I don’t remember
ah, so just ranting now?
hackedbox, the bastard son of blackbox, lol
i went to standby came back and now my screen is darker how do i fix it? i also installed 915resolution a few sexonds ago seconds
might be that 915resolution messed up your gamma values
argh
you should give this command at the startup: xgamma -gamma 1.30 (or whatever value you prefer) put it into the .xsession file that way you make sure it’s always the value you like
I want to add a directory that contains modules, and depmod to be aware of it’s exsitance. How do I add a directory for depmod to scan for modules?
by putting it in your kernel module directory
i changed gamma its not that
Maybe it’s because the new drivers just make the screen look darker. this happened to me on Win once, but i fixed it by setting a way higher gamma value
depmod -b
dunno about you though :/
its not that crapsorz
lolsorz
hmm… don’t chicken out! was just’n idea… type you later guys, and tnx again!
any idea roughly how long an md active sync will take on a 36GB disk with 2.5GHz CPU and 2.5GB RAM?
cat /proc/mdstat iirc, it tells you
Hm. Is there any way I can prevent apt from upgrading the kernel and/or running grub?
remove the meat package meta!
haha I started wondering for a second there
*blush*
the kernel package itself?
hmm, not from what I can understand from it. it doesn’t say it’s syncing, but mdadm –detail does.
+meta
the meta package
yup, thanks
kernel updates use /etc/kernel-img.conf, which defaults to running grub
ohnos, its shadowcat !smack shadowcat
How do I disable dmraid in knoppix 5.x? I cannot mount my hard drive because it says its busy. This is because DMRAID is in use, help? dmraid -an does not work
!spank liable
ah, so I can edit that file and specify what I want it to do after kernel upgrades? or rather, what I don’t want it to do :p
yes.
thanks!
no, just remove the meta package and you wont get kernel upgrades unless you install them
well, the kernel upgrades can come in if they like, it’s the grub part which is scaring me
You can start fixing IT by fixing academia’s terrible lack of content in CS courses, grumble
I have to use dd to copy the boot sector from a working drive otherwise it all fails
eww
wouldn’t it be better to… fix grub?
and I mean - FAILS.
kernel upgrades don’t touch your boot sector if you’re using grub They just run update-grub, which edits /boot/grub/menu.lst to have an entry for the new kernel
ah. Just wanted to be sure. When is grub run, then? If I was able to identify the problem I’d fix it.
now i’m confused
only when you install grub
whats the actuall problem you have?
but I didn’t come up with a decent search term for a cursor flashing across the screen and grub printing a smley-face-character smiley*
reinstall grub
you honestly thought I havent tried that? :p
paste your menu.list and cat /proc/mounts
no luck, I’m afraid
this obviously isnt an ordinary install
tell us the way your harddisk is set up, what contoller what drives, etc
Why should menu.lst matter? When i copy the bootsector (bs=446 count=1), it works perfectly. hm… let me look up the motherboard data.
and what are you doing AFTER dd-ing the bootsector? how do you screw it up again?
who can help me install my ati display card?
what chip/card exactly?
by running grub.
why are you running grub then ?
because it makes no sense at all. thats why, and your menu list and mounts are the first step to seeing what may be going on
wols, RV350 (radeon 9600)
I am not. If you read the backlog, you would find me asking for help on how to *prevent* apt from ever running grub.
no it’s not. caushis problem manifests before menu.lst and mounts ever matter put grub on hold
Moin!
caushis?
do you want fglrx(proprietary) or the radeon driver(Free software)? cause his !tell ix about hold
wols, does it has difference?
yes
alright, I am putting it on hold. For that matter, I could even remove the meta kernel package, since I am compiling my own kernel.
I told you the differences
agreed, but explain to me why update-grub would rewrite mbr in the first place
kernel has nothing to do with your problem. at all it simply doesn’t
right
putting grub on hold isn’t going to stop it from being run if that is really what is happening
anyway, thanks!
why else would it run then? and who starts it?
right, so i want to see what he’s got in mounts to see wtf his sytem is
why else other than what?
its obviously non standard
grub is being run as part of updating the grub package?
user says running grub overwrites his MBR for some reason don’t run grub. so what will run grub except installing a new version of it?
why not just purge grub?
kinda hard to boo without a bootloder *boot
wols, i download official radeon driver ,use command”sudo ./ati-driver-installer-8.x.x.run –buildpkg debian/testing” to install it
why not tell us what kind of fucked up linking or whatever hes done
he said he’s not using grub to boot, he’s using legacy shit copied by hand rfom somewhere else boo. If you install proprietary drivers, the lobbyist win!
removing grub doesnt remove the mbr or even the /grub directory
we do not support this. at all. any problems with that: ask ati, not us. This is the fglrx driver btw, not the “radeon” driver
but it will remove update-grub, which he fears
yes update-grub isnt the problem though. i was actually agreeing with you on the removing grub bit seeing as ix wont paste any of his configs its all speculation to whats wrong
if he doesn’t actually run grub to boot, all bets are off and he better fsck off
how does cpu% returned by ps relates to real cpu usage on machines with multiple cpus ?
check your backlog, there was someone that had a burning question for you
yeah, he asked me to email him if I had advice for him, but he didn’t tell me about what
heh
obviously he needs advice how to present his problem. what else?
http://fosswire.com/2007/09/08/fix-a-frozen-system-with-the-magic-sysrq-keys/
i mean… when i see “98%” there, is it 98% of one cpu or of all the power ?
is that a question?
hi - I just created a VPS on a Hexonet.net account. cat /etc/debian_version says “3.1″, but when I try to do a dist-upgrade it ends up saying sid/lenny - I really would like it to be etch instead - what am I doing wrong?
show us the output of ‘apt-cache policy’ ; use a pastebin: /msg dpkg pastebin
What on earth does /usr/bin/open do?
it .. um .. opens stuff?
opens a tty err, opens application on tty
A new tty? On like vt7 if 1 through 6 are already used?
i would think it would baulk if 1-6 are used
yeah, it should be unused iirc
try and use all your tty’s up and tell us
What is the most fun 3D app in Debian unstable?
I asked because I’m going through another admin’s rc script
the cow screensaver
BTW, in answer to your earlier question, ‘neither’
I’d only ever seen open(1) on OS X before where it does something totally different.
amphi, Thanks for your feedback. I have installed the last compiz from http://download.tuxfamily.org/osrdebian/dists/unstable/compiz-fusion-git/index.html
that’s the repository of shame?
It works, but I have a problem with keyboard and mouse delay, in any windows manager,
hi
*window manager
amphi, yes
let’s say for some bogus reasons I installed libc from lenny, ran into all sorts of troubles (naturally) and aptitude reinstall won’t reinst the etch libc6. what are my options?
0 perhaps
amphi, I have tried failsave amphi, but I get the same problem amphi, keyboard and mouse events delay amphi, a lot of delay!
apart from reinstalling, you can try with aptitudes gui to install the previos version, or use =version or force the old libc6 with dpkg
will dpkg remove the old one?
yes
good, ill go with that i guess
is you use –force options
http://paste.lisp.org/display/47771
uh huh
you may well be fucked, but i guess it cant hurt to try
amphi, I desist. No way with compiz Is there any fun 3D app?
ah, it’s just libc6, no biggie
tuxracer neverball
tremulous
google earth?
of course
thanks liable DexterF twb I have something to do now
eh? why not? what video card do you have? it runs fine on my 32MB mobility radeon 7500
amphi, nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x] (rev a2)
aptitude search ‘~sgames !~D~sgames’
thanks twb
hello. anyone using network-manager with gnome on sid?
amphi, It is working rightly for some 3D apps. I think it is rightly configured
compiz runs fine on that card? what chipset is that, r200?
yeah, rv200 according to man radeon
its going through lots of changes especially irt wireless. if its broken, check bts, and deal with it
that is on a ‘clean’ install. Running apt-get dist-upgrade messes up the installation
apt-get -d wont get the debs, says already latest version. how would I get the debs then?
water and a couple of other effects that I don’t care about don’t work
they are in /var/cache/apt/archives/
guess it’s the ‘testing’ part that isn’t good - just don’t now the way to tell 3.1 that it should upgrade to etch
IIRC I have an rv250, compiz runs as if there is no 3D acceleration at all
actually the new ones are there.
But stuff like tremulous and bzflag are playable oh, maybe you’re not using the Free driver?
[retry] does cpu usage percentage relate in any way to real cpu utilization of the smp machine? (if yes, how?)
ok, packages.debian.org
wouldn’t ‘cat /etc/debian_version’ return ’sarge’ if it was a normal stable release?
etch is stable
it would
current stable is etch
3d fine here on an rv250 with xorg 7.2. the 7.1 radeon module still has some glitches but works so far, too
I am; radeon/aiglx - fglrx doesn’t support this card at all (not that I was tempted by it in any case)
not when it was installed back then
I admit I didn’t try very hard to make compiz work After all, it’s still an occlusive WM when all is said and done
you appear to be using a sarge install disk from when it was an rc disk. paste your sources.list
I find it quite usable; wall, expo, and scale are handy
poncha / liable : I know would like to upgrade to etch
i suggest you get a recent stable install disk
I can’t. It’s preinstalled on a VPS
hi everyone, I was trying to configure mail watcher in xfce desktop, I set it up for the correct imap server and related password and user but it does not notify me for new mail.
or install with that disk, and upgrade after you have edited sources.lst
update to sarge proper, then update that to etch. and make SURE you have a rescue system by your hoster
it installs with testing as source
he already has a install. and no CD anywhere
that’s exactly what I would like to do, but can’t seem to find a guide to it
put “sarge” in your sources.list and update to it
and he runs dist-upgrade whilst his sources point to testing
!tell Jen about sarge-etch
paste your sources.list
(and for the record I’m a OS X/Ubuntu dude so Debian seemd to be the most sane thing to choose) one sec
are you a chick? just so i get the right him/her thing
ahmmm… VPS. that means not being able to change kernels…
sed is still ascii, 1975 called etc.
hehe, wtf was that about
I think you mean sed is still byte-based.
are you completely sure mdadm’s report of “State - active sync /dev/sdb2″ means it’s actively syncing? because cat /sys/block/md1/md/sync_action claims it’s “idle” so I think ‘active sync’ doesn’t means it’s actually syncing
I don’t think it cares whether those bytes represent ascii or herrings
http://pastebin.ca/698512 no - have to dissapoint you on that one
we can still pretend wanna cyb3r? replace the “testing” with “sarge”
ha ha yeah - won’t go in your way if it means that you’ll help me out ty
do that after a fresh install, before upgrading..
what is the clean way to have the modules for my network devices (mii and b44) loaded at startup by udev ? I have to load them manually at each boot
use=version did it then
and then just apt-get update && apt-get upgrade ?
nice
no
as long as you have the fresh install and edit the list beforehand, yes
ha ha “which one to trust…”
not wols!
unless you cyber with him, maybe he give a little extra help
what’s your proposal?
who’s your VPS provider?
they suck obviously
hexonet.net they are _cheap_
obvioulsy they are installing with a rc sarge install which is 3 years old
yeah I know
hmm, can’t find the vps page in en, what do they charge and for what?
~6 euro
ahh. that is check. what virtualization do they use? cheap*
http://hexonet.net/page/products/vserver.php?SETLANGUAGE=en_US Virtozzo
the “free” virtuozzo version? also from 3 years back?
s/Virtozzo/Virtuozzo
even though they are cheap, i would make a point of telling them that they are asking for their hosts to be pwned due to there badly outdated initial install
no idea
the sarge kernels from that era have some pretty funky exploits in them
ok
Hey guys, how can I check my disk space quota on my user?
ahh, openvz based…ok getting them to recompile a kernel would be a giant bitch then [uml is easy enough, xen is really easy]
but all the bad things aside their support is great (never waited more than 15 mins for an answer) and their servers seems to be quite stable had a host running for more than a year some years ago
hi, I need help. I’ve got a linux machine (ubuntu hoary) that I what to install debian on. I’ve got a floppy and a 128 MB usb stick and a bios not able to boot from usb. How to do that?
in virtualisation world, would the kernel exploits work?
anyway - is the any good VPS providers in that price range?
get the hd-media kernal and initrd, add it to grub menu and boot from it
linode if you can afford 20USD [300M RAM, 8G disk, 200G xfer]
debian still has floppies, but the hd-media kernel would be better
the exploit would only exploit the VPS. barring any special patches from the VPS software itself, it’S a normal linux host kernel of that era and epxloitable
thank you . Is there any docs on this, or can I ask questions here?
is ram etc burstable?
ok, so its still a problem then.
no.
its mentioned in the install guide
ok
i don’t quite understand burstable ram though, seems dodgy
once you have read that, feel free to ask here
tried vpslink.com and didn’t notice, that ram wasn’t burstable - that left me with a 64mb host willing to run NOTHING
as in openvz/vserver there is only one kernel running, i wonder if the exploit could affect the host OS
mmmh and linode has ubuntu too (no flaming intended but that’s what I know the best )
not sure how ubuntu beats debian in the server space but ok
didn’t say that it does - that’s just what I know the best (not that it means much)
fair enough. i am unaware how much difference there is once you get down to a using-everything-via-ssh level
i’ll even give you a hint seeing as you are coming over from the dumb side.. oops i meant dark side http://www.us.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch05s01.html.en#boot-initrd
thx, found it going for reboot and installation now
sweet
no, not the dark side… The debian side
from i said!
No package ‘libxml-2.0′ found, I checked that i have it through apt-get install libxml2 what should i do to make it work
get the -dev package \and a much less annoying nick
libxml2-dev
ok, i’ll try
it looks like a milipede

so what ’s the reason after those -dev packages, these contain the source files?

thx
that nick hurts my eyes!
configure now runs correctly
unfortunately nickometer wont work on it
is there a switch in find to only search for directory names?
sure is. man find
what is the switch in find to only search for directory names?
/directory
i’ve been looking for a good while
push n a few times till you find it on the 16th n i hit it [which doesn’t take as long as it sounds]
it does if you don’t know what to look for

Want to use a newer ATI videocard in sarge? for etch/testing and sid/unstable, just install fglrx-driver and fglrx-kernel-src and read /usr/share/doc/fglrx-kernel-src/README.Debian.gz Try to avoid using ati’s stuff directy unless you have to. — I’ve heard the driver control panel app needs 32bit libs to compile under 64b, or chris.evenden@amd.com, or and open specs announced 2007-09-05.

uhm no vizualization no full hardware
ah, i forgot what you were asking about. stew had no idea either. try asking him now, he was here not long ago
you around still?
is this after a fresh install?
yeah. Fresh install, edit sources to ’sarge’, apt-get update and apt-get upgrade
install a 2.6 kernel
how can i check which kernel i ‘m running?
try apt-get -f install Jen,
uname -a or uname -r
theres some ability you have to allow the guest before you can run x in a vserver guest, i can’t recall - its in the wiki
mfrisch, well, it seems X can run in a guest just fine, but i’m just a lazy one that doesn’t want to manualy confgure xorg.conf, so i was hoping to make dpkg make the work
cast, it’s CAP_RAW_IO, I have X working, i’m just wondering what’s preventing dpkg to auto detect my hardware

but update your sources and follow the instructions in the release notes, and get back with problems

What does lspci use to “detect” the hardware ? I mean, is there a database or something ?
How do I change the font on tty ?
dont ‘upgrade’ just change your sources and follow the release notes
The reason being they aren’t just a rehash of stale ideas in a badly-designed and -implemented interpreter. They will teach you to look at problems in more than once way.
PCI is designed to tell the host what cards/devices are there the translation from device nunmbers to Names does a text file
but isn’t ruby the “cool” thing these days ;]
No.
lol
If you want to get paid instead of educated, learn Python and Java and PHP.
wols, yeah i know, but i’m playing around with vservers, and if I copy lspci into a vserver, the poor lspci doesn’t “detect” my hardware, but if I use it on the host, it works
Ruby has a smaller user base than Python and isn’t different enough for anyone to care about it.
when i am adding a repository to sources.list is it enough to just add it to the first line or i need to put it on everyline?
probably the vserver doesn’t allow the guest to access the hardware, which is only reasonable
what do you mean “add it to the first line”? each non-comment, non-blank line in sources.list represents exactly one repository.
every line is ONE repository
wols, i’ve added the necessary capabilities, lspci seems to see the devices, but it doesn’t “know” them

wrong, lots of people care about ruby

he needs to run the original kernel from his hoster or ask his hoster which kernel to use

Playing WAVE ‘/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav’ : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono but nothing comes out of the speakre *speakers how is that possible? volume is max
hey .. I am using fetchmail to get my mail and procmail to sort it, but in /var/log/mail.log I get a lot of “Error while writing to “~/.procmaillog”" … why is that?
and laptop speakers dont have volume control
Absolute0, you are aware mute is different from levels?
i can only unmute max volume
as root?
“There was an error initializing the audio i/o layer. You will net be able to play or record audio. Error: Host error.” ?
and its not muted
but as of now (in etch), aptitude keeps track, apt-get does not
yes
Konqueror displays these rectangles instead of characters,I thought maybe it should display some insects instead of them, itd’be funnier
even my module is loaded whats the command that lists all connected hardware?
cTATUK, fuser -v /dev/dsp* /dev/snd* - anything returned?
i dont have lshw

Absolute0, doubleclick your speaker icon and check
Nothing.
is anyone seeing SSL routinesSL3_GET_RECORD:wrong version number in the courier-imap-ssl in unstable?
cTATUK, IIRC audacity uses /dev/dsp - that device exists?
I have installed openvpn on debian server and a ubuntu client.. When i start openvpn on the client it works fine, but I cant get on the internet, somebody who knows why ?
ivan`: I am using unstable … how would I see that?
Yes.
what’s your route ? dns ?
try to have an iphone connect to a courier-imap/TLS server heh
!bts
it has been said that bts is the Bug Tracking System for Debian packages, http://bugs.debian.org/ or to go directly to the bug page for a particular package/bug, try http://bugs.debian.org/packagename or http://bugs.debian.org/bugnumber apt-get install reportbug, and check out querybts too. Unstable users are required to check the BTS, useful for sid: apt-get install apt-listbugs, or apt-get install apt-listchanges
cTATUK, other sound apps - like aplay - works as expected?
abrotman, my nameserver in resolv.conf is correct
ivan`: ahh .. ok .. dont have iphone
yeah
heyas
anyone knows of a free image pasting site without a login so that i can show you guys my alsamixer?
how do I delete data from a dvd-rw?
Actuall aplay produces static when running ‘aplay file.mp3′ but totem plays the file just fine
cTATUK, that’s expected aplay can’t handle mp3
ah i just tried to chmod 666 /dev/dsp that didn’t help audacity USED to work on this exact system but now doesn’t suddenly, even after trying to reinstall audacity
hi all , want to install debian on a pc with Western Digital 80GB SATA, but debian can’t find the hd
here is my alsamixer screen http://img66.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshothz4.png like i said no pcm mute/unmute i think thats the problem
its not the hard drive model that matters, its the controller chip
can you look at that link?
i’ll see
I find the Gnome alsa mixer more easy to work with, aptitude install gnome-alsamixer
master seems unmuted
i doubt that will help but i am trying it
where to read the controller chip on the hd ?
google your mobo
ehh so no solution to my problem? !alsa-checklist
/dev/dsp` work for root?
nas
your motherboard controller chip. you use lspci to check
whats arts?
i have to install first debian for make lspci ?
no !artsd
from memory, artsd is the much maligned soundserver of the much maligned analog Real time synthesizer
anyone know of any decent replacements for final cut pro on linux?
do i need arts or esound?
you don’t need either
ehh
howto please explain
this sucks
what mainboard do you have?
ok one mom
and what chipset does your mainboard have?
how do i check what kind of monitor i have? i only see my videocard in lspci
AVID perhaps
read-edid?
whats the command for it ? just installed it
he just told you dpkg -L
thats not the command maybe i need to logout first..
call with –help first though, because usually the output is not really readable.
no. it’s a better command. using it you can learn something for the future
its get-edid get-edid|parse-edid so does anyone know how i can get audio on my laptop?
I have installed openvpn on debian server and a ubuntu client.. When i start openvpn on the client it works fine, but I cant get on the internet, somebody who knows why ?
Absolute0, run alsamixer
yi did I did
and if stuf is unmuted/opened it should work
http://img66.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshothz4.png well it doesnt
Absolute0, pcm has no highlighted green 00
thats what i was trying to say all this time
Is it an older one?
defrysk, FYI neither has mine - works fine with only master unmuted
older what? when i press m by pcm nothing happens
your laptop
I changed /etc/fstab to get a tmpfs and then mount -a, while a graphical session was running. All the temporary files to make up a valid X session (all kinds of sockets files) are now gone. Is there a way to “restart Gnome” without killing any programs I started in gnome-terminal?
i just got it 2 days ago!
hi you here?

any other suggestions?
*rereding, what your audio-problem was* *scroll*
or no sound for me? how do i start esound? its not in init.d
Absolute0, my guess is you need a newer alsaversion
Absolute0, hit sigmatel stac9200 alsa in google and find out whats wrong
I am running alsaconf and its not saving my settings. it fails cuz no audio devices found, but it is detected. once before, simonrvn had said someohting about a .sh script you had tor un which resided somewhere, which would generate the correct device nodes where can i find this script?
hi, what are the kernel sources called in debian again?
and here are all detailed information http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-65948
and also, the nvidia installer complains about CC not being the same version as the one the kernel was compiled with
the stable version isnt good?
this is in lenny
linux-source-version
Absolute0, that’s not what I said Absolute0, you devices uses snd-hda-intel? meh
i think so
does anyone know?
thank you
thats what alsoconf picked up
I need to generate the audio device nodes like /dev/dsp
Absolute0, that driver is work in progress
dunno how
Nyle, simply loading snd-pcm-oss doesn’t fix it?
oh so there we go
no
!nagios
Nagios is a popular open source computer system and network monitoring application software. It watches hosts and services that you specify, alerting you when things go bad and again when they get better.
i had the same problema few weeks ago cahoot simonrvn said something about a script I had to run and that fixed it because i think i didn’t have the device nodes before just like now
can i use any alternative for now?
Absolute0, Id suggest a visit to alsa-user maling list mailing list

Is there a way to “restart Gnome” without killing any programs I started in gnome-terminal? The best thing would be if I was able to move one terminal program to another terminal.
Nyle, running invoke-rc.d alsa-utils reset 0 does no good?
But I don’t think those things are in Linux.

AFAIK, Gnome (gdm) also has the obnoxious feature that I cannot login twice in a graphical session. (with the same user)
read about the sound section : http://www.notebookforums.com/thread133914.html
no
that’s not really obnoxious. Much of gnome does not support this, so what gdm does would be good
Mixer attach default error: No such device /usr/sbin/alsactl: save_state:1253: No soundcards found… etc.
gnome doesnt even support multiple users on the same system
alsaconf is a broken program.
it *is* kinda crappy — it’s like saying you can’t have more than one login shell
there is a workaround what do you mean?
AFAIK, it does. I can select an option “login as a different user”
having multiple users logged into gnome at a time breaks things breaks things right, despite that option its not (well) supported
ok, I haven’t encountered that situation, but I believe you. if you would read the documentation that came with the package, you wouldn’t have to ask.
Hi
sure its crappy, point is that gdm _protects_ you by not allowing the unsupported multiple logins
i have a usb tv tuner card (Pinnacle PCTV Stereo). does anyone have a link to any resources on getting this to work in debian?

/usr/share/doc/name of package
so its on by default?
/usr/share/doc/alsa-utils/README.Debian nothing
in archlinux its off by dafault
just like other alsa packages
remember that piece of information, it’s about the most interesting thing to know.
i dunno wtf youre talking about
I think it’s on because the kernel automatically load the kernel module
oh
/usr/share/doc/alsa-base/README.debian - Nyle
well with fb everything looks like crap!
is this the only help you can give? not to be rude, but you’re kinda wasting my time
read cahoot’s comment hahaha what do you think _you_ are doing?
hi. i want to run aterm or gnome-terminal and execute a script. i got this by gnome-terminal -e script or aterm -e script but the window closes instantly. i need the window to stay open. how do i get this working?
thanks so what exactly am I looking for in the documentation?
creating device files?
ahh yes at least cahoot is helpful fasta only said rtfm
and that’s the only thing that is helpful, since if you don’t understand what you are doing, you are going nowhere.
I understand but you don’t have to be a dick about it
I am not, you just interpret it in that way.
hi, I would like to ask how I can create physical volumes larger than 2GB, because command pvcreate creates them only 2GB large. I use Debian testing.
whatever
what type of filesystem ?
abrotman no filesystem yet, it’s only physical volume for lvm2
eh .. that doesn’t make sense
you create physical volume then you create volume group and then logical volumes(those you format with fs)
I did not figure to look in alsa-base since alsaconf is under alsa-utils
i thought you were farther along i guess
why would you thihnk that it creates only 2GB sized pv?
because it does this: PV Size 2.00 GB
the size of the pv is the size of the underlying block device
i guess thats why you came off as a dick, because i had already looked through the docs, or thought I had, and I’m still told I wouldn’t have to ask if I read the docs
yes the underlaying device is one created with cryptsetup 210GB
/dev/md1 system lvm2 a- 148,57G 101,57G
can anyone tell me why on earth the 2.6.21/22 kernels have changed the device IDs? e.g hda8 becomes sda8. This is a real PITA because you have to (a) change the grub line for the new kernel and also change the fstab which, unless you use UUIDs, is then incompatible with etch!
you’re alright
maybe that is not really 210GB sized? i know nothing cryptsetup specific
because they combined the SATA and PATA code
I used this: cryptsetup -c aes-cbc-essiv:sha256 -s 256 luksFormat /dev/DEVICE
hi
e2label(1), kopt root=LABEL=yourfslabel
that’s not useful for me, i know nothing cs specific..
but why not do it properly and move to UUIDs?
why is alsaconf included in the package if it is such a bad program. I mean, obviously there are better ways, no?
well, I thought its transparent to lvm2
they havent, they just added drivers ( they didnt remmove old ones though )
it works for some users.
is there a standard facility in debian that can set the read ahead on various block devices? or is currently the only way to add a new init.de script or add lines to rc.local?
bad timing I guess.
that can indeed change the physical device names though..
but on my crappo-meter it scores quite high. What chip do you have?
I tried the backport of the 2.6.22 kernel and finally I can have my SATA in enhanced mode. But where to get the necessary nvidia kernel files?
what is? what’s your cs device? what’s your /dev/DEVICE ?
If you know that, you look up the alsa matrix on alsa-project.org
cryptsetup status gives me this size of the encrypted device size: 4190909 sectors device is /dev/sda2
so that is 2G
then you follow card specific instructions there.
or what?
ich8
if there’s no driver for your hardware, give up or get another card.
how much is 1 sector 256bytes or 512?
some realtek cheapo hd onboard chip
512
its just that the devices nodes were not created by alsa, and I was simply looking for that snddevices script
that’s the wrong approach you should not do anything with device nodes
everything is fine now, and honestly I did not figure to look in alsabase because alsaconf is in alsautils
damn, so now I have other trouble how to create 210GB encrypted partition with cryptsetup
why?
is your sound working?
yes
guessing that the source of your error is that ‘alsa does not ccreate device nodes’ is silly, and most likely wrong
thank you for help
ok, are you sure it still works after a reboot?
proabably
you should test that.
i’ll worry about it when i reboot you are proabably right. I admit I don’t know the inner workings of said packages
well, at least in modern Alsa + kernel combinations nobody does manual device nodes, anymore.
so why was there no /dev/snd? or any sound related device nodes until i ran the script s/was/were
make sure linux-sound-base is installed and ‘dpkg-reconfigure linux-sound-base’ to set it to alsa
udev
I don’t know what script you are talking about.
it is installed
and you do not need any scripts
in /usr/share/alsa-base/snddevices
no device found or and/or no driver loaded
filing bug now or well following up with the alreday filed one
www.pennergame.de/ref.php?refid=7309922 müsst ma rauf klicken
plus the documentation said i think if the post installation script for alsa does not create the device nodes, then run the script manually
www.pennergame.de/ref.php?refid=7309922
!ops
[ops] Please invoke ‘dpkg: ops $problem’ to call the ops to deal with a specific problem. Misuse of this will lead to a ban.
device nodes names are explicitely dynamic. Unfortunately many distros by default do not respect that.
why are you calling ops?
…
because of the spammer
kruste
yes but he has already left anyway so what is the problem here i want to understand. I found a fix/workaround but i want to understand
what was the fix?
default debian install uses udev i suppose, and if device nodes are not being created then where is the problem here? with udev or with alsa? running the /usr/share/alsa-base/snddevices script
the problem is usually that the kernel modules are not loaded
driver wasnt loaded?
it was
does sound actually work now?
yes yes yes
custom kernel?
it happened last time as well
anyone have idea how to create encrypted partition bigger than 2GB? I use this command cryptsetup -c aes-cbc-essiv:sha256 -s 256 luksFormat /dev/sda2
nope, just regular stock
what’s the size of sda2?
few weeks ago same problem, simonrvn said look in that script and i did and that is what fixed it If you are not using udev then you can create the ALSA device files manually by running the snddevices program in /usr/share/alsa-base/. This should have been done for you by alsa-base’s post-installation
udev, a udev rule in /etc/udev/ or a broken sound driver that does not initiate the node creation
damn
220GB partition unformated
ahh so there could be those issues
there’s a udevmonitor program you could run while the driver gets loaded
i’ll look around in there see if i find anything, cuz obviously this is a bug ok
like : run udevmonitor , then /etc/init.d/alsa force-reload
what error do you get?
yup
or alsa-utils force-reload

what do you need to know?
hi there. a short question… i dont like 1000hz kernels neither 250HZ… someone told me its possible to set Kernelfrequency manually to 500 in param.h. Is he right and i’m to dumb to get it working? thanks for answers
you notice a difference? What are you doing?
I’m having some weird problems with my wireless I installed the ipw3945 drivers successfully, set up WEP, and brought it up… …and it froze the entire system. advice?
how is the passwords scheme in debian?
what package do I need to install to have a proper cgi-bin? apache2, mind you
Supaplex when i set HZ to 1000 in menuconfig + 500 in param.h he gives me 1000ticks after compiling. when i set 250HZ in menuconfig and 500hz in param.h it gives me 250ticks. so i dont think overwritting with param.h does work… or am i doing something wrong?.. should it work?
what debian version are you using?
4.0r1 the base system isn’t updated, the KDE and X suites are
that’s not my question. is there a performance difference between different values?
what do you mean?
I did a base install from 4.0r1 and installed KDE and X by network, so they’re up-to-date I haven’t run an apt-get upgrade yet think that’s it?
updating to 4.0 went fine, but the kernel upgrade didn’t work out. Guess I have to confront the provider on that one. Thanks for beeing patient
why not?
haven’t had time
Hello, maildrop does not detect my custom installation of authlib, how to specify it?
ah, good. yeah, give em a ring and give em a serving for their shit base system you havent had time to type apt-get upgrade?
Supaplex there is a difference, thats for sure. at 1000hz the cpu is working real hard, but my realtime processes work much finer, softer, they reach 1000fps. at 250HZ they reach 250fps and are missing performance. so i want to reach the middle by set HZ to 500, understand?
already did that - maybe I should have waited until they have provided me the help to upgrade the kernel
not that thats the problem. its just a strange excuse
no, I haven’t had time to *wait* for the command to finish
hi all
instead of using ifup, have you tried to get the iface up with ifconfig and iwconfig?
/proc/ …)
in the mirrors debian is java sun?
what would that do?
you can see whether it works at each step of the process
because the whole notion of a timer tick is so very … 90’s.
Supaplex well, what about starting some kind of project?
NO_HZ. really. it’s a good thing.
CONFIG_NO_HZ=y CONFIG_HZ=300
NO_HZ ???
AHM IN UR BOX STEALIN UR HURTZ
yeah, it’s painless
timer tick is very stupid liable, lol http://www.aerifal.cx/~dalias/images/h4×0rz.jpg
yes my puns HZ sometimes. my bad.
xingu will me realtime processes be able to reach 1000fps with no ticks? they were just able to with kernel HZ set to 1000…
you can seal all the hurts you want steal*
what does HZ stand for here? because it’s very funny given you speak russian
hertz obviously
1/1000000 mhz of course
Hz… not HZ
perhaps you could talk a little bit more about what your realtime processes actually do and what they are blocking on before I comment.
preprocessor symbols should never use lowercase
!hz
in general waiting for a time-period to elapse is a pretty dumb idea
test
Test Failed.
bad preprocessor symbol. no biscuit.
how do I check direct rendering is enabled?
xingu its a process that should be able to calculate 1000 times a second and interrupt that often too, so the calculations can be send to clients in realtime.
glxinfo
i don’t have it..
install mesa-utils
tnx
noted…..
xingu would that process be able to do that without static ticks ?
ok now how do I check how many fps glxgears gives? I don’t see anything only the weels
so basically you have two thread groups (a calculate group and a send group) and a per-client mutex or semaphore raised when a tx timeslot is ready
!glxgears
i guess glxgears is an opengl demo. it is not a good benchmark, in fact in recent versions of glxgears you must pass it the -iacknowledgethatthistoolisnotabenchmark flag in order to get it to report fps information. now located in the mesa-utils package.
what I don’t understand yet is what part of this problem belongs in the time domain
k tnx
ie, why not run both thread groups at full throttle as resource permits?
xingu we are confusing each other. that wasnt actually what i wanted to know. when i joined here i just asked if its possible to set kernelHz to 500, because i got 6 of this realtime processes and with 1000hz there stressing the cpu really hard. so i have to throttle them to 500. but i cant to it in process options. they make whatever the kernel let them do. so i just asked… what do i have to do, to set kernelHz to 500, and is it poss
100 250 300 1000 is it
xingu in menuconfig i have 100-250-1000 and overwritting with param.h (a friend told me) doenst really work
I think what you want to know is how to move your problem from being one which happens on a timer tick to one which happens when your per-client tx queue is empty enough to take a newly calculated result
and not adjustable in relatime ooh, confusing
liable i havent 300Hz in my 2.6.18 menuconfig..
i have in 22. shrug
liable me not
300HZ merged in 2.6.19 from memory
ok
so theres no chance to set kernelHz to 500? (if its dumb or not is another question)…
dont believe so
if something speeds up with a faster tick rate it’s because it’s busy-waiting on the next timer to fire, and that’s just unbelievably dumb.
ifconfig up didn’t work, since I configured it with iwconfig I tried using wifi-radar instead, with the same results
does iwconfig show it as associated with the key set?
yes
it’s also quite probable that it’s getting no benefit from icache or dcache
xingu dumb but necessary
so it gives a link quality?
not until I ifup it then KWifiManager reports 77 just before the crash
bah fuck all the stupid fucking gui wifi tools nobody can use the backend tools anymore
you probably also want to test your use-case with NO_HZ and CFS (head-of-git-repo vers.)
xingu the NO_HZ… may i write it in the param.h or in the .config file?
how come ardour isn’t in lenny?
so… advice?
menuconfig choice in a recent kernel
xingu in “processor types and features” theres no option that sounds even nearly that way
2.6.22 on i386, 2.6.23rc on amd64
can I use wild cards as in ‘find . -name fis*’ ?
you have to quote them find . -name ‘fis*’
xingu its important i run an 2.6.18.. isnt it possbile to use some sort of patch to implement the NO_HZ?
…?

any advice?
xingu i really think im too unexperienced to do some sort of…. coding
is the Happs guy in here, that works on it?
maybe you should ban mortal_ I mean MORG
if you need to timecode something, get the calc thread to put a timecode onto the data buckets, allow it to *overrun* if the tx queue is full (ie, discard in the event a result is ready too early), and get the client to do whatever it needs to with the results as they arrive
I did
hi
yo
the resource constraint is not time; it’s compute resource, it’s transmission slots, but it’s not time.
yes. use the backend tools before you try the gui’s
the cpu calculates, the packet sould be send immedialty. the cpu calculates again… and so on, and this 1000 (or 500) times a second. is that stupid? will the scheduler get pissed of?
kill kwifi and dont use your interfaces file. use ifconfig and iwconfig, check to see if it gets associated then try dhclient
When I mount an NFS share from a CentOS server, files owned by nobody show up in ls(1) as being owned by “4294967294″. How do I fix this?
CFS won’t; but why not let the calculation and the transmit take place asynchronously?

none of this is a time domain problem at the tx end; and it’s not one at the rx end either, if you put a timecode onto your packets.
