Because you linked them to some other filesystem that hasn’t been mounted when you boot.
I don’t think I have anything else to play it with
why is it that when i have -multilib in my use flags, building gcc and sandbox still tries to do the 32 bit parts.. i think run into the problem that i don’t have IA32 support in the kernel and the compile breaks
How can I use sed to manually trim the \n off of the very end of /var/lib/portage/world?
i meant, have you played anything else with audacious
Is it ok to delete all empty lines or just the very last one?
hi Ghotcom__
– edited worldfile by hand…there’s probly an emerge switch to add stuff to the worldfile w/o emerging, but I forget what it is.
lumato, yeah it plays mp3’s just fine
CareBear\: I honestly don’t know.
emerge inject
try running file on the saved stream
CareBear\: Thanks
lumato, unlikely, but putting /etc, /bin, /lib or /sbin on a different filesystem from / is a bad idea.
Meanwhile, I still have a \n at the end of my worldfile.
Sorry, but that’s just FUD
shoutcast-playlist(3).pls: PLS playlist
apparently on sparc the root fs has to be first on the disk and 2GiB
CareBear\, provide justification.
you’ll have to tweak the init scripts a bit then.
are you trying to stream it live or download the stream and play it?
I could ask you to do the same.
CareBear\, maybe an USE=”unicode” emerge -DN world ?
fstab is in /etc
CareBear\, files in these directories are required for mounting non-root filesystems on a typical setup.
well I clicked the link to download it, downloaded it, and now I’m trying to play it in audacious
‘download it’. What is ‘it’?
I have other streams that I had played before in audacious, and they don’t play now either
no..
the .pls file
CareBear\, f.ex: fstab, mount, and supporting libraries.
Link?
Not even init is needed with an initramfs.
have you tried giving audacious the http address to the .pls file directly?
http://www.shoutcast.com/sbin/shoutcast-playlist.pls?rn=1428&file=filename.pls
how do i locate a driver for my wireless card, its a belkin N wireless notebook card?
lumato, trying that now
The product name is useless I’m afraid.
CareBear\, what else u need?
lumato, that doesn’t seem to work
The only way to be really certain of what hardware is inside your wireless card is by looking up the FCC ID at the FCC web page, and reading the chip model from the photos there.
CareBear\, sure, but many setups do not use initramfs.
(or at least make)
CareBear\, and most users don’t know how to construct one.
(like me) does it provide an error message?
no error message
CareBear\: Or just use lspci?
just nothing happens when I try to add the internet address, or play the playlist file after it’s loaded
Now we’re getting somewhere. I think it’s important to not hide the possibilities of Gentoo and Linux. I dislike when people say that something is a bad idea just because it requires more knowledge.
try using less or a text editor to extract the URL from the .pls file, and give audacious that
lumato, it won’t add the address
CareBear\, do u know what part of the FCC website i’d do such a search?
Just use lspci.
Does emerge build from source or use binaries?
Monkeh_, it gives me little to no information about it it doesn’t know what it is
Is it preferable to use an initramfs?
robink, depends on what you want to do.
So pastebin the output
what’s the output of ‘cat /var/db/pkg/media-sound/audacious*/USE’?
Hell0 all
robink, if it complicates your setup, it’s a bad idea. If it simplifies your setup, it’s a good idea.
it builds from source (though it can also use and build binaries, but it’s generally used to build from source)
It would complicate my setup.
https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/ used to have a search form but I think they’ve moved it. Re lspci - no that will not always help.
how do I switch to gcc4 after changing from a hardened profile?

my bad
sorry I thought it would be shorter
Some guy at the FCC definately has some swedish roots.
rafb or pastebin
*sigh*
in future use pastebin for anything longer than a line
ok
sorry to ask dumb questions, i’m new to gentoo and installing it tonight, but do i want the current, or the release?
I’d go with the latest release
that’s… weird…
Using pastebins can be a pain if you’re in a VGA console IMO
emerge nopaste
try swapping out ‘cat’ for ‘grep curl’
CareBear\: I have it. Does the Gentoo LiveCD have it?
lumato, no results
CareBear\: Pastebins should have a TCP/IP socket that you can dump to with Bash.
It should. Maybe it doesn’t, but then a little bash trickery can get the job done using links.
is audacious supposed to use curl?
not sure
Yes, it uses curl.
CareBear\: You can use Links to do HTTP posts from the commandline? CareBear\: Eww. Why not use wget or curl?
Sure.
are this messages normal when running locale?? Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or directory Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory
CareBear\: Not my links
what package contains quse?
portage-utils
ah, thanks
https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/GenericSearch.cfm
is there any way to upgrade/replace openboot to fix the stupid 2GiB limit?
Probably not no. There are a few ofw alternatives but I don’t know if there is a flasher or even if there’s actually flash in your system.
Has someone used pandoc?
so, would it require modifying initscripts and such to make /usr and /home symlinks to another mount?
lumato, why not just mount your filesystems on /home and /usr?
hello, how to enable the autohint font?
i’d much rather use one filesystem
question guys. I’ve made one partition that is 460 gig I’ve partitioned that but when trying to mke2fs -j /dev/hda3 it fails and if I list /dev/hda* there is no hda3
nfs-utils has a dependency in the ebuild like this: || ( net-libs/libgssglue =app-crypt/libgssapi-0.11 ) i have libgssglue installed, yet it still bombs out saying configure: error: Package requirements (libgssapi = 0.11) were not met
any idea why
you wrote the partition table ?
F||, yes
sure ? you checked it with fdisk ?
yes and it shows
u rebooted ?
no i am now
probably whatever tool rewrote it forgot to tell the kernel; either that or udev didn’t notice or wasn’t running
mike3_, sometimes you need to reboot after partitioning for the kernel to catch the changes - I don’t know about fdisk, but cfdisk will tell you if the re-read succeeded or failed when you quit.
fdisk in my experience will too
my words
yes a reboot caught the changes how large can ext3 read a partion up to ?
o0 dunno srry but i think huge
iirc the limit is something like 2TiB
mike3_, terabytes.
got’cha that’s good
:p
wrong channel for windows flame
linux is our religion
in less than a year
anyone had experiences with zfs yet ?
I was thinking of trying zfs the other day with a new install
mike3_, depending on block size, your maximum filesystem size ranges from 2 TiB to 32 TiB.
but it didn’t seem prudent seeing as it’s rather new to me
i checked it months ago
Draconx|Laptop, I don’t understand block sizes.
no nothing about ti
but the port wasnt stable at all
any better than the other journalized fs’s?
mike3 .. the problem is … ext3 has inode tables
would it totally break the system if i moved and then symlinked /home and /usr from a live partition?
in the inode tables blocks are linked and on small blocks more entries for files are spend
Do it when booted off another system.
so you can save more or less
And don’t symlink, just mount.
to have my dhcp server get my ip and stuff everytime at boot i’d use config_eth=( “dhcp” ) right? instead of manually setting it
ti terabytes, and blocksizes are not really absolutely required unless you’re interested in knowing how large your hd really is.
CareBear\: i should really quote you right now
FUD? home is no problem.
CareBear\: i have a tendency to mv (large) things to and from /tmp
Ok?
it should be the next gen fs
and occasionally /usr
how do I rsync to a server where ssh is on port 2210 rather then 22
so they really shouldn’t be mounts unless they’re binds or somesuch and i’ve no idea how that’d work
*should* or *will*?
sirukin, on sun systems zfs pwns
ZFS should be the next gen FS? Not Ext4 or Reiser4?
i think so
.ssh/config
8-/
seems to run just fine on the solaris pc I have running so it must not be bad.
Where do you want your usr and home to be then?
It’ll take for/ever/ to get it into the kernel tree.
try adding -e ’ssh -P2210′ to rsync’s options
CareBear\: re where should I report this bug with autotrace ebuild already ?
as reiser4 does
bugs.gentoo.org
ok
-e “ssh -p 2210″ cool
CareBear\: same partition? not sure what you’re asking
Or just .ssh/config Why do you want to move them then? I can’t understand what your goal is.
but must it be in the kernel tree with fuse ? i dont think so
CareBear\: i need them off the root partition, but on the same, _other_ partition
Isn’t ZFS on FUSE rather slow? Plus you need an initrd to get it going.
every program is slow on userspace instead of kernel space
how do i get a net install iso that has what’s listed on debian.org as the latest kernel image?
So what is a root filesystem driver doing in userspace?
Ok, on the same partition. Yeah, then use -o bind on at least one of them.
and has anyone ever installed gentoo and a Dell d620 laptop?
robink, for testing purpose ? the driver isnt nearly stable …
CareBear\: this can be done in fstab? and manually something like mount -o bind /mnt/otherpart/home /home ?
robink, but i think when you look on sun demonstrations it will be pushed in the kernel tree
Sure.
excellent!
Why are yuo asking about a debian kernel in a Gentoo channel?
thanks
robink, you viewed the sun demonstrations ?
Nope.
robink, i would view it its a great fs … self regulating you can put any device in raid … you can add new devices as harddisks on runtime robink, perfect solution for software raid technollogy instant recovery of broken files -l
i’m sorry my bad
So wait, it does DM stuff too? I thought it was just a FS.
has anyone installed gentoo in here on a dell d620
robink, it does robink, you can link any harddisk devices you can for example link 100 usb sticks as one physical device …
It needs a name, like storagethingy or something…I mean if it has a DM layer that it communicates with… Can’t you do that with the Linux DM?
robink, view http://opensolaris.org/os/community/zfs/demos/basics/
The secure linux web hosting RAID5 driver now lets you automatically grow the RAID volume
zfs does too
Ah. So will the ZFS DM replace the Linux DM as a general-purpose DM? I’m in a VGA console and plan to stay that way for a while at least.
robink, no zfs … is a sun development
So?
robink, zfs is ported as linux fs but isnt stable
IBM has contributed stuff that’s pretty near the core of the Linux kernel
dsl komplettpaket jaja
i kinda read an article in linux mag about zfs
I know it isn’t stable and isn’t part of the kernel proper yet. I’m talking about the future as I thought you were. DSL something packet?
robink, i think it will make it in the kernel tree when the driver is stable and its cute
cute?
spamstuff “complete DSL package” in english
robink, yes very revolutionary in my eyes
if this VGA console thing limits you to one app at a time, you really should look into screen
CareBear\: Ah Uhm, flash …and I’m using screen as we speak
flash?
Cute == Revolutionary? Crazy
and you can’t browse the web at console?
Page that F|| linked me to is mostly Flash
oh right ouch
I s’pose I could pull gnash out of CVS and see how the framebuffer support is coming along. …but I’m not in a framebuffer either :-/
robink, but view it by time its impressive the self healing is very nice
I decompiled a bunch of stuff in my kernel that I need back. Unfortunately in my smart way of trying to fix it overwrite all the backups. I tried re-emerging all the kernel sources but it somehow still remembers what my old options were. Is there anyway to start fresh (like when you first install Gentoo start with the kernel you get then) and then add on what I need?
and many of these flash things pull buttloads of stuff off the site they’re running on
Either that or figure out what I decompiled that made my wireless driver (rt2570) not work.
I don’t follow
the flash app expects to run in a browser and be able to download stuff on-the-fly tends to be a tiny loader with some sites anyway
hey guys. I have a m2v video file and a mpg audio file I used these files for a dvd project so I know they’re fine however when I import them into my project together, the audio is like 2 seconds off (or so)
… gnash … Don’t get me wrong, I love the effort and all, but pulling in Boost for a Flash player? No way José
so i just had a power outage….and when i turned my computer back on (it had been up for about 10 days) it booted into some failsafe X session… anybody know what might be broken?
boost is a cool lib to have anyways…
if I play the clip from the beginning it works ok but anywhere that’s not the beginning it is off omg. sorry guys! wrong channel!!
know the feeling
lol
haha these guys are the to stoned to have a look on the channel name -the +o
perhaps, but large…
$*!!!!!! Need time travel device plus s/\/\\/
hey. how do I support large files (like I think 4+ gig) in linux?
Adekoba, I have nothing that needs it …
I have a dvd image that I try to copy from my macbook that sees as 169 megs instead of several gigs
bobber205, with the right fs you dont have to care about this
regardless, it might be in the next revision of c++
that.
what filesystem are you using, and how are you copying from your macbook?
I am using ext3 I am using ftp
haha, finally back up and runing after the expat upgrade, had to rebuild half the packages on my system
Well, worldfile is partially rebuilt
yeah i had a similar experience a couple weeks ago
assumedly you’re not using some sort of ancient libc, so… i’d suspect the ftp client or server
now i’m just a bit confused though….for some reason my X is jacked
does anyone know hdparm very well?
what do you need to do with it?
man does
CareBear\: just a last thing before I submit this bug, could it be caused by a missing USE flag in ImageMagick ?
What little app rebuilds the worldfile from emerge logs? I need to back up /var and /etc *often*…ugh I don’t do it at all now
CareBear\: as I dont them all enabled have*
No.
well i want to set up my hard disk for performance
autotrace isn’t built properly against your installed imagemagick. time to log off
phew
CareBear\: ok
fwiw, i recommend a different file transfer method (see http://wooledge.org/mywiki/FtpMustDie)
CareBear\: see ya, thanks
What backup app preserves ACLs?
my macbook says I can connect to my computer from windows at \\macbook\myusername
…and other extended attributes?
when I type that into konqeueror it says smb not supported
I’ve asked before, I keep forgetting, I’ll write it down this time.
bobber205, did you support smb in the kernel ?
iirc dar may support xattrs
sweet, fixed my X problem. turns out i must have carelessly let etc-update overwrite /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
yes as modules
What a moron. (Is it your page?)
CareBear\: nope
bobber205, you loaded the modules ?
CareBear\: but there’re some very valid points
I agree with the point but the arguments suck.
just did and tried again. no workie
hi, I’m trying to install the kde overlay for the kde4 stuff, but when I try to install any of the kde4 packages, they’re masked by lack of keyword
scp _only_ exists for backwards-compatibility with rcp, which is probably about as old as FTP. And HTTP uses base64 encoding so is automatically about 2/3 as efficient as binary transfers.
what am I doing wrong here?
CareBear\: but scp is exceedingly simple to use; and HTTP can send binary just fine
if i use config_eth0=( “dhcp” ) in /etc/conf.d/net will that automatically get my static ip hosting and domain information everytime i boot instead of doing it manually?
This Greg guy needs to do more research.
CareBear\: HTTP _can_ use base64, but there’s really no point
hi folks … need some help … have 2 gentoo machines that i want to connect via a crossover network cable both machines have 2 interfaces
dhcp is used by default if you have a blank conf.d/net… you do have to install a dhcp client though
CareBear\: What’s the best means to move files from machine to machine, then?
anyone can help?
CareBear\: A networked filesystem?
both of the machines currently have an internet connection, but one has a local IP via DHCP from the router and one has a static IP on a different class all together
I think base64 is mandatory and anything else is optional but I am not 100% sure about it. Haven’t read HTTP in a while.
so i can use a blank file and just install dhcpcd and i dont have to configure anything?
CareBear\: i’ve never downloaded a file using base64 content-encoding that i know of
i’m wanting to network these two machines with their other NIC’s and a crossover cable how difficult is this?
add net.eth0 to your default runlevel, thats about it
any email attachment is base64 encoded
ok thanks
nearly any
true; HTTP can handle binary though
FTP isn’t all that hopeless as long as you’re on top of the firewall issues. The simplicity is a nice bonus. In dire straits, you can do FTP with only netcat
why not just use netcat?
No built-in metainformation. sftp is better than scp if one is looking at ssh things.
you’d need to set that manually from the control channel anyway
I would need execute privileges on the system to use only nc, not so with FTP
Hello
(the remote system)
yea! got an LDAP address book rockin on squirrelmail
CareBear\: good point; although if it really is remote you’d better hope nobody along the route is dumping traffic
It’s possible that partitions created on a Pentium II could not boot on an Athlon XP system? When trying to boot the partitions, it says “Non-system disk” “Press any key to reboot”
One can argue that a secure transport belongs below the application layer.
if they’re both IA-32, there should be no issue
I think you have a bad setting in your BIOS setup.
CareBear\: one could; although there’s a good bit of flexibility at such a high level\
Or possibly you’re missing the active flag on your boot partition.
CareBear\: A friend said he experienced a problem like that, he’s UNIX BOFH
Is that really needed if a lower layer provides security. I am BOFH hoho
CareBear\: No, I missed it and actived again. Same problem
Better watch out so I don’t read your mail really fast. Look through the BIOS settings for the disk controller. This would be a PATA disk and maybe the PATA stuff isn’t active in the newer mobo.
CareBear\: lower layer security tends to require user-inaccessible auth/crypto systems; you have to trust the PKI or what-have-you
True.
although IMO we really should address nodes by key fingerprints
The world will migrate to v6 once a few v6-only porn sites show up.
heh
(they need to be good though) Oh well.
CareBear\: This is a long history. I bought a SATA HDD (500GB) and a a friend gave me a PCI SATA controller because my computer is old (Athlon XP 1100MHZ). I can’t boot a CD when the SATA PCI controller is plugged, so I had the “smart” idea (not so smart after the problems) of installing it on an older computer (Pentium II) that loads the CD with the SATA PCI controller pluged. Everything is installed properly and works on Pentium II.
i really don’t like keeping track of that many bits
CareBear\: whatcha doing with crypto?
but yeah, v6 is needed…
Ok.
oh, you guys talking about spam?
CareBear\: Now tried to boot from the Athlon XP, but failed too. Then thinked to write grub on an IDE HDD for booting, and after many tries failed too…
CareBear\: A nightmare geek story
it seems you can’t boot over PATA with SATA in-system; maybe get an adapter as a last resort?
Or a better PCI SATA controller…
Is there a ROM on the SATA card? Otherwise you can never boot from it.
Why my old system can?
CareBear\: Yes
CareBear\: It boots on Pentium II, it freezes on my Athlon XP
And you’ve enabled “boot from other devices” in your BIOS? or whatever it is called
CareBear\: Not found that option
It may just be that the BIOS on the XP mobo is crap.
(and IMO, a nightmare is more like moving /lib/libc.so and seeing what happens, only to notice mv won’t work to move it back…)
Go through your BIOS settings. Check out asmutils
(on a running server, even)
CareBear\: It’s weird, as the friend who selled me the board two years ago said me that he used this SATA PCI controller (Silicon image 3112A) in the past with my computer
you guys see that article about the Indian researchers who used a number sieve to determine a 307 bit prime number in 100 hrs?
Then it’s a setting no doubt.
CareBear\: static busybox was actually what i fixed it with; thank the Light smbd was running with a writable share…
CareBear\: Maybe the mobo is starting to fail?
I doubt it. \o/
kinda makes me wonder how long public key crypto will last also makes me wonder why i don’t have a HRNG
Sounds good. A friend of mine also did(does?) some research on large prime factoring. Haven’t seen her in a few years though.
CareBear\: What about using the default settings of the bios and see what occours?
100 hours? is that a bit long or did i completely misinterpret how RSA works?
heh 100 hrs to determine whether a 307 digit number is prime how many digits (decimal) does a 1024 bit RSA key take?
1024bit thats about 30x in decimal i think
you said 307 bits…
must be more ah 307 bit, sorry
Sure, that’s a good start. Play around with lots of BIOS settings.
yah, so.. 1024 isn’t too far
openssl genrsa 1024 | openssl rsa -text
CareBear\: I hate bios, too much problems
but thats just wheter its prime but you need prime factors for breaking RSA
wepy, there are other public key systems besides RSA. RSA requires enormous keys to be secure and isn’t very fast.
I hate BIOS too.
CareBear\: Thanks a lot for your help
how does DSA compare? (i dunno crap about it)
lumato, DSA is something else.
most people don’t have HRNGs, so the “pseudo prime numbers” the RSA algo uses, sometimes aren’t really prime! that means! if they can determine that yours wasn’t prime, there’s more than one key out there that can decrypt your cipher!
i think i see… hmm
checking if a given number is prime ?
i bet you could
i don’t get why GPG permits making a DSA or RSA key then
Err - surely entropy quality does not have anything to with determining if a given number is a prime?
which makes me happy i’ve been using 4096 bit keys for years haha suckas!
proving a number prime of the size RSA needs is a *very* tedious operation.
CareBear\: entropy doesn’t help CareBear\: it’s the algorithm creating the primes (which sure, uses entropy).. it’s not meant to create real primes (it can’t tell)
CareBear\: Another solution could be using bootp and loading grub, but I need another local computer for that and not having CD-R burner (broken). I have a 3com NIC
you did say HRNG?
wepy, do you have some more information on how number sieves work ?
CareBear\: The 3com nic has a nice firmware with lots of interesting shit for booting by network
so basically, algorithms that create prime numbers might want to start testing those prime numbers with the same algo the Indian researchers developed to ensure that they are actually prime sorry, not a math guy.. i googled it
well im studying computer sciene and i have some maths but not that much
PXE probably. Try sending it a zpxe etherboot from rom-o-matic.net
number sieves where make by some crypto guy a long time ago
but prime factors etc is some real interresting stuff
Erathostenes is a classic and simple prime sieve
yes..
lumato, DSA is an algorithm for signing messages - probably the primary use of gpg. RSA can also be used for this, but when encrypting messages rather than just signing, one wouldn’t use DSA.
i wish i understood the math of encryption better.. i’d start cracking keys
ah, that’d explain the dual-use capability… DSA doesn’t depend on primes?
CareBear\: But it’s possible to configure the PXE thingie for accessing to internet?
CareBear\, for Erathostenes you’d need LOTS of space for that big numbers
or, i’ve no idea what i’m talking about here, so
DSA needs primes
when u minimize a window in gnome where tf does it go
all public key encryption algorithms use prime numbers recycle bin?
I didn’t think RSA was used much at all for encryption - rather some symmetric cipher did the grunt work and then the key is RSAd.
minimize ?
ack! i have to be gone like an hour ago!
CareBear\, RSA is commonly used during key exchange.
thanks all
hey anyone having problems with alsa and games
CareBear\, encrypting the messages sent during this time. It’s *way* too slow to use for the bulk of the traffic.
Along with DH yes?
demoncorsair, no, what problems ?
CareBear\: RSA and such are used in the initial auth and encryption for protocols like SSH
But kex is rather limited amounts of data.
CareBear\: I mean configuring the firmware for specify certain IP and gateway so can access to my router
pcm_plug.c:67: snd_pcm_plug_close: Assertion `plug-gen.slave == plug-req_slave’ failed. that problem
Yes, that’s right.
when I started a emerge -uD world, it said that an older version of aspell was blocking the new version — so I manually uninstalled the old version. It’s still complaining. The wierd thing is it’s telling me ‘=app-dicts/aspell-en-0.5*’ is blocking it. I checked package.keywords for that – anywhere else I can check?
CareBear\: after that, a symetric key is used.. i think ssh has perfect forward security though, so the way the symetric key is done, is still safe
CareBear\, Diffie-Hellman is just a different way of forming shared secrets.
anyone having that problem?
CareBear\: so even if your ssh key got cracked, i think you might be OK, just not for proving your identity
pf secrecy
though, i’m not 100% sure about how it works..
demoncorsair, dont think i have seen that
sshd typically generates new session keys every hour or so. OpenSSH has had support for re-kexing at least a few years.
it has a historic background, in the early beginning Phil Zimmerman developed PGP which was using RSA as encryption. RSA is under licence and probably not legal in some countries, so Phil decided to use DSA (DSS). To stay compatible to older versions and ciphers, gpg still allows RSA-Keys.
demoncorsair, i was just having problems with sound after watching a movie, alsa needs to be reloaded in the kernel
ups he’s gone
k
yeh
How come it’s refered to as a key exchange method?
that issue specifically mattmatteh ?
so what do you guys recommend for video editing? specifically xvid and h264 video
CareBear\, coming up with a shared secret is the entire purpose of key exchange.
you can still sniff the keystrokes and see interactive traffic by using a key-timing analysis program
demoncorsair, thats what you are having too ?
Convert to DV and use kino
demoncorsair, i havent investigated it yet. i only noticed the other day
There are patches to mitigate that threat.
I would prefer to not to do DV as I Don’t have 1 terabyte of free space I have long videos
CareBear\: i heard.. however I haven’t seen them in openSSH (i can’t understand the code though) CareBear\: just sniff your traffic to see…
Problem with brl-cad ebuild situation and standard Gentoo file placement policy…
CareBear\: though, I wonder if the time delay delta is so small, i couldn’t tell from a visual analysis
starseeker, huh ?
Yes, of course. You wrote “different way” - different from what? You mean RSA is not only the cipher but also used for the key exchange?
We need to install into something like /usr/brlcad to avoid massive damage to the system libraries
Err. They are one and the same.
But that appears to conflict with the “standard” install layout
ugh. where do I put kdenlive to unmask it? I tried package.keywords but that never seems to work for me (x86 keyword btw)
Is there a way to ask for an exception to the policy?
I suppose OTP is the only safe way
wepy, are you shure key-timing works ? depending on if im listening to someone or im typing a password or coding some stuff or whatever time between keystrokes varys
starseeker, what are you installing ?
although with SSH having pf security, you could at least exchange OTPs over an ssh channel safely
No, trying to create an ebuild fit for inclusion in Gentoo
CareBear\, any asymmetric crypto algorithm (such as RSA) is suitable for key exchange.
package.unmask does not work either
it works very well both with audio and by sniffing a network connection
starseeker, ok, and what is brlcad ? folder or binary ?
BRL-CAD is a serious CAD package by the Army Research Lab Source code.
wepy, are there any tools available ? id like to try that out lol
there is I think.. there was a research paper put out there talking about it, I bet they made the tool available
Would you say DH is better or worse?
but you’d hafta google it
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=77197
starseeker, let me look at it
k
wepy, well i guess ill google for a minute or two
If the network is your only problem there are solutions.
try ssh keystroke timing attack
I’d worry more about data remanescense and/or emission.
CareBear\: what’s that?
Key-Stroke Timing and Timing Attack on SSH www.stanford.edu/~mlustig/SSH.ppt lol how the hell publishes stuff as ppt
CareBear\: you talking sneakernet?
who the hell *
there’s a pdf somewhere too
wepy, i have openoffice on the other box ill make a pdf myself
Remanescense = your RAM has measurable physical wear and tear based on whether a bit typically stores 1 or 0
The catch is, some of the key BRL-CAD libs have name conflicts with standard system libraries. The BRL-CAD system needs to remain compatible with some ARL classified modules, and their name selection predates modern Linux/Unix naming conventions (it’s been around a while…)
CareBear\: ha! damnit!
Emission = google for tempest
starseeker, which files conflict ?
CareBear\: I could never believe that tempest stuff sounds fake CareBear\: aren’t LCDs immune?
I have a list in my report from revdep-rebuild: https://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=109012
Yeah.
I read a neat paper on snooping my monitoring processing time..
A couple of us have nuked our boxes by putting it in the wrong place
but that was just way out there
But if you can sync with the CRT and can measure light intensity emitted then you can get at least some kind of view of the screen.
starseeker, look at it …. looking
Think CRT near window in dark room. And spy van in the street.
CareBear\: I got a neat setup for email: off the vpn: squirrelmail with one time pass (5 min expire); on vpn: normal pass. squirrelmail even does GPG nowadays
OpenDX uses /usr/dx, so I’m hoping BRL-CAD can use /usr/brlcad
(required separate password)
So better trust your server then.
heh yes..
CareBear\: 3com 3C905CX
starseeker, is opendx in portage ? i am not an expert cad user but have used qcad, and autocad and keycad when i used evil systems years ago
CareBear\, hard to say - they’re different solutions to the same problem, and rely on different mathematical properties for security (difficulty of prime factorization vs discrete logarithm). ECC is starting to gain ground in key exchange protocols.
CareBear\: step by step i’m adding measures.. eventually i’ll move to encrypted vms, and I want to add an http proxy that only allows certain GET/POSTs
http://www.cypherpunks.to/~peter/usenix01.pdf
yes
sci-visualization/opendx-4.3.2-r1
CareBear\: Do you think is possible to configure it with a certain IP and gateway? So it can access to that rom-o-matic.net thing directly
It’s not a CAD system - IIRC it’s a heavy duty visualization system IBM wrote it
hello everybody, any idea why addjailsw is still
Sorry, you’re way off. Spend a few days reading up on PXE, DHCP and TFTP and look at rom-o-matic.net again.
hello everybody, any idea why addjailsw is still “Guessing vi args(-c q)” since an hour please ?
Nice.
CareBear\: rom-o-matic.. makes it easy to make initrds or something?
Etherboot images Now off.
I’m planning on making a “portage ready” ebuild (to the best of my ability) this weekend and make a try a getting it into the main portage archive, but I know the /usr/brlcad issue might raise a few eyebrows
hmm, the version of opendx in portage is old
#gentoo-dev-help would be the place to talk about ebuild writing.
Thanks :-). I found all the policy stuff, but the difficulty with BRL-CAD is there are technical reasons it can’t use the standard layout policy
whats the package for gnome tool kit called gtk = doesnt work
gtk+
then it will be a challenging first ebuild and a fairly challenging thing to get accepted into portage — you should check out the sunrise project over at #gentoo-sunrise
starseeker, can you post your ebuid ?
thx
I’ve worked on ebuilds before - the Maxima ebuild in particular
also, it’s gimp, not gnome
what kind of ebuild?
I like Nissans too, but I didn’t realize they took an ebuild now
There are a few in the bug report - my latest version needs some pruning Heh. Sorry - Maxima = Computer Algebra System, http://maxima.sf.net
you might as well put your ebuild in that sunshine overlay or something.. the devs nowadays don’t put in new ebuilds unless they want to maintain them
looks like gtk came with gnome packages
hi all, im trying to allow a website i have running in apache with php use the “mail()” command. but I’m not sure what to do to make it work (ive tested it, no errors, but no email). any ideas?
I think I knew that
starseeker, i just wanted to see where you are at. i am not going to try it, at least not now
One sec… https://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=130670 If that doesn’t work I can paste text somewhere That’s unfortunate - BRL-CAD is easily one of the most powerful open source CAD system out there.
look into being a “proxy dev” (though i personally never had any luck) or perhaps a maintainer of some other math package ebuild will adopt yours
Is the gentoo-science team still active?
starseeker, do you have collision protect on ?
I should
starseeker, looks like brl-cad is messing up libz, librt, libpng, and a few others ?
Yep. The miracle is that my system stayed up at all.
starseeker, can you check to see if collision protect is on ?
I haven’t disabled it - is there some way to check that it is on? That bug report is old I’ve re-installed since then, and a careless manual install can do the same thing.
Why does dev-util/libconf ALWAYS need to be rebuilt every time I run revdep-rebuild? I can recompile libconf, then immediately run revdep-rebuild and it still tells me I need to recompile dev-util/libconf.
My current system is OK.
starseeker, emerge –info | grep -i collision
Returns empty
ati-drivers 8.41 came out.
starseeker, thats not good
cool.
starseeker, emerge –info | grep -i features
Hmm. How do I enable it? FEATURES=”distlocks metadata-transfer sandbox sfperms strict”
anyone tried the 8.41?
hey, im trying to set up a dual-monitor config but having difficulties. using nvidia geforce 5200 ultra gfx card. been following this: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Dual_Monitors i dont want to use twinview, so im following the appropriate non-twinview part specifically, my primary display is still working but my secondary remains with “no signal”
no problems, but have collision-protect in FEATURES
starseeker, add FEATURES=”collision-protect sandbox” to make.conf
I used to have two hard disks and two CD-ROM drives in my machine
Ah, one of the guys on #gentoo-science suggested /opt/brlcad - is that still for binary only or is it OK for this situation?
I just added two more hard disks for a RAID, and now I’m hearing lots of drive clicking
starseeker, read make.conf example it will explain features, or read man emerge or man make.conf, forgot which has info in it starseeker, i have collision protect on
Has anybody here ever overloaded their power supply?
array is synching at the moment..
OK, sounds good. My make.conf has survived a few installs and philosophically dates to the stone ages
no, the array shows as active
starseeker, i would start with collision-protect and it will tell you which files its trying to over write, package is try to write file owned by another package….
that’s what I thought too — the clicks are loud, as though the head is zeroing
check your voltages, why do you suspect it’s the PSU?
Thanks
starseeker, then you can look at it and try to figure out why its trying to over write those files, starseeker, ideally it shouldnt
did you check the newly added hard drive for badblocks?
I read a post somewhere that someone with a very similar configuration — added one or two disks to reach four
I know why it’s trying to overwrite them - the BRL-CAD library naming conventions pre-date modern Linux and unix library names.
had only a 350 W power supply put in a 450 W and the problem vanished
They got there first, but apparently nobody checked with them
oh, and what cpu,gpu?
starseeker, not sure if they modified those packages or not. but you might want to find out why. then hopefully it can build and install with little modification and install to standard location
it’s a Duron 1100
Not modifications, different libraries (I think)
well check your voltages, expecially the 12v rail.
Going to seep, see you later
use lm_sensors
We’ve discussed this with the project lead a few times
starseeker, i am not familiar with the pre-date, could you perhaps pm me and explain or provide an example ?
will an overload draw down the voltage? I thought this would be a current thing
pre-date - BRL-CAD has been in development for decades - it is older than Linux.
yes and cause instability and sudden shutdowns.
hrm any1 know why my cdrom wont work ….. i have it mouned in fstab
whew the problems never end lol pr00f what do you mean not work?
explain?
lm_sensors — is that a command line tool?
yea
starseeker, since this is drifting off topic here, could i pm you ?
hi all, anyone use conky? need some advice
i do
Sure
well when i install linux i mounted the hda and cdrom in fstab
I presume I can emerge this, right?
how do i set cpu temperature ?
yea, you might have to add some support in kernel.
http://pastebin.com/m7155cb77 someone have any ideas why emerge is puking itself suddenly and if this is recoverable?
i pop a cd after all said and done to test and it says unable to mount selected valume
i think I have that, but I’ll check
${acpitemp}
pr00f error message? what do you mean “doesn’t mount”
check dmesg
i mean, does it error out
this a joilet cd?
or does it mount yet when you go to the dir its empty etc pr00f gotta be really concise when it comes to expressing your problems here
fan status?
${freq_dyn} for frequency.
“unknown filesystem type “audo”
audo? heh is that right?
don’t think it monitors that. auto not audo
is it explained in the variable conky ?
yes
fstab?
yes
yep likewhoa http://pastebin.com/m7155cb77 you have any thoughts on repairing this?
anyone know how to test bandwidth?
the variable conky did not explain quite well though.. dunno which hardware it is applicable to…
i need to know why my DSL is suddenly slow
umm python-updater?
likewhoa no clue =s
all hardware.
likewhoa this system has been sitting for a while unhooked
how current is the portage you’re using?
and I plug her in and she’s borked
and yes, python-updater
rhombus back in the day old =s
run that.
ok “ it? that’s the name ok lemme try
yes
how do i set up mail monitor?
get a new portage snapshot
it’s in the manual.
muked lol puked up k lemme grab a snap
http://conky.sourceforge.net/config_settings.html
what did it puke up?
sorry, could you point me to its address…just gonna say that
python-updater?
http://conky.sourceforge.net/variables.html read both Analog
thx likewhoa.. appreciate it
np hold a sex i mean second.
rhombus same type stuff and said cannot find PORTDIR lemme pb it
another error?
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-536617.html check that out, i made it.
ok
athlon xp 2200+ = K6 family or K7 family? thanks
w
http://pastebin.com/d6854696d thats the new one
http://weboperative.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=18&pos=7 sample screenie of my conky.
get a new portage snapshot
i’ma try a new snapshot in the proc of it
good idea.
any1 ever see a mount:block device /dev/cdrom iis write protected, mounting read only mount: /dev/cdrom:can’t read superblock?
an athlon is K6 or K7 family?
just odd it worked when I powered down
listen to what rhombus suggest.
k7
thanks :d
wrong syntax. it’s mount /mnt/cdrom; if you got fstab setup for it. or mount -t auto /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom if not.
hey, i have an audigy 2 i have sound playing from the first output which isn’t the one i need. i’ve been search through the forums also, but i can’t seem to find how to change the outputs im using gentoo 2007 w/ alsa, thanks in advance boxy
ftab = /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom /auto /noauto,user 0 0 fstab*
no / in front of auto
Where should i report a bug in nautilus-cd-burner?
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,user 0 0
sry there isnt
bugs.gentoo.org
can anyone suggest a good movie editor/creator for Gentoo?
likewhoa, i should report it to gentoo instead of gnome?
dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,user 00
how do I enable smb support for konqueror?
cinerella?
thats my fstab….
yea
likewhoa, kk, thx
likewhoa you mean rhombus
them mount /mnt/cdrom; should work.
what?
oh yea
what?
hey if i hit eject on the cdrom drive is says unable to open /dev/hdb…???
bobber205, I’m assuming kde-base/kdebase-kioslaves would want the “samba” USE-flag, not a KDE user thou
ok. wth do I do to unmask a package masked by x86?
who is cinderella?
cinelerra-cvs http://cvs.cinelerra.org
still says :block device /dev/cdrom iis write protected, mounting read only mount: /dev/cdrom:can’t read superblock?
like, whoa — hmn, cinelerra is kind of a pig, though…
great video/audio production tool.
ah. I tried seeing if knoqueror had that use flag
so I’ve heard… it’s pretty amazing
application
well, then you have cli options, mencoder, ffmpeg, transcode…
isn’t using environment variables on the cml line bad?
but it needs a lot of horsepower… I was hoping for something dumber, like Windows Movie Maker
don’t suggest keywords in command line please.
I just want to make a simple slide show MPEG with music
cinelerra isn’t BAd per se, just weird to use. my videos LOVE to stutter when played back
take a pill.
I would prefer to know the correct way access_d
like, access_d, no — you’re giving people dangerous advice
no don’t give out wrong advice.
what’s the way? packagename ~x86 in package.unmask or package.keywords?
keywords
so you have had problems making videos that don’t stutter with cinelerra?
package.keywords,package.mask,package.unmask read man portage
that sounds like something was incorrectly encoded… not necessarily cinelerra’s fault
if it’s missing keyword, you use package.keywords, for masked packages it’s package.unmask.
back in a sec, I have to reboot.
yeah. it is. sometime it works sometimes it doesn’t. if I press play twice (pausing each time) it usually plays. if I start from the beginning it ALWAYS works
he should use dvd-slideshow
- media-libs/mlt++-20060601 (masked by: ~x86 keyword) here’s what trouble I am having:
hay how often do i get a newbe saying he/she haveing trouble installing gnome or kde and cant figure out why?
echo “media-libs/mlt++ ~x86″/etc/portage/package.keywords
do you*
hardly.
ugh. now there’s media-libs/mlt-0.2.4 (masked by: ~x86 keyword) - media-libs/mlt-0.2.2 (masked by: ~x86 keyword)
lol you know my problem hahahahahah
do the same but without ++
well if so ask then if they put “doc” in USE=”"
my battery is shot in the box so my date is 2002 =s durrrr
good job
that’s why portage gimped out well I didn’t notice until I went to x the snapshot then it was all complaining =\
doc flag in my make.conf was stoping me from installing kde and gnome
not using ntp?
can you explain why doing it command line is any more dangerous than unmasking it in a file? iirc, they both unmask the package, which would be the dangerous part (installing a dev package, which could be broken)
likewhoa the box has been offline for about a month
yea doc USE flag causes some problems on certain packages i.e xorg-docs.
likewhoa I should prolly install that
yes you should.
isn’t there a diff between two types of ntp? one that sets drift over time
is there any other flags like that to tave me time later own down the road?
and one that just fixes it instantly at boot?
are the mirrors slow for anyone else?
cos I’d need the latter wepy yes, took like 20 min to d/l a snapshot =\
i’m on the east cost in the US, and i’m not getting good speeds from PAIR..
because after the user upgrades it’s system, portage will downgrade all those packages on them. it’s best to use package.{keywords, mask, unmask} otherwise you risk downgrades.
wepy I used osl or whatever and I got around 40k/s avg
where are you geographically?
north alabama
hm
normally I can pull around 1.5M/s
that’s why ACCEPT_KEYWORDS is not recommended in the command line. understood?
2MBps on ftp.free.fr/mirrors/ftp.gentoo.org
so I know it’s not my connection
what’s another kind of site I could use to test bandwidth?
google for it
okay thanks. I didn’t really consider an “accidental downgrade” “dangerous.” sorry.
i just need a big file somewhere
one sec.
if I wanna test my b/w I just grab a binary off of news groups =p
likewhoa, Is there any other flags like that to not put in make.conf That will save me time later own down the road?
right now avg is 1546k/s
you can test bandwith at www.dslreports.com
nope
just doc?
only use doc USE flag on packages you really need documentation for.
don’t have a browser on the machine
ok
hm
Could anyone help me get spell check working in open office?
big file - /dev/zero
I have a paper to wrte and I assume I forgot to emerge something.
you mean, in another language that english ?
no, I need it to check english
am i in here as root?
_
wget http://66.135.55.160/5gb use seek in dd to generate the file faster
mailto:n=root@cpe-065-188-201-045.triad.res.rr.com
only got 40K/s
avg 700kb here. checkout dslreports.com/stest
where are you and where is that server?
^that’s you DavidProck1981
don’t have a browser on the box
wepy hrm
hmm. kdevnline seems decent
try diff mirrors?
i know i’m getting 6% packet loss to the first hop though tried a lot of mirrors
nyc and server is in texas.
sounds like your route is borked =s
i’m just trying to do some due dilligence so i don’t waste the time of the techy before i contact my ISP hm dsl sucks ;\
i hate dsl =s
DSLOW
i’m totally going to colo this box next year
I never had good luck with it
i can host you a site.
my idea of colocation is shoving wireless in a box and sticking it in the other room to give me more room on my desk =\
I think I just forgot to install english along with open office =/
time to learn a new language then
wepy you can coloc yer box into my room here for 1$ a month http://www.maj.com/gallery/robeph/Misc/random_stuff_023.jpg I’ll find a place for it
I know afrikaans and french to some extent! hehe
is there a way to see what packages are listing a certain package as a dep?
wow, open office takes a long time to install even when you dont compile it
wepy, well here in germany DSL is rock stable
njbair like which packages depend on package A?
woa, how’d you get all of that stuff? heh
qdepends
wepy =s it’s all archaic
you have a good connection?
does that list the ones i have installed or all of them in portage?
some dec alphas, two velociraptor (cobalt pre symantec), a codart II, and a bunch of random scrap boxes it’s all just distcc/dist computing crap I use no
all
it’s 512kbps up and 10mbit down
so i have to sort through to find out which are installed, huh?
I was kidding ;p
who knows where the default mysql socket is?
heh
3306
not port, socket
what’s that init channel for?
you mean /var/mysql/mysql.sock?
i bet every package installed on my system is out of date and needs updating =\
yes, except I don’t have /var/mysql
anything linux/bsd and beer let me check.. /var/run/mysqld
thanks
how do i change the output that alsa uses?
btw, if Im already asking.. do you know where mysql keeps it’s data?
what is libexpat.so.0 related to? apparently it’s a shared lib
/var/lib/mysql/mysql /topic
help. sometimes my router refuses to dchp my comp. other windows comp in network doesnt have problem. problem only solved by rebooting the router router is a dlink500t
upgrading to 2.0 i assume
thanks
not really gentoo related, but you might want to check for firmware updates on router.
lin00b wireless?
I was emergine world — so I bet
nope, wired
unless that router is gentoo powered.
eix expat
/msg mzbot faq expat
likewhoa it could be related if only his gentoo box doesn’t work correctly could be some weird dhcp buggery
well, i was kinda wondering if the problem is with my comp, since others in network work fine
lin00b my suggestion, as to all who use dhcp without need (ie not a roving wireless box) STATIC IP
ok, i’ll reconfigure
dhcp is overused but that way, even if dhcp is crap on the router, it should work
but its so easy(tm)
lin00b actually its easier to go static =\
yea disable router dhcp and let your machines set static ips.
okok
likewhoa its what I do
thnaks
same here.
especially since I have like a crap load of headless boxes
how did you fare with your portage snapshot?
trying to find them if they dhcp a dynamic ip that isn’t what It last was
it wont hurt to do “emerge gnome” on one terminal while at the sametime doing “emerge -FD gnome kde-meta” on the other terminal, Will that do any harm?
then I’m buggered
I recently updated my system and now my screen blanks and turns off

rhombus my system clock battery = fail
seems I made the bash script wrong or something — is there somewhere I can wget it?
yea it will emerge stuff twice.
I was x’ing the tar and it was complaining it was 2002 I was like oops
wow — bizarre error to be cause by a screwy date
get what?
don’t you have ntp installed?
the expat issue — mzbot tells me to make a sh script

another question, seems that in one of the numerous updates i did over the past month, i broke kde’s sound system. used to work fine using alsa w/o arts. but now it complains arts not found and alsa .9 not defined in libsound.so.2
copy/paste the command from mzbot. want me to link it for you?

oh in that case, it’s ok.
firefox is affected — I can’t go anywhere via link effected?
but you can setup parallel-fetch in make.conf FEATURES. affected.
ok i did that to save my self a pinch of time
thanks
parallel-fetch?
want me to put in a file so you can wget then cat|xargs?
dudes, I need to figure out how to get my machine to stop blanking the screen.
yes
what is it
if you can
probably a long time
does fetching in parallel to compilation
i compiled it on a dual core pentium 1.8ghz.. took FOREVER
one sec.
thanks so much
does it give u hte status of both?
thanks
or does it keep the fetch info hidden?
wget http://66.135.55.160/pozican hidden.
rhombus got some funky power saving settings?
perhaps — I just don’t have the first clue about where to change them

get it again, then chmod +x it, and run it after. iirc - if i recall correctly
no worries, I figured it out.
ah what was it?
what is that?

Hi everyone. I just emerge –sync(ed) and emerged gentoo-sources (linux-2.6.22-gentoo-r5); did a zcat /proc/config.gz .config/config.gz; then a make oldconfig and I get: arch/i386/Kconfig:94: can’t open file “kernel/time/Kconfig”. Any ideas why? Where is that file? There isn’t even a ‘kernel’ subdir off /usr/src/linux
