and if you play an mp3, do you hear sound?
Aha! I knew there was a reason for the Canadian dollar reaching parity with the US! “but it means us Canucks will get cheaper Macs as the Canadian prices get closer to US prices with every new release”. Its so we can get cheaper Macs!
using digital data extrqction ?
just wondering, does the debian version of ion3 contain the xft patch? under a different name or some such?
how do I make it so that eth0 us if’uped automatically if it’s connected ?
soh when I use gnome cd player I here sound lol
you mean after you boot ?
!ifplugd
it has been said that ifplugd is a laptop users best friend. ifplugd is a daemon which will automatically configure your ethernet device when a cable is plugged in and automatically unconfigure it if the cable is pulled.
so kscd in kde does not work for me LOL
man interfaces
t0mb0y, err, I’m asking about ion3, a window manager
so now to figure out sound for dvd play!
yes oh cool thanks a lot
hi
Hello everybody, I’m using anjuta 2.2.1 with sid, how do I get the svn plugin ?
everyone donwnloaded update for debian etch?
the developer flips out if someone patches his wm, (and changed his license to reflect that) and I see its been moved to non-free, but I was wondering if there was a renamed version (since its over a trademark issue) which is prepatched to use xft instead of xlib
is there some place in /proc where the current battery status is hiding?
/proc/acpi/battery/BAT0
hmmm
OK, so I have a new box, using lenny. I want to use linux-image-2.6.20-xyz, but lenny has 2.6.21-6 … where can I find a stash of old kernel packages? (or does this stash even exist?)
i have eliminated that bothersome delay when opening webpages. i have also determined that comcast dns servers must be overloaded. solution: your very own local dns server. it’s like magic.
aah, I bet that’s it, piix is getting there first your very own squid proxy running in nullfs mode is worth the effort too
then i will have to figure out exactly what that means
I have a machine with kernel-image-2.6.8-3-686-smp loaded on it and everything works fine. When I try to upgrade to linux-image 2.6.18-5-486 my 3com NIC stops working even though the 3c59x module is loaded. Anybody know why? I’ve modprobed my brains out and I’m really stuck… (I use the smp kernel to take advantage of RAM)
how exactly does it stop working ? what kind of output do you get ?
check and make sure it’s still the eth you think it was 2.6.8 is pre-udev; 2.6.18 is post-udev.
I’ve done ifconfig eth0 down and then ifconfig eth0 up - ifconfig just shows lo
lsmod | grep -i net
stops working in that it won’t ping anything and doesn’t show up when I issue the ifconfig command - where I usually see the NIC listed…
sorry, lspci | grep net
lsmod gives me ip_conntrack lspci gives me the info on the 3com 3c905b that works fine under kernel-image-2.6.8-3-686-smp I appreciate the help!
what interfaces get listed with a ifconfig -a ?
I see what you’re saying about which eth it could be - I see my interface showing up as eth2. It is NOT a multi-homed system so I’m confused here… I also see “sit0″ which I’ve never seen before…
!z25
somebody said z25 was as of version 0.090, udev has the ability to staticly rename ethernet cards based on MAC address. the addresses are configured in /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules . If you want the mappings to change, edit that file. if you don’t want udev to touch your interface names, remove that file and z45_persistent-net-generator.rules in the same directory
Is there a reason I *would* want udev to be renaming my interfaces?
yes
/proc/acpi/embedded_controller/EC0/info has the contents: “gpe: 0×17; ports: 0×66, 0×62; useglobal lock: no” Does my laptop computer have an embedded controller?
bus probe order isn’t guarenteed; what you’re experiencing is in fact evidence of that; it’s changed, between 2.6.8 and 2.6.18, directly, for you.
Good enough for me. Let me get to editing that file…. Huh. So it’s found something BEFORE the NIC on that bus that it wants to see as eth0?
yes
Far out. I would have expected something like that in a 2.6 to 2.7 or something.
do firewire ports get seen as ethernet-able by linux kernels ?
my server is booting. i love all of you
http://kerneltrap.org/node/3513
So is the moral here to assign interface names via MAC address in the udev config files from now on?
YAY IT WORKES
zigagly not just NIC names
Ah, bitchin’ link
*any* bus to namespace transform.
Hello. Is it possible to run Debian installer in a live system? (I have a headless computer without CD-rom drive, but I have managed to get into a system by using PXE boot)
It’s a brave new world! I can understand why this is when you’ve got three NIC’s in a machine (and I’ve got two that do) - not sure I see the point otherwise, but that’s why Smart Guys and Gals develop the kernel for us, no?
now wrap your head around what “the right thing to do” is for a cPCI card cage, a blade server, or a docking station.
buzer, probably. i know you can pxe-boot the debian installer with the net install images
Failure trying to run: chroot /etc/lvm/wryyy mount -t proc proc /proc”
Ah, good point. Glad my head is fairly flexible… “I can see clearly now udev is done…”
what did I do wrong if my sarge box complaoned that /dev/md0 was non-existent at boot-time, then dropped me into a shell and I had to “/etc/init.d/mdadm-raid start” to fix it ?
since this particular machine is our non-mobile samba server could I just do away with udev?
you could do, but you’ll be pushing the proverbial uphill
Adapt or die - I can dig it.
the world really really wants to go udev; you do too
I can be a good German. =8^)
hmm, time for a small experiment
uhh does anyone know how i can get the root terminal to output pretty colours like it does with the normal user?
infinity0 check out the .bashrc or .profile in your normal user’s home directory
alias ls=’ls –color’
with a recent dist-update (debian unstable), my GTK theme was somehow changed… I think I had a Gnome default theme; does anyone know what its name was?
alias ls to ls –color=auto
oh right ok cheers hehe, thankses ^_^
or does anyone know what the default gnome theme is now (in debian unstable)
it’s already there in root’s .bashrc, just uncomment it
ahh ok
does anyone know if there’s a renamed version of ion3 with xft enabled in the repos?
hi, got a problem installing locales, depends glibc-2.3.2.ds1-22sarge6 broken packages
hi there i need a hand installing jre in firefox 2 any ideas ?
no, it’s disabled because of non ttf support
i wrote a manual that sayd about /usr/java but when i installed jre there is nothing in usr with that name , and also the plugin.so to link to firefox directory
hark, ah thanks . Damn, no version of ion3 that can use my fancy-ass fonts.
anybody about that locales problem ?
what debian version?
firefox2 hark, the last one hark, i downloaded the package and installed
install sun-java5-plugin (in non-free)
hark, its all ready installed
!tell Bart1 about bat
hark the trouble is how to make firefox work with jre hark debian 4
how value 19 compares to -20 in top’s NI column ?
hark, im using debian 4
i aint ketting info about bat * getting
/msg dpkg bat
hark, dunno where is the java modules to firefox
hi
ok
hark told you which package to install
somebody knows how to install unrar?
!unrar
somebody said unrar was a non-free package and a command used to extract .rar archives, or ask me about unrar-free
shouldn’t have to do anything, the plugin get installed in the right places
pickcoder, i have all ready installed
dpkg -l |grep java
No packages found matching |grep java
runt hat fuck off
you too, you cunt
if you install firefox from source, dpkg may have a hard time auto-configuring the plugin for you
hark yes but i have the firefox in /home/firefox *(binary)
but i’m looking to unrar-nonfree, and i can’t install the package
is there a plugin dir anywhere?
dpkg told you where to look tell [KruscheV] about non-free
/etc/alternatives/iceweasel-javaplugin.so
Hi at all. How does secure linux web hosting number the NICs? I had a Card A, removed it and inserted another NIC but now this NIC is named eth1, not eth0? Any hints?
undet udev
hark, well im firefox 2 instead iceweacel , anyway i ll check that directory if exist firefox 2.0.0.6
/etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules
/etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules and reboot
or you can edit it if you want
make sure to report “allow hotplug” from /etc/network/interfaces meh s/report/remove report on this.. edit this report and change that.. show me where “report” is…
can you perhaps take a quick peek @ http://paste.debian.net/37610
hark, yes , there is the plug in let me do a ln
to bring it up on boot.. you don’t need the allow hotplug statements
helo: thanks for the hint, works. Thank you
ok, so you got it from mozilla.. then symlink from wherever it expects the plugin to /etc/alternatives/iceweasel-javaplugin.so
hark, not working firefox crashes
heh
sorry pressed wrong button
is there anyway to communicate with IPSEC protocol vpn under debian?
cat /etc/debian_version
Ah, this is why I never had this behaviour before. Copy&pasted my /etc/network/interfaces from my Laptop with PCMCIA NIC
bvecause openvpn is ssl
then pastebin your /etc/apt/sources.list
3.1 is the version
i believe im going to install easywaeacel again tho
I can install it from a tar.gz thanks for all
sources.list http://paste.debian.net/37612
you should only have udev installed on Etch+. you don’t want hotplug and udev installed at the same time
Hello
!info locales sarge
can’t remember to install hotplug manually. So I should apt-get remove it?
(GNU C Library: National Language (locale) data [support]), section base, is standard. Version: 2.3.2.ds1-22sarge6 (sarge), Packaged size: 3893 kB, Installed size: 10372 kB
right, so sarge6 is not for me ?
dpkg -l libc6
ii libc6 1.6-15 ultra s3kr1t #debian package
dpkg, shh
no, what does apt-cache policy locales libc6 say?
you’re on Etch?
Yes
yeah you don’t need hotplug with udev er..you shouldn’t have hotplug with udev installed
okay, then I’ll try to remove it. But i want to mention, that I haven’t installed it myself
it’s from sarge and early etch
I keep getthing this @#$%ing error: dexconf: error: cannot generate configuration file; shared/default-x-server not set. How do I fix that and get X to configure itself. wtf?!?
…package hotplug is not installed…
you’re fine then
what package does apxs2 come in? it appears to not come with apache2. or am i missing something very obvious?
why did you thought, I have it installed?
I didn’t.. just stating that you shouldn’t have both and to remove the hotplug directions from interfaces
packages.debian.org
Is there a any VPN server /client using IPSEC on debian ? someone should know the answer please?
okay, thank you again
ok, you’ve got etch’s libc6 installed
search enging for files at bottom of page of course there are some
thanks.
how you see that ?
could you give me the most used one
don’t know how it happend
you can search packages for keywords at packages.debian.org… search for ipsec
!info libc6 etch
(GNU C Library: Shared libraries), section libs, is required. Version: 2.3.6.ds1-13etch2 (etch), Packaged size: 4588 kB, Installed size: 10804 kB
eek I just noticed that
i know there are a couple of different ones… freeswan and openswan… one of which is not longer maintained and got forked
is that an official repos?
if you read the wikipedia pages for them you can get more info
mirror from my hosting company
yup it is
i can’t tell you much because i got moved off the project here are work where i would have learned how to do it and put on something totally different
so i should uninstall that libc6 ? and install the one for sarge
which kernel do you have?
and then locales will work? 2.6.14-2-k7-smp
hi
that’s not really supported, if you can and don’t want to reinstall.. upgrade to etch. /msg dpkg sarge-etch
is that pretty safe ? i mean, its a running server not really important httpd can go down for 5 mins
etch is the current stable version
i mean upgrading can’t afford to reboot, (remote hands)
sarge won’t be supported after ~ Apr 08 you need to upgrade can you set up a failover machine and route traffic to it?
i know we got language translators working overtime but what about translating to American Sequential alogorithms for understanding its complex logic? *IMPORTANT*
bah its not that important kind of scared of the switch just read the release notes reboot will be required for newer kernel maybe i’ll think about doing it tonight can be good practice
heh
but perhaps i first compile my own preffered kernel also will be first time
you should recompile critical applications to fit your CPU if you going to do all of that
like what ?
apache?
it only runs lighttpd, mysql and 3 gameservers
oh heh
so you mean like compiling lighttpd for that cpu arch and not using an apt version
definately don’t want the game servers going down… yeah
yeah they can go down dont care of those httpd also wont be missed to much and i have an sort of kvm will be one heck of experiment to bad to waste uptime 374days or i should run a virtualisation program and run new httpd and mysql in virtual box maybe also gameservers, but think they will lag
hello for cpu amd 32 bit use cd debian i386?
yes
ok
how much speed-increase should a typical optimation from i386 to… say amd-k7 bring?
hey I am trying to write a test program that connects to a database via odbc, and some of these calls are returning things that are not mentioned as possible… specifically th I’ll sometimes get a return value of 100
gryfie i wonder too
that’s a wild turkey shoot. it really depends on the code you’re compiling
got an opteron 146 wondering if stock kernel will do fine
is there a quick way to undo a ‘apt-get build-dep’ command?
Of course, but maybe you can give some examples….. say displaying videos in vlc or firefox
hey, how do I create extra serial devices using udev? I have ttyS0 to ttyS3 already, comprised of the two standard ports on the mobo and a 2-port expansion card. I just plopped in another 2-port card, and now I need to create ttyS4 and ttyS5.
I don’t have any benchmarks
and there’s nowhere I’ve seen yet that talks about such a return value… I normally compare to SQL_SUCCESS, SQL_SUCCESS_WITH_INFO, SQL_INVALID_HANDLE and SQL_ERROR
geo-rge can it be this doesn’t belong in an OS channel ?
do ls -l on /dev/ttyS[0123] it’s a debian package
i aint really going to finger point, everybody likes help, but i think there are other specialised channels owké then i said nothing
good, point me to one
ok ok, i’ll shut up didn’t mean no offence :d
Salut à tous
“if you don’t find out here, you can visit #thisOtherRoom”
hi all
none taken
great :d
but if you happen to know of a specific place…
hi
I’m already looking at the odbc docs from unixodbc.org and also microsoft’s api docs (never thought I’d ever do that…)
nope sorry mate, just saw you talking bout odbc, so i thought about database channels like mysql but i don’t know sh!t
how can i connect to a site in lftp im reading hte man but im having trouble connecting
np… since the backend is postgres, I’ll check them out at some point
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/7269
what do you try?
open
found this article but looking for an intel article cannot seem to find one at debian.org (http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/powerpc/ch04s04.html.en)
use “help open”
scroll down to the sort example
geo-rge: yeah, ls -l /dev/ttyS[0123] shows those three ports existing. How do I add two more to the mix?
“listing 1″
er, four ports
notice the numbers in the ls -l listing notice one of the numbers doesn’t change, the other increments
got it.
try to use mknod to create a file like that
okay.
I don’t remember the exact thing, you’ll have to check the man page
already there
but the deal is you want the unchanging number in the one place and the next two numbers in the other
how does ‘wake on lan’ work, are there some docs or a factoid or wiki somewhere? can i be at my house and tell some clients computer to turn on, if i set it up properly?
experiment make one, see if it does the right thing
Thx
if not delete it (easy enough) and try again
im connecting but its saying login is incorrect which is isnt i think the site requires ssl wouldnt lftp has ssl included in it
you might have to tell lftp to use ssl certificates hosting somethow s/thow/how/
pickcoder thnx i’m off now ttyl guys
dpkg wake on lan is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wake-on-LAN et al
okay, jetscreamer
oh, and if your torture isn’t bad enough you might have to figure out setserial
how do i get ssl
there might be a debian package called openssh err there might be a debian package called openssl –
hi there, does etch support linux kernel 2.4?
_gAri-: no
apt-cache search ssh | grep open ? err ssl?
bar $1?
howcome everytime I use -any- application under x/kde, it crashes when I try to open any file select dialog?
geo-rge: a problem with your QT library perhaps all KDE applications probably uses the exact same QT function to make that dialog appear
he doesn’t have the ioslaves tell me why i have to be an ioslave
this is not just kde apps, it;s xchat too which is not kde specifically
syntax comment on above?
oh, dpkg the bot… if you want basic help on dpkg the package installer, you can try dpkg –help
geo-rge: no, just on the syntax of cmd:’s
doing that here doesn’t get much results… dpkg –help
Package Manager for Debian. Synopis: dpkg [options] action
I must have them disabled, just curious how it looks
you can use literal sometimes to see the format i never got that down though !literal sacrifice
i did, and I matched it, but its still not working right. even when I try dpkg in msg
!tell Stinger_ -about root yeah i remember the feeling i got a supybot instead
if you’re root, you also can’t talk here not sure what the intent of that was… I would assume that t
hi all!
the root user is trying to get a user going
the factoid says i think
bar $1 or similar (possibly without the cmd
!root
It has been said that root is the administrative account - only use it when root power is needed. So no reading mail, compiling programs, or running applications as root. And don’t even think about irc’ing as root, it increases the danger from exploits and trojans (such as bliss), or see, for example, the security advisory on BitchX http://www.debian.org/security/2003/dsa-306
lol retard question here how to untar a tar.gz? XD
oh gues not
tar zxvf filename.tar.gz
first you ungz then you untar
thx
np
use xfe and right click create tar.gz,bz,nz,xyz…
what are you trying to untar. what file?
cabziprarwhatever well maybe not cab
cabaldabble
mediawiki it worked thx just forgot wich letters are used for it
.
man tar for that
is there any way to install nvidia-glx in debian sid with current xorg?
thanks geo-rge
man tar takes time, quick noobish question here is faster :p
not always
always worth a try
sometimes we will slow you the fuck down
what happens if I try to run etch with a handmade 2.4 kernel? will it hang?
i’ll use different nicks on reconnects ;p
_gAri-: why not install sarge?
there so many noobs, you wont notice the difference 3
the install CD is still available
how do i search for a directory
find / directoryname
find / dirname -type d
in any case, you could try doing man tar now, and see what x, f, z mean if not… whatever
ah
find / xchat -teyp d
ballocks
like that bu spelt correctly
PHP 5.0.0 or higher is required. ABORTING. // PHP 5.2.3-1+b1 (cli) (built: Jun 21 2007 20:58:46)
looks like you’ll have to reconnect now
lol
how the hell do I kill off all the packages installed by apt-get build-dep?
graytron, arrrrrrr
ah common, my php5 to new then? x/
ok this is desperate i need a gui ftp client that has ssl
ey captain, land ahead
good god, this is pathetic
ay
you can checkout your logfiles and use that information to delete those files However you have to know exacly when did you run apt-get build-dep
so xorg is hard locking my machine on startup, anyone have any suggestions on what to look at?
graytron, lol
seriously… you can find out things yourself… this hack you’re doing to save yourself the time of reading is not making your life any easier (while it might make this moment easier)
hence, “pathetic”
what is the point of splitting 127.0.1.1 (with host.domain I entered during install) v 127.0.0.1 (localhost) in default hosts setup?
change to vesa for your x driver
yeah locks on that too
you use aptitude
aptitude doesn’t do that.
it unstalls stuff you don’t need anymore
Failed dependencies: /bin/bash is needed by ec2-ami-tools-1.2-7221.noarch whereis bash /bin/bash /etc/bash.bashrc /usr/share/man/man1/bash.1.gz why rpm doesn’t see bash and other programs /
aptitude won’t even feel the build-dep installed packages.
omfg wiki’s are windows machines only? lame
what’s a rpm?
if you don’t install them with aptitude: of course
build-dep, genius
geo-rge what do mean ? what it does ?
aptitude doesn’t do build-dep
anyone familair with systems setup with debootstrap…know if this could be caused by it? http://dpaste.com/20198/
cause rpm is not really supported in debian. at all
rpm sounds like a redhat thing
i see
eh?
so basically, the “build-dep” command is an invitation to clutter one’s system. hence, “pathetic”
geo-rge well the proggy that I need is available only as rpm
review alien then proceed at your own risk
do you have gpm installed?
“alien - install non-native packages with dpkg”
can anyone help me out here…. trying to get debian installed on my hp dv9008nr laptop…. everything went good except problems with X (that i can handle on my own).. problem im having is the box is freezing randomly… and its not reporting anything to the log to help me??
bah disconnected
do you have gpm installed?
I would run a ram tester for about 24 hours
in fact now i cannot even get it to boot.. keeps freezing at different msgs during bootup…. geo-rge: could it still be a ram issue if the other partition runs vista fine… like ive had it recently running a week straight
hmm no I do not
you guys know of a good interface that would let me browse my xvid movies, and play them in mplayer?
rofl, “use aptitude”
altho if there is a problem with your ram, a ram tester should find problems sooner rather than later
and your gfx card?
nv 8600gts
do you have nvidia’s proprietary drivers installed?
I do, but it still hangs using vesa
if you want boot help, we need to know what “messages” it’s hanging up at
I’d say rule that possibility out before going much further… the package should be memtest86
but is the nvidia kernel driver loaded when using vesa?
geo-rge: my bios has built in mem test… its ok to just use that im assuming correct?
Hi, does anyone know if it’s possible to do a direct map with NFS and automount??
no
ignore the memory issues for the moment and focus on the boot scroll
geo-rge: well i cannot boot into debian to run a memtest….
the good news is that if that doesn’t find a problem, it means your cpu, ram and video are all basically ok
the boot scroll freezing at random parts not even the same area every time
you boot into memtest86 (it’s like a kernel)
random parts like what?
yeah
no, I modprobe it whenever I test it with Driver “nvidia”
i considered something with the testing version and my laptop? figured trying stable????
maybe you should
though ($1): bar $1 is probably what you really want
cant seem to get it to work. wondering how the syntax looks.
but right now it’s exhibiting symptoms that suggest hardware problems
literal cmd: -l (.*?)
(ii $1 (1|2|3).(1|2|3|4|5|6|7|8|9)-(|1)(1|2|3|4|5)(|||.1|.2|.3) ($nick’s private (porn|gamp|stamp) collection|ultra s3kr1t #debian package)|No packages found matching $1)”
geo-rge: i hear ya… but no problems what-so-ever in vista.. now i know that doesnt really rule that out….
foo $1?
exactly
that doesn’t mean shit
I don’t know anything about vista
we are not in ##windows
cmd: factoid (.*?); but yeah.
wols_
hmm, tried that with no luck, unless its cause short addressing is disabled in my config somewhere
how can I list all the packages I’ve instealled (not including the ones debian came with?) thanks!
i’m running out of ideas
well, if it doesn’t work, you may not have cmd factoids enabled
well ill run a memtest…. gonna try stable build first as it could be a quicker fix… thanks for the output guys
heh doh
does late debian install media offer a ram checker option
*sigh*
thats what im thinking, one sec while I check
I expect odine will return
in 24 hours
all the packages you installed (hopefully) came with debian…
where do programs defajult install to like xchat
except: are you absolutely sure nvidia kernel driver isn’t loaded when the machine hard locks?
I can try it now
dpkg -L packagename
just to be doubly sure see you after the reboot
i just want to know to copy some files i want to add to the program
cu
dont see it in the blootbot.config. can you recall what the option was off hand?
you need to buily your own package from source then. man apt-get (apt-get source)
I have a text file in a strange encoding. I want to convert it to UTF-8, but I do not know what encoding it is in now. It has been written in Windows. Do you have any ideas how to approach the problem? The file is available here: http://thomasdamgaard.dk/tmp/bad-coding.tar.gz.
ok, first off… it’s your machine,,, you can do anything you want… BUT
iconv
debian packaging system likes to think it owns certain areas like /usr
wols_, yes. I know how to use iconv, but not when I do not know which encoding the file is in now.
all I’m saying… is if you put a file in a certain place, a coupla things might happen later:
file?
it owns pretty much all of them on my disk
my log shows “troubled is short-addressing bot” only
just keep in mind that you’d have to manually remove your build-dependencies, regardless of how you installed them.
1, you might install a debian package that overwrites the file you put there
yeah, it could be disabled then; try with the full nick
pickcoder, file just says that it is a LaTeXe2 document.
and what is it really?
2, something else might interpret the existance of the file you put there in some unexpected way (rare but not unheard of)
pickcoder, it *is* a LaTeX file, I just don’t know the encoding.
if it’s a latex file, it should be ascii only.
file –mime ?
ran file(1) on it yet?
dondelelcaro, no, it should not.
latex doesn’t deal with UTF8 natively (or any other encodings)
wols_, yes. As I said earlier, file just says that it is a LaTeX 2e file. dondelelcaro, but it does.
no dice
no, it does not; you have to use external modules to deal with them.
test $1, but it saved the key to the db as just “cmd:”
dondelelcaro, exactly. So then it does.
yeah, that sounds like the command interpolation is off. in such a case, the exact modules loaded will tell you what the encoding is.
while I’m here, what do I have to edit to get a nameserver entry in resolv.conf to stay there?
http://thomasdamgaard.dk/p/P959.html - Do any of you recognize the encoding? dondelelcaro, nope.
ok, must be one of my _default options. i disabled a few I wasnt sure about like zfi or something since they had no documentation
hello everyone
I need newer mysql for example
great. now I have to rebuild apt-get in order to use apt-get.
wols_, file –mime says: text/plain; charset=utf-8, but it is *not* UTF-8.
_gAri-: so look at backports for it
gotta love this debian “packaging system”
i have a problem with the fontconfig i think. I am trying to install msttcorefonts or ttf-* fonts, but the caching always failed, and the result is i have not tff fonts installed
why do you need a 2.4 kernel?
zfi and zsi possibly?
I am much more comfortable making a personalized kernel, than compiling a new mysql
wols_, as you can see if you download and untar the file I linked to. It is some wierd encoding. Maybe file just guesses that it is UTF-8.
_gAri-: you don’t need to compile if it’s available as an etch backport for sarge
mostly because rsbac patch is much stabler on 2.4 than 2.6, and since 2.4 isnt developped any more, its much more secure
that sure looks like whatever it was has been double encoded.
_gAri-: you are better off with a 2.4 kernel on Sarge
is there some debian maintained backports repository, or only by third parties?
dondelelcaro, how do I solve that?
!backports
rumour has it, backports is a package from a newer Debian branch, compiled from source for an older branch to avoid dependency and ABI complications. http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/ch-package.en.html#s-port or http://backports.org/ or http://www.apt-get.org/ or ask me about simple sid backport
dondelelcaro, the file for download and in the hexdump is only a snippet of the file. The entire file is much bigger.
run it through iconv until it makes some sense
thank you
something like iconv -t iso8859-1 -f utf-8; or similar
cool, that’s the legacy ide/ all done for at last.
dondelelcaro, I have been running iconv on the file like crazy. I have been running it several times, and with different kinds of “from” encodings. dondelelcaro, I would like to transform it INTO UTF-8. Because I use UTF-8 for everything. It’s just that this file is not UTF-8. I would like it to be.
why is it even though i set the computer to sleep after being inactive for 3 minutes, it hibernates instead?
echo ‘København’|iconv -t utf8|hexdump -C; is what you can do to figure it out. (assuming whoever it is knows how to spell København correctly)
dondelelcaro, smart. Thanks!
too bad
00000000 4b c3 b8 62 65 6e 68 61 76 6e 0a |K..benhavn.|
right, which isn’t correct; the point is that you can play with it.
that’s cool, wasn’t aware of hexdump. I was using od -x to do that
dondelelcaro, but I’m still not quite sure how to use this to get any closer to get a readable file? dondelelcaro, why is that not correcT?
4b ef bf bd– needs to match this.
Hi Why do I *need* exim4 to be installed to install mutt?
yeah heh I looked at upgrading xorg-server to sids version
(and whoever wrote that resume should have been using K\/obenhavn anyway
dondelelcaro, oh. Yes. Of course. But I already knew that my current encoding is not the same as in the file.
seems to want to upgrade the entire system heh
dondelelcaro, OH! I think I know what you mean.
you need any mta because debian
oh snap
sends mail
gnome 2.20 out
how else do you plan on getting mail off of your machine?
I have qmail installed
you don’t *need* exim4, but you do need some MTA.
how do i kil all program with ipsec in it?
!qmail
qmail is, like, a Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) written by D.J. Bernstein. Because it is illegal to distribute binaries built from modified sources, Debian considers it non-free. For documentation about qmail, see http://www.qmail.org/ and http://www.lifewithqmail.org/lwq.html. There were no qmail releases since 1998, and a truckload of features and security measures needed for a MTA in use on today’s Internet must be patched in by external patches, invalida
!qmail-src
Yeah I have qmail installed already, from source
dondelelcaro, so I just need to go through all encodings until I get a “København” that matches the one in the file?
yeah and hope that whoever wrote it hasn’t come up with some invalid encoding
has gnome 2.20 hit sid yet?
so use the qmail-src package to build a qmail binary or use equivs to provide mail-transport-agent.
Do you, for any reason, prefer exim4 above qmail for a semi-professional mail server?
ask the kde maint
dondelelcaro, ok. Thanks.
can you obtain .deb files for smaller version increments somewhere? other than just etch/sid/etc
/msg dpkg info gnome-session
how do i kil all program with ipsec in it?
thanks
the first reason is that it’s not djb-ware; it’s far more configurable too. (That said, most people here would probably recommend postfix first)
Hello everybody, I’m under sid and when I try to update apt want to remove nvidia-glx, is it normal ?
looks like its still 2.18… when they gonna put 2.20 in?
exim is the default in Debian because at the time defaults were being decided, it was the one that had the best debconf configuration
wir
when the maintainers get around to it
/msg dpkg sid faq
wir? ok
hello

wir is, like, When It’s Ready. See also RSN and SIYH
if you’re interested in gnome, you can join the gnome team and help out
hm, that would be interesting
sure i’d like to but i dont exactly have any developing experience
you don’t need it, actually. there are lots of things that can be done without being a developer
yeah? tell me more
Where do I get a list of all the encodings?
iconv -l like replicating existing bugs, helping to provide smaller testcases where possible, working on documentation, helping to free up developer time for packaging new versions of gnome, testing development versions of the 2.20 packages, etc.
oh well bedtime I think have to sort it out another day thanks anyway
Postfix did not really work for me
that would be cool i guess
I’ve had problems with it, I used it in combination with courier I’m prepared to use any mail daemon that understands authentication, and I’d like IPv6 too - next to that, I’d just choose the one with most features, which was the last time I checked, qmail
dondelelcaro, thanks.
You recommend exim, I understand?
ugh. unless you need features of courier, you’ll have much better luck with dovecot it depends on the user, really. (and at this stage of the game, sendmail, postfix, and exim have way more features than qmail does)
dovecot? /me checks okay
How do I make the nice launch-from-windows installer to actually reinstall grub?
np
Using the recovery options doesn’t work _
dovecot is IMAP only?
no.
no
Oh that’s what it says in the website header
doh, can’t beat dondelelcaro to the punch.
but I see POP3 mentioned too
what are the options for secure/encrypted imap?
it does both, but imap is (for obvious reasons) prefered
the sid FAQ makes sid seem a lot more shaky than it is
These reasons are not obvious to me, it seems
i mean i’ve only been using it for a few months now
geo-rge: dovecot, cyrus, courier et al.
but after every dist-upgrade i’ve done so far, only minor things have broken i haven’t seen anything catastrophic
you mean than it is now? than it was yesterday? well that’s a good thing. the goal is to release something stable, so the
the point is that catastrophic things can happen
dist-upgrade only ever fixes stuff for me, not breaks
heh i know
devs work toward that.
that’s cool i guess
they’re not the rule, but if that’s a serious problem you need to be aware of it
but the thing is the sid is allowed to break horribly
What SMTP server do you recommend?
perhaps it shows linux is making a step closer to completion, or buglessness
dovecot or exim.
Eh
s/dovecot/postfix/
Dovecot does SMTP too?
the fact it doesn’t too often is “whew! got past that one!”
Oh right
geo-rge: yeah hahaha i feel the same way every time i upgrade geo-rge: last night i had to upgrade like 96 packages and i was almost sure something was going to break
It seems like exim is an all-in package, containing SMTP, IMAP and POP… does it have any negative sides, too?
yes, I do too, and I stick to stable more often than not what annoys me the most after an upgrade is trying to figure out what among thousands of packages is goign to change and I have to deal with it in some way
it doesn’t do imap nor pop (which is good, because being a good MTA and being a good IMAP/POP server tend to be separate things)
So exim + Dovecot is a good combination?
yes (as is postfix+exim) s/exim/dovecot/
I’m doing qmail (built from the debian patched source into a debian package) and cyrus imap
whoever wrote apt-build should be shot against the wall
i just did a fresh install of debian lenny, then upgraded to Sid. i am trying to run the NVIDIA driver installer form nVidia’s website, but i am getting an error: modpost: GPL-incompatible module nvidia.ko uses GPL-only symbol ‘paravirt_ops’
hi
it was originally an april fools joke that scrolled logs from buildd.debian.org at varying speeds
this thing has frustrated me to no end — and the author has seemingly abandoned it
heh
apt-get source apt-build — how fucking ironic is that?
good luck getting qmail off your system
thank you
does anyone have some suggestions for a iTunes alternative?
I think I’ll check life-with-qmail since that was my guide for installing it

does the free nVidia driver support 3D acceleration?

if I had an is-sue… I’d issue in the morning…

I’ve heard good things about Rhythmbox for that, but i’m not entirely certain as i’ve never done it.
vlc has access to only one of my two dvd devices, however, I can mount both through gnomemount wait no, I am just stupid
How do I make the nice launch-from-windows installer to actually reinstall grub?
I was confusing hdc and hdd
Using the recovery options doesn’t work _
wtf?? wtf?! omfg apt-build is closed source
according to the guys in #nvidia, the free driver does support 3D accel. am i missing something?
so it’s in non-free? who wrote it?
maybe in experimental branch, but as far as I know, nv has 2D only support
some dickwad named `aptitude show apt-build|grep Maintain`
the free project for nvidia cards is called nouveau, you should browse their site
the freakin’ source file only contains the apt-build binary, and the source is only for aptbuild-wrapper
ah, will do, thanks
apt-build is not closed source. and the “Maintainer” field is just that…the maintainer of the package, not the author of the software
he’s the guy who wrote it brb, I’m gonna cut myself to bleed out the anger
If I installed sun java. would it automatically the java that is already on there, presumeably a free version, if not, what is the name of the package of the free one for me to remove?

that’s an awfully strange name for a maintainer…
just grab the source package and see for yourself
update-java-alternatives
maddash my god, man, it’s written in perl. it’s not a binary. cat apt-build in the source
can someone say me, how i can put the mail from postfix into cyrus? what have i write to mailbox_command and mailbox_transport?

and hark, awesome, thanks.
what do I read on writing a startup script for program under debian ?
!apt-build
from memory, apt-build is an apt-get front-end for compiling software optimised for your machine, see http://freshmeat.net/projects/apt-build/?topic_id=147%2C865, or http://julien.danjou.info/article-apt-build.html

then cat /etc/init.d/skeleton and that too
update-rc.d
so what does that link have to do with the non-free stuff you just threw about now? !red hat tools
If you’re a (former) Red Hat tool looking for Red Hat Tools on debian, you won’t find many. But: chkconfig={sysvconfig,sysv-rc-conf,rcconf,update-rc.d}; service=invoke-rc.d; kudzu=discover; rc.local=bootmisc; etc. in more recent debian versions /etc/init.d/rc.local exists, see the script for more info
hark thanks that’s what i need
re
that bug pretty much erradicates the usefulness from apt-build. and it’s never been fixed, so I apt-getted the source. and ls only showed that apt-build was executable, which I assumed was a binary. but thanks to markybob, it’s actually perl, so now I can fix up apt-build for the rest of you.
where are the C header files for debian?
in packages
/usr/include/ mostly Or still back at the repository
ok i need to get sonypi on my system for this laptop and use of the fn key and acpi fan options
which c headers btw?
kernel running kernel headers
btw to get the -basic- stuff… try this: apt-get install build-essential
apt-get and aptitude still suck when it comes to build-dep, but now that I fixed apt-build, I can use it with aptitude, and my debian system can finally automatically purge build-deps

the headers of the running kernel probably aren’t what you want (exceptions of course)… usually if you’re building stuff you want the headers that libc was built agains t
anyone want the patch?
bugs.debian.org does

you report it and include a patch that fixes the bug. those are the best bugs

daniel robbins seems like a smart chap to me

anyone know if it’s possible to get flash in links?
maddash, not at all
where are you pulling this from? ever heard of the gentoo motto?
it was great for my xbox
where would one get these latest binaries?
no time to gentoo
thousands of people recompiling every week is a huge waste of energy
guys how can i install sonypi modules on my computer there not loaded i dont think i cant find them
there is that
petemc, ftp.debian.org
so ‘make’, don’t ‘make clean’
thats still compiling

can i apt-get vmware

VMware isn’t part of Debian, therefore it’s not supported. Ask the vendor for support, or ask here: #vmware
have you tried?
yes can i non-free it
does this has to do with udev ?
did you readk what dpkg just said?
and what is the command to list drives?
mount you mean ?
yea sure
there isn’t one, unix/linux doesn’t work that way well you can look at dmesg but drives isn’t the only thing it mentions
when i type mouni get this /dev/hda3 on / type ext3 (rw,errors=remount-ro)
when I get mount and paste it inhere I get kicked
that will only list those drives that are actually mounted so… don’t paste it inhere!

I wonder how long it would take to infect a Debian machine going out onto the net and randomly downloading things and visiting nasty sites.
you love the attention that you get
Is apt-get remove supposed to leave various configuration files of the “removed” package lying around behind it? I for one am not an experienced debianner
yes, use purge instead of remove if you want to get rid of conf files also
or really
apt-get remove –purge should solve that

so the first thing you say after 10 mins is a tirade about something you didn’t read enough

dkr, with two m’s, i can’t spell, hence the misspelling on purpose
okay, I’ll try purgin’ then. (I did an “apt-get install apache” and then read a bit more on the subject and decided to do apache2; now neither of them works :-/)
mispelling?
so you’re being stupid on purpose?

oh dear.
Anybody here run Zimbra on Deb?
better being stupid on purpose then being stupid for real I guess
geo-rge, to answer you’re question about /dev/hda3, its your primary harddrive’s thrid partition, its carrying all of your system’s information… basically
I’m a programer^Wprogramma^W^W^WI write code
geo-rge, hda1 - bootstrap stuff, hda2 is a swap, and hda3 is your system dkr, i have that t-shirt
it seems that you bagan this thing based on something I asked which you took out of context
oh
apparantly again, on purpose
well not really
why don’t you end this by looking at what happened before that question was asked
“A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.”
i joined in when you asked “what is /dev/hda?” or “what is /dev/hda3?”
I saw you join
and i just gave you the answer
just freakin’ great. another bug: “aptitude: unrecognized option `–print-uris’” — how do I search through the message content of bug reports?
hmm, still nothing, this is getting annoying. Why would “/etc/init.d/apache2 start” just be silently doing nothing (exit code 0), for that matter?
hda - primary hard drive, hda1 - bootstrapping stuff, hda2 - swap, hda3 - primary data partition
no, you gave an out of context answer which was inappropriate for the situation
fine
maybe that’s your setup
why are you trying to mount hda3 anyways, it mounts by itself
hi
whats the apt package to install X nowadays?
if i read correctly that’s what you were trying to do right ?

if you looked back before that question was asked, wouldn’t you already know the answer to that?
Could a proxy work for some ip’s? coming from a particular country?
;p
idk i quit i’m done being as ass *an

nono, ok, so I have to read to you… ok, someone was having a problem because HIS /dev/hda3 was mounted ro
xserver-org or something i thought
geo-rge, that would complicate things a lot geo-rge, he should check his ftab or fstab, whatever it is
yes, and we don’t know yet why it’s that way we’re assuming it’s some kind of glitch… if it were always that way, he couldn t have installed
this is true oh, bummer
or installed packages
he can’t edit the fstab file though… if the partition is mounted wrong
flyinprogramer, he can read it tho to check if its correct or not
or if it went to ro for some other reason (which is what I suspect, it is claiming the partition is -marked- read only somehow
that’s true geo-rge, if it is wrong, he can always use like a gentoo boot disk to chroot into his harddrive and edit the files
(but this should all be in your scrollback… but I digress)
oh well sorry for butting my head into your problem i was an ass, i admit it
that’s probably what he’s going to have to do
gentoo? wht? WTF
beardy…what’s the problem with the gentoo disk ?? its a create command line boot iso ? *great
well as is a grub floppy but that doesn’t function as a rescue disk
any live d would do i guess cd*
the debian install cd works
i have just installed lenny-amd64. is there a way to pass arguments to apt-get to install 32 bit packages? more specifically, i am hoping to get skype from apt
skype is in no repo
it is in a repo that skype setup
it would be really nice if the debian install cd could do rescues again (like it was in boot-floppies)
petemc how do you get a debian disk to boot into command line ??
but when i try to download it rihgt now, it says that my arch is not supported
geo-rge: it can
the shell is on vc2
you cant install 386 packages into that amd64 system, though theres 32-bit amd64 packages. Confusing libc6-i386 is an example
!Nodm
Debian does not use a specific runlevel for graphical display managers by default. Just remove the dm package(s) with “apt-get remove xdm kdm wdm login.app gdm pdm”. “update-rc.d -f xdm remove” and friends will also disable the dm until a package update is installed and the runlevel symlinks are restored.. NEWSFLASH! echo “false” /etc/X11/default-display-manager, or a temporary solution is to hit ctl-alt-fN to get to a console
i see, dont use that repo if its debian/386 use that statically compiled tar.gz
i have found work around (download the “satic” release and run it with: linux32 ./skype) but i was wondering if there were any other ways
you dont need to use linux32
why does my hard drive make a high pitched screetching noise ?

then i am confused…
you are just imagining that linux32 does anything that matters to skype
no. from what i understand, linux32 allows 32bit packages to play “nicer” in the 64bit world. i.e. you can run 32bit apps
whoa, pdm
that’s nonsense run ‘linux32 arch’ and compare the output to just ‘arch’, thats all linux32 does it patches some string
guys, I hate to sound needy, but much googling and log-grepping has turned up nothing at all here
why does apache hate me so?

that’s still useful, but not for skype

No, I mean I know that Acer/lenovo keeps some data on one partition ans I am not sure if there are also windows installation files present. I really know that partition can not keep data after installing there other soft
you just need to keep the hpa ( host protected area )
If you mean that part at the beginning of disc, yrs s/yrs/yes/
no idea where its located, linux might respect that by default, see dmesg
from a 64bit lenny install, can i install 686 kernels from apt? i cant seem to find the packages
MBR wouldnt touch by the partition-procedure
I know how to keep it, but that what I am not sure is if it contains also win installation.
it contains everything needed to restore the state your notebook shipped in
hi guys
thats past anyway…
So the other partitions are empty before the installation?
windows should be on ONE partition heh fdisk -l
i need help about NTFS config
that’s quite irrelevant
first 6GB partition m id 27, the rest on separate
XftColorAllocName
i can´t see windows files
fine
all you need is the hpa to restore original state, i can hardly know how ibm disks look before they install
so you are absolutely sure, that the separate partition contains all
have you mounted your windows partition?
i can see windows files and not can change files
