geo-rge i spent secure 5 years join money to have one laptop i dont use windows for more then one year i use debian

ahhh…. thats the problem…

i run gimp all the time

Yeah

vbox bug?

[your name] ALL=(ALL) AL” `

every time I do that it happens

and i run icewm

can I hide the error just because tis annoying

how do you clean these laptop screens

I don’t know, but this problem doesn’t happen under other WMs

without dmgin it

That’s not really a debian question

possibly

lol but im here im part of this community now :d

do you have only icewm-gnome, or do you also have icewm? there is a lib that doesn’t get pulled in by the -gnome one

what happened to visudo? :-|

apt-get install laptop-screen-utils

lol

http://helios.zombocube.com/debian.jpg

not sure if it would help, but i think it was something that sounded picturesque

Hmm.. click the link or not…

I think icewm-gnome-support is installed, but not used (just shows “IceWM 1.2.32″)); how can I check?

so…can I turn that error message off

lol

or at least hide it

grep over the kernel source and comment out the printk *g*

your joking me… Then I would have to recompile the kernel… if I ever even found the line ther ehas got to be a better way

it’s horribly fast and compact. and about gimp: you mean, this? http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/1975/200709211817211400×1050fn2.png

you could hide all the kernel messages. look at the commented kenrel.printk line in /etc/sysctl.conf

How can i make a shell script display the outputs of two commands on the same line?

nab jkigd

try apt-get install icewm icewm-gnome-support ..

uhm man klogd

umm… paste?

well, I figured that a one-liner would be more useful since his Vbox is spewing crap into his editors.

My keyboard was out of alignment, sorry

If i want “cat aa && cat bb” to display “aabb”

says both are already installed

oh well

geez. “gnome-support.”

how do you mean?

sure… but is that screenshot really icewm?

works here….

ok

I mean the command “paste”

should I deinstall gnome-support?

I uncommented that line jelly

geezus fucking kryst. google “icebuntu icewm”

omg

do I have to reboot for it to take effect

icebuntu? spare me

oh… I made my own theme which looks like MS Windows haha

hey, ubuntu is bloated, no doubt, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t pretty.

if you’re getting a low memory error, try making the cache smaller?

undesktop, SACRILIDGE I SAY!!!

hey i use stuff from the human icons

Interesting spelling

anyhow How do I get sudo working How do I add my account to the sudoers file ?

“low memory”? no, it’s just that IceWM doesn’t react anymore and eats up 100% CPU; but no swapping activity

edit /etc/sudoers properly and add yourself to the sudoers group

sacrilege?

then log out and back in

You know hat I meatn

maddash told you that a couple lines above

Ohh Lemme check

it’s that “su -c” thing.

that was 2 seperate sudoish things to do, not just one

no need for sudoers group

true

i do not understand how that fills my request…

hi

but i never bothered trying to figure out wtf i just add myself but nobody else

then log out and back in - hm, was that to me?

output of each command into each own output file, then paste them

if you’re the sudo dude

then not

how do i do that?

what is the name of the base kde package, the one without all the extras installed like open office

Ok, this channel is getting too messy for me now, good night -

i find reapplying the theme applies changes to icewm undesktop … i forget how to restart it properly, but the theme seems to do the job i prefer yamm but i made my own

some_file

nvm. figured out how i can do it another way

bash faq has all sorts of tips for shell scripts

hm, I didn’t get what you said about themes… it wasn’t related to the GIMP problem I think

!bash faq

bash faq is probably http://wooledge.org/mywiki/BashFaq

also, if you use X inside the wm you won’t see the console messages :-) vm*

I am making a wanted Poster but i cannot find a Western Writting font, where can i find such ?

Got a quick question, how do I update my whole system, I’ve been running apt-get update but that isn’t installing any updates or anything like that.

if i have X, how do i get my cmd interface open?

upgrade, not update

also, there’s this loglevel thing: you can supress console messages based on their “log level”, but I don’t know anything about that

apt-get upgrade or aptitude upgrade

is that etch or what, and have you ever apt-get dist-upgrade -ed yet? gimp+icewm work flawlessly for me on both lenny and sid, on 2 seperate boxes

Oh and what is dist-upgrade then?

start xterm?

you mean a tty? c+a+f{1-4}

I use debian unstable (always recent), and the problem persists for quite a while now uI use debian unstable (always recent), and the problem persists for quite a while now/u

why would you run unstable??

of course it’s possible that that this problem is due to my configuration, but then I don’t know why or what

once you go sid you can never go back

well, what would you run?

everything else sucks

Apache cant be installed via Debian 4.0 - http://rafb.net/p/5ioC8a35.html

s/sid/black/

it’s like you can never be a virgin again

literally. CAN NEVER GO BACK.

lol

I agree; going back to such old software is _boring_.

I’m running testing. it keeps me close to the edge, but doesn’t hurl me to the rock below. rocks*

It’s stable “enough.”

well you can change sources to testing and just wait… it works

some say the automatism in testing make it more “dangerous” than unstable

How can I find out what version of mod_perl I have installed on an etch server?

i put testing on the laptop but that was ‘just in case’ it’s old and well supported though non-nvidia

it’s just that if you have Debian Stable, you might not get new software so fast… which is silly if a new version solves bugs or some major drawbacks

backports.

oh well… why not use unstable in the first place? it’d be ok, if backports were more official often there isn’t even a backport etc.

because the rest of the packages in stable are actually more stable than sid.

that might be true… OTOH, how smooth are updates to new Debian releases if you already have installed dozens of backports?

I accidently rm’ed a folder containing all sorts of crap, from mp3’s to porn movies, that I’d like to retrive. Can someone suggest a program for undeleting my files?

depends on the filesystem you’re using. !undelete

it has been said that undelete is great with Midnight Commander (mc). Just unmount the fs and select “Undelete files” in mc, or doesn’t work for journalled filesystems.

sorry, ext3 and sorry for me it seems

see undeleting

safe delete has been disable so what is there to undelete?

see undeleting

okay, dondelelcaro

why shouldn’t undelete work with ext3?

it’s journalized

If i have a config file, and it says for example “A = B”, i only want do display the B? But if i change the B to an A, it will display the A instead.

because it’s a journaling filesystem and it’s not clear exactly where the inodes have gone; feel free to write one if you want.

ist “undernet” dead?

sure, but has the same on disk format as ext2

is that possible?

.bashrc && mkdir -p ${HOME}/.trash ‘

actually, you’re better off just prelinking libtrash s/prelink/preload/

haha, but that’s quite dirty

aw, geez, yet ANOTHER package?

should be in the kernel IMHO

it’s just a small library that overrides unlink

another gentoo issue?

I wanted something like that ages ago… but in this case it’s more then 200gigs… so that wouldn’t be ideal

hm. I just manned unlink. how’s rm different from unlink?

ok, so i’ve got a basic debain installation done, and i have 2 partitions on two seperate disks that i want mounted as 1 directory, /home/, can it be done ?

sure

kind of.

dpkg, gentoosmite maddash

unlink is the actual system call

jetscreamer, how ?

rm calls unlink man 2 unlink; for details

so what if I “alias rm=’unlink $@’ “?

!lvm

hmm… lvm is at http://www.sistina.com/products_lvm.htm, Logical Volume Manager for Linux, or ask me about lvm_tutorial, or extremely sexy. almost as sexy as Theo

IMHO the filesystem should preserve the most recently deleted files and only delete them “actually” if there’s no free space left for new files

I’m quite surprised that there isnt a “standard” app for handling this kind of situation

no such manpage

make it so. engage warp drive!

that’s the unlink command, *not* the unlink() system call in libc6.

!installit

*** NEWS FLASH! *** Your box does not come with every app, tool and utility known to debiankind installed already. If you find that the program you’ve been told to use isn’t there, install it. Also ask me about search. if someone suggests an application to you, it’s highly likely that it’s available via apt-get

gravity drive open a portal to hell

heh

except for allocating new blocks it’d be a trivial hack if you’re experienced, I guess

the library overrides the unlink (and unlinkat and rename and renameat) system calls so it works for everything, not just the command line.

neat

(it still doesn’t save you from truncating your files of course, but…)

maddash is one who believe that gentoo is the ultimative distro…

‘truncating’? it’d be just like windows, right?

you wasting your time

actually, I don’t

but if you delete files from a mountpoint unlike your home dir, it has to move files, I guess

hm

sure; I’m actually not sure where it sticks the files, having never bothered to use it myself

debian, plus a few healthy options to allow a recompile (THAT ACTUALLY WORK [*finger Julien Danjou*]) is the ultimate distro.) wooooooooo libtrash! messy alias, begone!

messy preload, come

messy period

Greets, everyone…

770 other people say “hello contrast83!”

I’ve got a binary, a .desktop file and an icon for a program which I want to put into a checkinstall package. Could someone point me in the direction where I could find out how to set up a makefile that’ll allow me to do this?

usually an undelete feature is a per-filesystem entity.. I.e. each filesystem mounted has its own undelete settings.. percentage of FS to use, location on fs to keep files.. etc though like dondelelcaro, I’ve never used this particular one

hi all. for the past few months I’ve been getting sporadic kernel panics that freeze the server. they are completely random and one moment all is fine and the next it’s frozen. how can I figure out what’s going on?

mem test may not be the cause, but its a good starting point

3 /bin/su.. With the ’s’

troubled, i typed mem test and it said mem is not a known command

/msg dpkg permissions

heh !memtest

[memtest] http://www.memtest.org/ . Also check out http://rick.vanrein.org/linux/badram/, or check out the packages memtest86 and memtest86+, or “aptitude install memtest86+” and read /usr/share/doc/memtest86+, or for cpu temperature testing use the cpuburn package

k

!tell Bbit about root

that sounds a bit threatening… “cpuburn”

how would I go about using dual core?

buy a dual core cpu ?

I have one I intend to fit

so do it

it should “just work”

i killed a machine with it

all latest debian kernels are smp enabled !smp

well, smp is (Symmetric Multi Processing) This refers to a technology where a computer uses multiple processors to process different instructions at the same time, in separate processing units. It is a form of parallel computing. or Single Member Plurality, which is the Canadian electoral system., or rtfm! http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/SMP-HOWTO.html, or the right option for Hyperthreaded Pentium 4’s, or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symmetric_multiprocessing

at least for a recent version of the kernel

etch kernels are SMP

2.6.18-4 or 5 is in etch and yes it is smp enabled

were all sarge kernels smp?

not sure

no

I know there was a large amount of overhead related to SMP at one point

so as soon as I drop in my x2 tomorrow debian will realise it has two cores to play with?

yes

well, it should

good enough for me thanks abrotman!

How can I make adobe flash player for linux use a different sound card?

i think it uses the alsa oss wrapper you have to select your soundcard through alsa i think

probably the asound.rc just a guess

where would I find asound.rc

probably have to make it .. read the man page ..and i’m just guessing .. might want to get a better answer from #alsa

wine has crashed running some windows program which is fine, how do i kill the process as the terminal window has not returned control to me

pkill wine?

hit ctrl-c maybe ?

tried that pkill works thanks

uhm ok

are there any caveats with which kernel-header is symlinked at the time building a kernel and updating an initramfs or initrd image ??

!tell Bluebit about root you can’t speak in here as root .. stop tryinh

how effing cool is that ! aptget wine then run wine with some program and it works i mean its just amazing

isn’t it just

its like in windows you are made to feel alienated from the whole thing but with linux you are part of it all

it took me two years to install wine, and i have yet to use it

but then it crashes and you can’t get your terminal back ?

yes but thats because im just fucking about with the win window and the program the fact that it can run flashfxp connect and download with it i know i keep going on about it but its fun fun all the way if your a nerd like me that is !tell sine about root

!tell sine about selftell

troubled, would it be possible that a bad portion of the hard disk is causing the kernel panics?

lol i was just testing

the reason i ask is i just went into single user mode and remounted each drive ro and ran fsck

uhm, with vmware server, can I move the guest to another instance of vmware on another machine?

when i got to the third drive in the middle of fsck running, i got the kernel panic

ask #vmware bad hardware makes anything possible

abrotman, I did, no one home

then wait for them to answre

what’s a “guest”

hey where is the ‘any’ key

but it’s definitely possible to move a virtual system from one machine to another… it must be, as there exist ready-made debian etc. systems i.e. complete virtual disks for vmware

dude

CutMeOwnThroat, exactly. I think its a case of finding what to google for

vmplayer + debian

where can i get a little debian sticker like the one on my laptop for vista bwhere can i get a little debian sticker like the one on my laptop for vista/b

cafepress maybe ?

If the VM is shut down or paused, yes, you can move it

why does the harddrive in my laptop make a little click every 2 seconds

There’s an add-on for VMware ESX Server (the expensive high-end one) that allows live migration, i.e. while the VM is running and actively doing stuff

crunch click ok im being stupid now think its time for bed

Wyzard, ah nay, live migration not needed.

good night all

Keep in mind that VMware doesn’t virtualize the processor, so if you move to a machine with a different type of processor (i.e. Intel vs. AMD) you should make sure that you’re not using software that depends on the old processor type That’s especially true if the VM is paused, since running apps might have checked the processor type and selected processor-specific optimized code to use

hi, having trouble with java/iceweasel. followed instructions at java.com and the firefox(iceweasel) plugins site. after install, there is no ‘missing plugins’ message, but no java functionality

Wyzard, no its the same computer, just want to be able to move between 64bit and 32bit base os and still be able to float windows on the top

`sun-java*-plugin`

Use the Debian packages, not Sun’s installer script

you need to add contrib non-free and type aptitude install sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin

oh, i thought the deb package was out of date

That’s fine (assuming you’re not running 64-bit Windows and moving to a 32-bit processor, of course)

I don’t know which depends on which, but those 3 should be all you need to have JAVA applets etc

Wyzard, nah, do you know what files do I need to move?

I’ve got a binary, a .desktop file and an icon for a program which I want to put into a checkinstall package. Could someone point me in the direction where I could find out how to set up a makefile that’ll allow me to do this?

if you are on amd64 forget about java browser plugin. none exist, either run a 32bit chroot or use ia32libs

the whole directory containing the virtual machine (i.e. subdirectory of ~/vmware, if you keep your VMs in the default place)

so ‘deb http://……………/ etch main non free ?

!non-free

methinks non-free is a component which contains software that does not comply with the DFSG. To add non-free packages to your packages index, ask me about non-free sources. To see which non-free packages are installed on your system, ask me about vrms. For the Non-free tracking system, see http://nonfree.alioth.debian.org/

no

goddamit

p4

Wyzard, okay, Ill try :-) thanks

looks like etch has Java 5 but not Java 6… if you need Java 6, there’s probably a backport of it at backports.org

deb http://…/ etch main contrib non-free

but most things don’t depend on Java 6

iceweasel included?

yes whats with the M

iceweasel doesn’t depend on java anything… it just loads whatever plugin you install The sun-java5-plugin should work fine testing/unstable has Java 6 btw

Wzard

Most IRC clients have tab completion… you can probably just type “wytab”

new enough to debian/linux, no windows to fall back, keeping it simple!

bblrb

what?

sound

sound?

.. doesn’t work

really?

wytab nope .. nothing

bah, you know what I mean

hehe

Wyzard: works.

hey

hmm, the GNOME icons seem to have changed recently… the lock overlay for read-only files looks different now

did .20 start trickling into sid ?

yeah The Clearlooks theme got updated too

What is testing like?

I’m not sure if I like the new gradient on the tabs, but it’s not too bad Newer stuff, but it breaks occasionally and there are no timely security updates like stable gets

so best not to touch with a barge pole

yeh. all svg IIRC now, and they re-did them

not unless you know wha tyou’re doing

ahh ok

hmm, the audio icon has changed too… now it’s a big eighth note not bad

why are the images created with mkinitramfs smaller than mkinitrd ?

probably doesn’t include as many unnecessary modules… but mkinitrd is obsolete anyway, and doesn’t work with recent kernels

yes i notice exactly that

It depends on devfs, and that was removed from the kernel in (IIRC) .12 or so

but somehow default is set to mkinitrd i see

Where do you see that?

when i install a new kernel it starts mkinitrd… not mkinitramfs

hmm It should be running mkinitramfs-kpkg It does a sort of autodetection for kernel versions that’s supposed to choose the right tool but it’d be a good idea to just uninstall mkinitrd if you still have it, since it’s useless now

ok you mean mkinitrd is just good for 2.2 and 2.4 kernels ?

and early 2.6 kernels

early as 2.6.18 ?

and probably not 2.2 kernels — I don’t think those supported initrds at all

ah ok

2.6.18 won’t work with mkinitrd

so i can safely remove mkinitrd then…

If you’re running etch, yes

i don’t run anything older than etch

As for why it’s running mkinitrd in the first place, make sure you don’t have it configured to do so in /etc/kernel-img.conf — I think it’s possible to set an option in that file which overrides the normal version detection

mkimage variable yes i read on that but i didn’t set it to anythin else

dunno then

and how about the kernel-headers that ly around in /usr/src ? will it be auto determined to which it gets linked to building a kernel or do i have to have the right one symlinked ? at build time ? or symlink always the latest ? err

/lib/modules/${version}/build is a symlink to the appropriate headers directory for that version It’s provided by the linux-headers packages

oh so i don’t have to set it manually

tools that build modules will look for that by default /usr/src/linux isn’t used, and doesn’t need to even exist (though some things will try /usr/src/linux as a fallback if the build symlink is missing)

if ctype.h is not found, what debian package would I install?

libc6 ?

there isn’t a “global” symlink for the latest one, it doesn’t have sens libc6-dev

ah thanks!

libc6-dev, build-essential is a metapackage that includes that plus some other useful stuff

!tell schemelab about search

something-dev

Install build-essential on any machine where you want to compile stuff

cool. new Debian would pull me through

Library packages don’t contain headers, their corresponding -dev packages do

knew ?

hi. problems with contrib / non-free. sources.list includes deb http://ftp.ie.debian.org/debian/ etch main contrib non-free, but getting stat (no such…)

yes s/new/knew

sorry

and any system that doesn’t have libc6 installed already has much bigger problems than a lack of ctype.h :-) uand any system that doesn’t have libc6 installed already has much bigger problems than a lack of ctype.h :-)/u

lol

and you can’t figure out which package you need ?

if i’m running a dns server and my external firewall on the same machine. will an incoming request go through the dns server before teh firewall? or the firewall before the dns server?

generally the toolchain as maintained by debian is very stable even on the unstable debian… otherwise what would they compile with?

Maybe that mirror doesn’t carry contrib and non-free… some don’t

apt-get update && aptitude update

oh, nm, I see what error you mean — abrotman is right

getting no results with sun-java*-bin. looking at using fakeroot and java-package, but can’t currentlyy get them either… i’ll update apt repos

apt-cache search jre

You always have to update after adding sources — that’s what downloads the new list of available packages

now you’re playing with scheme?

vlc is not in testing for the reasons listed in http://bjorn.haxx.se/debian/testing.pl?package=vlc

you should be able to apt-get install debootstrap

I really like xfce

hi, how can I run baculas configuration script that runs after installing the mydwl version? at the time I did not have mysql running and after it was ther and I tried reinstalling, the configuration script for debian did not run :s

can anyone recommend a lightweight torrent client for debian? it has to have a gui though

bitornado? dunno if its 2 ts or not

mas187, Aren’t those two requirements mutually exclusive?

lightweight but gooey

Can a wrong X configuration damage a modern LCD-screen ?

garo, I would doubt it.

probably couldn’t set it on fire…

garo, Unless of course it made the user so enraged that he punched it. ugaro, Unless of course it made the user so enraged that he punched it./u

/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward’ my ppp links starts failing every 30 seconds and needs to reconnect (for that period internal computers can route data to the outside and receive data back). I can’t figure out how to keep the ppp connection from failing.

Any ideas?

/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward’ my ppp connection becomes stable again

just as a site point… there are debian packages that handle those things for at least a few applications for you

ipmasq is a decent one

like a masq router, is as easy as configure your interfaces and install the package abrotman said it’ll also do things like recalculate itself on certain events which is needed for example when your isp’s dhcp server decides to hand yuou a new IP

geo-rge: that sounds helpful, but somewhere isn’t it going to enable forwarding (similar to how I have above) and I’m going to start getting the disconnects again?

well not sure about this part… but maybe you don’t need any of that? I wasn’t quite sure what you were trying to accomplish

geo-rge: when I do that hosts connected to my ethernet card are able to connect to the outside world (however brief)

so

but if ipmasq will make it easy to set up a more robust router I’ll check it out

you have two eth cards?

yeah I have ppp0 (outside world via evdo) and eth0 (internal)

and one is for inside and the other for outside?

right

which interface is routed thru for outside connections? or, which one has the default route thru a gateway

ppp0

ok, so I guess you would install ipmasq

I’ll give that a try thanks

and tell it ppp0 is the outside interface (but it should figure it out )

I see it even has empty rules for when pppd bring the link up

holy god he’s dumb

calling god dumb is blasphemy…

goddumbit! oh wait that’s bush’s job

I’m newbie. Have a script that validates if field has alpha charachters entered (e.g. [a-zA-Z]) I need to change it so that it validates number range 6-12. I tried [6-12] but that didn’t work. Any suggestions?

tried #bash ?

oh sorry. I thought I was in java.

the version lastest of testing version debian is 2.6.21-8?

uhm .. nope that’s the latest kernel in testing

so, it’s ok.

though i only have -6

ok because in a chat somebody tell me that he has the 2.6.21-5 and this version of his distri is more new than in debian testing.

What distro was he referring to? and keep in mind that testing changes regularly

wodim: OPC failed.

a distri based on debian its nameis gnulinex (www.linex.org), yes i know and today testing is 2.6.21.8 more than 2.6.21-8

2.6.21-8 is not the same thing as 2.6.21.8

different numbering scheme

sorry, i mean 2.6.21-5

maybe the -8 there doesn’t mean the same as the -8 in debian

honestly .. it’s not worth arguing about

if it’s based on debian then the -number means “how many times a new version uploaded”

not quite but it’s still not worth arguing about

close enought tho to make the point

in this case, yes. i know it

in many cases of “debian” versus “something else based on debian” it could be they are the same kernels, IF the kernels are taken directly from debian to be included in whatever dist this is

ok

but that’s probably an unusual case… if it is the case, that would make it easier

Anyone know if that’s a HW error or wodim config error (above)

not quite… the -8 is the ABI revision; it only changes when an update is made that breaks compatibility with compiled modules oops, geo-rge ^^^

hello only a question

that’s not one

where can i download pngtousplash from?

/msg dpkg ask

???

from the internets

A search on package contents on http://packages.debian.org/ doesn’t turn up any packages containing a file called “pngtosplash”

i’m not sure why you’re telling me this

oops

yes, thats right

Maybe it isn’t packaged sorry, I’m tired and a bit sick today :-)

but i cant the source bye

please don’t apologise. I think you’re still about 1,000 mistabs agead of me err, behind me anyway, i’, probably still drunk from last night did you gooooogle ?

yes of course i will try again

you must wear the goggle like conan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDgn4CjJCO4 you must watch this to be able to appreciate the goggles then you too can goggle

i found nothing in google

Searching Google for “pngtosplash” yields a suggestion for “pngtousplash”, which seems to be the actual name of the program

why do non root users need to do /sbin/ifconfig but root can just use ifconfig?

and packages.debian.org says that pngtousplash is not in etch, but it’s in the libusplash-dev package in testing/unstable

/sbin is not in the path of normal users

ohhhhhh ok thanks Wyzard

i just did a fresh net install on a inspiron 1100 (which has had no problem before during many debian installs) with a netgear pcmcia wifi card. during install device was recognized and used to preform the net install, however upon first boot,

possible is you had swap space activated on a faulty drive yes since swap = ram. disable swap and try again

system hangs due to a kernel panic while init the hostap driver for the netgear card. i’m assuming this is due to the newer kernel version (since i haven’t installed a linux distro on this machine since the previous version was published. any ideas?

did you find its source?

You mean the source code? That’d probably be in one of the results in the Google search, but I didn’t look at those results I just went straight to packages.debian.org when I found that the program is really called “pngtousplash”

how can i easily manage multiple xterm windows, i guess screen i still have issue i have to type around 3 keys to job to the another window

you could use an alternate terminal program which supports tabs, rather than xterm

i’ll search again

Wyzard, thos need 3 keys to chnage the window ..actually you have to scroll to get to the windows .. i use around 20+ windows

to switch

wols gnome-terminal need lots of resource

You’d open multiple tabs in each window rather than lots of windows

Wyzard, yes when windows increase its use lots of memory and cpu .. and make the labtop slow .. but xterm + screen consume less memory .. but the problem i need 4 keys to swith windows

Opening additional terminal windows shouldn’t consume significant amounts of additional memory… it’s not like you’re loading another whole copy of the program into RAM and having a terminal window open won’t eat up your CPU

Wyzard, gnome-terminal is heavy on resource

not even having lots of them open sure, because it uses a bunch of libraries, but it’s a big up-front cost and then small cost for each additional window/tab and I’m sure there are other tabbable terminals besides gnome-terminal

konsole is one

Wyzard, beside i use xfce .. but i don’ t have gnome applications too

XFCE’s terminal is tabbable

xfce4-terminal for one, also not so light; mrxvt is lighter

Looks like it was HW issue. Wiped off lens, burning now.

xfce4’s lets you have the tabs at the side, which I like; I don’t know about others

and that won’t take up much memory when you launch it because the libraries it uses are already in memory (used by the other parts of XFCE) and don’t need to be loaded again band that won’t take up much memory when you launch it because the libraries it uses are already in memory (used by the other parts of XFCE) and don’t need to be loaded again/b

Wyzard, hmmm

Ctrl-Shift-T to open a tab; Ctrl-PgUp/PgDown to switch between them

Wyzard, hmmm thanks lot let me see ..how it goes

You can name the tabs too — “Set Title” on the Terminal menu

Wyzard, hmmm

Ctrl-Shift-N for a new window, btw

wyard i like the screen .. but

i’m sorry i have one debian etch instalation but like make one upgrade to thesid using the deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib and now i reboot i dont have image in gnome afterlogin and thedirver is the vesalooks ok itwaorks beford and fine :x

The default 12pt size is too big IMO; I shrink it to 10pt

What’s the /proc interface to the kernel ring buffer?

Wyzard, oh cool … looks like its good i will use it and see how it goes thanks for the suggestion

Doh! /proc/kmsg

urggg maby is bether i give up linux

In Soviet Russia, Linux gives up YOU!

if you want unstable… it becomes you and your responsibility to know how to find problems, search for solutions and for the software to install…

in soviet russia, russian reversal joke make you

unstable changes. a lot. how will people know what is now?

karsten right … you just dont know what you are say i think

magic_pinguim, YOU will have to find out. yourself. maybe to solve, you will have to debug a C or C++ program. or the kernel.

geo-rge well im tryfor allmost 2 mouths put the wireless here :x i know thre are software that makes t works fine have drivers and everything … just dont work… is to stupid

I’m just saying, you might not want unstable.

geo-rge yes buti need need kernel … and the new drivers aplicaiton thtadont come whith kernel that stable use … dont works on debian

ok, so maybe you can try newer kernel packages

well, you could debug the kernel

geo-rge i just spent allmost 2mouths try it

or just go back to the previous kernel version?

no sense put unstable in one desktop productions right? lol

I’m not doing wireless

hm… is it time to say !wud? Or would that be impolite?

that, and you are expected to understand things deeply

try ubuntu

hehe

I’m trying to guess what the right hsync and vsync are for my monitor. If I use a higher resolution, should the hsync be lower or higher?

struct they dont care about security … i reallydont like see one recomeneded firewall … in last ubuntu version … whith onebug not yet corrected ….

ubuntu is probably as secure as debian is

for a learning experience maybe security is not so important

and its better for people new to linux so then you learn some stuff and maybe you dont say things like maybe it is better if a I give up on linux then you come back to debian later and find it not so frustrating

“Better” is a relative thing. I’m giving Debian to a bunch of undergrad kids. Of course, I’m also their sysadmin, so perhaps my vision is skewed. Btw, Linux Mint seems like it could get some mindshare, if it consistently works as well as I’ve seen it work setting up all the non-free stuff.

struct sowhy they have one firewall security bug that everyone knows … that the firewall dont run after reboot … and they dont correct it? one firewall they recomended in the distor beford? no nono forget … that one big mistake …

sometimes certain hardware doesn’t work on linux kernel (which is exclusively where hardware is dealt with)

dont give me tryst tryst urgg :x “trust”

its better then using windows or mac osx if you like you can read the debian documentation

geo-rge man one firewall dont run ate the computer reboot? only run manually? you joking you call this security?

it will teach you much about debian and then you will feel more comfortable with it

where can I find this documentation?

http://www.debian.org/doc/

I’m using debian since 4 years but never noticed any documentation

not my problem

What documentation? /usr/share/doc ?

no, you DID need documentation, you just didn’t REALISE ir t

I wrote “noticed” not “needed”

struct why i want linux ifi cant have wireless (know thta have drivers that work well in the last stable kernel?) and they notrunning …

ok so dont use linux host then

and /usr/share usually only contains debian changelogs/readmes and docs from the vendor

hello all. anyone knows a good application to monitor multiple cores cpus? Should I use apt-get intall what?

go back to whatever you were using before

(1) I didn’t say that (I think) (2) you need to make very clear what you are saying

+/doc

maybe linux is not for you

struct that what im talking about

monitor them for what ?

is it always like this in here now?

no .. just with people that can’t speak english

hehe

atop is nice

abrotman, cpu usage and that kind of stuff

linux is ONLY FOR WIRELESS. NO video. NO sound. NO compiling anything. the ONLY thing it can do is wireless.

X seems to be able to probe my monitor for hsync settings, or at least something like this seems visible in /var/log/Xorg.1.log, but I can’t interpret these numbers.

abrotman, atop is an X app?

no

that sound right to you?

I have not use atop in some time

hello

struct tostupid have drivers that works for linux … and have so many time to install it and they dont work in on stable version

I ought to try it on my mini-itx system

758 people say hello to suwro

struct i dont need thatin windows … jst a few minutes

is there any method to make iptables list without the headers? (target prot opt source…) ??

Try Linux Mint if you don’t care about freedom.

you do have the choice to use windows… but you pay for that, and you pay with money, and you pay with your rights and your freedoms

And leave us the hell alone.

how is life? doing well?

??

as well as can be expected i suppose

Hm, ok. I seem to have found something useful.

nobody use iptables in scripts?

maybe ask #iptables ?

umm - good point!

JordiGH so give to me one solution

So I need to take the modelines that X probed and then use these magic modeline numbers to define the hsync in xorg.conf, right?

JordiGH or you dont have solution? JordiGH or you still dont know put this like i dont know put it …

what?

and you just talking around there … bla bla bla

one of the main points of using linux in general is you have the ability to find your own solutions

are you on drugs?

Your solution is wireless isn’t working? 1) If you care about freedom, nag the wireless manufacturers to release free drivers 2) if you don’t care, install a distro that doesn’t care about freedom either such as Linux Mint. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XFree86_Modeline

Nyle nope … just aswaser about someone that talk to me i dont care about freddom because i like opensource but i cant spent so many time or haveing machines stoped because i have drivers but they dont install … LOL so we have and we cant use they LOL stupid

so don’t use debian whats the argument?

did you look for evidence that your wireless card can run under linux?

Yes, it’s stupid. But it’s not our fault. It’s the manufacturers’ fault.

BEFORE YOU BOUGHT IT?

eff you see kay off

awe dude.. weak.

i thought it was strong

nyle … i just say … only this —- maby linux it is not for me im tired to try to install this that i dont know why im losing so many time”

maybe you’re right

0 apache2 -k start, what does the S! stand

if you’re not willing to do the hard work maybe linux is -not- for you

orinoco is nice

now that makes all this a litle stupid oh yes it makes have the drivers and they dont work in stable lolso you cantuse they …

then go use something else man ps

OR if you’re going to let your mind fizzle and fry every time something bad happens… maybe linux is -not- for you

“unexpected IRQ trap at vector 50 hostap_cs: index 0×01: , irq 3, blah blah prism2_hw_init: initialized in 0 ms” when my pcmcia wifi card is inserted and the system freezes on boot. if the card isn’t in system starts fine. anyone have any ideas?

i’m having a problem with one of my apache2 servers, one of them, the working one has just an S, this one has a S1

in all the time you’ve been here during this conversation, what progress have you made in trying to find and solve the problem?

i’m wondering if this could have anything to do with the problem

S? S1?

geo-rge: just leave him be its a waste of time time is very valuable

geo-rge well just thinking … thetime i spent to see that will not work and i dont want to use ubuntu … so i need to think to start to use things that probably work like othersos

but you can see he wants it to work, right?

okay .. so he’s been whining for what .. 30 minutes .. does anyone even know which chipset he has ?

just kick him and be done with it

Try Linux Mint. http://linuxmint.com/

geo-rge i spent 5 years join money to have one laptop i dont use windows for … more then one year … i use debian … i have one new toy for 2 mouths … and the machine is stoped … understand now? i allreayd try help here and nobody can help me beford to that ok no problem it happens i like debian to but itdont works what can i do?

how old are you?

what if linux mint’s firewall fails after a reboot :O

try a distro that doesn’t care about freedom I suggest Ubuntu…

so .. right .. no one knows his chipset ?

nope

argh.

I added an unstable repository to my sources.list, now how can I apt-get install just one program? It prompts me to accept 200 MB worth of upgrades for dozens of other programs.

I dont know what chipset he has I dont care really either

you can’t

calm down. more than likely you will be able to find a solution to your problem somehow. Just relax and tackle the problem in a little while. Go relax yoru mind, smoke a cig, jerk off, watch porn whatever it is that you need to do

Oh, wow.

wireless must die

it will e alright

!tell null__ about simple sid backport

now that was weak

he hasn’t been the slightest bit specific yet about his situation

no

so basically .. trolling ?

spelling out shit like fuck is lame

Nyle does have a point, he needs to chill out

you? talking about calm? we all know your a loose end waiting to snap

if you say so

hehe

why? it works fine here

paalease, your the most unstable pothead in this channel stoned

vsyncs are in kHz and hsyncs in Hz, right?

it doesn’t matter .. he doesn’t want to discuss his issue .. he just wants to whine/bitch

and we all know you can’t spell “you’re”

right … or just give up and use things that work

then DO IT

no, been messing that up for going on 5 years now

I can’t deal with this shit…

like I said… either you’re willing to do the hard work or you’re not

its the ones who vent that are normal the quiet ones are the ones that snap

personal attacks are fairly useless. I mean, you are just some dude online, and I should care about your opinion why exactly?

ok whatever …. that ok guys

Can someone explain to me why it makes sense for it to require downloading 200 MB of updates just to install one program?

dependencies

“serenity now”

check the hardware for linux compatability next time before you buy it hehe serenity now, insanity later

hehe

That does make sense.

Nyle i say many times there are drivers thta works for everything here … even the webcam

could it be you’re downloading something from a -different- dist?

I am much to quiet

too

l

take up hunting?

Nope, just a -um- I think updated version of vlc. How can I find out what version# apt-get will download and install?

ah .. no !tell null__ about backports

apt-get policy pskage name err apt-cache

fighting wild animals would be a good way to vent shark wrestling

or die while screaming

we could start a reality show about shark wrestling

in a linux router/dns/dhcp server, how do i set the private ip i want to give the router?

the thing is, that trying to get binary packages from a dist that is not the same will require support for those binaries… you’re better off compiling it

starring gentoo users ?

we could film it in the bahamas I got the set up all ready yeah sure gentoo users is fine

I think I will compile it.

we just tell them we are going to film them swimming in HD

okay .. ignore what i say ..

nevermind the red stuff in the water its just to add a nice tint to the water

use troubled slackware users as chum?

heh

build-dep also wants to get 200 MB of stuffz. So… :p

that might be a crime

so you’ll need the dev libs and other such to support the compiling

did you check backports.org ?

gentoo users ought to be able to swim rather fast though

like… compiler?

bah .. no vlc there iether

if they use the right compile flags

or slower if they make a mistake

yeah

telnet 192.168.0.14 80, when i type in GET, it gets my the page, but i cannot access the webpage when i type 192.168.0.14

not sure the .00001 nano seconds speed advantage would help them though

I am right now one with the universe totally zen

what happens ?

how did that happen?

no pot, fasting, praying etc.

nothing

I went to a hot dog stand… he made me one with everything…

lynx 192.168.0.14 does what?

geo-rge: i hate you

no pot?

lol

try another browser

ah you mean herbs?

indeed i do

doesn’t work on ie nor firefox

ganja?

lynx 192.168.0.14 does what?

at least you respond quickly

I wonder where the term pot came from

that i do

it never made sense to me

ask wikipedia

i like potusa good band

who do you pray to?

the browser just sits there for about a minute and then times out

maybe you should just msg him ?

the geo-rge god!

The One True God The Mighty Leaf.

he prays to Shred0r, the God of Shred

listening on port 80 but nothing comes through?

ah hey hows it going?

that I do

To format a simple fat32 file system, I just run mkfs.vfat /the/device?

it’s going. yep.

shred on any instrument is awesome

Ok, thanks

i don’t know, i can telnet into it, it’s baffling the he@@ out of me

be it ravi shankar on sitar, or batio on guitar

lynx 192.168.0.14 does the same thing

what do apache logs say? does netstat show any of this?

HTTP request sent; waitning for response logs just say apache2 is resuming normal operations

firewall rules?

none accept everything

you are doing all this on the same host as the apache2 is installed on?

no i’m ssh’d into it

lynx localhost ?

lynx localhost show anything in your ssh session? lynx 127.0.0.1 show anything in your ssh session?

hang on, i have to install lynx on the webserver

localhost and 127.0.0.1 are supposed to be the same thing in most cases

yes, it shows IT WORKS!!!

maybe links or w3m was on there already?

is there a firewall involved ?

router or firewall rules or null route of conflicting MAC or other causing an issue?

well i have a smoothwall for internet connection sharing but i’m trying to access the webserver from the internal lan

but using your smoothwall as the router? check your smoothwall logs

yes, but the webserver didn’t work before i put it in, i’ve only had it for a couple days how owuld i find out if there is a duplicate mac

if your workstation has no firewall than it must be a firewall or routes on the webserver

i have everything set to accept, there are no reules

check your routes and IPs on web server as well and firewall check your routes and IPs and firewall on your workstation

i’m using an xp workstation

clear browser cache and restart browser

good point, lame browser cache issue was quite common and likely still is

nothing

hold down control button and click reload ?

nothign

what does your webserver logs say?

what i can’t figure out is i can access it from a remote client via telnet log says absolutely nothing, accept when i telnet, or just now when i used linx on the server

proxy? cache? squid?

i’m bypassing squid, when i enable it it says, 0 sized return 8 2007] [debug] worker.c(1740): AcceptMutex: sysvsem (default: this just popped out

OH NO .. A MUTEX!

what’s that mean?

danger

sorry .. it’s late

what can i do?

troubleshoot and fix it

nothing in your error/access logs at all?

i’ve been trying

what about using netstat ?

where’s the “static-routes” file in debian?

for every connection i initiate, a line is added that never goes away

that says what ?

684

your firewall is not right … on one of the systems

814 well it has to be on the server because no cleint works

can you shut down the firewall without issue ?

ye s

why is tcp6 showing an IPv4 address?

i dunno there is something f’d up

it’s supposed to

pardon my ignorance, I have avoided IPv6

or rather .. that’s normal looking

would the webservers route have anything to do with it? never mind when i ping 192.168.0.14, which is the local host, it ways unknown host but ping localhost works

127.0.0.1 is localhost 192.168.0.14 is supposed to be on one of the NICs

yes

netmask? routes?

when you ping by number, it says unknown host?

yes

check the address

routes are good

that’s not supposed to happen the -address-

i get that

ifconfig -a eth0 ?

the thing you’re -pinging-

ping 192.168.0.14 is the exact command i’m tying unknown host l92.168.0.14

ok try making the first char a ONE not an ELL

ifconfig -a check your interface config /etc/hosts /etc/resolv.conf …

ifconfig is fine

notice the first char of the address is an L not a 1

no its not

hi, im just installing vmware server but the script has hit an error. It is looking for an IP adress of the host on my private network.

look at the message that came back. I am.

/usr/bin/vmware-ping: not found

/etc/host has an entry: 192.168.0.14 poplarswitchboard and that works fine

try pinging again, and this time put the right char in

geo-rge: i tried not with my number pad AND the normal numbers same thing unknown host l92.168.0.14 it seems when i paste it in here it looks different

look at the first char, and the fifth char

when i ping poplarswitchboard, it replys fine

it says L92.168.0.14 where the L is lowercase in the actual message this would explain why it would say “unknown host”, a message produces ONLY for domain NAMES produced that is

how can i generate a random password from command line?

pwgen

sorry, i see it now, i can ping it fine excuse me

np… resistance really is futile

but i’m no closer to a solution………………

if all else fails, you can backport from lenny or sid

i cant understant wtf the server would just quit, and not work anymore now im wondering if my ethernet card isn’t balled

http://tovid.wikia.com/wiki/Installing_tovid/Debian any reason why selecting ‘unstable’ or ’sid’ brings a 404

delete em! delete em!

that was meant for someone a while ago hehe

geo-rge: wouldn’t you think the log would show it requesting it though ?

word

yes but he says he can telnet to port 80

i want to convert a server from linux to windows… it as a marvel 6081 SATA controller… anybody have experience with mv_sata vs. sata_mv - neither worked for me a couple of years ago when i tried this the first time.

and does the log show that request ?

i love grinding drums and brutally sick death metal with insane shredz0rz muuaha

yes when i telnet, otherwise no

try this:

why?

it doesn’t

lynx http://192.168.0.12/

from which host ?

windows

linux (had it backwards…)

oh ok

well again why?

hi.. after some help installing etch onto promise TX2000 controller in RAID 1 (done it too long ago for RH9, can’t remember)

I know the reasons I would… but what are yours?

geo-rge: from which host?

i find it’s easier to manage linux servers, and there’s less overhead for the os.

from 192.168.0. NOT 12

ok, same thing

yeah, you should consider switching then so you can telnet 192.168.0.12 80

geo-rge: i tried to build this as a linux box the first time around, but there was no support for the sata controller… i wonder if it’s better now.

from the NOT.12?

yes, but the host is .14, not .12

ok .14 has the web server on it? or .12?

but yes i can telnet into the machine from a remote host via telnet, when i type GET, i get the webpage data .14 is the webserver

ohh then, from .12,

So what is it with the console not being able to use the so-called ‘line drawing’ characters? Something change in the linux termtype or ncurses or … ?

i’m trying to connect from .1 and .30 .1 is another debian machine

lynx http://192.168.0.14/

.30 is a xp machine on, i tried that from .1 nothing

you tried that EXACT line? (remember, we recently experienced resistance to verifying things are correct… so much so that I’d entertain the idea of having you pay me…) can you ping .14 from .1?

ok, u fix this problem i pay u .1 says:

dpkg –get-selections shows linux-image-2.6.18-4-686 install and linux-image-2.6.18-5-686 install. Can I safely remove linux-image-2.6.18-4-686 ?

it’s your insecure backup kernel .. but yes

HTTP request sent; waiting for headers, Alert!: Unexpected network read error; connection aborted

So what is it with the console not being able to use the so-called ‘line drawing’ characters? Something change in the linux termtype or ncurses or … any suggestions?

ncurses

all right thanks

cant access http://192.168.0.14/ Unables to access document

hmm, ok, from the same machine (.1?)

did he shut off the firewall yet?

can you do ping 192.168.0.14 no idea where is it located

yes, no firewall on remember the telent telnet

I wonder if the problem is not with the lynx binary if the telnet worked, lynx on the same machine should have worked

well, firefox does this, ei does this, lynx does this………

when you do it from .1?

well firefox and ie fail from .30

ok, as root on .14

can he make it work from the server if he uses the server IP ?

look at the output of iptables -L

yes abrotma n input, policy accept output policy accept forward policy accept nothing else

so it’s empty

yes

that’s good… is the same true on .1?

.1 is my firewall

I get that hence the .1 which means it’s probably not empty…

ok, would it be better if i tried on a different debian machine

by what means is .1’s firewall rules set up?

smoothwall

is it a debian machine?

its build on debian, yes

why not try ipmasq instead?

but i don’t know if you can call it a “debian machine”

what’s different?

well it’s just a very bare installation

oh, ok… how is smoothwall present? from a package?

well, i used a different debian machine to build the iso

this iso was for installing debian?

no just smoothwall, but like a said earlier, the webserver didn’t work before i put in the smoothwall ok i have a different debian box here 192.168.0.4

and its iptables -L?

same all accept, empt y

ok, try pinging .14

oh forward is dropped

so it’s different?

ok, i set it to accept

hmm, I’m still a bit skeptical… but let’s try. ping 192.168.0.14 responses?

ok, i can fine

not able to read that response.

time=0.312 ms

ok, so it does ping. telnet 192.168.0.4 80

works fine

does this machine (.4) have a gui?

i can get it if i have to hang on

well let’s ignore that part for now

ok

don’t do that yet (for reasons of what I need to do in a few minutes) first try lynx http://192.168.0.14/

hang on i have to install on this one lynx ok i gets the error again

ok, we

yes, we

are going to pause for now (maybe for tonite… havent’ decided yet)

hey, i’m paying by the hour here

can .4 surf the web ?

what’s a .4?

etch + promise TX2000 help anyone? can it be done?

hehe noob question guys how do i install stuff? .

Geoff—: that’s your private business

i can use apt-get

apt-get install package but I like sharing my private business :P

Hi

try #ubuntu

excuseme

seriously though… does debian have dmraid or anything that will recognise a fakeraid mirror as a single drive?

kubuntu live CD is excelent for using IRCs

yes

specially when you have problems installing debian

Geoff—: i’m using the X GUI…how do i input commands like that?

that way - so you’re -purposely- trolling

X will have a package manager… but failing that open a terminal window and type it in there.

bye

now is better

bahaha.. i dunno if ubuntu really wants to be like debian :P

Geoff—: how do i open a terminal window?

and that’s my cue

Geoff–: yes i choose a synonym :P

what hey there

I have some problems installing debian, i have a HP dv6000 laptop and after installing debian with netinst CD, it tries to boot, but after some seconds the screen gets in black it has an Nvidia, someone has an idea what’s happening?

may be the hd

i can mount in my live CD the filesystem

so stop trying to start X .. look in the X log

how?

.

which version of debian is it ?

etch 4.0 stable last one

try appending: nodma to the grub boot stanza

nodma?, i am like new in something else than windows, unfortunately and i speak spanish . So let me see if i understand it, i add to the GRUB a line ‘nodma’?

!es

Por favor usen #debian-es, alli obtendran mas ayuda. Spanish Speakers: Please use #debian-es, there you will get much more help.

I was following web site a guide off of the gentoo website to install xfce4 on my system after installing gentoo linux

but i checked this one, linked on your howto, today: http://gentoo-wiki.com/Apache_Modules_mod_php

Hi there. Does anyone know what evolutions “profile” use flag does?

i still dont understand how you have the module but not the conf when they are both supplied by php

equery uses evolution

I see. why emerge isn’t generating 70_mod_php.conf is a mystery to me but certainly the biggest part of the problem. might try googling (or ask #gentoo-apache) for a skeleton

http://genx.easyshellz.com/gentoo/etc/70_mod_php5.conf

i just copied a system from one puter to another, but now all my dependancies are being resolved as circular. any ideas?

i don’t either i read that. copied it already.

KWhat_Work, “Adds profile support to builds of packages (will likely vary from ebuild to ebuild in support)”. Well, that doesn’t say that much

restart apache and should be all good

alveraan, it is likely to support profiling.

Draconx|Laptop, ok thanks

at least i got a php-error now! yay!

you’re gold, congrats

it add support for multiple profiles. ie different profiles have different configs settings etc

anyone know how long it take s to emerge -av kde-meta ?

KWhat_Work, ah.. which can be changed on the fly so one doesn’t have to logout

and is there input needed throw the install ?

i dont know if evolution can do it on the fly but something like that

one can only guess WILDLY but probably 6-10 hours, give or more likely take 4

very different on many systems somewhere between 24hrs and a week

wow

How can i know from what ebuild is a file?

its been my experience that you dont eff with evolution due to the overwhelming amount of bugs. If it works dont touch it.

what is the fastest way ?

thanks, it works now :-D

equery d /path/to/file

qfile filename or equery f filename

sorry equery b /path/to/file

YES equery!

KWhat_Work, Yeah maybe. But once it is stable, it works like a charm

equery b /path/to/file. equery is in gentoolkit

er equery b filename

i didn’t rememver the command

emerge -1av kdebase-meta will give you a functional kde system already. then you can emerge kde-meta

thanks u all :***

which package provides the aoss command?

equery f works, after a while

will this emerge 1av kdabase-meta give me the graphical part of kde or is it still just cli ?

qfile /path/to/file is much faster, comes from ‘portage-utils’

please could someone who has aoss do an equery b `which oss`?

it will give you the desktop, provided that you already emerged xorg-x11 and some login manager such as kdm

isn’t it in alsa-oss ?

all i have done at this point is use handbook to install gentoo and emeger irssi

koollman, thanks i’ll reinstall

so i need to emerge xorg-x11 and emerge kdm ?

koollman, install even

not kdm if you intend on a -meta let it pull it in

that will give you a graphical login screen.

yo any1 good with recompiling the kernel?

ok so just emerge xorg-X11 ?

whats your issue

kdebase and kdebase-meta both depend on kdm

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml

on second thought, maybe not

jrup, look here http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/list.xml, section “Installing your Desktop”

one way it will block i forget kdebase includes it i think

hi folks. I have a FLAC and a cuesheet and I want single files out of it. Any hints for that?

kk thanks

hi all, what’s the simplest way (as in lite) to get a higher resolution console at boot? i’ve read the wiki but i get the feeling i don’t need 90 procent of all that stuff, i don’t want graphics just a slightly higher rez. (ati-drivers/gentoo sources)

hey can some1 help me with a make error when im trying to recomplie my kernel and my system time is being gay

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Framebuffer_Support

pr00f, what’s the error?

I ran the command to fix expat with GTK+, however I am still receiving errors when I try to compile it. I’m on an AMD64. http://pastebin.com/m7fbc9c1

ill nopaste oiit

tobi?

anyone else having expat errors on x8_64? x86_64*

Humm ok forget hp-check, I can print a test page from cups but I cannot get open office 2.3 to print using the cups printer. How do I fix this?

did you read the topic?

tomboy64, I’ve read the topic, and I’ve run the expat command mzbot will give you for gtk+ tomboy64, still getting the error

New nvidia drivers completely fix my compiz-fusion crashes, woot.

compiled OOo with USE=cups ? grep for libexpat.so.0 in /lib and /usr/lib, those need to be rebuilt

DCC SEND linuxusershaveneckbeards 0 0 0

chithead, I don’t have those… how do I go about rebuilding them?

“grep -r libexpat.so.0 /lib /usr/lib” will give you a list of files. the packages these files belong to need to be rebuilt.

killed.

I have amd64 so I’m using the openoffice-bin version

I have amd64 too and I use openoffice, not -bin

what is gentoo??

~google gentoo !google gentoo

http://www.gentoo.org/

^^

oh guess i thoiught it was masked or something

close enough

it’s not a file manager.

what is it though

ok, while I wait for program to compile; Why doesn’t GQView display jpg images? I have permissions and I’ve compiled with USE=”jpg jpeg png” options…

gentoo is a penguin and a linux distro

yo

r u all nerds?

Mantaar, :-D

disco?

yes, on amd64 you need to put it in package.keywords

someone ban that troll pls

??

http://rafb.net/p/v2shsg22.html theres the error ive been trying to get my sound card 2 work

the bin version is now compiled without cups though? it worked before

mladinov, you could ask serious/relavent questions

proof, where is the error?

http://rafb.net/p/v2shsg22.html that link

some of us are geeks, I’m sure..

maybe you are missing some other package. does downgrading openoffice-bin fix the issue?

Kyle was going to get it good. The big black sweaty beefy bodies were naked now… glistening. Their huge dick logs so thick and heavy they couldn’t even stand up when they were erect, they hung like logs, dripping pre cum and who knows what the fuck else. I think maybe some of them were diseased. So I’d have to take the kid to my friend the doc after this little party. Well, he’d have to go anyway because I was sure his asshole would b e ripped some and need stitches.

I can print a test page from cups that’s all know =P

oops wrong channel

also I can print from writer just not calc =P

thx, blackace…

yep, thx blackac e ^^

np

oh well if you can print from writer then the fault is just your OOo printer configuration

what error? read the log..

proof, sorry I don’t see any error in there

??? http://rafb.net/p/v2shsg22.html

proof, nope, still no error

Has anyone had experiences running glchess without gnome-games installed? I want it, but I don’t want that freakin’ gnome stuff, yet python goes totally AWOL when I try running…

that’s a normal kernel make/make modules_istall/make install

hrmm alright

How can I split a pdf into seperate PDFs of each page?

lol i think i cut the bottom off gimmie 1 sec

pdfsplit

I think since OOo 2.3 the printer settings are saved along with the document. can you print a newly created table?

try the pdfjam package. It lets you perform lots of crazy stuff with pdf.

can anyone tell me why gqview refuses to display jpg images (it doesn’t even see them) when I have permissions and compiled it with USE=”jpg jpeg png” enabled?

is it somewhere in portage?

wam, i’ll have a look

trying it…

good luck :-)

it’s not called pdfsplit, but pdfjam should provide you with a tool for that.

Anyone have any issues with wine running Steam?

don’t remember the exact name right now.

pdftk will allow you to split and merge pdfs

Well, that’s what I thought, but seems it’s not there , when I looked at it. pdftk will indeed be the better choice…

why can root play sound through aplay but nothing else can play sound even when compiled with the USE=”alsa”?

yes i can

thanks!

what settings do I need to fix in the old sheets? Is there some converter? this is going to suck if I have to change every document to get it to print

audio group?

ezerhoden, in it

so, good luck. never used it though, gotta try it next paper xD

open the document then go to printer settings, maybe some non-existant printer is configured there

ezerhoden, root can’t even play audio through mplayer using alsa…

I want to emerge xsane to scan but udev is blocking sane-backends…. unmerging udev seems kinda scary.. ?

ezerhoden, and alsamixer and alsactl work just fine…

is there an error message if you run “mplayer -ao alsa some-file”

@tomboy64: I’ll have to use it pretty soon. Gotta extract text out of MS-Word generated files and tex it and that in a script… woohoo… sounds like FUN!

stealth, yeah I wouldn’t unmerge udev ^^

no sound.”

hi, I experience this odd problem with xorg-server 1.4-r1, latest nvidia-drivers and kde 3.5.7. Windows, when being restored from the main panel, show themselves only with a little lag.

cool, “pdftk figures.pdf burst” worked!

tex

the restore animation is shown, then half a second nothing, and then the window finally shows.

sorry my modem sucks.. my error is

are you maybe using 32 bit mplayer-bin on a 64 bit system and not emul-linux-alsa-* ?

/sbin/installkernel: line 66: mkboot: command not found make[1]: *** [install] Error 127 *** [install] Error 2

chithead, this is actually on a 32bit laptop

this is from plain kde, I suspected compiz first, but kwin shows the same symptoms…

chithead, I know confusing, but since these expat errors I cannot compile xchat (or use X) on the AMD64, so I’m using xchat on a laptop, also running Gentoo

not going to work. I have to re-lay out the whole stuff, including consequently numbered pages, sections and subsections.

just learn how to install kernels manually | cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel_name , and alter your grub.conf/menu.lst accordingly If you manage to automate that, shoot me an e-mail: wily@bur.st

stealth, this might be a stupid guess but do you have more than one udev version installed? (no idea if that’s possible)

how do i make 1 particular application install as 32bit instead of 64bit?

you can install it inside a 32-bit chroot, if necessary

Hello, can anyone tell me where I can find a url for fetching the stage from the internet?

X cpu usage pops up to 53% upon said effect

which stage?

how do i start chroot in 32bit mode?

i was looking in the handbook didnt really explain unless i over looked it

Google is your friend.

where can I get a version of ‘tail’ that would accept “tail +line_num” instead of “tail -n +line_num” ?

@wilymage: a co-student manged it and did it pretty well. I’ll use a c-proggie to extract the text and a perl script to munch through it with regexes to tag section titles. So far for the theory. I’ll drop you a line.

quit 123

write bash script? pretty straight forward..

ajmorris_, http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/base/amd64/howtos/chroot.xml

menu.lst = lilo?

wilymage hell I’ll do it from scratch this is a faster machine

this only seems to affect terminal windows…

menu.lst is grub.conf alternative name

progo, no, that’s grub

nope grub, used to be called menu.lst, they’ve migrated to grub.conf but kept the symlink

proof, grub

tks, just went to that

I guess stage3 will bebest though 8 )

Yes. wget stage3 and portage snapshot and you’re good to go.

k how do i found out the kernel name that

usually I just call it the name of the sources, like linux-2.6.16-gentoo-r9 or whatever.

I’m rather new at this 8 )

you’re better off having a ‘new’ and ‘current’ symlink pointing to the actual kernel in /boot, I find

would that over right the one your using?

no, you specify which kernel to use in grub.conf

all my video players can’t run videos using aac audio, since last world update..

i know the kernel im using now i switch to the oldkennel but how do i differentiate

what is the command to mkfs reiserfs?

dealer, enable the a52 use flag

grub

the one 1 just compiled and the one that im using now grub.conf?

I see what you mean. Just call the kernels different things if you have two builds of the same version. Put symlinks like ‘new’ and ‘current’ in your grub.conf, then in /boot: ln -s kernel-blah-blah new That way when you build new kernels you can just change the symlinks rather than editing grub.conf every time

how can i fix that?

mkfs.reiserfs

chithead, is that on the mininstallcd? chithead, thanks btw

should be

just add a52 to your global use flags in /etc/make.conf and do a emerge -uDNv world

I still can’t seem to find a url for the stage3

figured it out now, for some reason when you are printing a file in the dialog it lets you choose 3 options, “print all”, “range”, or “selection”. I was entering a range and trying to print the range of sheets. For some reason on old xls sheets, there is an additional option under a button “options” that defaults to on, “print selected sheets only”…. this hidden option overrules whatever you choose on the main dialog. So no

-U%” works fine and shows all samba shares, but cannot find one link from //server box. What is wrong?

How do I set up Hg?

Trying to solve a couple of problems. #1, keyboard led lights. num, caps, and scroll lock lights are not lighting up. 2. Numpad keys are unresponsive excpet for pad-enter key. I just recently upgraded from xorg-server 1.3 to 1.4 and yes I have rebuilt my kbd driver.

mirrors

Google is your friend: http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors.xml

I was at that page but then I’m not sure in which of the sub directories it is

Could not create /home/jrup/.irssi dirrectory ?

releases/snapshots ?? distfiles?

ShadeS, are you reading the gentoo guide?

think I found it ..

ShadeS, *installation* guide

i had a issue with finding the snapshoot on one mirror as well

I’m not really following the guide persay. I’m refering to it in times of trouble The ones I keep finding are for networkless installs I’m not sure if doig a networked install will be ‘better’ or not

look on the canadian mirrors i think 2nd one .. there you will find the snapshoots

Perhaps following the guide would abate the necessity for you to clarify steps here?

what is a good command line mail client?

Last time I did it I did a networked install cause I ran the bootstrap script to do a stage 1 install.

pine

hello everyone. I am running compiz fusion on a Intel 965GM chipset. C-F starts fine, as I can see the windows wobble. But as soon as I try to minimize the window the whole system hangs. What could be the problem?

mutt, but try both

ShadeS, follow the guide, it is useful. Anyway, the dirctory is releases

ok ok i see what u mean

name a lot.. i’m going ot see which i like best

ill just name the new kernel kernel -blah blah-new

Had a similar problem with my NVidia card, but the latest drivers fixed it.

ok ok ok but the problem still is when i compile the kernel im trying to get to work with my sound card i get an error

Anyone have any ideas as to why I have lost my numpad keys?

wilymage, I am using the intel driver :-S

you could try disabling the Windows minimising effect?

i get those errors

wilymage perhaps 8 )

/sbin/installkernel: line 66: mkboot: command not found make[1]: *** [install] Error 127 *** [install] Error 2

wilymage, it even dies if I try to turn the desktop cube

do I need to PB the smb.conf and the log files?

if you copy /usr/src/linux/arch/{your-arch}/boot/bzImage to /boot/kernelname, that installs the kernel. you needn’t ‘make install’

is the pkglist for ‘emerge –resume’ saved in a file somewhere?

Maybe he should use genkernel.

proof, and don’t forget to mount /boot if not done already ^^

sorry to hear that, but after the hundred-odd hard-freezes I experienced in the last few months, I do feel like gloating a little

The active vm could not be found how to fix?

wilymage,

Is there a good tool to crop PDFs? pdfcrop doesnt work somehow!

oh well, networkless it is then

what exactly do mean by ‘crop’

I assume he means ’split pages’

will anyone be kind enough to help me out?

cut out a piece

http://rafb.net/p/jTRzOJ55.html

:nyk2005: pages or images? If the former, pdfsplit will do. or.. pdftk ^^

pages…

is it possible to change CHOST=”x86_64-pc-linux-gnu” to CHOST=”i686″ and CFLAGS=”-march=k8″ to CFLAGS=”-march=pentium4″ and recompile your system so it could run on a p4?

NO

only have about 30 minutes left, can use some quick help, if that is possible.

no (and the proposed setting for CHOST isn’t valid by the way).

pdfsplit doesn cut off the lower border somehow!

TBotNik_g, you’d probably be better of in a samba channel

yo sorry modem went out again

kerframil, now that you mention it i remember that it isn’t exactly i686

comcast is frustrating me

aah, so you want to actually _modify_ those pages… uhm.. no idea :-|

open here and on #samba and #linux, but is Gentoo box.

but i under stand about changing the kernel name

yes.

but what do u do about those make errors?

tied “pdfcrop –margins ‘10 10 10 30′ –clip f1.pdf o.pd”, but it doesnt cut the lower border…

they’re make install errors, not make errors

is there a vector editor?

there’s no problem with your make, if you install your kernel as I suggested, you’ll be fine

well then rotate it and cut the former lower border

ok

i am having another problem with getting my ps2 mouse to work in X…i get “dlopen: /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/input//mouse_drv.so: undefined symbol: miPointerGetMotionEvents”

thats an idea!

and a couple more errors about failing to load the mouse modules

if you just upgraded to xorg-server-1.4, rebuild the keyboard & mouse modules again

did you try to recompile xf86-input-mouse?

now I get it… it’s just cutting of the empty stuff, not INTO the page

besides, the P4 acquired x86_64 support at least 3 years ago.

kerframil, i’m using a 1.8ghz northwood

http://rafb.net/p/GAlNgC70.html (Xorg 1.4-r1, latest nvidia drivers, strange lags with terminal windows and these messages seem to be connected)

chithead, thanks that did the trick

where is the grub.conf again? boot?

ah, you’re out of luck then.

proof, /boot/grub

80% of CPU usage and the delevery is much slow than clamdscan?

ok a compiled kernel copied it over and conf grub.conf i noticed a lot of dif kernel builds in boot how do i get rid of the ones im not using anymore rm?

proof, yes

or emerge –depclean

rm, also, I think it would be prudent if you read a guide on basic UNIX commands.

my kernels used to be called vmlinux i changed it to kernel name-new… that should be ok right?

as long as you have a reference to the new name in grub.conf http://mally.stanford.edu/~sr/computing/basic-unix.html

is there a specific driver or is there a generic one for joysticks

XD

bah, please don’t make me sit through that /names again

udev question- i am trying to write a rule to identify a device by the model, but udevinfo lists this as ATTR{model}==”model here”, there are no SYSFS{} things listed. can i use the ATTR in udev rules?

wilymage, looks like it might help, unfortunately i’m not using olive-gtk

Play nice then. Realize that there will always be users under (and over) your skill level inhere.

I can see what you are trying to do and, in order to do that, you need packet writing support in th ekernel.

yeah I know, was just the only patch I could find that looked pertinant

is there a good howto out there that covers closing the laptop lid as an acpi event?

ah yea

I am still having trouble with random crashes when swapping virtual terminals. It doesn’t happen everytime, just randomly. Aside from installing a new video card, how can I diagnose whether this is a hardware issue, or software?

i forgot to do that ty kerframil

/dev/dsp will only work with proper OSS emulation. If you want to test alsa directly instead (I’ll recommend ALSA), do: aplay - /dev/urandom

beandog, well there really isnt much to the default.sh script I know I have messed with some acpi stuff before

rubiks120, yah that is a lot smaller than I thought.

beandog, I am looking at some of the scripts under events right now it seems to be that what happens in one of the events scripts gets passed through the default.sh script

rubiks120, right, when an acpi state changes, acpid will call that event name

alsasound doesnt give me an error when its loading though i have no idea whats wrong

and the events scripts just call scripts in the action folder

right so I guess you just wanna find the event name for when you close your lid

you’ve unmuted before, right?

and script something in there for that case

when it says MM its muted right

yeah

im unmuted

gotta press ‘m’ in order to unmute

ahh aplay yes, I’ve had OSS compatibility for so long I forgot about that.

? comcast is gonna die…

problem with expat again… E17 will not build… here is the pastebin of the error… http://pastebin.com/m7e5e4774

proof__, ? that was random!

beandog, the problem there is when I close my lid I lose my screen completely it doesnt come back

my modem goes out ever 15 mins

yes, me too, but I don’t like it. I really want to get rid of it, but some stuff STILL uses it… *mumble*

but yea i configuered my kernel correctly im pritty sure i made new image and booted it

rubiks120, right … adding an event can fix that.

y is it not working ….

rubiks120, since the default obviously isnt working.

just another bad habit I need to break..

rubiks120, look up vbetool stuff too, that should help fix the blanking issue. I think. dont quote me on that.

proof__, what sort of modem is it?

sb450

plenty of them, I’m sure… if it’s as bad as me ^^

Hello, How is everyone today?

surf board somthing or other 101

proof__, a modem, an adsl modem, ?

i think no comcast broadband

beandog based on some stuff I found in gentoo thats what I need, but I also need to steal my roomates pc and take care of some stuff via ssh so I can get the needed information

anybody? A command to fix my expat issues with E17?

proof__, adsl, or some thing else?

must be dial-up..

http://pastebin.com/m7e5e4774

rubiks120, alright well good luck, I actually need to do the same with my laptop too, heh

beandog, well when I figure it out Ill pass my solution along

wilymage, i havnt seen a dail up modem in sooooo long

ok

* WARNING ***** You are currently installing a version of nvidia-drivers that is known not to work with a video card you have installed on your system. - so I need something older than 100.14.19?

I was following a guide off of the gentoo website to install xfce4 on my system after installing gentoo linux. It told me to do something with hald, and when I tried to do it, it says that it was not found. Can anyone explain to me what hald is and what I should do to get it?

rubiks120, Im fairly sure its a really simple fix.

I have a pile of a hundred in a cupboard next to my desk, heh

luckz, what card do you have?

meinzorn, emerge hal

4600

luckz, yes

meinzorn, hald == hal daemon

luckz, you need the nvidia-legacy driver, which, unfortunately, is only available through NVidia’s website

ok, so just type emerge hal, and it should fix it?

beandog, Im sure it is its just a matter of actually going through with everything, the ubuntu fix seems easy enough, I am just trying to work off that

hald is the hardware abstraction layer daemon and needed by some apps to properly work…

rubiks120, ubuntu fix? link?

that means manual compiling, or is there some overlay/similar that has it?

Mantaar, really? which ones actually need it?

luckz, it’s not hard, you just have to download the .run file and run it as root

what was the exact command you’ve been told to use

beandog, I dont have the link anymore it was on windows I have it saved as a google doc though

luckz, just a couple yes/no questions and it will compile it for you

rubiks120, ah okay, no worries

luckz, you’ll need to install gentoo-sources though

and I probably need to talk gentoo into believing that I have nvidia-drivers with a fake ebuild or so? why do I need to install gentoo-sources?

I was left with the impression that GNOME-ish stuff depends on it. Especially those that configure your hardware. But I ditched GNOME so far and I can’t tell you exactly

beandog, I can email it to you if you would like it

luckz, because the NVidia driver needs a kernel source to build against

I have a kernel source, but I’m not using gentoo-sources

luckz, the easiest thing is to just build it yourself… tricking gentoo would be… complicated

# /etc/init.d/hald start is the command I was told to use

what should i add to xorg.conf for a joystick?

luckz, do you have the kernel source for the version you are currently running, and is it linked to /usr/src/linux?

yeah, but I mean after installing it I have to trick gentoo to not want to install nvidia-drivers, no?

and then it said to add it to the default runlevel, which I also can’t do without having it.

yes, I have it and yes, it is linked.

luckz, then you just need to download the run file luckz, gentoo shouldn’t ‘want’ to install nvidia drivers unless you told it to…

so, it tells you that it didn’t find it? so you gotta emerge it. But if none of your software actually depends on it (which is the reason it’s not there in the first place) I wonder if you really need it. as long as xfce is running fine you probably don’t need it.

rubiks120, if you remember, great, if you dont, no worries

well, I am using video_cards = nv nvidia, that introduces the nvidia-drivers package as dependency

Mantaar, yah, I dunno, I just ignore it and let it do its thing.

how do i stop gentoo from setting RUBYOPT for every new shell?

I haven’t actually started xfce yet, that was the next step in the guide. I will try to start it without, and if that doens’t work, I will try to emerge it. I will be back with progress. Thank you for the help!

luckz, it shouldn’t be a problem, if and when emerge does overwrite your legacy driver installtion, you’ll just have to reinstall it manually… sorry anyone care to help me with an expat build error?

Mantaar, its probably, just not in the ebuilds, thats pretty common, if its for a GUI enviornment its goign to be so you can insert usbsticks/cdroms and have them automatically appear

how do i make it so a user other than root can use irssi ?

ok, good luck then. It should be as easy as: emerge -av hald

I just a while ago read in a forum thread where somebody manually installed nvidia-legacy-drivers and had to write an ebuild to talk his machine into not permanently trying to install nvidia-drivers I’m used to the default behaviour being that root *can’t* run it

row. That’s how much free main memory you have right?

(on non-gentoo, though)

luckz, on linux?

how do i stop gentoo from setting RUBYOPT for every new shell?

yes yes… but some other stuff too. I just know, if I use one ‘o them filthy GTK apps and it tells me ‘couldn’t connect to hal daemon’ I’ll start it and leave it at that. It’s not in my default rc since I hardly ever use it.

I am using root to run it now but i was to switch to a user account i created

on what else? :x

luckz, bsd, osx, hell there are a lot of unixes around,

well, you might want to move your .irssi/ folder in the home dir to that user

can anyone help me with an expat error? http://pastebin.com/m7e5e4774

this somebody could have used package.provided instead

The best b2evolution host.

what is the cp command to move that from root to user account ?

anyway I can solve an expat error without recompiling all the bloody deps of a package, which I might mention have already been recompiled before…

jrup, cp -v ~root/file ~user jrup, cp -v ~root/file ~user/

hello how do I find out how long a process is in i/o wait ?

you may also wish to chown user:users ~/file

thanks

Hi, I’m having a problem installing xfce on gentoo linux, can anyone help me?

paste errors somewhere that we can see them, or give more info.

is it something hald-related or did that one work out?

yes, it is hal related. When I try to emerge hal it states “You MUST build sys-apps/pciutils without the zlip USE flag”

hey, whats the command to properly update system

/etc/portage/package.use

Hello, what is the way to ‘reduce’ threaths on mysql? when I start mysql I have aprox 10 mysqld instances, I have a one database and I think that is ‘too expensive’, any idea how to reduce it?

emerge -uDN world…………. i generally do emerge -uDNav world try #mysql

whew. ipv6 works \m/

And when I do that I should be able to emerge hal now?

hey how do I to found module for my webcam a4tech pk-130 mg?

emerge -N pciutils google

It says no outdated packages were found on this system

Skunky I did it but I dont found

what package are glxinfo and glxgears part of?

mesa-progs

It says no outdated packages were found on this system

when i run gensplash, gdm(in the default runlevel) shows up on tty2 not tty7 and keyboard input is not working(I think it’s going to the agetty process on tty2(

emerge -av pciutils and tell me what it says

I want to emerge xsane to scan but udev is blocking sane-backends…. unmerging udev seems kinda scary.. ? what do I do?

It says “these are the packages that would be merged, in order: and then it lists the pciutils one

and in the USE thing at the end, does it have -zlib ?

yes, it does.

do I want to bother manually installing 97.55 nvidia drivers or are 96.39 just as good?

so hit y and let it rebuilt it.

Maybe you need to upgrade udev

I believe it said that I don’t want to use that flag to build the package.

mistik1, oooohh.. good call.. thanks

np

How do I have it build without that flag?

it says -zlib, RIGHT? not zlib, but -zlib

that is what /etc/portage/package.use is for, setting individual package use flags

paste the 1 line of out put from emerge that begins [ebuild R ] sys-apps/pciutils

:O rm -rf /

rm -rf / won’t work on Gentoo boxes…

Bill Gates discovers that women, unlike computers, do not accept 3.5″ floppies. lol

No, it says zlib -hal. I can’t copy and paste.

/etc/portage/package.use

Is that so

or better, edit that file and fix it

can anyone help me with a mzbot command?

? wiki slew secret of the universe

nothing found

gentoo slew secret of the universe

http://www.gentoo.org/

It looks like that worked. Thank you for the time and patients.

google slew secret of the universe

http://mikeschuler.web.aplus.net/index.html

Make sure you rebuild everything from “eix -IcC x11-drivers” i dont know how to do that

ah emerge -n eix && update-eix && eix -IcC x11-drivers | less

sorry about that, should work now

reisio, thanks. sorry, still tying to learn this.

the bot factoid might have mentioned what eix is :p

eix -IcC x11-drivers|grep -v matches|awk ‘{print$2}’|xargs emerge -v; should do it.

teach slew eix

No such faq

stupid bot!

heh

would it be faster to install xorg-x11 if i downloaded the file or use emerge xorg-x11

use emerge

reisio, i followed the link in the mzbot msg but it goes to a blog entry that mentions the update but not much else. thanks, though.

k i am doing that now but wow its taking like forever

don’t ever _ever_ not use emerge to install programs, if you have to, just make an ebuild for any program not in portage. it would take longer if you tried it manually :P

oh i see .. so is emerge the same deal as yum for fedora

yes but smarter

smarter how so ?

well sometimes…

i never had a issue using yum

not exactly - yum is just a frontend to rpm, IIRC

man emerge

kk

must not have used it very long :p

make sure to checkout gentoo.org/doc eix is a great search tool for packages. emerge eix && eix-sync

what package would i need to recompile if my usb mouse isnt working in xorg

ok, it worked to emerge hal now.. but when I try to continue to emerge xfce4 I get a different problem with gtk. It says cairo needs the X flag to set

x11-drivers/xf86-input-mouse

I have a Compaq Proliant DL380 oops not done hold on

ok, so, add x11-libs/cairo X to /etc/portage/package.use, just like you -zlib’d pciutils

i have used yum alot .. and for a fair amount of time .. just never realy had issues with it .. at teh same time the little i have used emerge its worked fine as well

I have a Compaq Proliant DL380. As far as partitioning, what do I need to do? Do I just create partitions as usual? What do I do about /boot partition?

do you think there’s something special about a compaq proliant dl380?

has anyone had problems with gcalctool and/or gnome-applets? mine won’t compile

ok i tryed to recompile it. my mouse still isnt working

Yes. I am worried that the fact that there is more than one drive that it thinks is one, will cause problems. I don’t know what GRUB will do…

euphor][a: if they have, and they’re responsible, they’d have reported them at bugs.gentoo.org

anything else i need to do?

does X start?

yes x starts

nothing in bugs, and I know 4 people, myself included, with the issue

just no mouse

euphor][a: so file a bug already

I guess its time to file a bug

my mouse isnt even getting power

…then it’s not a software issue, silly

it is im saying the laser isnt coming on

that’s a hardware issue.

which means it’s a hardwar issue.

the mouse works fine, the laser comes on when the mouse is activated

??

dude it works fine …

acid_, so it has power then?

yea…. it works fine on my lappy

you just contradicted yourself

on my other computer it works fine

wait. The mouse does not work one machine and works on the other, right?

acid_, lets focus on one machine at a time

im just saying the mouse works… its a software issue

bled

that’s probably a misconfigured kernel on the second. Still largely a hardware issue - or rather a kernel one.

not hardware at all then

i think this is a udev issue

euphor][a: not sure still. Could be a broken usb-hub. But I think it’s a missing USB driver in the kernel.

what is the module called?

there’s only a few options to enable to get USB HID working, dmesg should show if hub was found

yes

I am installing Gentoo on a Compaq Proliant DL380. It has four disks which are one logical volume in /dev/ida/c0d0. Do I just partition that as usual and have grub install to /dev/ida/c0d0? Which disk does the DL380 boot from, the first?

the module’s called usb-hid. But udev should load that automatically

It is still saying the same thing when I type that in.

does the number of packages differ in installation when you use the CLI versus the GTK installer?

what’s the output of: grep USB_HID /usr/src/linux/.config

jup, the partitions should be c0c0pX then.

um. it what is saying who?

hmm, im kinda new to dpkg in gentoo, but i downloaded a .deb emerged dpkg and tried dpkg –install foo.deb and it said /var/lib/dpkg/status no such file or directory. I also tried creating the directory and it said no such device. so i rm’d it

Y

I would think not, as long as you don’t opt to have the installer install “extra”/”additional” packages - which I definitely recommend you do not

anyone know how i can get this .deb installed?

you partition the disk before you start an OS, the array is presented to the OS as a single disk with up to 15 partitions.

what’s the package?

how can i identify my motherboard’s chipset?

reisio, papaya, a gtk MUD client.

So if I want a swap partition on each disk, I would have to create four logical disks with the ROM utility from Compaq?

1min

PCI: failed to allocate mem resource #6: 20000 @ 900…., he is using an intel DG965WH

reisio, sure thing

When I try to emerge xfce4 I still get an error that says cairo needs the X flag set

ok, grep your dmesg for USB related stuff.

if you want to use it as 4 separate disks, then stop using the driver for the ida entirely……

what’s the latest version?

you added cairo to package.use? you emerge -Nav cairo and it shows you it’s gonna add X to it?

since it is striped RAID, if I create a swap partition on the logical drive, it will spread it out over multiple drives anyway right?

oh nm

http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Image:Office1900.jpg LOL

it seems the person who contributed the ebuild at bugs.gentoo.org is a/the developer, so she’d know what’s best http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17108 wiki amy_ 3rd party

use the ebuild attached to the bug, follow the wiki directions

Hello.

‘lo Renfield

I was in here yesterday with a “Segmentation fault” problem. Various applications were crashing. It was mentioned that this was probably a hardware problem.

If I am using RAID 5, if I create a swap partition on the logical drive, it will spread the swap out over multiple drives right?

I did not and do not think it is. I was asked to run Memtest86+ for 6+ hours. I ran it for 9.5 hours, and it passed the memory test seven times. I also have running CPU Burn-in, which has surpassed 10,870,000 iterations with no problems.

in theory yes

Renfield, crazy CFLAGS?

thanks

what kinds of operations segfault? how and when and where and with what did you compile them?

I don’t think so: -O2 -march=pentium3 -pipe

ok, now I feel dumb. It is working. Thank you again. I’m sure I’ll be back for more help.

Renfield, Looks good, CXXFLAGS the same? LDFLAGS?

Well, I have seen the “caching service dependencies” script, depcache.sh? seg fault. Also ebuild.sh

ok my mouse still will not load up any other ideas on what i can try

Oh, here we go, I just did “cat /etc/make.conf” and got a seg fault.

usb-hud is Y in kernel hid*

I did it a second time and it didn’t seg fault. CXXFLAGS is set to CFLAGS, LDFLAGS is unset.

jon56, what about usb_ehci, usb_ohci and usb_hcd?

when u use the liveCD to install is it the same procedure as minimal?

it is if you want it to be

I started out with a stage three install, and did the rebuild of everything as suggested if I wanted a simulated “stage 1″ install.

good idea, IMO

test your RAM

i need them all y ?

jon56, build them as modules

reisio, ok, so if i made a script for my firned it should still run the same way?

As I said, I ran Memtest86+ for 9.5 hours.

how are cpu temps?

hrmm

Renfield, and this started happening after emerge -e world?

the only things I can think of that are different are…

I ran CPU Burn-in all day. Not a problem. I’m not overclocking this 733MHZ p3.

your friend would have to first start a terminal himself, and root is reached by using ’sudo’, or ’sudo passwd’, then su’ing into root

wow, that’s the nastiest steff I’ve seen in quite a while. Maybe your toolchain was compiled erroneously…

Does anyone know if there’s an ebuild for the video converter handbrake? I can’t seem to find one

This started happening after booting up for the first time after finishing the kernel install.

and the process to get online is slightly different

any cflag,chost changes?

what’s it do?

so Gentoo LiveCD runs fine?

or rather, what’s it do that ffmpeg doesn’t do? :p

I’ve already answered that as well.

reisio, poop, thats what i made the script for

heh

It has. It ran fine all the while I was installing.

for getting online?

reisio, converts almost every video format, with a GUI.. http://handbrake.m0k.org/

well kinda

depending on how smart your script is, it might not matter

it a realyy dumb script

Since booting “into” my Gentoo box, now without the live cd, it’s been doing this.

then it must use ffmpeg :p

just has him set stuff up

ok looks like i already have all the support options enabled so what else could i try

OK, then it’s not at all a hardware issue. when did you compile gcc or didn’t you do that so far?

Maybe I’m just stupid, isn’t a Pentium 3 an i686? I thought I verified that.

reisio, he cant load the minimal install cd

can’t you just stick to the minimal? ah, heh

pentium3 is i686.

like his box won’t boot from it?

to the best of my knowledge: yes

reisio, he has a weird motherboard

Ok, so I am using the correct stage.

sure it’s not just a BIOS boot order issue?

reisio, yeah intel DG965WH

well stage3 x86 chost is i486

I have CHOST=”i686-pc-linux-gnu” and I didn’t touch it.

what are your cflags?

reisio, i am not sure about boot order

GCC was rebuilt.

that’s fine and can be changed after.

don’t keep asking him the same questions over and over again

i mean my mouse was working fine before i emerge world

reisio, he cant even find his install medium

mind your own business.

http://xrl.us/6qz6

likewhoa, is it worth it.. its a p3 450mhz using it as a router

allocationg mem resource error

jon56, have you $ etc-update after this emerge -e world?

There’s a step in the install where you can do that pseudo stage 1 install by having it rebuild everything. I did that.

When was GCC rebuilt? In the chroot?

not familiar with that one

Yes.

wow that’s slow. but for a router is fine i guess.

reisio, yeah its something weird about his motherboard

yea works like a champ

ah, cheers reisio

and you’ve also tried to run the usual installation procedure to no avail?

what choice should i make when etc-update ask me

The usual? You mean without rebuilding everything?

-3?

jon56, can’t remeber what -3 is …

yes. Like it’s in the handbook. Booting largely off the stage stuff you downed from the net.

automerge all remaining files

heheh http://www.google.com/search?q=ffmpeg%20site%3Ahandbrake.m0k.org

I usally do -5 and look over the files it changed after

I’d use dispatch-conf instead of etc-update, personally

I’ve had bad experiences with chrooted toolchain compiles befor, though never _that_ bad.

reisio, so the net-setup script isnt part of live CD?

Hello @ll

I don’t think so - it’s certainly not part of the documentation

boooooo

didn’t check last time I used the livecd, it had a text file with instructions on how to use ifconfig

net-setup is still on the livecd.

i c

it’s always been on it.

which option in dispatch-conf

the ‘livecd’, or the ‘installcd’

Oh, so if I just install straight stage 3 I can just emerge -e system, emerge -e world after I get it stable outside the chroot?

installcd.

xTorT: question is whether it’s on the ‘livecd’

reisio, Do you know of any other GUI frontend for ffmpeg? CLI looks pretty confusing. I need it to convert videos for my iPhone.

uhm… I think you’ve confused me with someone else… dispatch-conf?

there are some good ones for mplayer/mencoder, which is about the same thing

sorry

actually the livecd as that’s what i normally use.

lol

how can i extract a windows self-extracting zip thingy on linux? can unzip do it?

juc0, there must surely be zillions of HOWTOs on this matter, google is your friend

not that I’m necessarily knocking handbrake - I don’t know anything about it, I just prefer the source, and CLI

dunno, you can try.

likewhoa, passwd work?

yes

which option in dispatch-conf?

to be honest, I _never_ did anything like emerge -e world. You should be fine with just the upgrades. Doing too much in chroot can really wreak havoc. Just try to follow the normal handbook procedure.

likewhoa, sudo passwd or just passwd

‘u’ for use-new, if it’s a conf you’ve never altered

sudo passwd

that will be the case for the vast majority

no problem, I was just confused ^^

likewhoa, do i have to sudo emerge or sudo fdisk

to gain root, just sudo su.

likwhoa ok do i have to set a pw first?

then passwd if you want to change livecd’s scrambled root password.

Ok, I’ll try it that way. Thanks.

like sudo passwd then sudo su

it’s optional.

likewhoa, ok cool thanks you made my script alot shorter

the livecd auto scrambles the root password.

and get boot into your new system as soon as it’s ready to take that. That’s usually when you’ve compiled a kernel, set a timezone, and installed grub alongside basic stuff like a syslog and crond. good luck!

so the installcd doesn’t include net-setup?

likewhoa, yeah, do sudo doenst even really do anything correct? other than make sure you want to do what you are doing

i don’t think i’ve ever burned the installcd.

so i just do u to every package its asked me like 20 times already

it did back when it was called the ‘minimal’, that’s all I know

To be clear, you mean you’ve never done “emerge -e world” or you’ve never done it inside the chroot?

yes

what we didn’t know was whether or not the current ‘livecd’ image has net-setup

Because at least you need to do that when upgrading GCC from 3.x to 4.x.

What file is it that bash reads on login? .bashrc or .bash_profile?

reisio ?

.bashrc

_profile calls .bashrc

I guess old habits die hard. I started with Gentoo when you could do a stage 1 install. So when I found that you couldn’t, I looked for and found the documentation to do the pseudo stage 1 install. I guess that’s not the way to go now.

no, I’ve never used emerge -e. It’s only needed when there’s a new major version of your compiler. or some nasty compiler bug.

so, I installed crossdev and then did crossdev i686-mingw32, but I don’t have the xmerge script, am I missing something?

reisio, if _profile source it, right?

stage1 is not supported anymore.

Users are strongly discouraged to do stage1.

yea i just realized that the other day

only developers use stage1 or people making livecds.

Yes, I know! There is the pseudo stage 1. Not sure what you call it.

my first install was stage1 :-D

you really gotta know what you’re doing with a stage1 tarball.

yup

It’s the install stage 3, then run that buildscript.sh or something.

eh just bootstrap emerge system,

Oh, bootstrap that’s it.

stage3 doesn’t need bootstrap.sh

but if its a system I want -Os on, I follow up with an emerge -e system

only stage1

i do stage3s now just cus my comps are getting slow

reisio, so it is .bash_profile that gets read first? then whaterver files I source?

heh, distcc

I’m not sure of the order

you’ll not gain anything from that if you don’t apply any serious customization to how the gentoo system works. So, stage3’s the way to go. You’ll have a working system in less than an hour. Including compile times.

can always check the bash source code :p

But if you want everything specifically compiled/optimized to your specific system, and not generalized to any x86 family of processors, then you rebuild it all.

yea compile gcc over distcc? glibc over distcc? hmm

can i have it make all the configs at once instead of asking me?

When an interactive shell that is not a login shell is started, bash reads and executes commands from ~/.bashrc, if that file exists.

you can surely recompile everything. But you’re better off doing that once your system is already running.

man bash says ~/.bash_profile is first, after /etc/profile

reisio, likewhoa , awesome, thanks!

It’s tough for me to get over just installing binaries. I came to Gentoo from linux web hosting from Scratch. I like having everything that is installed on my system installed directly from source. Maybe that’s just a false warm-n-fuzzy now.

/INVOCATION, if you’re interested

i used a weekend to get gentoo working

you can still do that with stage3.

my first time, and it finally boots alone

only do stage1 if you know how to fix your own issues. gentoo will not support stage1 compile errors.

Ok, I’ll try it that way, though your statement that you’ve never done an emerge -e world lead me to belive I should even recompile after I’m finished installing.

I installed a reiser4 patched system with nothing but minimal install CD in less than two hours. ;-) You just have to know your hardware…

*shouldn’t* But anyway thanks for the suggestions.

it was my first time.. i think it was good compared to the weeks i spent on red hat and debian

wow, it has taken me like 12 hours to get where I am (trying to get xfce working)

recompiling something isn’t that productive. Just be sure to have your useflags set and include –newuse in your emerge command, so everything that isn’t up to par is recompiled accordingly. Everything else… irrelevant. ;-)

Is dbus and hal support for thunar only good for displaying devices, or will I miss anything else if I compile it without those two use flags?

where do you get xmerge for cross compiling? I am trying to cross compile for win32

mabhobs, IIRC it work just like in GNOME

in what language?

lol! I needed about a month to get a seriously working debian install. But that was my first contact with linux. My first Gentoo install was pretty OK, apart from some Xorg issues. It took me an evening. From then on… installation times decreased exponentially.

there is like 200 packages can i have it create all of them at once?

with dispatch-conf, not sure you can use etc-update if you want to :p

sorry I did not understand.

how can you consider gentoo acceptable for production use when it takes an eternity just to setup a kde system?

i’m a slow typer, but i have not yet encountered any major problems on gentoo

just don’t come crying to me when you hose an important conf

it ask me to overwrite each when i do -3

‘production use’ and ‘kde’ don’t go together :p so don’t do -3

no production server would use a desktop :P

production use as in client office use

then yes.

you’ll get there.. ;-) in due time. I’m still not where I want to be, but on the way… just go ahead.

I suppose you could image a install, it just takes forevr with every single package compiling btw, server’s can and do use gui’s …e.g. w2k3 server’s and mac os x server’s

nah, it takes a day, once

woot .. i have x working

that’s not linux.

rofl, those aren’t servers :p

xorg that is

you got that right

i’m both dreading it and looking forward to the cahllenge ^^,

Can someone please tell me why my Gentoo shell thinks that all DNS IPs are taken? http://pastebin.com/d5dc5a992

now, _that’s_ exitement… :-D

Hi. Anyone know if ‘emerge –sync’ is just a wrapper for an rsync operation, and, if-so, what would the rsync command be? (want to create a portage mirror but only have a debian server on which to host it)

hey i was wondering how to unmask this package i know i’m just supposed to put the name in a file but i don’t remember where it’s supposed to be created or what it’s supposed to be named

heh, rsync ofcourse.

portage is open source… which?

if you want to create a portage rsync mirror checkout gentoo.org

halflife-steam

what’s your arch?

gentoo baxter_kylie portage rsync mirror

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/rsync.xml

ppc…

2.0?

I will say though that gentoo is surprisingly easy to setup

that only assists in setting up rsyncd… not creating a local copy of portage on a non-gentoo machine

(and no I did not use the gui livecd :P)

i just wanna get a dedicated linux server running for team fortress 2

Should I try in smoothie channel instead, or is it gentoo related? It just doesn’t dhcpd….

how does ‘emerge -ptv halflife-steam’ say it’s masked?

what do u mean 2.0

wiki baxter_kylie local rsync

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Local_Rsync_Mirror

gimme a second lemme check

3/w 12

same story

is just says it’s masked by missing keyword

how come gentoo isn’t mirrored at kernel.org?

they all assume you already have portage and simply want to share /usr/portage

would be nice if it was, kernel.org is a really fast mirror

anyone have a idea how long it takes to emerge -1av kdebase-meta

kde meta has 300+ packages to emerge jrup

any idea

I’m doing it now myself

just use rsync. read it’s manual.

wow so xorg had like 134 .. and so kde would take like 2.5 time as long about ?

why would gentoo be on there anyways?

yeah well knoppix is mirrored there http://www.kernel.org/pub/dist/

wow thanks a long time

yeah good thing I’m doing it in parallels

are you trying it yourself?

good question. i wonder too now.

is there a browser for X ?

firefox?

you mean for the terminal? if so, use links.

1min

how difficult is it to get games working in gentoo, say I wanted to install bioshock or something, is it going to be a massive headache?

X is just a API of sorts for de’s like kde, it is not something apps can run in alone

well i installed xorg .. and than type startx

if you want a fast browser you can use dillo.

moon`: maybe in wine.

wine an emulator?

yes

it’d be awesome though if you could run X apps right from the terminal without a de…

what i am looking for is a browser that i can use to edit settings in my router

erm, help clarify that, by emulator is it a windows manager like gnome or something totaly different?

moon`: there is also cedega which specializes in direct x games that work in wine.

links if you don’t have a de like kde

can anyone please help me ? I think the problem is simple, but I am probably doing it completely wrong

hey what’s the name of the file and where is it located for unmasking packages?

It’s not rsync that bugs me, it’s that I don’t know what rsync is being passed when it hits a portage mirror… what address, what options, etc

dillo is a really fast browser, but does not support cockies

kk well i am thinking on setting up kde lol

moon`: it’s a free implementation of Windows(tm) on Unix

or you could use whatever computer you’re on for this irc session…

i am on gentoo using irssi

look at your make.conf RSYNC opts. emerge –info

for irc

oh ok

so would you boot it up from a raw terminal via a command like you do for gnome typing #startx | or is it just a program you could run frominside of a wm like gnome?

then links is your best bet or some other similar terminal based browser

good irc client

not sure how it handles forms…

version me

moon`: run on top of a de/wm

does the router have a http interface?

Hey Guys, can anybody tell me a quick way of transforming a Maildir folder to mh?

kay, thanks. Once I boot into gentoo i’ll probably have some more pesky questions for ya

I am trying to cross compile OpenOffice, so it would be C++ I believe

vista keeps crashing on me, but I’m hesitant about using gentoo all the time cause I’m not that familiar with it, really only one way to get familiar with it though I suppose

moon`: that’s a vista feature

moon`: you’re new to linux? I’d recommend something like kubuntu first to get aquainted with linux linux is different from windows in many ways

linux is nice to you

i know gentoo is better. kubuntu holds your hand to much, he’ll learn more with the gentoo install documentation

haha yeah

kubuntu was great while i had it but then i realised ubuntu is slow debian basically

moon`: just stay away from the gentoo linux installer. use the gentoo manual insted

shouldn’t i have gotten the xmerge script when installing crossdev?

there is one thing that i do not get why using gentoo .. its so indepth to install

I’ve already got it installed my system does a dual boot, I just don’t use gentoo a whole lot because I get frustrated working in it not knowing my way around and bounce back to vista

i’m trying to figure a way to make a universal gentoo install sh for me

I’m attempting to compile iptables but it’s asking me to compile gentoo-sources, but I’m using a VPS so I don’t htink that’s going to work well.

you mind if I pm you real quick?

one that just emerges things in the correct order

How do I get it to not compile that?

and switches gcc’s when necessary (like for qemu)

more flexibility, more oppertunity to learn

moon`: you can speak here.

what’s the use flag to not include compiling gentoo-sources?

well that is true .. i have learned a ton

dunno ask the channel

on my next laptop i want to just make the partitions manually then install gentoo base and portage then just run a sh script
