why not, show me the docs for that one
it really beats the purpose of gentoo, but if you really want to could probably just add -all- of them to /etc/make.conf
Ehnvis at the moment i just need all the softawre i want installed os my wife will stop nagging
try emerging libgssglue/libgssapi
not sure how to trigger bad behaviour
ok
same issue
ok. wrong info.
the use of a keyword is not connected with the matter of whether one does or doesn’t use a versioned atom. he could just as well exclude the keyword for a non-versioned atom also.
i cant emerge it.

you have to remeber that Gentoo is a -high-maintenance- system.
Anyone using small dm’s? like fluxbox?
doing emerge -uNDva world and for some reason kbd-1.12-r8 won’t compile.. anyone else having that same problem ?
nattdyr do u mean a “-all-” flag all literaly all of them
thanks for your help ..
sorry, but then i dont think gentoo is for you or atleast for that machine that your wife use.
eep - *fluxbox
literaly all of them.
i only have one pc
Music^Hound: you need to provide an error and a trace via pastebin if you plan on getting any assistance
Che-Anarc: using fluxbox over here.
fluxbox is cool
nattdyr would or could that cause any compile errors
kwhat ok thanx

is dga flag needed for Fluxbox and such if I got ATI X700 Card I am not sure?
don’t know, I have never heard about such a thing before. You can back it up and try
i can get get this fixed :/ icant*
pastebe in your keywords file
adding all use flags to make.conf would make your system a mess and clumsy.
well i did,
what does the above error mean?
it’s a linux filesystem. I don’t know which. it says “other linux 2.6.x kernel” environment in vmware
the entire thing cat /etc/portage/packages.keywords
i just need to learn how to perfictly set the USE=”" for my system
that means learning curve
oh lol … boot a livecd in the virtual machine, mount it and have a look at mount output
i keep getting compile errors for serveral packages

hi, I’ve bought an hp officejet j5708 do I have to emerge any specific package ?
I can’t boot vom livecd (you mean the one I started install, networkless) because I guess I burned grup on “hard disc”
Does anybody have conflicts between libgssglue and libgssapi this morning?
yep
/etc/portage/package.use
hm - anybody knows why kgpg-shred is _so_ fast compared to shred?
so press F8 or delete and chose the cdrom drive
i type that in.
wrong
okay.
ah ok
that would go to package.keywords
what is the correct way?
Hey all - I was wondering if anyone had any issues upgrading to xorg-server-1.4 and the new ATI Drivers 8.40? I realize that the new xorg server has a new dbi implementation, and I’ve tried to re-emerge the ati drivers, the x11 mouse and keyboard drivers, but xorg wouldn’t start…this is for Gentoo
if this is a desktop, then you use the desktop profile and the most important stuff will be enabled for you by default. If you miss things you feel is important, then you just add it
okay i also have in there as well.
kal-el: yes, there’s even a blocker, so I don’t know how you even managed that
libgssapi compiled fine on my system, x86 0.10
=app-cdr/nero-3.0.1.3 ~x86 eddie portage #
i had recompiled all x11*/*driver* and ati-drivers ports
ok, how does it fail when you try “emerge nero” ?
DrEeevil, apparently the block has been removed…all I did was emergy –sync and then did an update
the same way
is very possible the quality ati drivers are not 7.3 compatible. You using the latest masked drivers?
kal-el: no it hasn’t
first of all what profile are you using? ls -l /etc/make.profile if your not using the desktop profile i would recommend you to swap to that one as it has a good starter set of use flags.
read the error message again
What is US=”evo” //Adds support for evolution ?
DrEeevil, do you know how I can downgrade to xorg-server-1.3 using portage/emerge?
don’t give up! Gentoo is very fine it’s worth it
yes. Last version (INstalled 8.40.4)
default-linux/x86/2007.0/desktop
Hello.
kal-el: mask xorg-server-1.4
hmm you should be good then, if your not emerging some strange programs or have any other strange system settings.
i have just –sync… And something new: [blocks B ] x11-drivers/ati-drivers (is blocking x11-base/xorg-server-1.4-r1, x11-base/xorg-server-1.4
any other suggestions?
I have a problem when trying to emerge world. x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers (is blocking x11-base/xorg-server-1.4-r1) …
hi all. “/usr/libexec/cups/backend/canon failed” on cups. Any ideas ?
und3f, I guess I have the same problem but with the nvidia drivers
N-0-X:
this is going to get dangerous…. unmrege xorg-server …. you may need to unmask the latest version of that …. no guarantees i have not done this in a while.
N-0-X: don’t upgrade to 1.4 because nvidia drivers won’t work, so i hear…i don’t use em N-0-X: don’t upgrade to 1.4 because nvidia drivers won’t work, so i hear…i don’t use em
darksiide, oh, ok
UMMM? nano /etc/make.profile IS BLANK?
darksiide, when will that? Any idea? :p
N-0-X: when will it work?
its a folder not a file
N-0-X: when nvidia fixes it
darksiide, lol, ok.
oh
So I guess i’ll just block xorg-server until then
/etc/make.profile isnt a file it’s a directory
Thanks
everyones will be different, but here is what I use http://gentoo.easyshellz.com/gentoo/etc/make.conf and http://gentoo.easyshellz.com/gentoo/etc/portage/package.use only as an example
can i use new x11-xorg with xorg-server 1.3.0.0?
a mod should edit the topic with the new xorg server + binary drivers mess
i have no idea, but it “should” work as far as i have heard …
ok i’ll try
portage will bitch if it needs to upgrade pacakges
but day ago xorg-server dont blocks ati and nvidia drivers
FYI, to add a file to a package, all you have to do is to modify its CONTENTS file in /var/db/pkg
and i sucessfully update xorg and xserver
was there an upgrade to the drivers
no
yeah, never unmerge that package and never re-merge it
i would have to look closer, which i have to much of a headache to do at the moment
it seems to work, but don’t tempt portage
it seems that portage doesn’t want me to emerge world because I am blocking xorg-server-* and that it seems to be required by x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers even though I have the latest version installed ((dependency required by “x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-100.14.11″ [installed])
ok.
Hi everyone, I am in the process of starting an update (emerge -avuD world), and I have x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers blocking x11-base/xorg-server-1.4-r1, has there been a recent change in the way gentoo deals with nvidia and Xorg? What is the current way to install Nvidia drivers through portage? Thanks.
N-0-X: yeah, nvidia fails to update their drivers, mask xorg-server-1.4
N-0-X: seems to be having the same issue und3f…. i would suggest workign together.
you cannot use xorg 1.4 with nvidia drivers

so, if I install the new version of Xorg I won’t have 3d accelerated graphics anymore?
looks ok to me
KWhat_Work, yup’. Actually, I’m juts trying to update the rest of my system and then i’ll update xorg later when the drivers are fixed
if u did not xv at the end some got cut off?
exactly … thank nvidia for that
please someone
Is this temporary till Nvidia puts out a new driver? or am I stuck at Xorg version 1.3 forever with my nvidia card?
magesing, nvidia will release a new driver i would guess
(One should probably add to the topic that whole thing of drivers and the new xorg version, no?)
you have to wait for nvidia to adapt N-0-X: yes, we’re working on it
DrEeevil, okay
sorry i don’t have a /var/lib/X11
What is the proper way to tell my system not to update Xorg until further notice?
magesing /etc/portage/package.mask
use oneshot or package.mask
var/lib/xkb?
DrEeevil, about masking xorg-server, I’ve already done so and even added the no-rebuild flag (-n). Actually, I’ve masked: x11-base/xorg-server , x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers and x11-base/xorg-x11 but degraph still fails because of the masks actually :s
emerge xf86-video-sis http://rafb.net/p/XBVP6D61.html
N-0-X: yeah, masking it all might be overkill
fixed it!
ok, I’ll mask it
lotsa valium + alcohol + the pub ehrm, sorry wrong channel
sounds like alot of people run ~x86 in their accept_keywords in make.conf. as they have the xorg-server problem i mean.
Ehnvis, ~amd64 here but I get your point
it is much more up to date
ok
yeah i know that, but i do use that flag on some of the programs i use. but still not for the whole system as i’ve seen what it can do (did run that a year ago or so).
Bye everyone
I do it to find bugs
i dont have the time anymore to hunt bugs, but glad that someone does and i appreciate that.
I hate bugs, that’s why I hunt them
is xorg-x11-7.3 being worked on?
define “worked on”
are there people busy on the ebuild
hopefully someone can suggest a fix for me, i emerged a new system without the jpeg use flag, and now i can’t get eog to show jpegs, despite having rebuilt it with the jpeg use flag on
why won’t ati-drivers work with newest x-server?
I mean, to stabalize it
busy doing what it works
how many reasons is there for me to get a compile error on one of the packages when i tri to install gnome or kde?
it’s blocked
yeah, but it’s marked testing for most architectures…

I need to know, if there is a possibility to install and maintain gentoo with nearly no compiling, or to get e.g. debians apt working on gentoo. Background is the following: I have access to an old HP K-Class Computer. It is a really cool, tall machine, and I want to use secure linux web hosting on it. Now here comes the problem: I am not getting any debian HPPA Kernel booting, but the current gentoo hppa live
you fail it
gentoo and “no compiling” doesnt exist
yes it does GRP packages
hello, i have a v4l1 webcam and ekiga don’t detect it(it’s a gspcav1 camera) but with kopete it’s fine….what should i do?
Music^Hound: from where?
I told you to mount it to find out what filesystem …
depends on the package
lol
open office has a bin file also so you don’t need to compile all of it
Music^Hound: http://gentoo.osuosl.org/grp/ same on all mirrors
But there is e.g. the stage3 archive, with precompiled packages.
you can even do GRP from your install cd if you use the live dvd
Is it possible to cross-emerge between amd64 and HPPA? So I could use 2 thinkpads and compile mostly with those …
you can set up distcc with crosscompiling
The thing is , you will never get all of what you need or want from grp
even with such different archs like amd64 and HPPA? and does it really take the load from the old machine then?
Got this nasty problem with AltGr not working in X. Checked my xorg.conf and tried to change the binding by xmodmap - no results. Any ideas where I could start off to find the solution?
hi, i just added a new NIC and at first the hwaddr was normal looking, but now it’s all zeros. i know i can assign a new one, but why would this happen?
it should work for any arch. It’s also possible to completely compile on another machine and install the binaries it creates…
that sounds interesting, where can I find more information about that?
check your xorg.conf and add Option “XkbVariant” “nodeadkeys” under the inputdevice for your keyboard.
for example it is possible to run Gentoo on NSLU2’s http://gentoo-wiki.com/Gentoo_on_NSLU2 ask in #gentoo-hppa
I already did that. Same for XkbDisable.
you guys are my last hope
but we are not Obi-Wan
i guess you have “XkbModel” “pc105″ in there as well?
Hi all
thx for your help. i am going to report later these days
/boot is ext2 and / ext3
Anyone knows what’s the name of the game where you shoot balls down with another ball?
right, now go add that to your kernel
anyone here had problem on emerging ‘xorg-docs/xorg-1.4-r1′ ?
has the xorg 1.4 the nvidia drivers included, or why are the drivers blocking this update?
GParted has screwed up my windows partition and I can’t boot windows vista now. It tells me that it can’t find winload.exe but the file is there. GParted tends to do this but the only fix that I can find involves a vista install disk which I don’t have
Yep, did that.
It seems, we can’t merge xorg-docs successfullly
ok. Do I need this shm tmpfs? because tab completion always gives /dev/shm
you’ve just become windows-free
heh, someone add the binary driver issue to mzbot
leave that alone
on a running system, can I uncomment that
can you explain that?
DrEeevil Sounds good except that all my notes are on OneNote on that partition and are not backed up. I have a speech in 3 days and a test on definitions in 2, both of which are in those onenote notes
No, it’s because xorg-server-1.4* doesn work with nvidia-drivers.
nvidia needs to adapt their drivers to the new xorg, will take time
you’re screwed
lol thanks for the kind words
hmm and you have defined a correct “XkbLayout” and you have loaded the correct and working keymap at boot?
so i wont be able to use beryl, until this is done?
get the data out, find a way to reinfect your machine with wheeee-sta and pray
I have ext2 and ext3 enabled
support for the controller?
or until you downgrade.
how can I find out the controller
does this release of xorg support mice with different names than “event0″
lspci
Thank God for bittorrent, I will have a vista install disk eventualy but I could use my speech notes NOW
err … uhm … yes?
lesson to learn, use free software
as i need to rename my mouse with udev so that it will always get the same name
I need some help with grub’s menu I have two HDs with two OSs
on a roll
right now I’m unplugging and plugging them to switch boots..
DrEeevil can’t find anything that does it all for school . I’m all about linux for everything except games and school
yeah, I’m evil
that’s retarded, so.. help? pretty please?
uhm … I fail to understand your needs
erm? the mouse should always be able to be seen under /dev/input/mice.. or am i wrong? that has always worked here on alot of different machines.
Layout is set to de_CH which should work just fine - at least if I’m not a complete dork. Not quite sure about the keymap though.
root (hd0,0) and hd(1,0) .. if the os is on the first partition
DrEeevil office 2k3+ (not openoffice) for school and course games
teach grub to boot the other OS
what does office do that you really need?
ms office is awesome
that’s what I thought. Now, I have 3 HDDs, actually. The third one is a SATA (the other two are IDE) and is always on OOffice is not worse
there is an example grub.conf in /boot/ somewhere
I dual boot with XP for gaming too, though
learn tex …
thats not the problem… i have a diNovo desktop and all my three input devices have the same name, and always get different ids for evdev… makes it difficult to use the 12 buttons…
DrEeevil it doesn’t do anything special other than be Office which is a requirement for 2 classes
check /etc/conf.d/keymaps
ah, your classes fail at life
ah got ya.
i use office all day, imo, ms office is way better than anything else
the thing is that I don’t know which harddrive does grub understand for hd(1,x), if my second IDE or the SATA one
nice little touches
ugh!
hmmm
you’re not the one having to integrate text from 4 different office versions I guess
do you knwo which drive grub is on?
and previous versions of evdev and xorg weren’t able to use the renamed device node for evdev
yeah, ms aren’t one for compatibility
not really, depends on what you use from it, I guess. It’s a little less complicated in changes followup and whatnot I dont remember the english word
we have OOffice to open old MS docs
name whatever
I think that means that that drive is 0, and the other must then be 1
hellooo
hd(0,0)
controller enabled too
i like office 2003 i think the new one is a little.. what’s the word.
but there’s TWO others, see change control?
incompatible?
the european union has decided to make opendocument as the standard for document exchange… until ms can use od, they will loose customers…
i dunno. it plays all our older access games and stuff
trial and error?
all i’ve used from 2007 is access though
how do you link a program say /home/x so that when I type “x” in console, it runs that program?
hello
“path”
ls -lA
doesn’t grub have a different syntax for SCSI discs, really? damn. Oh, wait.. I think I can set up the HDD numbers on BIOS yeay
liek PATH=”$PATH;/home/me”
I don’t need to have all HHDs with OSs as masters, do I? just the one with the bootloader
or something
no, all grub knows is hd for harddisk. It cares not about IDE/SATA/SCSI/next-years-fad
hey. just checking. how many time does it take to compile the kernel in a P4, 1.7GHz?
not sure about your quotes, but that’s the idea
brb phone
depends on how many modules you have in it?
not for me
or just type ~/x
anyway, up and down? about not exactly?
hmm
I already have a program running linking it as just x in the console
I had an AthXP with 1G RAM and it took me… about 5min, maybe? maybe 10 more than 5 less than 15, I’d say
a friend said about 30′ ?
maybe depends a lot on what else are you doing
ok thanks..
I dont think I ever took 30′, but maybe I’m doing my Athlon-PIV conversions wrong try
it will be done faster if you start it
i have but coulnd’t know how will it take and so i aborted. now i must do many things from beggining
any ideas on this failed emerge? http://pastebin.ca/690461 I was trying to emerge app-accessibility/dasher
you left the interesting bits out
nothing strikes me as being from the expat mess but it’s still possible
excuse me but what is the default login for sshd on the livecd?
none
(or in general for that matter) just root@ip? what pass?
there is none you have to set it

hi all can someone explain me in a nutshell why I should chose gentoo-sources rather then vanilla-sources ?
because gentoo-sources is supported with security patches and vanilla is not
Block Devices or Device Drivers? has it moved?
dawn`chorus: searching with ‘/’
the “base” portion of genpatches sometimes tracks stable queue fixes even before they make it into the next stable vanilla release. also, some other useful fixes are often included. finally, the “extras” portion has a handful of patches which some find useful (squashfs which is needed by the LiveCD, speakup for accessibility, vesafb-tng and a couple of others).
would a sync fix the problem?
dawn`chorus: use the / search in menuconfig
overall, it doesn’t deviate a great deal from vanilla though.
hkBst, troxor, thx. didn’t realize that was there. under General Setup.
hkBst, what kind of security fixes? And if those fixes are absolutely superB why aren’t they part of vanilla?
if the maintainer is aware of the problem and fixed it, yes.
vanilla is exactly what it says, vanilla. you get what you’re given but the Gentoo kernel team will dedicate resources to managing their own patchset (note that the “base” portion of genpatches is shared between multiple *-sources ebuilds). besdies, not everyone wants to run the latest vanilla (they’re not always as stable as upstream would have you believe).
how do I got about using that patch?
kerframil, owkey, now what kinds of things are different?
they become part of vanilla eventually.
having a bespoke kernel patchset allows for greater control of the release cycle and provides many other benefits, a couple of which I’ve mentioned. you don’t need me to tell you: dev.gentoo.org/~dsd/genpatches I’d suggest following the “trunk” link
Yoda, like I speak
or the release information link, for that matter
I were searching for it already, but it isn’t quite clear
was trying to get an emerge -e world to fix the /etc mishap, but now the binutils binaries in /usr/arch/bin is pointing at the wrong version of binutils
it is the same as with other packages. Gentoo patches them so they work together or to correct issues that we can’t wait until the next upstream release for. Vanilla is garanteed to be unpatched.
is there a safe way to fix that, or shoudl i just move the simlinks
with all the problems that goes with that.
use binutils-config if you can the relevant config files are under /etc/env.d/binutils (i.e. in a similar manner to gcc)
hkBst, I’m having a bit trouble with my audio output and disk I/O wait, (excessive disk use halts my system, ene tough I have two CPU’s)
thanks

I think vanilla-sources is there exactly so you can be sure to exclude the Gentoo patchset as the culprit
hi what cflags for a core 2 duo?
OVERLaY*
nocaca
32 bit
What?
cflags
if what I used was the handbook says
faq cflags
CFLAGS are flags you want to pass to your compiler when it is building C programs. These flags can contain optimizations that you wish to use. Please use sane settings as overoptimizations have an average effect. See /etc/make.conf.examples for examples and sane defaults. See also http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc-3.3/gcc/Invoking-GCC.html

Hi, I am trying to emerge truecrypt but it fails with the following error. http://rafb.net/p/ExtIgM63.html . I have tried to compile other kernel modules in portage without fail…so I don’t know what can cause this. Anyone can help me?

you need to put it in /usr/local/portage/CATEGORY/sshdfilter/sshdfilter-1.5.5.ebuild
gn00b, then i’m out of ideas, have a look at bugs.gentoo.org and open a new bug if your problem isn’t already covered
you should be able to get them back after
marenz, ok. thanx
ok. What category should it go in? Something like net-firewall?
ok, thanks for the help mate
it doesn’t really matter
Ok. It is now in /usr/local/portage/net-firewall/sshdfilter I get same error.
Any idea, anyone?
make a nice paste with all relevant info please
have you digested the ebuild?
how do I do that?
it should complain if that were it

i thought that was the problem as it complains about no ebuilds to satisfy sshdfilter?

can any1 tell me why i stopped received the gentoo newsletters all of a sudden, although i did not register?
I actually don’t want to go into 64-bit mode to avoid A) recompilation of all system and B) 32-bit incompatibility.
remove the category there paste the emerge output
Roger that. http://rafb.net/p/ExtIgM63.html
i got the last one on the 7th of may
no idea, use bugzilla
hi! has anyone any idea on how to remove blockers?
…d*mn. Now that sucks hard.
yea, happened to me too. although i am still “subscribed” to the list what package?
does anyone know a good and easy ftp server client to set up/configure?
darksiide, yea im also still subscribed
a lot of kde programs
darksiide, so what can we do?
it isn’t just one
expat stuff
not sure, i haven’t looked into it. i’m going to try unsubscribing and resubscribing again sometime
hello
eh, what is blocking what?
I just did ‘emerge -uDa world’ successfully after having done ‘emerge -e kdelibs’, also successfully now I am doing ‘revdep-rebuild -X –library libexpat.so.0′ am I wasting my time? (KDE won’t start :P)
i try to mix stable with testing and i’ll paste my emerge -uDNpv $PKGS output to pastebin in a moment…
i came here with a problem to solve i cant find stacks size option in kernel hacking section, and i need it for ndiswrapper module for my wlan
do you use menuconfig or what?
menuconfig
to search use the “/” key
http://rafb.net/p/Rd47g543.html
hi all i have a small question. i compiled gnome without a flag in his dependancies. now emerge -pv gnome shows me only gnome. how can i see the full tree? thank you very much!
can Miro be installed in gentoo with an e-build???? http://www.getmiro.com/download/
remove the category there, thus PORTDIR_OVERLAY=”/usr/local/portage/”
did you change your USE flags or ..?
http://rafb.net/p/48f1Li48.html
the first time i did only “emerge gnome” but now i can’t use jpeg files for things such wallpapers, themes, and so on
yes, go into that dir and do “ebuild sshdfilter-1.5.5.ebuild digest” then emerge as normal
i would like to know which package must i recompile with that flag
Hm, if I go into the work directory and compile manually it compiles fine. Anything that can be done about that?
I get an i/o error when executing grub
i would make sure you have the jpeg USE flag in your USE flags, it is needed for many apps
i used / to search for stacks but nothing about 8KB or 12KB stacks selecting…
dev fd0, sector 0
!meta truecrypt
Package: app-crypt/truecrypt Herd: crypto Maintainer: crypto@gentoo.org
emerge –info to see your USE flags that are currently set
ll go and ask on amd64
umm, its probably a hidden option, which will appear after you enable the correct option
send mail to the crypto herd or file a bug
I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
urhm…er…sure, sure.
yes i know that is a flag problem, but “jpeg” is not a flag of gnome, but is a flag of some package like gnome-blah
http://rafb.net/p/LCaOlR72.html
i’m not sure that the correct kernel option is called for that, you could take a peek in the .config file if you know what you are looking for
the problem is to find the name of the package that needs the jpeg flag!
do you know a www that shows influence of kernel options on other options ?
heh, nope
thanx mate
hi, is there a manual way to add a printer, not through the cups web page? thanks
right, i’m trying to find out if you just added the jpeg flag or not, there is a newuse option for emerge
can i install gentoo onto a flash drive
/etc/portage/package.keywords_
if you didn’t JUST add it then the mystery package already has jpeg support and you have a diff problem
I just installed gentoo on a intel P35 chipset (Abit IP35-E mother board). When I shutdown the system, it does all the stuff but can’t power off the system (system Fan runs). What is missing?
thank you!
dragonlar, yes, you can. There is wiki for it, i guess
emerge -avuDN gnome, check the man page for portage to see what those options mean
here is a list with blockers: i added –tree to the list of emerge’s options: http://pastebin.com/m18f676f0
thanx
how do I apply the patch for dasher? http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=189307
malahal__, Something in APM/AIPC
I tried doing a locate on the .cpp file but nothign showed up
gentoo is fantastic, but sometimes flags make me fool
NeddySeagoon, you mean ACPI? not AIPC???
I’ve never done anything like this before
sata missing in kernel
not sure man, looks like you are trying to mix the monolithic kde and the modular one
i’m trying to emerge kde packages but it pulls kdebase for some reason
lnxnt_, my sata was missing in 2.6.22-r5 but everything worked in -r6. What sata controller you have?
the bug report says there’s a patch but its’ very vague on what to do to fix it
eh, i can’t tell what the problem is sorry
I dont know it’s just vmware and I don’t know what it does with the disk. but in gentoo I have /dev/sda1 2 and 3
thank you anyway
how can I execute a command based on the output of the previous command for example say I do an ls -al and then want to move all of the results to a folder called temp
micand, use pipe ‘|’
theres an error in net-ftp/proftpd-1.3.1_rc3. mod_sql_mysql.c:598: Error: Missing “
is there an algorythm that can be used to trace the package that trigger this version conflict? (3.5.7 vs. 3.5.7-r3)
Hello, I am attempting to merge net-fs/ntfs-utils and I receive an error “No package
michael_, you can’t do that simply because programs depend on precise input!
malahal__, yeah one of the power management options is missing from your kernel
Hello, I am attempting to merge net-fs/ntfs-utils and I receive an error “No package ‘libgssapi’ found” ..so I do an emerge -p libgssapi only to find it blocks another package that I need libgssglue.. any suggestions?
theres an error in net-ftp/proftpd-1.3.1_rc3. mod_sql_mysql.c:598: Error: Missing “
NeddySeagoon, good point. I think I copied the config from sysrescuecd and used genkernel.
Has anyone else encountered problems emerging the latest ebuild for xorg-docs?
malahal__ that usually fails for much newer kernels as make oldconfig drops things
try -mysql USE flag
NeddySeagoon, ok
drops MANY things…., everytime i change the kernel, i have to enable rais by hand, as it gets disabled everytime
moepman raid is not in the genkernel config
olek, funny man, i have mysql installed… and need the mysql flag for php-mysql
moepman make you own kernels - they will be much leaner than genkernel
michael_, you can try ‘mv * /temp’. It moves everything in the current dir to /temp/ folder
but why is it always disabled, even if i use oldconfig? i use genkernel with menuconfig and told genkernel not to touch anything until i say it
How to update files in /etc again?
Che-Anarc, dispatch-conf
thx
as it is the simpliest way to compile kernel, modules, build my splashscreen and install everything, including the grub config with one command
interesting. When I start X, my computer crashes after the upgrade to xorg 1.4 and it’s not my WM
moepman I’ve never used genkernel … so it must be something it does. raid propgates from one kernel to the next with make oldconfig for me
mod_sql_mysql.c:598: Error: Missing ” — thats the message
i use make oldconfig before i use genkernel for a new kernel source, ans everytime raid is off.. its annoying…
df:cannot read table of mounted file systems: No such file or dir
/proc bindmount it
how should it… chroot has just a root fs, no mounting…
moepman, … learn to not use genkernel at all
what is bindmount you mean mount -t proc proc /mnt/gentoo/proc before chrooting i did that
what can i do default entry in menu.lst to /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-gentoo-r6
Hi.
thats not my prob atm… i just wanted to make an update to proftpd, and i get mod_sql_mysql.c:598: Fehler: fehlendes abschließendes Zeichen ” (error, missing tailing “) and you need to copy your /etc/mtab to the chroot
Hello, I am attempting to merge net-fs/ntfs-utils and I receive an error “No package ‘libgssapi’ found” ..so I do an emerge -p libgssapi only to find it blocks another package that I need libgssglue.. any suggestions?
moepman, sorry I don’t use proftpd
sorry.. net-fs/nfs-utils
there is an error in the code… i just wanted to tell it somebody, so that it may be corrected…
ok but basically I don’t need df. I execute grub-install /dev/sda and get the df error
irc is not the place to “file” bug reports
moepman, file a bug at bugs.gentoo.org, or it will be forgotten
mean, gentoo handbook doesn’t say to copy that over
I just upgraded to xorg-server-1.4-r1 and now my keyboard doesn’t work anymore when I startx as user, only Ctrl-Alt-{F1,..,F12,DEL} work. If I startx as root, nomal keyboard input is accepted. Does anyone know what the culprit could be?
mean the quick install guide
Quick question! I need to make an ebuild for an app I want to install in /usr/local. Do you know any guidelines and well, tutorials for writing a simple ebuild?
See the topic of #gentoo-dev-help
Thank you.
here is a good start: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Write_Ebuilds
does anyone know a simple filemanager for x ?
Ah, thank you very much! I’ll go read it right away. You can try the standard KDE/GNOME/XFCE ones, or maybe worker, krusader…
Have you re-emerge x11-drivers/xf86-input-keyboard ?
hmm thank you … ill check the simple ones out
Yes, I recompiled everything in x11-drivers.
Um, any clues in Xorg log?
No, no errors, no warnings…
xorg.conf setup properly ?
The same I used for xorg 6.8 till now.
I can’t see how that would depend on user account?
indeed @Cap
cpy /etc/mtab to?
I’ve just managed to get synaptics touchpad working.
/mnt/gentoo/etc/mtab guess how do i know if i’m in a chrooted env or not
Took all day, and following bug reports closely.
lnxnt_ do ls /mnt is gentoo there ? if so you are outside the chroot
therefore there is the command to “sign” your shell with “chroot” in the handbook…
You did check the log after user login and not root?
ahok
Yes. It looks like a problem with permissions, but unfortunately I don’t know where I should look…
NeddySeagoon keep getting an error for kbd-1.12-r8… make[1]: *** [kbd.pot] Error 127 !!!! emake failed .. what could be a fix ?
Possibly the x11 driver file permissions, but I would expect something in the log. Check /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/kbd_drv.so is readable by everybody.
Did that. Readable and executable by everyone, like the mouse driver (which works).
no it does not work I need a gentoo virtual machine with umbrella (kde program) x86 ~ 3Gig not bigger any links? then i emerge lilo maybe lilo works is it possible that grub should be configured before chrooting
Music^Hound, Thats a new onw to me
can any1 help with vmware?
lnxnt_, you can configure grub any time after grub is emerged … so you would normally be in the chroot
x11-base/xorg-server-1.4-r1 is in portage is it safe to use? or same probs as 1.4?
anyone had success with this howto? http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Iptables_for_newbies
At least I have problems with the keyboard, so probably it’s wise to wait some days.
it seems to me like its leaving many kernel setting
ok
hello can you help me with the following error please ? http://rafb.net/p/GCYgTr99.html
hi all
lol
hello can you help me with the following error please ? http://rafb.net/p/GCYgTr99.html
nice one
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,3) I did not say (8,3) in lilo
_Angelus_, http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=191709?
_Angelus_, without the last “?”
yeah figured that out marenz told meh bug not valid lol
is it possible to buy stuff from the gentoo shop using paypal or direct bank transfer? i do not have a credit card but would like to buy some T-shirts
hi guys, I’m just wondering about some programming stuff. Not really gentoo, but I don’t know where else to look I’m trying to find a tasm compiler for linux. Does something like that exist?
hi everybody, how can i make the ndiswrapper module load at the startup?
hey hey wo quick quesions 1 how do i change the default keyboard from USA to UK wo - two =P
locales and/or xorg?
you can add it to the modules.autoload thing you used when you setup the system unless… did you use genkernel?
John, take a look at /etc/conf.d/keympas, too
talcite, i emerge the sources, compile and use that kernel…
keymaps
alright, then you also configured modules I suppose? there’s a file under modules.autoload.d or something in the /etc directory
hi
i’m not on my gentoo system so I can’t find it for you
is it true, if you swear here you are banned?
talcite, ok i’ll check it, thanks…
worth a try
wanna try?
/etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.X X being a 2.4 or 2.6 kenrel
fuck yes I mean yes
erm…. everything
can understand the solution of that bug marenz any help please?
do i have to do it for xorg and everything else sepuratly?
is it possible to buy stuff from the gentoo shop using paypal or direct bank transfer? i do not have a credit card
ok that kind of confirms
dave32, thanks i found it
have you tried?
_Angelus_, as i understand you only need renderproto and libXrender in the version 0.9.2 to compile xorg-server
likewhoa, it only has credit card as payment method on the website
that totally blows. file a bug, lol
okay, changed it for /etc/conf.d/keympas
but what should i do to stop the error marenz?
*keymaps anything else?
np
_Angelus_, you have both packages installed at version 0.9.2 ?
what?
take a look at your xorg.conf file
likewhoa, hehe yea i should
oops tab complettion
they should just use their own merchant gateway and not cafepress.
oh he left
no marenz one is .3 and the other .4 :/
likewhoa, i think so too
seems they only accept “Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover and CafeCash” paypal should be on that list.
likewhoa, and i had such a good opinion of these gentoo guys
I was trying to build hal just now, and it said I must build “sys-apps/pciutils without the zlib USE flag” ???
#gentoo-userrel and complaint
yes, do what it says
_Angelus_, please do an emerge –sync again, i’m in the process of updating an my xorg-server pulls in the correct version as it seems *hoping it compiles* so your system might be out of sync, the emerge -uDNpv world again
k
Nothing i can really see i xorg.conf
_Angelus_, emerge –sync, emerge -uDNpv world should give you the correct versions and make xorg-server compile
the problem is at the moment im doing an emerge -eav world that has been going for 2days
is there a “XkbLayout” in your xorg.conf file?
nope ho hum
add it
i changed the other thing, tha’ll probibly do oh, hehe, okay ^_^
_Angelus_, then just mask the libXrender-0.9.4 version so that it won’t get emerged but the previous version gets emerged
Option “XkbLayout” “us”
Which section?
_Angelus_, after masking just do a emerge –resume
Section “InputDevice” Keyboard
lol i have Accept_keywords=”~x86″ marenz -_-
a “us” mouse would be weird
Awesome, done hhahaha, yeah =P
works?
_Angelus_, hrr hrr bad idea
i guess i’d have to reboot
no restart X
oh. oh yeah brb
ctrl+alt+backspace
dough i did an emerge –sync and re-emerged xorg-xserver im hoping it wont crash
_Angelus_, so now you lost the change to do emerge –resume? and you’ve been compiling for two days?
I’m still getting that emerge-killing “Alarm clock” message I mentioned a few days ago. Anyone have any idea how to get rid of it?
nope, emerge –resume still continued after an emerge –sync
_Angelus_, oh ok i thought you emerged x-org afterwards?
no lol
sweet keyboard is correct now second quick question… how do i change the font / add a font
_Angelus_, but libXrender is still ~0.9.4 so nothing has changed when you accept ~x86 ? or am i wrong?
how can i get gpm to auto madicly start on boot
rc-update add gp boot DavidProck1981
for past 2 days i was not able to boot my system. on debugging i found that it hangs while running ’setupcon’
rc-update add gpm boot DavidProck1981
what i did was , emerge –sync and then rm -r /usr/portage/distfiles/xorg-server-1.3.0.0.tar.bz2 and emerge –resume
*change the font of the terminal
hay is there any thing else like that , that i need to do
_Angelus_, if i understand the bug correctly that won’t help you if you accept ~x86
best google for this, and look for .Xdefaults or something similar
cool cool cheers mate
Poitiers is too far from Lille i guess for bying me a beer
*phew* i just remembered that the gentoo cd stops the fans in my laptop, i noticed the smell of warm components :] (some issue with ACPI…)
if you are going to mess with fonts you will love xfontsel
Hi. Can anyone quickly tell how I can determine all installed versions of a package with portage (all installed slots, like gentoo-sources). I’ve used this before with emerge… but can’t find the param
hi, i was testing something and emerged python 2.3, now i can’t install 2.4 without first completely removing 2.3. will that break my system?
-pv or -av or use equery
anyone know the package for printer drivers/support?
equery list
ok thx
cups?
what printer you are trying to install?
epson Stylus C66
For past 2 days i was not able to boot my system. on debugging i found that it hangs while running ’setupcon’
need gutenprint aind it aint in portage gimme a sec I’ll point you to a site
gutenprint works on other sysmte,s not this one lol
now i have booted with live cd, can anyone help me
kk I’ll just comile it
seems like the error didnt come out till now
compile*
ok , now it did
did you change anything that would affect booting? New kernel, etc?
hmm I’ve got a question, i’m attempting to install compiz-fusion from the xeffects overlay, i’ve installed the overlay i’ve configured make.conf, yet when i try to run emerge compiz-fusion i get the “no package/ebuild found” error. could someone suggest as to what I could’ve done wrong?
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_EPSON_CX3650_%26_DX3850 you’ll find it there
no. but there was a kernel upgrade last week but i remember booting after that
epson printers work great
did you install the new udev update?
_Angelus_, i think you need to mask the packages by hand (/etc/portage/package.mask)
does udev have anything to do with setupcon. i was able to figure out that it hangs here
there is a command to emerge a version of the package
hello all, updated to xorg-1.4-r1 now X will not start please help
_Angelus_, but that won’t help when you update world next time
drbombay, I assume you updated xorg-server. What does /var/log/Xorg.0.log say?
maybe till that time the bug gets fixed
one sec
udev /can/ have somthing to do with that. http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=190994 — recent udev troubles that caused widespread weirdness
i figured it out by adding ‘log_action_begin/end_msg’ to /etc/init.d/keyboard-setup
Hello! Which chanbnel do I have to join to ask an mencoder related question?
Hello all. I’m trying to find which package to emerge to get the update-grub script/binary (whichever it is). esearch isn’t finding it, any ideas what package that is in? #mplayer
Thanks xD
Are you sshed into this box, or present physically ?
present physically
nm NeddySeagoon I found the fix I think in the forums ))) http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-541988-highlight-kbd+error+emake.html for ppl that may have the same problem
present physically
Music^Hound, thank you
np
I don’t have any keyboard-setup init.d file. Is this an old install? Do you know what provides that file?
least I can do
I am using ubuntu 7.04. not gentoo
Hello, I have a problem with emerge –sync on a ppc g3, it fails with the following output: http://rafb.net/p/XiAjOD56.html. I have removed /var/cache/edb/dep but it did not help. Any ideas?
ni1s, I get module version errors with mouse synaptics driver
I don’t think I can help you with Ubuntu. They have their own way of fucking things up. Here we fuck things up the Gentoo way.
all are ABI errors
drbombay, try reemerging it
language.
okay with all errors
Sry. ’s true, though, innit?
hi. does anyone know why cryptsetup now sets loop on /dev/ and not on /dev/mapper? that conflicts with fdisk also!
loki_val, lawl
we don’t mess things up! go to #ubuntu
loki_val, i still find the gentoo way of breaking things more logical then every other way
ok. thanks for your help. i already tried there but i could not get any help
boot__, install gentoo then we can hold your hand all you want
heh
That’s what I mean. We fuc^W muddle things up our own way, here.
i tried but i am scared.. may be too geeky
Yeah, it’s a bit intimidating. But if you have perseverance you will master the Zen of Gentoo.
hi. does anyone know why cryptsetup now sets loop on /dev/ and not on /dev/mapper? that conflicts with fdisk also! now they look “/dev/dm-1″ instead of “/dev/mapper/XXX”
yes but its better to know whats going on than hope Ubunto packagers know whats going on
prepare to waste a weeken — and just follow the handbook — you’ll be fine
Hi all, I just emerged mod_gnutls, added it to my apache configuration, ran etc-update and made relevant choices…but, now when I try and start apache, I get “(2)No such file or directory: GnuTLS failed to load params file at: /usr/lib/apache2/conf/dhfile” in the error_log. how/where I do I specify that file path?
luminoso, “/dev/mapper/XXX” still works
no need for an encrypted filesystem.. If someone wants to watch my porn more power to em…
hi “Contains a free cluster (2623693). Assuming EOF.” see: http://rafb.net/p/OX8qko48.html ???
/dev/mapper/system-home /home ext3 noatime 0 2 /dev/dm-5 560G 554G 5.7G 99% /home
do you use /etc/conf.d/cryptfs ?
luminoso, no
is your “fdisk -l” messes up because of /dev/dm-X? now they are listed on fdisk *messed **mess
luminoso, Disk /dev/dm-0 doesn’t contain a valid partition table that?
yes
I followed the instructions at http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Wacom_Tablet for setting up my wacom graphire 4 tablet, unfortunately after finishing those steps my tablet behaves like a mouse instead of a tablet… (in the gimp my pen only paints if I “tap” the tablet, no pressure sensativity). How can I enable pressure sensativity with my wacom tablet? Thanks.
yo
they were always there
but not here
Disk /dev/mapper/system-home doesn’t contain a valid partition table
only on this last restart last time i restarted was on 20th july
bup
anyone have gmailfs working? mine kinda works, i can copy files into the filesystem but can’t read them once they’re there.. would be nice to compare versions with someone who has it fully working
so there is something in the midle that mess up with dmcrypt
you could remove the udev rules for /dev/dm-X
humm nice idea
well comment them but yeah
they make no sense
sure they do
they mess up fdisk and dmcrypt original loop is on /dev/mapper/xxx why to use symlink /dev/dm-x?
check the change log
so do u agree that must be fdisk to be updated?
they just symbolic link all /dev/mapper stuff to their dm devices for dm-crypt,lvm2 stuff. it should just work for you as it did for me when the changes were made.
it does work
yooo
i kinda felt that something is wrong when fdisk gets confused
how is it getting confused?
http://rafb.net/p/QMp7MY56.html they are not suposed to be listed only after the update that they start to be listed in there
that’s not a problem. and they always been listed for me. atleast with ~arch
not for me. always been perfect with fdisk
whats the @ code in asci with those % thing?
*device-mapper-1.02.22 (26 Aug 2007) Version bumped. Added patch for option info –export, and updated udev-rules to use these. That should solve bug #189404.
https://bugs.gentoo.org/189404 maj, P2, AMD64, meteozwh@hotmail.com-udev-bugs@gentoo.org, NEW, pending, sys-fs/lvm2-2.02.10 can’t create snapshot because of the conflict with sys-fs/udev-114
also, on http://rafb.net/p/7HXVZH59.html this never had “dm-X” but always “/dev/mapper/XXX”
well, just ignore it as it won’t conflict with anything.
humm ok
that’s because of the udev rules. it’s better this way.
should i ajust my fstab from /dev/mapper/xxx to /dev/dm-x?
emergeing gnome messed up my vid card driver and wont ever complete emerging
no you can keep them as normal. the symbolic link will handle the rest.
ok thank you sir
can someone please tell me what is wrong with this command? — hal-get-property –uid ‘/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_471_329_01690000D6490742_video4linux’ –key ‘info.parent’ — the uid is definitely correct and the key is correct too, but I get a command syntax error for some reason oh wait, damn, never mind it’s –udi
hi , does anyone know how to fix this iS DRI driver expected DDX version 0-0.8.x but got version 0.7.1 3D driver returned no fbconfigs. InitDriver failed reverting to (slow) indirect rendering does anyone know how to fix this :http://rafb.net/p/VWu1m628.html
re-emerge the driver.
i will tray try

how do i solve this?
unemerge apache-tools
sorry that i am dumping my question so brute :$ and sorry for my bad english
hi guys, where can i find a kde “complete” list of USE flags?
qwedsa, emerge apache 2.2.6
yeah marenz but that broke my whole config
2.2 upgrade did ALOOT of config changes.. so be ready to fix them all.
http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/use-index.xml
idd its broken now
you might want to see the changes in 2.2 before upgrading.
how do i do that? i have already upgraded i want to downgrade now
apache.org?
ok
them mask it. =www-servers/apache-2.2
http://gentoo-portage.com/ here
you can also set the Desktop profile which sets common USE flags for desktop users.
when I noticed that my apache wasn’t updating it’s log file yet was still running, i tried to restart it and got this weird error http://pastebin.ca/690687
and use euse -i USEFLAG; to see info on USE flags. emerge php
Is there any precedent for an emerge process to throw SIGALRM and exit completely? I think that’s what the “Alarm clock” message means.
I *have* php
actually you might want to emerge curl first.
tried emering curl first already. same problem
did you re-emerge php?
is there any overlay that has libdrm-2.3.1?
check gentoo sunrise
do you think that’s what I should do? it’s a big step as php takes a few hours on this slower machine
likewhoa, I think sunrise does not have it
check b.g.o
man on other distro apache is’nt such a hell
run revdep-rebuild
ok
makes me grazy
2.0 to 2.2 introduced alot of changes so deal with it. it’s not Gentoo’s fault.
