HWO, mtu is the awesome version of MIT

keyword .. “releases”

So where is rawhide support?

oh, I C’

there isn’t “rawhide support”

support = wrong word

#fedora-devel (I think)

Ok, I’ll pop over there.

have phun

#fedora-devel is not a support channel .. but you may get some advice

Some of this stuff is generic fedora help though

SSssshhhh

the problem is .. why are you running f8 instead of f7?

It happens that I’m trying f8, but I would have similar questions with f7

is it possible to change the default behavior of xorg where by it guesses my resolution on every boot, using the wrong resolution if the monitor is turned off?

you are going to hit a great big HUGE wall eventually running -devel

How so?

edit /ect/X11/xorg.conf

HWO, and add what again?

code that just wont run unless you really know how to get back into your machine…just as an example.

Oh, I know that. I’m reasonably competent

video card and monitor plz..

HWO, Geforce 400, Viewsonic 19″

if you can stand the headaches..I ran -devel from fc2 to 5 and I gave in to the stable what mode do you desire and is this a widescreen

HWO, GeForce FX 5200 HWO, i already have the modes set HWO, they have been ever since i installed F7

I’ll most likely run a minimal system and run my main system as a xen guest running a stable release

take out the lowest res you will never use

HWO, ok

that would be alot safer

whats the easiest way of running xwindow remotely?

So, what value of $arch should I use in –target=$arch to build the module for kernel-xen ?

just a sec

HWO, that didn’t work

why not use i686 or if amd use the appropriate target xen shouldnt matter here

Because I’m running kernel-xen The kernel module is specific to the kernel that is running For example, on my other desktop, I’m running FC6 and have 2.6.22.2-42.fc6 installed The kmod-nvidia-100 package is kmod-nvidia-100.14.11-1.2.6.22.2_42.fc6.i686

/var/tmp/bmpx-0.40.3-root-JKnife/usr/bin/beep-media-player-2″ what is the prefered way to fix that?

You don’t have permission to access /index.html on this server.

in %install just do ln -sf?

Check /var/log/messages for SELinux entires

ok will do

why does my dhcpd log show that the dhcp server is sending a DHCPREQUEST every 12 seconds, even though its configured for static IP.

i cant find anything…try xen as the target but I think it’ll explode on ya

nothing at this time, is disabling selinux if this is just a testing server a good idea?

Got an answer in #fedora-devel –define ‘kversion VERSION’ –define ‘kvariants “”‘ As well as being told that I should ask the question in #fedora

blog that lol -developers do have a sense of humor be w/ you in a sec

HWO, ok

your table is ready, sir. follow me.

any other suggestions as to what it could be?

pastebin your xorg.conf Section “Screen” lol no there shouldnt be an issue disabling selinux temporarily

HWO, http://rafb.net/p/sLg9v840.html zcat, what’s the special of the day?

odd res 1280×960 on a 19″

i did disable it and still the same problem tho :/

HWO, it’s 4:3 HWO, i’m pretty sure it’s the same aspect ratio as 800×600 and 1024×768

Hey firewing1

dsch04, hey

how do I access xwindow from a xp machine?

dsch04, I don’t usually hang out here but if you need help ping me and ask me to come

Install an X server.

So, I installed the nvidia module SRPM and ran this command: rpmbuild –define ‘kversion kernel-xen-2.6.21-2936.fc8′ –define ‘kvariants “”‘ -ba nvidia-kmod.spec

I need to run a few application remotely, but they run in xwindows only; so ssh is not ok

Look at vnc

Does the nvidia kmod even work with Xen yet?

don’t think so.

Works on FC6

ah, you might need an additional “–target i686″

No, not vnc. freenx.

or “–target x86_64″

Or… install a X server.

-bb –target i686 –sign

oh - I wouldn’t bother with Xen…. It’s playing with fire. But if you do, make sure to build the Xen module with the Xen kernel

is that instead of the –define switches, or as well as? I want/need xen for virtualisation

kversion should be the full kernel version, not the kernel package name.

dsch04, in addition - keep the –define switches

add this into Monitor section - Modeline “1280×960″ 157.50 1280 1332 1492 1728 960 961 962 1006 +hsync +vsync

ivazquez, good point

mlucool, you’re stumbling over basics. it works out of the box but now you’re in an unknown state

rpmbuild –define ‘kversion 2.6.21-2936.fc8′ –define ‘kvariants “xen”‘ -ba nvidia-kmod.spec –target=*ARCH*

OK, where do I get that from? uname -a ?

ctl+alt+backspace

pembo13_com, how’s system-config-backup coming along?

HWO, just to be clear, xorg is working

pembo13_com, I tried checking it out but the SVN is down

firewing1, college…. not a spare hour

I know, this is a test

firewing1, yah, sorry about that, haven’t moved it to my new server

pembo13_com, no problem dsch04, yeah dsch04, uname will tell you the kernel version (uname -r)

DOG the bounty hunter is on, gotta go watch

firewing1, thanks for the zip file awhile back

hey Guys

I’ll check back in during commercial

pembo13_com, no problem - I have updated ones coming up soon if you’d like… They’ll be on diffingo.com

HWO, i’ll have to try that later, i’ve since left the machine, with mythtv running firewing1, sweet, hopefully i’ll meet you again at some point where i’m not too tired to go bookmark that site laying down this machine now, peace

later dsch04, “rpmbuild –define ‘kversion `uname -r`’ –define ‘kvariants “xen”‘ -ba nvidia-kmod.spec –target=*ARCH*” is a shortcut for the current running kernel

Hmmm. I suspect that the reason it is not building for the older kernel is that kernel-headers is the newer kernel kernel-headers-2.6.23-0.169.rc5.git1.fc8

you may want the src to be with you aswell.

dsch04, could be - make sure you have the latest kernel, kernel-devel and kernel-headers

a lil star-wars joke

That command still builds against the 2.6.23 kernel I got it Is there a pastebin for this channel?

just use any you want

OK

any will do most use rafb or pastebin

These are the kernel-related packages installed: http://pastebin.ca/692911

dsch04, I’m speaking with kwizart on #livna dsch04, he does most of the xen testing for nVidia - The last known working version was 9631 in FC6

yeah, i had no luck with nvidia + xen

Ugh

i recommend slexy.org

I recommend anything BUT slexy.org.

bad form :P

if I want to access xwindow from a winxp, do I need an app like exceed?

No, bad form is having a color scheme of hot pink on brown. Yes.

hello

ivaz, that was to me?

Although there are some gratis X servers available for Win32.

ivaz- is it possible to do this with only putty?

You. Need. A. X. Server.

ifconfig: command not found

“command not found?” A: Run the command AS ROOT after switching users with “su –login” or “su -” in order to get root’s command PATH so the command WILL be found; don’t run “su” by itself. If it’s still not found, then either it’s not installed in a standard path location (echo $PATH), is not executable (chmod a+x), is in your current dir (./runme), or you’ve spelled it incorrectly.

ugh

ivaz — can you provide a name?

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22x+server%22+windows

xazo, export PATH=$PATH:/sbin:/usr/sbin xazo, Make it set at loging time - add it to .bashrc login*

ah. i wonder what happened to cause this to stop working. thanks for the tips! good knowledge

Nothing broke in the first place.

ok, what changed? lol

Nothing.

EvilBob, ping

Can someone help me with this message from SELinux? http://pastebin.com/d40748c5d

Frost here tonight Jef…

EvilBob, you might want to check your repo_sync configuration and make sure your handling the development re-organzation from Fedora to Packages

did you try running the command it suggested? restorecon -v /etc/ld.so.conf.d/fglrx.conf

walterwoj, might not be a big deal

EvilBob, i looked over the run of it here using the configs you pointed me to.. and Im not rsyncing the Packages subdirectory

I will check it out tonight

evil_steve, that is owned my kmod-fglrx.. not sure if it would have context defined walterwoj, ldd /usr/bin/glxinfo | grep libGL

EvilBob, you might be pointing to mirrors that haven’t make the change

it should, I’ve found every single time SELinux tells you to do a restorecon, that will invariably fix the problem

EvilBob, frost? I’m not sure if we are gonna have a frost here or not… lots of fog this week

i would expect it will just take the parent context?

it will. until it’s been edited by something like a gui or a config command

EvilBob, yesterday I had fog all the way up to the 7th floor of a building that’s probably a couple hundred feet above the valley floor

Or mv’ed instead of cp’ed.

/usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so.1 (0×05ea7000)

/usr/lib/libGLU.so.1 (0×0582c000)

i really don’t think a file context will change on edit, but i might be wrong

Nope.

walterwoj, well that is correct, which means the content in /etc/ld.so.conf.d/fglrx.conf applied

when I did the RH300, the advise was “after every edit, do a restorecon, as it can change the context of the file”

walterwoj, i don’t think that audit is really stopping the function of the config

s/advise/advice/

that hurts my brain, i’d love to see that documented somewhere

from before, I changed the root directory in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and reset, now I get “You don’t have permission to access /index.html on this server.” but I set that file and that folder to 755. Any ideas (its not selinux either). Error log is just saying premission denied

mlucool, if you change the location of the docroot, you need to make sure you’ve got +x on *all* dirs leading up to it.

ahhhh ok ill do that cmod -R do that for me?

mlucool, don’t do -R

daMaestro; lawl

why/

I already brought up the chmod -R 755

gotta use find and stuff

Spent the morning with the Red Hat Value2 Tour stop in Minneapolis today, Got a Red Hat Baseball cap…

mlucool; changing the *directories* permissions along with the files is a problem

EvilBob, what color?

I want a cap

EvilBob, ive got stylish black as well as incredibly retina scarring red

lol

hey, when i try and gointo my Mysql to add users and db’s i get the following error ” Can’t connect to local MySQL server through socket ‘/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock’ (2)

classic Black w/ the Shadowman Logo

dcookes; is it running? heh

all fixed thank you

I also got a red coffee mug, gave that to my wife as I don’t drink coffee

how do i check that?

how can I use the nouveau driver?

what? don’t drink coffee?

dcookes; as root: service mysqld restart

you’re weird bob

http://fedorasolved.org/server-solutions/installing-configuring-mysql-server/

tw2113; i don’t, either

So?

i already knew you were downhill

lol

just saying bob, continue on

your mom dresses you funny.

no, he drinks cases of mtdew

i get service: command not found

“command not found?” A: Run the command AS ROOT after switching users with “su –login” or “su -” in order to get root’s command PATH so the command WILL be found; don’t run “su” by itself. If it’s still not found, then either it’s not installed in a standard path location (echo $PATH), is not executable (chmod a+x), is in your current dir (./runme), or you’ve spelled it incorrectly.

nah, i dress myself weird

dcookes; heh… what a useless msg… er

LOL

dcookes; /sbin/service mysqld restart

PLZ

I drink more Mountian Dew than healthy people drink water

Why?

downhillgames, because you need to reverse the polarity of /dev/null

because zcat’s msgs are f’ing annoying

EvilBob, but… you smoke

says unrecognised service

I never cared for the taste of coffee

touche

dcookes; yum install mysql-server

thanks sorry im an idiot

haha np gl

HWO, downhillgames — just because YOU have heard the #1FAQ more than once doesn’t mean the those who trigger it have

no nvidia driver for F7 or F8

zcat; just because YOU didn’t type the line doesn’t mean it ISN’T spamming the channel needlessly but what do i know

i for one value zcats trigger

why?

EvilBob, because you need to reverse the polarity of /dev/null

LOL

one for fun

it’s surprising how many people take that one seriously

How do i tell my computer’s ip information?

ifconfig

walterwoj; internal or external ?

internal

you fingering zcat’s trigger…lol

what opsec said

itchy palms?

here’s an idea… just tell people to type /sbin/ or /usr/sbin before the path or better yet

what is the default root username and password for mysql?

Fedora can rip their head outta their *** about PATH

http://fedorasolved.org/server-solutions/installing-configuring-mysql-server/ follow my howto it’s answered there

thanks

lol

dcookes; also says in the terminal when you start mysqld for the first time

I already pointed him there

HWO; i know nothing. pay no attention to me. i’m stupid.

how do i reset my sudo password if i know my root password?

ditto

^_^ mlucool; su - passwd your user

Erm… your sudo password is your password by default…

but how are you logging in as your user?

wtf…I gotta C’ that

mlucool; yeah… sudo = your user pass HWO; PM ok?

sure

oh i thought it was supposted to be my root password

inside joke that cracked downhill up yesterday

mlucool, coming from suse? mlucool, that’s the default target pw there

ubuntu

i went from Captain Obvious to General Lee Obvious

marc is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.

Did you set up sudo? it is not set up by default

tw2113; ooooh you should be a comic. you have “material” now, i see.

i just stick to the internet chat room circuit

lol i did not, I think I miss ubuntu

mlucool; Fedora actually has a “root” account… you set the password at install you don’t *need* sudo

short circuit

like you do in ubuntu

badum ching

mlucool, fedorasolved.org

my stage name will be Johnny 5

sudo’s great for one-offs

yes

brb

thanks again people

no

how can i find the install location for cacti.. im looking for the cacti.sql file I import into my db

rpm -ql cacti rpm -ql cacti | grep -i cacti.sql

thanks

Is there anyone here that might be able to answer a LVM question?

**runs away** kleewyck2, i know enough about lvm to stay away from it

No one can answer unasked questions.

Ok I’ll ask .. I just upgraded from fc 5 to fc 7. everything seemed to go ok till I rebooted and it seems there is no lvm loaded with the installed kernel. lvm command returns a lock 1 error lvdisplay returns lock 1 error

what do you mean with “no lvm loaded” ?

all lvm command fail.. all pv commands fail pvdisplay fales. but when I boot from the rescue cd everything is there.

What is the exact error message?

system starts to boot then halts party way while loading lvm i’m just rebooting now.

just give us the exact error message to start with

locking type 1 initilization failed. like the lvm driver isn’t loaded ? there’s no raid0 in my lsmod

are you doing something silly, like still loading the old kernel image or something ?

not my intension to do that, it was an upgrade. it says fc7 for the kernel image.

lsmod | grep dm_

it looks like all the /dev/mdx devices are stop .. 4 dm_snapshot, dm_zero, dm_mirror, dm_mod

that sounds about right, but no raid0 module then how did you upgrade btw ? from install media ?

no raid0 I booted from dvd and said upgrade.

i have no clue if its safe to do a fc5 to f7 uppgrade directly, or if you realy need to upgrade to fc6 first

kleewyck2, did you layer lvm on top of raid0?

yes.

kleewyck2, you need to generate a mdadm.conf

ah, can be that yes

kleewyck2, It was Linux Software RAID?

thats what the raid0 module is yes

yes linux web hosting software raid

Ok. kleewyck2 Maybe the initrd omitted it..

kleewyck2, and there’s some bugzillas about upgrades going wrong with s/w raid

did you have a proper mdadm.conf file before uppgrading ?

kleewyck2, but the fix is usually mkinitrd in rescue

i got bitten by that

ok I didn’t do a mkinitrd in rescue.

i just had to manualy assemble all md devices, and generate new mdadm.conf and then all was happy go go

kleewyck2, http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bugs/F7Common#head-b783639381d82d7f2954bd207d0e000a15de8bef

there is a mdadm.conf with the correct md devices.

then i suggest you read the url burnin pasted, and follow whatever they suggest there

right just going there now thank you ..

does f7 create a password for mysql’s root?

nostar, There is no ‘mysql’s root’ There is just ‘root. Oh root as a user of mysql DB.. ok.

nostar; it says on the first run how to change the password.

mysql -u root fails

Hey Guys, im installing e107 and get the following mysql error “MySQL Reported Error: Access denied for user ‘daniel’@'localhost’ (using password: YES)” The table and user and user privs are correct i think it is a mysql issue?

hot damn i got it working juniper vpn that is

dcookes, http://fedorasolved.org/server-solutions/installing-configuring-mysql-server/

nostar service mysqld status

thanks

mysqld is running

mutk, then again e107 overwrites core files who knows what it overworte umutk, then again e107 overwrites core files who knows what it overworte/u

what up opsec

no as root nostar, as root ?

VileGent what?

mysql -u root as root?

VileGent yes and i tried -p with any possible password i could have ever used

how did you become root

su -

ok

how do i just wipe out any existing db data and start fresh?

not much

^_~

hi’

hey, it works to keep me awake

how gdm is started on every boot and after each X broken or killled?

better be organic

Zaki, bottom of /etc/inittab

heh. Mug root beer, actually

zcat, ok

you drink soy?

you understood that engrish?

zcat, i’d like to use Xdmx automatically

no i don’t

zcat, do i need to modify gdm’s config files for that?

i don’t eat things with carrageenan in them

i have the same gdm problem (i think hehe) it’s a perservative? preservative*

made from seaweed using industrial acids and solvents it’s a thickener toxic to humans

lovely

totally screws up your stomach lining and colon, making it very difficult to absorb nutrients and clogging your digestive system with a creamy coating amazing the things kids are doing with your food these daze keep the human cattle ignorant, off balance, sick, confused and upset/angry with each other

yeah! fight teh power! prison planet! heh

moo?

you can’t fight what you have no energy to fight.. or what you don’t even know exists

opsec, are you talking about Windows again?

no.. just life

Oh

without all these lovely cattle though, i’d actually have to work so .. thank you human cattle, for allowing me to never have to work again.

Before I go and buy a new graphics card, does anyone know if the nVidia GeForce 7300 LE is compatible with Xgl/Compiz?

opsec; yeah.. who would want to work?

aren’t all the LE cards bad news, low performance?

it’s so… productive bleck

i work on things i want to work on..

indeed i meant the population as a whole, not you

no one tells me when to get up or where to go or what to do.. i decide what’s important in my life and what isn’t

that’s fine and dandy, but completely not related to the topic at hand feel free to tirade off

i barely ever leave my ivory tower.

hehe

perhaps

ok on the LVM thing I fixed it…

opsec, better rethink your tax dodging before the socialist barbarians get to your gate

I’m really not familiar with the various graphics cards I just want something that will work

opsec, broadband, pizza delivery, UPS, and some organic soy milk, what more do you need?

oooo a slave

i don’t eat pizza or soymilk i’m not tax dodging

kleewyck2, and…

I had to follow step 42 of that bug report

the irs knows where i live and who i am .. they also know they have nothing to enforce.

zcat, taxation isn’t limited to the socialists

extract the initrtg.. then remake mdadm.conf and then rebuild initrdg

kleewyck2, cool. (those kinds of bugs are one reason i always do fresh installs vs upgrades)

kleewyck2, so did that jump start your upgrade? zcat, that bug hits fresh installs as well.

burnin, odd that it didn’t affect me. granted, no lvm, but s/w raid up the wazoo

opsec; you don’t file income tax?

zcat, I had to work through that bug on a fresh f7 install on a box that had no removable media, it was a net boot/install.

never have i’

you don’t *need* to

i’m not required to

i know

zcat, hmm, I thought it affected s/w raid too, perhaps its only lvm.

opsec; hold on. 2 seconds. PM coming your way (not channel-appropriate but i think you’ll like this)

downhillgames, he benefits from societies services and takes in cash but is proud of not paying taxes. he say he throws the local community a bone once in a while though.

I am running Fc6 and my USB jump drive does not show up. How can i get it to mount?

hjahahaha

that booted the system just fine after that.

kleewyck2, nice. nasty bug though.

heard of that before, opsec?

yea kinda ugly

i believe so

opsec; i enjoyed it. well… to the degree one can. pretty sickening as well

how can i network my Fedora desktop using the wireless router. No problem connecting 2 laptops, but dont know how to do it with Fedora.

i enjoy most things others find “uncomfortable” or “mentally challenging”

doubleA, open a terminal, su - and enter root password, then tail -f /var/log/messages while plugging the usb drive in and see what it says.

doubleA, go get a dlink wireless card for your desktop

opsec; ditto.

doubleA, usually plugging in a usb drive will pop up a link on your desktop.

opsec; 1 more link? (about some similar but in a different direction)

downhill, PM me 2 creative and funny potential names for a computer

on my other machines, whenever I put the usb drive into the usb port it shows up , but that has not happened on this machine with Fedora 6. my desktop is plugged into the router with an ethernet line

doubleA, yeah, so the the log files may give you a clue as to the problem.

hi

howdy

i’m gonna do it and i’ll get back to you in a minute

i got no dvd burner does fedora come on cd’s

only the livecds

live cd

where can i get a live cd from

opsec; i’m not saying i agree with everything… you know… i can think for myself but yeah, he makes a lot of good points and is very informed.

Azures, no friends or family with DVD burner?

Azures, torrent or the mirrors

http://torrent.fedoraproject.org/ torrents go quickly

im buying one but i just wanna test it first to see if i like it im moving from xp to fedora

why buy?

not much into alex jones type morons

opsec; *shrug* i don’t claim to be

http://mirror.cc.vt.edu/pub/fedora/linux/releases/7/Live/

i should download the rawhide live

no

i just use common sense.

can u install from live cd to

tw2113, not unless you want to test

that’s what i’m going for

opsec; i use what i learn to be true… not what i’m told as truth, though.

Azures, yes

if you gave me full access to your house and wallet .. i might look around once in while i’d expect others to do the same.. with me as well so i take appropriate steps

vile which live cd do i want kde or just live cd \

first time i’ll try out something in beta stages

same as system security ..

do you have a preference of Gnome vs. KDE?

opsec; and you’re saying you keep the government and what not on a leash?

Azures, the plain live

Professional Tomcat 5

as far as you’re concerned

uh dunno which one is the better desktop im moving from xp

we ourselves are analogous to a computer system

wolsni, he doesnt know

it returns 10 lines that begin with Sep 11. I pasted them to http://rafb.net/p/BSQR0829.html

then yeah, go with the plain livecd

opsec; people were meant for more, imo.

Azures, try both

i notice that as well

Fedora-7-Live-i686.iso

i’m saying i check myself before giving out any information and deflect in the appropriate directions when necessary

thats gnome right

yes

does fedora support realtek 8139 nw cards good

doubleA, did you have tail -f running while you plugged the usb drive in?

opsec; the long way of my non-descriptive, fluff, blanket statement, yes.

doubleA, nothing there has anything to do with usb, could be that your usb hardware is not working. udoubleA, nothing there has anything to do with usb, could be that your usb hardware is not working./u

i see every moment as if i am under attack. just as i look at my computers

i plugged in the usb and then ran the command you told me bi plugged in the usb and then ran the command you told me/b

decently.

who the hell made Southern = Vile ???

opsec; my biggest problem — i can get my brain pumped and working hard but it needs constant challenge. life is full of idiots that need dumbing down just to understand

have drivers generally

doubleA, you need to run the command first, and then plug in the usb drive, you should then see the messages related to the usb device scroll up the screen.

VileGent; i meant both of us. not that you were wrong

its just a place..sorry all!

vile can i pm u

downhillgames, you started out with this out of the channel, please return the discussion to there

mk opsec; do you mind /msg or isn’t there much interest in having a discussion?

Azures, keep it here to help others

party in fedora-social!

lol

i’m there

i’m not

My pc has a 3.0GHZ HT P4 1.5GB DDR2 And A X800 256MB GDDR3 Video Card Will Fedora Support All This im linux dumb

a what video card?

what video card

and my moniter is a acer widescreen

what video card

people show all these letters without saying what company made their card

ATI X800 Crossfire Edition same card as the x800xt

processor and memory is a given, those will work

is there a version of PHP 5.2x for fedora 6 that’s easy to install?

uh, yum install php crap that’s F7

that installs 5.1.6

_mattd, then upgrade to f7

IT WORKED! it scrolled up several lines, and then it opened the usb window. I have no idea what happened differently, but thanks. Any chance you can advise me on the network problem?

let me guess: some app needs php5 5.2

doubleA, do you already have a wifi card, or if its a laptop do you know the chipset?

ideally, yes. PDO, specifically. but no out-of-the-box apps - only things im writing otherwise, i’d stick with the OOB version of php

yum install php-pdo

oh - right on! it was already installed . i was thinking that it required php 5.2+

this machine is plugged in directly to the wireless router with an ethernet line. it’s a linksys G2.4 ghz.

doubleA, that makes it a routor

doubleA, oh, perhaps I don’t understand your network question, can you re-ask?

well, you have a point, but the other computers in the house that I want to network to are laptops and they are connected wirelessly

doubleA, what problem are you having

i want my laptop to communicate with my desktop to share files, mainly. i had no problem when i was switching from one laptop to another laptop using my wireless network to do it, but now I want to use my desktop, which runs Fedora6 , and i dont know how to set it up that was for you too

I think VileGent he is trying to cross the wired side of his router to gain access to the machines on his wireless side

doubleA, but the f6 box can get to the internet etc with no problems

using a linksys wrt54g

correctamundo

so the wireless and the wired are not on the same network?

f_newton, no he wants samba kc8hfi, yes they are

yes, they are all on the same network, a wireless router

well yeah he wants samba but still his router should see all the machines as well as each computer should be able to see each other on the network

doubleA, the laptops are windows ?

ok, sorry, I misunderstood. i’ll shut up

macs

ok, i must have missed that earlier, i’ll hush up and listen

i’ll take all the help i can get. thanks

doubleA, OsX?

yes

define what you mean by share cause at this point if it was me i would setup a nfs share on the linux box since OSX can mount nfs shares and i find nfs easier myself than samba

heh, nfs is a cinch compared to samba but if osx can do scp in its file browser thing then you don’t need nfs either.

true it can

oh, nice

VileGent, whatever happened to the day of just setting up hostfiles ?

scp sure is a lot of overhead

what i really want to do is move a bunch of files from my desktop to my laptop, and the best way to do that is through the router. it’s stupid to use a usb drive when they are on teh same network. mac makes it so simple any dumbass can do it, but i dont know how to make the fedora machine recognise the shared folder on the mac, or vise versa

anyone a member of grandcentral.com ?)

doubleA, why not use ssh

ssh?

yes ssh scp you have accounts on all boxes involved

since its inhouse why not just ftp?

sftp://1.2.3.4

sorry but what is scp?

f_newton, ssh is less hassle

secure copy

then ftp? really!

ftp doesn’t need encouragement. diediedie

doubleA, use cyberduck to connect to the f6 box with ssh

lol zc

cyberduck? osx apps have the funkiest names

Apparently you don’t run Gnome.

as you can tell, i’m not very swift with this. I did figure out how to connect 2 macs wirelessly, and i am pretty sure i could do it with windows also. Mac is already set up for it, and you can see the shared folder on the other computers. i dont know what these protocols are that you are suggesting such as cyberduck, etc. There is no good tutorial on fedorasolved on this.

doubleA, nope

cyberduck is an app for mac

mwilson, differently fungky

setting up samba to share the home dirs is pretty simple though that is, on the linux side

doubleA, do a /sbin/ifconfig on the f6 boxes ip

hello, anyone know where I can get help with getting my soundblaster 16 card to work?

then connect whith cyberduck on the mac

You’re actually running Fedora on a computer old enough that you can put an ISA card in?

yeah hehe seems to be working fine, cept for the sb

mwilson, I have two brand new networkboxes that each have two isa slots in them

Are they some esoteric soekris stuff?

Lumberhead, does system-config-soundcard see it

no,, and actually,, this is a pci card..

they’re survey machines…. w/ autodialers each autodialer can do 16 lines at once and there are two autodialers per box and the autodialers of this type are isa

it gives me a paragraph on Eth1 and another on Lo

eth1 should be your ip

i have that

doubleA, without a mac setting here i can help you any more

autopsy, you are back in phoenix?

aha.. checked the chipsete and it’s not a sb 16,, it’s an audioPCI card not found by system config soundcard

f_newton, Tucson actually.

thanks a lot. i can probably work through mac help and figure it out using the static ip hosting address of the fedora machine.

havent seen you around for a while how’ve ya bin autopsy ?

is there a default “shared” folder on Fc6?

Lumberhead, and lspci says its what

Pretty good.

glad to hear it… you shouldve stopped by here on your way and picked up this ml570

I was in too much of a rush.. or I probably would have .

skool is over then autopsy ?

can you just explain this one thing. I have two computers connected to the same network, and all i want to do is to see a folder from one of then show up on the other. Isnt that called networking 2 computers?

doubleA, thats called shareing which you can do with nfs but the problem is that you will not be able to do that mount if you are not on the same network ( laptops are mobile)

k, I have an ensoniq 5880 audiopci64 (CT4740) soundcard and its not working, but IS found by Audio configuration can anyone tell me why it doesn’t werk?

i suggest doing the ssh mounts when needed Lumberhead, system-config-soundcard does find it ?

yes

then explain what doesnt work

no sound,, shrug

plug in your speakers

heh

turn up the volume in alsa mixer

good one

they are both definitely on the same network even though the laptop is wireless. i am only trying to do this at home, so if nfs is the easiest way, that’s what i should try.

Lumberhead, alsacard to see what card you have. alsaunmute N using the number the alsacard command gave you..

doubleA, the ssh is the easiest

done, soundcheck and still no sound

what are you checking with

thats the easiest way to use scp/ssh/sftp to get files to and from your mac box.

system-config-soundcard

did you slide the bar all the way to the right

nod

Lumberhead, your head may rattle there but that doesnt help here at all

yeah, bar is all the way to the right and my head is definitely rattling

on the linux web hosting side, though, you can share your home directory pretty easily though

what is the easiest way? ssh? I hate to ask, but how do i set up ssh?

on the linux side, its already setu pand ready to go on the other box, open up a terminal and issue the cmd ssh username on the linuxbox@ip of linux box it should ask you about the keys, you can say yes there, then type in pwd of that user on the linux box

you are talking about sharing between 2 linux boxes, right, but I have 1 fedora and 1 mac

no, the mac box can do ssh. from the mac, do that. ssh is just a secure shell, if you wanna transfer files, use sftp or scp instead.

doubleA, ssh should be set up on both the macs and the pc already

to actually sftp itnto the other system. then you can do your file transfers

i have public folders set up on my mac, so any computer on my network should be able to access those folders, but i dont know how to locate them with my linux desktop.

and on the linux side, open up konqueror if you use kde and do the same thing, sftp://user@ip of the mac

doubleA, osX is based on NeXt which was a type of unix

i have never opened a terminal on the mac

doubleA, use cyberduck

ok, i’ll have to get cyberduck. also, i dont use kde.

if my grandmother profs can handle this you can to

you can use nautilus if you use gnome also…I think

how do I know if my nvidia drivers are enabled?

rpm -q kmod-nvidia

and then run glxinfo | grep direct. if it says no, then they probably arent

i do use gnome. I have to call it a night. THanks for all the help. I’ll come back to this next week after i play with it a little. thanks again

any way to have the xen vm config file access a card reader?

installing drivers now after the install, do I need to restart the x-server?

yes

damn, ok I’ll be right back

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL/ContributorStatus I am iterested in maintaining packages in EPEL, but I can;

#epel

thanks

EPEL?

yes EPEL for RHEL4/5

err i ment what does EPEL mean..

Extra packages for Enterprise Linux

ohh

would anyone like to help me get my soundcard working?

night fellas

nite

anyone?

Is the Emerald Theme Manager only for use with Beryl or can it be used with plain old Compiz?

OK im out for the night, thank you all for all your help today

gantrixx, it can be used with the new version of compiz ala compiz-fusion

do I have to install that?

i think so :3 http://devel.foss.org.my/~kagesenshi/repo/pub/ i think it is v0.5.2 and up that can use emerald and F7 comes with i think 0.5.0

yum search fusion results in nothing Is Beryl the same thing as Compiz Fusion?

yes/no. compiz fusion is the merge of compiz and beryl. And beryl was a fork of compiz in the first place.

my laptop shipped today! YEAH!

did you make sure you weren’t getting a broadcom wireless card in it first??

intel 4965

hmm, yeah, ok. that one works and at least it ain’t broadcom

anyone have a place i can upload bmpx 0.40.3 package (including a srpm)?

i’m out laters

I’m about to report a bug relating to suspend, I’m not sure what component to file the bug against.

people with Fedora accounts have space on fedorapeople.org it’s not a quirk? http://people.freedesktop.org/~hughsient/quirk/quirk-suspend-index.html

issue is this, comes back from suspend fine, problem only occurs when go to log out of desktop session, then no display on screen (X or console), system still running fine just can’t see anything.

Is Beryl the same thing as Compiz Fusion?

Anvil already told you

ok, so where do I find compiz-fusion packages I only find beryl packages

releases take time to reach stable distros Use beryl for now if you want the crazy plugins

I don’t need crazy plugins I was just wanting to use the emerald themes

well here is the srpm ftp://ftp.gr33nn1nj4.com/bmpx/bmpx-0.40.3-1.fc7.src.rpm (don’t everyone download it, my bandwidth is scarce as is) well here is the srpm a href=”ftp://ftp.gr33nn1nj4.com/bmpx/bmpx-0.40.3-1.fc7.src.rpm”ftp://ftp.gr33nn1nj4.com/bmpx/bmpx-0.40.3-1.fc7.src.rpm/a (don’t everyone download it, my bandwidth is scarce as is) well here is the srpm a href=”a href=”ftp://ftp.gr33nn1nj4.com/bmpx/bmpx-0.40.3-1.fc7.src.rpm”ftp://ftp.gr33nn1nj4.com/bmpx/bmpx-0.40.3-1.fc7.src.rpm/a”ftp://ftp.gr33nn1nj4.com/bmpx/bmpx-0.40.3-1.fc7.src.rpm”ftp://ftp.gr33nn1nj4.com/bmpx/bmpx-0.40.3-1.fc7.src.rpm/a/a (don’t everyone download it, my bandwidth is scarce as is)

bmpx? That anything like audacious? domain name passes the 133t test.

lol “fedora” was taken

heh

and i wanted something short; i’m up for suggestions, but it was f3dora.something or fedorap.something … so i hope you like i chose leet over fedora pee i was also thinking fpaste.something

278/paste/6… can’t connect for some upon click of “paste it!”

oh blah! thanks. /me fixes

nice touch with the logo hard hat btw

yeah, those images are on the wiki i’ll need to ask permission at some point :-/

daMaestro, how bout. fedora + rafb = fedorafb.org or, fedorayaps.org yetanotherpastesite

yeah, but this will be for the fedora people, and we can actually add/remove features.. there will be no ads, etc

paste.fedorasolved.org isn’t forwarding anymore

JohnMahowald, fixed zcat, i can fix that (i removed a lot of dns stuff recently) http://paste.fedoraunity.org does work

daMaestro, revised pastes don’t keep the syntax hilighting

also, yum install irc-help (this is not a package yet) .. and then we can have people: lsmod|grep nvidia|fedora-paste lol zcat, yeah, sorta by design, i can fix it; hol don ahhah and boom zcat, ok. fixed

daMaestro, neat. now it just needs the voyeuristic listing of all recent pastes.

yeah, that is already there.. i just have not decided where to show that data zcat, recommendations? wow, and there is a nasty css issue http://f3dora.org/paste/22 meh, that css issue can wait

so..those instructions for the PXE stuff

evil_steve, what about ‘em?

well, I wrote some, pushed them up to DaMaestro, then never heard anything more on them

oh… thinking about a different pxe thing here

i have only one processor but my proc temp applett lists core0 core1 and GPU… i get the gpu but which core is my cpu and what is the other?

do you have multiple cores, as in Intel Core Duo?

not last time i checked… how do i tell

cat /proc/cpuinfo

AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3800+

so no. I do get some seemingly bogus inputs for the temperature applet, I just use those that make sense

earlier today somebody gave me the RPM url of cinelerra, anybody know what it is offhand?

mot is it not available in a yum repo?

echo “repo list” | yum shell | grep enabled && rpm -qa | grep -i libquicktime dpaste.com

hey, just the man i was looking for i forgot the syntax of that libmjpeg-utils dep i downloaded cinelerra from freshrpms but something keeps telling me you had me getting it from livna sorry to ask you to do this, but can you repeat (short and sweet) what you said earlier today? it’s been a long day and i’ve forgotten i have the livna repo, but not freshrpms, by the way opsec?

mot patience is sometimes a requirement

evil_steve, link?

oh, um..linky..that means I need to log in

hi all. I forgot how to do this: forward a remote website (port 80) to a local port through ssh. can anyone please remind me? thanks

Hi. I’ve made a custom x86_64 R rpm package (w/o X deps). Even though it has a higher release number than the fedora R, ‘yum install R’ wants to install both i386 and x86_64. This becomes a problem when I use mock. Any ideas?

does fedora support 3d molecular visualization hardware? (3d specs)? NuVision just out of the blue… (I can google of course)

can I tweak timestamp format in ls -l ?

Any ideas why ‘yum install R’ wants to install R-2.5.1-102.fc7.x86_64 _and_ R-2.5.1-2.fc7.i386 even though they have different release numbers?

no idea man ls see –time-style sounds like the usual package sillyness

faceface, I believe yum didn’t do that -3 months ago 2 to 3

that is the nature of packages… one day they work, then next day they are all like UNSIGNED… UNFULFILLED .. UNDEAD! try “yum clean all” it may help

faceface, same problem

are you x86 or i386?

x86_64

strange that it would offer the i386… did you mess with your config? that should pick up values from uname perhaps you can re-install your yum config? else its a mistake in the package / repo

x86_64 normally installs both i386 and x86_64 packages. But I thought it would only do so if the packages were available at the same version/release.

oh… well… ball at the package maintainer

faceface, hmm - the x86_64 package is a custom R package I have compiled …

and repoed?

yes

rasmuson, if you dont specify an arch… yum will attempt to get the 32bit and the 64bit rasmuson, if you didnt make a corresponding 32bit available in your custom repo..well…

|DrJef|, even though they are at different release levels? |DrJef|, I only made the x86_64 available

were you just |Jef| a while back?

rasmuson, congrats.. you don’t something pathelogical rasmuson, err done rasmuson, considering how the fedora build system works.. you’ll never hit this particular situation with fedora packages rasmuson, i suggest.. you specify an arch rasmuson, yum install R.arch

|DrJef|, do you know if I can specify an arch in a spec file? The problem is that mock picks both archs up.

rasmuson, im sure you can configure mock to use yum’s exactarch rasmuson, i would not screw around and try to force this in a spec rasmuson, you need to find a way to configure mock

|DrJef|, thanks, I will try that. Exclude/includepkgs looks promising.

rasmuson, in fact… looking at the standard mock configs for 64bit.. the exclude is set for all .i*86 packages

|DrJef|, which I have commented out earlier …

rasmuson, why rasmuson, why on earth would you comment out the 32bit exclude?

|DrJef|, as you said, I screwed around

rasmuson, silly monkey

wow! where was I? nm

|DrJef|, thanks |DrJef|, how come rpm doesn’t get confused if two rpm packages (i.e. a i386/x86_64 pair) provide the same files ?

anyone around who’s managed to get a bluetooth dongle working in F7?

rasmuson, if they are exactly the same.. rpm considers them equivalent rasmuson, so essentially the arched version of the same package both “own” the files according to the rpmdb

|DrJef|, ok, I see. Thanks again.

hi i’m using FC7 i have my cron daemon running, but it doesn’t execute any of my /etc/cron.XXX scripts what can i do?

What exact “cron.XXX” script are you talking about?

any script in my /etc/cron.hourly or /etc/cron.daily ,etc folders

And just FYI, they dropped the “Core” part at 7 so it’s just F7. May help if you search google… So you put something in /etc/cron.hourly/foo and it’s not running?

yes the foo script is root.root 755

But if you do, from the shell, “/etc/cron.hourly/foo”, it runs correctly?

yes

You have looked in /var/log/messages?

there is no entry for crond process just for ntp service and samba

Is crond running? ps awwlx | grep crond | grep -v grep

0 i feel lost

What does “rpm -V vixie-cron” say?

notning nothing

Ok, that’s good. What is in /var/log/cron?

1 leonidas crond[29103]: (root) CMD (run-parts 2 leonidas crond[29109]: (root) CMD (run-parts for example i’m going to do a restart of service

Is there a recent entry for cron.jourly? cron.hourly?

1 leonidas crond[3299]: (root) CMD (run-parts 1 leonidas crond[3500]: (root) CMD (run-parts this is the most recent entry sorry i can’t find anything for “cron.jourly”

Are you SURE it’s not running? If it’s a script, can you add as the line right after the “#!” line “date /tmp/foo.out”, and then verify that that never shows up? Because it may just be that your script is running but not doing what you expect, say because of a path issue. From the logs, cron is running it. You can try manually running “run-parts /etc/cron.hourly”, but that is probably going to run fine as well.

ok, i’m going to try

I’d bet it’s an issue with cron not having the environment you expect, and because of that it is not having the results you expect, even though it is running the script.

in one of my scripts i use full paths

Still, I’d recommend you run as the first line something that is short and you can verify is or is not running. Because the logs show that run-parts is running the hourly crons.

run-parts /etc/cron.hourly

but /tmp/foo.out has not been created [root@leonidas cron.hourly]# ll total 8 7 8 #!/bin/bash

/tmp/foo.out

this is the script

I guess what you’ll have to do is dig into /usr/bin/run-parts to see why it’s not running your svn.cron. I don’t see anything that would prevent it. Luckily, run-parts is short. Probably could just do bash -xv /usr/bin/run-parts /etc/cron.hourly And dig through the trace information it writes out while running.

at the beggining of run-parts script AUX1=`cat /var/spool/anacron/cron.daily` AUX2=`date +%Y%m%d` [ “$AUX1″ == $AUX2 ] || exit 0 and always AUX1 == AUX2

Oh, I guess it won’t run it more often than once an hour.

i’ve just commented this lines, so run-parts /etc/cron.hourly does work

Mine doesn’t have that though. which run-parts

in FC4 run-parts script this lines don’t exist

rpm -qf /usr/bin/run-parts

/usr/bin/run-parts

morning Team Fedora…

crontabs-1.10-15.fc7

Do: rpm -V crontabs

..5….T c /etc/crontab S.5….T /usr/bin/run-parts what does it mean?

It means that your /usr/bin/run-parts is different (the md5sum changed) from what was installed.

i’ve just modified it

Yeah, but you also said that it had an “AUX” line at the top which mine definitely does not have in /usr/bin/run-parts

i hope this will work in redhat 8 the lines i’ve commented don’t exist

If you undo the changes you made, does the rpm -V still report the “5″? It must, because my run-parts has no reference of AUX*

..5….T c /etc/crontab …….T /usr/bin/run-parts

Interesting. And what do you get from: cat /etc/redhat-release ?

Fedora release 7 (Moonshine) is it the final version from Fedora 7, isn’t it?

No idea then, I must be misunderstanding something you’re saying because my run-parts absolutely has no AUX* lines guin:/tmp$ grep AUX /usr/bin/run-parts exit 1 grep AUX /usr/bin/run-parts I give up.

thank you very much for your help

Sorry I couldn’t help you.

yes, you’ve helped me

angelete it’s the latest release from fedora..

run-parts /etc/cron.hourly does work

if not, it doesn’t thank you and bye

Those lines say “Only run once in a given day”. But those lines shouldn’t be in run-parts they aren’t on my system. Oh, wait, your crontabs installed on your system is older than mine. You might try running updates on your system. Mine has “1.10-16.fc7″, yours has -15. Try a “yum update”.

Anyone here know how to tell if a .iso file really is an ISO image? That is, not just a .iso suffix.

file

and you can try to mount it, too

[kanarip@anakin Fedora-7-i386-CD]$ file F-7-i386-CD1.iso F-7-i386-CD1.iso: ISO 9660 CD-ROM filesystem data ‘”Fedora 7 i386 CD1″ ‘ (bootable)

fatal-: That’s no goog. I’m making a script to mount ISO images, which I hope to be able to support other image files (.nrg etc.) so I need to know which file system it is before I mount it. s/goog/good Yeah, that’s good. Thanks,

hi is there a package like debians taskmanager, which allows me to install package sets like Web Server or GNOME?

yum grouplist

arh, right it is called groups in Red Hat land. Thx

I am in a Linux machine that has yum, I guess that’s FCX how can I know the version?

cat /etc/fedora-release

cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS release 5 (Final)

almost guys, is there anything that comes with fedora to detect portscans? the iptables psd match doesn’t seems to be available

e_, snort

e_, i’ve used portsentry, but that only looks to be packaged for debian atm.

hi, all~

hi

Hi! I’m trying to decode an attachment from an email by hand… I copied out the base64 block into a text file, catted that into base64 -d, but the file isn’t valid, file(1) says its just “data” I can pastebin it if other people want to give it a try?

Where do I set my machines hostname (in /etc/sysconfig)? Do I only have to change the “network” file?

yep, you might want to make sure it has a valid entry in /etc/hosts too

use system-config-network

Thanks, I’ll make sure that is set, but I’m pretty sure it is. But I like to know which files it is pulling that from.

may i suggest you read the man grep, then ?

No offense, but the GUI admin tools aren’t always bulletproof.

no offense but you cant find information by yourself, you shouldnt leave GUIs. s/but/& if/

man network No manual entry for network

if you set it in /etc/hosts will that update /etc/sysconfig/network, like it does for /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default/hosts ? bif you set it in /etc/hosts will that update /etc/sysconfig/network, like it does for /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default/hosts ?/b

also read the initscripts package documentation.

Ahah, that is what happened. I couldn’t figure out why when I updated /etc/hosts my domain name showed up on the command line.

what do you mean? I think you have to restart (or maybe just restart networking) if you make a change before you see anything

Hi! How do I play an audio/x-gsm file? mplayer didn’t manage it…

By the time I had restarted I’d forgotten about the update to hosts.

So you edited /etc/hosts, restarted, and that updated /etc/sysconfig/network? I’m keen to know how it all ties together heh

While I’m being tedious, what would a normal bottleneck for device lo be with a fsb of 1066 and DDR2 800 ram? Is 100MiB/s slow or fast? No, I updated /etc/hosts restarted and then /etc/sysconfig/network still had localhost.localdomain but the command line said I was on the /etc/hosts name

thanks for the info… I would love to know what links /etc/hosts and /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default/hosts - as soon as you edit one the other is updated (on my system anyway)

this might help: ‘ls -ldi /etc/hosts /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default/hosts’

woah, he’s in both channels any idea how I can listen to it on Fedora then? untoast didn’t work, and I have gsm and gsm-tools installed

ah same inode

you just need to find an application that can be configured to decode the file. I’d look in ‘gsm-tools’ for example.

gsm-tools contains untoast, which doesn’t work

ah forgot, I thought hard links were ah…described in the permissions (for example symbolic link “l”)…

define “doesn’t work”

or rather, didn’t work for me. Just produced a binary that file/mplayer didn’t recognise before “data”, now “msg0000: ISO-8859 text, with very long lines, with no line terminators”

perhaps try ’sox’…

thats a different codec no? besides, gsm-tools should work…

but perhaps the ‘x-gsm’ file has not been decoded properly.

it has - I did it from a proper mail client this time

’sox’ is a sound format converter, and has a few codec libraries built in.

such as the same gsm lib

try ‘file …’ to see what it says.

on which? “data” on one and that string up there on the other

ssssh don’t reveal all the audio secrets at once. I’d trust more the one it says “data”.

hehe… do you know why its not decoding it to anything I can play?

suppose it decodes to a pure binary format without wrapper…

I’m off, thanks for the help, and thanks for clearing up /etc/hosts and /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default/hosts Blissex

the file that I get is “data”, when I untoast it, I get “ISO-8859 text, with very long lines, with no line terminators”

perhaps the input file format is not raw GSM 06.10?

anyway to tell? is there a magic number?

BTW this might help… http://kbs.cs.tu-berlin.de/~jutta/toast.html

its generated by asterisk…

but I suspect that your main problem is just decoding/encoding. if you run ‘untoast’, and it produces the file that seems text, does ‘untoast’ complain in any way?

nope, does it silently

so most likely it has been decoded right and likely it is now in raw audio format.

yeah, but mplayer can play basic stuff like that

Hello! I cannot write/format my FDD on Fedora 7. Isn’t it a bug of Fedora? I could on Knoppix 3.1.

“cannot” is no valid problem description.

toast/untoast is a raw audio codec without any header - I believe the compressed file format cannot be detected

ok, so you’re saying I need to re-encode it to something like mp3 or wav and I need to know what it is in order to encode it?

hi there

hiho!

When I unmount/sync FDD, it doesn’t end the writing.

“man toast” describes which audio formats are supported

And when I have a diskette formatted, my F7 doesn’t format it correctly.

if you don’t know what the input format is, the problem starts there

Advise me what more description I need.

mplayer can play that if you tell it whats in the file. check out ‘man toast’ the section “The following formats are supported:”

most likely the only kind of format detection would be to try decoding a .gsm file and see whether the decoder finds any invalid data A four bit magic number is prefixed to each 32 1/2-byte GSM frame mainly because 32 1/2-bytes are rather clumsy to handle. That’s all there is. 4-bit number = very ambiguous to implement with the “file” tool
