I’m running Google Earth (linux binary) on Centos. Why is it so sluggish vs the winXp version?..
because it’s running via embedded wine. it’s not actually a ‘linux binary’ iirc.
Nope. It is. It’s qt.
eh? did they re-write it?
thought it was qt
3D is working?
the original was wine-enabled.
Nope, always has been QT on Unix (even on Mac OS). Nope, that was picasa.
Error: Missing Dependency: libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.4)(64bit) is needed by package fuse - How can i fix this?
ah, right.
yes
Then it shouldn’t be sluggish (though I can only compare Linux and MacOS).
what version of centos are you running?
Worked fine for me on a laptop with a radeon 9200 …
CentOS 4.4
which arch? i686 or x86_64?
Hello #centos who ever did that is NOT nice
x64
is this a hosted box?
yes
your hoster has screwed you over.
it behaves as if there’s not enough ram (that kind of symptom), even though there’s plenty of ram still available (I have 2 Gigs).. Everything that I try to move on it, lags behind.
well the hoster is my self so..
that dependency is provided by the glibc rpm if you built virtuozzo in or some other crap that’s why. it’s basically impossible to not have that on your system. The only other way (other than botched virtuozzo/hosted system) would be if you were installing a version of fuse for fedora instead of centos 4x
Strange. As said: No problem here on an AMD-64 3200+ with an nvidia card.
however, iirc, fuse won’t play nice with a kernel 2.6.12, so it won’t work well on centos4 anyway.
sad
I ll doublecheck 3D.. cause other than that both cpu load and mem usage appear quite normal… yet it’s very sluggish like it’s ..paging
use centos 5.
you were right.. 3D is actually not working.. [libgGL - direct rendering: no] how do I fix it..
Depends … Which card?
ATI radeon X300
Hmmm. What does “lspci” say to that card (the part with Rxxx is interesting, as that says something about the chip on it). If you are unlucky you’ll have to use the fglrx driver from ati.
passed the exam
I m downloading the ati-driver.. it says it’s for XFree86 4.3 and X.Org6.7/7.2
Yes. CentOS 5 uses 7.x.
there was a test? why wasn’t I told there’d be a test?
if you call a 7 hour exam a “pop quiz”, then I’m not surprised no one told you..
what test?
RHCE exam
oh congrats
thanks
did you celebrate by drinking heavily?
s/celebrate/prepare/
that was the usual methof of exam recovery at college iirc hehehe
I onlyjust got my results, but yes, the Glenfiddich was hit hard the examiner we had managed to break the marking system, so we lost 45 minutes while a RHCA showed up to fix it
bwahahahahahahaha classic.
turns out after he left that the RHCA also holds RHCE cert 806109000001 I’d been speaking to him at a BBQ about doing the RHCE a few weeks before, not knowing he held cert #00001
meh, he probably just printed it for himself once he finished fine-tuning the system ;-P
yeah…he got “selected” as the first one, but he had to pass the exam first. with 4 months to prepare for an exam that no one else has sat before. sounds like fun to me!

sorry, was just walking my zombie’d windows box.
what’s best way to upgrade from 4.4 to 5 ? yum upgrade ?
*best* is clean install + data migration upgrade is not officially supported and requires some fiddling with yum. this is covered in the wiki, and release notes.
hm thanks
reinstall
well, i need to create a Xen image i have 4.4, just thought there’s an easy way to get 5
there is. it’s not *offically* supported. see the wiki for migration instructions *easy* still requires that you read.
Evolution thanks
is apt supported in centos 5 (officially/unofficially)?
some repositories like rpmforge and atrpms have it. the distro itself does not support it. see wiki.centos.org/Repositories
ok, thanks the wiki says that apt is in extras though, which isn’t the case for 5 couldn’t find it anyway
right, in rhel5 yum has been included as the default. we’ve stuck with that.
ah
bugger
why? the two operate in similar fashion
I know
is ‘yum install’ or ‘yum update’ really that hard?
it’s just that I’m using apt on every other system
foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds
is there anything like synaptic for yum?
yumex
you leave my mind the hell out of this!
Ok, my local sysadmin want me to run CentOS on my server. I don’t really know anything about it which pros/cons does it have compared to…something i know (debian/gentoo/freebsd)
It’s RedHat Enterprise
mostly, it’s a free rebuild of Redhat enterprise linux. 100% binary compatible, with the same 7 year lifespan.
rotten old things like IBM drivers for RHEL work under it!
hmm - ok. But could you be more specific? I only know RedHat by name, never used it in real life *RedHat Enterprise
If your admin is recommending it… USE IT
real life is so misleading…
it would be polite to spend 5 minutes googling and reading the centos website first
bottiger, I use Debian on my desktop here, and we use CentOs for our servers.
http://wiki.centos.org/FAQ/General and http://www.redhat.com/software/rhelorfedora/
I say load ‘er up and give it a whirrl.
last time I whirrl’d, I got nauseous and puked everywhere. you whirrl. I’ll run the server.
can centos 5 do well with 2.6.16 kernel ?
why would you want to go backwards? centos has 2.6.18-x
but how does CentOS’ package managing compare to portage/apt-get ?
Evolution that’s hosting limitation, they load their kernel
it uses yum, which operates in near identical fashion to apt-get. then you get to deal with them for support
check - I think I’ll just try it then
we have no idea what braindead crap they build in if they don’t ship our kernel.
Evolution no problemo, just wonder if there’s any quirks
Evolution, oh my. I shouldn’t suggest whirrl then!
if there are, it’s stuff they build in.
this yumex isn’t really my thing is there any alternative?
I’ve added a second nic card to my centos server. Do I just add a ifcfg-eth1 to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts ?
6.5
depends on the goal you have: google: site:centos.org second network card
thanks
commandline.
ok
crap, everything I see is for X
what package contains libGL.so.*
yum will happily tell you. man yum, look for “provides”
I’m having issues installing mysql-devel using yum (on x86_64) it looks like the repo is having some version issues… http://pastebin.com/m435781c0
is there somewhere I can search the local repositories? yum search doesn’t return any irc daemons, and I’m hoping to confirm that with a repository
CentOS does not provide an irc daemon
right, I was trying to install one via yum - Does yum not have any ircd packages?
…
I think Zathrus just answered that.
you have a deep misunderstanding of yum.
yum with the default centos repos, will not have any ircd.
o — my understanding was that it was a package management system similar to debian’s apt or fbsd ports or gentoo’s portage
you may rebuild the one from SRPM for fedora 7, commenting out the fedora-usermanagement manual requirement in the .spec file, and the binary will install on CentOS … not that a sane person would do so …
I’ll go grab a tarball — Thanks! Just for clarification
I did not say that of course
what would you suggust?
you may rebuild the one from SRPM for fedora 7
it is vaguely similar to those. Just as with those, you must setup the repositories you want to look at if what you seek is not in the default repos.
building as non-root described at: you may rebuild the one from SRPM for fedora 7 oops building as non-root described at: http://www.owlriver.com/tips/non-root/
ok — But most repositories will be for another distro IE fedora — will they run ok on centos?
IE does not run on centos
http://wiki.centos.org/Repositories
ok, so what is so wrong about tarballs?
note that running an ircd is generally a wonderful way to get your system cracked.
hi, why can’t i chown a symlink from owner root to a user ? No error is shown, but the file is still owned by root…
it introduces unknowable changes into the package management system, which inturn lead tyo stale and vulerable binaries being retained in use
it’s for an internal network, with extensive firewalling — I promise ok — yum won’t update the package — I can stay on top of that on the other hand
booger your system as you wish — yould you please use another distribution so when it fails centOS’ reputation is not besmirched by your actions
looks like rpmforge looks good
great, so you merely have internal users cracking your security… note that internal leaks have now overtaken viruses/worms as a security threat.
Our users are not intelligent. Even if they cracked this system it has unique passwords
they were always a greater thread anyway
they get no where by doing it we have internal IDS also I’m not saying it’s impossible but it’s risk vs function we already have an arciac ircd running on win2k3 — this will be a vast security improvement At any rate tahnks for your help — I”ll give rpmforge a shot
is there a ‘force’ option for ‘yum install’? to install over on top of an existiing package (to fix it)
no yum –help That’s typically something you use rpm directly for
John-Hjorth: I looked into it.. didnt find something.. I remember rpm -install had that option i c
mostly, yum is designed specifically to NOT allow you to force things. because 99% of the time, it’s a bad idea.
lies. It’s much closer to 99.9%
… because it is not really a *nix like tool yum is part of the nanny state conspiracy please — not tee forked gcc
pfffft just give him dd. if he can’t do it all with that, he doesn’t deserve uid=0
screw it — machine code all the way!
hehehe 00101011000100010101000101!!!!!!
oh yeah? Well YOUR mama…
Is there a way to install centos root on LVM+Raid1? I’ve seperated the /boot partition. But the problem is, If I add a line in grub which is like. ‘/kernel root=/dev/mapper/main-root ro’ It can’t find the root partition also, I have initrd clause in the next line.
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-55.0.6.EL ro root=/dev/VolGroupSYSTEM/LogVolROOT works for me as a RAID1 LVM install
Ok, I’ll test this with /dev/VG/lv bbl
is that a lvm-mirror that you are calling raid1 or is that md-raid raid 1 with lvm on top
hmm, It’s a LVM on soft RAID1
mine is software RAID1 with LVM install on top
so is mine. I boot this succeed with debian. using root=/dev/mapper/vg-lv
i wish Centos had courier in a repository so i could have avoided all this headache
you can
http://www.c-corp.net/linux/centos/4/generic/RPMS/i386/
just use a proper setup instead who is that
hrm?
i dont know about that repo…
you mean Zerberus
why ? are you two not clones ? my {tab} seems to think you are
I don’t know the packager, think it is someone running hosting services based on CentOS
Imagine the mess if bash or zsh did tab-completition like your typical irc-client…
It seems, that raid1 module won’t be loaded at boot. How you activate the raid1 volume for centos at boot time?
soon be christmas
LVM on top of raid1.
I have a proper initrd containing the required raid modules
how do we generate such a initrd?
mkinitrd –help
well, vim does
vim’s tab completion is sane…
no implementation of “eager” tab-completetion can ever be sane, IMHO (this is going -social right?)
is there any headless centos install ? centos 5 i don’t need 6 cds
do a net install? but good question. i think you could install a minimum install from cd1 and take it frmo there with yum
hm good idea thanks i’m playing with live cd now
Could you please tell me what steps you did for seting up root on raid1+lvm? I tried just now, Not worked It always complains about no root find even with the initrd image created myself
right, if you do find out - let me know. I am trying to make an effort and bring in as many people together under one roof as are willing and possible for me to do so just to make things easier for everyone and to remove duplication of efforts
hm, the whole setup had been done during initial install, just using disk druid within the install process
I want to setup an imap server for my CentOS 4 any recommendations? I looked at Courier-Mail, but none of my current (yum) package repositories have it
but I am sure you can do everything alter without use of disk druid, as disk druid ist not much more than a GUI interface to the backend tools I recommend cyrus-imapd if you have a bigger user base and needs for advanced setups dealign with few users dovecot is good and a valid alternate to old courier
I have at most a handful of users I will look into both, thanks would you say dovecot is the simplest? (i.e. would prefer something that is very simple to manage)
yes. dovecot is designed for home/small office type usage. cyrus is larger scale.
sounds good to me
comparing cyrus-imapd and dovecot, then the last one is for sure less complex, though it already has a fair set of config options
mysqlclient14 I have mysql5 (server) running should I somehow educate dovecot about mysql5? or is this insignificant?
and feature courier does not offer, just like sieve filtering
hmm& % man dovecot No manual entry for dovecot is there no man page for it? or is it just called something else?
I recommend the dovecot wiki for a full scope of setup help
nice, already up and running
in order to rebuild the latest rt3 rt-3.6.4, I want to include DIFF patches with 3.6.3 how can I diff 2 similar GZ archives. there is nothing in rpmdevtools I need DIFF of file contents in 2 similar GZ archives to include patches in RPM rebuild
What is the recommended C++ IDE for CentOS? I noticed that eclipse seems to be the default IDE but didn’t come with CDT (for my install). I have since installed the plugin, but for various reasons it is running a little sluggish.
CHMEarl
i removed my /log/secure file. now i cant see any failed login attempts. how can i make sure it is loggin it again
you mean /var/log/secure ?
yes sorry trying a reboot to see if that ill sync bad logins with the file.
service syslog restart
thanks ill try that if it doesnt work when i reboot
why rebooting at all?
this isn’t windows. there’s no need to reboot unless you’re updating the kernel or possibly glibc.
thank you..
I get some problems with bug #62 of xen so I lost network connection when xen started
use fix #73.
Evolution, thanks Evolution, #62 status seems to be “NEW”
I have absolutely no idea what #62 is, nor do I care enough to look it up. mostly I was just mocking your obtuse reference with one of my own.
Hello HOw come #rhel directs me to here?
define “redirects” in this context.
the topic points you to this chan
the topic says come here if you need centos support
you need to re-read the topic in there.
Yes I know it’s not the “technical” redirect but does CentOS have a realtionship with RedHat?
no
humm ?
ok Isn’t WhiteBox also a respin of RHEL?
the relationship is… they are almost the same product from the different vendor.
there is a relationship, we directly depend on them for fluffery
how come that isn’t mentioned?
what isnt mentioned ?
lol
Whitebox?
Because RedHat has mean nasty lawyers
because it’s dead.
its dead, thats why
please troll elsewhere
Isn’t Whitebox a respin of RHEL similar to Cent? Oh
it just hasn’t had the good sense to stop breathing yet. But it’s dead.
I was just stating the fact that CentOS does not say where it’s sources come from because RH threatened to sue them
you were not in the conversatin and are speculating
dunncox; whitebox is maintained by just one person and is not kept as uptodate as centos is
umm yea, what orc_orc said
as I understand it, and this is as someone who wasn’t involved either, CentOS went above and beyond what was requested. and I shall shush now on the subject
snowmoon, Move it to #offtopic and bring some sources thanks!
z00dax:
ok, time to go home
bah, it’s only, what, 8 pm there?
on a day i was not meant to really be here, yes
yes, but I bet your boss was expecting you to be there until after midnight, in which case it becomes a day you were supposed to be there.
How long does CentoS support releases?
same as upstream
see http://wiki.centos.org/FAQ/General
have you read through the centos website yet? we wrote it for just this kind of preliminary question
s/this/these/
whats a good C programming ide in centos?
I like vim
orc_orc, nope but I’ll do that emacs!!
hehe I’m thinking something like bloodshed dev c++ on windows
you could try Eclipse. I haven’t used it though.
Kdevelop?
yeah, exclipse is too heavy
“too heavy” when talking about an IDE…
vim + syntax highlighting = all you need.
syntax highlighting is for sissies a real man would use vim on a hexdump er s/real man/real programmer/
s/vim/teco/
lol
When I installed a base system, and then, I use yum groupinstall to intsall the “X window system”
two simple letters for the greatest line editor ever…. ed.
oh, you mean like :h hex-editing in vim refers to?
But it seems, X server won’t be installed. any clues?
type the group name correctly. and select a window manager. like gnome/kde/xfce, etc
twm!
XFCE-4.4, I can guarantee that these packages installed correctly.
windowmaker!
did you configure X after installing it?
which command is used for configure?
system-config-display (which you may also have to install)
01): avc: denied { transition } for pi When I use system-config-display
then disable selinux. at least temporarily.
How to disable it please? *_* I just try to install Fedora by using chroot.
setenforce. this isn’t fedora.
oops I mean centos
I do have centos installed.
Evolution, ed ?
yes. ed. it’s a light-weight line editor.
I know you said two letters for editing bliss
correct. ed does this flawlessly.
lies. damned lies! it’s 8 keypresses — ed bliss
heh
dang; 9 — I forgot the return.
Hi, anyone here using CentOS 5 with ipvsadm ?
How do I get the patched source code for the current running kernel please
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/I_need_the_Kernel_Source please read the documentation
when I start gdm I got “no suitable security token driver could be found” Where I did worng please? also, gdm starts fine. I can see the cursor which is in busy state, and stopped there. cursor can be moved here and there. But nothing more then, a “black” screen
xinming this is a Fedora error
But I am now in centos. CentOS release 5 (Final) BTW, I have to mention, that my centos intallation is using yum bbl, try to restart. another question. which package should I install for making my fonts readable? currently, It’s all squares. [][][][] and locale is in C
whatever you’re looking at isn’t ISO-8859-1 then.
instread of a ‘half right’ install, and problems which are specific to being done wrong, please consider reinstalling on a wiped drive using anaconda, instead of ‘yum’ from Fedora binstread of a ‘half right’ install, and problems which are specific to being done wrong, please consider reinstalling on a wiped drive using anaconda, instead of ‘yum’ from Fedora/b
In fact, just want to learn more thing instead of just using the ready sollution.
has anyone had any success getting tomcat5 to run on centos5? with jdk-1.5.0 from sun
I have apache + jboss + jdk-1.5.0 I have apache + jboss + jdk-1.5.0
unless I’m much mistaken, jboss != tomcat5
ok, what is your error or issue with tomcat5 ?
I’ve just installed samba-swat but I can’t connect to it (port 901) from localhost or another computer on the subnet… iptables is wide open, so could selinux be blocking something in apache?
lsof | grep 901 see if it’s listening I get this as an error: “sun.misc.InvalidJarIndexException: Invalid Index” plus a lot more which I won’t paste here.
well smbd shows up there with the line “14901 socket” below the file info
and google is giving me no love on this error. no, it should show something localhost:901
hmm, so the service didn’t start
‘ps auxw | grep swat’
I added an entry in xinetd.d/samba-swat
ah, that’s right. scratch my previous ‘lsof’ bit, then
nothing running with swat in the name
is it enabled in chkconfig? ‘chkconfig –list swat’
heh “off”
tada
thanks
np
so I need to add it into an rc.d as well as xinetd?
nope
I thought xinetd handled that
Quick question
it’s already in /etc/services, xinetd manages the starting and stopping of that service on demand.
what version of clamav is in the Cent Repos?
ah, silly me… I made my own file and it had another by default! uah, silly me… I made my own file and it had another by default!/u
anyone know where the JDK rpm installs java? or a way to tell in CentOS4.5
rpm -qf jdk
no suck file or directory such*
after installing jdk, you’ll need java-1.5.0-sun-compat to create all the ‘alternatives’ sym links correctly
ah
which jdk? 1.4.2?
1.5.0 ls ack, mt
you’re doing it wrong.
?
I’m just poking fun.
wrong window with the ‘ls’
nm, the joke is gone.
ah, yea. lol how do i tell of the OS is 64bit?
uname -a
ah, found it 686, good o,0 i686 i686 o368 … which is it?
ah, I fat fingered the rpm command, above. ‘rpm -ql jdk’
ahh, there we go. liked that one alot more
but, you should still install the java-1.5.0-sun-compat rpm
(how did you fat finger f instead of l!?, lol.) thanks, i just did
so you don’t have to set JAVA_HOME manually
I have REALLY fat fingers
lol
and my brain was on autodrive for your next task, you must install centos5 and get tomcat5 running with jdk-1.5.0 and then tell *me* how to do that.
um, yea. I think i’ll pass
and bring back…. a shubbery.
holy crap it’s a ‘blind leading the blind’ session in here
duh!
Does anyone have any experince with PXE booting?
Cheyenne yes
what version of clamav is in the Cent Repos?
do *you* have centos5 with tomcat5 and jdk-1.5.0 working?
no one
it’s not. it’s in rpmforge see jpackage.org follow directions.
Gah! How do you automate that updating it?
I am trying to get a computer use a ks script with pxe booting
install rpmforge repo. run ‘yum update’
Hmm ok
lather, rinse, repeat
Ah Rpmforge I read sourceforge
Mm. In other words, “We’re not shipping a working tomcat5 + jdk-1.5.0 combination, even though it’s in the repo, and even though jdk-1.5.0 is what you get when you do a ‘yum intall tomcat5′” uMm. In other words, “We’re not shipping a working tomcat5 + jdk-1.5.0 combination, even though it’s in the repo, and even though jdk-1.5.0 is what you get when you do a ‘yum intall tomcat5′”/u
it’s designed to work with jvm, not sun java.
I missed the receipt number on your contribution tothe legal indemnification fund
feel free to keep your crying to yourself.
yeah, yeah.
How do I get to boot with a kickstart script with pxe
ks= on the kernel line
How?
is there a repo with both java-xxx-sun-compat and jdk-same version) centos and centosplus dont seem to have it, unless yum install jdk doesn’t work
just to be clear, when you say “jvm,” what do you mean? Which jvm? /me sees no jvm package, per se.
as centos declines to assume the legal risk to Sun without a way to pay for it, we do not carry it
fun
check the wiki or check jpackage.org or check Google
Does anyone have a good page on how to use kickstart with pxe?
the doco discusses, Chip S does, and this does:
Evolution, Do you know what version it has on rpmforge ?
http://www.owlriver.com/tips/ … many examples
look at ROCKS and how they do it. http://www.rocklinux.org/wiki/Installation_using_PXE we’ve got a few clusters here installed via PXE boot, but I’ve never been privvy to actual setting up of the ROCKS head node (thankfully)
I have one more question, How would I send a file with the systems IP address and time stamp to a ftpserver in the post.sh script?
wget will do it just fine
I said how would the machine that just had cent os 4/5 installed on it send a file to a ftp server with it’s ip address host address and timestamp?
yes? and wget can put files just fine
2 EDT 2007 i686 i686 i386 I’m confused, since its got 3 “i686 i686 i386″
is pcscd (pc/sc smart card reader) necessary if I have no “smart cards” to my knowledge?
which is it?
Would it be possible to save a machines ip address and timestamp in a file and upload it onto a server with a post.sh script?
I’m looking for a good java1.5.0 RPM, and all i’m finding it ones for AMD64 processors running 64bit, and not ones running 64bit on XEON processors
yes
How would I do it?
build file; put it with wget read the scripting in %post here and think a bit: http://www.owlriver.com/tips/tiny-centos/
man uname… it says what each one is. one is os, one is hardware, one is arch. i just forget which one is which
Evolution, can I search rpmforge ?
the hardware-platform shows i386 both machine and processor show 686 though
yes, via yum. that’s correct. i686 = i386 these days for all sane purposes.
Yeah clamav is kinda old
your point?
Hi! When I try to install kmod-gfs, I get package kernel-2.6.18-8.1.10.el5 (which is newer than kernel-2.6.18-8.1.8.el5) is already installed
what are the first 5 words of the topic?
1. How has that even happened, and 2. what do I do about it ?
Evolution, That I figured out how to search for a package
that’s 1 line?
what are the words before 1 line?
Ok, I didn’t paste.. I typed it, ok? Tbh, I read that as unless asked; max 1 line is Ok to paste You might want to clarify it a tad as it’s ambiguous
anyway, mostly gfs tends to lag behind the regular updates. drat. oh well.
good grief, guys.
we are very much anti-paste here.
please go read http://www.centos.org/irc/ please go read a href=”http://www.centos.org/irc/”http://www.centos.org/irc//a
sup, anyone know of a opensource software for like a howto? Like I want to keep my notes for easy access on the web interface. Where I type in allt he stuff I did. What I need is web interface opensource HOWTO stuff. or something similar.
any idea why courier’s authdaemon is giving me and illegal seek error
anyway, can you clarify “jvm” vs. “sun jdk”? are you talking about the gcj jvm?
jvm is the FOSS re-implementation of sun’s java. since java isn’t *yet* opensource. jvm comes with the distro, JAVA does not.
is RH shipping jdk, though?
no.
Hmm,
not really. just the minimal bits that they’ve reversed so far.
oh, my bad. stupid me. oi! It *is* time to go home.
May I just say, that I’m british by birth and have studied English for two years at university, and that topic *is* ambiguous, at best.. I’m sure it’s all on purpose so you can elevate your egos with kicking people who read it properly. But anyways, about that error message? Anyone got an idea ?
‘the nail which sticks up is the first to be hammered’
ok, so, I take back a bunch of what I said before as it pertains to Scientific linux hosting and not CentOS. Sorry.
Very wise etc, but how does that apply here?
the error is pretty self-explanatory. You’re trying to install an older version of the package over one that’s already installed.
you did not read — the message is explicit; you chose to persist in demonstrating obtuseness
Yes, but how has it happened in the first place? I’m not going to play the fancy word game, but no, it’s far from explicit (condition; statement)
then your bug requesting clarification may be filed with the RPM or the YUM maintainers, upstream … their bugzillas await
Personal java 6 web hosting services
nm, the rhel guys helped out, and I’m not that quick to file bug reports
then carp elsewhere
Hello #centos who ever did that is NOT nice
it is time you returned
orc_orc it is Hammer Time
btw (when asked; 1 line MAX) is a bit more appropriate to avoid situations like these (unless I’ve misunderstood the meaning again)
or change ‘asked;’ to ‘asked, then’ yes, it’s a few more characters
That’d work too
you _did_ read that page. yes?
gotta go pick up the kids guys, try not waste too much time on this.
nvm about that courier question i forgot to start the authdaemon really stupid of me actually
as a matter of interest, what does courier give you that distro included packages dont ?
cryptic logs.
an imap server
i can see how that might be a feature whats wrong with dovecot and cyrus-imapd ?
Shit.. the atmosphere in this channel is just.. blergh. Happy dick measuring guys!
umm.. what’s his problem ?
he cannot read and is a Tiscali broadband customer
i searched the package manager for imap and didnt find anything
he thought it would be ok to paste 1 line, and got chastised for doing so
he’s somehow special. he can a) break the rules, and b) be a smart ass about them.
dovecot, included in the distro is quite easy to setup, and works for system accounts out of the box.
noooo, he read the topic and interpreted “1 line MAX” to mean 1 line could be pasted without asking
the advantage of using that is, that your security and bug patches are much easier to implement and does not need much effort
which doesn’t seem unreasonable, since the usual objection to pasting is how many lines it fills up
how do i turn on yum autoupdates so that it updates every night?
depends on what version you are on
yum-updatesd service is on… is that not it? centos 5
there is a yum-cron package included in centos-5, on c4 and c3, its easy to implement using something similar uthere is a yum-cron package included in centos-5, on c4 and c3, its easy to implement using something similar/u
is there a standard location for samba shares in centos?
there are some recommendations in the sysadmin guide iirc
thanks
the FHS might have some guidelines as well, would be well worth checking
fhs?
anyone have a x64 RPM of java for a intel processor? the sun.java.com doesn’t seem to have any, which is confusing
Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (IIRC)
ah thanks
It doesn’t? Then what’s that link that reads “Linux x64 RPM”?
Lucky7 ?? http://java.sun.com/products/archive/index.html offers me such as ‘Linux x64 Platform’
i dont think sun support itanium directly ah. x64 as in not x64 but x86_64
cool, thanks
Wait, who uses “x64″ when they mean “IA64″ or “Itanium”?
iirc some of hp docs refer to ia64 as x64
HP. ‘nough said.
hi, can anyone tell me where I can get firefox-2.0.0.6 for centos 5? just the .tar.gz file gives me a libstdc++.so.5 error
2.0.0.6 only fixes a Windows problem. 2.0.0.5 is fine for Linux.
ivazquez, hi thanks. but what is the correct way to install it? should i install rpmforge or livna? ivazquez, or just download it and it will work?
You’re better off finding a repo that has it.
I don’t know of one.
ivazquez, ok, a general question. is it better to use rpmforge or is livna better?
AFAIK, livna doesn’t have EL packages.
Correct
this is confusing. rpmforge has a *really* old firefox in it. so there is no way to use firefox 2 in centos 5? i can’t find any rpms for it either
You could rebuild it from one of Remi Collet’s SRPMs.
is there ruby 1.8.6 in some repo?
i have a cgi quiestion. i am just setup BackupPC and the CGI script worked for root and not the user that was set for it backuppc if this is not the right place let me know
ivazquez, is it possible to just get libstdc++.so.5 in addition to .so.6 so then it would work?
“yum provides libstdc++.so.5″ should tell you if it is available on your platform.
range, thank you, that’s the command i was looking for
No problem.
range, brilliant, that was simple. it’s working now, i knew it couldn’t be impossible
OpenOffice.org 2.3 released (17 sept) — http://www.openoffice.org/ — Get it, while its still hot! PS. Tell your friends!
sucker.
hi I need to know my distrib name with a command…
cat /etc/redhat-release
thx a lot
Or lsb_release -a
i am on SME
lsb_release doesnt work
Yum doesn’t see any updates for gcc, how do I upgrade from 3.4 to 4.1?
CentOS release?
Sorry, 4.5
That version is available for 5, FWIW
So 3.4 is the highest I can upgrade CentOS 4.5 to?
No, there is a gcc4 available for CentOS 4 So the package isn’t called gcc, but gcc4 (IIRC)
right, cuz centos will update gcc from 3.4 to 4.1 froderick: centos (rhel) uses fixed versions for their releases … you’ll never see upgrades like that within a release
I wasn’t aware of that. That makes sense. So it looks I’m better off just blasting this machine away and putting 5 on it
froderick: a nice example … rhel 2.1 is still supported by red hat (well, security updates) … and it’s _still_ running with php 4.1.2 or something archaic like that froderick: if you can afford to blow away your system, then yep … go to 5
Our only Cent OS 5 server just bit the dust with a severe hard drive failure, and this one isn’t up to spec, so I was looking at options to upgrade it rather than reformat But it looks like reformatting and reinstalling is the most efficient plan.
that said you might want to wait until the first quarterly release for 5 is out heard that’s typically a good thing to do
Hmm. Any idea of an ETA?
not that i’m aware of
Why not install gcc4 on CentOS4? That installs alongside the normal gcc.
tho i run rhel 5 on my own server, it’s fine … i haven’t noticed any gaping issues
It has gcc4 installed, but I’m not sure what I have to do in order to properly make use of it. Do “./configure”, “make”, and “make install” use it as expected? Because when I do a gcc -v, it reports the 3.4 version
rpm -ql gcc4
probably set CC=gcc4
Oh, I see, I can get it from Yum For some reason I misread “base” as “installed” when I did a yum list | grep gcc
Yes, that is what I said.
I was trying to “yum update gcc4″ and it wasn’t working so well
hehe
Well that earns me a “FAIL” for today
bah, every day’s a fail for me
Also, on a separate topic, what’s the best tool for doing a diagnostic of a hard drive? I mean there’s smartctl, but is there any sort of sector-scan program?
badblocks? But *read* the manual page.
As I recall, badblocks involves a hefty beating to the filesystem
#centos-fr
But then again, the drive’s already toast…
Or use dd to read all of it …
If the drive’s smart enough to remap bad sectors it may be running out of spares
Yeah. Well, it used to be our CentOS 5 server, and then one day it started informing us that it was a read-only file system After we shut it down to bring it up to the workshop, it couldn’t find the file system journal upon boot Of course, today, I boot it up again and it worked fine for about two hours, now it’s back to the I/O errors. I used a Windows box for Seagate’s Drive Tool to check the drives out, one of them failed every single test
if you can’t find the journal, can’t you just mount the disk as an ext2?
It seems that the drive is failed enough to not make it worth trying- there’s nothing on there that’s valuable anyway I’ve never done any kind of drive recovery before, so I’m not familiar with that process
is php compiled with mbstring and mcrypt support?
not mcrypt to my recollection
sorry
phprpms.sourceforge.net
jut found php-mbstring just* i’m getting the noticed on phpmyadmin i’m wondering if i need mcrypt sorry i came here prematurely, php-mycrpt is also in the repos
i can su as user bob but i cant ssh in with user bob, how to make it so user bob can ssh in?
rickroo, user bob may be deactivated
how to activate bob? or check? i can su as bob ok
rickroo, system-config-users or usermod should allow you to activate it, i can’t remember the details
thanks
rickroo, yah you can su to disabled users, but not to users without a shell
How can I fake CentOS to be Redhat?
why do you need to do that
to install a rpm which is not supported by centos i want to install Arcserve backup on SME (centos related)
Have you tried yet?
I have modified the installation script without any success
Paranoiak, I just installed some IBM drivers for RHEL 5 on CentOS 5… no issues. I have though in the past used alien to convert to tgz and then I have build rpm’s out of that. I’m not saying it’s proper, and w/ ArcServ … Well, thats some mean proprietary code there.
yeah you cant download source over the internet i just have the installation cd
have you looked at AMANDA? tons of doc.
what is AMANDA?
for backups to tape. We use BackupPC for disk.
i have already some backup running with Diskarchive 2 but i would like to centralise Windows and Linux backups with the same program
amanda / backuppc - both will let you do something like this
totally.
we have already bought arcservbackup for windows
AMANDA has a windows client and BackupPC just uses plain ‘ol smbclient to get winders stuff.
so I dont think i will change Windows related files system I am sure I will manage to install this Cannot identify your Linux distribution or it is not yet supported. I just need to fake Redhat I’m gonna read the script
hey i have Q that i can not find answer for it’s Linux/C related
hi guys, is there any good open source “IT Asset Manage”?
popen is grep only stdout what i can use to get stderro as well
i am sure google knows
pipe(), fork(), exec*(), and another one that I can’t seem to remember.
Hello… Is there a way to hide all the loading text stuff with a graphical loading bar thing?
you mean the “rhgb quiet” boot options?
Possibly. I don’t know exactly what that is I just now did a minimal CentOS 5 install
do you know what the grub screen is?
Yeah
when you get to that, hit space then, you want to edit the second line, and put rhgb quiet at the end of it then boot normally.
Ah ok. So it will not show anything technical?
or, if the machine is up, edit /etc/grub.conf and append them to the kernel lines
it will, but a lot less.
Ah ok
also, you dont / wont have everything needed to make it work with a minimal install
I just installed CentOS 5… I’m making a StepMania machine (arcade). Basically it starts when it boots, and all that text… Don’t really want to show it if the system gets rebooted
send it out of the serial console port then as long as your app can still talk to the console it needs to
that rocks. you are using rhgb ?
Yeah I suppose so CentOS 4.5 doesn’t work very well… I mean it worked a hell of a lot better than shitty Ubuntu did That system didn’t know what to do as far as drivers went… The problem was the xpad drivers was too old and I couldn
rhgb is the progress bar boot thingy
do left and right on the pads… Apparently the newer kernel supports it Yeah I’d like to hide the technical stuff . The game starts through x on boot.. So if it reboots I’d rather have something nice to look at
My stepmania is on OS X at the moment, but the hard pad controller seems to work with no issues
when you have this working, send me an email with a story, we can publish it somewhere - the things people do with CentOS
Sure. Email?
my nickname centos.org
Ah ok Now in /etc/grub.conf… Do I just type that in on any line?
anyone here would tell me the reason, why will my CentOs not entering the system if selinux is enabled? IIRC, the message might be. SELinux is in enforce.. and blabla
turn it into permissive mode, login and check the audit logs
Ok, thanks
Now for my purpose… even with a minimal install… is there anything I can disable?
everything but X practically, stepmania ships with all the libraries IIRC
I swear there was a single cd installer… I looked and all there is is a live CD… sorry about the dumb one
just use the first cd if you want a minimal install
When we use groupinstall, why will it pull some bins from i386? eg, yum groupinstall “GNOME Desktop Environment”, It will install many packages from i386
wait… do I need to install rhgb first?
oh yeah that too
Apparently I do..
Got it Then I’m assuming I can just switch the repo’s to download online Trying to do a quick vmware install
Yeah if you do a minimal install (only base package) all you need is the first CD with CentOS 5 Anything you need after that you can install with yum
got it thanks a bunch Luke_S
np
because of multi arch. why yum matches both I don’t know.
How exactly do I setup quiet boot? Do I need to install rhgb first via yum?
So, how to prevent it pull the 386 version?
Can’t you do package.ixx ? err
exclude options
package.i___
Oh, Ok,thanks yay, thanks
put it in your yum config for no *i?86 evar
next question, rpm -qa will list the packages installed on this system, How do I ask it to list also the arch? I was afraid there is also a package which will be in multi-arch state
rpm -q –queryformat ‘%{name} %{arch}’ simpler to yum list though and yum remove *i?86 should take care of the pesky 32 bit packages
thanks, You made me like rpm a bit.
is there a way to not pull a lot of dependencies when installing some software ?
I confess that I always hate rpm based distribution.
something like use flags in portage for yum?
I don’t think we can do this easily, they are already packaged.
i mean not exactly that but im on a headless server and it wants to install ati video drivers
sorry, I’m a newbie also
Dig down into rpm internals and you’ll start hating it again rpm has some… quirks
xinming and the software i want to install is called ming
_ the windows X server?
no lib ming, its a flash lib
I hate my irc program… I need a better one
i want to make a photo gallery to my wife and it uses flash
the best is irssi
does it work for mac?
i prefer erc
If you are also a emacs user. try erc
No I mean literally Mac OS X I use that as my desktop and linux for just about everything else…
emacs works in macs also yes a lot of possibilities on perl scripting there i prefer lisp
It seems, we have to compile many packages ourselves in centos 5. _ No irssi. - -b
there is in dries and dag repos
Or use the Fedora build, or the http://centos.karan.org/ rebuilds
that i could check Public key for ming-0.3.0-3.el4.rf.x86_64.rpm is not installed and this when i had done rpm import the gpg key i think pgp*
BTW, is there a repository which includes the bleeding-edge software?
I think this what backports do.
Ok, needs to sleep, I’ll ask about backports url next time I come,
bye all
did i lost something ? well it installed without pgp check but if it is sane is another story isnt?
What is the closest to CentOS 5? Redhat EL5?
Yes the release numbers match
So would an RPM for Redhat EL5 work on CentOS 5?
is there a way to ignore the protect base yum module for a single package? like an override or something
dang ircle! sorry stupid irc kicked me out didn’t catch what you said I need a new irc client badly.. Anyway… I got a libmad rpm from dag for Redhat EL5… wondering if that will work for CentOS 5. Couldn’t find one for 5… only found one for 4.
it should, they’re supposed to be compatible
ok cool… bah I can’t remember the command to configure my sound card… had like two dashes in it and I did it in X…
system-config-soundcar d
thanks woops set sound too high for internal speakers… oh my god…
when we install the kernel using yum, and I found, I need xfs support to be built. so, i use ‘yum install kmod-xfs’ again,
When I had this on CentOS 4 switching resolution didn’t cause step mania to crash…. In 5 it does… That happened in Ubuntu…
It will try to pull the kernel as dependency, How to get rid of this please?
Seg fault..
you don’t. xfs requires the kernel. it’s a ‘kernel module’
I’m not sure what to do about this… It didn’t crash in 4.5
and irssi is available in rpmforge, see the wiki for additional repositories you can use what’s crashing for you?
StepMania under CentOS 5 when I try to change resolution It didn’t happen in CentOS 4.5. I had to switch because the xpad driver needed to be newer And certain fixes I need for xpad are only in the newer kernel
sounds like it isn’t able to handle the newer xorg packages. or the driver for your video card has changed from what it’s expecting. what card are you using?
But I already have kernel installed
It’s an Onboard Intel 845G chipset
Do I have to do rpm -e kernel –nodeps?
Which it worked fine in CentOS 4.5. I’m not sure what’s happening
not the one that module requires.
this is my sollution, But I don’t know if it’s right.
and no. that would be a horrible idea.
yes, that’s the problem,
I have the crash report but I’m not sure what to do with ti
xfs requries the kernel.
paste the output of ‘uname -a’ and your yum install command in a pastebin
and we have *already* installed the kernel.
then link to here. you have the *wrong* one for that module.
here? I mean me? Well… The computer I’m working on has no graphical interface so I’ll have to ftp the crash log somewhere
I’d recommend filing a bug with the stepmainia folks.
hmm, sorry, Now, this time, I can’t replay the error log.
huh? that makes no sense.
what is this:
But I really met that problem..
RageSound_ALSA_Software any idea?
that’s something to do with your audio.
odd.. I tried changing the resolution Oh just my luck their board is down…
without you showing me what kernel you’re running, or what yum error you get, there’s no way for me to help you.
I just installed CentOS 5, but after I get the screen that loads certain things (network configuration and that stuff) the screen goes black and I hear a PC beep I have an nVidia graphics card the screen never turns off… it’s just black… and it does not say that it’s getting a bad signal
][: sounds like your resolution isn’t set properly. is this a very new nvidia card?
So I am assuming that I have to install the proper video drivers from the command line… and I tried doing yum install nvidia-x11-drv, then system-config-display –reconfig –set-depth=24 –set-driver=nvidia
or a widescreen display?
yes to both questions
then yes. you need to enable the rpmforge repository, and install the nvidia driver, then run the command you gave above.
ok… I got this from a forum, but one step gave me an error
the nvidia install?
no… one second rpm -Uhv http://apt.sw.be/packages/rpmforge-r…l5.rf.i386.rpm (not with the … but with the full URL) it said “Unknown Error”
yeah, rpm’s http handline pretty well sucks. use wget or curl to get the file, then install locally with rpm.
and what also confused me was I tried wget as well, but it said that it couldn’t resolve apt.sw.be
wget http://whatever.com/rpmforge-foo.rpm rpm -Uvh foo.rpm then your network isn’t working.
while wget random-website.com worked… perhaps I mistyped… I double-checked several times
or the mirror you chose isn’t working.
http://apt.sw.be/packages/rpmforge-release/rpmforge-release-0.3.6-1.el5.rf.i386.rpm
http://dag.wieers.com/rpm/packages/rpmforge-release/
seems to work from here
that’ll work.
I would hate for this to have the same DNS issues that I had with Ubuntu about 1/4 of URLs wouldn’t work until I changed the DNS server to something other than my router
sounds like a router issue more than a linux issue.
perhaps… but Windows works perfectly
at some point, linux is just linux. the distribution becomes window dressing.
what should i do to install headers?
kernel-2.6.18-8.1.8.el5 kernel-2.6.18-8.1.8.el5.centos.plus — These 2 kernels, which one should I use?
for what package.
or, which is newer
Evolution generally
I’m going to make this very simple for you. run the command I told you so we can help you, or I can ban you from the channel.
where is the file that holds the IP address for the DNS server?
I’m sick of you only giving us half the information you need for us to help you. ][: /etc/resolv.conf
ahah… that’s it… thanks for the help
they’re usually contained in *-devel packages.
I’ll be back if it doesn’t work
if it’s foo.h you need, it’s usually in the foo-devel package.
You can refuse to answer, and I’ll say nothing. If you think abuse your power is a good habit of you, Just do it.
Evolution any special repo that provide more devel packages?
If you don’t want people to help you then that’s your problem.
I’ve asked you for the information we need to help you. You’ve refused to provide it, but you continue to ask the same question. how is this helpful to anyone. you’re simply wasting our time.
I didn’t refuse to provide it. As the message never appeared.
not unless you need the debugging symbols, no. bullshit. I asked you for uname -a, and the output of your yum error. those don’t magically go away. they don’t change.
not debugging symbols no, only headers to compile some things manually
unless you do something.
Anyone can give me the password of root in centos-liveCD?
I’ve told you I’ve done rpm -e ‘kernel’, and yum install kernel
you can use yum to search for what you need
you can back log
now im looking for zlib-devel
That worked, and the probelm disappeared.
I told you before that rpm -e kernel was a horrible idea, and damaging to your system. you’re an idiot.
it exists
‘yum provides foo.h’ will help you out too.
Anyone can give me the password of root in centos-liveCD?
\*/foo.h
one sec.
thanks a lot Evolution it worked
12qwaszx
I’ll try it, thank you very much
hopefully the next one won’t have a password.
It success but…, can I install it to my HD?
well i must admit precompiled packages are a good thing to have
not with the current version of the livecd, no. you can install with just disk1 from centos5 though. http://wiki.centos.org/FAQ/CentOS5#q1
whoa thanks ivazquez
thanks the link, but I want to know, can I copy the all file from to HD like install SLAX?
no.
OK, I understand now. thanks for you
Hello everyone
goodnight folks.
I just installed a CentOS 5 system.. and it has java 1.4.2 installed How do I get the new java? Is there some kind of package I should download? I’m kind of new to the rpm system
Please check the website before asking questions like that.
after changing my resolve address to 4.2.2.1 that whole thing worked and I got the nvidia driver to install as well (it said it installed, at least) BUT, when restarting, it said that it couldn’t start the X server
ok ivazquez.. bbl
the new java, I presume you mean a Sun JRE Wow I can’t wait for openjdk to be widely packaged
EL6 will probably have IcedTea.
anyone have any ideas? blank screen when X tries to start up (login screen, I am assuming)… I’ve installed the nvidia driver… i also did this: “system-config-display –reconfig –set-depth=24 –set-driver=nvidia” errr…. I am assuming that this was a typo on the forum where I got this from… he actually says to do “–set-driver=nivida”
May I ask what the reason is for keeping Java 1.4.2 as the default from the repository, while new versions have been out for such a long time?
Because the Sun JRE pre-OpenJDK is not redistributable.
Ah, I see
Having a problem… I’m tring to install these DRI drivers.. But it says “Compiling new agpgardt module… Compiling DRM module… ERROR: DRM modules did not compile. The DRI drivers can not be installed without the latest kernel modules. Installation will be aborted. See the dri.log file for information on what went wrong”. But I did run yum install kernel-devel
is centos 5 ready for asterisk?
is IRSSI not allowed in this channel or something? or did I have a 5-minute ban that prevented me from joining?
dangit I can’t figure this out Can anyone help me?
shouldn’t you be asking a specialist?
specialist?
if nobody can help you
It should be fairly simple… I need to build DRI drivers on my system…
whats that realy long command to check and change if firewall is on or not on centos?
is there a way using ” history ” or some other command that I can see the hostname or ip of the user who ran a particular command?
Hello, I am a linux/centOs newbie. I am trying to move to php5 from php 4.4.6. I tried yum –enablerepo=centosplus upgrade php* and it says No Matches found. Could I get some help with this issue?
php\* * was being shell expanded
I will try that, thank you. It says could not find update match for php*.
sorry, I don’t have a machine with php on it to check for you.. perhaps try just php, or php5 I’m not sure what the package name is in this instance
I have tried php, php5, php-5
CentOS 4 ?
How can I check?
cat /etc/redhat-release
Cent0s release 4.5 (Final)
ls
ls in what folder?
sorry i mistakenly typed here
Oh, haha, I thought you were trying to help.
if i can
Have you managed to install php5?
i recently installed throygh yum after installing centos, but i m not sure is that php5 or 4 i directly installed php5 it wasnt upgrade
“(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration” is the error message that I get when I try to start X well… it’s the very last line… and the only error message that I can see
Hello can someone help me with an installation of yum?
check xfs and gpm status
well, I know that gpm is running (when I type ‘gpm’ it tells me that it’s already running) this is an initial installation problem… I’m trying to use my nVidia driver no matter what I try the screen just goes black when it starts X up unfortunately I can’t get to this channel through IRSSI so I am forced to reboot to windows after everything that I try to do
Strange, irssi works fine for me
what is php called in the repository I can’t ever get a match for php
To install Yum I have to create a repository?
Get the yum rpm from a mirror.
right I’m following http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/PackageManagement/YumOnRHEL
how can i easily add mssql support in cento’s php stock install?
Does anyone know how to upgrade mesa? The one in CentOS 5 apparently has a bug in it
It says I have to create repository
If I use the vesa driver should it work with any and all graphics cards? ok… doing this: “sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86………-pkg1.run” it runs the program, but then it complains about not having kernel-devel or kernel-source both of which are present
that nick is utterly ridiculous.. and you’re installing the driver incorrectly
it could have been
http://fedorasolved.org/video-solutions/nvidia-yum-livna/ the only method you should be using
3D driver claims to not support visual 0×4b”
earlier I tried doing it via yum… did not work… but this webpage seems a bit more detailed I’ll give it a read I’m assuming that if I got CentOS from the CentOS website that I have a “Standard kernel type”… right?
I’m following http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/PackageManagement/YumOnRHEL Do I have to actually install a repository as the instructions say? Where can I get the centOS-Base.repo file ?
http://calcg.org/cgi-bin/forum.cgi?t=8154 that’s what I get when I run startx (I’m ][, if you were here a few minutes ago)
centos-release package
Okay so there are like 5 php.ini’s on this computer when I type yum remove php it finds nothing what do I do? If I want to remove existing copies of php / apache
rpm -qf on the files to determine which package owns them
is not owned by any package
Did you install non-rpm php packages?
can I just rm it, then? well I’ve come en media res to one helluva a messy server. It’s not mine I was asked to install a simple script on it, which needed php5, so I go to install php5 and apparently centos hates php5
CentOS 5 has php 5 by default, you’re on 4 I believe
i use php5 on centos4, it hardly “hates” it
use centosplus to get php 5.1
MY c4 *loves* php5
http://wiki.centos.org/Repositories/CentOSPlus
http://wiki.centos.org/Repositories/CentOSPlus/CentOSWebStack
Is there somewhre I can see an example CentOS-Base.repo file?
I already said the centos-release package
Well .. can I unpack that without installing it?
rpm -q centos-release
I use the –enablerepo=centosplus and it said no packages were found it centos 4.5 definitely hates php5
I’m on RHEL
many people in many places run php5 perfectly well on centos4
trying to install yum
if you’re going to say stupid things like “centos hates php5″ no one is going to help you here
devhen, sorry then, please help me resolve the issue
http://wiki.centos.org/Repositories/CentOSPlus/CentOSWebStack
well, actually I don’t need help resolving the issue, I just decided to switch to xampp take the cowards way out, since the repos were definitely not working for me
installing a package is not required, you can extract the file with rpm2cpio among other things
thats fine but xampp wont be supported here. a typical centos4 install is very easy to setup with php5/mysql5/apache2
I didn’t expect RHEL customers wanting CentOS packages. Heh.
ah! thanks you guys keep clamav up to date
if you really are giving up i’d recommend installing c4 from scratch (or better yet c5) and using the “official” centos packages for php5, mysql5 and apche
*I* don’t.
if you were to do that we could help you with any problems you had
okay So I want to install php5 how can I go about doing so yum –enablerepo=centosplus install php-5\* does not work
yum –enablerepo=centosplus list php*
how bad is an overwrote of /etc/redhat-release?
it listed nothing
it’s informational only, although I have known software that checks for it
can I make the assumption that backing it up and installing centos-release then putting ot back won’t be a good workaround?
Does that mean that my repositories are broken? That or centos does not have the package anymore.
the repo file only is bound to be public somewhere
hi, for some reason, my box’s date has been reset back to 2002. wtf? i didn’t even do anything, why did this happen? so now my next questions. what is the best way to set current today’s date with CentOS?
I guess so I’ll hunt it tomorrow
I don’t understand how I can get Livna on my CentOS box it always says that it needs Fedora whatever I’m assuming that I need to find a version for redhat
Okay I replaced CentOS-Base.repo
you don’t really as it’s a Fedora repo
do I have to restart yum to get it to know the changes?
no. yum isn’t a service.
someone in here pointed me to this webpage about how to install my nvidia driver with yum and the livna repository
okay so I replaced that file and updated it with the changed mentioned on the CentOSWebStack page
