but i checked this one, linked on your howto, today: http://gentoo-wiki.com/Apache_Modules_mod_php

Hi there. Does anyone know what evolutions “profile” use flag does?

i still dont understand how you have the module but not the conf when they are both supplied by php

equery uses evolution

I see. why emerge isn’t generating 70_mod_php.conf is a mystery to me but certainly the biggest part of the problem. might try googling (or ask #gentoo-apache) for a skeleton

http://genx.easyshellz.com/gentoo/etc/70_mod_php5.conf

i just copied a system from one puter to another, but now all my dependancies are being resolved as circular. any ideas?

i don’t either i read that. copied it already.

KWhat_Work, “Adds profile support to builds of packages (will likely vary from ebuild to ebuild in support)”. Well, that doesn’t say that much

restart apache and should be all good

alveraan, it is likely to support profiling.

Draconx|Laptop, ok thanks

at least i got a php-error now! yay!

you’re gold, congrats

it add support for multiple profiles. ie different profiles have different configs settings etc

anyone know how long it take s to emerge -av kde-meta ?

KWhat_Work, ah.. which can be changed on the fly so one doesn’t have to logout

and is there input needed throw the install ?

i dont know if evolution can do it on the fly but something like that

one can only guess WILDLY but probably 6-10 hours, give or more likely take 4

very different on many systems somewhere between 24hrs and a week

wow

How can i know from what ebuild is a file?

its been my experience that you dont eff with evolution due to the overwhelming amount of bugs. If it works dont touch it.

what is the fastest way ?

thanks, it works now :-D

equery d /path/to/file

qfile filename or equery f filename

sorry equery b /path/to/file

YES equery!

KWhat_Work, Yeah maybe. But once it is stable, it works like a charm

equery b /path/to/file. equery is in gentoolkit

er equery b filename

i didn’t rememver the command

emerge -1av kdebase-meta will give you a functional kde system already. then you can emerge kde-meta

thanks u all :***

which package provides the aoss command?

equery f works, after a while

will this emerge 1av kdabase-meta give me the graphical part of kde or is it still just cli ?

qfile /path/to/file is much faster, comes from ‘portage-utils’

please could someone who has aoss do an equery b `which oss`?

it will give you the desktop, provided that you already emerged xorg-x11 and some login manager such as kdm

isn’t it in alsa-oss ?

all i have done at this point is use handbook to install gentoo and emeger irssi

koollman, thanks i’ll reinstall

so i need to emerge xorg-x11 and emerge kdm ?

koollman, install even

not kdm if you intend on a -meta let it pull it in

that will give you a graphical login screen.

yo any1 good with recompiling the kernel?

ok so just emerge xorg-X11 ?

whats your issue

kdebase and kdebase-meta both depend on kdm

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml

on second thought, maybe not

jrup, look here http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/list.xml, section “Installing your Desktop”

one way it will block i forget kdebase includes it i think

hi folks. I have a FLAC and a cuesheet and I want single files out of it. Any hints for that?

kk thanks

hi all, what’s the simplest way (as in lite) to get a higher resolution console at boot? i’ve read the wiki but i get the feeling i don’t need 90 procent of all that stuff, i don’t want graphics just a slightly higher rez. (ati-drivers/gentoo sources)

hey can some1 help me with a make error when im trying to recomplie my kernel and my system time is being gay

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Framebuffer_Support

pr00f, what’s the error?

I ran the command to fix expat with GTK+, however I am still receiving errors when I try to compile it. I’m on an AMD64. http://pastebin.com/m7fbc9c1

ill nopaste oiit

tobi?

anyone else having expat errors on x8_64? x86_64*

Humm ok forget hp-check, I can print a test page from cups but I cannot get open office 2.3 to print using the cups printer. How do I fix this?

did you read the topic?

tomboy64, I’ve read the topic, and I’ve run the expat command mzbot will give you for gtk+ tomboy64, still getting the error

New nvidia drivers completely fix my compiz-fusion crashes, woot.

compiled OOo with USE=cups ? grep for libexpat.so.0 in /lib and /usr/lib, those need to be rebuilt

DCC SEND linuxusershaveneckbeards 0 0 0

chithead, I don’t have those… how do I go about rebuilding them?

“grep -r libexpat.so.0 /lib /usr/lib” will give you a list of files. the packages these files belong to need to be rebuilt.

killed.

I have amd64 so I’m using the openoffice-bin version

I have amd64 too and I use openoffice, not -bin

what is gentoo??

~google gentoo !google gentoo

http://www.gentoo.org/

^^

oh guess i thoiught it was masked or something

close enough

it’s not a file manager.

what is it though

ok, while I wait for program to compile; Why doesn’t GQView display jpg images? I have permissions and I’ve compiled with USE=”jpg jpeg png” options…

gentoo is a penguin and a linux distro

yo

r u all nerds?

Mantaar, :-D

disco?

yes, on amd64 you need to put it in package.keywords

someone ban that troll pls

??

http://rafb.net/p/v2shsg22.html theres the error ive been trying to get my sound card 2 work

the bin version is now compiled without cups though? it worked before

mladinov, you could ask serious/relavent questions

proof, where is the error?

http://rafb.net/p/v2shsg22.html that link

some of us are geeks, I’m sure..

maybe you are missing some other package. does downgrading openoffice-bin fix the issue?

Kyle was going to get it good. The big black sweaty beefy bodies were naked now… glistening. Their huge dick logs so thick and heavy they couldn’t even stand up when they were erect, they hung like logs, dripping pre cum and who knows what the fuck else. I think maybe some of them were diseased. So I’d have to take the kid to my friend the doc after this little party. Well, he’d have to go anyway because I was sure his asshole would b e ripped some and need stitches.

I can print a test page from cups that’s all know =P

oops wrong channel

also I can print from writer just not calc =P

thx, blackace…

yep, thx blackac e ^^

np

oh well if you can print from writer then the fault is just your OOo printer configuration

what error? read the log..

proof, sorry I don’t see any error in there

??? http://rafb.net/p/v2shsg22.html

proof, nope, still no error

Has anyone had experiences running glchess without gnome-games installed? I want it, but I don’t want that freakin’ gnome stuff, yet python goes totally AWOL when I try running…

that’s a normal kernel make/make modules_istall/make install

hrmm alright

How can I split a pdf into seperate PDFs of each page?

lol i think i cut the bottom off gimmie 1 sec

pdfsplit

I think since OOo 2.3 the printer settings are saved along with the document. can you print a newly created table?

try the pdfjam package. It lets you perform lots of crazy stuff with pdf.

can anyone tell me why gqview refuses to display jpg images (it doesn’t even see them) when I have permissions and compiled it with USE=”jpg jpeg png” enabled?

is it somewhere in portage?

wam, i’ll have a look

trying it…

good luck :-)

it’s not called pdfsplit, but pdfjam should provide you with a tool for that.

Anyone have any issues with wine running Steam?

don’t remember the exact name right now.

pdftk will allow you to split and merge pdfs

Well, that’s what I thought, but seems it’s not there , when I looked at it. pdftk will indeed be the better choice…

why can root play sound through aplay but nothing else can play sound even when compiled with the USE=”alsa”?

yes i can

thanks!

what settings do I need to fix in the old sheets? Is there some converter? this is going to suck if I have to change every document to get it to print

audio group?

ezerhoden, in it

so, good luck. never used it though, gotta try it next paper xD

open the document then go to printer settings, maybe some non-existant printer is configured there

ezerhoden, root can’t even play audio through mplayer using alsa…

I want to emerge xsane to scan but udev is blocking sane-backends…. unmerging udev seems kinda scary.. ?

ezerhoden, and alsamixer and alsactl work just fine…

is there an error message if you run “mplayer -ao alsa some-file”

@tomboy64: I’ll have to use it pretty soon. Gotta extract text out of MS-Word generated files and tex it and that in a script… woohoo… sounds like FUN!

stealth, yeah I wouldn’t unmerge udev ^^

no sound.”

hi, I experience this odd problem with xorg-server 1.4-r1, latest nvidia-drivers and kde 3.5.7. Windows, when being restored from the main panel, show themselves only with a little lag.

cool, “pdftk figures.pdf burst” worked!

tex

the restore animation is shown, then half a second nothing, and then the window finally shows.

sorry my modem sucks.. my error is

chithead, this is actually on a 32bit laptop

this is from plain kde, I suspected compiz first, but kwin shows the same symptoms…

chithead, I know confusing, but since these expat errors I cannot compile xchat (or use X) on the AMD64, so I’m using xchat on a laptop, also running Gentoo

not going to work. I have to re-lay out the whole stuff, including consequently numbered pages, sections and subsections.

just learn how to install kernels manually | cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel_name , and alter your grub.conf/menu.lst accordingly If you manage to automate that, shoot me an e-mail: wily@bur.st

stealth, this might be a stupid guess but do you have more than one udev version installed? (no idea if that’s possible)

how do i make 1 particular application install as 32bit instead of 64bit?

you can install it inside a 32-bit chroot, if necessary

Hello, can anyone tell me where I can find a url for fetching the stage from the internet?

X cpu usage pops up to 53% upon said effect

which stage?

how do i start chroot in 32bit mode?

i was looking in the handbook didnt really explain unless i over looked it

Google is your friend.

where can I get a version of ‘tail’ that would accept “tail +line_num” instead of “tail -n +line_num” ?

@wilymage: a co-student manged it and did it pretty well. I’ll use a c-proggie to extract the text and a perl script to munch through it with regexes to tag section titles. So far for the theory. I’ll drop you a line.

quit 123

write bash script? pretty straight forward..

menu.lst = lilo?

wilymage hell I’ll do it from scratch this is a faster machine

this only seems to affect terminal windows…

menu.lst is grub.conf alternative name

progo, no, that’s grub

nope grub, used to be called menu.lst, they’ve migrated to grub.conf but kept the symlink

proof, grub

tks, just went to that

I guess stage3 will bebest though 8 )

Yes. wget stage3 and portage snapshot and you’re good to go.

k how do i found out the kernel name that

usually I just call it the name of the sources, like linux-2.6.16-gentoo-r9 or whatever.

I’m rather new at this 8 )

you’re better off having a ‘new’ and ‘current’ symlink pointing to the actual kernel in /boot, I find

would that over right the one your using?

no, you specify which kernel to use in grub.conf

all my video players can’t run videos using aac audio, since last world update..

i know the kernel im using now i switch to the oldkennel but how do i differentiate

what is the command to mkfs reiserfs?

dealer, enable the a52 use flag

grub

the one 1 just compiled and the one that im using now grub.conf?

I see what you mean. Just call the kernels different things if you have two builds of the same version. Put symlinks like ‘new’ and ‘current’ in your grub.conf, then in /boot: ln -s kernel-blah-blah new That way when you build new kernels you can just change the symlinks rather than editing grub.conf every time

how can i fix that?

mkfs.reiserfs

chithead, is that on the mininstallcd? chithead, thanks btw

should be

just add a52 to your global use flags in /etc/make.conf and do a emerge -uDNv world

I still can’t seem to find a url for the stage3

figured it out now, for some reason when you are printing a file in the dialog it lets you choose 3 options, “print all”, “range”, or “selection”. I was entering a range and trying to print the range of sheets. For some reason on old xls sheets, there is an additional option under a button “options” that defaults to on, “print selected sheets only”…. this hidden option overrules whatever you choose on the main dialog. So no

-U%” works fine and shows all samba shares, but cannot find one link from //server box. What is wrong?

How do I set up Hg?

Trying to solve a couple of problems. #1, keyboard led lights. num, caps, and scroll lock lights are not lighting up. 2. Numpad keys are unresponsive excpet for pad-enter key. I just recently upgraded from xorg-server 1.3 to 1.4 and yes I have rebuilt my kbd driver.

releases/snapshots ?? distfiles?

ShadeS, are you reading the gentoo guide?

think I found it ..

ShadeS, *installation* guide

i had a issue with finding the snapshoot on one mirror as well

I’m not really following the guide persay. I’m refering to it in times of trouble The ones I keep finding are for networkless installs I’m not sure if doig a networked install will be ‘better’ or not

look on the canadian mirrors i think 2nd one .. there you will find the snapshoots

Perhaps following the guide would abate the necessity for you to clarify steps here?

what is a good command line mail client?

Last time I did it I did a networked install cause I ran the bootstrap script to do a stage 1 install.

pine

hello everyone. I am running compiz fusion on a Intel 965GM chipset. C-F starts fine, as I can see the windows wobble. But as soon as I try to minimize the window the whole system hangs. What could be the problem?

mutt, but try both

ShadeS, follow the guide, it is useful. Anyway, the dirctory is releases

ok ok i see what u mean

name a lot.. i’m going ot see which i like best

ill just name the new kernel kernel -blah blah-new

Had a similar problem with my NVidia card, but the latest drivers fixed it.

ok ok ok but the problem still is when i compile the kernel im trying to get to work with my sound card i get an error

Anyone have any ideas as to why I have lost my numpad keys?

wilymage, I am using the intel driver :-S

you could try disabling the Windows minimising effect?

i get those errors

wilymage perhaps 8 )

do I need to PB the smb.conf and the log files?

Maybe he should use genkernel.

The active vm could not be found how to fix?

wilymage,

Is there a good tool to crop PDFs? pdfcrop doesnt work somehow!

oh well, networkless it is then

what exactly do mean by ‘crop’

I assume he means ’split pages’

will anyone be kind enough to help me out?

is it possible to change CHOST=”x86_64-pc-linux-gnu” to CHOST=”i686″ and CFLAGS=”-march=k8″ to CFLAGS=”-march=pentium4″ and recompile your system so it could run on a p4?

NO

only have about 30 minutes left, can use some quick help, if that is possible.

no (and the proposed setting for CHOST isn’t valid by the way).

pdfsplit doesn cut off the lower border somehow!

TBotNik_g, you’d probably be better of in a samba channel

yo sorry modem went out again

kerframil, now that you mention it i remember that it isn’t exactly i686

comcast is frustrating me

aah, so you want to actually _modify_ those pages… uhm.. no idea :-|

open here and on #samba and #linux, but is Gentoo box.

but i under stand about changing the kernel name

yes.

but what do u do about those make errors?

tied “pdfcrop –margins ‘10 10 10 30′ –clip f1.pdf o.pd”, but it doesnt cut the lower border…

they’re make install errors, not make errors

is there a vector editor?

there’s no problem with your make, if you install your kernel as I suggested, you’ll be fine

well then rotate it and cut the former lower border

ok

i am having another problem with getting my ps2 mouse to work in X…i get “dlopen: /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/input//mouse_drv.so: undefined symbol: miPointerGetMotionEvents”

thats an idea!

and a couple more errors about failing to load the mouse modules

if you just upgraded to xorg-server-1.4, rebuild the keyboard & mouse modules again

did you try to recompile xf86-input-mouse?

now I get it… it’s just cutting of the empty stuff, not INTO the page

besides, the P4 acquired x86_64 support at least 3 years ago.

kerframil, i’m using a 1.8ghz northwood

http://rafb.net/p/GAlNgC70.html (Xorg 1.4-r1, latest nvidia drivers, strange lags with terminal windows and these messages seem to be connected)

chithead, thanks that did the trick

where is the grub.conf again? boot?

ah, you’re out of luck then.

proof, /boot/grub

80% of CPU usage and the delevery is much slow than clamdscan?

ok a compiled kernel copied it over and conf grub.conf i noticed a lot of dif kernel builds in boot how do i get rid of the ones im not using anymore rm?

proof, yes

or emerge –depclean

rm, also, I think it would be prudent if you read a guide on basic UNIX commands.

my kernels used to be called vmlinux i changed it to kernel name-new… that should be ok right?

as long as you have a reference to the new name in grub.conf http://mally.stanford.edu/~sr/computing/basic-unix.html

wilymage, looks like it might help, unfortunately i’m not using olive-gtk

Play nice then. Realize that there will always be users under (and over) your skill level inhere.

I can see what you are trying to do and, in order to do that, you need packet writing support in th ekernel.

yeah I know, was just the only patch I could find that looked pertinant

is there a good howto out there that covers closing the laptop lid as an acpi event?

I’m aware of this. I’m not new here. I’m helpful. I was being tongue-in-cheek. EOF

kerframil doesn’t matter now but i do have another issue

make sure your sound isn’t turned up too high.

add yourself to the plugdev user group then log out and back in again.

ah yea

I am still having trouble with random crashes when swapping virtual terminals. It doesn’t happen everytime, just randomly. Aside from installing a new video card, how can I diagnose whether this is a hardware issue, or software?

i forgot to do that ty kerframil

/dev/dsp will only work with proper OSS emulation. If you want to test alsa directly instead (I’ll recommend ALSA), do: aplay - /dev/urandom

beandog, well there really isnt much to the default.sh script I know I have messed with some acpi stuff before

rubiks120, yah that is a lot smaller than I thought.

beandog, I am looking at some of the scripts under events right now it seems to be that what happens in one of the events scripts gets passed through the default.sh script

rubiks120, right, when an acpi state changes, acpid will call that event name

yo no sound

so, you hit the power button, runs poweroff etc. or you can change it to suspsend or whatever

alsasound doesnt give me an error when its loading though i have no idea whats wrong

and the events scripts just call scripts in the action folder

right so I guess you just wanna find the event name for when you close your lid

you’ve unmuted before, right?

and script something in there for that case

when it says MM its muted right

yeah

im unmuted

gotta press ‘m’ in order to unmute

ahh aplay yes, I’ve had OSS compatibility for so long I forgot about that.

y is it not working ….

rubiks120, since the default obviously isnt working.

wilymage, i havnt seen a dail up modem in sooooo long

ok

* WARNING ***** You are currently installing a version of nvidia-drivers that is known not to work with a video card you have installed on your system. - so I need something older than 100.14.19?

I was following a guide off of the gentoo website to install xfce4 on my system after installing gentoo linux. It told me to do something with hald, and when I tried to do it, it says that it was not found. Can anyone explain to me what hald is and what I should do to get it?

rubiks120, Im fairly sure its a really simple fix.

I have a pile of a hundred in a cupboard next to my desk, heh

luckz, what card do you have?

meinzorn, emerge hal

4600

luckz, yes

meinzorn, hald == hal daemon

luckz, you need the nvidia-legacy driver, which, unfortunately, is only available through NVidia’s website

ok, so just type emerge hal, and it should fix it?

beandog, Im sure it is its just a matter of actually going through with everything, the ubuntu fix seems easy enough, I am just trying to work off that

hald is the hardware abstraction layer daemon and needed by some apps to properly work…

rubiks120, ubuntu fix? link?

that means manual compiling, or is there some overlay/similar that has it?

Mantaar, really? which ones actually need it?

luckz, it’s not hard, you just have to download the .run file and run it as root

what was the exact command you’ve been told to use

beandog, I dont have the link anymore it was on windows I have it saved as a google doc though

luckz, just a couple yes/no questions and it will compile it for you

rubiks120, ah okay, no worries

luckz, you’ll need to install gentoo-sources though

and I probably need to talk gentoo into believing that I have nvidia-drivers with a fake ebuild or so? why do I need to install gentoo-sources?

I was left with the impression that GNOME-ish stuff depends on it. Especially those that configure your hardware. But I ditched GNOME so far and I can’t tell you exactly

beandog, I can email it to you if you would like it

luckz, because the NVidia driver needs a kernel source to build against

I have a kernel source, but I’m not using gentoo-sources

luckz, the easiest thing is to just build it yourself… tricking gentoo would be… complicated

# /etc/init.d/hald start is the command I was told to use

what should i add to xorg.conf for a joystick?

luckz, do you have the kernel source for the version you are currently running, and is it linked to /usr/src/linux?

yeah, but I mean after installing it I have to trick gentoo to not want to install nvidia-drivers, no?

and then it said to add it to the default runlevel, which I also can’t do without having it.

yes, I have it and yes, it is linked.

luckz, then you just need to download the run file luckz, gentoo shouldn’t ‘want’ to install nvidia drivers unless you told it to…

so, it tells you that it didn’t find it? so you gotta emerge it. But if none of your software actually depends on it (which is the reason it’s not there in the first place) I wonder if you really need it. as long as xfce is running fine you probably don’t need it.

rubiks120, if you remember, great, if you dont, no worries

well, I am using video_cards = nv nvidia, that introduces the nvidia-drivers package as dependency

Mantaar, yah, I dunno, I just ignore it and let it do its thing.

how do i stop gentoo from setting RUBYOPT for every new shell?

I haven’t actually started xfce yet, that was the next step in the guide. I will try to start it without, and if that doens’t work, I will try to emerge it. I will be back with progress. Thank you for the help!

luckz, it shouldn’t be a problem, if and when emerge does overwrite your legacy driver installtion, you’ll just have to reinstall it manually… sorry anyone care to help me with an expat build error?

Mantaar, its probably, just not in the ebuilds, thats pretty common, if its for a GUI enviornment its goign to be so you can insert usbsticks/cdroms and have them automatically appear

how do i make it so a user other than root can use irssi ?

ok, good luck then. It should be as easy as: emerge -av hald

I just a while ago read in a forum thread where somebody manually installed nvidia-legacy-drivers and had to write an ebuild to talk his machine into not permanently trying to install nvidia-drivers I’m used to the default behaviour being that root *can’t* run it

row. That’s how much free main memory you have right?

(on non-gentoo, though)

luckz, on linux?

how do i stop gentoo from setting RUBYOPT for every new shell?

yes yes… but some other stuff too. I just know, if I use one ‘o them filthy GTK apps and it tells me ‘couldn’t connect to hal daemon’ I’ll start it and leave it at that. It’s not in my default rc since I hardly ever use it.

I am using root to run it now but i was to switch to a user account i created

on what else? :x

luckz, bsd, osx, hell there are a lot of unixes around,

well, you might want to move your .irssi/ folder in the home dir to that user

can anyone help me with an expat error? http://pastebin.com/m7e5e4774

this somebody could have used package.provided instead

The best b2evolution host.

what is the cp command to move that from root to user account ?

anyway I can solve an expat error without recompiling all the bloody deps of a package, which I might mention have already been recompiled before…

jrup, cp -v ~root/file ~user jrup, cp -v ~root/file ~user/

hello how do I find out how long a process is in i/o wait ?

you may also wish to chown user:users ~/file

thanks

Hi, I’m having a problem installing xfce on gentoo linux, can anyone help me?

paste errors somewhere that we can see them, or give more info.

is it something hald-related or did that one work out?

yes, it is hal related. When I try to emerge hal it states “You MUST build sys-apps/pciutils without the zlip USE flag”

hey, whats the command to properly update system

/etc/portage/package.use

Hello, what is the way to ‘reduce’ threaths on mysql? when I start mysql I have aprox 10 mysqld instances, I have a one database and I think that is ‘too expensive’, any idea how to reduce it?

emerge -uDN world…………. i generally do emerge -uDNav world try #mysql

whew. ipv6 works \m/

And when I do that I should be able to emerge hal now?

hey how do I to found module for my webcam a4tech pk-130 mg?

emerge -N pciutils google

It says no outdated packages were found on this system

Skunky I did it but I dont found

what package are glxinfo and glxgears part of?

mesa-progs

It says no outdated packages were found on this system

when i run gensplash, gdm(in the default runlevel) shows up on tty2 not tty7 and keyboard input is not working(I think it’s going to the agetty process on tty2(

emerge -av pciutils and tell me what it says

I want to emerge xsane to scan but udev is blocking sane-backends…. unmerging udev seems kinda scary.. ? what do I do?

It says “these are the packages that would be merged, in order: and then it lists the pciutils one

and in the USE thing at the end, does it have -zlib ?

yes, it does.

do I want to bother manually installing 97.55 nvidia drivers or are 96.39 just as good?

so hit y and let it rebuilt it.

Maybe you need to upgrade udev

I believe it said that I don’t want to use that flag to build the package.

mistik1, oooohh.. good call.. thanks

np

How do I have it build without that flag?

it says -zlib, RIGHT? not zlib, but -zlib

that is what /etc/portage/package.use is for, setting individual package use flags

paste the 1 line of out put from emerge that begins [ebuild R ] sys-apps/pciutils

:O rm -rf /

rm -rf / won’t work on Gentoo boxes…

Bill Gates discovers that women, unlike computers, do not accept 3.5″ floppies. lol

No, it says zlib -hal. I can’t copy and paste.

/etc/portage/package.use

Is that so

or better, edit that file and fix it

can anyone help me with a mzbot command?

? wiki slew secret of the universe

nothing found

gentoo slew secret of the universe

http://www.gentoo.org/

It looks like that worked. Thank you for the time and patients.

google slew secret of the universe

http://mikeschuler.web.aplus.net/index.html

Make sure you rebuild everything from “eix -IcC x11-drivers” i dont know how to do that

ah emerge -n eix && update-eix && eix -IcC x11-drivers | less

sorry about that, should work now

reisio, thanks. sorry, still tying to learn this.

the bot factoid might have mentioned what eix is :p

eix -IcC x11-drivers|grep -v matches|awk ‘{print$2}’|xargs emerge -v; should do it.

teach slew eix

No such faq

stupid bot!

heh

would it be faster to install xorg-x11 if i downloaded the file or use emerge xorg-x11

use emerge

reisio, i followed the link in the mzbot msg but it goes to a blog entry that mentions the update but not much else. thanks, though.

k i am doing that now but wow its taking like forever

don’t ever _ever_ not use emerge to install programs, if you have to, just make an ebuild for any program not in portage. it would take longer if you tried it manually :P

oh i see .. so is emerge the same deal as yum for fedora

yes but smarter

smarter how so ?

well sometimes…

i never had a issue using yum

not exactly - yum is just a frontend to rpm, IIRC

man emerge

kk

must not have used it very long :p

make sure to checkout gentoo.org/doc eix is a great search tool for packages. emerge eix && eix-sync

what package would i need to recompile if my usb mouse isnt working in xorg

ok, it worked to emerge hal now.. but when I try to continue to emerge xfce4 I get a different problem with gtk. It says cairo needs the X flag to set

x11-drivers/xf86-input-mouse

I have a Compaq Proliant DL380 oops not done hold on

ok, so, add x11-libs/cairo X to /etc/portage/package.use, just like you -zlib’d pciutils

i have used yum alot .. and for a fair amount of time .. just never realy had issues with it .. at teh same time the little i have used emerge its worked fine as well

I have a Compaq Proliant DL380. As far as partitioning, what do I need to do? Do I just create partitions as usual? What do I do about /boot partition?

do you think there’s something special about a compaq proliant dl380?

has anyone had problems with gcalctool and/or gnome-applets? mine won’t compile

ok i tryed to recompile it. my mouse still isnt working

Yes. I am worried that the fact that there is more than one drive that it thinks is one, will cause problems. I don’t know what GRUB will do…

euphor][a: if they have, and they’re responsible, they’d have reported them at bugs.gentoo.org

anything else i need to do?

does X start?

yes x starts

nothing in bugs, and I know 4 people, myself included, with the issue

just no mouse

euphor][a: so file a bug already

I guess its time to file a bug

my mouse isnt even getting power

…then it’s not a software issue, silly

it is im saying the laser isnt coming on

that’s a hardware issue.

which means it’s a hardwar issue.

the mouse works fine, the laser comes on when the mouse is activated

??

dude it works fine …

acid_, so it has power then?

yea…. it works fine on my lappy

you just contradicted yourself

on my other computer it works fine

wait. The mouse does not work one machine and works on the other, right?

acid_, lets focus on one machine at a time

im just saying the mouse works… its a software issue

bled

that’s probably a misconfigured kernel on the second. Still largely a hardware issue - or rather a kernel one.

not hardware at all then

i think this is a udev issue

euphor][a: not sure still. Could be a broken usb-hub. But I think it’s a missing USB driver in the kernel.

what is the module called?

there’s only a few options to enable to get USB HID working, dmesg should show if hub was found

yes

I am installing Gentoo on a Compaq Proliant DL380. It has four disks which are one logical volume in /dev/ida/c0d0. Do I just partition that as usual and have grub install to /dev/ida/c0d0? Which disk does the DL380 boot from, the first?

the module’s called usb-hid. But udev should load that automatically

It is still saying the same thing when I type that in.

does the number of packages differ in installation when you use the CLI versus the GTK installer?

what’s the output of: grep USB_HID /usr/src/linux/.config

jup, the partitions should be c0c0pX then.

um. it what is saying who?

hmm, im kinda new to dpkg in gentoo, but i downloaded a .deb emerged dpkg and tried dpkg –install foo.deb and it said /var/lib/dpkg/status no such file or directory. I also tried creating the directory and it said no such device. so i rm’d it

Y

I would think not, as long as you don’t opt to have the installer install “extra”/”additional” packages - which I definitely recommend you do not

anyone know how i can get this .deb installed?

you partition the disk before you start an OS, the array is presented to the OS as a single disk with up to 15 partitions.

what’s the package?

how can i identify my motherboard’s chipset?

reisio, papaya, a gtk MUD client.

So if I want a swap partition on each disk, I would have to create four logical disks with the ROM utility from Compaq?

1min

PCI: failed to allocate mem resource #6: 20000 @ 900…., he is using an intel DG965WH

reisio, sure thing

When I try to emerge xfce4 I still get an error that says cairo needs the X flag set

ok, grep your dmesg for USB related stuff.

if you want to use it as 4 separate disks, then stop using the driver for the ida entirely……

what’s the latest version?

you added cairo to package.use? you emerge -Nav cairo and it shows you it’s gonna add X to it?

since it is striped RAID, if I create a swap partition on the logical drive, it will spread it out over multiple drives anyway right?

oh nm

http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Image:Office1900.jpg LOL

it seems the person who contributed the ebuild at bugs.gentoo.org is a/the developer, so she’d know what’s best http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17108 wiki amy_ 3rd party

use the ebuild attached to the bug, follow the wiki directions

Hello.

‘lo Renfield

I was in here yesterday with a “Segmentation fault” problem. Various applications were crashing. It was mentioned that this was probably a hardware problem.

If I am using RAID 5, if I create a swap partition on the logical drive, it will spread the swap out over multiple drives right?

I did not and do not think it is. I was asked to run Memtest86+ for 6+ hours. I ran it for 9.5 hours, and it passed the memory test seven times. I also have running CPU Burn-in, which has surpassed 10,870,000 iterations with no problems.

in theory yes

Renfield, crazy CFLAGS?

thanks

what kinds of operations segfault? how and when and where and with what did you compile them?

I don’t think so: -O2 -march=pentium3 -pipe

ok, now I feel dumb. It is working. Thank you again. I’m sure I’ll be back for more help.

Renfield, Looks good, CXXFLAGS the same? LDFLAGS?

Well, I have seen the “caching service dependencies” script, depcache.sh? seg fault. Also ebuild.sh

ok my mouse still will not load up any other ideas on what i can try

Oh, here we go, I just did “cat /etc/make.conf” and got a seg fault.

usb-hud is Y in kernel hid*

I did it a second time and it didn’t seg fault. CXXFLAGS is set to CFLAGS, LDFLAGS is unset.

jon56, what about usb_ehci, usb_ohci and usb_hcd?

when u use the liveCD to install is it the same procedure as minimal?

it is if you want it to be

I started out with a stage three install, and did the rebuild of everything as suggested if I wanted a simulated “stage 1″ install.

good idea, IMO

test your RAM

i need them all y ?

jon56, build them as modules

reisio, ok, so if i made a script for my firned it should still run the same way?

As I said, I ran Memtest86+ for 9.5 hours.

how are cpu temps?

hrmm

Renfield, and this started happening after emerge -e world?

the only things I can think of that are different are…

I ran CPU Burn-in all day. Not a problem. I’m not overclocking this 733MHZ p3.

your friend would have to first start a terminal himself, and root is reached by using ’sudo’, or ’sudo passwd’, then su’ing into root

wow, that’s the nastiest steff I’ve seen in quite a while. Maybe your toolchain was compiled erroneously…

Does anyone know if there’s an ebuild for the video converter handbrake? I can’t seem to find one

This started happening after booting up for the first time after finishing the kernel install.

and the process to get online is slightly different

any cflag,chost changes?

what’s it do?

so Gentoo LiveCD runs fine?

or rather, what’s it do that ffmpeg doesn’t do? :p

I’ve already answered that as well.

reisio, poop, thats what i made the script for

heh

It has. It ran fine all the while I was installing.

for getting online?

reisio, converts almost every video format, with a GUI.. http://handbrake.m0k.org/

well kinda

depending on how smart your script is, it might not matter

it a realyy dumb script

Since booting “into” my Gentoo box, now without the live cd, it’s been doing this.

then it must use ffmpeg :p

just has him set stuff up

ok looks like i already have all the support options enabled so what else could i try

OK, then it’s not at all a hardware issue. when did you compile gcc or didn’t you do that so far?

Maybe I’m just stupid, isn’t a Pentium 3 an i686? I thought I verified that.

reisio, he cant load the minimal install cd

can’t you just stick to the minimal? ah, heh

pentium3 is i686.

like his box won’t boot from it?

to the best of my knowledge: yes

reisio, he has a weird motherboard

Ok, so I am using the correct stage.

sure it’s not just a BIOS boot order issue?

reisio, yeah intel DG965WH

well stage3 x86 chost is i486

I have CHOST=”i686-pc-linux-gnu” and I didn’t touch it.

what are your cflags?

reisio, i am not sure about boot order

GCC was rebuilt.

that’s fine and can be changed after.

don’t keep asking him the same questions over and over again

i mean my mouse was working fine before i emerge world

reisio, he cant even find his install medium

mind your own business.

http://xrl.us/6qz6

likewhoa, is it worth it.. its a p3 450mhz using it as a router

allocationg mem resource error

jon56, have you $ etc-update after this emerge -e world?

There’s a step in the install where you can do that pseudo stage 1 install by having it rebuild everything. I did that.

When was GCC rebuilt? In the chroot?

not familiar with that one

Yes.

wow that’s slow. but for a router is fine i guess.

reisio, yeah its something weird about his motherboard

yea works like a champ

ah, cheers reisio

and you’ve also tried to run the usual installation procedure to no avail?

what choice should i make when etc-update ask me

The usual? You mean without rebuilding everything?

-3?

jon56, can’t remeber what -3 is …

yes. Like it’s in the handbook. Booting largely off the stage stuff you downed from the net.

automerge all remaining files

heheh http://www.google.com/search?q=ffmpeg%20site%3Ahandbrake.m0k.org

I usally do -5 and look over the files it changed after

I’d use dispatch-conf instead of etc-update, personally

I’ve had bad experiences with chrooted toolchain compiles befor, though never _that_ bad.

reisio, so the net-setup script isnt part of live CD?

Hello @ll

I don’t think so - it’s certainly not part of the documentation

boooooo

didn’t check last time I used the livecd, it had a text file with instructions on how to use ifconfig

net-setup is still on the livecd.

i c

it’s always been on it.

which option in dispatch-conf

the ‘livecd’, or the ‘installcd’

Oh, so if I just install straight stage 3 I can just emerge -e system, emerge -e world after I get it stable outside the chroot?

installcd.

xTorT: question is whether it’s on the ‘livecd’

reisio, Do you know of any other GUI frontend for ffmpeg? CLI looks pretty confusing. I need it to convert videos for my iPhone.

uhm… I think you’ve confused me with someone else… dispatch-conf?

there are some good ones for mplayer/mencoder, which is about the same thing

sorry

actually the livecd as that’s what i normally use.

lol

how can i extract a windows self-extracting zip thingy on linux? can unzip do it?

juc0, there must surely be zillions of HOWTOs on this matter, google is your friend

not that I’m necessarily knocking handbrake - I don’t know anything about it, I just prefer the source, and CLI

dunno, you can try.

likewhoa, passwd work?

yes

which option in dispatch-conf?

to be honest, I _never_ did anything like emerge -e world. You should be fine with just the upgrades. Doing too much in chroot can really wreak havoc. Just try to follow the normal handbook procedure.

likewhoa, sudo passwd or just passwd

‘u’ for use-new, if it’s a conf you’ve never altered

sudo passwd

that will be the case for the vast majority

no problem, I was just confused ^^

likewhoa, do i have to sudo emerge or sudo fdisk

to gain root, just sudo su.

likwhoa ok do i have to set a pw first?

then passwd if you want to change livecd’s scrambled root password.

Ok, I’ll try it that way. Thanks.

like sudo passwd then sudo su

it’s optional.

likewhoa, ok cool thanks you made my script alot shorter

the livecd auto scrambles the root password.

and get boot into your new system as soon as it’s ready to take that. That’s usually when you’ve compiled a kernel, set a timezone, and installed grub alongside basic stuff like a syslog and crond. good luck!

so the installcd doesn’t include net-setup?

likewhoa, yeah, do sudo doenst even really do anything correct? other than make sure you want to do what you are doing

i don’t think i’ve ever burned the installcd.

so i just do u to every package its asked me like 20 times already

it did back when it was called the ‘minimal’, that’s all I know

To be clear, you mean you’ve never done “emerge -e world” or you’ve never done it inside the chroot?

yes

what we didn’t know was whether or not the current ‘livecd’ image has net-setup

Because at least you need to do that when upgrading GCC from 3.x to 4.x.

What file is it that bash reads on login? .bashrc or .bash_profile?

reisio ?

.bashrc

_profile calls .bashrc

I guess old habits die hard. I started with Gentoo when you could do a stage 1 install. So when I found that you couldn’t, I looked for and found the documentation to do the pseudo stage 1 install. I guess that’s not the way to go now.

no, I’ve never used emerge -e. It’s only needed when there’s a new major version of your compiler. or some nasty compiler bug.

so, I installed crossdev and then did crossdev i686-mingw32, but I don’t have the xmerge script, am I missing something?

reisio, if _profile source it, right?

stage1 is not supported anymore.

Users are strongly discouraged to do stage1.

yea i just realized that the other day

only developers use stage1 or people making livecds.

Yes, I know! There is the pseudo stage 1. Not sure what you call it.

my first install was stage1 :-D

you really gotta know what you’re doing with a stage1 tarball.

yup

It’s the install stage 3, then run that buildscript.sh or something.

eh just bootstrap emerge system,

Oh, bootstrap that’s it.

stage3 doesn’t need bootstrap.sh

but if its a system I want -Os on, I follow up with an emerge -e system

only stage1

i do stage3s now just cus my comps are getting slow

reisio, so it is .bash_profile that gets read first? then whaterver files I source?

heh, distcc

I’m not sure of the order

you’ll not gain anything from that if you don’t apply any serious customization to how the gentoo system works. So, stage3’s the way to go. You’ll have a working system in less than an hour. Including compile times.

can always check the bash source code :p

But if you want everything specifically compiled/optimized to your specific system, and not generalized to any x86 family of processors, then you rebuild it all.

yea compile gcc over distcc? glibc over distcc? hmm

can i have it make all the configs at once instead of asking me?

When an interactive shell that is not a login shell is started, bash reads and executes commands from ~/.bashrc, if that file exists.

you can surely recompile everything. But you’re better off doing that once your system is already running.

man bash says ~/.bash_profile is first, after /etc/profile

reisio, likewhoa , awesome, thanks!

It’s tough for me to get over just installing binaries. I came to Gentoo from linux web hosting from Scratch. I like having everything that is installed on my system installed directly from source. Maybe that’s just a false warm-n-fuzzy now.

/INVOCATION, if you’re interested

i used a weekend to get gentoo working

you can still do that with stage3.

my first time, and it finally boots alone

only do stage1 if you know how to fix your own issues. gentoo will not support stage1 compile errors.

Ok, I’ll try it that way, though your statement that you’ve never done an emerge -e world lead me to belive I should even recompile after I’m finished installing.

I installed a reiser4 patched system with nothing but minimal install CD in less than two hours. ;-) You just have to know your hardware…

*shouldn’t* But anyway thanks for the suggestions.

it was my first time.. i think it was good compared to the weeks i spent on red hat and debian

wow, it has taken me like 12 hours to get where I am (trying to get xfce working)

recompiling something isn’t that productive. Just be sure to have your useflags set and include –newuse in your emerge command, so everything that isn’t up to par is recompiled accordingly. Everything else… irrelevant. ;-)

Is dbus and hal support for thunar only good for displaying devices, or will I miss anything else if I compile it without those two use flags?

where do you get xmerge for cross compiling? I am trying to cross compile for win32

mabhobs, IIRC it work just like in GNOME

in what language?

lol! I needed about a month to get a seriously working debian install. But that was my first contact with linux. My first Gentoo install was pretty OK, apart from some Xorg issues. It took me an evening. From then on… installation times decreased exponentially.

there is like 200 packages can i have it create all of them at once?

with dispatch-conf, not sure you can use etc-update if you want to :p

sorry I did not understand.

how can you consider gentoo acceptable for production use when it takes an eternity just to setup a kde system?

i’m a slow typer, but i have not yet encountered any major problems on gentoo

just don’t come crying to me when you hose an important conf

it ask me to overwrite each when i do -3

‘production use’ and ‘kde’ don’t go together :p so don’t do -3

no production server would use a desktop :P

production use as in client office use

then yes.

you’ll get there.. ;-) in due time. I’m still not where I want to be, but on the way… just go ahead.

I suppose you could image a install, it just takes forevr with every single package compiling btw, server’s can and do use gui’s …e.g. w2k3 server’s and mac os x server’s

nah, it takes a day, once

woot .. i have x working

that’s not linux.

rofl, those aren’t servers :p

xorg that is

you got that right

i’m both dreading it and looking forward to the cahllenge ^^,

Can someone please tell me why my Gentoo shell thinks that all DNS IPs are taken? http://pastebin.com/d5dc5a992

now, _that’s_ exitement… :-D

Hi. Anyone know if ‘emerge –sync’ is just a wrapper for an rsync operation, and, if-so, what would the rsync command be? (want to create a portage mirror but only have a debian server on which to host it)

hey i was wondering how to unmask this package i know i’m just supposed to put the name in a file but i don’t remember where it’s supposed to be created or what it’s supposed to be named

heh, rsync ofcourse.

portage is open source… which?

if you want to create a portage rsync mirror checkout gentoo.org

halflife-steam

what’s your arch?

gentoo baxter_kylie portage rsync mirror

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/rsync.xml

ppc…

2.0?

I will say though that gentoo is surprisingly easy to setup

that only assists in setting up rsyncd… not creating a local copy of portage on a non-gentoo machine

(and no I did not use the gui livecd :P)

i just wanna get a dedicated linux server running for team fortress 2

Should I try in smoothie channel instead, or is it gentoo related? It just doesn’t dhcpd….

how does ‘emerge -ptv halflife-steam’ say it’s masked?

what do u mean 2.0

wiki baxter_kylie local rsync

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Local_Rsync_Mirror

gimme a second lemme check

3/w 12

same story

is just says it’s masked by missing keyword

how come gentoo isn’t mirrored at kernel.org?

they all assume you already have portage and simply want to share /usr/portage

would be nice if it was, kernel.org is a really fast mirror

anyone have a idea how long it takes to emerge -1av kdebase-meta

kde meta has 300+ packages to emerge jrup

any idea

I’m doing it now myself

just use rsync. read it’s manual.

wow so xorg had like 134 .. and so kde would take like 2.5 time as long about ?

why would gentoo be on there anyways?

yeah well knoppix is mirrored there http://www.kernel.org/pub/dist/

wow thanks a long time

yeah good thing I’m doing it in parallels

are you trying it yourself?

good question. i wonder too now.

is there a browser for X ?

firefox?

you mean for the terminal? if so, use links.

1min

how difficult is it to get games working in gentoo, say I wanted to install bioshock or something, is it going to be a massive headache?

X is just a API of sorts for de’s like kde, it is not something apps can run in alone

well i installed xorg .. and than type startx

if you want a fast browser you can use dillo.

moon`: maybe in wine.

wine an emulator?

yes

it’d be awesome though if you could run X apps right from the terminal without a de…

what i am looking for is a browser that i can use to edit settings in my router

erm, help clarify that, by emulator is it a windows manager like gnome or something totaly different?

moon`: there is also cedega which specializes in direct x games that work in wine.

links if you don’t have a de like kde

can anyone please help me ? I think the problem is simple, but I am probably doing it completely wrong

hey what’s the name of the file and where is it located for unmasking packages?

It’s not rsync that bugs me, it’s that I don’t know what rsync is being passed when it hits a portage mirror… what address, what options, etc

dillo is a really fast browser, but does not support cockies

kk well i am thinking on setting up kde lol

moon`: it’s a free implementation of Windows(tm) on Unix

or you could use whatever computer you’re on for this irc session…

i am on gentoo using irssi

look at your make.conf RSYNC opts. emerge –info

for irc

oh ok

so would you boot it up from a raw terminal via a command like you do for gnome typing #startx | or is it just a program you could run frominside of a wm like gnome?

then links is your best bet or some other similar terminal based browser

good irc client

not sure how it handles forms…

version me

moon`: run on top of a de/wm

does the router have a http interface?

Hey Guys, can anybody tell me a quick way of transforming a Maildir folder to mh?

kay, thanks. Once I boot into gentoo i’ll probably have some more pesky questions for ya

I am trying to cross compile OpenOffice, so it would be C++ I believe

vista keeps crashing on me, but I’m hesitant about using gentoo all the time cause I’m not that familiar with it, really only one way to get familiar with it though I suppose

moon`: that’s a vista feature

moon`: you’re new to linux? I’d recommend something like kubuntu first to get aquainted with linux linux is different from windows in many ways

linux is nice to you

i know gentoo is better. kubuntu holds your hand to much, he’ll learn more with the gentoo install documentation

haha yeah

kubuntu was great while i had it but then i realised ubuntu is slow debian basically

moon`: just stay away from the gentoo linux installer. use the gentoo manual insted

shouldn’t i have gotten the xmerge script when installing crossdev?

there is one thing that i do not get why using gentoo .. its so indepth to install

I’ve already got it installed my system does a dual boot, I just don’t use gentoo a whole lot because I get frustrated working in it not knowing my way around and bounce back to vista

i’m trying to figure a way to make a universal gentoo install sh for me

I’m attempting to compile iptables but it’s asking me to compile gentoo-sources, but I’m using a VPS so I don’t htink that’s going to work well.

you mind if I pm you real quick?

one that just emerges things in the correct order

How do I get it to not compile that?

and switches gcc’s when necessary (like for qemu)

more flexibility, more oppertunity to learn

moon`: you can speak here.

what’s the use flag to not include compiling gentoo-sources?

well that is true .. i have learned a ton

dunno ask the channel

on my next laptop i want to just make the partitions manually then install gentoo base and portage then just run a sh script
