been a long time since i’ve had to reboot because of a kernel update
hmm, so by supplying a new kernel debian implicitly recommends rebooting
geo-rge, is that true ?
you aren’t running the kernel till you reboot unless something’s changed that I wasn’t aware of
ok, theres a good point, i guess i am thinking of kernel updates
now fix my touchpad’s tap function
what kind of touchpad is it? are you using the synaptics driver?
if (a) they supply a new kernel and then (b) they create dependency such that it must be installed in order to make other packages work… yes, they do
my P4 laptop’s pad works with synaptics, and it can even tell if you tap with one,m two, or three fingers
I was joking but if you want to attempt.. it’s a Toshiba Tecra M3 umm, how can I get more details bI was joking but if you want to attempt.. it’s a Toshiba Tecra M3 umm, how can I get more details/b
Just try the synaptics driver instead of the generic mouse driver user$ man synaptics
done that
that said, my acer’s touchpad is crap and doesnt work that way
got that and the speed setting set up as it was SLOW by default
libtouch does the translation of taps (fyi) for me anyway
in fact that case is an attempted force to reboot
I unfortunately have to say that the touchpad is kind of weak in performance compared to windows
it depends on the pad
like my acer’s
I have the sensativity turned WAY up and it still seems to not know
it has a 4way dpad on it thats supposed to scroll but all it does is the b’dink beep in windows
what program would tell me details on a MP3 file?
there’s probably a driver for it that makes it work in win
hmm, odd, no drivers?
Stock acer suite its not a real scrollpad
and no go… that sucks.. laptops suck in general
if it read as a generic scroll wheel it’d be perfect older ones are good (this one is perfect, even the winmodem worsk in linux)
so, this libtouch, shoulc I be able to slocate it? I also tried apt-cache search and no good
I think evtouch is the only driver that uses it google it
just wondering if it might already be installed/in use so the touch screen drivers do the tap sensing on a “standard” touchpad? so the touch screen drivers do the tap sensing on a “standard” touchpad?
and it doesnt even itnerrupt my ssh linux rocks. Doubtful :X
static address?
really? how does that work?
I didnt even ifdown I pulled the pcmcia nic eth0 lost its state
I can’t go from wired to wireless w/o it dropping mine
I put the usb nic in, which came up on eth0
ah!
heh
sneaky sneaky
that wont last though, udev will likely rename things next time
manual IP or dhcp?
manual dhcp would give me a different addr since neither of these have a static in my dhcp.conf
the reason I ask because what I got with libtouch was info about touchscreens
gotcha
exactly that’s what I was wondering unless you cloned the MACs
hrm
just can’t ever use those cards on the same network together
what is the easiest way of disabling a daemon on a given runlevel?
a buddy of mine got in a bunch of pc’s from dell/gateway/whoever… like a WHOLE network probably at least 20 pc’s… hooked it all up and it wouldn’t work fought it forever then somehow they stumbled onto the fact that they had ALL been accidently burned with the same MAC there are the shortcuts in the rc.x dir links sorry
Bogus8 thank you and nice about those dell machines and their macs…
man file has some descent info on it
BUG, with libc6 2.3.6-7 installed, and coreutils 5.2.1-2 you CANNOT upgrade libc6 because its isntaller requires the -e option in readlink which is NOT available… grrrr and the libc6 dependencys dont know about it
what function/app does the hashing of passwords or stuff if you need to store passwords in a script or something?
is it wise to just remove those lins, Bogus8? links*
Hey guys, is there an OS X chanell somewhere?
umm, depending on what you are removing probably… and as long as you know how to get to a “safe” run level if it breaks
anyboy know whether the KDE4 is available in debian?
#osx?
make changes to 4 or something, that’s kind of an extra rl
Bogus8 that wasn’t a good advice i know that debian handles those links somehow
they are just symbolic links.. I’m not following you
but you need to know how to re-create them too
though, I’m usually ADDing not removing services
can’t i just rename them?
for some reason i didnt have a lo interface configured, so i added it to /etc/network/interfaces, but now its not up by default when i restart, how can i make the lo interface be in the up state upon restart
To disable a service in this runlevel, rename its script in this directory so that the new name begins with a ‘K’ and a two-digit number perhaps that helps
they are usually duplicated in another rl… I assumed you were smart enough to look and see and make sure you knew how to put it back together once you took it apart
sysv-rc-conf works good for configuring the runlevel services
oh thank you quasisane - will try that
yw
yeah, I think that is exactly what the man file says to do… hence why I referred you to it earlier vs just listning to my “bad” advice :p
you never said what man file to use though and yes, i know that EVERYTHING is in there i just didn’t have another hour to find it
wtf
and the proper way is to use sysv-rc-conf - thanks again quasisane
the rtl8180 makefile is removing my rtl8180 source
umm, I really don’t know the exact one.. probably something to do with rc or rc.d or runlevel either way if one of those worked it would probably point you to another…. and iirc it wasn’t that big of a man file I wouldn’t say that is the “propper” way, but if that makes you happy
there are a bunch of runlevel config apps gnome has one, so does kde, etc.
and there is good ol bash
i’m a console guy
yep
hmm
btw it really is easiest to just rename those links
K
done
and they ARE all duplicated in all the other rl’s 2-5 (in my systems) all of them identical except for the ones I renamed the gdm to be k21gdm K21gdm* and i think I remember reading that case mattered on that
yes and deleting those links would mean butchering the system it’s like killing a fly with a hammer (it would work though lol)
not really, just cp rcX.d/SxxMissing rcY.d/
there is no point… mv S20 K20 will sort it out… and vice versa it says that in readme in every rl dir he he
if I don’t want or need it at that runlevel then why even bother with it being in there
because you might need it someday
what is the command for showing what services start on each runlevel?
I agree, renaming it to K is the “better” way, which is why I did it after I found it in the man file
johnadsfsdfdf use sysv-rc-conf
but the principle is still the same
just learned about that tool from quasisane
thansK!
yw
ok, umm… did nm-applet get removed from apt or something?
if I need it then I can get it out of one of the other 3 rl’s that aren’t being used and if I ever got the need to butcher all of my rcX’s then I would just make a backup of the last “default” one before messing with it
anyone know what where the problem might lies, when i am not able to ping my own internal lan ip, and the localhost loopback. Even though i am not using any kind of firewall
you can’t ping 127.0.0.1 ?
Bogus8, nope i cant internet is working though
your card is not functioning property that’s as basic as it gets really?!
ifup l0?
then you have to be blocking those packets then
I’ve had my 10 get fscked up when I was using Ubuntu
its weird though i dont remember enabling any firewall in the kernel
can you ping an outside site?
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all is a 0
I’m guessing something broke boo’s loopback interface
yeh i can ameyer, ahh k
what about your regular IP the dhcp or static one
yeh i can ping that if i change in the router not to discard it
yeah, in that case I think ameyer might be onto something
but the internal lan ip assigned by the router i cant ping
does that also work VIA the loopback (hense the name)? any other systems on your network?
yeah 2 other laptop, they on the wireless, only my machine goes through a cat5
or does your router have a “ping” function? (not sure if it will work internally though, never tried… and mine runs linux anyway ) can they ping your “broken” machine?
let me check lol yeh i can ping from the router hmm but thing is say i am running a web server, from my own machine i cant access it
fta fix is in for viewsats if anyone is wondering
cause i cant access my own ip for some reason
so your laptop could ping the machine in question right? meaning it MUST be a loopback issue?
yep
and you are saying you want to connect to a web server on localhost?
Is there CIFS support in etch? I mean can I mount remote samba share using cifs and not using smbfs?
080 it doesnt and i pretty sure i set up for it to run on port 8080 so i tried pinging my self to troubleshoot and yeh all ping lost tried loopback same thing
so the other laptops can’t hit the server either?
that i havent tried, gonna try it now
(can’t pull up web page from server) was that IP a typo? 10.0.100 isn’t enough octets
yeh typo lol but yeh i didnt typo when i tried to ping
k, just checking… happened to me the other day with a crontab line .100 is the broken machine which is also the webserver, right?
yep
if local, use 127.0.0.1:8080
is there a free alternative to macromedia flash?
and from the laptop can you pull up the webserver? yes, gnash?
there are several. libswf/gnash may not work as expected
don’t ask me how I remembered that… it came to me almost subconcious as I was typing
and on the designer side?
hmm, now you are pushing it… I did read about one but I dont’ recall it
Is there mount.cifs in debian etch?
anyone who uses flash on their websites needs taken out back and given nine grams of lead.
his loopback might be fucked or IS
!find mount.cifs
Debian Search of ‘mount.cifs’ (2): (/sbin/{mount.cifs|umount.cifs}) in otherosfs/smbfs ;; (/usr/share/doc/samba-doc/htmldocs/manpages/{mount.cifs.8.html|umount.cifs.8.html}) in doc/samba-doc.
for stuff like youtube. flash is better than the alternative IMO…
we can’t all use lynx or emacs like you :p
fuck no
Bogus8, yep i can access the webserver from the laptop
i don’t use either off those for the interwebs
so fix it
What would you prefer they use?
ok, then it’s for sure your loopback adapter
flash is more free than anything else they’d use…
embedded video has been working since the late 1990s without flash, it’s not needed by any means.
unless they used theora
bollocks
my web graphics artist gave me a swf file she started working on. its a cartoon for our website. i don’t want to use proprietary stuff in my web site!
just provide the file and a set of hooks to use an external player
I was just messing with ya
Bogus8, ahh k thanks for the help
no prob… sorry it took so long to find a simple problem
web browsers are as well-designed to polay media as toasters are to cook barbecue
Flash is simple to install, and more than 95% of systems have it by default, name another format that this is true of.
WM*?
1. false. 2. false. So on that basis I can name hundreds.
hah
Bogus8, but yeh this problem its hardware related right?
well, most other non-flash based embedded stuff can be stolen so if you are an artist trying to protect your work it is a good medium umm, I don’t think sod so*
but only due to semi-illegal bundling…
is 2.6.18-5 the newest stable?
Every Mac and Windows machine comes with Flash… go check the figures…. not to mention several popular desktop linux web hosting systems have it by default.
because flash-based crap stops people from downloading the media file. Riiiight.
I dont have a clue about getting it fixed as that is beyond my limited linux knowledge… a simple approach that might fix it is a simple reboot (if you accidently fucked it up) it helps
Mac’s and Linux boxes don’t come with WMV (other than Linspire)
isn’t there an svg format?
windows doesn’t come with flash pre-installed. not really.
Umm, XP does indeed.
not last I installed it.
no it doesn’t
it does not
Bogus8, ahh k
(which would have been about 2003) !lose fearl
You Lose.
which is why I said “it HELPS” :p
Go to Frys or Best Buy and find a machine that it’s not installed on.
there is no flash preinstalled on xp or any other microsoft system.. that’s adobe product
I guess you could throw in Java if you wanted, sort of…
I’m pretty sure it has an older version that is installed which of course needs to be upgraded as soon as you hit a “modern” site
IIRC some manufacturers pre-load it…
in the same way that not using your date of birth for a PIN helps secure your credit card.
back then it was macromedia’s product
i know not this `fry’s’ and `best buy’.
Bogus8 yes
but if you reinstall, you need to load it yourself
I hope JavaFX takes over Flash in time… but for me, currently, Flash is fine (except for when it crashes my Firefox…)
Bogus8 adobe just bought mmedia
just ages ago.
can’t wait to see microsoft buying adobe
Most Windows boxen have the M$ JVM, and Macs and some linuxes ship a JVM…
a little better than that, but I agree, I can snag a flash video… but it’s easier to get something else
No, Microsoft no longer ships msjvm
btw ms jvm sucks ass so to say
not that the M$ JVM is good, it’s from their EEE days, and only implemented JAVA 1.1 if I recall correctly
…so does 2.6.18-5
do you really want to see that happen?
If they weren’t using Flash, they would all use either AVI or WMV or MPG4 or MOV… they wouldn’t agree… currently everyone is agreeing.
um … that list makes no sense
Bogus8 it’s a crazy world already.. i wouldn’t be suprised
Umm, they are examples of what was used prior to everyone using Flash… but ok
I have to agree with fearl there… it’s easier than chasing down 3+ different players (on windows) and all those codecs
Bogus8 but let’s wait until adobe buys corel first
I dont’ see that happening
AVI is a container. WMV is a set of codecs. MPEG-4 is an open spec. MOV is a brand name for MPEG-4 using h.264 and AAC.
how on earth could you imagine macromedia being sold to adobe?
nor do I see them buying adobe… it’s too PRO for them… the users wouldn’t be pleased
They all require DIFFERENT codecs, thus my point… stop being pointlessly argumentative.
so if you’re going to indulge in a technical coinversation about the relative merits of some technologuies, wouldn’t it be beneficial to have the faintest fucking idea what those technologies are?
oh imagine ms office 16.0 with ms photoshop :s
ah yes, I remember why fearl was permabanned
honestly it’s a semi logical step, only competing product was their html programs really
I know EXACTLY what they are… however that doesn’t change my point.
codec proliferation is technically very easy to solve. In fact, it’s already solved. Flash portability continues to be a nightmare.
No, no you don’t… you just have no point, so are attacking me now, rather than the discussion…
how is the codec issue “very easy” to solve?
actually, MOV is a container format
i’ve run circles with simple divx/xvid codecs not wanting to play nice together
How is the portability bad? It’s running on phones, Linux (thus anything supporting Linux binaries), Mac’s, Windows… everything that it should.
your point remains the same though…
i have vlc. I can play a very very high percentage of videos with it, using both free and proprietary codecs.
even psp (barely) but someone will “break” that and be incompatiple… that’s how it always happens.. which is his point
mm, ok. better it being broken and rapidly fixed than permanently being broken, as it is now.
I currently only need install Flash and MP3, and can play everything I want to play… even 2 years ago, I had to have MANY codecs installed, I consider it an improvement *shrug*
I’m not a HUGE fan of flash… but it certainly makes the codec issues/embedded player stuff a non-issue
that speaks to nothing but your narrow taste in media.
at least (in theory) Adobe won’t sue you for using flash on linux
does vlc do mp4 and other crazy quicktime codecs? (streaming?)
tv-links.co.uk alluc.org youtube.com … what more could you need/want?
honest question
hrm, stupid cups keeps deleting my printer
MS might for your use of WMA/WMV
“UIRA is an acronym for UIRA Isn’t a Recursive Acronym”
the point is the codecs are transparently usable by any OS, The only thing which fucks them up is that windows codec packs are bundled with evilness and spyware that pleases me greatly. 640k should be enough for anyone!
it’s unlikely they actually would, though
“UIRA, project aims at building an OpenSource vector animation Authoring Environment (SWF/SVG) in QT4. UIRA is under LGPL.”
Sure, I can have 50 different codecs, and maybe be able to see 90% of media on the internet… neat… if everyone standardizes on JavaFX or Flash or Silverlight and they all run on my system, I’d prefer that.
yes, in fact, the free h.264 codec (x.264) used by Apple in mov and commonly used in .mp4 files is developed by the VLC team.
Silverlight is MS’s .net BS, right?
Call me crazy, but searching for codecs for 30 mins every time I reinstall is a pain :/
well … not 50. More like 10. And 90% would be ONE (ffmpeg)
*new .net bs
my only problem with that is I really don’t like a “monopoly” like that…. as a video producer I like to have my options of which formats I want to make availible to the people as do my clients
that’s a function of windows being broken. where a centralised repository of codecs exists, it’s already a non-issue.
Linux*
cool, I haven’t looked…
i haven’t had to search for codecs in *years*.
Bogus8, lol restarting the machine still same result, but yeh i check my rc services and net.lo wasnt started for some reason it was removed from the list *sigh*
Sure… if you’re installing Debian… Debian isn’t the only OS I use.
you have my condolences.
did that get it going then?
Bogus8, yep Bogus8, thanks for the help again =]
but then again are you going EVERYWHERE someoen else might go… there are other codecs being used that I feel can’t ALL be in vlc… though it does a VERY good job and is my go to replacement for poeple on windows systems
I still haven’t found a good implementation of WMV or AVI on Solaris or FreeBSD :/
no prob.. have fun!
I don’t even know of a good DivX codec for linux host :/
the only exceptions are proprietary codecs, which by definition are not worth creating media for unless you own the codec (as sony does in one case)
I have a hard time believing that… but that’s just an assumption
um … you fail.
how do I print the fingerprints of hostkeys in /etc/ssh/*.pub ?
It’s a MESS, I’d prefer a monopoly pertaining to Freeware, rather than the nuisance of the situation only a year ago
I mainly refer to more obscure codecs that some odd site uses for some strange reason and theres bink and smacker codecs
cat file | lpr -P print0r
I fail because I want an KISS solution? Neat :/
I want the fingerprint not the contents
Thing is, my opinion is winning, so this discussion is moot
no, you fail because you are complaining about a problem which is already solved.
ssh-keygen -l -f /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key
but the monopoly ISN’T freeware… the authoring apps aren’t free… I can’t encode into flash from Vegas or Final Cut Pro but I can go into lots of other codecs
By everyone using Flash, it is solved.
divx is *trivially* playable practically everywhere (even if it is complete shit)
via what codec? FFmpeg doesn’t support it last I checked… w32codecs doesn’t either in my experience… feel free to enlighten me though.
Hi If I have a harddrive that is NTFS and put it in my Linux-machine. Then I must format it as FAT32 right? To be able to get acess to the files etc.?
There are free implementations of Flash actually… if those improve, that will be perfectly viable.
but they aren’t addequate now
Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg’s libavcodec codec family
That is AVI
do they have free flash encoders for the major platforms mac, win, linux?
avi is a container format not a codec [ffodivx] vfm: ffmpeg (FFmpeg MPEG-4)
Anybody?
Neat… go search around for more and see if they play.
um … they do
I think ffmpeg can encode to flv or something
I have a file on my Linux machine that I want to put on my NTFS disk, can somebody help me a bit?
you might forget that I run a video distribution site with 20,000-some members
basically bottom line is right now if flash is standard it’s easy for the users but it cost the developers/artist money to get quality product
if you format it, there won’t be any files
Not in my experience… only video’s using older encoders…
Okej, so I MUST format it to FAT32, right?
you want files to be available to both windows and linux?
any system can encode into some descent codecs by default without having to sacrifice quality or money
Gstreamer can encode and decode Flash (with the required plugin)
ntfs-3g
bout to say that ameyer
I just put in a harddrive that is NTFS, I just want to copy a file from my linux harddrive to the NTFS harddrive.
yeah, one good aspect of flv is that is is pretty well-implemented but that’s not so much a function of flash itself
But I don’t want to delete all the files on the disk.
ameyer knows more about it that I do
can that be used on mac and windows and is it any good? can you deliever an mp4 quality product with that? or even the wmv’s have some nice looking codecs that look good
Okej, what is nfts-3g? Should I format it to ntfs-3g?
the only thing close to `mp4′ quality is [xh].264 - because that’s what you call mp4 uses
package that lets you mount ntfs systems r/w
On a Mac, yes… I think they are porting to Windows *shrug*
ok
264 is WAY more betterer than any other codec, in quality/size terms
sudo aptitude install ntfs-3g? Then I can do it? Copy/paste a file from linux harddrive to my NTFS harddrive?
though theora has potential
!ntfs-3g
(in sarge-backports)
which is my point… with a “wide open” market you can pick from many different codecs and select the level of quality over size blah blah blah… with flash you are stuck with shitty highly compressed crap because the end system (flash player) can’t handle it… if that’s not the reason then flash just plain and simple sucks and looks like crap
exactly. competition good. Monopoly bad.
IF flash could get some quality stuff together THEN I would agree… and allow the codecs to be free
once again: Your lack of imagination shouldn’t limit my options.
Browse around tv-links.co.uk … many are very good quality.
I’m fairly certain apple.com’s movie trailer site doesn’t add that one
That was one of them The other is teamtalk.com
yeah … right. You know people are encoding video to 720p and 1080i nowadays, yeah?
try apple traliers and see REAL quality.. not some shite your blind ass tolerates
They are worse quality than some of the flash video’s I’ve watched *shrug* Choppy on full screen……..
I can selectively choose bad videos to refer to that will support my arguement also, but that isn’t very honest
Thanks alot! Thanks!
thank ameyer he suggested it
so your computer’s speed determines the quality of the video file?
Thanks ameyer ! Now I just have to see if I will understand how to do it brb
chop is a bad decoder or broken audio/video setup, unless you’re cooking with an old machine. But yeah, x264 ius very cpu-hungry. That’s how it looks so good..
yeah fearl I was also thinking your machine was to be blamed for the lack of quality on those trailers… because they are pretty awesome considering their size
Anyway, with sites like YouTube/Google Video/alluc.org/MySpace Video’s/tv-links.co.uk… even some porn sites… Flash is going NO WHERE… this is really a moot discussion.
ZOMG. the 486 box in the corner of the high school’s computer lab is ruining the quality of my DVDs!!
almost ALL chop comes from a broken audio setup, or using the wrong video overlay (or none) windows is pretty good in that regard, actually.
I use flash more than I use my TV, probably…
it’s not a discussion about what IS; it’s a discussion about what could be.
windows is also not going anywheres… doesn’t mean it’s not crap no wonder you can’t tell good video when you see it exactly…
Choice is not always a good thing.
crappy people hurting themselves or lipsyncing to some bad song doesn’t need great quality
i disagree most wholeheartedly.
LOL, you a military man?
at the vest least, I’d like to choose whether I get a choice.
Ask your mother to decide a desktop to use, then tell me it’s not bad.
why let your mother decide for you?
lack of choice != sane defaults
honestly for her it’s better… I would have HELL if my mother tried to use linux and besides, her slot machine games wouldn’t load
you COULD argue flash is a sane default - but I disagree
does anybody plays ‘nethack’ ?
my mum uses debian
Sane defaults are judged by those creating the defaults, not generally by the people intended to use it… thus is flawed.
irrelevant.
mine uses windows and can’t even install a printer on that… you think she’s got a rat’s chance in a snake farm of doing it in Linux!!
Bogus8, maybe it might be easier on linux?
So does mine… she uses the system I set up for her, and asks no questions because everything works for her… because I didn’t give her choice, other than to use Linux.
does anybody plays ‘nethack’ ?
hell, no… I hate printers on linux.. drives me to pulling my hair out EVERY damn time!
my mum is about equally crap on windows and debian, but the latter means I can at least ssh in and fix her shit the plural of `anecdote’ is not `data’
lol, I remote in also… but she lives like 5 miles away and I get a free meal
Bogus8, the only one I’ve tried to install was in ubuntu, I chose to add a printer, then selected the model, and it was pretty boring actually since I haven’t needed to mess with it since
!anyone use nethack?
No, no one uses nethack, not even the people who use it.
I’ve had laser printers that had .deb packages and all… still crap!
ugh
and the instructions were 3 pages long
must be a brother
well, I haven’t actually tried to use the scanner on the printer/copymachinething I have I bet it is a bit trickier to fix
I’m all for linux bashing the crap out of MS, but honestly it’s not user friendly enough… I even put Ubuntu on this laptop and had all the same issues as with debain… touchpad was SLOW as hell blah blah blah… lots of quirks that you dont’ ahve to deal with in windows… sadly that is why it’s hard to get people over
My point is, making things more simple for people is NOT a bad thing… and you should just accept that it will become a standard, I would bet that it’ll be as popular or moreso than PDF in a few years…
windows has its own quirks to deal with
I can’t honestly recommend secure linux web hosting to the majority of the people I talk to I agree but the basics function
not necessarily a bad thing, right. But simplification to the exclusion of options IS a bad thing. Monocultures are vulnerable.
basics function if you don’t care that you’re using a system that is entirely closed, run by a corporation with mixed intentions
go laser printers!
Sorry for being off-topic, but how do I ignore a person? I really HATE this guy.
I even tried putting a linux system on one of my offshore platforms so they couldn’t break it as easy and I could remote in WAY easier vs remote desktop over satellite (SLOW)… and it didn’t work
/ignore nick, usually
!tell x_link about ignore
depends on your irc client/. try /ignore nick
their excel sheets had so much formatting form corporate that they couldn’t print them
When I run gnome-control-center, it changes all of my GTK fonts, which I’ve specified in ~/.gtkrc-2.0. Why? How do I change them back?
Would you argue this so much if the discussion was about PDF? When it first came out you likely would have, before it was accepted, probably.
that’s all I use baby!
haha. nm what dpkg said. just /help ignore
yeah!
Thanks!
I 3 my hp clj 4550dn
fuck yeah, I hate adobe’s fucked-up pdf evilness.
hehehe ok
!adobe
i heard adobe is now the company distributing the flash plugin, see http://wiki.debian.org/FlashPlayer for installing that flash plugin on debian systems, or http://feayn.org/~lewis/adobe.txt
like I said, I would LOVE to see linux take off… I’m just stating a fact from the mindless average consumer point of view/use
see that last link ‘
So now I will never see his nick right?
pdf’s better than the alternative
but I *do* love PDFs. I just want them to actually all be made to an open spec. ubut I *do* love PDFs. I just want them to actually all be made to an open spec./u hopefully.
I will never see him writting etc.? Wow, thanks!
Right now, Flash is the best method for delivering media, just as PDF was the best way to deliver documents… thus will only gain in popularity until something better comes along.
bullshit.
agree 100% because they are a pain in the ass to fuck with right now… but a great uniform platform to start from
Bogus8, I installed linux on my sister’s computer, she was against it but I convinced her man that linux is the way to go and will suffice for them perfectly. I installed a dual boot win/ubuntu for them on a laptop and after fixing a couple of little details remotely, they haven’t had any problems since
it’s the most widely distributed, but not necessarily the best.
I thought PDF was an open standard…
YIPPIE! my rtl8185 based wireless adapter has GPL drivers direct from realtek
it is, but adobe goes ahead and adds proprietary extensions so people pay $$$$ for acrocrap
right… YOU installed it and worked out the kinks… the average person can actually install windows pretty easily but no way could they do that with linux the drivers being the worst part of it all
well, other than the pesky “thou shalt respect our DRM flags or else” licensing term’
i cant get more than one resolution after installing nvidia driver, what am i doing wrong?? here is my xorg.conf: http://pastehere.com/?onurnr
awesome
In that way Flash and PDF are similar… I wasn’t speaking from a technical standpoint, most every box has support for both… it is the most widely used, thus best way to ensure people can open it.
actually, I’d love for ODF to take off the problem is, what on Windoze reads it?
Technically, ODF is a mess imo… very ugly format :/
i accept the statement that flash and pdf are similar IF you go back to the time when pdf wasn’t an open standard.
Damn, this /ignore is really nice
OO.o? anything else?
what’s even better, is it’s free after rebates. (and they’re allready in the mail last week)
Bogus8, yeah, there are kinks (though they were so minor that “normal” windows behaviour is worse)
heh, sweet.
yes, if I want to allow everyone to be able to look at crap with ZERO effort flash is the way to go.. but if I actually have some pride in my work and want to show it off the way it was meant to look then I RUN from flash!
oo.o = odf
I am trying to use my s-video on my thinkpad laptop. It works fine with atitvout in CLI only, but in X it can’t even detect that I have a TV out
Adobe only just acquired control of Flash, I see Flash going in the same direction as PDF… Adobe isn’t stupid enough to try to limit its acceptance…
as stated, I WANT linux to bust loose… I just know the trouble I’ve had on this brand new toshiba tecra m3 laptop and it’s like MAN wtf! and I’ve been using X’less linux for 3 years
you sure you aren’t talking about OOXML (Microsoft’s “open” xml format, for extremely small values of “open”)?
that would be positive. What’s really needed is free alternatives which actually work, and that requires a stable and well-documented spec.
OOXML is a cleaner format, but there are questions regarding Microsofts intentions with it….
I bet adobe will release such a spec just as they roll out proprietary flash extensions.
lol
ooxml has evil legalese. That’s reason enough to avoid it.
Bogus8, well, now that Fista has arrived, I bet linux gets more users
anyway, I have to get back to writing my paper
no doubt, I would rather give people linux than that ball of crap!
I’ve had some problems with certain laptops too
bull
though worse problems with vista, hah
Agreed, more documentation, and alternative implementations would be ideal… but the latter at least is happening… GNU got Java GPL’ed because of the push they put into Classpath, most of that focus is now going to flash via Gnash
if you’ve got Office’s source code sitting around, perhaps
Have you looked at the formats?
well … it’s not properly GPLed yet (is it?)
OOXML has all sorts of “do this like Word 95 did it” types of things
was network manager like removed or kept back??? nm-applet ? it disappeared after a dist-upgrade
argh, evil.
IceTea apparently is very complete… but no, OpenJDK isn’t currently complete.
is there voipstunt in linux?
!jump
How high?
no, but there’s a dpkgstunt well, I don’t know actually.
ignorant
voipstunt web page seems, uh, weird they give you free landline calls, huh?
you could search. see what dpkg told you !pkgstats
i believe you can read english?
!packagestats
Sun did however open source (under the GPL no less, to work with Classpath - even having Classpaths exception) everything they controlled, so in my opinion it is a success… and who’s to say that Java 7 isn’t based on the IceTea work?
I can, just that looks like some phisher site to me, or pretty lame otherwise e I especially like the “NO adware, malware, spyware” banners, heh
IcedTea*
with 2-3 DVDs full of debian packages, I’m not going to bother. either use the ’search’ fishing pole, or do without. that’s unless you want to pay someone…
yes, joga, it’s a trap debian.org is much better debian is alot better than voip
well, I’ll brb, I go to reboot to windows to program my fta (something linux can’t do yet ) :p
slapfaceware, do you absolutely necessarily have to use voipstunt and skype for example won’t do? Bogus8, bye then
lol
You’re recommending Skype over Google Talk? :/
(though skype linux client is pretty crap) you get sound in google talk (on linux)?
yes, i have to use voipstunt
skype is another thing which is evil and wrong
That I agree with What is the project doing SIP, and open source?
slapfaceware, well then you probably can read english too, and the system requirements for voipstunt on the webpage
OpenMeeko or something?
not sure how well voip progs would run under wine or such
Skype is a joke, please don’t recommend it.
I didn’t recommend it
there are several, but yeah, I think it’s something like that.
It’s in Debian, I just can’t recall its name… it’s VERY nice though… written in Qt on all platforms
I would just like some prog to chat with mom and siblings a couple of times in a year, so that the client won’t crash and preferably I could get video calls too what would be the Good voip program to use on linux then?
i cant get more than one resolution after installing nvidia driver, what am i doing wrong?? here is my xorg.conf: http://pastehere.com/?onurnr
!openwengo
taime1, you only have one resolution configured, seems to me taime1, add modes to line 123 to get more
the problem is that i only get 800×600
oh
i have had it where all res listed
!openwengo is a community of enthusiasts and developers, creating free software products related to communication over IP, see http://www.openwengo.org/
okay, fearl
i tried it most recently with just one
umm *gulp* anyone know if there is a driver to support ext3 in windows
Wengo is _very_ nice.
Bogus8, yeah, at least read I think Bogus8…and I don’t know how reliable it is I wouldn’t mess with the root fs at least hehe
seems like being an open format they would have both, but hey, beggers can’t be choosers
fearl, does it have proper encryption and can I call my mom’s skype with it?
so I shouldn’t edit menu.lst with it? LOL
You should inform your Mom about the standards used by Wengo.
Bogus8, heh, you could try. I just haven’t, so I can’t say I remember reading some files but never writing
Skype uses NO standards what so ever… Wengo can also do video chats etc etc.
ok nice I was trying to find a client that would support video for both linux and windows guess this might do
just wondering as sometimes I’d like to get into my windows on this laptop remotely and I could edit menu.lst to get it to boot by default but I want to be able to get back (remotely)
apt-cache show wengophone … also, Kopete and aMSN both support video…
yeah but I don’t have kopete and only use msn if I have some very good reason, and mom doesn’t use neither didn’t know that aMSN supports it though, it seemed like a very simple program last time I tried
hah. building r8180 module… why’d the source go poof? lol http://rafb.net/p/3sSobe84.html
Wengo is likely your best choice then…
probably
is there a possibility to find out if I have installed amd64 or 32bit debian?
uname -a
dpkg –print-architecture
4 CEST 2007 x86_64
AMD64 Did you really need to paste that though? You couldn’t tell from the output?
hmm, I have a nx6325 an bought 4GB ram. The bios shows 4GB but Debian just 2.8GB ???
haha
Does it use himem or whatever? cat /boot/config-`uname -r` | grep MEM Throw that onto a pastebot
is there a way to disable ctrl+alt+fx when xscreensaver is locked?
!uuoca fearl
?
useless use of cat award
*shrug* makes more sense in my head :/
grep MEM /boot/config-`uname -r`
grep MEM /boot/config-$(uname -r)
ok posted it in #pastebot
ugh… !tell dobby about paster
ok
but… ‘grep CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G /boot/config-`uname -r`, if that says =y … then there shouldn’t be an issue.
Uhh… fun… I have a 32bit system currently, I don’t see anything applicable there… Then 64bit is supposed to allow it anyways though
so what? I don’t understand that? Do I have a 64bit or 32bit debian installed? uname shoes the amd64 arch shows x86_64 so why can’t i adress the full 4GB? and what about this HIGHMEM4G issue. thought that this is just for 32bit systems
I dunno… no reason I know of. Apparently it is
is there a way to have /etc/shadow use sha-256 or higher?
pam_unix2; YMMV
is there a gui frontend for scp?
thank you
hi; /etc/group is driving me crazy. If i do “adduser USER GRP” it says “USER already belongs to group GRP”, but if I enter “groups” in a shell, it does not list my user as being part of GRP. furthermore, I cannot exec files owned by xxx:GRP with 750 rights. What I am doing wrong ?
is that what I would use to “encrypt”/”hash” whatever it’s called a password that I need to store in a script?
hope this hasn’t been asked too many times but.. how safe is using the partition resizing tool on debian netinst 4.0 to resize an existing windows partition? (that takes up the whole hd)
is there another place where groups are stored than /etc/group ?
for that you should probably just use echo “password” |sha256sum
ok, so sha256sum is what I need to read up on it doesn’t need to be incredibly secure… just don’t want plain text
hello
sha256 is secure
roger.. thanks
this isn’t a debian question per se, but I figure someone around here has to know. My cpu (an AMD 64 X2 5200+ Windsor) is listed with a maximum temperature of 55-70C. So, I’m wondering…which is it? 55? or 70? Anyone understand how these specs work? I looked at their whitepaper and it has a chart equating max temperature to TDP, I have no idea what that’s about.
CPUs start to die above about 60°C so it’s very likely to lower end of that scale the
the problem is that your CPU temperature is not evenly spread accross the die
right
if the outer casing is 50°C, probably some places of the die are already at 85°C
you can’t trust your instruments
exit
it might SAY it’s 55°C, but you have no way of knowing
fuck, man, it’s been a while. good to see you’re still around
hey, sup! i’m avoiding writing a methodology review which is due tonight
since i’ve stopped coming in here, i noticed that you took over my place as #1 curse user….well done
Guerin, yeah, I had read about that part. But still, it gives me an idea of how well the fan/heatsink are working. and this case Id say not well at all bGuerin, yeah, I had read about that part. But still, it gives me an idea of how well the fan/heatsink are working. and this case Id say not well at all/b
the best CPU temperature monitoring uses a diode inside the die itself, but as i said the temperature is not even on the die so it is not very reliable
you back on a boat? bah you back on a boat?
Moxx, you may also need to know that the failure rate of the electronic components increase exponentially with the temperature they are used at
no, i’m completely out of the navy and will never be called back. i’ve just been really busy with work
heh, nice
I ran two processes of folding@home to see what it does with this new heatsink/fan. it got up to be 59 before I freaked out and stopped
so.. can I use the debian partition resizing tool during installation to resize an existing windows partition?
yeah, me too they promoted my arse to mannijment
I think 59°C is OK but you shouldn’t reach more than 65°C which seems to be the limit as far as I know
the limit is higher than that last time I checked. But anything above 50 indicates something is wrong IMO uthe limit is higher than that last time I checked. But anything above 50 indicates something is wrong IMO/u
i’m in the strange spot of owning a startup…so i have to work my ass off and not really get the benefits of owning the company quite yet :p
heh. But you’re your own boss!
yes, i kick my own ass. heh
is there a known bug in the debian BTS that causes the summary to contain ‘Will Not Fix’ even though the bugs don’t have that tag? uski, but what about the fact my cpu specs say 55-70? what about those lowest 10 degrees if I let it get to 65? syas max of 55-70 I mean
do you write yourself written warnings for turning up to work drunk?
holy long-ass link batman
god i hope not…i’m drunk right now
oops didn’t realize the link was that long. sorry
jeeebus
tinyurl it?
Im definitely going to buy a new heatsink. I’m just wondering whether I can risk playing any intense games till hten
you’re lucky to not be k/d-lined
these temperatures does not really mean something. Sometimes the temperature is measured on the die itself, sometimes it’s measured with a thermistor on the PCB of the motherboard, sometimes it’s the temperature of the heatsink…
pfft. all CPU’s these days have automatic shutdown anyways
buy new goo, wash the old off with spirits (vodka works fine) and reapply
is blowfish the strongest that pam-unix2 supports? the man page doesnt really say
you can play instense games, but you will increase the odds of a component near the processor failing prematurely
sometimes it’s a measurement somewhere with a semi-arbitrary value added to it
there are some surface mount capacitors on the CPU itself that usually do not like to be heated too much usually the CPU die itself can withstand temperature far higher than 70°C _but_ the performances start to degrade and you may get some system crashes what happen is that the electrical caracterisis of the transistors inside the CPU change with temperature
0″ without crashing, your heat issue isnt a
heh, we have a bona fide EE in the house
o
so, if I set my bios alarm to the lowest setting (which it already is, and I think that’s 65C iirc), then I should be fine until I get a new heatsink?
i think so you can even put 70°C if you want…
overclocking was worthwhile when you could realistically gain 30-50% without any danger or extra cooling gear but nowadays it’s mostly just a waste of time
yea and who needs the 10% extra power ?
right
my computer is a 1.5 GHz and I’m quite happy with that if you don’t play games, you don’t need a powerful computer most people tend to forget this
I used to overclock back in the 2.2 era. But I got tired of never knowing whether it’s the fault of my overclocking any time I ran into some issue
i’ve seen a lot of friends buying some dual core gear just to surf on Google and write some letters
My 20 million row database begs to differ
640k rows should be enough for anybody!
cafuego, you’re right; i fogot to mention that i was speaking of personnal use lol
hey, by West Auckland standards I’m a superb driver
There’s this awful car-crash of a reality show on tv here
hehe. yeah, I was about to say, we run quad Xeon servers at work and we still can’t handle as much as we’d like to
like the other 91% of NZers who claim to be `very good’ or `excellent’ drivers
NZ Highway Patrol
hah, yeah, we have it too.
what are these servers doing ? if not confidential or anything i’m always curious about real-life uses
good to see you too, man. fuck yeah the old school guys are still around that makes me happy
!aww
*snuggles*
sniffing a crapload of traffic
ZOMG you work for the RIAA?
That’s not to say that most of the time my systems don;t idle; they do, but when I need them to do wotk, I want them to do it *fast*
intrusion detection ?
blah blah blah
am i supposed to have “/usr/sbin/termwrap” in my inittab? It doesn’t exist so init keeps giving me errors
hey its markybobdeb
yeah, that’s been a while
no. but I help monitor a huge network
Surely no more than 5 or 10 years?
cafuego, i agree… but i don’t feel the difference between a $350 and $1000 computer nowadays for “classic” computer use
true…i guess we define “a while” differently….
If those are hong kong dollars, I bet you do
heh most pointless currency evar
would someone mind just doing a “grep termwrap /etc/inittab” to see if they have it in their inittab also?
at home I do a lot of image editing, so I need a lot of power. plus I play the occasional game
hell no
no match
any idea how it may have gotten there? is it some kind of attack?
uski, I missed that message. yeah IDS
you can’t imagine how confused i am with currencies, i’ve been living in the USA for ~2weeks, i come from a country which uses Euro, and I regularly buy things in Asia (on the fleabay) and they use all sort of currencies
are you really an ubuntu user faking it on #debian? i have no idea
which IDS do you use ?
markybob no, debian all the way
prelude ? snort ? another one i don’t know ?
uski, I’m not sure that I’m allowed to say
ok don’t say then
It’s a pretty fresh install of etch too… kinda has me worried
i went through about 8 currencies in four months last year while travelling it just gets to the point where you figure out how much a beer costs and measure the value of everything in beer
alright, Im gonna put folding@home back on on each processor and see if my motherboard alarm ever rings
Guerin, another thing I need to get used to is the different taxes system in each country haha I like the idea of using the price of a beer as a universal currency
`bus ride … 150,000 kip … hmm … that’s 15 beers ‘ argh. the system falls apart when you get to places with extreme excise taxes
uski, what really gets to me when I’m in other countries is that their money feels like monopoly money. so, I’m apt to spend freely cus it doesn’t feel real
liek … anywhere not in the third world totally true.
hmm… looks to be some artifact of the install that didn’t get cleaned up correctly. Weird.
it’s not that I can’t convert. I usually memorize the conversion rate as of my arrival. But still, psychologically it just feels like I’m paying them with play money
yup i’ve never experienced that and i wish i will not because i already spend far too much money with “high value” currency..
Moin!
hehe
fortunately for the eBay converts the monopoly money into real money immeduitly
http://www.annodex.net/cgi-bin/man/man2html?termwrap+8
makes me wonder why all of us dont have it. *shrug*
well, /usr/sbin/termwrap doesn’t exist in ANY debian package. It must be a low level install thing that gets cleaned up, except mine didn’t.
ask #debian-boot on irc.debian.org
Ok, didn’t know that existed. I have my problem solved I guess (I Just edited the inittab), but I have no idea how that got left there.
it’s play money wherever you go
what is the best backup program, amanda bacula or something else? for a SOHO setup of about 5 computers mixed linux/windows environment.
simonrvn, you’re not about to go on a ron paul trip are you?
Who’s “Ron Paul”?
ron paul?
depends on your needs. take a look at http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/
what do most people use for UPS monitoring software… kind of upset my server died during the last power outage
he’s a nutty US presidential candidate from the looney right that believes in, among other things, abolishing the Federal Reserve and going back to the gold standard
both suck. he’s nuts
simplicity and elegance ‘it just works’ are at the top of my needs. markybob, have you used both?
yeah, that’s worth looking into. heh
you mean when the paper is backed my hard currency… the horror
i love how geeks all think libertarianism is the answer to the world’s ills it’s so cute and naïve
i’ve used backuppc…yes. i’m not sure which other you’re including in “both” ui’ve used backuppc…yes. i’m not sure which other you’re including in “both”/u
hello ricka
here come the trolls…blah blah blah
heh political trolls are my day job (and my research at the moment)
bacula
well, their can’t be a right if there isn’t a wrong… so it takes all kinds
never used that
as long as you remember that three lefts make a right, you’re good to go
the girl I’m dating does the opposite… ONLY makes rights!
hehehe
simonrvn:
what do most people use for UPS monitoring software? obviously something that can signal a halt
my wife has a reversed sense of left and right, and often does the opposite when I say “left”
i dont see a need for UPS monitoring software if your UPS is any good
“NO!, the other left!” bah
is she a elementary school teacher?
‘
Guerin, heh yeah Bogus8, no, but could be
my mother teaches first grade so she often holds up her left when she says right
my lady does too. she looks at her hands then she gets them straight. is she ambidextrous?
kids mimic what they see
no, she’s just a woman.
go away
ha
typical male superiority bullshit
simonrvn, I think there was some explanation for such, I know a couple others who have the same thing =
that wasnt male superiority bullshit. i cant cook worth shit…
yeh. i did too for a while, up until my teens *plonk*
heh
simonrvn, right handed
in that case, then his statement was actually funny vs how I first thought of it
no, just a moron !plonk
plonk is, like, the sound that a name makes when hitting the ignore list or or killfile. Plonk is British and Canadian slang for cheap wine. “Rodney, you plonker.”
in a sardonic manner it’s funny
well guys, thanks for the info. I’m gonna get going
are you a deluge user?
ORLY?
i heard orly is an internet slang, short for “Oh, really?”, mainly used to indicate sarcasm or acknowledgement of obviousness.Synonymous with a white snow owl: http://www.hjo3.net/orly/gal1/orly_owl.jpg
nope. Is that a bittorrent client?
yeah it is
!deluge
well, deluge is a pygtk bittorrent client co-developed by our very own markybob. visit http://www.deluge-torrent.org for more
:p
I knew I knew that name
eew, BOTH python AND gtk
but it doesn’t have DHT so it doesn’t interest me
i use rtorrent
that’s bullshit. it has dht
i user headless azureus and webui
eech, azureus
I couldn’t find that I dont’ think… wait it doesn’t do headless… maybe that was why i strayed away from really looking at it I refuse to use a GUI for something like that… so it works well if it didn’t use java it would be great
0.6 branch does, which is our development branch
i use rtorrent for that reason
I get great speed ZERO impact on my real computer and I can use it from anywhere in the world
yeh
look up… no DHT, no interest to me
rtorrent is shit. i’m biased, yeah, but still :p
I had rtorrent for a while, it just wasn’t getting the peers and seeds that were REALLY out there
i ran a distro site doing 100GB outbound daily, serving a dir containing ~20G of data to thousands of users on rtorrent - on a p3-733 with 384MB ram which doubled as a media station AND served KDE sessions for my wife
Hi When I boot debian’s kernel I can import my photos with gthumb from my canon powershot, but when I run my custom kernel built with make-kpkg then I can do that only with root account ? Whats wrong ?
THAT is what I call performance
I run that headless azureus on a 866mhz, 512mb machine and it only hits like 30% on resources… not too bad given specs and that java crap
wikipedia’s page has deluge listed as the #2 client when it comes to features, second only to azureus…which, really, is a bloated pos
when I was on windows I like utorrent… benefits of azureus w/o the bloat!
deluge also runs on windows not like it matters. i have no idea why people use windows in the first place
I agree, it’s WAY less resource intensive… but also doesn’t get me what I need so I’ll take the hit to get what I need
hi all,
well, maybe at the office I might try it out… I really do like utorrent though uwell, maybe at the office I might try it out… I really do like utorrent though/u I have my own IP
we’re better. i’ve run benchmarks and deluge uses less ram than utorrent with multiple torrents active. http://www.slurdge.org/deluge-on-windows
rtorrent is your friend
the usuall method of installing through iso image is, just download the ISO image and buron it to CD, and then install. And now if I want to burn the iso image into the usb stick, as i dont have a cdrom drive provision, then waht is the procedure for me
despite what markybob says
how many torrents?
heh i tested with 3
will my iso image that i need to burn into the usb stick will remain the same or do i need to change te iso image for usb iso image ?
is that what the bencmark was done with?
See, I run rtorrent with on average about 50 torrents.
yeh
mostlu uploading, though
afaik i’m the only one who’s done any such benchmark, and yes, i tested it with 3
10 is light
shound’t all postscript printers work on linux? i’m ordering a HP T1100ps plotter and the specs say nothing about linux support but since it’s postscript, it should work ok, right?
when you got the bandwidth eh?
how can do this task of using an existing iso image to put into usb stick and install from it, instead of using cd
yes.
yes
50 at 1Kb/sec is only 50Kb/sec
I’ll give it ago if I need to d/l something to work what’s the point then
but in the worst case scenario it will only be able to print .ps/.eps files, or will it print just about anything?
I’m not saying mine are that slow
what is the recommended UPS monitoring software? (APC if that matters)
i’m fairly clueless on these printer issues
no, the job of a print server is to make stuff into postscript
you are not alone
Just that you don’t ned to be a mad bandwidth freak to run 50 torrents
!info apcupsd
can someone tell me detail information to put in sources.list to update from woody to sarge
(APC UPS Power Management (daemon)), section admin, is extra. Version: 3.14.1-3 (sid), Packaged size: 247 kB, Installed size: 812 kB
but if you aren’t handing out 10k/sec are you really helping?
Guerin, ok, so the printer convers everything sent to it to postscript before it prints it?
Of course
I mean on a rare torrent then sure it’s great, I’ll take what I can get!
or do i have to install a seperate print server on a windows box or something?
thanks for the dpkg info
yes. no. you’ll be fine
a print server is something you install on a local machine. Like cups.
Guerin, oh, ok, thanks alot
(or you can have it on a remote machine attached to the printer if you like)
i know it may sound stupid but… is there any way to discover a possible rootkit on my machine, except from comparing original files?
vanksi; linuxprinting.org ?
wow, am i reading this right?? x windows is a server!?!?
rkhunter or chkrootkit
no, the x window system contains a server and clients
install those and read their docs
no
oh
there is no such thing as “x windows”
the x *server* is a server
X is a network-transparent windowing system, it does not care if clients are local or remote.
Rat409, i’ll check it out, but thanks a lot everyone
if it contains both the client and server, does that mean i can not have the server on another pc in my network, and simply run programs as clients on another? oh
have you ever run linux?
yes, im running it now lol
yes, and display them on the machine that runs the server. Easily done via ssh.
yes.
i just couldnt understand the terminology
ssh -X remotehost then run any X app.
this is the single bestest coolest thing about x
Well, perhaps not ut2007
thank you very much
pansy
gerbera
lol, i dont care about running games on linux, i just want to set up all of my linux PCs without having to install X on every single one of them.
hrm.
you don’t *have* to install X on any of them
that’s what ssh is for :p
remember: the x server is installed on the machine you look at. The clients live on the other machines.
