I’m trying to use debtakeover to move a slackware box to debian, and when I make debootstrap, I get the error /dev/MAKEDEV: no support for generic-generic Any ideas?

kevin`:how to enable hibernate?

? Anyone?

amol I think you just need to install the package that has the suspend utilities (I searched for it before, scroll up). comes with the “laptop” stuff on install

kevin`:but i am not using laptop..then also is it require to install all stuff of laptop on my system?

I don’t see why not, although I believe there is a debian USB boot and install howto…http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch02s02.html.en#id2530967

amol you should just have to install the suspend stuff

you can use debootstrap

Hello, I have a lot of files like rfile-wwwX where X is 1,2,3,4 etc, but using ls rfile-www* it does not sort by number, any idea how can I do it?

kevin`:thanks ..1 more i am having doubt ..running program is a process then running kernel module or driver is laso process?

Kernel modules are not neccessarily processes.

amol not all kernel modules create processes. some do

They are uniquely privilaged. Kernel modules can, infact, do just about Anything.

in process or thread terms what we can call to these module?

not to mention the noisy laptop fan

Alright, it seems my makedev issues come from the debian makedev being significantly different than any other distro’s. the question is, will it completley screw my slackware (that I’m trying to turn into debian, mind you) up if I build and install the debian version of makedev?

if you are running a linux server with lots of people connected to it running a variety of services, how can you list what users are using what service?

you can use smbstatus to learn about users connected to your samba server

aye what about vsftpd ?

DustyBin, depends on your setup, and on the service in question. i dont think there is a single command that lists up what users are on what services for all the possible services in debian, for shell you can try who, for processes running as a user you can try ps aux for other services there are their own tools

depends on the service. pop3/imap clients would be logged in as their own user, unless it’s virtualized

ok thanks

and the accounting package can record who runs what, and how much cpu time it used

I have two computer with two gigabit nework cards. One is always running they other one only for file storages. I got them connect by one cable. The problem is now that it works sometimes and sometimes it won’t. It won’t estabiles a link then. Only if i reboot download server the link works. Is this fixable?

are you using static ip addresses?

Dustybin yeah it’s in the link up , link down. If i wathced dmesg i get these message spamming allaround the place

you need to check your syslog and give more detail on the error

Dustybin what was the command again for that?

is the switch autoneg? full/half duplex mismatches? speed mismatches? cable intact? proper wiring? syslogs should be in /var/log

Supaplex|roaming no switch, everthing is on auto , both the same chipsets and a new cable which worked …

what’s the physical topology of the cable? how long is it?

try: tail /var/log/syslog -f

Supaplex|roaming cable is a normal cat 5 kable 2 meters long Dustybin syslog also give the link up link down messages

could anyone recommend a command line driven cd writing tool what is capable of burning a .ISO

not a cross over? just cat5, not cat5e or cat6? What does your nics require? !tell DustyBin -about search

i have apt-cache search but there are lots to choose from

Supaplex|roaming no tried crossover didn’t worked. the normal cable worked. Because somebody told me here a gigbit nic doesn’t need crossover cables anymore

ahh ok. try forcing them to 100mbit for now. your cable is either insufficent, or something is flakey about the driver/chipset/system etc if the problem still shows on 100mbit, the cable isn’t so much the cause (provided it’s not utter crap etc)

Supaplex|roaming well it worked twice with good speeds. only if i reboot or shutdown one machine they won’t connect anymore

gigabit ethernet uses all four fairs so crossing them over just confuses things; choice of cable is less critical for short cables; have you looked in /etc/networking/interfaces ? auto eth0 ?

cdrdao. wodim

hello all at the moment the samba daemons are not starting on boot how would i schive this?

it’s not the settings everthing is auto and one is aloow-hotplug but that for internet connection

*achive

dhcp ?

ok thanks

Supaplex|roaming well just rebooted to try something and it works again….it’s like russian roulette

dpkg-reconfigure your samba

what kernel and nics are involved?

Gaidin, make sure they are installed, check the logs in /var/log/samba/ then update-rc.d

ok

Supaplex|roaming kernel 2.6.21-2 and realtek nics

i will ned step by step i am new to ‘nix *need

dpkg -l |grep samba

next time, try /etc/init.d/network stop and then start. I hope they’re better than the 8139 variety

ok

don’t knock 8139s° great NICs!

and if need be, unload the driver after stop, and load it again. do you know what module it is?

Supaplex|roaming there 8169 chips

no ug there are about 5 lines pastebin it? or just semi flood?

some of the earlier ones are poor at best. but the 8139c series as after are better

first letters each line are “ii”?

http://rafb.net/paste

indeed they are ii

nm my driver comment. it was a misdirect.

I probably never encoutnered pre-c ones I guess. and true, they are shitty nics, but: they work everywhere and if they break, they’re very easy to replace

and if need be, unload the driver after stop, and load it again. do you know what module it is?

ok http://rafb.net/p/U2xUxc28.html

I have a whole box of the 8139C+

ls -al /etc/init.d/samba

Supaplex|roaming no clue but something is telling me this isn’t a driver problem because on a switch they worked perfectly….

but I’ll use intel etherexpress pro (the modern ones) before I’ll use a realtek.

5 “

ls -al /etc/rc2.d/S*samba*

interesting. if you know what driver is it, modinfo can show you some alternate paramaters you might be able to use for tuning

../init.d/samba

../init.d/samba”

then stamba gets started on bootup

odd

ps aux |grep mbd

cause i had to manually start it

Supaplex|roaming yeah but like i said ..i think it isn’t in the driver, got a feeling the chips can’t see each other sometimes

http://rafb.net/p/YmUpwx75.html

great. lsusb is stalling. wtf.

well, right now samba is running obviously

yeah i just started it

morning.

morning

check syslog if there any errors on samba startup

Supaplex|roaming well it works again ….if this doesn’t work i buying a switch…:-)

samba also has its own logs

ok where is it located?

like all logs in /var/log

lsusb stuck in “D”

is there any way to change the way iptables log?

ok

there are some things. what would you like?

be more precise please

woah

what do you need to reading USB for? besides it should just work.

what am i looking for in that mountain?

samba logs. “mbd”

yeah. colorize and make .html.

also, the “mountain” is ordered by time, helping you to isolate it

there is alot

I just don

heya GreaseMonkey

I just don’t want it to log to /var/log/messages

http://rafb.net/p/4R0xMb16.html

‘lo

for one, I have no ethernet. I’d like to swipe some files off this box, so I have a usb stick in it. I’m sick of this so called compatibility the industry tries to convince us of…

Moin!

so have an automounter and write a bash shell script that executes whatever you want done when your USB is loaded…over NFS?

what good is nfs if the ethernet isn’t responding?

BTW how can i see if the nics are indeed on gigbit speed?

three options (I haven’t researched this deeply at all). edit /etc/sysctl.conf or readup on the iptables logging options, or consider syslog-ng. good luck

is there a tool that can write a timestamp in front of each line on the console. eg when you debug a mailserver by telneting to it. and you want to have time information present in the log

NFS isn’t ethernet ONLY, whatever protocol you are using to communicate, doesn’t NFS work on that protocol, or no? and if it doesn’t native, can you not emulate NFS over ethernet with some type of USB automounter that executes what you need through a BASH shell script?

Ranpha1, try ‘tail -f /var/log/syslog’ then connect the cable

How to build my ahci driver into my kernel? See http://paste.debian.net/36096

zl2tod doesn’t say the speed here

I can’t even get usb working locally. I think it’s related to the ethernet not responding well. kernel messages suggest the ‘mp table’ is buggy

check w/Synaptic, i had a similar prob. you might need furtther UDEV/hotplug support or something.

syslog also says ‘controller might be using the wrong irq’ (paraphrase) when it senses the stick on the usb bus

check for (1) legacy usb support and (2) of that related former UDEV/hotplug automounter support pls

hi all, is there a kernelpatch or something to change the way the Text is displayed in boot (without splash)??? I want more colors like in gentoo.

hi, i’m looking for a simple to to inventor hardware and software on a debian box simple software

hi. attempt framebuffer for your console, is what Gentoo OS did.

huh? it was running the latest etch updates as of 2-3 weeks ago. the former system died, but I’m using a different motherboard. no pci cards are installed (to eliminate any possible hw conflicts)

tweaking your BIOS IRQ assignments might help you. or doing opposite and letting autoassignment. whats the issue with your new board and IRQs?

sorry i don’t understand what you arer trying to tell me ? framebuffer is activated

bios was reset to defaults

usbv1 or v2?

1.x

Gentoo OS is modified kernel framebuffer support you can try dpk-reconfigure xserver-xorg and go from there.

ethernet is trying to use irq 0. yes, that’s a confirmed zero. bios won’t let me assign the irq for it. disabling ethernet seems to have no effect. just as disabling onboard scsi has seemingly no effect. but I’m not using scsi, I’m using ide, which atleast is working fine.

why should i modifie my xserver,… i don’t think it has anything to do with the console at boot up ?

modify your BIOS to only USB v1 and modify your kernel for USB v1 then check all USB related packages to understand only USB v1 and not v2 *only* such as UDEV/hotplug. i suspect its kernel related if its that bad. ok.

what is the package for apache2 cgi ?

Synaptic will tell you, RTFM.

!synaptic

extra, extra, read all about it, synaptic is the Conectiva APT front-end, uses the WINGS toolkit for the GUI, see http://www.nongnu.org/synaptic/

yes it gives me 200 matches

huh??? oh nm.

do a substr search in Synaptic for “apache”

i dont use synaptics bah

then try “apache2″ !dpkg apache !dpkg apache2

hi all i am trying to create a bootable usb using which i can install debian

you’re using usb to install to whatever, right? btw, is windows installed already?

c0rnd0g, what is debian default menu.list ? Supaplex|roaming, yes

/boot/grub/menu.1st right?

c0rnd0g, thats fine, but i am talking about the contents of the menu.list

www.goodbye-windows.com might be eaiser. but yea, i-g covers using usb to install from. (provided it’s not the target to)

ugh, confused, bbl

and no, it won’t wipe out windows unless you want it to.

Supaplex|roaming yes i have followed the steps exaplined in i-g, Supaplex|roaming, using syslinux, but i couldnt’ secceed in it and stops so i changed the documentation today morning and tring with grub methosd Supaplex|roaming, c0rnd0g so when I used this http://www.mayrhofer.eu.org/Default.aspx?pageindex=6&pageid=45 documentation, for creating a botoable usb stick and palced the debia iso image in the stick, it should kernel panic error, and could not find the root filesystem error has come

sarge is stable now?

no idea, i only test it on ubuntu, dbian and fbsd 64bit working only in fbsd 64bit

“Status:Bogus” sarge is oldstable. etch is stable

yes, but look at the date? ive been trying to seek the solution almost 2 years

Hmm.. is oldstable an apt-get word?

!wayytd Faithful !wayttd Faithful

What Are You Trying To Do, Faithful?

help please..

tht “bug report” clearly tells you what to do

Hi

My sarge repositories are saying there is a KEY error… which is new…

I have a slight problem with timezones on this etch box

those aren’t sarge repositories pastebin your sources.list

I have the correct timezone in /etc/timezone but some apps aren’t picking it up. They are reverting to UTC

do you have network on that box?

yessir. I’ve update-rc.d -f ntp remove’d though, if that’s what you’re htinking?

JosefAssad why not ntp or ntp-date or ntpd?

hm, as in running those?

yes. its not a bad idea really…

http://pastebin.org/1639

from his description, his system clock is alright. it’S the timezone that is broken

well, I did have ntpd running but it didn’t fix the problem. Though, I _did_ fix /etc/timezone _after_ disabling ntpd, so I might try re-enabling it

sarge doesn’t have an apt-get dealing with keys (secure apt). so I dunno why you have this problem. it shouldn’t exist

anyone have been working with debian 64bit and php5-cli?

my thought was you had “stable” in your sources.list but it’s “sarge” explicitly

further, shouldn’t whatever is in /etc/timezone propagate to user logins? I assume that the user only needs to set TZ if they happen to be in a timezone different to the system?

why didn’t you do what that bug report suggested?

i’d run it and broadcast as much as possible really. what i do. think of it like identd yet more standardized and open

brother, its been almost 2 years w/out an answer

Well, when you asked about the network, I might have misunderstood. This is a single box, but it does have an internet connection

that bug report suggest to compile php with -O1. also, this bug report is NOT 2 years old. 2 years ago there was no gcc 4.1.1

i did it with apt-get, not from tarbal

why do you need the 64bit part? there really is no difference btwn 32bit and 64bit at this point unless graphics related i’m thinking

well it was because the box was set to testing/unstable and someone must have run apt-get

I suggest you upgrade to etch, current stable anyways

it was setup when sarge was testing.

!tell Faithful about sarge-etch

better math?

imean faster server than 32bit

that is both BS

my cpu is 64bit yet i not dare run 64bit kernel, etc

well it depends on the workload but generally it’s not true

ive tested mysql on 64bit and 32bit,, a big differences

the main reason is to easily address 4GB. that’s all

and webserver in 32bit and 64bit

i let the instruction set emulate 32bit and take the hit due to lack of stable integration of 64bit CPU on the OS level

makes no sense either. linux is fine on 64bit esepcially on servers

i only install it with apt-get

and it stops booting here,

so you didn’t do it

thx, so that will basicly create a new irc server?

you mean i have to install it with tarbal?

no I didn’t say that

when i am mounting the usb, tis under /dev/sdb1, and thus in my menu.list also, i have given the root=/dev/sdb1

also, we don’t give a flying fuck about ubuntu errors, no matter how old. tell #ubuntu about those

but the error says that its not valid,

well

try sda1

it still error on debian too :/

you can create your own debs. easily apt-get source and then you can tweak gcc optimization settings

then how to install it again

wols_, same is the erro rmessae

how do you install .debs?

i only do apt-get install

wols_, is my method of creating the installable usb stick is correct or not ?

please rename yourself to debian_newbie. kthxbye

well i am, that;s why im here and asking

!tell c_newbie about apt howto and I told you waht to do “apt-get source” is quite a big hint it could be that 64bitness exposes a optimization bug in gcc for php. even if it’s hard to reproduce what partition has your /sbin/init on the usb stick? that’s what the kernel wants

apt-get source php5-cli?

now you need to find out under what device name this partition shows up when booting

ok, no good if I’m logging in from gdm, none of my programs pick up the timezone

php5-cli is not your php5 interpreter as a php programmer you should know that

mind, none progrms pick it up at all

hi guys, this might not really be a Debian question but I’m not sure where else to ask… I have 2 NICs on my Debian install, eth0 and eth1 and I have setup openvpn which is listening on the eth0 IP

wols_, i dont have /sbin/init/ under my usb stick

the logs claim that I am connecting to it properly but I can’t access anything behind the eth1 interface
