euphor][a: xorg-server irc version 1.3 so the other one is better ?
tyler-wylie: check forums, I’ve seen that before.
hate trying to find it on links2 hehe
euphor][a: not irc
Guys, does gentoo keep irc logs/archives? because it is console? Try the framebuffer…
xorg-x11 is a meta package, xorg was split into several ebuilds, so just emerge xorg-x11 I guess it depends what irc client you use
euphor][a: oh now it get it.. then i unmerge
are there any guides to getting the pvr-150 to work on gentoo? the pvr500 guide is painfuly out of date
euphor][a: tnx
no need to unmerge anything
/msg NickServ IDENTIFY freenode
nice pass
emerging xorg-x11 will emerge around 150 packages which make up X, including xorg-server, just emerge xorg-x11 and you’re done
hey guys how do I troubleshoot poor sound quality?
/msg NickServ IDENTIFY freenode
space ftw
lol
remove the space at the beginning
and change your pass
no need no one wouls like to register krade
euphor][a: tnx alot
you’re welcome
you changed the pass anyway, so much for ghosting
lol
whats a good place to get docs? gentoo.org and gentoo-wiki.com are both painfuly out of date
/msg NickServ HELP REGISTER
lol there is no space/ its just /
i know i have trouble with my mouse copy past
hi i am in a livecd env. and i wish to get my wireless running. but it seems i need ndishwrapper to get it working. and emerge doesnt seem to list it. how can i find it and or install it
if those are outdated you have a problem
best to write the docs yourself and provide updates to others
im not confident enough in my solutions to provide them to others but the pvr500 docs, ati docs, even the xorg-x11 docs are out of date there used to be a simple v4l guide but i cant seam to find it
wireless on the livecd is… next to impossible. either stay on wired, or use a different livecd.
different livecd… blah i dont have a clean cd left and this one is a old copy. 2006
ssorg almost any wireless will work without ndiswrapper nowdays once you get the base install done + download the firmware for your card
tdr, surely i can hack something together to get it without a base install
how can I get amarok to play .m4a files?
ssorg you’ll have to find kernel modules compiled for the kernel on your livecd tho
tdr, its a bcm43xx which is there but its old i think and doesnt have the right stuff
|alexwait|, mp4 flag
tdr, its suppose to be included in the linux kernel from 2.6.17-rc7 7 UTC 2006 x86_64 AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile Technology ML-32
ssorg if it was built with your kernel + you you still need the firmware
ok how can i get the firmware on the livecd
ssorg, you can copy firmware to /lib/firmware
tdr, and where can i find those
hi, i’m having problems running compiz.. can anyone help? http://pastebin.com/m281eee68
hello. if I create a ntfs partition with gparted, will it be the same as If I created it via windows? or is it preferable to create the partition with windows?
sigh, still solving the expat issue…
mx-zoom the partition type wil be the same, sure. you still need to format it tho, and parted doesn’t do that. you can do the format in linux web hosting tho if you have the write packages
Has anyone here installed psybnc from portage ?
my question is. will it be the same as windows? if I do have the necessary write packages?
the 32mb boot partition is necessary?
whoa all my text in control center was just bolded
mx-zoom windows will read it sure. the only thing you need to watch (if it applies, which is if you are in a windows domain) is security labels lose context
valemon, boot partitions are not necessary, no
any ideas why? What did I press?
ok. thanks
although if you have none, might want to play safe and have your root partition as the first one
so just define a swap and /
valemon, if you have that few partitions, you might as well have the boot one it won’t hurt and it’s nice if you want to have it so that it’s not mounted when the system is online
hey would it matter if I was to use distcc to compile with a sempron64, and core 2 duo with different march flags? on each system?
I want to make a triple boot
ah valemon, well, if you really want to save on partitions, it’s technically possible to set up linux with one partition using a swap file
i just updated everything and it looks like i now have two versions of python installed, the old and the newer one.
but only do that if absolutely necessary, it might have performance issues…
can i remove the old one?
I am not really a geek so keep it simple
only if you verify that nothing is using the old one first.
Skunky, i suppose its equery time then. thanks.
Will I be ok without the boot partition? also this boot partition contains /boot?
valemon, the setup without boot partition means /boot will be inside root
/boot isn’t required, just suggested. as as nanonyme said, you only NEED 1 partition.
no problem then
guys this is weird. now when I close an app and start it back up allthe text is bold
how do i get vixie cron to run, i dont see anything about crond in ps -A
it’s just cron, not crond
Phocion, rc-update add vixie-cron default && /etc/init.d/vixie-cron start
well nothing about ‘cron’ is running, and vixie-cron was already added with rc-update on install i did the rc-update a long time ago, so should it already be running?
phooka grep cron /var/log/messages
1 gibson cron[4938]: (CRON) STARTUP odd.
5
ps aux |grep cron 0 grep –colour=auto
phooka, /etc/init.d/vixie-cron status
stopped thats freaky
phooka, start it
It should have started on startup
guys I do really need help
phooka, then check the status again .. it could be it doens’t start corectly
for some reason all my fonts are gay
when i started it just now, no errors
|alexwait|, you’re going to have to decribe your problem a lot better than just |gay” phooka status shows started now ?
for some reason all of a sudden all my fonts are boldened even though I checked the Control Center and ther weren’t
they demand equal rights
yup
lol
phooka check rc-status
but it’s super obnoxious
phooka strace /etc/init.d/vixie-cron start
loneradm, he’d have to install strace for that
lemme emerge strace
I switched from 32bit to 64bit and now I can’t mount my loop-aes encrypted devices. Are the gpg-keys not compatible?
for some reason sshd doesnt start at startup either weird
sorry back now everything looked fine…. and my sound is gone lol so many problems
phooka check your etc-update
gotta reboot brb
hello guys is there a way to find prebuilt package for gentoo to install without compile them?
uhm can i pm you some stuff idk what to do here
phooka how much “stuff”
6 lines
phooka sure, if it lets you pm
Hello.
hellp, where to get fonts like Arial, Courier, Times New Roman from? My KDE lacks it…
guys I need help before I go nuts. my sound is gone. http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-566866-highlight-poor+sound+quality.html and now I don’t have any sound…. I tried modprobing snd_hda_intel but that does not work
(WW) intel(0): Not enough video memory. Disabling DRI. is there a way for me to use system memory and increase the amount of video memory allowing dri on my hdtv?
cvance, did you enable agpgart in your kernel?
yes, but it is an intergrated graphics card
How can I switch the b/g modes of broadcom card manually?
it works when i am not running at a high resolution its only disabled when i have it connected to my 1080p tv but when i am running at 1024 x 768 dri works fine
whoa. *brain blows apart* I restarted my alsasound in /etc/init.d and what do you know. sound came back and with no crinkly sounds. hmm. that is totally weird.
ill brb, seeing if i can increase it in the bios
can amarok support m4a files?
|alexwait| yes it can
How do I configure networking so that I have one NIC that both DHCPs and has a static IP address?
/var/log/tcp.log” in crontab try to MAIL the info to me?
I compiled amarok with the mp4 use flag but it still says decoder not found
I have been looking through the Gentoo Network documentation, but I can not find anything that helps me out with this.
kk check use flags of xine-lib equery u xine-libs
you could probably set up dhcp normally and then do aliasing to make the 2nd one a staic, its got examples in the net.example
this files were imported from a legit cd in itunes under OS X
sorry xine-lib
[R]: Ok, I’ll check out aliasing.
equery u xine-lib see if aac is enabled for xine-lib if not reemerge xine-lib with aac use flag
what flag am I looking for?
aac
what package is tkinter in?
thanks
alexwait was it enabled?
no it wasn’t
radio back be sure to reload amarok so it pulls the updated xine-lib
probably tk myabe tcl
I will ^_^ thanks again
let me know
“equery b tkinter” didn’t find it? that’s wierd
just with having ssh installed in a machine, i can access it remotely? cause im having some trouble to do that…
btw the mp4 flag in amaok allows you to write to the id3 tags of mp4 files
maybe that only searches things I have installed
you need to check your router’s port forwarding chiiph
thats because it only works if its installed
:-/
how do i do that?
ssh runs on port 22 so you need to make sure that port 22 is forewarded to the proper dedicated ip hosting address of the machine that you are wanted to control what is your router ip address? your default gateway
[R]: Thanks, that seems to work. I was using two config_eth0 lines, as opposed to one line with two quoted preferences in parens.
hello all, i’m having a problem with my gensplash (i think), is this the correct channel to ask in?
i can ssh a computer from here, cause ive done that, but i cant do ssh to a friends computer…
“mounterror: FATAL: mount_local_partitions: could not mount a partition
you’re using the installer aren’t you
the partition gentoo will be intsalled is already mounted thw command line
the command line what?
installer
exactly
nope
the installer
text based
the installer is crap don’t use it
yeah your friend needs to have the proper port forwarded in his router
it worked thanks
it is bad righr
your welcome
ok… so, how do i do that?
that you guys for putting the kernel image and modules in a place where they can be copied off the livecd!!!! i jsut had to use the grub option i put on my server for using the livecd kernel. box died, but I’m transplaning the hdd.
if i changed my athlon 64 over to and athlon 64 x2 and thats the only change i made, would i have to make any changes to my gentoo install to begin taking advantage of the second core?
what router does your friend have?
the gui is just not good enough… the minimal cd is les trouble
should I open a terminal and follow the hamdbook?
you need to enable SMP in the kernel of course
IMHO, i’m going to start thinking of it as “safe-mode for linux”
valemon, ctrl+alt+f2
[R], good point
if you need more terminals, f1-f6 are terminals… f7 on has more to do with X
why do this? I mean the gui terminal is not ok ?
hey i emerged apsell and the enlgish but no openoffice spell check?
package X provides file Y. file Y is deleted. is there a way to restore that file without reinstalling the whole package?
thats because as i told you like 5 hours ago… its myspell, not aspell
any idea why powertop is only showing states C0-C3 on my laptop? i have heard there is supposed to be a C4
valemon, good point
don-o: you want to restore it from magical fairy dust?
[R], i was high? jk how do i emerge myspell
either one works
the same way you emerge anything else
huawei smartAX mt882
idk wat its called
[R]: that, or the leftover build tree
searchign for myspell would be a good idea then
http://azureuswiki.com/index.php/Port_forwarding
/var/log/ssh.log” works just fine….
don-o: that gets cleaned up after its being done copmiling
he needs to go into his router administration page and forward port 22 to the ip address that you want to control
[R]: usually gets cleaned up. just found what i was looking for. thx.
ok, than x
i’ve recently set up genslash using the wiki howto page http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_fbsplash but when i changed my resolution and frequency in the kernel options and rebooted it boots just fine it’s almost like the screen is having trouble refreshing at points where for example i type, new text is loaded, etc. this isn’t in x, i haven’t even gotten that far yet. any ideas? kernel options in my grub config file i mean

“emerge kde-meta” fails on “libical” portage with message “soiled library files found”, how to fix?
you need to show us the exact error message
r-wolf: that’s a qa issue, file a bug
exit
emerge myspell not workin [R]
at no point did i tell you to emerge myspell… i told you to search it
Search it?
the package myspell- needs a language behind it nl/en/de etc
yeah, like with eix
It’s not possible to append free diskspace to a partition allready in use, is it ?
well if you have free space at the end of a partition, you can just extend it if not, no thats what lvm is for
Does anyone sue root-tail
but you cant use lvm if you already have your partition
I have a disk partitioned in three… two of em aren’t in use, and Im running out of space on the first one .. I’d like to append the two others. But guess that can’t be done then :-\
so delete the others, and enlarge the main one
That won’t affect the data allready on the disk? (I’ve mounted /usr on it)
what?
is there a problem with the new xorg?
nope, works fine here
it’s complaining about my xorg.conf ..
OK, I’ll explain once more. I have /dev/hda1,2 and 3, and I have /dev/hdb1,2 and 3. hda is my system disk. However, hda is pretty small, so I took hdb1, and mounted /usr on that instead, to save some space on hda. If I resize hdb1, will that affect the data allready on there? If not, how do I resize it ?
ma7ybe you syould fix it then
[R]: good idea… but it worked like a jewel before…
parted can d oti dnno what to tell you
[R], without affecting the data allready on there?
of course
[R], using ext2resize … do I have to unmount the partition? Do you know ?
Hi, when i log into certain users on my system through gdm, instead of going into the gnome session, it goes back to the gdm login.. why ?
it’ll warn you if you have to like which user
my own and now that is logged on using root, and su - wilson, now i can’t get on root either
antyhign in ~/.xsession-errors
[R], theres 4 lines, but it looks like success messages
does it work w/o gdm?
[R]: yea
weird
startx works, but logging in through gdm, goes back to the login screen
did you setup a session with gdm?
yea
so you bootup and gdm starts, and you login and gdm dies? and sends you back to console
the new xorg can’t find my touchpad, can’t find my mouse, can’t find my radeon module. Anyone has any idea?
logging in root through gdm to gnome worked, but when i tried su - wilson within root, i can’t log into root anymore, gnome just closes and goes back to gdm
don’t use the newest
gnome dies, and just goes back to gdm
what’s up with it
mzbot explain new xorg uh pm the bot ‘xorg’
no response? teach rullie new xorg
No such faq
teach phooka xorg
/etc/portage/package.mask.
oh, thats ati, i’m sorry, i heard somewhere problems with new xorg
oh.. ok, thanks
try logining in to gdm with your normal user, then try su
you shouldnt run gdm/gnome/any wm as root anyways
security rick
s/rick/risk/
i can’t get in with my normal user
check logs
what logs
xorg logs, messages gdm logs you should have a /var/log/gdm file with logs in it
hmm, there is an error in the xorg log
has anyone in here ever had luck with the rt2×00 drivers? I really need to get them working so that I can use gentoo on my desktop, but they wont even compile!
theres a signal 11 server abort when i log in…
and you’d probably get more help in #gnome for this sort of stuff ;p
yea.. theres no one “active” in there :/
well.. google the exact error and wait i guess
mv your .gnome dir out of the way, and try to log in?
you know when you have a kernel config option specified like this - #CONFIG_PCI variables how do you go about setting that option, I am only familiar with menuconfig.
you can use menuconfig to do it (there is a search option). or edit the .config file and replace the line with something like CONFIG_PCI=y
don’t edit .config yourself, menuconfig, hit / to search if you can’t find it.
using menuconfig is easier, since it will take care of the various things to change to keep .config valid
Skunky, ok thanks, and thanks koollman
where do i find out how my wireless driver is called (to configure wpa_supplicant)
is there a pastebin i can use to post my error ?
teach Trippen paste
Use http://rafb.net/paste or emerge wgetpaste. Pasting in #gentoo itself clutters the chat and will get you kicked by Naamah. Use the aforementioned site and hand us the URL so we can check it out.
http://rafb.net/p/zDSlpY23.html can someone help me with this error please… and thanks Skunky for the pastebin
you’re installing
Skunky, i already did the install.. this is when i boot up for the first time and i run emerge –rsync
hi all, how to solve masked packages problem during building of custom livecd with catalyst?
you havn’t got valid nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf
Skunky, i use dhcp ..
so? it’s telling you it can’t resolve names, then resolv.conf points to something bad, or your network card isn’t configured right
Skunky, how do i fix it..
put valid nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf
do the new nvidia drivers add support for xorg 7.3 ?
Skunky, where do i get valid nameservers from ?
yes hence they removed the blocker
thx
One question, if I want that some program uses different shared libs (from another version) what is the way? I have two version of sasl and two versions of postfix, but all time two instances get the same libs, any idea?
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/path/to/libs
thanks
is anyone here familiar with apache in gentoo?
hi all, how to solve masked packages problem during building of custom livecd with catalyst?
#gentoo-apache
[R], yeah, tried there. s’just rather dead. I just need to rebuild the modules. but im not sure if that means i need to rebuild apache, or if the modules are another package./
what module
PHP
so then remerge php
[R], ill give that a go then, thanks.
[R]: I was tryin’g to use that, putting this on the top of the script, but when launching, it uses the same libs
dunno waht you are doing, but if that variable is set, it will use libs from those locationsfirst
where do i find nameservers
at your ISP
Trippen, use OpenDNS
how can i see what they are..
usually dhcp sets them
yea i am using dhcp .. but its failing to resolve at least thats what im getting from what Skunky is saying
Trippen in /etc/resilv.conf Trippen in /etc/resolv.conf
anyone builded a livecd with catalyst?
has nvidia/ati resolved there issues w/ xorg7.3?
nvidia did, a while ago
XaeroX nVidia has if you can use the 100.xx driver
ok I’ve an ati card and onboard nvidia for the most part, I have my ATI card working w/ the drives from ati’s site, the .39 drivers look like they fail, having tried .40 from portage yet (about to now)
Yo People Exaile Some of my Mp3s have bad characters in the file names These are all the Hebrew File names My Locale settings is set to UTF8 everything looks great in nautilus and other apps
weird problem here guys. I did a emerge –sync then left the room. I came back about 10 minutes later expecting it to be done only to find out it got stuck at 16% and it froze my whole system
hello
Is 2GB of RAM enough to compile huge programs and play a video game at the same time under GNOME or KDE with the usual instant messenger, terminal, and web browser open? all with no swapping?
what is a simple cli program i can use to change the channel on my tv tuner?
anyone know why i can’t emerge xgl, im reading the wiki on xgl and it says to emerge it but when i emerge it says the package is not there
any of you configure dnsmasq to send custom SRV and TXT records ?

anyone have a recommendation on a usb securiy token that works under linux?
you rarely want to run a linux box with no swap at all.
Skunky, ok, well, I don’t like the current amount of swapping my system is performing
well, you can change that.
sysctl?
/proc/sys/vm/
I esynched yesterday, updated world (which included Xorg update); now, startx returns “Requested Entity already in use” any one can help ?

I just got ahold of four Compaq Proliant 2×1.0GHZ boxes, and two 10-disk SCSI RAID arrays. Do you folks think I should be able to plug all of this into a home electric socket without blowing a fuse?
? computer can use from 50W to 800W fuxe can be from 5A to 32A … all depends
hey guys, does genkernel enable smp?
anyone had problems compiling gcalctool?
it’s not his work to decide that
hello, i’m having white screen problems when running compiz.. i get the error ‘couldn’t bind redirected window..’ when running compiz. tried the solution on the wiki but still no luck. can anyone help?
I think it is a 5A circuit. There are 4 disks in each computer, and 1.0 GHz CPUs, so I’m guessing it will eat up a lot of power…
safe P3s can use less than 30W disk power can vary in a factor of 1:3
I don’t know much about electrical wiring. How many watts is a 5 amp 120 volt home circuit?
my room has 2×16A; fuse blows only when I switch on my 3 servers at the same time, and put winter heater on the same fuse as comps; when I take care to put heater on the other fuse, I never have probs 5A 120V ? that must be USA … 120*5=600
OK so amps x voltage = watts?
in France, light circuit is 10A 220 just enought for a 2000W vacuum
and yes, it is in US
on paper, yes; but, compuer current is very special
P=U*I only for DC S=U*I for AC
you would ideally want a descent UPS on an isolated 20 amp 120 volt circuit powering those units
AC/DC Guns’n'Roses
the supply current, like 250w, or 350W for ATX is an average max; practical power is usually less; my bos has 350W power, and use only 120W; still, at power on, there is a 12A peak … for half a second ?…
those are the HD’s spinning up Motors that wind up need a lot more power
twice more expensive in copper !!!
The guy had some UPS’s for sale too. Maybe I’ll pick one up. And you are saying to just stagger the poweron to avoid spiking?
that should help certainly on boxes with lots of HDs
in practice, my “350W” computer only uses around 0.6A …
anybody know a good way to extract the kernel version from a vmlinuz without booting it?
rdev ? less ? hexdump ?
There are 20 or so disks for the whole setup, as well as 10 CPU’s
strings vmlinuz | less was a no go. whats rdev?
P3 can use down to 7W; Alpha can use up to 200W per CPU … (not counting chipset)
Just use cpufreqd to control power?
it will depend if it’s Xeon, mobile, D, 64b, cache size (cache induce power consumption), chipset speed …
Pentium III 1.0 ghz
what has cpufreq to do with this ?
Isn’t that how to control cpu power usage?
Time to reinstall gentoo, for 32 bit on a core2duo can I use nocona?
P3 800 mobile uses 7W; P3 server can use up to 120W just for the CPU, when my AMD 1.4G, including chipset, 4 video cards, and 3 disks, use 120W in the box
How do I specify a specific set of CFLAGS for a certain package?
wow
something like /etc/portage/package.use …
CFLAGS, not USE flags
How about a 7200 RPM SCSI hard drive as far as power usage?
changing overcommit_memory to 2 (don’t overcommit), made it much better!
I came across this site today, figured I would share seeing as we’re on the power topic, http://www.lesswatts.org/
there are scripts and a bashrc file… look for it in the wiki
cpufreq is a mobile utilituy for CPU with frequency scaling; Intel promised this to be ported to desktop in 2000 for 2003; it’s still not implemented in any desktop (more than 4y late )
Gotcha, didn’t realize it was just for mobiles (all I’ve had is laptops until now)
OK
so to enable smp i have to customize my own kernel?
or this: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-499881.html
not possible the Gentoo way; still, people can tweak using something like layman; it’s out of Gentoo officials; but, Gentoo devs have plugins for portage …
search dev personnal sites
OK.
it has been promised for 2003 for desktops ! Intel is just late in roadmap
http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_The_/etc/portage/bashrc_file == here it is a href=”http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_The_/etc/portage/bashrc_file”http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_The_/etc/portage/bashrc_file/a == here it is
Well if not with cpufreqd, how do I control power usage?
bed*
AMD neve dared promising such things they focus on computation power; Intel promised this to get friends around Greenpeace, save power, birds, tree, CO2 … probably ll never do it
The first link you provided was more useful.
amp meter, 5 USD in any electricity shop. Put it Amp meter, 10A~ section, (alternative), read the value .
weird problem here guys. I did a emerge –sync then left the room. I came back about 10 minutes later expecting it to be done only to find out it got stuck at 16% and it froze my whole system
http://rafb.net/p/WiCBhg26.html — what’s the deal with this and why is it stopping my builds?
yup, a Wiki URL sounds good to me
are you compiling as a user?
internet disco ?
no, as root
would it do that during a sync? it even froze my mouse and kde
hapened to me once … rsync came mad but, rather sounds a HW bug …
I am trying it again fth of it. so if I leave you know why
I esynched yesterday, updated world (which included Xorg update); now, startx returns “Requested Entity already in use” any one can help ?
sometimes while I’m tying in FF and Kvirc stuff is pasted randomly and in Kvirc I switch t o another app randomly
freeses are onfet due to bad RAM, or heat dissipation problems (fan, heat-sink fallen, something prevent air flow …) keyboard problem ? USB ? mouse USB ?
I guess so I do have a usb mouse
anyone know what happened to the xgl package?
would having touchpad and the mouse at the same time do it?
probably a better question to ask in #gentoo-xeffects
once when i worked as a roughneck in the oil field there was a particularly nice rig i was working on that was Diesel Electic like freight trains are and it had a doghouse with all the computer equipment in it and it had some serious air conditioning in it, kept it real cool in it
depends on the driver; bad touchpad driver can cause anything. Bad USB also can … except that, touchpad is unlikely to cause freese I had freeses on laptop; it was not mouse problem.
maybe I’ll disable my touchpad
any othe idea’s
rather change driver; I dont think it will fix
ah man that’s ok I don’t use it anyway I guess just commenting it out in my xorg.conf should help huh?
do as you want; I dont think it’s it. on a laptop, how hot is your CPU ?
how can I check?
acpi -V, or sensors, depends on your conf mbm and motherboard-monitor have also been ported from Windows
i would be too scared to do gentoo on a laptop, all that emerging would create a lot of heat, i would rather install slackware on it & be done with it
works fine here
what program should I emerge?
Hi gang.
|alexwait|, for what?
acpi sensors, esearch is your friend. I use gkrellm as GUI. Take good care about flags
eix, use eix
try cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/temperature
if CPU is over 80 degrees, it may be an issue; less than 50, it cant be the problem. If you add a RAM stick, it may be damaged (added ones are often a problem, especially cheap ones; also check your HDD status (smartmonctl). If your laptop is over 3y, it’s likely a HW problem.
no such file or dir my macbook is about 14 months old
Gotta new box. 5 scsi drives. came with ubuntu installed in 1st partition of one of the scsi drives. All partitions are identified by UUID. Installed gentoo on the 5th partition . Used the same UUID in grub.conf, but the newly built gentoo kernel isn’t buying it. Instead it suggests sda5, which would be ok, except drives tend to move around a bit. (so I’m told… Its not Like I’m swapping them in or out.)
my laptop have been my most powerfull box for 2y (until it dies). Even at compile time, I kept my CPU around 65 deg. At the same time, idle desktop was at 55deg.
So why won’t the kernel pick up the drive using the UUID from grub. (ubuntu does…)
ok, when new, my laptop came up to 92 deg; but I removed the blue slice between CPU and heat sink, and gained nearly 20deg
trying to use serial console, but I see nothing after grub says, Starting up …
because you did not ask him to ?
you know they put that stuff in there for a reason, doublehp_
well I thought I did. kernel /kernel-2.6.22-gentoo-r5 root=UUID=0b657ecb-3a53-408d-8555-c04
anyone having problems updating gcalctool and gnome-media?
seems its broken
ah, mac … I dont know macs. They have specific problems I am not aware. My XP is on x86; my XP is unlikely to be revealant for you.
not sure what this question mark is for. http://dpaste.com/20477/
word wrap got me
it’s because I know those reasons I remove it !!!
kernel /kernel-2.6.22-gentoo-r5 root=UUID=0b657ecb-3a53-408d-8555-c04b040e6e34
thermal paste?
Anyone tried liquid nails?
I don’t see acpi sensors
I sometime put paste in place; but, blue slices are VERY BAD
perhaps have a look at gentoo-ppc related channels
i think it was one of ubuntu’s biggest blunder was when they implemented that UUID systemwide in fstab and grub
#gentoo seems to be a pool of well-intentioned misdirection
yeah, i would imagine thermal paste is better
doublehp, kernel is a she…

so what I do emerge to check my cpu and HD temps?
Wallace’s favorite. Actually saw some at a farm stand in Littleton, Ma.
hdtemp
MICA or plastic, slices have fixed thickness; paste is compressable, thus, heat sink can be way closer to pad than using slices. The advantage of slices is to provide voltage isolation, what os NOT required in computing. It’s required for TV, 220V switching … not computers
and maybe lmsensors for cpu
I said acpi, hddtemp smartmonctl, sensors …
I got ksensor which brought that in and everything worked it seems but I do not see the temp
your distro have a documentation, with a section dedicated to mobile computing, with revealant peaces of advice
i think the most voltage in a motherboard is 12V DC
Pig_pen, right now its causing me fits, but I’d rather grok the change than complain.
gkrellm is a fronthead for those? Nicely selected flags will help a lot.
doublehp_: Seriously, take it to /msg or one of the hardware channels on freenode. #gentoo is not ##hardware.
my desktop have 5 heat sensors; laptops have even more …
ok, astinus, i be quiet
are you 200% sure your ksersor monitors them all ? it’s 20mn I am waiting for people to help me at Xorg; so, as long as xorg s broken, I have time to loose.
lose it elsewhere
I v nothing else to do.
and I told you #gentoo needs to stay on topic. Join ##otw or #gentoo-chat if you want to banter.
“Requested Entity already in use” ?
I’m trying to update MythTV to 0.20.2, but having issues.. system is AMD64, when it compiles, it seems to pick up the x86_64 gcc, but it picks up the i686 ld… anyone have any pointers?
try searching http://bugs.gentoo.org/ or http://forums.gentoo.org/ if you haven’t as well
If I was to set xdm to run at startup, would that make it more difficult (impossible) to run keychain? or would I just have to make sure that keychain wasn’t trying to automatically load password protected keys

anyone built gcalctool-5.9.14 successfully?
probably a bad kernel… no support for scsi controller.
Man, the wiki page on installing 3rd party ebuilds is not proving to be helpful at all. I’ve downloaded an ebuild file from kde-apps.org but I can’t figure out how to emerge it. Can anybody tell me how I’d do this?
faq wiki
Wikis can be edited by anyone, including the uninformed and malicious. http://www.gentoo-wiki.com is a great resource, but is not endorsed or supported by us so we may ask you to go read the official documentation. (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/list.xml) (deface is usually online and can be poked for help if the wiki goes down)
Yes, thank you, got it. -.-
initrd required; setting it up takes hours to configure. Likely not a kernel problem
So, how does one emerge from a local ebuild file?
Does ircii support unicode?
does emerge kde include at least some kde apps?
knowing kde many apps
depends on your USE flags
That should get you a “full, ready to use KDE computer!”
k
try asking #irssi too
Can anybody tell me how to emerge from an ebuild file I have downloaded?
so, anyone having problems updating gnome packages? I seem alone here
ok.. unmerging cross-i686-pc-linux-gnu/(binutils/gcc), I was able to get MythTV to compile.. anyone know why it would default to the cross-compiling stuff?
you shall emerge it with the absolute path
!mzbot local portage
It doesn’t want to do that. I assume you mean “emerge ‘/home/james/thefile.ebuild’”
don’t emerge with absolute path, put it in a portage overlay !mzbot portage overlay
euphor][a: Aha! that’s what the wiki said to do! And I’ve tried to make a local overlay for myself, but it doesn’t like that!
Is there a way to find prebuilt package for gentoo to install without compile them?
hi everyone
y. try without any quote _’_ may be the trouble
you need to define an overlay in /etc/make.conf (look for a line that says /usr/local/portage) essentially it will need to go in /usr/local/portage/foo-bar/foo.ebuild, then portage will pick it up
but … pasting the REAL error message would be VERY MUCH helpfull ! “my cat is ill” is not really informative; but “my cat vomits blue liquids” is way more precise.
guys, can i play .3gp files in mplayer? (and if i can, what should i do to make mplayer able to play that format)
y
euphor][a: Oh, I see. I added an extra several steps it seems. I made a PORTDIR_OVERLAY=”/usr/local/portage/james” and made the directory there and… lol, I made a mountain out of a molehill.
euphor][a, can one use an overlay to install things the old fasion way ./configure make make install?
emerge -vp mplayer; see the flags, add the right ones, recompile
doublehp_, hints?
ALWAYS emerge -v, and ALWAYS euse -i on all of them then: emerge -DaNuv world
amrwb and amrn?
compiling apps manually isn’t advised, it is best to create an ebuild — doing it manually doesn’t require an overlay, simply extract, compile, install
i would think if mplay can’t play it, give up system bogged down, cany’t type right, bbl
[ebuild R ] media-video/mplayer-1.0_rc1_p20070824 USE=”3dnow 3dnowext X a52 aac aalib alsa amrnb amrwb bidi bl cddb cdparanoia cpudetection dga doc dts dv dvb dvd enca encode esd fbcon ftp ggi gif gtk iconv ipv6 jack jpeg libcaca lirc live lzo mad md5sum mmx mmxext mp2 mp3 musepack nas openal opengl oss png pnm qu icktime radio rar real rtc samba sdl speex srt sse svga teletext tga theora tivo truetype unicode v4l v4l2 vidix vorbis win32codecs x264 xanim xinerama xv xvid xvmc zoran
euphor][a, I was trying to avoid writing ebuil without messing with portage tree
you have quite a lot options activated there
what I must install so konqueror display images preview?
use an overlay..
my mplayer can play almost anything I have read euse -i for 99% FLAGS of Gentoo
doublehp_, i can see why now
is it possible to select extended 3dnow via make.conf, in the same manner as sse? (mfpmath=ssemfpmath=3dnowext)
creating an ebuild isn’t too cumbersome, and won’t mess up portage, you can safely test ebuilds using an overlay
even for the ones that seem to be meaningfull; it happened their meaning was not what I thought. y man gcc
j http://blog.chris.de/archives/22_Nokias_3gp_Files.html even — Google is your friend
in fact konqueror was displaying previews before, then I changed the max file size to 2.5Mb. and it stopped.. notice, this folders with images were displayed on Slackware. and my ~/.kde is also from slackware.
wilymage_, i reemerge now, and if doesn’t work, i’ll try your solution, ok?
search doublehp in Google.video; in the comment of the most stupid video, you will find the commands to export 3gp
whatever you think
euphor][a, are they prebuilt package avaible for package listed in portage?
does anyone know a possibility to mute/increase/decrease the sound volume in a terminal? it has to be a command so i can map it to a key
doublehp_,
alsamiwer
alsamixer is interactive
doublehp_, alsamixer
and N ?
some packages offer -bin options, such as firefox-bin, these are pre-built binaries
for the konqueror issue, you might have better results in #gentoo-desktop or #kde
N?
Fieldy, hum.. thanks
alsamiwer works in a terminal, and it is what you asked for
use amixer, like amixer set Master mute that’s command line, as opposed to alsamixer, which is ncurses-based
exactly
File Type Major Brand: 3GPP Profile 4 avisynth.dll, /usr/lib/win32/avisynth.dll, /usr/local/lib/win32/avisynth.dl
still: works in a terminal wilymage want non interactiev ? “amixer -c ${ALSA_DEVICE} set Master 3%+”
thanks
thats the script binded to some button on my IR remote in your case, the variable may be 0 or 1; in any canse, man alsamiwer helps
man I love compiz-fusion, wish it wasn’t so crashtastic, though…
very stable here
wilymage alsamixer have “optionnal” ncurses !!! *optionnal* if possible.
doublehp_, i have read the manual, but it lists only sseversions and 387. that seems daft, so i asked
nope, alsamixer is ncurses-only, I’m sure
viva le francais
sorry, you are right; even the script I pasted says u’r right zarro bug found in BTS on my problem
Is there any easy way of seeing where a blocked package requirement comes from?
thanks a lot. works great
zarro in forum; either lynx is broken, or I forgot how to use it … but, I really cant find any solution to my X problem. Used to work until upgrade wilymage was right; even what I pasted says he is
Do I need to re-install my printer’s drivers if I’ve installed a new kernel?
Joker_-_: doubtful
why wouldnt my printer work anymore then?
Joker_-_: are(nt drivers in the kernel ?*
wut?
Anybody? I’ve been away from this install for some time, and an emerge -NuDav world gives a bunch of blocked packages that I cna’t figure out.
nah it’s an ml-1610 so it uses the samsung’s drivers do you think I’d have to re-install the drivers6
Joker_-_: I believe you do. I know I need to, using nvidia’s closed-source drivers.
output
yeah… makes half-sence lol
You’ll need to emerge -C x, where x are the blocking packages
worth a shot I’ll be back for updates
Yes
pretty accurate, thx. I’ll be back
what’s the X framebuffer driver called?
I just emerged vmware-player and get the following error when trying to start it. Any suggestions? http://rafb.net/p/ZtZDjo19.html
Joker_-_: to my first question, then, you anwer should have been “no”
??
try an env-update and ldconfig first
there are 3 ones
what’s the difference doublehp? *doublehp_
I see only two overlays in layman, is this normal?
xdirectfb, fbdev, aalib, libcaca , console-vga …
which one would you recommend, fbdev?
aalib
aalib is cool
ok
or libcaca
the way to access FB, and features supported in. One of them “only” support 3D accel
same error
but I think aalib renders better
if someone tries a brute-force attempt to break ssh passwords, can i see that they tried anywhere in a log? does ssh block that ip by default (no iptables)? do i need to ask ssh to log such information?
Hi folkes
thanks
the vga ways use FB emulation, so, work even on cards not supporting FB
ok
if emerge gets everything from source and compiles on the computer - wouldn’t it work perfectly with out distros? such as slackware?
depends on your card, and what you want
[1] depends on how you’ve configured syslog-ng or such; [2] not unless you have a script to do so [3] see 1
my card is whatever parallels emulates thus I’d imagine a framebuffer driver would be my best bet
in practice, the nicest ones are directfb and fbdev, cause the rendering is pixel oriented; vga and aa* are character oriented
ok
directfb uses FB acceleration; fbdev relies on the FB capabilities of the kernel
ok sounds good, I’ll give those a try
Anyone?
hi how do i install a graphics driver that’s not included on the live disk?
things like directfb do not use Xorg/Xfree at all; so, depending on what you want, the way to proceed may not be what you are used to. Xdirectfb embeddeds it’s own graphic engine.
skacjware us a great distro, i used it for years & years
I just emerged vmware-player and get the following error when trying to start it. Any suggestions? http://rafb.net/p/ZtZDjo19.html
even emerge -uD setarch fails.
anyone?
. desktop tuto on the Gentoo site should help
Hm. Thanks anyway, wilymage. I’ll have to deal with this later.
did you read the compleet install tutos ?
i read most of it
if you need it in the live CD, it’s likely not possible. If it’s installed system, you just need to add a FLAG to make.conf
I am getting a huge number of segmentation faults all over the place on my new system.
dead RAM stick ?
hello world
start by checking the ram, boot the install/live cd, at the boot: prompt type memtest and let it run at least 6 hours (preferrably mor)
I ran a full memtest86+ and it found no problems.
hallo Klaus
how long did you run it?
broken CPU cache, or heat sink fallen away. Also think of under clocking CPU.
A full test took 1.5 hours. I ran CPU-BURN-in also.
I am having issues with vmware player. I have a multilib system and when trying to start vmplayer I get: /opt/vmware/player/lib/bin/libcrypto.so.0.9.7: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32
mem test never found any problem on my machines, still, removing some stick often fixed faults for me
I also ran Seagate Disk diagnostic.
I’ve added the haskell overlay with layman and I have the source line in my make.conf, but I’m still not able to install packages from that overlay
../lib32/ld-linux.so.2
Could it be something else?
and eix returns nothing on searches for it
let it run for at least 6 hours, ram problems often do not show up in 1.5 hours
Could I have some misconfiguration that would make all these segmentation faults?
memtest and similar app are doing idealised tests; Kernel loads driver to use advanced functions of memory, like bursts, ECC, PCI burst, MMU, TLBs …
Ok, let’s suppose that is true. Then why am I easily able to get segmentation faults consistently when trying to do anything under Gentoo, but can’t get a signle memory error in 1.5 hours? Oh.
Renfield, memory errors manifest themselves in strange and wonderful ways.
remove stick one by one; no; use box with only one stick at a time: imagine, if you have 4 sticks, and 2 are broken …
in short, give memtest a lot more time
I suspect it is not a hardware issue. I think it might be something like the binaries are linking to the wrong libraries.
what are you doing when you get the segfaults? this could be a heat/overclocking problem
Is that possible?
proper cooling (and over clocking) and dead RAM have been the source of my fault problems. Rarely, I saw broken GCC, badly compiled kernel …
segmentation errors often are hardware issues
I guess you guys are anti-everything-that-is-not-gentoo
why would you say that?
to compile Linux, and libc, use the exact GCC ver recommended
read above :’(
Yes I know that segmentation faults are often hardware issues. I have had bad hardware from such, which is why I ran the full suite of tests. I’m not overclocking, Using adequate cooling.
can’t cleared my screen. but if someone is being crude or bashing you for non-gentoo stuff (asking people to take OT / non-gentoo stuff is commen here, politely), let me know
Hi… I would need some help trying to install Gnome 2.20, installation stops at gtkmm, this is the emerge error http://pastebin.ca/708606 . If anyone can take a look I would be happy.
is anyone here running vmware on an amd64 system?
no offense but multiple people have basically said you need to run memtest longer. so start there.
hay all emerge rtl818x-svn
Fieldy, no, it’s gentoo related, I was wondering if it is safe to install emerge on slackware, since it compiles everything from source and all.
and the father.lugmen.org.ar is down. why is that is there any other place I could download this
ah. not something i know about, and something which would be difficult to find any support for, sorry
Oh
Ok…
even on dead HW, tests never found any problem. In one case, I had boken CPU cache; no test could find it; I just matched it by readin CAREFULLY /proc/cpuinfo. x86 do very fast tests; this kind of bug can not happen on arch like Alpha, where every single transistor is tested at boot time. Those random bugs are the reverse of the coin of “quick design” arch like x86
so you’ve never heard of anyone that’s installed emerge on something other than gentoo?
see #gentoo-alt Prefixed Portage. I’ve run it on OSX.
I prooved that some 512M SDRAM was dead; memtest for 18h did not find any problem.
digital0001, what’s your GTK+ version?
This is just an old P3 733 mhz.
the most fun are when it’s a power supply outputting dirty (not-well-filtered) power, or if it’s overloaded don’t cheap out on psus.
never had that yet, neither me nor any friend (yet)
I don’t see xgl in ~amd64. Is it still that unstable?
I’m running memtest86+… I’ll be back tomorrow.
heh be happy. most irritating thing to track down, often cannot be detected without an oscope good luck!
bheekling, 2.12, any idea?
if “esearch -S” cant find your package, do “cd /usr/portage && find |grep foobar”,
can someone help me troubleshoot my sound? I just reboot and now it’s gone
eix is nice as well, but one of those should find what you’re looking for
|alexwait|, did you do a kernel upgrade sometime recently?
but if “grep -nri foobar /usr/portage” cant find anything, then, it’s not in Gentoo, or, at least, not in the main branch; go http://people.gentoo.org, and search for some layman
bheekling, the emerge run ok, til it reaches what i pastebined, no warnings no nothing. I am trying to install gnome 2.20 through layman, something that seemed succesful for others..
all I added was some ACPI stuff
if you fix my X, I’ll try
digital0001, yeah, I’m using gnome-experimental as well
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-444743-highlight-sndhdaintel.html
|alexwait|, yes, but did you recompile your kernel? if so, run module.-rebuild or some other tool to rebuild your drivers
brb I am going to try my non test kernel
digital0001, wait a second, that’s an older gtkmm digital0001, upgrade straight to 2.12.0 instead of 2.10.9
doublehp_:No, xgl is MASKED. I’m wondering why
has anyone had any problems with qt-3.3.8-r4 reinstalling with every upgrade ?
bheekling, is there a sane way to do that? package.unmask, or package.keywords? (sorry for stupid question)
#gentoo-xeffects probab bah
some packages are hard masked for good erasons; still, for some, I could get them working easily after unmasking (avidemux2). Usually, because too many people have problems. Maybe your arch wont reproduce those frequent bugs, if’r lucky ^^
he quit. bleh at hit and run questions
digital0001, do a sync, it should be there in portage, but masked, do a package.unmask and compile
ok I’m back what did I miss? lol I tried booting my “working” snd kernel and I still have no sound
we can see that alsamiwer: see if anything is muted
already checked. nope
‘m’ to unmute up arrow to increase desktop ? doucheck wires* double check
bheekling, thanks a million! I have to unmask some more packages it seems, I’ll be back if I get stuck again.
digital0001, sure, just ping me
some was actually. I unmuted them and still no sound I
anyone running with binutils-2.18? I need a binary.
can i store a password for a partition (not a keyfile) in cryptsettup
doublehp_, how can i convert a movie to HD format?
*crypttab
to play, you just need Main and Pcm; are you sure the player dont have any error ?
I am going to try to make a new kernel with no new stuff. make && make modules_install would affect my sound across all kernels right?
ck42, who isn’t
change aspect ratio ? crop pixels ? man mencoder / Google
well…I had to specify, right?
doublehp_, what’s the difference betwin mencoder and ffmpeg?
I only play on computer; I am ok with black borders; I perfer having black borders, rather than knowing I lost pixels
what are the downsides to hardend gentoo
hmm since a while I get sandbox violations when installing kernel modules using emerge
implementation, algorythm, nothing fundamental on your level. Mencoder tends to be more powerfull/complex/heavy
is this bad? http://rafb.net/p/5ok4DB75.html
doublehp_, ok
useing FEATURES=”-sandbox” I can install the package but this is not what I usually want to do
I’m guessing you’re running 2.18 then. Would you mind sending me a copy of your ‘ranlib’ file?
ck42, hehe, what’s your box’s CPU? Need to know that to see whose bin will work on your comp
with which tool I can cut out first two lines of stdin?
|alexwait|, id say yes
It’s an AMD
I use mencoder when I can; ffmpeg when I am really stuck; ffmpeg usually have less plugins and options
non 64
ck42, okay, will send you the file in a jiff
install ntp and ntpd, tweak files, and reboot
ntp?
doublehp_, aha, got it, i’ll try to convert from .3gp to avi format, should i use mencoder or ffmpeg?
how did they change?
Excellent! It’s located in /usr/i686-pc-linux/binutils-bin/2.18/
Does anyone have experience with vsftpd? What client do I use when ssl is enabled?
did you do as I said ? search me in google video
i’ve found just a movie

wait, I ll seek my tips
what does that mean? what does ntp do? I’m clueless here
doublehp_, ok
puts your clock always at the right time
is it safe to wait to do that after I fix my kernel?
please help, thanks
ck42, accept already!
here are lines to convert video and sound from/to my mobile phone
google does not provide any helpful info… please help
now my only issue left is…grub msgs are going to the serial port now, but it fails to print them to the vga screen also. tty1 I guess that would be.
ffmpeg -i in.avi -s sqcif -r 10 -ac 1 -ar 8000 -b 30 -ab 12 out.3gp
think my FW is catching that file

ck42, want me to mail it to you?
I’ll brb

that would work too

ipv6 != fun
but why is Xorg even mentioning that wilymage ?
hey, I’m having an issue building media-libs/fontconfig-2.4.2 post expat 2.0.1 install. I’ve run revdep-rebuild and everything checks out. I just tried the commands that mzbot recommended but still not building. Anyone have any ideas?
I cant hadle errors; see if mplayer can read it, the decoder used ( -v ), see if ffmpeg can read it, check if it handles input decoder; I cant say more
please help…
feeling alone in the dark ? so do I
can you help me doublehp_?
asking again may cause KB.
omg. what did I do 0.o
what why?
after remvoing acpi stuff and doing make && make modules_install I still have no sound
I’m just asking for help why would you kb me for asking for help?
from experience, removing fresh things NEVER restaure sound
what do you usually have to do?
I wouldnt; ops may. For “ennoying repetition”
well if someone would please help me I wouldn’t have to keep asking
ask once per 6h max; if no answer, shut up
6hours??? that’s crazy
0.o
I dislike the elitist attitude that exists in this gentoo community
when I am very patient, and asked every 2h, people saw it, and said me bad remarks … even every 2h they said I was ennoying
he’s not serious. repeating once every 5 minutes or so is ok
see http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm problem #3
6h is the limit when people forget questions, or users just go away
your cmment is completely unhelpful
please stop telling him that, as it’s not true
so what do you do?
sorry about them, they are not right.
I am; happened to me here last year to get bad remarks cause asking every 2h
ok. but that was a year ago relax.
too many elitist…
there’s only 2 people here giving you unhelpful comments, is there someone i’m missing?
you guys do realise that you were new to gentoo at one point too right?
hey
if no error reported by user app, dmesg, alsamixer, and cables connected and amplifier working (tested on alternate source), I give up.
true, just annoying that they’re being so agressive
who want to come into my gang ?
I suppose I’ll just /ignore them
i’m an op so i’ll make sure they don’t do it again, i appologize
want?
hexstar, the rest of us are cuddly teddybears! 3 *hugz* hexstar, what was your problem again?
when I run Xorg -configure I get these errors: _XSERVTransSocketOpenCOTSServer: Unable to open socket for inet6 transport open failed for inet6/hexstarstestgentooinstall:0 failed to open listener for inet6 what does it mean and how can I fix this? thanks!
thanks lol
I don’t understand why Xorg is calling inet6?
turn off the use flag if you don’t intend to use it
hexstar, do you have tcpipv6 compiled for you kernel, and have you tried the -ipv6 useflag if you dont want/need it?
yes I believe I have tcpipv6 compiled for the kernel

hey guys, I know the convention for the swap partition is usually 2x the amount of ram you have, does still apply when you have something like 8Gigs of ram, would I still need a 16gb swap partition?
can anybody find the ACPI page where it tells you what you need in your kernel?
hexstar, if not, i suggest removing it and setting the -use
depends on your applications and a lot of things

I just did a bunch of libexpat fixing and a revdep-rebuild that rebuilt most of kde-base. I’m trying to run krfb but I get error messages about “kio (KSycoca)” finding wrong versions of unspecifed things and “kcmshell (kdelibs)” unable to find a module called kcmkrfb. My question is, should I try to fix this before restarting kde? Or will restarting likely BE the fix?
not what I’m looking for
emerge -uDN doesn’t work, it doesn’t like those parameters
Anyone have errors building fontconfig? When i emerge it it fails with “(no error message)”.
